I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try removing or reformatting the partition from Disk Management. If you can't, see if you can delete the partition and create a new one.

What exactly is ReadyBoost, and do I need it?

Also, I want to format the flash drive from FAT32 to NTFS. Apparently, the default allocation unit for NTFS is 4096 bytes. Do I accept this, or should I change it (see attached png)?

And if I reformat from FAT32 to NTFS, will I be deleting the drive's pre-installed ReadyBoost capability?

Thanks!

A:Formatting 16Gb Flash Drive

Many here aren't fond of the ReadyBoost feature and with 8 gb's of quality ram the need is moot, but with that being said if your system allows a portion or all of the drive to allocated to RB then I've noticed slight improvements but ever since upping the ante with the SSD my system won't even recognized a need for it. To my knowledge by reformatting you won't be eliminating the RB feature as it's in W7 and not the flash drive.

I have been trying to format the above drive, but it has come up with write protected

I have tried deleting them,
I have tried formatting the drive,
I have tried 'unlocker'
I have run 'flash drive/ card test (this took nearly 8 hours)
I have tried to delete these files both with XP and Win 7
There are no switches or slides, I dont have to twist anything

I have tried various programs to format it

This Flash drive is the one they had on the gadget show, supposed to be bulletproof, but not mch cop if it cant be used, accessed or formatted

Hello all,

I have a 16gb Patriot XT portable Flash Drive and was wondering if it is possible to have 8gb allotted for Windows and the other 8gb allotted for Mac.

Thanks,

A:16gb Flash Drive split for Mac AND Windows??

I have done this with external hard drives but not with a thumbdrive. I can't see why it would work on one and not the other.

This is the program I have used : Mediafour - MacDrive - Access Mac Disks | . Not a free one but it works.

You may want to take some time to read the website to be sure it will do what you want. There is a 5-day free trial period.

EDIT: (Clarification): I had the opportunity to use Mac Drive last night. Owner wanted to delete the Windows partition and use the entire LaCie external hard drive for Mac files.

Mac Drive can not format Windows partitions or create HFS+ partitions from Unallocated Space.
The procedure would be to delete the partition creating unallocated space using Windows, and then use a Mac computer to create the MAC partition and format it HFS+.

In addition: most flash drives can not be partitioned without hacking them to not be recognized as Removable Media, so it is not a straight-forward, simple procedure at all. http://www.ghacks.net/2009/04/17/par...-flash-drives/ . But even this is an XP trick and may not work with W7.

For your "partitionable" thumb drive you would use Disk Management to create a Windows partition, leaving the remaining space as Unallocated.

I'm going to use two 16Gb USB flash drives strictly for backing up data files and storing the drives alternately every month offsite. I will need to use the flash drives mainly in my Windows 7 machine, but I might need to access them with a Windows XP laptop.

Should I format the flash drives FAT32 or NTFS?

Thanks.

A:16Gb flash drive FAT32 or NTFS?

doesnt really matter, depends on the data u plan to put on the drive. why not use exFAT thats what exFAT is for i thought.

A:PNY 16GB Flash Drive no longer being recognized

You can save the flash drive but probably not the data on it.

Try this:
Plug the flash drive in.
Unplug all other flash drives if any are plugged in. (ideally only usb device should be the broken flash drive.)
Download, unzip, and run the exe found here.
Copy and paste the output of the program and post it here. Then we can move on to step 2.

Aloha,
I am trying to copy some files from my old Win98 SE computer (bought in 2000) to move to my new computer and was trying to use a small 1GB capacity flash drive. The file is way more than that so I bought a HP USB 16GB v255w flash drive but the old computer does not recognize it. Is there a driver to make it work in Win 98SE? The tech at Best Buy said it would work on my computer even though it isn't listed on the spec for Win 98 SE.

A:P USB 16GB Flash Drive Driver Question

Aloha,
I checked my 1GB flash drive and it showed 565MB used (drive showed no used files) and 411MB free and realized that Win 98 is not recognizing the whole 1GB flash drive. So now I am dead meat on using a flash drive since it won't recognize the whole 1GB flash drive. I think that the 16GB will never work, driver or no driver (if it was recognized, it probably would be the same as the 1GB drive). Maybe I could run a serial cable between both computers but I don't know if my new computer has a serial port (must check). Any suggestions?

I am looking to buy a new flash drive. I am looking for 16GB or 32GB drive. There is only two requirements: cap-less, and at least 10MBps Up/Down speed. I have hit up all the usual site (newegg, tiger direct, and amazon) with some luck but I am not willing to spent over $100 for a flash drive.

Any ideas?

A:16GB-32GB flash drive options..

I have a Patriot Dash 16GB and it meets your requirements, but barely. Writing to it after several minutes is probably down in the 15MB/sec range after initially starting out at 70+.

Avoid the Patriot Razzo 16GB, I also have it (bought it when I thought I lost my Dash) and it is painfully slow. There is also a 32GB version of it, but I imagine it also sucks.

I don't have any experience with the Xporter XT Boosts, but by the name alone I expect that it would be faster than my Dash. But it is uglier than both the Dash and the Razzo

Don't know anything about other brands because my only other flash drive is a 1GB Sandisk Cruzer Mini and its pretty slow, but at 1GB even slow doesn't take too long to fill. Just be wary of Sandisk because of the U3 crap that is on the new ones (thankfully mine doesn't have it).

Hello. I bought a little 16 GB flash drive by Emtec yesterday because it was on sale for ten bucks at Office Max. I tested it out transferring a few music files from my laptop to my PC, and it worked like a charm. Around half an hour ago, I decided to see what it can really do. I used Unetbootin and loaded Damn Small Linux. I shut the computer down and opened up the BIOS Boot Options, and I was only picking up my computer's hard drive. Hmm. So I boot it as I normally would, and it went fine. Assuming it was that Linux black magic, I loaded a different distribution, and opened up the BIOS again. What the heck? The USB still isnt' showing up. I restarted a few times just to make sure it wasn't just a fluke, and it's still not showing up.
Any idea what's going on here?

A software company send me a program on a usb flash drive - Toshiba 16GB. I just received another one as they upgraded my program. I went to format the little toy and it tells me that it is WRITE PROTECTED.

I tried to go in regedit to see if the value for write protect is set 0 or 1 - needs to be 0.

I tried couple of freewares but failed.

I purchased a brand new memory stick recently and I haven't been able to get it to work. I put files into it and when I try to play it on my Xbox 360 the files are gone and are replaced by strange files and folders I have never seen before that are unopenable. The folder says it was last modified in 1980. I have formatted the drive every way I believe you can. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a 16GB Cruzer Blade flash drive. I synched all my music into it by Genre, with Windows Media Player(Vista): "Blues", "Guitar", "Fifties", and so forth..about 9GB total. While the total available after synch seems to be correct, only half of the Genre actually show up in Vista, so I can't drag-and-drop to play them. They will work in the older Windows XP..everything displays as it should. Is this a problem with Vista, or the filing system? I tried reformatting from VAT23(default) to NTFS and then reloading the device..samey-same. I've tried other identical Cruzer flash drives with the same result. Are they just junk, or is there another problem? Thanks.

Inspiron 14z n411z (Laptop): Authoritative confirmation of memory upgrade to 16 GB, 16GB, 16gb

There are various claims that 14z/n411z can be upgraded to 16GB (unofficial or therotical based on CPU-i5 being Sandy bridge)

Here are the main issues on this subject that has left many customers scramble for answers and find themselves confused:
* It is the interest of customers that Dell come out with an official statement "confirming" or "denying" if this is possible
* Yes, at the time of sale Dell stated that max permitted was 8GB. But now therotically (Sandy Bridge CPU can support 16Gb) and based on other users experiments it seems possible, but no concrete/firm proof available.
* If it is possible, Dell can always state that it will not support 16GB, though it (Dell) has tested it as possible in their labs.
* In the absence of a confirmation from Dell, most memory vendors are not selling memory 16 GB upgarde for Inspiron using their "configurators".
* There is another confusing twist to this problem, created by the fact there is another Dell XPS model facing same problem. But they newer CPU, for which most vendors are selling the memory upgrade on their configurators.
* For Dell, most users are now "past their Warranty" period. There is no liability in answering this question. In the LARGER interest of customers Dell should clear this doubt.
For those users who have done this at their home or office, can you please show us the "steps" and "results":
* Some users have claimed they have upgraded successfully to 16GB after updating their BIOS to current or latest version
* Can these early adopters post videos or steps on how they have done this. Please.

I have an external hard drive - ClickFree 527B3, 500GB. It doesn't have warranty. Whenever I try to write files to it it will stop working, and show up as empty, after 16GB have been written. I reformatted it and the same thing happened. I tried creating two (primary) NTFS partitions and only one worked in Disk Managment. Is there any hope for this drive?

A:External Hard Drive stops working after 16GB

Your ClickFree is a speciality product used to automatically backup the content of the PC to which it is plugged in. We may not know how it is configured to achieve that goal.

In general,

You may have to stick to the procedures laid down for the device on how to format it through ClickFree interface and how to use it.

I also understand you have a Master Reset facility that will reset the drive to factory defaults.

If all these do not resolve your problem you may have to take up the matter with the Tech Support for ClickFree.

You may also check Clickfree and Kooboodle Forums on some troubleshooting tips and other discussions.

You may also post a screenshot of how your ClickFree shows up in Windows Disk Management. ( Please click on the Show/Hide Console Tree and Show/Hide Action Pane icons on the tool bar of Windows Disk Management screen so that we get a full screen view without any truncation.)

A:Kingston DataTraveler 16Gb pen drive - slow speed under Windows 7?

Hello andreibutilca and welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't think 6.5 MB/s is bad. Remember, advertised speeds are done using the manufacturer's own testing guidelines and do not necessarily represent real world situations. It's kinda like my ISP. They advertise "up to" 6 Mbps download speed. I'm lucky if I get 3-4 Mbps.

I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of windows 7 onto this disk, and using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, I can select my ISO file, but when I go to select my USB drive, my computer does not recognize the flash drive as a flash drive. Is there a way to change the Flash Drive so Windows will recognize my Flash Drive as removable media? Smaller USB drives still work on my computer, so its not the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

A:Removable Flash Drive Recognized as a Local Disk and not a Flash Drive

Hello masonta. Welcome to the forum.

Let's start with this: can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window, expanded so we can read everything, with the USB stick installed?

You also might check in Device Manager to see if the stick shows up as a USB device, or a hard disk.

I would like to transfer all of the files on 1 flash drive to another flash drive. Dragging them takes too long. Is there a quicker way to transfer the files?

A:Transferring data from 1 flash drive to another flash drive

There really isn't another way to copy them. They have to physically read from one device and write on another. Depending on size of files and how many, it can indeed take a while. The only thing that would speed up the process is if you had USB 3.0 drives. I assume you are using 2.0.

If it works on the desktops, then it is not the pendrive. You might want to look at your laptop more. Have you tried different USB ports on your laptop? Are the USB 2.0 high speed ports, or just 1.0?

Sorry I am a computer novice; but, I am running out of hard drive C space and I thought maybe I could put Recovery Drive D on a flash drive in order to free up drive C space.

If this is possible, can you refer me to some instructions on how to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Can you put Recovery Drive D on a flash drive to free up hard drive

To be honest a recovery drive won't give you much space (10 GB or so?). You are better off with a USB external HDD and move your less accessed data to the external.

I wonder what others will say.

Basically, I want to use my usb flash drive or daemon tools to burn music and then rip into lossless formats. I tried optical storage, but has not given good results lately despite the fact the cd-rw is new. With USB drive, it is a u3 flash drive 1gb from sandisk. And I have daemon tools lite on windows 7. All I know is the main idea is to have one of the two(if possible) be passed as a cd burner. The only problem is, I do not know how to do that, and any help is appreciated.

A:usb flash drive OR a daemon tools virtual drive to use as a cd burner.

Hi Pheonix220. Welcome .

Daemon Tools is a disk emulator, which means that it will create 'images' or ISOs from a CD or other source and can then "mount" it so that it appears to be a physical drive on your system.

I'm not sure exactly what your goal is, but I find it unlikely that Daemon Tools will be of use unless you want to creae ISOs of music for mounting and playing?

If you are more specific about what your needs are, perhaps we can be more helpful.

I have a similar problem to a question asked in 2011- mine is on an Acer Veriton without optical drive. So I followed the advice there and changed the SATA BIOS from AHCI to Native IDE. The result of that was that I never go as far as the select partition screen - just the BSOD!I reset the BIOS and got the same result. So now I can't get anything to work on installing XP - yuck! The BSOD gave advice to use CHKDSK /f but as I don't have anything yet installed, I have no way of doing it. Now I have an unusable PC, thanks to WinToFlash.Tony

After Transferring file from Seagate External drive to flash drive 16G. (Verbatim)

I can't remove hardware device on Verbatim Flash drive to remove it.

Even after I close all the files, folders and programs in my computer.
It won't say "safe to remove device".

I have to switch off the computer to remove the flash drive.

Is this normal or what ?

If not what can be the problem ? I can fix ?

Is it safe to remove device even if I can't disable the usb flash drive ?
I closed all the files, fodlers and programs before I remove.

Thanks.

A:Transferring file from Seagate External drive to flash drive

The computer may still be saving data to the Flash. Or it is caught in ROM. If your certain the transfer is complete, you can pull the drive. You may want to do a Check Disk on the Flash Drive to make sure it is in good order.

A:Laptop needs USB floppy drive to reinstall Win XP, can I use flash drive/memory instead?

Well, you are going to have problems... Sorry to say...

First off, most PCs with SATA drives will have an option in the BIOS to place it in IDE mode. This assures that Windows Setup will be able to detect it as a drive with the ability to be installed to.

As for USB drives, it all depends on your BIOS version and manufacturer. Toshiba for example, does not support ANY usb device unless it is made by their company. It sucks, yes, but i guess for more money for crappy products.

You can install the drivers to a flash drive, but you will also have to make a bootable image to that drive, and load your windows setup files, manually format and partition the drive, copy the files over, then start the setup process to do that. It is a huge hassle that I had to deal with on a Toshiba Portege 3500.

Backing up is a bit easier. You can use the built in windows backup software (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System tools> Backup) and make a complete backup to an external drive to restore after format. The problem is YOU WILL ALSO TRANSFER THE VIRUSES YOU HAVE!!!

If you use the file and settings transfer wizard, you can transfer most of your stuff, but you WILL HAVE TO REINSTALL A LOT OF YOUR SOFTWARE, as it will not transfer your registry entries.
Your best bet is to get an Antivirus/spyware removal tool (Such as www.superantispyware.com) and an anti MAlware software (such as Malwayebytes). This will clear most of your infections, and gives you more time to backup your files and get software discs ready.

When I use DVD Flick Burning files mpg files or Nero burning audio cd from mp3s.
Does it matter whether I burn from source hard drive or flash drive ?

Is it better to copy files to hard drive first before burning ?
Is it less chance of getting errors ? Or doesn't make any difference ?

Since flash drive doesn't have any parts to wear out.
Is it better to use flash drive as source or it doesn't make any difference to wearing of the hard drive ? I think it still wears out hard drive in any case regardless what source you from, but does it make any difference ?

Thanks.

A:Burning files from hard drive or flash drive ?

It makes no difference. You can use either method. Flash drives can transfer the data to the cache and DVD drive fast enough to avoid any buffer underrun errors.

If you're worried about getting errors, just drop the burning speed down a notch from maximum.

I'm in the process of moving to an SSD and need to create a backup drive in order to repair the BIOS after transferring everything However flash Create recovery drive won't drive a recognize when I try to create one - the create a recovery drive program won't recognize the flash drive I have connected as a flash Create a recovery drive won't recognize flash drive drive I first tried with a SanDisk Cruzer which apparently had a quirk in that it Create a recovery drive won't recognize flash drive shows up as a hard drive instead of removable flash drive That seems to be well documented on forums all over the place and there is no fix So I purchased a cheap GB stick no brand and Windows I'm running x recognizes it as a removable disk However the create a backup utility still won't recognize it I've Create a recovery drive won't recognize flash drive found some random fixes that have worked for some such as plugging it into a different USB port but nothing has worked for me so far I've tried doing it with the quot copy the recovery partition quot option both checked and unchecked If there's no solution to this wonderful quot quirk quot of Windows then is there something else I can do to repair BIOS Seems like there's not a fix to my problem out there EDIT So as of right now I tried using HPs recovery software which seems to do the same thing as copying over your entire recovery partition That didn't work either However when I had both USB sticks plugged in the Windows supplied utility recognized the SanDisk Cruzer when I checked the quot copy the partition quot thing so this might be solved

A:Create a recovery drive won't recognize flash drive

You might save yourself a lot of aggravation by down loading a free copy of Macrium Reflect, you can make a Disk Image that can be restored to any drive it will fit on. or just copy/clone to your SSD. just make sure your current drive doesn't have more data than will fit on the SSD, Reflect will adjust the C: partition size

The recovery USB needs to work they are not created equal if Reflect doesn't recognize it get another one that will. I can't help you with the other program you are using Reflect is known to work for everyone.

Stinger.exe will run from a flash drive an will seek out and find most of the more recent worms and viruses. You can find it here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

I would think for any full fledged av program you could put the exe. file on the flash drive and then install it on most any computer. Such programs as Avast, Antivir, and AVG should work in that manner.

My question is in refrence to external hard drives. Is there an external hard drive out there that has similar properties to that of a flash drive. What I mean by this is can I get an external hard drive that I can drag items to it to save and just as easily access the file by opening the drive. So far I have two external hard drives and they are both similar in the fact that I can back up my files on them but I can't access them on the hard drive itself, I would actually have to recover files on my computer. Can anyone enlighten me on this issue.

A:External hard drive similar to flash drive?

Yes there are lots of external USB hard drives out there but I find even on Newegg that alot of them get crappy reviews for having bad software or not syncing correctly. They can get into very large sizes however like up to 2terabytes or more depending on what your budget is
That is a 640gb external hard drive pretty simple to use just plug it in and store your stuff. including data files for when you backing up your pc. Personally I shop at Frys Electronics they always have good deals but newegg has a big selection and sells things cheaper than Frys alot of the time

Apparently I need 5 posts to start doing links so below this post is the link to the external drive

I have had two Maxtor external hard drives fail on my wife's PC. Each one has only lasted 18 months or less. Even though the backup process was easy and automatic I am considering going with a Flash USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Thumb-type Drive to manually backup important files and images. Is there anything wrong with this method of backup that I'm unaware of?

My wife's PC has genealogy software with lots of files and associated images, etc. (for over 40,000 people), which is about 10GB in size. It is this information that needs to be backed-up whenever additions/changes are made.

I am thinking about replacing the [most recently] expired Maxtor external hard drive with either a 16GB or 32GB Flash USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Thumb-type Drive. Is this a reasonable method for backup? Which GB size would you recommend? Brand?

Thanks!

A:USB Flash Drive is identified as a Hard Disk Drive

Transfer your data to your computer.
Open command prompt with administrator privileges by going to Start,All Programs,Accessories,Command Prompt.Right click it and select "Run as administrator".
Type diskpart. Then type list disk.Find your USB drives and type select disk 3 if it is one of them. You can know by their size.DON'T select disk 0.It's your Windows drive. Then type clean.

Don't type it if you don't have backed up your files on the drive. This will delete the drive.
Then do the same for your other drive. If it is disk 4,type select disk 4 and then clean.

If I helped you,say it.

I am using win XP. I bought a generic flash drive and it worked well for two days. Now, my computer shows it as a removable drive, but when I try to access it, it asks me to insert a disc into it!!

Also, when I click properties - it shows there is no capacity on the flash drive. I am a beginner with computers, I would appreciate some help in layman terms. Thank you.

A:My Computer thinks my flash drive is a floppy drive! Help!

Did your Flash come with any software? Xp is obviously confused as to exactly what the drive is .
It may be that the drive is full. Try formatting it .Right click on the drive in My Computer.
If there is a Web page for the Drive see if they have drivers for it .Download the file.

Often you can plug the drive in and go to Device Manager . there you can uninstall the drive by right clicking on it and uninstall. Then reboot with the drive left in.Xp will try to install drivers when you get back to Desktop.Cancel that and use the Hardware Wizard to search for the drivers .Here you choose the device from the lists that are offered to you. That of course is if your drive is listed.

I just noticed my computer doing this today, i don't think its done it before.. anyway every time i insert my flash drive its a different drive letter, going in order. Like it went from N to O to P to Q.. Why won't it just use the same one (first available) each time? I've gone into disk management and set a drive letter but it doesn't stick, when I reinsert the drive its different again. It seems like windows doesn't want to recognize that this is the same drive, so each time it thinks its a new device.

My office workstation running Windows XP Pro is connected to the corporate network (Active Directory) so that I have storage space on the server. When I plug in a USB flash drive (any make), it takes over my network home directory drive letter. I can reassign the flash drive via disk management, but that is a pain, as I use flash drives a lot. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Our tech does not have a solution. It does not appear to be a problem on any other workstations on the system.

I forgot my password to login to Windows. I always use the number keypad password when logging on, but now the only option is the password, which I forgot. IMy Gateway won't boot from the CDdrive or a flassh drive. I have changed the boot order in BIOS, but it goes from the hard drive anyway.

My metro apps were minimizing after 10 seconds or so. I saw a post that it could be amtivirus related, so I downloaded tools to remove the ones I had used the past year. Malwarebytes' uninstaller clean up progrm told me it needed to reboot in safe mode. I let it do so.

I only can press DEL for BIOS setup or F12. I don't have a way to change it out of safe mode.

The Metro app issue could be from a recent Windows update.

I need extra storage space as my laptop has nearly run out of space on the back-up recovery drive.

I have masses of digitial photos on my laptop (all saved as highest quality) so the files are big. As I want to keep them all and keep adding to them, I need somewhere to store them all. Would it best to get a USB flash drive or an external hard drive for this purpose?

I won't need to carry anything around, I purely need something for storage.

First off, you'll want to make sure whatever device you purchase has W98SE drivers, not all of them do. Personally, I'd buy the USB external hard disk, because with the new system, it'll be very useful for a backup device.

Speaking of backup, you do realize that if something were to erase that disk, or the disk were to fail, you'd lose everything there. See my signature line.

A:Flash drive connected to USB hub; where is drive located?

I found one method that works. Since acquiring my computer I've not bothered with the large SSD slot on side of flatscreen all-in-one monitor. I got thinking, I have a Bell micro-sd adapter, I wondered what would occur if I slipped the chip out of my thumbdrive adapter [which connects via a USB port/hub] put it in the larger adapter & then slid that into the SSD slot on the computer. PRESTO! The system automatically recognized it & opened it as a media device under :F drive. This may be the only way I can do photo & video stuff from my micro-SD memory card from here on out. But, I still think it doesn't explain WHY I can't do it the other way by using the thumb drive adapter that plugs into the USB. The computer should open up the flash drive...or if I had my Duracell memory stick inserted, the computer should recognize something is in the USB port & open that...but it's not. So, still in need of some answers. But for the interim I've found a satisfactory alternative.

Had to reinstall XP on my wifes HP desktop. All went well except when you click on my computer.  C: drive is ok but D: drive (internal) shows up as a flash or jump drive. Plus it wants to scan D everytime windows boots up.  I did not format the drive before the reinstall, just replaced the copy of Windows on c.  Its a single sata drive the I partictioned the last time I changed out the hard drive.

A:Internal drive showing up as a flash drive

This is a desktop with two internal SATA drives? What is the model number of the HP?

I just got a new/used Acer Aspire One laptop. The OS on the Acer and my home computer (a Gateway laptop) is Win 7 Home 32 bit. A Cruzer 4gb USB flash drive came with the Acer laptop.
The USB flash drive has been split up. 3.73gb's is on the original (drive letter G) and 97meg's is on a virtual drive (drive letter F). According to Win 7 computer management. The virtual drive on the USB stick is locked. Every attempt to dump the virtual drive and make the hole USB flash drive 4gb's with 1 drive letter have hit a dead end. I can reformat the 3.73gb on the original drive letter G but the virtual drive F remains read only. And I don't need the prog stored there anyways.

It has no problem if I used a usb1.1 flash drive. However, when I tried a usb2.0 flash drive, there is no drive letter appearing in Windows Explorer.

I am running XP Pro with SP1. My colleague has a PC with the same hardware configuration and I had no problem plugging the usb2.0 flash drive in his machine.

Device manager did show the usb2.0 flash drive when I plugged it in the usb port.

Any idea?

A:XP Pro SP1 won't assign a drive letter to usb 2.0 flash drive

For grins can you try changing the drive letter in device manager while it's plugged into a USB 2.0 port?

My flash drive has worked many times, but now is being recognized under drive E. It will ask me to insert a disk into the drive. How do I recovery my documents on this flash drive?

Thank you in advance!

A:Flash drive asking to insert disk into drive E

First verify you are not starting the computer with the flash drive inserted. PC may be trying to boot from disk depending on BIOS settings.

Depending on your OS (not mentioned in your post) with flash drive inserted.
Click Start -> My computer -> Computer management -> disk management. Right Click on removable drive partition and change the drive letter to something else ( Not X).

Unfortunately Its most likely your flash drive has failed. They do that.

I was just thinking the other day it'd be nice to not have my drives start from c:\ but rather from a:\
Some older apps i work with (why i don't know) require any a:\ drive to load bootable files etc and having a flash as a:\ (even for ReadyBoost) would be kinda usefull!

if anyone can suggest how i could do this (windows partition manager only allows you to start with c:\ even if you have the controller disabled...)

Thanks!

I have a Sandisk Cruzer USB flash drive, and a Sea Gate external hard drive. Whenever I plug either one into my computer, it makes the sound to notify me that it has been dected and shows up under "Devices and printers" but doesn't show up under my computer. Is there anyway to fix this?

A:Flash Drive/Hard Drive Issues.

Have you looked in Disk Management after plugging one in? Right-click Computer, click Manage. If the drive shows there it may need a drive letter assigned [right-click menu] before Windows Explorer [File Explorer on Win8] can see it.

I have 2 Cd's in my system; one is a burner that is currently not working. When it worked it was drive E. When I plug in my new flash drive it is seen as E but quits working and drops off the system within a minute or two. I'm thinking I need to change something somewhere until I get my CD-R working again but am not sure where to do that. If it makes any difference, my CD player is drive D and I am running XP Home.

A buddy of mine and I were talking about performance and the future of storage device when we started wondering why Flash drives aren t used as hard drives NV-RAM is dependable why isn t it finding its way into every PC to replace drive question... hard drive Flash the magnetic platter approach We aren t electronic engineers Flash drive hard drive question... of course but we can only imagine it comes from the cost of putting a gig flash drive into a PC but if the device can take up the space of a quot HD would cost still be such a problem Our other thought was heat but if a RPM drive doesn t overheat why would a flash drive Any input is of course appreciated hope noone loses sleep on this Or maybe someone knows the answer already PS I do Flash drive hard drive question... remember hearing Samsung is going to start production of a very lare thumb drive gig I think so this just adds to the problem if the little keychain can hold gigs why isn t there a flash hard drive nbsp

Hi I've got a Win RT Install running and my only problem is that it doesn't see flash drives as drives to install the OS on to I can see the USB drives for loading a driver so the installer already sees the USB drive but it won't list it for selecting a destination for the OS So I'm not sure I even need a driver and some RT setting needs to be set for it to see flash drives for Win OS installs to. USB Hard Drive drive to Flash install as The install only sees USB Flash Drive as Hard drive to install to. IDE or SATA Drives and will let you load a driver from a flash drive but not let you install the OS onto it Also I'm already installing from another GB USB drive The SSD drive went south on this Dell Netbook and I'm gonna USB Flash Drive as Hard drive to install to. try and run USB Flash Drive as Hard drive to install to. Win off a USB drive I've got a GB USB drive with a bootable RT WIn Bit image and I'm only as far as the select drive to install and it doesn't list the USB drive I can browse to select a driver and the GB USB Drive is there Bill

A:USB Flash Drive as Hard drive to install to.

To run a Win7 from a flash drive, you need a Win7 Enterprise edition (because of the product key activation problems).

You can, however, install Win8 on a flash drive because there are currently no activation problems. Windows 8 To Go - Setup on a USB Flash Drive or USB Disk

You should know though that a really fast USB3 flash drive is required to make that a pleasant experience. On a USB2 drive it will work like molasses and you will soon be fed up (I have tried it).

Consider that for the price of a fast 32GB USB3 flash drive you can buy a 60GB SSD which you can also attach via USB3 or eSata and that might be a better deal.

Recovery drive won't allow me to use my 8 gb flash drive. It doesn't even recognize it. It will only recognize it when i uncheck the "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive. I'm assuming this is because unchecked needs 512mb and checked needs 8gb, but like I said I am using an 8gb flashdrive. Could it be because the full 8gb isn't available on the drive (only 7.45 gb is allocated) If so, can I make my flashdrive use its full 8gb? I've posted pictures below just in case you need more of an idea about what I'm talking about.

A:Recovery Drive Not Recognizing Flash Drive

You need a larger drive.

Now I'm Outta Here answered 9 months ago: My 8gb usb only shows as 7.45 gb? - Yahoo Answers

that's the way it works

true 8GB will be equal to 8,589,934,592 bytes
- that number comes from 1,024 x 1,024 x 1,024 x 8

but the storage industry decided to start ripping us off along time ago and changed the 1,024 down to 1,000
thus the new formula is 1,000 x 1,000 x 1,000 x 8 = 8,000,000,000 bytes

which after windows converts back to real GB you get aprox. 7.45GB

I am using Compaq Presario SR1520NX.

My O is drive taken by Network drive whever I login and use wd2go.com and usb flash drive can't be used.

But when I disconnect from O network drive, by re-booting the p.c. and then plugin usb it shows up as O drive.

My question is can I re-assign my usb flash drive to a different letter so both
usb and network drive can be used ?

If so, what should I do ?

Thanks.

A:O drive taken by Network drive and flash drive can't be used

With the USB drive connected open Disk Management

Right Click on the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths

You should then be able to assign the drive a letter that is not in use.

We have IE Say a user goes to MSN com The ad on the right is a Flash object Some of our users will see that object flickering when scrolling up or down on the page or when hovering their mouse over it It's quite annoying Almost all users are running Adobe Flash Player but I think I've seen this happen on systems with Macromedia Flash Player as well Other systems don't have the problem I've seen this happen on one system and not another while both seemed to have the same Flash objects installed Uninstalling all Flash players using Adobe's prescribed Flash Player uninstall tool seems to work at first but users later complain again Note that they just about always end up installing Flash Player again because sites ask for it I don't believe I've seen Adobe Object 9.0.28.0) Flash V. Player (shockwave 9 Using Flash R28 Ie Flickering Flash - Objects - Activex 6 this on any XP systems at all including my own but most of our users have Ie 6 - Flash Objects Flickering - Using Adobe Flash Player 9 Activex R28 (shockwave Flash Object V. 9.0.28.0) Win K Does anybody know why this happens or how to permanently fix it Thanks Hotshot

A:Ie 6 - Flash Objects Flickering - Using Adobe Flash Player 9 Activex R28 (shockwave Flash Object V. 9.0.28.0)

More info: Adobe Flash Player 9, Macromedia Flash Player 8, and Macromedia Flash Player 10 all produce the same result--Flash objects that flicker when you put your mouse over any part of them. Moving Flash objects will flicker constantly while moving and stop flickering when the animation is done. SWF files (at least the one at www.stormwerks.com/linked/stuf/AYB2.swf) work without a problem when using Adobe Flash Player 9.

If I don't have Adobe Flash Player 9 installed, the Win2K machines prompt me to install them for almost any site that uses Flash (I guess most recent Flash objects cannot be viewed with the older Macromedia Flash Players).

Any suggestions?
