Problem when moving or renaming files on Samba shares

Q: Problem when moving or renaming files on Samba shares

Hello,
since quite some time, I have a weird problem. When moving or renaming files on a Samba shares using my Windows 7 x64 machine as a client. These files always end up in the share's root folder because in the corresponding SMB packets, Windows 7 only sends
the filenames instead of the full paths. More details can be found
here.
I tried it with a new Windows install in a VM, and then it works. So, I assume that some hidden setting in my main machine is incorrect. Reinstalling because of this is not an option.
What might cause this strange behavior?
With best regards,
Patrick

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The network is setup as follows:

1) "master" modem/router connected to Internet (192.168.1.1)
2) "slave" router connected to master router (192.168.2.1)
3) NAS physically connected to slave router via Gigabit LAN / static IP address 192.168.2.2
4) Laptop n?1 running WXP (192.168.2.10) and Laptop n?2 running W7 (192.168.2.7) connected to slave router via WLAN and DHCP using "reserved IP address by MAC address" feature of the router (802.11g with WPA/WPA2)

The problem is that the Windows 7 machine won't see either of the NAS or WXP machine shares.

The WXP machine can see and access the W7 machine shares.

The W7 machine is setup as follows:

- windows firewall OFF
- network connection configured as a Home/Work network, HomeGroup feature not used
- no domain, workgroup named WORKGROUP, same as WXP ans NAS.
- in advanced network settings, file and printer sharing enabled, network discovery enabled, public folders enabled
- Server service running.

In the File Explorer in the Network folder the W7 machine sees itself as well as DLNA/UPnP devices (Twonky Media Server running on NAS, the NAS itself (but not it's shares), the slave router), but no SMB shares.

The NAS user accounts is configured with a user account using the same credentials as the W7 administrator account.

Using the NAS finder program (QNAP finder) sees the NAS on the network but cannot map a drive or see the shares. Error message saying that the server cannot be found on the network. Trying to map a share as a drive in File Explorer doesn't work, even when using NAS IP address or name.

However, access to NAS' web interface works OK by HTTP...

After having tried to find a solution on QNAP's forums, I'm now turning to you hoping that you can help me out ;-)

Thanks in advance.

For Home Premium you don't have the local security policy in order to adjust the LM and NTLM authentication levels so you will need to do that in the registry.

If the key doesn't exist you need to create it. Back up the registry first just in case.

There needs to be a DWORD named LmCompatibilityLevel set to value of 2 " at
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

So open regedit and navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa then choose to create DWORD named LmCompatibilityLevel then set the value to 2 although value 1 may work.

Also according to the Samba site you may need to make another adjustment. I'm not entirely sure if this pertains to Windows 7 Home Premium or not.

Windows 7 Registry settings
There are currently two registry settings required to be added on the Windows 7 client prior to joining a Samba Domain. These are:
HKLM\System\CCS\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode = 1 DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0More about the Samba share and there is an update. http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7

This link explains what the different values do.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc960646.aspx

One of the LM values should allow you to connect to those Samba shares and this is about all I can find on this.

I googled this problem and found this forum but the for a files. VERY new Problems OS deleting, renaming irritatin moving, thread is older and does not address the problem I'm on a network where I keep my files but I'm very aware of whether or not these might be open elsewhere From time to time at any old time of the day randomly it seems in other words I'll go in and try to arrange rename or get rid of files Problems deleting, moving, renaming files. VERY irritatin for a new OS and I'll get quot The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer Close file and try again quot Except that the file ISN'T open anywhere I had this frustrating experience again just a moment ago so I went online to find this forum I didn't recall how the above message was quite worded so I went back to the same file and this time it allowed me to delete it Miffed I tried another and it worked again I tried yet another and this time I got the message This particular file I'm trying to delete hasn't been open for months Any Problems deleting, moving, renaming files. Are you using any media managing applications?
Have you tried setting the view to details instead of thumbnail?

Both of these could result in the system claiming the files are in use.
There is also an application I have personally found useful in detailing why files are 'locked'

You know how UAC user account Control asks for permission when executing certain programs or when renaming or Moving/Renaming? & Before Can Block/Warn UAC Governing files File modding certain files in certain directories Well i wish i could have it govern over many other folders and files because i tend to accidentally move my hand when double-clicking and may move or rename things by mistake even for simple files like music and movies and pictures Also is there a way to put a password on Governing files & Can UAC Block/Warn Before File Moving/Renaming? giving such permissions For me a simple warning of the UAC popping up would be enough because it gives me a chance to change my mind if i made a mistake However it would be good to raise the security level even higher for totally blocking family or friends from moving stuff around yet allowing them to use those files I just dont want say my children to screw up their quot Cartoons quot folder that has all their cartoon avi's in it or other things Governing files & Can UAC Block/Warn Before File Moving/Renaming? yet i still want them to watch them

A:Governing files & Can UAC Block/Warn Before File Moving/Renaming?

I remember finding options to make some of the changes you speak of. You can type UAC in the start-menu search bar to find the regular UAC settings to up it to always notify. The easiest way to make those changes is to use gpedit.exe, but its not available in Home Premium. I'll keep looking around for you. Would you mind telling me exactly what version of 7 you have?

Another Samba share problem I'm afraid.

Freecom NAS drive. Shares via Samba.

I took advantage of the cheap preorder of W7. When it arrives I see it's Home Premium. Doesn't bother me as I'm not doing domain type stuff at home. However, I cannot access the files on my NAS!!

Searching around here I see others have had the same problem but have managed to work around it with secpol and LAN Authentication Level. However, these aren't available in Home Premium.

Is there a workaround? A registry hack maybe?

Can't see this going on too long without being addressed via Windows update.

I was v excited to be giving my HTPC a new lease of life. I'm very disappointed to say the least.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hi there,

New to the forums and in desparate need of help. I've recently made the move to 8 on my laptop and actually really like it. Now I've got an ubuntu 13.04 server with some samba shares set up that are completely visible on my win8 laptop but when I try to access them I get Access Denied and it asks for my credentials again. I'm 1000% sure the details are correct, and I'm also sure it's a client side issue. I say this because there are 2 other PC's in my household, a win7 laptop and win7 desktop, both of which can access the shares when supplying the same credentials I do for my win8 laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Try making the following adjustments on the Windows 8 machine that needs to connect to the Samba share.

This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parameters in order to get Windows 8 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 8 machines that needs to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

A:Cannot connect to SAMBA shares on CENTOS7

You need to be posting this over at the CentOS forums. CentOS Index page I can tell right now that smb.conf is screwed up. That would be why you are having issues. Your workgroup must stay as "WORKGROUP" on all computers. I always kept a copy of the default smb.conf on my NAS or a USB Pendrive. That way if I screwed it up, I could just copy it back to the OS in the proper folder.

Once you get the default smb.conf loaded back up. You should be able to use "net config workstation" and get the output that is shown here. Samba Server Installation and Configuration on CentOS 7

As long as you are running CentOS 7, and follow the steps in the above link, it should work. CentOS is based off of Redhat. I tend to stay more towards the Ubuntu spin off of Xubuntu, because it is a lot easier to work with than CentOS, which was made to be used in an Enterprise environment.

Linux does have a strong learning curve. So be ready to pull hair out if something happens. Also use the search engines and the forums as much as you can to your advantage. It is a lot easier to keep on staying on top of always learning about Linux and its features as much as you can.

Last but not to be forgotten. Make an image of the install with Clonezilla either on a drive like the Toshiba Canvio, or on a NAS if you have one on your network. That way if you screw up on something and cannot figure out how to fix it. You can pull the image and start back with a working OS.

I just reinstalled after I was having issues. Everything seems to be working smoothly, except that I can't access the shares on all but one of my other computers for some reason. Most devices that aren't running either some flavor of Windows or Samba show up just fine.

I tried blocking port 139 and made sure Network file and printer sharing is on, and a few other things, but I'm out of ideas.

Thanks in advance.

A:Can't access Samba shares on 10049

Hi there

I have NO issues now with SAMBA on build 10049 -- before the "C" drive was only showing SOME files - now the whole drive / shares are visible. Works FROM SAMBA ===> WINDOWS and from WINDOWS ==>SAMBA. No problem either with WIN 10 ==>WIN7 and XP and from XP / WIN 7 ==>W10. I don't have W8.1 any more.

Running CENTOS 7 (64 bit) SAMBA version 4.1.12-21. If you use YUM there's a great GUI -- YUM-EXTENDER - makes updating a synch. Other distros -- not sure maybe some type of apt-get.

Try updating your system / distro with relevant updates.

I have a Linux Centos server with Samba configured. On the other workstations (XP and Windows 7), the server is shown under Network (centos5); not with my Windows 8 workstations.

If I map the network drive (e.g. \\centos5\www\), I have full access. What might I be missing?

A:Samba shares not showing automatically on network

You need to be asking this question in the Centos forums. https://www.centos.org/forums/ I use the Samba Server Configuration Tool, for setting up my Samba shares. Also make sure the Workgroup is actually named "WORKGROUP" on all machines. Otherwise it will not work.

I have a peculiar Samba share issue.

I was running Windows 7 on my laptop. I have a file server running Linux and Samba. When I open the Network icon in Windows 7, I see my server there and I can open it and access the associated folder shares.

I upgraded to Windows 10. Now if I double click the network icon, I don't see any machines except my local client laptop. However, if I enter the UNC path to my samba server (\\myserver) into the path bar of Windows Explorer, I can access the server. If I want to add a network printer to my laptop that is shared by the server, it won't find the server in the search list. However, I can enter the literal UNC path to the printer and add it. So it has something to do with nmb I think? Not sure.

Any suggestions on how to resolve it?

A:Samba Shares don't show up in Windows 10 Network

What version of Linux are you using and what version of Samba? Try using system-config-samba if running a Ubuntu based distro. All computers need to be so that the workgroup is named "WORKGROUP". Normally I send people over to the proper Linux forum for this kind of stuff, because I was too busy with work. Now that I am retired, I have a lot of time available to help.

Post your smb.conf before you make any changes, post a screenshot of your shares in the Samba Server Config tool. Then post the changes that you made with the tool that shows that they are working. Also make sure you go in and remove the ; in the Browseable line for the share.

You can check for windows shares in Windows cmd with net view should show all computers on your network.

So b asically whenever I try and delete or move a file I m problem and renaming Deleting, moving assuming Deleting, renaming and moving problem the deleting problem is rooted in the moving problem since deletion is just moving to the recylcing bin that progress bar either fills up the entire way and doesn t go or it just keeps calculating how long it will take or w e and that light green bar that hyperactively keeps moving well keeps moving and never ends I have to restart explorer exe from the task manager and then when Deleting, renaming and moving problem I go back it s all done So I can delete and move files but that progress bar just never leaves When I rename a file the window I do it in locks up So if it is desktop the desktop locks up If it is my personal folder the personal folder locks up Like moving deleting I have to restart explorer exe I downloaded Unlocker and it told me none of my files are locked up I can delete stuff with it just fine but that s because it deletes it off the face of the earth and not move it to the recycling bin The same problem happens when I move it though but when I rename a file using it the moving problem occurs bar fills up and just stops This is a huge problem because it means I can t delete files using non-explorer programs like mediamonkey and it also means that everytime someone sends me something through MSN my MSN locks up because it tries to move the file Also when I install some things it can t fully install because it can either not delete a file or it can t move it So yeah thanks P S Yes I have restarted nbsp

Hi, I hope you can help me. Yesterday I noticed a strange problem occuring when I try to rename files. I get a message saying "If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?"

If i click yes, it converts the file into some unusable file that i can't open.

I thought the problem may have been caused by a program I tried called CCleaner, which includes a registry cleaner. However, I kept backups of the deleted registry entries, and restored them when I noticed this problem. But that failed to solve it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it seems that you've either got a file open in another program, or at least windows or some other software thinks you have.

i used to get this problem with winamp - i listen to a folder, decide i want to move it, but winamp keeps the file reference in its history list (or something) and windows complains when i move it, even after exiting winamp.

a reboot always worked for me.

if it doesn't, can you tell us what sort of folder you are trying to move/rename?

I'm running the bit version of Windows and it's fully up to date in terms of patches This issue only affects libraries The issue started out of manually new to Have folder etc refresh renaming/moving/creating after the blue a couple of weeks ago Have to manually refresh after renaming/moving/creating new folder etc I hadn't installed any new software or changed any settings and I also tried using System Restore to go back to a couple of days before this issue started but it didn't resolve the problem This is an example of what happens - I go into my library called quot Videos quot and right-click and choose New - Folder The new folder does not appear I either press F or right-click - refresh and then I can see the new folder I created I give the new folder a name for example quot test quot The folder shows the name quot test quot I rename the folder to something else for example quot renamedtest quot The folder still shows the name as quot test quot I either press F or right-click - refresh and then the folder name changes to quot renamedtest quot Basically any time I create a folder rename a file or folder delete a file folder move a file folder etc I do not see the effects of my actions until after I've manually refreshed This only affects libraries Googling for this issue reveals dozens and dozens of threads and posts with people having the same issue going back quite a way but I'm yet to find a solution for the problem Does anyone have any ideas One option is to just not use libraries but I would rather not have to resort to that Thanks

A:Windows Update Affects Moving & Renaming Folders

Well I'm no help, but I've had that happen to me now and then at random times simce installing W7.

I never have figured out the real problem, but it's like there is a disconnect betweeen explorer and the real state of the file system occasionally and sometimes you are being shown wrong information. Then when you try to act on it (like deleting a file that really isn't there, either because it has not finished copying or it was already deleted) you get that error.

It usualy goes away by itself or sometimes after a restart.

It hasn't gotten any worse on my machine lately and am up to date. Only happens like once a month to me though.

Say I move ping.exe or netstat.exe from the system32 folder and run the command. I know the command runs (used wireshark for ping.exe to capture packets) but the display on the screen is messed up - nothing shows up.
Any idea why?

Is this a feature of windows 7?
How can I work around this?

Thanks

This is driving me nuts. Moving cbr and pdf files from one portable flash drive (F) to another (G). Bulk went over fine. Others however are giving me an error message which reads "Cannot copy (file name): The directory or file cannot be created". What does this mean and more importantly, how can I fix it?

I tried copying instead of moving with no luck. I also tried moving to my hard drive (D) which did work but from there couldn't move to (G).

A:Sharing files between Windows and Linux: Samba

Cautions about connecting to a Windows workgroup

I recently installed UBUNTU 7.04 and tried to access files on my windows computers on the same network after I had installed Samba.

I could see not even the host computer. I could see the Windows Workgroup with the correct name. When I clicked on that icon I got an error message something like "I can't access the folders".

I looked all over to discover what was wrong, but nothing I found appeared to address my problem. Clearly, my windows machines could see each other as shared files. I finally decided to rename my workgroup. I had heard that Linux used to have trouble working correctly when names had spaces in them. My workgroup name was something like "jack and jill". I changed the workgroup name on all my computers on the network to "jackandjill".

I, of course, changed the DOMAIN name on my Linux machine to JACKANDJILL and viola...it worked as it should have. I could see all my machines and all my shared files.

I suppose that most Workgroup Names don't have spaces in them, but it is something that SAMBA or one of its configuration tools should recognize as an error when a domain name is entered containing spaces.

Any ideas on how to accomplish this task greatly appreciated!

Hello, I was just recently moving some of my files from My C drive to E. It was all going smoothly as I had done it before but, this time instead of copy and pasting I dragged and dropped the files over. I was doing this to cut down space on my C drive, to my surprise though I saw it was increasing (drive C) by every file I had put on E. I would like to know if I had done something wrong or what happened I started at 148GBs stored and it increased to 156GBs. If it helps I was moving games from my x86 program files. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Im having a strange problem that only came about recently.

Whenever I move folders from my shared folders ( Users/public/public documents for example) it copies the files instead of just simply moving them. The folders are on the same hard drive/partition so there does not seem to be any reason it should start doing this. I dont know what I could have changed on the computer to cause this to happen either. it is quite a frustrating problem however because large files take a while to transfer when they should be moved instantly.

If anybody could help I would appreciate it.

Thanks

However, when I move (Ctrl+X) a file to the shared folder on the pc with win7, the file does not apear when I go to the shared folder from the XP pc.

Anyone knows what Im doing wrong?

BY THE WAY, is there a way to share the entire C drive or we are strict to the public folders? Its wierd that I gave full access permissions to the C drive, yet an error occurs while trying to access from XP. Only the public folders can be accessed.

You still need to allow premission to access the shared files on the Win7 machine. Just set up permissions on the Win7 machine by going to "Network and sharing center" and then to the left choose "Change Advance sharing settings". The select the settings in the pictures below.

You should also have access to the entire C drive once you do that.

I've been using my XP machine as my file server and it works perfectly.

Where are you moving the files to which directory, which drive? How much space is lift on the drive you are moving the files to? Try copying the files then pasting them or drag and drop them. Also try moving the files in chunks not in big segments of 10GB or more. Perform a CHKDSK /F on all drives.
Go to "Start" type in CMD located CMD.exe right click on CMD.exe then select "Run As Administrator" at the command prompt type in then hit enter...

Code:
CHKDSK /F
type in Y for yes then manually reboot.

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a desktop PC. I download pictures, and rename them using the rename process in Windows Explorer. When I rename pictures in the folder, they'll have the name like pic (1) pic (2) pic (3) and so on. I can rename pictures until I reach pic (10001). At that point, Explorer no longer automatically increments them. The renaming status bar turns red, and an error message says: "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder". I am however, able to manually enter numbers higher than 10001, so I'm not sure what the error message is referencing.

Is there a registry entry, or environmental variable that I can increase the value to be greater than 10001?

A:Moving files to external, formatting then moving back.

If your system is working well the best way to do this is to take an image of the old drive and then restore it back to the SSD, or simply direct clone the old drive onto the SSD. I've had good results with Aomei Backupper to do this. If SSD space is a problem you could remove data and unused progs first, and do disk cleanup.

If the system is on its last leg, you're probably going to have to reinstall the progs onto a fresh install of Win7 on the SSD.

In either case, back up your valuable personal data.

Have you checked to see if your antivirus program is scanning the folder when you first try to access it, thereby locking the folder and preventing any changes to it?

Try selecting the folder and waiting a few seconds - if that doesn't work try waiting up to a minute. If that does not have an effect, try disabling the live scanning feature temporarily and see if it makes a difference.

Ok, so there are two options: You can either make windows show file extensions like file.exe, or you can have it hide known extensions, like file . What bothers me, is why isn't there an option that hides everything but click to rename it, the extension shows up?

Is this possible?

Thanks,
Alex.

Alex, I don't believe that I have ever seen that. I firmly believe that the default should be to show file extensions instead of hide them. Big mistake and a great opening for the virus and trojan creators..

Just my opinion..

Greetings, I'm looking for a way to rename files via windows right click shell, a hidden windows setting or power toy, that will allow me to rename two files that already have identical names, but different file extensions, to a new but still identical name, without windows adding in an incremental number in parenthesis to the second file. I know I can just manually remove the added tag by hand however I have about 18,000 files to rename and am trying to cut down the amount of time it takes to do this. For example if I have two files, one is named thisdamnsong.cdg and one is named thisdamnsong.mp3 and I want to change them to thissong.cdg and thissong.mp3 without windows causing thissong (1).mp3 to occur. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if it's a program that I have, a registry key that's corrupt or what. I seem to remember this starting after my computer did it's Automatic Updates, but I don't want to remove the wrong updates/programs/registry keys and mess up my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I have a user who uses a laptop at home to VPN into the network so he can work from home. Everything works fine until he tries to rename a file. His computer gives him the error basically saying he is using invalid characters. He has tried to rename it very simple names (1, test, etc.). He can create folders and copy files into them and delete them but he just can't rename them. As soon as he gets back into the office he is able to rename folders and files using the exact same username and password he is using from home. Any ideas why he can't rename files and folders over the VPN?

I would like to know of a program that would let me remove the current name of files in a folder and replace the original filename with a number that represents how many files there are (goes up by one for each file). What's an app I can use that'll do this and how do I do this using that app?

Thanks in advance,

You can't unless you rename them individually. The Explorer will always append a number to your name when you rename several in one strike.

In windows vista, when I wanted to rename files in a folder all I had to do was right click on one file, rename it and click tab to move to the next file to rename. I didn't have to right click every single file, click rename, type the name, press enter and then move on. This has become a huge problem for me in windows 7 and I cannot seem to find an answer of solution to this problem.

I open a folder that has 27 pictures; I want to rename those pictures in a consectutive order, but in the order I want them to be; for example: R2290-01 and I want that exact style to follow through until R2290-27. I am okay with renaming every file by hand, but I want to be able to "TAB" between them and not right click and rename everytime.

HELP ME PLEASE! This is driving me absolutely nuts.

Hello,

Firefox 64 bit (Namoroka 64 bit) keeps renaming my files every time I download them. It adds a (x) suffix to my files, which is very annoying.

Here is how it goes: I download a file, it keeps the original file name. But watch this: I delete the file from the folder it was downloaded to, I download it to the same folder and it renames it to myFile(1). Same for the next times: myFile(2), myFile(3). Remember, the original file is no longer present, yet it renames it like there was some file name conflict, which there isn't. What's more: it does this for all my other files! Keeps adding (x) suffix like there was a conflict.

So why does it keep doing this and how do I fix it? Thanks

Hi,

Does anybody know how to rename a bunch of files in Windows 7 while ignoring the filetypes at the same time? In Windows XP this wasn't a problem, no matter what format the file had, the numbering would continue anyway. In Windows 7 the numbering starts over again when a file has a different filetype format.

For example:

WINDOWS XP:

file (1).jpg
file (2).mov
file (3).wma

WINDOWS 7:

file (1).jpg
file (1).mov
file (1).wma
file (2).jpg
file (2).mov
file (3).jpg
file (4).jpg

I want the numbering to continue in Windows 7... (NOT have multiple number ones or two's)

I have several hundred pictures that I recieved from a professional photographer for our school. All of the files have odd extensions such as .56, .86, etc. These numbers are actually part of out 10 digit id numbers. Is there a way to rename the files and keep those numbers? Or change the association of the file? I have tried several different ideas and the only one that works is the assoc command.

assoc .56=jpegfile

But then to do another i have to change the extension

assoc .86=jpegfile

After you have made the new folder, guess you have right clicked on it and checked that everything under Properties looks AOK?

Maybe clear the READ ONLY attribute and try again though you shouldn't have to do this really!

You could also try copying another old folder and pasting it onto the appropriate source (C) and try to rename it. Again this is kinda messy and should not be necessary.............

I have an RCA Lyra MP3 player. When I download an audio file from a website I belong to (I am a paid member, it is not illegal and it's not music) it downloads by a certain name that the website has given it.

I then change the name on my computer and copy the file to my player. When I go to play the file the original name of the file is still there on the display. The name always begins with the name of the website and this player has a very small display so if I don't change the name I will never know what I am listening to.

If I open up the player contents on my computer it shows the filenames that I have given it....but when I play the files I see the original filenames.

This is very frustrating. Can anyone help? Thanks.

hi,
i have a problem renaming files with long filenames. in fact, it won't even let me delete or copy or cut them.
i think this may be the problem: windows doesn't have a problem with letting me write long filenames. it does have a problem if i try to move these files into another directory (an error message comes up saying that the file name is too long to move). but i think the problem is that it DOES let me rename the folder that the long filename is in, rendering the file inside useless to me. (i don't actually know if this is the problem, i'm too scared to test my theory).

but anyway, i was wondering if there was any way of renaming my file. i've tried downloading a renaming program but that didn't work. is there something i can type into the 'run' thing?
zac.

A:problems renaming files

You can try doing it from a command prompt. If the file names are very long (>255), then you masy have better luck using the "command" console rather than the "cmd" one. Rename the files first with old 8.3 DOS names and then rename them from within Windows.

Start by going to Start > Run, and typing:
cmd <Enter>

Navigate to the folder where the files are and use the "ren" command to rename them.

If that doesn't work, try using "command" instead of "cmd" in the Run box.

Hi,

I've encountered a problem with files seeming to randomly rename themselves...

I have a "fileserver" (just a seperate box with a large sata HD) to store my music on, which I then access accross the network using winamp. The problem is that for some reason the files randomly rename themselves to their MS-DOS equivalent name, eg. Bloodhound Gang.mp3 becomes BLOODH~1.mp3. This obviously causes problems with my playlists as the files now have different names so the tracks get skipped.

Both machines are using XP Pro, and I've tried making all the files read only but this hasn't had much effect.

I'd appreciate any suggestions...

I am no expert, but when it renames files it is using the old file system instead of the Xp 32bit or Win NT file types.

This is probably small to most people and maybe many prefer it now, but when manually renaming a file the extension is not highlighted forcing me to have to perform a second manual operation to highlight the whole filename.

It is the 'rename' function but I use it to copy and paste the entire file name. Like I said it is probably a minor thing to most, but I do this many, many times a day so if there was anyway to have this function behave like it did in all previous Windows versions I would like to know how to do that.

Thank You,

Hi Mark,

Youe need to have the show file extions in the Folder Options checked to see the extensions.

Here's how:
1. open Folder Options (Control Panel or Tools in a Explorer(not IE7) window)
2. click on View tab
3. Uncheck Hide extentions for know file types
4. click OK to apply

Hope this helps,

I'm trying to delete and/or rename some of my music files that are located on my C: drive under My Documents/My Music and I keep getting a sharing violation error message on some of them. Some I can delete or rename just fine, but others I get this error message. Any suggestions?

I have Windows 2000 with Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1.

A:Renaming mobo BIOS files?

Yes, the BIOS files are raw binary images and it doesn't matter what you call them.

Of course there may be some proprietary solutions that use some weird format of their own. Such a file would result in an immediate error message from the BIOS flashing utility of course.

Hi, I have xp service pack 2. When I try to rename a file i get a warning that changing a file extension may cause the file to become unusable. If I go ahead and rename it anyway the file instantly changes format to one windows won't recognize. Is this a virus? Do I have a setting on or off that i shouldn't? Is windows possibly corrupt? Any help would be appreciated.

A:renaming files causes file to reformat

Hello and welcome to TSF

Click Start => My Computer, on the menu bar click Tools => Folder options, click on the tab View, tick the box hide extensions of known file types, click Apply => Ok.

Try renaming a file now.

Has anyone ever figured out how to solve the slow response in Win7 when renaming files? There's quite a bit out there in net world about this issue and I have the same problem with my new computer. You can reboot and all is well...for a few days and then slow again on renaming files.

A:Slow response when renaming files

Hello jberenyi.

I've been using Windows 7 for a quite a while and I don't now nor ever have had any "delay" when I re-name folders / files; can you give us some examples what you're referring to?

For the emails I keep within Outlook 98, I would like to change/re-name the "subject" so that I can better know what the email is about. Is there a way to do this? One solution is to re-send the email to myself with a new subject heading, but perhaps there is something even simpler than this? Thanks.

Hello again, colleagues all,
A friend of mine on the other side of the world emailed me with a Vista problem which I am submitting on his behalf (I am an XP person and know nothing about Vista).
In XP there is a feature whereby if you select a group of files in a folder, right-click, select Rename and then edit the first file to a name terminating in a number, XP will rename all files to have the same prefix but a sequential number suffix. My friend says that this does not work in Vista.
Any advice from you gurus out there ?

A:Group Renaming of Files in Vista

Hi Jim

It works for me in Vista Home Premium - I just tested it. I selected a group of three files, then selected Rename, typed in the new beginning name (this will at first appear to only be renaming the first of the batch), and then pressed Enter = the view will Refresh, & all the files should begin with the new name & have an incremented number in parenthesis.

If it's not working for your friend, have him check that he has ownership of the files (or administrative rights, at the least). With all the User Accounts Controls built into Vista, that might be tripping things up for him a bit.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

I know how to change each file name individually but I was wondering if there was a way to cycle through the directory and change the file name. I have about 40 files, that I re-use on a weekly basis, and the naming convention they use is 1111_Name_Date.xls, I tried using the Right Function and taking the Right, 4, but the bad part is sometimes it is more than just 4 Leading characters. The only thing I want changed is the Date on the end. I want it to remove the old date, and add today's date. Is this possible?

Currently have 3 Drives F, G & H and Windows XP is been installed on F Drive and G and H Drive has all got Games and Softwares Installed.

When I try to do a clean install on H Drive (200 GB Free) it says Windows have found Old Windows Install Files and this would be re-named to Windows.old, now i dont have any Windows files installed on H Drive it has got games with like this H:/Program Files/Games is this the reason why it saying older windows files found and I dont want to renamed them as it would mean re-installing all games over again.

Any helps on this.

A:Install - files renaming to Window.old

Hello Dinjo, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You would need to install Windows 7 on a separate drive or partition than the H: drive if you want to keep the games and software installed on it. However, you will still need to reinstall the games in Windows 7 though. Installing Windows 7 on the H: drive would not keep the games intact after installation.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

i am archiving many old mac files from an nt server. the mac files' names contain a slash that appears as a |(pipe) symbol on NT. DOS sees it as a ? and i can't rename multiple files. i cannot copy these files to a cd unless i rename by getting rid of the | symbol or i replace it with a - (hyphen). right now, i am doing this one file at a time, and we are talking thousands of files. i tried rename wiz, but that understood the symbol like dos (?), and wouldn't work either. i need to be able to rename many files at once. can any one help?
thanks - staatsk
