Preferred Solution: Build Installation Stuck and Downloading from start

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I seem to be stuck on Windows Insider build 14342 (Version 1511 OS Build 14342.1002). Since this build was installed, I haven't gotten any other insider builds.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I want to avoid having to reinstall if possible.
Is there a way to manually install build 14352, the one that followed the one I'm stuck on?

Hello Sammy7,

As this is an unofficial build only available via torrent sites it would be a breach of forum rules to discuss this

So it's pretty straightforward. Build shows in update but stays stuck in download state.

A:Windows Update Stuck at downloading

Try disconnecting your PC from the internet>close Windows Update>reopen windows update and see if an install (not download) button is showing and click it. Then reboot and start downloading the next batch. Sometimes Windows needs to install what it has before it can download and install the rest. You might have to do this a couple of times. Windows also (like recently) has to update Windows Update before it can further download.

Hi Everyone....

I have been struggling thru this Win 7 update hassle on my two Dell PCs both running Win 7 , 64 bit, SP1, Windows firewall, and Avast Free. In the past, updates just took a while, but eventually, they went thru OK.

Suddenly, after this week's updates, one of my PCs got stuck at 0% downloading 5 selected updates since Tuesday. The other PC updated properly with no problem.

I have left the system on for hours on end, but it is still 0%.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

free up some resources, (stop unnec. services, not needed startup programs, not too many apps running at once), add more ram, faster internet connection
sounds like your pc is using a lot of processes at one time and causing the pc to do too many things at one time for what it can handle

My Windows 10 version 1511 is set to download and install updates automatically but this morning, the updates download got stuck at 0% for a long time. Even after a reboot, it would not budge.
Do you guys have the same problem here?

Maybe during the downloading of the updates, I had turned off my notebook, so would that have a negative effect on the way the updates are downloaded or in process of downloading?
So for example, next time if there is a Windows Update and the downloads are in progress, is it OK to turn off my machine while Windows 10 is downloading the patches or security updates?

The only way I could recover from this mess, is that I read these steps from the below link.
? ??? -updates

But overall in general, the way Win10 handles these updates is a PURE MESS, and I hope in Redstone, this will be fixed.
I never had these issues in Win7...

A:Win10 Updates stuck downloading

I had a hard time updating my 10586 (1511) Version so I let it update and download over night. DON'T !! it also downloaded the "Feature update", meaning the anniversary update and tried to install that. I interrupted the update so Windows will be forced to go back to the 1511 Version.
Whenever a new cumulative update is available, I made it a habit to download it from the catalog:
Microsoft Update Catalog

that way I do not rely on the Windows update and can do that even disconnected from the web.. Has always worked for me...

Hey guys,

So basically, I ran windows update on my PC (I recently made a fresh install), it started downloading very slowly ; until it reached 25% where it's been at for 30 minutes. I tried stopping the download and selecting another update, to see if it was just one update that wouldn't download, but I had the same result :

Windows update was just stuck downloading.

EDIT: screen of the updates in question :
I tried to stop the firewall in ESET Smart Security; nothing. I tried the Fixit tools (.exe and .cab versions), nothing. (except that the .cab version is just stuck too).

Has that happened to any of you guys before?

I had problems yesterday with windows update (BSOD while installing updates), and it just wrecked my computer, and I had to restore to factory settings. But that can't be related?

A:Windows Update service stuck in downloading

Update : I tried to reboot, and got stuck on "windows is preparing your computer blablabla". So I hard rebooted, logged in, and now the windows update service doesn't show up any longer, I can't run anything because the UAC prompt is gone (I can't do anything that requires admin privileges)...

I am currently restoring my computer using the windows restore option... And it's stuck on "restoring your files".

So if it doesn't work out, I'll have to factory reset my computer for the third time in two days.

This has never happened before but I can't download the latest batch of updates! I've tried downloading one at a time but it makes no difference, just stuck on downloading 0%. I've tried to go into services.msc to switch off windows updates but it says 'stopping' with the options to stop/re-start greyed out.

I've tried the windows trouble shooter which detects problems and then says resolving but again after 20 minutes or so it still says the same thing. Does it take a long time (perhaps I'm being impatient)?

I've run out of time tonight but will try the windows update system readiness tool tomorrow.

In the meantime, does anyone have ideas I could try? As I say, I've never had problems downloading updates before.

A:Another thread about Windows Update stuck at Downloading 0%

Hi John,
The simple answer is MS doesn't want users on W7 any more.
We just have to put up with this situation.
However they say, IF you you want to believe them, that they are in the process of addressing the slow D/L and install of updates for us.

we just have to live with it

note the comp you have with 2Gb ram will allways suffer, thats the min for W7.

Must admit having looked at an awfull lot of windows update logs cant remember seeing those entries

Yesterday when I started downloading windows update, only one update could be downloaded i. KB3114431. After that may be there was some sort of problem on the network and I could not download the other updates as my network was down at that time. so I disconnected from network and cancelled the downloads and shut down the computer. It normally installed the downloaded update. after that from today morning I am unable to download any updates. The network is fine, as I can browse the internet normally. But windows update screen keeps stuck at 0%. Though now the shut down button shows the alert icon for update installation as you can see in screenshot. Is there any way to fix it? Thank you.

Hi shawn What version of Windows are you using?
Relevancy 49.02%

During a busy period, aware that Windows 10 can install itself by a sneaky update and being too busy to check each update that comes my way, I had disabled Windows Update. Only now did I remember to check for updates. I know, dumb.
There are 80 important updates that need to be installed. They all seem okay.

However, they've been downloading for over 90 minutes now, and the progress bar is still stuck at 0%. "Downloading 80 Updates (0 KB Total, 0% Complete)".

I thought these updates might solve my "slow PC issue" (referred to in my other thread), but the inability to download updates, makes me think there might be something seriously wrong with my computer.

Can it still be just a visual issue if nothing has happened after waiting for 90 minutes?
Thanks in advance,
This has been posted twice (?) I don't know how that has happened. Sorry. If you can tell me how to delete it, I will.

You can Shut Down your computer and install updates.
Or you can download the Windows 7 Update Convenience rollup. Microsoft Update Catalog
As for your Slow computer, you did not paste a link to your other post, and your post history does not show anything about a slow computer.
Click on the link in my signature for PC Running Slow? and try those things.

I am using XP home and not sure what to do when I have installed something. It tells you to exit all open windows - what does that cover.

I have Avast antivirus, Zonealarm, microsft antispyware, spybot S&D, Spyware blaster and Kodak running - do I have to exit all of these (surely I will leave myself unprotected). I have just been closing a few of them down but would really like to know the correct thing to do = do I also have to come off the internet?

A:Installation after downloading

In general, "Close all open windows' refers to items that are actually open on the screen or things running in the menu bar. It does NOT refer to things you see in the systray (system notification area - generally lower right).

You should NEVER have to disable your antivirus or firewall to download or install an application. You *may* have to tell your AV and/or anti-malware apps to allow the installation, as they may be watching for and notifying you of this type of activity.

When I downloaded the Windows 8 iso from my Vista desktop, it defaulted to the 32 bit version, I guess because 32 bit is what is on the desktop. But I want a 64 bit iso. How do I specify that?

A:Downloading Win 8 installation iso

Hello Vincenzo,

Unfortunately, you can't specify which one you wanted. Instead you'll need to redownload the Windows8-Setup.exe file on a 64-bit PC to be able to get a 64-bit ISO.

Hope this helps,

I have not been able to get any updated insider builds since 10565.

Keep checking Check For Update but it says "your device is up to date"

Any suggestions?

A:Stuck at 10565 build

Manually update to 10586 by downloading iso from ms, double clicking on it and running setup.exe. Then make sure you rejoin the Insider Program in update menus, and leave pc on for up to 48 hours

Note - do not clean install if you did not install windows 10 upgrading from a valid 7/8 licence, as it will not activate.

I was wondering if someone can walk me through the wiring A tad confusing for me I mean it s not like those - pins things which are impossible to mess up Its those wires that can fit either way I m a bit lost First this is the build What s been done so far Hardware wise everything is in the case Applying the thermal was easy The psu is plug in right video card is set the power supply for the processor is set it s everything else I m trying to go with a dual drive first one being a hdvd and the other a reg dvdrw I have several of the ribbon cables now sure how to connect them I mean it tells you how for one but for two drives The fans I m not sure how to connect same with the HDD What really annoying is the cables from the case they are purple black red not sure which way they go This is way the MSI manual has this is the mobo Now the stuck first Please on build. help. on wiring pc heatsink fan is kind of interesting Where do I plug it in to the motherboard It have three slots routed through a control knob stuck on wiring on first pc build. Please help. I m keeping it on max which part of the mobo should I put the heatsink plug in to thanks nbsp

A:stuck on wiring on first pc build. Please help.

Sounds like the optical drives are IDE, so the one on the end will be master, the one in the middle slave and the other end of the ribbon goes to the mobo.

The case lights/ switches should be labeled with things like HD+, HD- PW-, PW+

It takes a little translating, but HD+ would be the positive lead for the HD activity lights on the case so pins 1 and 3 in figure JFP1. Power switch are pins 6 and 8... just make sure to get the + and - right on each set.

I put together a mostly new machine on Saturday Everything is new but power supply case and graphics card Within an hour of getting windows installed I got my first BSOD while downloading some games The error code appears to be pretty generic so after looking on google for a few minutes I decided it may have been an issue by error large 0x0000007e files New possibly downloading caused build caused by not installing windows updates so I initialized them and started browsing the web There were quite a few updates including SP but before they could finish downloading I got another BSOD which caused the updates to fail After trying a handful of times New build error 0x0000007e possibly caused by downloading large files I was able to get most of the updates to install there are still that fail every time not sure if it's related or not but I'm still experiencing the BSOD I left my computer on to download a game through Origin and when I came back a little over an hour later it had reset after crashing I got the notification after signing in I started the download again went to bed and when I woke up the computer had restarted again after a crash I've used WhoCrashed to analyze the crashes and it's calling out both the graphics driver and the ethernet driver as possible culprits I have the latest driver available from the manufacturer's website for both

i downloaded norton antivirus 2001 for w95 and installed it... it worked fine but would not update -- said it was corrupted, so i stupidly went to

i removed norton.
i tried to re-install norton
i realized some files were duplicated afterwards
i lost hard drive space
i tried to delete norton and symantec program files
i couldn't
i re-installed norton once more, stupidly

i've gone from 1.3 gb free space to 994 mb
norton a-v 27 mb

i'm not touching that program again until i get some info --

how do i reclaim that space?
how do i load it correctly?

norton explained my problem, after i messed with the norton a-v 2001 program...

thank you,

I am on build 14393 and I am trying to update to 14905 or 14915, but when computer restarts after trying to update I get a message that windows is rolling back to previous version (my version 14393), without making the update. I tried through windows update, i tried also downloading the iso and update windows via iso and i tried updating via windows media creation tool. All efforts had the same result, which was rolling back to version 14393. Any thoughts? Must be a minimum hard drive space available? Cause i have 55 to 60 GB free disk space.

Turns out I'M STILL ON THE SAME VERSION THAT I WAS WHEN I PURCHASED THE FREAKIN THING! Also, when I check update history, THE DAMNED THING HASN'T UPDATED A SINGLE TIME! i dont know whats wrong with your system , but i can show you a way to get Anniversary update . Download Media creation tool, make a bootable disc and when you boot from disc it will give to 2 options > upgrade your computer & >fresh install. choose whichever you prefer .
OR you can use the update utility form the microsoft website to force update your system to AU
Media creation tool will get you the latest AU update build i.e. 14393.10 :)

Hi there
I can't give you a reason as to the error but this might work.

Try starting Windows in SAFE MODE as you've done but disable Networking and then shutting down. This should clear out any "Stuck" services. Switch off Firewall and uninstall any AV software whilst in SAFE MODE.

Incidentally while you are logged on in save mode see what starts automatically and stop those you don't need -- there are posts around suggesting what you can stop running automatically.

When you try again in "Normal mode" start DISCONNECTED from any network and switch your wireless card off.

That happens when your OS is not activated. You can confirm this by pressing Windows key+S and typing "PC Info". Select it. At the bottom of the information it will tell you something like "Windows is not Activated" or "Windows is Activated"

if it's not activated Microsoft wants you to provide the key to activate your OS.

Hi Francislaw and welcome to the Ten forums!

I found some similar behavior on other forums and it looks like disconnecting USB mouse helps.
So, if you have USB mouse connected, disconnect it and then run diagnostic and updates.

I had the Windows 10 install files in $WINDOWS.~BT and $Windows.~WS totalling >5GB. A few days ago I decided to also download the Windows 10 ISO.

I've now found that the 5GB+ installation files have been deleted.

I'd like to have both options regarding the upgrade and so would like to re-download the installation files. How do I get them re-downloaded?

If I click the Get Windows 10 icon the only option is Upgrade Now, not what I want - unless that will initiate a download and then give me the option of not starting the actual upgrade.

Hope this makes sense.

A:Download installation files deleted after downloading ISO

I know you want to have both options, but it really is not necessary. You have the ISO file. That's more than enough.

As to the disappearance of $Windows.~BT and WS....................
Did you do any disk cleanup using the built-in Disk Cleanup or using Ccleaner ?
Did you recall you selected to delete the "Previous installation file " in order to delete windows.old ?
I know that happened to me when I used Ccleaner and selected that option under Advanced heading.

Hi, simplest answer is avoid windows update and create the appropriate bootable medium or iso and use it as you did before.
As you know plenty of people have this sort of problem.

Note that the upgrade can introduce new issues for some (search the net), and some are delaying because of that. Older machines like yours could well exhibit such problems. So before you make this change, I recommend you create a disk image of your existing setup - a procedure you should do routinely anyway- to give another way of restoring your system.
E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for images.

It's best to have a physical bootable medium as it covers all of:
a. if you need to repeat the installation
b. as a bootable medium for recovery options
c. in case you need to do an in-place upgrade repair install

without taking up disk space.

I believe you are going to need more room.

Kill the current update attempt, reboot and try it again only skip the Updates part. See if that works.

Filling out your System Specs would be a help.

I began installing Windows XP service pack 1 and the installation ran into an error. It says the file 'asms' is needed. I've tried using two other installation discs from friends and that does not work. I've tried having the computer boot from those discs to start a new installation but the current installation(with the error) is stuck in it and will not allow me to access the boot selection menu to boot off the disk. If anyone knows how to either start a fresh installation or resolve the missing file issue, I'd appreciate it.

To clarify the "stuck in installation": The computer boots instantly into the windows setup and displays the error. When the box is cancelled, it cancels the installation attempt and reboots the computer only to have it do the same thing again.

A:Re installation gets stuck

Disregard that entire message. I think this is a hardware problem, maybe I damged something. But I got it installed sucessfully I think. It goes through the picking the account screen, explorer starts and instant freezeing after clicking on a default shortcut or the start menu although I can make highlight boxes.

If I wait about 5 minutes I get blueness of death (O noes) and it restarts too fast for me too understand what is stated.

Now I must take it to incompetant (That how you spell it?) and say fix it, then when they can't they'll send it too acer (O god), if I get it back somehow working I will be in shock lol. (Ok in all reality I have yet too have a problem with Acer or Best Buy but it's bound too happen).

EDIT: Just a note I will wait 3 days for a reaply in hopes that I can get this fixed w/o bothering with Best Buy or Acer. AndI know this topic is getting no attention from my typo of re-installation it looks more like a reply to something.

Hi All
I tried to install in August the RC of Windows 7 and had to leave it because I had the same problem I am having now:
I have a msdn subscription and I have downloaded the Win 7 Ultimate, I recorded the ISO in two differents DVD and also I have created the booting USB following the indications of this forum (with UltraISO).
The problem is that the installation app always gets stuck in the screen when it is copying the Windows files. The progress remains at 0% and never changes (after waiting for 3 hours...). It reads:
Copying Windows files (0%) ... and nothing happens.
I can move the cursor and so on, but the DVD drive (or the USB drive) seems to be stopped.
I have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2Ghz 2Gb RAM, HD SATA, DVD SATA as well.
Any help??

A:Stuck during installation

Hello Runif and welcome to the Seven Forums!

Indeed it's really weird. But we can search for a few things:

1. When you say the wireless icon flashes, you mean it turns on, or it turns on and off repeatedly?

2. If we should focus on that wireless thing, I can suggest 2 things:
a. Turn off the other notebook if it's on during install, perhaps it tries to connect to the same network and results in an IP conflict.
b. Turn off your wireless access point/router during install. Maybe an IP conflict or something is taking place again.

3. Disable the wlan from BIOS if possible.

Windows 7 should probably have detected and installed the correct drivers for your wireless card, and maybe it tries to connect somewhere which might cause the problem.

Try that and let us know if it helped. That's the only thing that comes to mind right now.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.  Let´s try to get this fixed. Please tell me, which Windows version is installed. Also tell me, if it is 32- or 64bit.

You should stop the install, eject your CD, and clean it... if it can't copy the file, it's probably because your disk is dirty. i installed my system in like 2 hours. So, check your cd, if it's really dirty, or there are scratches, try downloading a new version(it will be legal, cause you already have an original, right?) or go to a friend, and ask him for his CD...

If you need help getting to the recovery screen go to the tutorial section of the eights then click on "r" and it will bring up a screen that will hopefully be able to help you. If not then post back here and I will walk you through the process. . .good luck.

Hi All In the last week I have set up my sons very old university tower PC in a spare room it was hand built years ago and his Uni installed Windows XP on it Its only when we turned it on we got messages saying the copy of windows was not an official copy but it still allowed us to surf web and all that a computer should do with Windows working fine but just not getting updates I got a new copy of Windows XP and the discs keycode and began the load of the new installation Xp Windows stuck at Windows XP without removing any programmes The installation had to go through Windows Xp stuck at installation around five areas to fully install and it did the verification checking files and got to the installation section and started to go through this area showing countdown of to minutes to Windows Xp stuck at installation go then it just started Windows Xp stuck at installation to go round and round sticking on this - minutes to go with the screen blacking out with just the cursor blinking in the top of the screen I tried numerous times to switch off and on and each time the screen goes to the installation page and just continues to go around the full circle back to the - minutes area and obviously failing to load although the message says loading which it obviously is nt as the disc in the drive stops spinning and the computer just goes then to a black screen As a result I cannot access anything or get out of this cycle the disk has put me in I dont have passwords or anything to access the computer in its hidden depths so wondered if there is any way of breaking the cycle its in and trying to get the new windows disc on so I can use the computer nbsp

Might worth it to format (erase everything) and reinstall fresh.
When doing an update to an operating system it is difficult to get the system stable again, since a lot of files are supposedly to been "updated", but in the process the system hangs or the files are being used or simply corrupted copy process and all goes to oblivion.
Hard way: Try the recovery console by booting from your XP CD.

Have you tried booting into safe mode or a start up repair?

When I run the Windows 7 build 7600 installation, it goes through the first step of copying files or something like that, then it restarts, and starts the second part (expanding files?) and about 1/3 of the way through that it says installation failed. I am doing a clean install of build 7600. I already have build 7100 installed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. System Specs are in the System Specs tab.

More often than not A failed install is caused by a bad dvd ISO. Where did you get the ISO, and how did you burn it?

It looks to me like your trying to upgrade which (funnily enough) uses more files from the DVD. You may need to re-burn the DVD at 4x speed or slower. It should not matter what user you are logged onto but you could try running the setup.exe as admin and see if that helps.

Hi guys.

Appologies if the answer has already been posted but I have been looking over the internet ages with no luck.

I have just built a new pc. It consists of:

MSI 770-C45
Phenom II 550BE
4GB (2x2GB) Crucial 1333 DDR3
Powercolor HD 4770
WD 160GB sata HD
Sony dvd/rw

(All parts are brand new)

Most of the time when I try and install it, it completes installing features in about a second then crashes and the mouse is stuck. Sometimes it doesnt get that far and crashes on the loading windows files etc. Im pretty sure its not the dvd as it worked fine in my brothers pc.

So far I have tried:

Updating BIOS
Taking a stick of RAM out
Swapping the graphics card
Putting the RAM in different slots

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its the 64 bit version btw, and im doing clean install as there is no os on at the moment.
