Preferred Solution: Task Manager and other installed programs aren't working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I m trying to blame Easy Cleaner for this I made a registry backup and Easy Cleaner made a backup itself before I told it to clean my registry It scanned and removed a lot of registry entries The number was staggering I rebooted later and suddenly noticed that my logon had changed Instead of the Windows XP style You know display of names to the right click one enter password etc I was back to the old Windows gray floating box with username and password entries I didn t like it So I went in and used my registry backup restarted and it was still the gray floating box I went in and used Easy Cleaner s backup and still the gray floating box So I got miffed and tried to go uninstall Easy Cleaner And I Device Add/Remove Programs and aren't working... Manager couldn t access my Add Remove Programs But naturally I could Add/Remove Programs and Device Manager aren't working... still access it through Easy Cleaner itself so I used Easy Cleaner to uninstall itself gt gt So for about a week now I have been unable to get to Add Remove Add/Remove Programs and Device Manager aren't working... Programs and I just today found out that the Device Manager under My Computer - Properties isn t working either The same thing happens with them both The computer is busy for a second like it s trying to load them And then nothing opens nbsp

A:Add/Remove Programs and Device Manager aren't working...

And yes, I tried just re-enabling the welcome screen, it doesn't work. Welcome Screen is enabled, Fast User Switching is enabled - I still get windows classic logon. And sorry for the double post but this was three pages back and I really need help...

I installed DirectX 9.0b along with Unreal Tournament 2004. Now Task Manager is not working right. If I clt-alt-del I get only one window showing users logged on, instead of the window with a couple of tabs with applicatins running, processes running & performance. I tried doing a re-install of DirectX 9.0b but still not getting full function of task manager. Does anyone know how I can recover full use of Task Manager?

Windows XP Media Center Edition. HP 876x, P4 2.4 ghz, 512 MB RAM.

Hi everyone,

I'm currently having major issues with my windows 8.1 laptop. After windows did some auto updates yesterday I can no longer open many of my programs, task manager will not open and anything 'system related' doesn't work (can't download anti virus or refresh/reformat windows), the window freezes when i try to go into specific parts of the user accounts menu (it seems to be related to actions requiring administrative privileges, and I definitely have admin status)

When i try to open one of the programs that doesnt work nothing happens for around 3 minutes then I get this: 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item'

Browser is working completely fine and some programs work fine including Skype.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at my wits end here!

Thanks

I'm trying to download Microsoft Home & Student 2010 onto my HP Laptop. It gets halfway through the installation & then says that it can't finish because it found another version of Microsoft already on my computer. I checked my computer, but it doesn't have any Microsoft listed as being installed on my computer. How can I uninstall it, if it's not listed under the installed programs list?!?!

Hi, this is my first post and im not sure if this is the right forum for my problem.
So I have this 6 year old laptop, I recently did a clean windows XP reinstall for it. After installing Internet, Graphics and Audio drivers, some programs still don't work. They either have graphics problems or they crash at start. Some don't even start up, although they are in the processes list in task manager
They work perfectly in my other computer also running XP.

Why don't they work with this one?

If you need any additional details then just ask, but also tell me how to find them.

I am running a legitimate copy of Windows 8.
After I rebooted my laptop 3 days ago, when I open a program, it would take 3-5 minutes to load or it loads right away and once I click on the program it freezes and stops responding.
I have already ran virus scans, used CCleaner, AdwCleaner, MalwareBytes StartUpLite, ran hardware diagnostics and nothing works.
I ran my computer in safemode and all my programs came up and loaded fast.
By loaded I mean to be able to visually see it(GUI).
When I open something it'll be active in task manager but take forever to show up on my desktop.
This has been happening for 3 days, please help.

A:Programs aren't working correctly.

I would post in malware/virus removal just to make sure.

I had this same problem happen in January and was given awesome advice to fix with command prompt, but I cant find it because it was closed. It would not go online wirelessly (still dont) so I did a system restore, now it wont undo system retore, or bring up windows update or many other programs. I was trying to find the command prompt details that we're given to me 2 months ago with no luck. I am running windows 7 home premium.

A:did system restore and now certain programs aren''t working

Go to Start/Search and type CMD right click the CMD icon in the results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type chkdsk /F and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes and restart your computer. Check Disk will run at next bootup and check any files.
Also in the Elevated Command prompt you can type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing files.
If you still can't connect wirelessly, go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc Right click devmgmt icon and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager, are there any devices with yellow flags? If so, these devices need drivers installed.
What is the make and model # of your computer? On an internet computer, go to the Manufacturers support/download drivers site. Type in your make and model # and download the Chipset and WiFi network adapter driver and any other drivers you need from the Device Manager.

I am on Dell Optiplex 780 running Windows 7 Professional. I recently obtained this computer from a family member. However, they could not remember the log in for it (when you first turn it on you go through ctrl-alt-del then are prompted to enter password).

I tried Ophcrack, it said it was not able to crack any passwords.

I also tried Offline NT Password & Registry Editor. This did not work either. I had a little bit of trouble with it- the username listed in the welcome screen was not one of those listed when I ran the tool. So, if someone is familiar enough with it maybe they can help me figure out what I am doing wrong? If not, some other way for me to recover or reset my password?

Thank you in advance for your help.

A:Forgot pw- recovery/reset programs aren't working (Windows 7 Professional)

Use Offline NT Password & Registry Editor to enable the Hidden Administrator Account. Once that is enabled you can change the password of the the other accounts using the Administrator Account.

I saw this for the first time today. At first I panicked and thought I had a virus, but now I figure this is probably due to that recent massive security upgrade MS sent out on Wednesday. Some of my programs have a *32 just to the right of them. I'm going to guess that it's to distinguish 32-bit programs.

Am I right, close, or completely off the mark?

A:*32 by some programs in Task Manager

They've always been there. It isn't dues to any new update. Yes, those are 32 bit programs, as you correctly guessed.

I have windows 98se on a 4 year old computer. A few days ago the computer started acting very strange. I am connected to internet with Road Runner.

When I boot up, 'explorer' used to always come in task manager. Now it does not. But I have new items in there I can't kill - pib, tbps, wsup, wtoolsa. I tried to delete them but cannot. Went into msconfig and unchecked the boxes, but they still come back on boot up (they are always running). Sometime lexplore and rundll32 will also appear.

The big problem is that the system is now very unstable - freezing up. Keep getting the 'low resources' and 'lost internet connection' messages which I never got before.

I have run norton win doctor, adaware, and virus scans - nothing has helped.

What should I do next ?

I am fairly certain that I have a virus or some such nonsense. Unfortunately, Adaware is one of the programs that won't open. I haven't tried to open everything but not being able to access task manager is wrong enough.
Since this has started I have restarted a few times and downloaded Sophos antivirus which found some things but the problem is still there. I ran hijack this and will post the log if you like. Thanks!

I have recently been having trouble with a few programs freezing very regularly particularly iTunes - when this happens I cannot Task cannot programs... Manager end quickly use the task manager to end the task - it takes several minutes for the task to be ended In the meanwhile it often locks up other programs while it is frozen for instance Opera and sometimes Thunderbird freeze usually after a minute or so of iTunes being frozen As quite a lot of my time is spent listening to music and browsing the web and this happens a few times a day - this is VERY irritating On one or two occasions the entire system has frozen but this is quite rare On one such Task Manager cannot quickly end programs... occasion a lot of data was corrupted which was obviously not that great Essentially can anyone help me fix this problem preferably by someone finding a way to stop iTunes from crashing it's version for Windows - the usual issue is that it stops playing a song and freezes after waiting for a minute or so it'll start again but if it's just starting a song or any buttons are pressed in the program it freezes proper - however I think that just finding a way to get Windows to neatly stop the processes would be good enough This seems to be more of a software problem rather than Windows XP - but well nowhere else to put it as far as I can see Also an unrelated query what can I do if I get BSODs caused by Task Manager cannot quickly end programs... an unknown driver conflict Is there some application I can download which can determine automatically which one is conflicting or faulty I'm using Windows XP Home I can't recall the SP but it's probably SP

In Windows Xp, I sometimes have the problem that I'll start up a game (the current example I'm thinking of is Red Orchestra) and it won't load up but the executable will still be running (thus giving me the problem that I can't just attempt to run it again, because it will tell me that it is already running). The problem more than anything else is that when I try to end the process in task manager, it will ask me if I am sure, I'll click yes, and then the executable will still remain undeterred and it will still indicate to me that the program can't run two processes of the same program at the same time. So what can I do about processes that refuse to end?

Thank you very much in advance!

A:I can't close programs in task manager

You problem is not so much as how to close it, but rather to find why it's handing and not closing properly. Windows XP has an excellent feature named the Event Viewer which has logs for everything that happens on the machine. If you can find an Error at the time of the failed shutdown, we should be able to find the resolution:

To open the Event Viewer:
Start> Run> cmd> type in eventvwr
Do this on each the System and the Applications logs:
Click to open the log> look for the Error> right click on the Error> Properties> Click on Copy button, top right, below the down arrow and Paste here (Ctrl V)

You will likely see Error #1002 for Application hang or #1000 for Application Error

Please ignore Warnings If you have a recurring Error with same ID#, same Source and same Description, only one copy is needed. You don't need to include the lines of code in the box below the Description, if any.

Maybe restart Explorer.exe.

Start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

Hi there,

I'm in a situation right now but I think I can handle it -- if not I will be posting here more often lol. Title of this thread tells you the only question I need answering right now -- can I run 'add/remove programs' using only the task manager, not the start menu? Does anyone know, and if so, what is the file I should run?

Many thanks for taking the time to read.

Occasionally the program I am using freezes. And I find that if I look in task manager, under applications, there are two instances of the program. For example I am scanning with avast, and it stops, then in the applications there are two avast free antivirus. When I right click and "go to process" one is AvastSvc.exe and the other is explorer.exe. Is this ok? And can I "end task" on one of them to get the correct one to run? Thanks for any answer.

As of three days ago, my fairly new pc (4 months old) is suddenly behaving strangely. When I start from a cold boot everything at first works just fine. But after roughly an hour the following symptoms pop up:Many of the programs will no longer respondThe browser doesn't fully freeze, but you can't load any new web pagesNo new programs not already running can be run - when you select a program, the cursor goes to an hourglass for a few seconds, but then hangsThe Task Manager can no longer be loaded (it can prior to this time, but after about an hour, you can no longer launch itYou can't fully shut down - programs may close, but ultimately, the shutdown process hangsI've attached the logs from OTL and Hijack this utilities. I'm using Symantec Endpoint Protection as my virus software (version 11.0.4202.75)Looking forward to see what can be determined from this.Ybsorcc

Greetings.

I have an older model computer running Windows XP. It has been slowing down progressively over the last few months. Part of the problem, particularly on start-up, is that there are an inordinate number of programs running in the background. At least that is what I see when I look at the Task Manager. McAfee seems to have 4 or 5 programs running all the time. With the memory filling up, it seems it takes a lot for XP to get things ready before usage.

What can be done to reduce the number of programs running? How do I know if they are needed or not? Are they other ways to improve the performance, like by increasing the RAM? Would putting photos & videos on an external drive to free up some of the memory help reduce the load?

Thanks.

Lately I have been noticing a program in my task manager that I have no idea what it is for. If I end it, nothing happens. It is usually under the name DSD_3300, but most recently it is DSD_3728. I will attach a screen shot so it can be seen. Their icons within the task manager have been the same, any ideas what it is?

Hi I ve been running into about the same issue lately When I boot my computer everything s fine for Not other Do Task programs manager and Open a couple Task manager and other programs Do Not Open of hours but suddenly I begin to receive all sorts of weird messages It usually begins with my network drives not being available anymore and Windows saying I don t have enough resources to access them When I try to run task manager I get the same error as Francisco xc d I also get the messages about quota invalid dlls not ole though and the quot not enough system resources quot Sometimes I manage to close an app or two and I can get access to the task manager but it shows that roughly of my RAM is still available and the CPU is idle It seems like if Windows is suddenly not able to access the memory or disk properly and system runs out of resources The funny part is that all those problems were happening on my previous computer and I thought the old hardware or a clogged Windows installation was the culprit But since I installed a fresh copy of Windows on brand new hardware and the problem shows up again On the new machine I did all the updates SP and every other fixes and I m thinking since this problem appeared recently could a recent update from Microsoft cause all the trouble Other than that I installed pretty much the same softwares that were on my previous computer Programs that I use on a daily basis include Avira Outlook Chrome Dreamweaver CS and Winamp doing web development while listening to some music The whole behaviour and the delay before everything crashes are quite inconsistent I ve searched a bit on google and I found several people having the same issue some back in and others more recently but no solution have been found so far Everybody is posting hijackthis and anti-malware logs but it doesn t seem like a virus problem If someone has a clue on that one please share your ideas Thanks for any help

Hello, I had to split you to your own topoc. This is always best and that one was being moved to the appropriate forum.I feel this may not be malware but lt'set a log while you are here. Please run TFC by OTPlease download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop. alternate download linkSave any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser! Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator. Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion. Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.Troubleshoot Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

A:Problems with unknown programs in Task Manager.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\prutpct.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\prutpct.exe
C:\Program Files\CxtPls\CxtPls.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

CxtPls
CSBB
MyWay

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

A:Task Manager/other programs will not open unless ran as admin

Possibly some programs are conflicting.
Try a clean startup Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
If it fails, try uninstalling AV and then firewall (less likely) one at a time

Ok, so this is an ONGOING problem. Whenever this happens, I have to force-shutdown the PC before being able to do anything again.
I will randomly try to open a program (example, iTunes), and it won't open. then trying any program, the programs will not open. Any program running will not work properly (going on Chrome, the sit itself and subsets in the URL will work, but it won't go to any other site). Task manager, no matter how I try to open it, WILL NOT OPEN.
I try to reset via the start menu. Start menu doesn't open.
Ctl+alt+del to the menu, press reset... It will say "restarting" and never restart. I have to hold the power button just to get it to shut off. And this happens nearly intermittently, it's the only way I shut off my computer now. It's frustrating beyond belief! Can somebody help?

There are 4 copies of jrun.exe and 4 copies of jrunsvc.exe running in my processes tab in task manager. I dont think there should be that many running. I think it might have been downloaded 4 different times from different apps. Any idea why this is? Should that many be running? Should I end the process or maybe remove all but 1? Thanks.
I just checked my system configuration. It shows these progs using them.......

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click Edit > Select All> Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.

I've noticed my computer running a little slower than normal & seemed like the computer was running something all the time. When I check Windows Task Manager there are numerous (20+) .exe programs running:
conhost.exe
cmd.exe
schtask.exe

Is this a virus?
using Windows 7
64 bit

I would appreciate any help,

Thanks,

Whenever I start Windows 10, early on in the boot cycle I get a Firefox Window. As the system continues to initialize the Firefox window slowly come to life, though sometimes not fully.

I've checked all the obvious places, Task Manager, c;\users\user_name\AppData\Roaming

I must have put this in for some reason but can't think of why / how.

I want to get rid of it.
How to do so?

Hi.
There are a couple of ways to look for these things. Try opening Task Manager and look in the Startup Tab. If you don't find what you're looking for, sometimes it's a task that you can find easily in Ccleaner free. Also, it sounds like Forefox may need to be reset.

A:programs run in task manager but invisible on monitor

I have seen this issue, but it is always associated with older software that was written before hyperthreading and multi core processors were invented, when you try to launch one of these older programs on a hyperthreading or core 2 processor, it does launch in task manager but no GUI will show up, I have found that by launching a large program that does work, then quickly launching the other program while the first is still trying to open, will allow the problem program to open and show up.

Not sure if this is your problem or not.
strange, I know of no fix, it is a problem in the code of the program itself.

Hey guys, looks like I'm getting caught in this Spanish virus.. my laptop's been hit by this virus nearly a month ago, actually this is my second time encountering it, and it got me again thanks to my absent mindedness... it came from my flash disk.. what should I do? I've attempted to access a few anti-malware sites (like www.malwarebytes.org) but once I've entered that site, my browser will automatically close down? Please help me! What should I do? Reformatting is not an option as it'll infect every single flash disk that I insert in it and I've got a lot of important stuffs in it!

Currently using my old desktop to post here, here's my laptop's specs

Intel Centrino 2 P8700 2.51Ghz
Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT 256MB
500GB HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium (genuine)
4GB DDR2 800Mhz (around that, not too sure)

Thanks!

A:Virus that's blocking my cmd, task manager, and many programs!

Hi, download Malwarebytes on a different computer, but BEFORE saving the file, rename it to abcd.exe. Then save it onto a flash drive, or other removable media to transfer it to the infected computer. Now simply double click abcd.exe and install malwarebytes. Once installed, UPDATE the program, and run a quick scan.Post the log in your next reply.

I have a Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi1. This morning i turned it on and it took an abnormal amount of time to boot up. I am unable to access any of the "system maintanance" progams (Control Panel, Task Manager etc). Other software programs will open, but then instantly start "Not Responding". The laptop gets stuck on "Logging Off" when attempt to shutdown or restart. I am unable to run my virus software. I tried to run Defrag and Disk Cleanup, neither will run. I am not the smartest person when it comes to computers, so any help anyone can offer will be geatly appreciated.

I am unable to connect to the internet for some reason too. Right Clicking on computer icon on bottom bar and clicking "Connect to a Network" freezes my computer.

About two weeks ago, my computer would not bring up any of the programs I had running after I had opened it once.

For example, I would open firefox, and exit it by clicking the "X" in the top right corner. Later, I would click the firefox icon again to bring up the browser. However, The task manager added another firefox to the process list, but no firefox application was opened.

I can run everything right when I start the computer, but even when I haven't opened certain programs for a first time, it still won't let me run them.

I have already removed Malware and performed a clean boot.

thanks!

Windows bit on a Dell Inspiron Not a major problem -- more of a minor irritation and an quot I wonder if anyone else has struck this quot Whenever installing a program lately can't remember how long -- I've been ignoring it for a while Windows doesn't respond when I click the exe installer file But as soon as I hit Ctrl - Alt - Del and open the Task Manager Windows suddenly wakes up and installs the Programs don't install I open Manager Task until program without a hitch Programs don't install until I open Task Manager I don't have to do anything in Task Manager simply opening it is enough Also the computer hasn't crashed in this state If I want to open another already-installed program and use it I can without any problems It's just that it completely ignores my command to run the exe file until Programs don't install until I open Task Manager I threaten it with Task Manager The first couple of times before Programs don't install until I open Task Manager I thought of opening Task Manager I'd double click the exe file several thousand times as you do wondering why it wasn't doing anything Then when I opened the Task Manager it'd try to install the program several thousand times Now I know to simply double click the exe file then hit Ctrl - Alt - Del and voila the program is installed What I want to know is why doesn't Windows install the program in the first place FYI the programs I was having trouble with were from memory Dropbox Skype memoQ translation memory software and a few others I can't remember I doubt that the programs were the problem though I'm pretty sure this is a Windows problem

My Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 7 was working fine until yesterday evening.

When I turn it on, it loads the Log In screen and I am able to type in my password and log in. However, after that I am presented with a black screen and a white cursor. It will not let me open Task Manager and when I press alt, ctrl and delete, after a few minutes I get this error message "Failure to display security and shut down options".

I have tried System Restore but had no luck with that.

I am not able to run in Safe Mode either, it constantly freezes.

My laptop did not come with a Windows 7 operating CD.

A:Black screen after log in, unable to run Task Manager or any programs

Hello em1992,If both normal and safe mode booting are not working, you could try Last Known Good Configuration from the Advanced Boot Options Menu.If that doesn't work, my suggestion would be to post in the Bleeping Computer's Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs Forum for two reasons. First, it would be a good idea to rule out malware as a cause and second, they have the tools and know how to help you get a non-booting system up and running.

I am trying to use a n eMachines W3653 tower with 512 Mb ram running windows Vista home premium. It runs very slowly and double clicking icons do not always start the program. Task manager showed it there in processes running but no applications running. It was using 0% of cpu time with an occasional flash of 5%. Cpu was running about 7 to 15% and no other programs. I have attached 2 screen shots of task manager. #2 is different because paint is running. I know it should have more memory to run well but this seems an excessive number of copies are using up ram while no applications are running. What is going on?

A:[SOLVED] Multipul copies of programs in task manager

Hi if you want it to run well you need around 2 gb of ram you have noted you realise this and you have quite a few processes which access memory and internet which is probably what is using up what ram you have

Hello, Welcome to TSF.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

Let see if we can get this computer started.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

rkill.exe
rkill.com
rkill.scr

If unable to download these tools from the problem computer use a good machine. Download the files to a flash Driver of CD and copy the file on the desktop of the infected computer.
Run it from there.
===

Post the results of this scan in your next post if you can.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post.

So my Task Manager not closing programs, explorer is not responding I am getting stuck on log of screen, Computer Management gets stuck of "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service" and a number of other programs are crashing and not restarting. I don't get much time on my computer until it goes into this state. All these problems seem to come on at once. It started few weeks ago and I am not sure what I could have done that started this.

Hi guys,

I have a problem since i downloaded a file which i don't think if was a trojan, virus nor not because my norton 360 was not able to detect it..
After two days i notice that i could not anymore open an executable file like COREL DRAW, LIMEWIRE, YAHOO MESSENGER, and other. I've tried to restore my computer but my system restore was turned off. I've tried to turn it on but it seems it was disabled.. Another one is my task manager. When i press ctrl del it says "YOUR TASK MANAGER HAS BEEN DISABLED BY YOUR ADMINISTRATOR". Well i know that i haven't been do it before.. I am wondering if i am infected with a virus.. Would anyone help me..

A:Can't do the system restore.. task manager was disabled.. cannot run programs.

Howdy,

It may have a hidden recovery partition that may set the PC back to when you bought it but you will loose all data and updates if it has one and works. on start up try Ctrl + F11

IF YOU HAVE IMPORTANT DATA THEN TAKE THE HARD DRIVE OUT FIRST AND BACKUP THE DATA ON ANOTHER PC.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.alternate download linkNote: The file will be randomly named (i.e. 5mkuvc4z.exe).Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on the randomly named file to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current versionRead the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders). If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window. If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media. In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo. Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete. When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable. In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot. After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Hello and welcome to TSF

Do you happen to have any other computer you could download files to and then move them over the computer you are having issues with via a cd or flash drive?

From safe mode with networking, can you download these files:
http://www.gmer.net/download.php
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com

I do not want for you to run them yet, please just let me know if you are able to download the files either directly to the computer or by possibly using another computer.

Also, do you know if your computer is a 64 bit system?

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

I recently have encountered a problem with my laptop. Everytime i boot it up and try to load a program it doesnt load and i get the error message "Failure to display security and shut down options" when pressing ctrl+alt+delete to access the options. I have also tried pressing ctrl+shift+esc to access the task manager directly but no luck. I uninstalled google chrome as I tried system restore and it said it was not restored due to a google update file. THere is no web broswer installed at the moment, and any attempts to install or run a program are met with the computer freezing and not responding. Any help would be grealty appreciated as i dont want to fresh install windows onto this computer and lose all settings and configurations for the programs and such.

It seems as if some things do need Internet Explorer even though there's no direct mention of that. Before doing a System Restore to a date before the problem or a Factory Restore [loses everything] I'd go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and turn Internet Explorer back on in "Turn Windows features on or off". I'd like to be rid of IE but a number of the Microsoft sites I access require it.

There was a time I used Windows regularly, but I mostly work on Apple devces now. Our teenage son is the main Windows user, so I don't know quite how long this has been going on or what things changed before it started. But the computer is having weird problems.

The main symptom is that programs freeze. Not just one program, not the same thing every time. Sometimes Task Manager will let us quit the frozen process, but sometimes it won't. Sometimes, the Start Menu crashes. Sometimes it works fine for a while after a reboot, and sometimes it freezes on reboot.

SuperAntiSpyware and McAfee scans come up clean.

Before packing it up and taking it to guys in polo shirts in really big store, I thought I'd ask for help here. Thanks.

So we fixed this one our own: Those two executables were friends of Widgi Toolbar. I guess my dad, upon update of Iobit Security 360, downloaded their toolbar which is distributed by Widgi. So Iobit is basically using their "name" as a security provider to shill spyware. Disgusting. After removing the toolbar, I have instructed him to uninstall all Iobit programs (Security 360 and Advanced Systemcare) from his computer, clearly they can't be trusted anymore.

Let's try another malware scannerPlease download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.34) and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/

Hey,

I have recently had a major issue concerning my computer HP and Windows XP Home Edition. I am not sure whether it is a virus or just a windows issue. I cannot run task manager, regedit, run and I have some difficulties opening executible programs .exe. I have CA Internet Security Suite 2007 installed and ran a spyware/virus check. It came up with Disable Task Manager Reg Entry as spyware. I tried to download various recommended virus removers such as SpyBot S+D but I have troubles opening them-I try running the program but will not work. I also tried to uninstall/reinstall CA Antivirus-this was unsuccessful "you do not have sufficient priviliges to install or uninstall Ca Personal Firewall. I would really appreciate any help at all as I am not a computer expert/extremely savvy.

Thanks so much in advance,

Michael

This one is kind of tough to describe, but basically, for a few weeks now, when I'm online I will all of a sudden go to load a new page in Firefox and the bar at the bottom will show that it has gone through all the page loading and then say, "done", but the page remains blank. Refreshing numerous times only sometimes helps. Additionally, all of my shortcuts cease functioning (ie. trying to open IE7), the Start menu will only open to one level of the tree, and Ctrl+Alt+Del only produces the "there is an illegal something going on and I'm not going to open for you" sound. The shutdown button doesn't work, so the only way for me to rectify it is to hold down the power button and then restart.

Virus scans, spyware scans, registry scans all come up clean. OS is XP SP2.

Thank you, I appreciate any help!

A:Many problems, including unable to open task manager/new programs

That's a hell of a lot of problems.

Do you still have your windows xp installation CD?

If so, you have two options:

Start Menu > Run > type in: sfc /scannow

Or

Do a repair installation of windows XP (your files will be fine)

I have an IBM Thinkpad that is running Windows XP version 2002 service pack 3. It started running very poorly some time ago, and I am already aware that this is somewhat due to the number of processes that are set to run on start-up. I need to clean that up, but don't want to mess anything up. But I have noticed a pattern when the computer is running at its worst. There seem to be two different processes that are always running in the task manager. The first is ctfmon.exe and the other is rundll32.exe I end each of these processes, but they always pop back up pretty quickly. So I downloaded hijack this and ran a scan. I have attached the log to this post. I don't have any clue what to do from here, but could really use some advice. All help is much appreciated.

What I have done to try and fix the problem

Installed AVIRA Antivirus
AVG Anti virus

I have used all these softwares, run full scans. In total they must of found in between 400-500 spyware and antivirus.

They have all been quarantined and deleted. Yet problem still remains!

Hi,

I got a virus yesterday off a dodgy website, in task manager it showed that i had 2 rundll programs open, note pad and a couple of internet explorer pages, i kept trying to close them but i couldn't.

Anyway i scanned using Avast and it said there was no virus etc but i restored my laptop to a couple of days ago.

Now i can't open task manager properly or install a MBAM and the screen is a bit dodgy as well, text boxes in internet dont open properly and text is a bit funny. I can't open these in safe mode either or system restore.

I couldn't even sign up to these forum on my laptop - i couldnt see what i was typing in the text box.

I've attached a screenshot of task manager and when i try to open the MBAM installer.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A:Programs not opening properly e.g Task Manager (even in safe mode)

Sounds like you're still infected, and that it got into your System Restore points. Confirm if this is the case by installing Malwarebytes in Safe Mode with Networking to update and run a full scan. If this fails download Windows Defender Offline, writing to flash stick or burning to CD, booting to update and run a full scan.

If infection is found confirming your Restore points are infected, turn off System Protection and run another full scan with Malwarebytes, then Avast full scan or Boot Scan if available. System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage

Google the actual virus to see if it requires special tools for removal. Our Security forum experts can consult.

Once it's confirmed removed, run SFC -SCANNOW Command to check System file integrity.

Serious infections can sometimes require a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 following or adapting these steps to get it perfect.

A:task manager not working

Hi I resolved my own issue. I used http://hjt.networktechs.com/ to read the hijackthis logs, removed bad entries. I still had issue with task manager so I installed autoruns http://www.snapfiles.com/rhttp://hjt.netwo...s/autoruns.html which has a hijack button and low and behold there was task manager and other apps. This resolved my issues.

My task manager won't display. I thought it was a virus, but I've run several detection programs for viruses and trojans, and none detected any threats.

I have no other symptoms on my machine. When I turn on the task manager, it appears in the notification area, but doesn't show up with the task manager window itself. I can't click the icon in the notification area to any effect.

The vista help from microsoft just says that I either have a virus or the task manager is hidden, but to turn off the hidden mode I have to go into the options for the task manager... which is impossible if its hidden.

I have vista home premium 32-bit. Please help, thank you.

When I try to open Task Manager it shows the tab on the task bar (like a monitor with gree on the screen) However, when I click on it nothing happens.

It also appears on the task bar as a square green box. When I put the mouse over it it says CPU Usage: 1%

Okay fine, but when I double click that nothing happens. When I right click it it says "Close" or "Always on Top". I can't get the damn thing to work. Its been like this for almost a month.

I am running on Windows XP ... NOT service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated!
