Plastic tab on SATA drive port broke off

Q: Plastic tab on SATA drive port broke off

I'm in deep doggy-doo.

When my 2TB Sata-III drive wasn't being recognized (ported to a new build), I pulled the data cable off to check the connection and off came the little plastic tab that guides the plug onto the pins!

Without it, there is nothing to press contact between the cable & pins, let alone hold the cable firmly in place.

Worse, I can't even plug it in to rescue the data off it! I suspect I must have damaged the connection somehow when I plugged it in. The pins appear fine (within reason considering what happened.)

Gluing the tab back in place is no help if the connection still doesn't work and I need to unplug it again.

Am I screwed or is there a way around this mess (short of paying hundreds to some recovery service)?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Oh boy do I know the feeling, I once pulled off the same thing from a month old mobo, but I was able to find a replacement in a shop and soldered it back, maybe you can do the same ? Try finding a female SATA and soldering the other end of it to the HDD ?

I have 2 USB ports on my laptop and only one of them is broken. The plastic part broke off and it clearly doesn't work anymore. The other port is fully intact, but it won't recognize any thing i plug in. Is there anyway I can fix the unbroken port so that it works?

(someone else had this problem but it was not answered, that's how I found this forum)

Laptop acer 5517 - i hate those sliding 'mouse' gimme a plain old fashioned one I can handle (and slam down when something doesn't go right )

I use the usb port for a mouse and for a real keyboard - a splitter will work but neither usb will work when one is broken (i put the stupid cord in upside down and broke the little plastic black part in one of them).

This is for an Antec case, where the inner, plastic coil on-off switch has come loose. The plastic pin retaining the flat, spiral coil on a side has broke (poor design, which is surprising for this make). The marginal mini pin snapped == case front is practically trashed. And if case front is no longer available, of course all components must be moved to fit inside another new separate case.

So looking for the best glue I can find to secure it back.

I hessitate to shoot glue, since every time the switch is depressed from the outside, finger pressure will be applied.

Anyway, what would be the best high strength glue for bonding plastic-on-plastic?
Is the glue gun better?

(notice that certain glues write out certain types of plastics under their recommended applications)

A:plastic pc case switch broke - looking for best glue

It is difficult to recommend a glue for this purpose for several reasons; but, my experience with vulcanizing plastics goes back over 50 years when I was assembling plastic model cars and I learned the difference between vulcanizing glues and what I would call surface glues.

Plumbers' glue for plastic pipes vulcanizes the plastic, meaning that it melts the plastic on the opposing surfaces and bonds them together with a chemical reaction. If done properly, the glued joint can be stronger than the rest of the object.

Read the label and apply the instructions as well as can be done for such dissimilar surfaces.

I have a 2 TB Western Digital My Book 3.0. The USB Port on my hard drive broke, so I can no longer access it on my laptop or desktop via USB. Is there any other way for me to access my data? Would I have to open it up?

A:USB port on external hard drive broke. How can I access it?

Short of taking it somewhere for repair, it sounds like you're going to have to open up the case to get inside the drive. Once you've done that, you have two options:

1) If the connector is still functional you can connect it to your computer with the case removed and transfer your data, or

2) You can disconnect the bare drive from the guts in your case and connect it directly to your motherboard so that you can read the data from it.

All the other problems seem to be the other way around.

My 2 DVD writers are on the primary IDE port. Had 2 x 80GB HDD's on the 2 SATA ports. Upgraded 2nd HDD to 320GB. No problems. Decided to use left-over 80GB HDD as backup disk. Installed an adapter. Plugged into secondary IDE port on motherboard. Did CMOS changes.

Booting up has three (seemingly random) results:
1. Boots up normally
2. Boots, but takes 6 minutes from "Starting Windows" to password screen
3. Never gets past "Starting Windows". This is the most common.

When it boots up normally I can use the drive. Formatted it. Changed label. Did system image.

Anybody had any success doing this?

Later edit: Tried with PCI SATA adapter and that works 100%.

I have a sata 3.5? internal hard drive, on which I created one extended partition. In order, it contained a 1.7Gb Linux swap partition, 3 ext3 partitions for 3 linux operating systems and another ext3 partition for my data. Later I removed the first 2 linux partitions, filling their place with a new linx system. I then tried to burn a 1.7Gb iso file to my USB stick. However, it wrote the contents to that old hard drive.

I don't know if the original swap partition was bigger than the contents of the burned iso file.

I connected the drive to my Vista 32bit netbook via a usb port. The Disk Management software listed it as 'not initialzed'. Right-clicking it I tried to initialize it but it says the drive's not ready.

I bought a cable with ESATA on one end and SATA on the other end. What am I supposed to do with it? I connected a standard SATA drive to one end and the other end to the ESATA port on the back of the computer, and used an external power supply for the drive. The BIOS does not see the drive. Suspecting the drive needed to be powered from the same power supply as the computer, I plugged the drive into a normal power connector in the computer, but used the new cable to connect it to the external ESATA port. Still the BIOS sees nothing. The drive works perfectly as a SATA drive in the normal SATA connection.

A:Can I connect a SATA drive to an ESATA port?

I'm not really sure what you have done. What type external power supply did you use? Is it a new drive or a used one? When your computer is on, can you feel the drive spin up? Connect the drive and start the computer. Right click on computer in the start menu, select manage. Maximize the screen and in the left column select disk management. Look for your drive there. If it is a new drive it will have to be initialized, a partition created and formatted and a drive letter assigned. If there is data on it, right click the drive and select 'change drive letter or path' in the next screen select new, from the drop down list, choose any drive letter you want that has not already been used. If it wants to format the drive don't do it if there is data on the drive you want to save. Formatting will remove any data on the drive. Let us know more particulars and we may be able to help. You can also go to device manager,
and expand disk drives and see if it is listed there. If you need more help please post a screenshot of the entire disk management page. You can use the snipping tool or paint, then upload the file using the paperclip icon in the response box.

I have an ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX motherboard which has SATA 2 and SATA 3 ports. I've tried fiddling around with BIOS options and my hard drive is recognized by the motherboard as seen in this picture:
The computer will boot to the screen where I can select to boot into safe mode or normal boot. Regardless of which option I select, the computer will restart right after, as seen in this video:

I've tried booting the hard drive with another board and everything works fine (hard drive isn't the problem). I've also tried booting the entire system using another PSU and I get the same result as in the video linked above. I've come to the conclusion that it's the motherboard that's causing the problem and that I should RMA it. What is the community's opinion?

Now you could try to see if it is listed in DISKPART

Go to Strat type in cmd
it will open a window that requires you to Open or run as admin > run as admin > OK
you will get a window that opens in black and white type in diskpart lower case will do > hit OK / Enter
you will end up with a screen that has DISKPART in it > type in list disk > hit Enter and you will end up with a list of the drives you have connected up - see pic.

A:SATA connector broke off...

I broke off a sata connector and was able to take the drive out. I gently inserted the sata cable so that the connection was made, but way to loose (of course). So I used some duct tape and very carefully used the tape to keep the connector in. It worked until I got another drive some time later. Once you know that the connection is right, you can mix up some epoxy glue and really make a permanent connection out of it.

It either wasn't fixed right, or the charger is also damaged and needs to be replaced, or it's taking excessive physical stress.

If you accidently short out the pins in there, you could blow fuses on the motherboard, that wouldn't be good. If you give me your model number, (not the serial number), I could probably provide a video of disassembly and installation of the port.'
Depending on the model, the port is separate from the motherboard, it's attached by a cable and a plug.

In the mean time, leave this hard disk alone, do not initialize or format it when Windows offers to do so.

Does the drive have an adapter need to remove to expose the SATA conenctors? I don;t see anything about the Y480 not having a standard SATA drive and laptop and desktop SATA connectors are the same.

Maybe post pictures of both the drive and your SATA cables.

Hi all,

I hope that this thread doesn't go as long as the other one, but you never know. In my last thread, that dealt with recovering data on a bad windows 10 disk image, towards the end of it I mentioned that Windows Explorer lost recognition to one of my DVD's.

I figured that it had to be a bad mobo, so I replaced it and guess what, it still doesn't recognize the DVD. On boot up, the bios see both DVD's, but when it finally loads the system and I check Win Explorer and Disk Management, one of the DVD's isn't there.

Is there a switch or something that disables drives? Just wondering.

Hey Guys,

Boy I sure hope that this thread doesn't go as long as the other one. BUT...a problem a raised when I disconnected all drives in the last thread "System Image Problem"
After all was fixed on recovering the Image, I plugged in all SATA ports and I found that my second DVD wouldn't work, tried switching SATA cables and ports and no luck on the DVD. I took a different DVD out of wife computer, Shush, hooked it up and still no recognizing the drive.
Is this possible that this situation can happen?? Is there a way to check this port other that what I did, without buying expensive SATA port checkers? Is there a way to force the system to recognize the DVD, the BIOS says its there.

Any one with any ideas?

A:using jmicron port for sata

Just checking:

You went to the ADVANCED Tab in BIOS > Onboard Devices Configuration >
and Enabled the JMicron eSATA/PATA Controller

And changed Controller Mode to AHCI (Not necessary, but best)

And you have installed the JMicron drivers?

Have a system with a A7V8X-LA (Kelut) MoBo running WinXP.

Recently I bought a new drive (Samsung SATA 150 GB) and attempted to connect to one of the two SATA ports on the board.

The Drive was not recognized when connected to either of the two SATA ports.

I tried to connect the drive on another computer, The drive was read without a problem.

So after proving both drive and cables OK (I used the same data and power cables on the other computer) , the problem would appear to be the SATA ports on this board,

Are they physically there but inoperative? Did I miss a way to activate them in the BIOS? I could not found any way to enable them in Setup.

I am cloning an old IDE drive, to a new Sata drive.

Specifically, when connecting them simultaneously, I should set the IDE drive to master, correct?

And for the Sata II drive do I need to set the jumpers to something, or hook the drive up in a specific sata port? (I have sata ports 0 to 5, and a sata DVD Drive occupies one).

(Ignore my previous post about the procedure...)

Thanks a bunch!

A:IDE--Master, Sata II--Port?

You will not need to mess with any jumpers on the sata drive, the jumpers on sata drives are actually to force SATAI mode for old boards/enclosures that can't handle SATA II. Port doesn't matter either, if you are planning on booting from the sata in the future you need to have it set in the BIOS for that drive to boot, but its number doesn't matter.

Sata ports Sata Numbering Port are numbered on a mobo but I have alwarys had trouble relating them to Disk numbering in Windows Disk Manager I have never Sata Port Numbering seen in the bios what port a disk was connected to Which brings me to my question Has anyone ever seen this behaviour When I set up a rig with multiple disks I clean the OS disk and plug it in alone by it self Then after I have verified it will boot I will add a disk and clean it for third party apps clean means partition and format Then I may have one or two more disks with data to install that was in another rig I never cleaned those I just plugged them in I noticed that my bios was hesitating on the boot as it read the disks So I Sata Port Numbering took the data off and cleaned them Then installed them one at time each time booting letting windows install the driver and write the quot System Volume Information quot This caused a much smoother boot in the bios This makes me wonder what is in Sata Port Numbering the quot System Volume Information quot that confuses the bios Probably Disk type Disk size etc Maybe a reference to a particular port

A:Sata Port Numbering

It's most likely related to the SATA port numbering on your motherboard, and your BIOS setting for which drive to boot from first.

Make sure your boot drive is going to be in SATA port 0 (first one) as your motherboard dictates (they're all different) Then make sure you have the boot order correctly set in BIOS, ( I turn off all other boot devices and just use the boot menu on my motherboard to switch around if needed )

Hey everyone, time for a new question (it's been a problem filled day for me)

In this recent heat wave here in southern california (100-120 degrees where i live) i was having problems keeping my PC cool... I went to the point where i had to open the side and aim a fan into the case to keep it relatively cool. well after a week of doing my normal thing on the PC it froze on me, then on restart it said there was no HDD installed. I freaked out, but i unplugged the HDD and put it into another of the four SATA ports i have and it started just fine. My questions is, is it possible for a SATA port to burn out cause of the ambient heat?

A:Sata port burn out?

Yes it is possible from heat or even static electricity

I'm currently having issues with my graphics card. Please bear with me due to my lack of computer knowledge. My graphics card has two ports. Those two ports accept my SATA cables. Now I have come to realization that one of those ports are broken, and cause the computer to not start up. I need two plugged in for it to run. I had a computer repairman look at this problem. On the opposite side there are chip like ports that I believe are called PCI.
Now my problem is I don't have any wire that plugs into those. No PCI wires. Is there an adaptor or piece I can buy to convert my regular SATA to accept the PCI??? What do I do to get plugged in. If there is a piece, please link me. Thanks!

Hi, hopefully should be straight forward enough...

I have just bought one of these space saving Acer Revos which does not come with an Optical drive.

I have a Blu-ray reader (dvd writer) which is SATA, but the Revo only has USB or eSATA.
So... i was wondering what is needed to get this (SATA) drive to work via eSATA or usb?

Is it as simple as a SATA to eSATA cable or will this not give the necessary power to the drive?

Or do i need an eSATA enclosure, and if so what size for an optical drive 5.2?

Cheers for any help.

I have 2 IDE HDs installed and added SATA drive lately. SATA runs in IDE mode in CMOS. Problem is, even though SATA drive is recognized by BIOS, Disk Manager, Norton Ghost & System Works, it doesn't show in My Computer, causing problems with saving and opening files. Tried a couple of tricks (changing the drive letter, disconnecting & reconnecting the drive, reformatting etc. ) nothing seems to work. I use this SATA drive for storage and for now I have to drag the files down there manually.
I don't know if it's of any importance, but I have nVidia GeForce graphics card onboard.

I'm wanting to upgrade to a better mainboard. I don't know much about SATA, but I've been using a SATA I hard drive very successfully through a pci controller card.

My question: If I get a new motherboard with SATA II headers, will it readily accept my SATA I hard drive? I can see how the reverse might not work, that is, not being able to connect a SATA II hard drive in a SATA I header, but maybe I'm wrong on that...?

Yes, sata 3gb/s ports(commonly called sata II), are designed to be backward compatible. I'm using a sata I hd on my sata 3gb/s port on my chaintech vnf4/ultra, so yeah, it works.

I've come to the conclusion that my current controller card has gone south, thus I'm looking for a replacement. It is simple to compare cards in terms of their basic specs, but even with cards of the same specs, the prices vary widely.

Often, the higher priced cards seem to emphasize their performance, but this is something that I don't know how to evaluate. How does one choose a card for the best combination of quality and performance, without wasting money on a brand name?

A:External 2 Port SATA III Controller

Seekermeister, i have been considering one too. What I do is go to a place like Newegg and read all the reviews. It depends on what you want to do with it. I just need 2 or 3 extra ports. I don't care about raid. I've seen some that have low reviews, because they can't get top performance from raid, but if used as a single drives they work well. For me, that's all I care about. It seems if you want to run raid, a good card will cost some extra money.

Can anyone tell me what's it about?

A:BSOD after switching sata port

Hi AlexRD

do you have the intel Sata drivers ? You might want to plug the SATA cable back to the Marvell connector then enable the intel driver .

Does your BIOS say AHCI as the configuration ?

Open up regedit . Click on type REGEDIT then press ENTER click on yes if you get an UAC window .

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msachi

In the right side check if Start is 0 if its a 3 . Right click on Start click modify and enter 0 in place of the 3. Restart the computer in BIOS have the SATA configuration be AHCI . See if this helps .

That will help with speed and such. Turn off the IDE mode in the BIOS too.

Make sure your primary boot drive is plugged into port 0 or 1 (as some motherboards label it). Check your motherboard manual to see how the SATA ports are labeled.

A:Can I plug a PCI SATA Card into the PCI-E Graphics port

Physically, it will fit (the bottom slot is PCI-e, not PCI, btw). The problem is how many lanes will it support. I looked at the specs and they are ambiguous at best. You should be able to get a card to give you more SATA ports but you may not get full speed unless that slot has more than one lane. Also, make sure the card uses one lane per SATA port. There are a lot of cards that have two or more SATA ports but run off only one PCI-e lane (I'd like to shoot the eejits that design and sell those abominations). I doubt you will be able to boot off of a card (some cards allow it but require that the MOBO will support it, which they often do not).

Edit: I found the card on Newegg and their description is better than MSI's. The slot physically is x16 long but, electrically, it has only x4 lanes. That will support up to four more SATA ports as long as the card uses the same number of lanes.

This card may work for you. The most common negative review is on the difficulty of getting drivers to work. Read the reviews for tips on it. Also, you might get lucky and Win 7 will already have the driver you need (that was what happened when I installed my LSI 9211-8i).

Normally I dual boot Windows 8 and Kubuntu off a single SATA 3 SSD. However, I need to transfer data from one 3TB SATA 3 HDD to another 3TB SATA 3 HDD. So I switched out my cables moving the 3TBs to the SATA 3 ports and moving the SSD to a SATA 2 port for the time being. When booting, I get presented with BURG bootloader(think grub but icons rather then text), and I can choose Kubuntu and boot up no problem. However, when I boot Windows 8, it sits on the Win 8 boot screen for 15 min like it is loading. After 15 min, my screen starts flashing every few seconds like the PC is rebooting. My monitor shows me a DVI connection logo once second, and blank the next, and just keeps going in a boot loop like this. Any ideas why Win 8 won't boot?

I am bit shy of 24 hours, so I apologize if I am bumping this to early, but I would like to know what the problem is, and if possible, find a solution.

Can anyone tell me what this means? I get this message everytime I turn on my computer. I just hit F1 and Windows 7 starts. I do have a 256gb SSD where Windows resides. Wondering what I can do to get rid of this annoyance.

A:SATA Port 1 Device Error message

Look on your motherboard for SATA port 1. Is this where your SSD is plugged into? Or is there another HDD plugged in there? Either way, there is an issue with whatever device is plugged into SATA port 1

I am building a htpc but cannot seem to get windows to install onto my SSD.

The SSD is visible in BIOS and on the 'where do you want to install windows' screen.

I am wondering if that is because the OS cannot install to my mobos sata 3 ports

I have
crucial m4 SSD 4GB
MSI H61MA-E35 with usb3/sata3

The sata 3 ports are ASmedia according to the manual.

i think i know where this is heading and will be fairly annoyed if so because i bought this board specifically for the sata 3 boot drive option.

Help me out!

EDT, i am in ACHI mode for both the sata 3 and sata 2 ports

A:Unable to install win 7 64 on ssd while connected to sata 3 port

have tried IDE on the Sata 3 AS media port and it is installing.

So the question is

Is it better to install the OS on
the sata 2 intel ports in AHCI
the sata 3 ASmedia ports in IDE?

HAve the above card and its reporting a Bios version of 5.0.39. I have bought a ITB Samsung drive. The drive works in another computer but not the one with this card. I'm guessing that this version of BIOS which is old does not recognise discs of this size. I've downloaded the flashtool "siflashtool" and the latest bios "5403" but when it runs I just get confirmation of the card being there, it does not upgrade the bios.

Any ideas?

Good afternoon I recently needed to reinstall Win - Pro x I unplugged all my other drives all total and installed Win- with the new HDD connected to the SATA port of my MB Then post install I moved for Win-7 issue HDD glitchy the Changing port Sata the HDD with Win- on it to the SATA port and then plugged Changing Sata port for the Win-7 HDD glitchy issue in my other client disks that I support in Sata - I use my quot F quot key to boot from one to the other Since I have done this and did a fresh install of everything - NO cloning Skyrim operates glitchy with frequent NVIdia driver crashes and recoveries while in game And it is not exclusive to Steam and Skyrim Windows itself is glitchy with spurts of speed followed by what appears to be a quot dead quot desktop for about - seconds followed by everything coming back to life The graphical subsystem only hangs restarts under Skyrim and not under normal system load such as CAD CAM But the glitchiness I'm describing happens regardless of what I am doing in Windows When Win- was connected to SATA I had no such issues I am going to assume that installing to this HDD attached to SATA then changing the cables to SATA has caused Windows to become unhappy I have done some tests As I have good backups I reversed the role of the HDD's and the problem follows Windows not the HDD The problem seems to be specific to installing while any HDD is connected to SATA then post install and post updates moving the HDD to SATA port No Overclocking of anything in my MB settings Hardware AMD CPU GB DDR ram Win- HDD new W D TB Black NVidia GTX- MB Gigabyte XA-UD Latest Drivers And I cannot install Windows to sata with other drives connected I tried and Windows wiped out my customer's FreeBSD boot partition and the drive numbering that Windows showed in the installation partition selector was all weird So after recovering my customers boot partition then I bought this new drive and did my installs of Windows while only one hdd was plugged in at a time The issue seems to show up after everything is all done and the drives are all plugged into where they should be that Windows begins misbehaving periodically I did install the MB's sata and chipset drivers before attempting to install Windows Question Is there a registry setting s I need to tweak to settle all this down If so can someone point me to it please Sincerely and respectfully Dave Edit The drive is at current firmware rev No update needed

How could you possibly install the MB and Chipset drivers before the install ? And why ?

Put the new hard drive on sata port #1, do the install and leave it on port 1.

I just got a new computer from my brother the other day that is from like 2005 and has vista 64-bit home premium on it. everything works fine with the computer, and I had a USB hard drive that I've been using for over a year now that never had any problems with our slow comp from 2000. but this morning when I turned on my comp and went to listen to music I got an I/O error that caused the drive to stop working. the hard drive is a Seagate Free Agent 500gb model. same thing my sister has had for longer than me(the 250gb model though) and hers hasn't had any problems. I've attached a text file exported from the syspecs program.

This is a PURELY physical problem - up until I dropped my laptop on it's side on a table the other day, my DVD/CD drive read disks beautifully.

It opens and shuts smoothly and fine, but when I try and start up sims or play a DVD, it says there is no disk. I restarted my computer, and it is not responding accordingly. I will attempt this again, but first I would like to know if fixing it without replacing is even possible. I examined the disk holder bit and nothing seems crooked or broken. If it's misaligned, how do I tell?

If I can't figure out how to fix the damn thing, how would I go about ordering a new part?

The laptop is a Gateway M-1626 with a AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 with 2.00 GHz. 32 bit processor and 4GB of ram

A:Broke my Cd-Drive Fix/replace?

with most laptops the type of connection to thte board is via one plug affixed to the back of the drive (not like a desktop with power and then data) so if you're getting power to open the drive you probably have the connection you need. The lens that reads the disc is probably broken or way off line. Surely someone has a broken one of those laptops that you can get the drive pretty cheap used off ebay

I solved a similar problem in Win 7 by uninstalling an Advanced "6G" Storage Controller and letting Windows install its generic driver but I have no idea what to do in Win 10 because of the dumbed down way everything behind the scenes is displayed, which appears not to have anything remotely resembling such a thing.
Anyone else having similar issues? Or am I doomed with my now-almost-extinct 2009 Alienware machine?

A few questions come to mind: is the drive plugged into a eSATA port on the computer and its cable rated as SATA II? Or is it in an External USB drive case that is plugged into a USB 2.0 port or maybe a USB 3.0 port?

Perhaps not a question for sevenforums but I'd figure you guys would either have the answer or be able to direct me to the answer I purchased a Silicon SiI SATA Raid Controller purely to have extra SATA ports which I am using to connect to my case's external drive bays I have flashed the bios of the controller and updated the driver to put it in quot Base quot mode so it is not using RAID I did extensive research on this and it appears that I have this part right Controller? SATA on SATA-II Drive Raid For now I am trying to connect a WD BEVT quot SATA-II hard drive to one of these ports and am having some difficulty I can see the drive but when I try to format the drive in Windows or a command prompt using the windows recovery DVD it hangs I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue with a SATA-II drive on a SATA-I controller however most of the forums I have read state that if there is a compatibility SATA-II Drive on SATA Raid Controller? issue the controller won't even recognize the drive I searched around to see if there was a way to force the HDD SATA-II Drive on SATA Raid Controller? to SATA but the jumpers on this drive are for SSC and RPS Is there a way to fix this or do I need a drive that is capable of forcing SATA-I speeds Perhaps even a controller capable of at least SATA-II since that is the minimum of all new HDDs

A:SATA-II Drive on SATA Raid Controller?

SATA II drives are typically not backwards compatible with SATA I ports, especially on add-in cards UNLESS they have what is called "autospeed negotiation". This determines the max speed of the drive and tells it to compensate if it's too high (use SATA 1 vs 2). Unless there is a jumper on your drive, which it doesn't sound like there is, then the add-in card does not have autospeed negotiation. This is taken from Problems encountered installing SATA 3.0 Gb/s hard drives on SATA 1.5 Gb/s controllers.

I suggest finding an addin card that supports SATA II like this card: - Rosewill RC-211 Silicon Image 2 port SATA II PCI Express Host Controller Card(RAID 0/1/JBOD)

A:SATA motherboard port killing my hard drives?

As you probably know the issue is that the HDD shows as removable device in the taskbar.

I have the lastest drivers available from Asmedia and it does not remove the icon from the taskbar.

I also try the MS register fix
My internal SATA device appears in Devices and Printers and in the - Microsoft Answers

1- Since the sata port is not Intel , would the register location be the same for the proposed solution above to work?

2- I tried channels 0..5 , should I try any other number? The solution says that the channel in device manager it is not always the correct one. Under device manager , general tab it displays "Location 0 (Channel 1, Target 0, Lun 0)"

I will appreciate in suggestion.

thank you

A:HDD on Asmedia SATA port shows as removable device

This is normal if you have AHCI enabled as AHCI supports hot-swapping.

If AHCI is not enabled, and you have an intel chipset motherboard IIRC, you need to install the Rapid Storage Technology drivers. I've not proven this myself as I always have AHCI enabled.
