Driver updates aren't automatically installed when detected by Windows Update.

Q: Driver updates aren't automatically installed when detected by Windows Update.

Hi there

I'm having multiple problems and the one above has come up today as I was looking into how to enable automatic TomTom connection and also Alfa wifi.  The Alfa keeps saying that Relatek driver is not connected.  Diagnostics keep coming up with different reasons and the one above is the latest.  It varies daily and I need some advice as it is soul destroying.  Is someone can help I would be most grateful.

Preferred Solution: Driver updates aren't automatically installed when detected by Windows Update.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Driver updates aren't automatically installed when detected by Windows Update.

FWIW:  You should never...use Windows Update for drivers.  If the system is an OEM/name brand system (e.g., HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.) you should get drivers for the system from the respective system manufacturer's websitel.

I have always had Vista set up to ONLY notify me about udates, not to install, or even download.

Well, when I flipped open ny notebook, I had to login.
Once logged in, I was notified that updates had been installed.
Sure 'nuf Vista had changed the setting. on its own, to automatically install.
I changed back to only notify me.

This is unaccepable!

The main question is Where the hell does Vista download drivers Now if you want the details keep reading but that's mostly what I want to know This is it Trust - USB Headset HS- now here's my problem When I put the headset in the usb port vista automatically downloaded and installed the drivers for it I found out later that any half-intelligent human being would configure vista to ASK before doing such a horrid thing unfortunately I'm a troglodyte and didn't do so from the beginning The problem with the driver vista found is that it recognizes my headset as a stereo system when in fact it has that nice surround chip inside The automatically, USB of Trust it... can't rid driver headset; get installed windows trust Trust USB headset; windows installed driver automatically, can't get rid of it... drivers would let me configure my mike and my headphones to my heart's desire too Alas I can't install the drivers unless I put the headset in the usb So I disabled the auto-download driver policy windows has prompting it to ASK me before it does so Trust USB headset; windows installed driver automatically, can't get rid of it... after I uninstall the driver from the device manager and try to install the TRUST drivers the moment in which I plug the headset in the usb vista starts installing it's ALREADY downloaded driver FASTER than the trust driver installer can install his so mid-install it tells me quot installation failed quot since the vista driver got installed quicker The way I see things with my limited common-sense the problem is this windows will ask me if I want to install a driver only if it's not found locally since the driver it found earlier and installed is somewhere on my hard it won't ask for nuthin' it just installs the prick I have to find it and delete it manually I tried to search for quot C Media quot Trust USB headset; windows installed driver automatically, can't get rid of it... that's the driver vista installs on my computer but I can't fin anything SO Where the hell does Vista download drivers

A:Trust USB headset; windows installed driver automatically, can't get rid of it...

Probably from the,

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository

folder. From having a quick look at the manual I think I can understand why Vista is installing C-Media drivers though,

Also not sure what drivers you are trying to install unless they are the XP ones, which in all likelihood won't work anyway. Something else I noticed on the download page for your headset,

Windows VistaFor this product, no special Trust driver is needed. This is because either the product does not need a driver in order to function properly, or the default driver from your operating system should be used. If available, check the manual of your product for further instructions.

Now with saying all that if you know which C-Media chip is in it,

USB Audio | C-Media Electronics

it is possible that you could get the drivers from C-Media. All C-Media products use C-Media reference drivers, only difference is that they are modified by the end manufacturer; custom applications, their own name showing in the control panel, etc. There is only one small problem with that at the moment though,

Due to the expiration of Sensaura license, the driver download site will be temporarily suspended. We will reopen the download site when the new driver is available.

Drivers | C-Media Electronics

which comes back to knowing which chip is in it, and then you may be able to find a suitable x64 driver elsewhere until such a time as C-Media puts them back up on their site.

Edit: Just had a look at the XP driver available from Trust and it looks like your headset uses the either the CM106 or CM108 chip in it (the INF lists both). As I said products using C-Media chips in them all use the same reference drivers, so using what I found in the INF I found this thread,

Gigaware Headset Skype-Compliant XP/Vista Drivers - Skype Community

I then downloaded and had a look at the x64 driver posted there and it lists one of the two DevID's found in the Trust driver,

%CMIUSB.DeviceDesc%=USB, USB\VID_0D8C&PID_0006&MI_00

you should be able to find the DevID of yours in Device Manager, and that driver should work for you. The pckage also contains the C-Media apps for controlling the headset but whether they are the generic C-Media ones or altered by Tritton (just added their name to them), that I can't tell you.

If your headset doesn't have the above DevID you amy still be able to install the drivers by manually adding the other DevID from the Trust drivers,

%CMIUSB.DeviceDesc%=USB, USB\VID_0D8C&PID_000C&MI_00

in the "[C-Media.NTamd64]" section (may also want to add it to the "[C-Media]" section as well, minus the X64 part), with a slight change so that it looks like this,

%CMIUSB.DeviceDesc%=USB106X64, USB\VID_0D8C&PID_000C&MI_00

if all goes well the driver should install as well as the apps. If it does install about the only thing that should happen is to get the red warning box about the drivers not being tested (WHQL, not the same as unsigned), reason being is that any changes to the INF breaks the WHQL certificate.

Hello Aleya, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's normal since you have installed the 32-bit (x86) edition of Office instead of the 64-bit edition.

Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office

I installed the Anniversary Windows 10 update from scratch on my Surface Book. After installing all the Surface Book drivers, I ran Windows Update and it downloaded and wanted to install more device drivers.

Most of those drivers failed to install and it won't let me re-install them.

You've made some large mistakes, I'm afraid.
Is your Recvoery parttion still intact? - Check your manual for the Recovery procedures, and back up your data to external media as a precaution.

Then attempt a System Restore to before you attemtped to repair the system.

Then post an MGADiag report - I have a suspicion I know what the problem is, and that should onfirm it (or tell me I'm well off base!)

A:Dell SupportAssist - says driver updates are installed but still showing need to be installed after refresh?

Don't use Dell Support assist with windows 10. Windows 10 will install generic drivers if Dell doesn't have win 10 drivers. You should mention the full model name of the computer. Does Dell support your model for upgrading to win 10? If so, get the win 10 drivers from Dell Drivers and Downloads.

A:Windows Update Driver Updates

I can only speak for myself, others may have different views. I recently had a number of problems related to Windows 10 Updates [including drivers].

For the present my policy is to go directly to the relevant manufacturer for driver updates. A review over a number of forums, Intel in particular reveals Intel and Microsoft apparently unable to resolve problems caused by updates. I'll stick with Intel for the moment.

I recently made a new fresh install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I was using it already, but had to format and reinstall, so everything is new and clean.

I have noticed something strange in windows update: optional driver updates for some devices (such as my monitor or the realtek network adapter) are no longer available and they are not showing in the available optional updates list. They seem to work ok but they are displayed in device manager using the generic microsoft drivers.

For example, whenever a new network adapter driver was available, I used to receive a windows update notification telling me that new Realtek drivers were available. Now they are not showing anymore.

Settings for Windows update are "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and "include recommended updates" is ticked.

A:Driver updates not showing in Windows Update

Did you install SP1? It is possible that the updated SP1 files are more recent than the previously shown drivers in WU.

Also, I have noticed that WU never includes the most recent driver available for a system, just usually an older one that is fully compatible with your OS - I noticed this time and time again with nVidia drivers, for example, WU wants to install 169.25, whereas the newest driver version is actually 170.16....

Hen in doubt, I go with the latest drivers from the hardware manufacturer's site as opposed ot Windows Update.

A:Windows Update Sufficient for Driver Updates?

Windows Update can provide driver updates if set up to do so. Driver update software is generally a waste of time and money, since they invariably charge you for drivers which you can get for free from the hardware manufacturer's website. In addition, these are often a couple or so releases behind, so I recommend just downloading them directly from the manufacturer.

A:New Update Checking Software Automatically Installed itself

You apparently have Skype installed in your computer.

There's no need for it to load automatically or to notify you of updates automatically.

You can manually start it when you want to use it, and you can manually check for new updates.

---------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search box, then press Enter.

When the small "System Configuration" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

Uncheck the Skype-related entries.

Click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start, then type SERVICES.MSC in the search box, then press Enter.

When the "Services" window appears, expand it so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click the Skype-related entries to open their properties window.

Change "Startup Type" to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

Restart the computer.

Hi people of windows 8,
I am experiencing an issue with a prolific USB serial adapter on win8.1.
Google taught me the adapter works with an older driver but not with the latest one.
I can get it to work with driver version 3.2, but when I reboot, the driver is automatically reset to 3.4 and the adapter stops working. I have to manually modify this every time which obviously is a hassle.
Things I tried: in device manager, right click the device, delete the driver. This only works until the next reboot.
Manually setting the driver to v3.2-> same result.
control panel>software: there is no option to delete version 3.4, only to delete version 3.2

Could anyone tell me how to delete v3.4 definitively and to stop windows from updating to the faulty driver?

A:usb serial driver updates automatically to faulty version

You can try to rollback that driver in device manager (from 3.4 to 3.2). That should work for you and it should be permanent:

Good luck,

A:Windows update "hang" - menu shortcut & installed updates

I'm not sure that resetting WU would actually cure your problem - it sounds to me more of a systemic problem, possibly to do with one of the involved technologies (scripting, NET, etc.).

My wuapp.exe has TrustedInstaller as owner, with only Read and Execute permissions for users and Admins.

When trying to use Windows Update, the updates download successfully but fail to install. The following message appears: "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed." I have turned my antivirus software off, I have tried updating manually, I have tried updating one at a time. Nothing seems to work. I now have a backlog of 13 updates that I'm supposed to install. Can anyone please help? THANKS!

Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking" (restart while tapping F8 repeatedly) and see if you can install the updates. This should work.

The accelerator in use the Mobile Intel (R)4 Series Express Chipset Family

The version is the 1508

I downloaded the 32 bit version for windows vista but can't seem to update to the new version.
I keep getting the above mentioned error report.
I tried the update utility online which keeps telling me the same.I hope there;s a way to get around this .

Hope to hear and thanks is advance.

A:Driver update error: driver being installed is not validated

Hi

The error means that you try to install an driver which is not compatible with the graphic card.

What notebook do you have and what graphic chip does this notebook support?

While looking into recently installed Windows Updates I noticed something strange.

This month there were five Important Office 2007 updates offered to me. I installed them and it shows this in Update History. But when I look in Installed Updates (where I would need to uninstall from) it lists 20 something updates from that same date.

How is this possible? Are there other updates within the main update? I've never spent a lot of time looking at Installed Updates but it seems this may occur for other updates as well.

A:Update History vs. Installed Updates

They often do not match. Mine don't.

"View Update History" often only shows more recent updates.

The one marked "Installed Updates" shows the entire list and allows for uninstalling them if necessary.

Nothing to worry about.

Hello Recently I've been troubleshooting random hangs which one of the solution was to uninstall the following updates if I had installed uninstalling after updates certain KB2952664 "automatically" any of them installed - KB - KB - KB I had KB and KB installed on th of April which after creating an restore point I successfully uninstalled them via control panel When I checked the installed update those updates KB2952664 installed "automatically" after uninstalling certain updates were gone for good However I've noticed two significant changes after uninstalling - KB has been installed right after the uninstalling process I'm not sure when it was exactly installed before or after restart It's been dated as today rd of June which it shows up on the installed updates - When I checked the quot Windows update quot tab it says I've never checked for any updates nor installed one The update history and hidden updates has been wiped out as well For the second point I was able to check for updates which brought back all the hidden updates I kept running the scans until there were no updates found As for the first point I don't know what caused to install KB again automatically I've tried uninstalling this freshly installed update however it's still there listed on the installed updates I'm not sure how to check if the uninstalling has been successful or not but the process was smooth no endless waits or errors popped during the process as well as two restore point has been created one for the initial removal dated th of April and the other one for the newly installed KB dated today As a result is there a way to fix this quot problem quot or better yet remove KB completely P S For the second point I've mentioned above is that normal occurrence It's weird that everything has been wiped out like that in windows update after uninstalling the initial updates

A:KB2952664 installed "automatically" after uninstalling certain updates

How did you actually do the uninstall of KB2952664? using Control Panel>Installed Updates, or the WUSA command?
Try using the following command in an Elevated Command Prompt:

wusa /uninstall /kb:2952664

reboot once it's finished, then do a Check for Updates, and hide the KB when it's found again.

I recently set up a new Dell 7710 Precision Workstation (Xeon E3-1535M v5 w/Intel HD Graphics P530; Nvidia Quadro M5000M; Windows 7 Pro). The Dell Precision Optimizer (DPPO) tells me there are no updates at all (no Critical, Recommended, or Optional). However, the Intel Driver Update Utility tells me I have an older chipset (14.6.1.1030) that should be replaced by a newer chipset (10.0.27). I don't know if the DPPO is taking into account particular aspects of this system that make the 14.6.1.1030 the “correct” (even if not the latest) chipset. Perhaps the DPPO should override the Intel utility. Any thoughts?

When I access Windows Update 'Installed Updates' there is nothing there apart from Office2010, Adobe Reader, Silverlight and Visual C++ updates installed.

There are always three pending updates to be found in Windows Update: KB2977759 and KB3004469 and Windows IE9. The two KB updates will install, then show up in 'Check for Updates' repeatedly or occasionally fail and show error 80070002. The IE9 update receives error code 9C48.

Running Windows Update Troubleshooter displays error 0x80070003 - not fixed.

I've tried this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/910336
All drivers are updated.
Also tried WSUSoffline.
I've more or less tried every solution that I could find over several days of trawling the net. At this stage any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so recently, i installed an optional update through Windows update on to my Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit system. When i logged on, i noticed that my netgear wireless internet card was no longer working at all. I tried to uninstall the update since it seemed to be working before it was added. however even though it shows up in the "update history" tab, it does not show up in the "installed updates" tab.

the exact update name:
-Broadcom driver update for Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter

anyone know how i can get rid of it/downgrade it to the previous working version?

A:Update shows in history, but not in installed updates

Yeah, that is because it is a driver. Go to Device Manager > under Network Adaptors you will find your Broadcom > double click on it and go to the Driver tab. There you can roll- back.

Got a new PC with Win 7 Pro+ SP 1 already installed.
I believe some past Win 7 updates were done by the company I bought it from
But I think there were / are still a lot of updates to be added
Windows Update is hanging on 'Checking for updates'

I was thinking it might be best to just install the new July 2016 Rollup update, however...
Can I install the rollup update on top of whatever Win 7 updates have already been added to this PC?
Will the rollup update installer know which ones are already on the pc and ignore them?
Or will the previous updates interfere with the rollup update and screw up my pc?

Thanks for any advice and / or best steps to take for getting my new pc fully updated (sans Win 10 )

A:Can Win 7 rollup update be installed over past updates

Hi Metroid, it is okay to install the July rollup. This is MS new way of delivering recommended updates for that month. Instead of delivering them as separate updates they just all get bundled into one package now. It won't include security updates though, or updates that were released before MS switched to this method. So you still might have some to install after the rollup has been installed.

I manually uninstalled an update some time ago, and when viewing Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Updates the update in question is not listed. However, going in Windows Update > Update History, the update is listed as status = successful and the date installed is shown. Is there any other way to verify that the update is either hidden or uninstalled and not successfully (currently) installed? Thanks.

Hello, I would be grateful if anyone can help with this query.

On 1 June 2013 I took my pc back to Factory Settings and did a clean install of Windows installing all the relevant important updates for Vista. My pc is now up-to-date but one thing puzzles me. My list of installed updates lists a significant number of updates installed in 2008. (Two installed on 21/01/2008 and 39 from 21/10/2008). I would have expected that all updates listed would have an installation date on or after 1 June 2013.

I would be grateful if someone could explain this for me.

A:Why do my installed updates list updates installed prior to date of clean install

One important question, when did you buy the computer?
Was it after the installation date that shows, now?

Two basic questions while I'm building a zero-day, fully-updated Windows system with nothing else on it for imaging.

1. After reinstall, I noticed that populating Installed Updates took forever, while you had to wait for the dreaded green line moving rightwards. Is this normal ? I don't remember having to wait under my previous install.

2. After reading about the great Microsoft debacle of trying to push Windows 10 down everybody's throat through Windows Updates, I'm seriousy considering switching off Updates altogether and checking manually. When do Updates occur ? Is it still Patch Tuesday ?

A:Delay for displaying installed updates + update schedule

Microsoft has shifted to patch as needed. You may get some updates on various days. It all depends on Microsoft.
I check manually every few days. Some times it takes a long time to download them. All depends if you hit a Microsoft server that isn't busy.

I tried updating my computer last night. After the updates have been downloaded, this screen appears:

There are about 40 updates that I've not yet installed. I've tried going through and just randomly selecting them, to see if that would work, but it doesn't.

What could be causing this? Is there anyway to fix it without doing a clean install of XP? I searched on google, and everything I tried that I found, didn't help.

There is a listing for "USB Composite Device" under "Devices" that shows "Brother MFC8600/9650 Series" as a scanner. Not sure what that means.

That means your unit is a MultiFunction device and include Printer, Fax, Copier and Scanner. Sometimes the scanner part will be picked up as a separate device because Win7 has a built-in function for scanning.

Until the October 2014 updates I would always receive a sytray notice of which updates had been installed. To clarify, after new Windows Updates were installed and with or without a reboot of the system, I would receive a systray notification that new updates had been installed and upon clicking that notification a window would open and show the updates that had been installed and success or failure status.

I no longer receive that notification. This was true for the October and November patch Tuesday updates. I can open Windows Update and select View Update History and see that the updates were installed but the systray notification only showed the latest installation history and was more convenient that having to open Windows Update to view the update history.

Anyone have any idea as to what caused the systray notification to stop working after updates were installed? OS is Win 7 Home Premium SP 1.

TIA for any replies.

This is a download that will run a check on your system and usually repair it. Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed!  Please be aware that HP does not guarantee Windows 10 drivers will be available from Windows Update. Please get back to me how this goes. You can say thanks for trying to help by clicking the Thumbs Up below! Thanks.

Hello,
We have a barcode label printer device which when connected through USB on a Windows 7 machine automatically loads a windows approved driver from the driver store. This driver does not work as expected, so we are planning to use another custom driver provided
by the vendor, which we will be deploying it through SCCM. However, there may be cases where users will have inserted the printer before these custom drivers are in place which would cause these default generic drivers to load.
So our aim is to,
1. Remove this auto loaded default driver from the system if present
2. also, if possible, to remove it from the Windows driver store itself.
3. We do not want to change the Windows Default plug and play driver loading behaviour which would affect other USB devices.
Is there a command line to do this?
Thanks in advance.
Steve

Today I got in the mail my Corsair 600T case. After a couple hours of getting everything switched out, I hooked it up and was ready to go. But I get nothing. In bios, all six of my sata ports read "not detected". I have my boot 500gb in sata1 and my 2.0 TB (steam folder) in sata 2... It's so hard to find a solution for this online because it's so strange... I've hooked everything up just as it was before... And am feeling very, very helpless. If anyone has had a similar issue and somehow found a solution... Your help would be greatly appreciated!

I have my Windows Update set to ask me before it installs anything, because I like to know what's happening on my computer, but there are certain updates that happen regularly that I'd like to let go through automatically (like Windows Defender updates). Is there a way to do this where I can allow repeat updates like the Windows Defender definitions to go through on their own, while having the computer still ask me about other ones?

Thanks!

A:Is there a way to set some Windows Updates to go automatically, but not others?

No ! The only way you can individually update is by updating manually !

Okay, so I'm helping a friend out in building his first computer but the problem we're facing now is that the monitor connected up to the computer (that's finally put together) doesn't show anything, and the USB devices (being the keyboard and mouse) connected don't work.
If there's anything you'd like to ask about the build, what's connected what's not, feel free to ask; I'll tell you what you want to know.

*Things I know for sure*
The mouse and keyboard aren't broken.
The monitor worked 2 days ago, so I highly doubt the monitor just stopped working all of a sudden?

A:Monitor doesn't work and USB devices aren't detected

*UPDATE*
So... my friend managed to get it working by himself, but what bugs me is that the problem was with the RAM.
There are four ram slots; so RAM Slot 1, 2, 3 & 4.
1 & 2 are the first 2 rows of RAM that's closer to the CPU slot/cooler, and the cooler was already installed (Cumbersome)
So decided to use RAM slots 3 & 4 instead.
For some reason THIS was the problem; what had to be done at the end was RAM slots 1 & 4.
Slotting in the RAM with any other combination other than 1 & 4 didn't allow the computer to recognise the monitor or the USB devices for some reason.
Although the problem is solved now I would still like to know what went wrong, I want to learn from mistakes.

In my action center im receiving this message "windows could not check for updates automatically". I dont know why Im getting this message because this is a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 using my manufacturers restore DVD. Ive tried MSFIXIT tools and other microsoft support suggestions and nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me out here? I dont know what Im missing.

A:"Windows could not check for updates automatically"

In the windows update history, it should give an error message. A common one is if you have the wrong date and time. I assume the internet connection is ok.

This error comes up in Action Center after logging into Windows. When I try to manually check for updates, it fails with a code 800b0100 unknown error. The PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1.

I have tried to run the System Update Readiness tool from the Microsoft website to fix but to no avail.

sfc /scannow results in Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I have attached c:\windows\logs\CBS below.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Azeworai,
The error code suggests a corrupted download of the updates. Can you try deleting the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download? This should be safe. And then try to download and install the updates again.

I have made sure I am logged in as administrator.
Also tried rebooting PC, modem and router.
Done Malware and Virus scans.
I'm also having trouble installing updates from online services. I think these problems are related.
Any help appreciated, thanks guys.

Hello,

trying to get my Windows to update. When I tell it to try, it scans for a while and them stops.

No error code, it's just in red and listed as an important message in the action center.
(Before people tell me to try in Safemode, I did, and you can't. Even though Microsoft says to try that, it's not possible )

Some updates like this IE8 security update that was released the 14th, we're not getting in Windows update. Why?

Shouldn't we at least get important or critical security updates even in the lastest builds? I could see why maybe not other less important updates but critical security ones?

And when I try to install it says it's not applicable to my system but updates like this one should clearly be applicable, no?

Download details: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 Client Beta (KB963027)
Download details: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 Client Beta for x64-based Systems (KB963027)

MS09-014: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer

A:Why aren't we getting some important Updates

It could be that the issues these fix are already fixed in later builds. 7000 is still the only 1 (according to M$) that the public have and IE8 on that was too buggy. As far as I can tell build 7057 upwards have the full IE8 and not just the beta that's packed with 7000.

Hi fellows,

I have win7 x64 build 7600.
Today it notifies that there are two new updates for win7.

I pressed Install Updates .
The updates installed successfully, but I receive the notification yet!

What should I have done to fix it ?
Thanks

A:Two new updates aren't installing ?

Do they show up in " Installed Updates" ? Try the check for updates button.
Maybe a restart will clear that up.

Microsoft have moved their Windows Autorun V2.1 [1] (967940) update patch from optional updates to automatic updates. This is the same patch that was released in last month?s patch Tuesday. When Windows update is next run, this patch will automatically be selected to apply to your machine. Hello Everybody, Hope you all had a Good Holiday and a Happy New Year !I have my updates set to;"Windows Updates, Notify Me but don't automatically install", and have noticed my last update was 12/25/08 Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7.I think I am not getting my updates, I went to the calender schedule from BS, but am not really sure exactly how to use that ? It would be nice if there were some instructions, . . maybe there are somewhere, but I haven;t found them.I haven't gone to the Windows update page yet, but will, but first if you don't mind I'd like to get your take on this ?

A:Windows Updates, Notify Me but don't automatically install

I did get to the updates and see that the only one found is ;

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806) (x86)
My guess this looks right, although actually, at this time I'm not really sure what Framework 2. is, so I assume everything is in order, I just thought maybe for some reason the updates have skipped over me this last week, I don't know how long ago, the update it chose has been there and that it was something I needed.

Hello,

I would like Windows to automatically download and install its updates when I walk away from my machine for more than 5 minutes. How can this be set up?
Thanks for your help!

A:How to install Windows updates automatically when idle?

It doesn't look like the default settings provided by Microsoft allows for this kind of update schedule.

Windows Update Settings - Change

I leave automatic updates turned off. When I know I'm going to be away from the computer for an extended period of time I manually check for updates and select those updates I want to install. Usually takes less than 60 seconds to do a manual check and start the update process.

But there's a couple of things to consider. Some updates require a reboot to finish installing. Your computer will just sit there until you return waiting for that reboot. So you really won't be saving any time by letting the computer start installing updates after that 5 minute delay. The other major issue is if you have a lot of updates to install (say, more than 5.) There's always a possibility that installing many updates at one time could cause your computer to crash or blue screen. Many people have experienced this based on questions received at Seven Forums.

It might be better to install just a few updates at a time, keep track of the KB numbers, and reboot after each group of 3 - 5. If there are any problems you'll know which group to uninstall. Then you can install them one at a time, rebooting after each one. They'll either all install correctly or you'll know exactly which update is causing the problem. Save it for last and continue installing the next group. Yes, it's a lot slower this way but I think it offers a better update experience with a lot fewer install problems. IMHO.

Sorry for not being more help.

That error you are getting seems to be related a burning program called B's Clip. You have uninstalled your virus protection? I don't see an Anti Virus Program running on your machineDownload and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.

Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys. ~ Courtesy of boopmePlease download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here or here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. I am thinking of upgrading to Windows 8.
I have 3 questions about it.

Will it automatically find the programs I have installed on my D: drive or will I have to install them again?
Does it have a good emulator for Windows 95? I still have some programs designed to run on Win 95, they are programs I use and I do not want to abandon them.
Also, will Windows 8 allow me to use an interface that is point and click with a mouse. I do not have a touch screen.

A:Solved: Will Windows 8 automatically find programs already installed on D: drive

As you are running 7 Ultimate 64 bit you can upgrade to windows 8 Pro 64bit and keep more or less everything see this

Upgrading from Windows 7Click to expand...

This is the simplest upgrade path of all. You can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro from any version of Windows 7, and you can choose whether you want to migrate files, settings, and programs, just files, or nothing. Be sure to pay close attention to the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, which will alert you to any programs or drivers that must be uninstalled before the upgrade or updated afterwards.Click to expand...

Here is the official Microsoft upgrade doc
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/jj203353.aspx
so you cannot upgrade and keep all to OTHER than windows 8 Pro
Yes it does have compatibility going back to win95 but that does NOT mean that the program will run without problems please see screenshot
Before you start run the windows 8 upgrade assistant
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8
and the 8.1
You cannot upgrade to 8.1 from 7 and keep all. I do appreciate that you said to 8 however.
You can of course later on go from 8 to 8.1
Please ensure that you have all backed up - it can go wrong just like any other install.
Yes you can use it with a mouse and keyboard just as 7. It is not the OS itself that enables touch.

Hello all. I recently decided i was going to re-install XP. installed the beginning files, rebooted computer, and decided it was going to be more of a hastle than I thought. I started up windows regularly, and all was well.

then i noticed there was something up with the monitor display. seems the drivers had uninstalled. no worries, I check the device manager, and the two display adapters had a yellow exclamation point near them. No worries! I uninstalled both, and restarted. windows found them, they re-installed, i installed my monitor drivers, and all was well.

until...

I restarted my computer the next day. and the same problem. the display adapters aren't staying 'found'. and i'm forced to uninstall them, restart, have the comp find them again, and then re-install the monitor drivers.

whats going on with my computer? :(

A:Display Adapter problems - they aren't staying installed!

Did you try installing a different (possibly newer) driver(s)? Do you know what model/make your graphics card is? If so, go to the manufacturers website and get the newest driver for it. Sometimes Windows automatically finding drivers for devices doesn't always work perfectly.

One other possibility---though its a stretch--is that you possibly also installed software which doesn't allow any alterations to the os and rolls the system back after each reboot. I have Online Armor installed on one of my systems and I have to allow for any changes made to my system. It's unlikely that this is what's going on, but not impossible.

Hi My question is How can I determine if a downloadable application offered by a Web site is indeed safe i e not malware or spam before I actually do download and install the program Here are the gory details I was curious about updates to my computer's BIOS and drivers so I searched Google and turned up a web-site that offers a download that scans your computer to determine the current BIOS and driver versions then provides a checklist showing which are up-to-date and which aren't I ran it and it looks pretty neat http driveragent com It also provides links to download the updates Unfortunately that costs about for a year's subscription It's not just driver Downloading updates safely update & BIOS that I'm broke it's also kind of scary My question may be Downloading BIOS update & driver updates safely foolish especially since I downloaded and installed the program that does the checking without knowing anything about it But I'd really like to know if there is a way to determine how Downloading BIOS update & driver updates safely safe a downloadable application is quot before quot actually downloading and installing it Many thanks I look forward to hearing your advice JimB

A:Downloading BIOS update & driver updates safely

hello & welcome to TSF ,

driveragent is a very safe place to get your drivers from .....

i have a standing subscription with them for i do alot of repairs on a daily basis and trust them greatly and it is so much quicker & easier for me !!

now the best way you can get your drivers for free is to go to the home site of the manufacturer of the pc you have or the for the hardware that you have installed & to know the types of software you are using that require specific drivers like (Realtek AC/97audio & nVidia video & ATI chipsets & Intel & AMD ) and so many more that are used to run certain applications on a pc / there is quite a few that Microsoft offers thru the update site/plus many other trusted sites that you can get them from

but you need to know the specific driver that you need for you can get a driver that may look like the one that you need but rather is for a diifernt application and then you are then going to create a driver conflict and then you have issues on your pc and have to trouble shoot to find the issue

for you see some drivers for one hp will work on a dell , but then they wont for certain hp computers /then you have some dell drivers that will work on a hp or many differnt hps

then you have the differnce of having a laptop from a desktop

so the need to know is very inportant & can be time comsuming

i hope that i have shed a little light on the subject for you

so what drivers are you wanting to update / well what type of pc do you have / is it a prebuild ( purchased from a store like a Dell or HP ) or is it a custom build (you built it yor self or had someone build it for you ) ?

Mike

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silverlight today) so the secret might be to install updates in smaller batches instead of trying to install all dozen or so available updates in a single update session.

I keep getting this message from the Action center (Win7 Home Prem) - When I click on it to open it looks for Windows updates, if it finds any I can install no problem. After reboot, the message will appear again after a few minutes and tells me "Updates were installed: Never" but if I go to Update history it shows the current updates installed successfully. Using the troubleshooter it says: Windows Update error 0x80070005 but does not fix it. I have checked the services and reset the update settings, still get the error. Can I install Windows Updates Automatically, but not restart automatically?
Or disable restarting after installing updates?
I am leaving my computer to run programs while I am away, and it is a b*tch to see coming home and see Windows restarted.
I chose the option to download, but ask me to install. That is my solution, but I was wondering if there was any way to disable automatic restarting.
(I know, just install when you want is a great option, I was just wondering, that is it.)

P.S.: Do we have a delete post option in the forum. At least in the next 15 minutes or an hour, or posts without a reply?

A:Can I install Windows Updates Automatically, but not restart auto?

If you've set Updates to ask you to install, you are installing them yourself not automatically so install them when you can handle the restart but not when you are doing something else.

A:Windows could not check for updates automatically (Important) -V. Slow

It sounds to me as if you have very limited free space on your machine?
You say you ran CHKDSK - let's have a look at the result of that, (and a few other things)...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx

A:Windows Automatic Updates Automatically Disables After Reboot

Hey man,
can you get onto your OS at all.  Meaning in normal boot or in Safe mode?
Do you have more than one antivirus running, if so the new or other antivirus will always try to disable security center being that with the expection of MBAM you dont want two antiviruses running, they will fight eachother.
To stop the issue try this

After you login

Press Windows key + R
Type: services.msc
Scroll down to Windows Defender
Select it make sure it is running and it is status is set to Automatic.
If not fixed AND if you have another antivirus you can either delete the 3rd party antivirus, or in this same services.msc turn off windows defender, which most antiviruses will do for you be default.

Still broken
this is from www.answers.microsoft.com

But BEFORE you do any of this please backup your files and make a recovery disc so IF something happens you can get back to at least where you are now.  If you have any questions please ask me before you post.  I will check back around noon CST USA.
Try the above stuff first and reboot, then do the below, but BACKUP first  here is a guide from Microsoft.com

Consider changing the way Security Center alerts to disable the warning.

There have been some recent reports of this situation. It may be due to a miscommunication between MSE and the WMI database. It may also be due to undetected malware.
Some people report that opening MSE, performing an update check and turning off and back on again the MSE real time protection resolves the issue temporarily or permanently.

If the WMI repository is broken, the following may help:
We've seen a number of reports here of this behavior following the recent upgrade of MSE.
I suspect that there are multiple causes.
Some have reported that uninstalling and reinstalling MSE resolves it.
Others have said that forcing an update or running a scan with MSE each time it happens solves it after a few days.
Others have reported that turning real time protection of and back on has resolved it.
And still others indicate nothing fixes it.
The problem can also be due to a broken WMI repository (see below) and perhaps a resource issue -- that is, the PC is low on memory or running slowly due to many programs and processes starting with Windows causing MSE and the Alert Center to not communicate in a timely manner after which it gives up (either reporting status to WMI, or WMI querying the MSE status). Try a clean boot or disabling excess startup programs to see if that's your case.
Here are procedures to correct the WMI repository that causes the Windows Security Center to report that no antivirus, antispyware, or firewall is active, yet MSE is actively protecting your PC and in green status.

When running this in Vista7, you must run the procedures as an administrator, elevated.

Method A
Start>Run>services.msc [enter]
Scroll down to Windows Management Instrumentation and double-click it.
Now click on the "Pause" button. Leave that window open and double-click
My Computer. Navigate to %systemroot%\Windows\System32\wbem (where
%systemroot% is the drive where XP is installed). Delete the Repository
folder and *only* the Repository folder. Now go back to the WMI service
window you left open and restart the service.
This will rebuild the Repository and hopefully straighten out the
incorrect entries for all your duplicates.
In order to see the Windows files, you may need to unhide them:
Make sure you are able to see all hidden files and extensions (View tab
in Folder Options).
Check "Display the contents of system folders".
Check "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and click "OK" to the
dialog box.

Method B from MVP Torgeir Bakken (more elegant)
Open a command window (Start/Run --> cmd.exe) and run the following commands:

net stop winmgmt
cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem
ren repository repository.old... Read more

I recently did some work on someones computer, and noticed that Vista was asking for the drivers to an Nvidia 6150. Assuming they weren't installed, I downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia's website and installed them with no problem. And it appeared that the alert box had went away and stopped appearing. Now it's back again. Anybody know why?

Hello All,

I was referred here by NeonFx from the TechGuy Security forum. He had me run a slew of anti-virus/anti-spyware diagnostics. According to NeonFx my system is currently infection free and he states the problem lies elsewhere.

He also had me run the Windows Update FixIt tool in both Default and Aggressive mode - both of which did not fix the problem. So what is the problem??

PROBLEM:

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):

"Some updates were unable to be installed..."

This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440)...

Stumped, stumped and stumped...
