Renaming Things in the Network Map

Q: Renaming Things in the Network Map

OK, I have looked for a bit now, and I just can't seem to figure out how to rename certain devices in my network map.

For instance, my Media Extender is named "unknown" and my switch is called "switch"...

Obviously my Computers are the PC names, and that part is fine...

This is a mere personal preference issue I realize, but I will be adding another swtch to my network soon, and another wireless access point this week, so I'd like to be able to easily distinguish all the devices...

My computers all run vista, so I'm not having the XP thing going on... everything is there.... I just want to rename.

I am sure I can rename these, but it just isn't coming to me on how to do it? Any ideas... I'm sure I'mm looking too deeply into this, its probably way too easy, so hopefully someone makes me feel stupid....

Thanks for reading

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Trying to get a program FREEPDFXP to work the other day I arrived at point viewing the procedure below It came from a Eudora Help page My question however has to do not with getting FREEPDFXP working but with the reasons behind the instructions in the Help file Re Step If you rename those files how is whichever program that might need them going to find them Also re Step how does renaming a aren't when Renaming things working Files file correct a problem I ve run into this more than once I wish I could specify a particular problem where the solution says quot rename a file quot but I don t have one at the moment -------------------------------------- MAPI is not working Document ID HQ ISSUE MAPI doesn t Renaming Files when things aren't working work I can t install MAPI when I double click on the Renaming Files when things aren't working icon nothing happens If I set Eudora s MAPI options to always nothing happens SOLUTION You may have a few corrupt MAPI files on your computer Your best option is to rename the Windows MAPI dll files NOTE You might need to reinstall any programs you have that are currently using MAPI as Renaming Files when things aren't working well The first thing you need to do is close down all applications Search your hard drive for the following files and rename them mapi dll mapi dll Restart your computer Search your hard drive for the file swmapi exe Double click to install it Open Eudora go to Tools Options MAPI Set quot Use Eudora MAPI server Always quot Reinstall EIS and perform a HotSync NOTE If you cannot see your HotSync Conduit you will need to do the following Close all open windows search your hard drive for the file called win ini Open it and add the following lines MAIL mapi mapix Restart your computer and perform a HotSync again nbsp

I would like to rename my home wireless network to one that distinguishes it from others on my street. Not only that but I get the sense that if other networks near mine are named the same that the will not be listed separately in the list of "Available Netorks".
I tried renaming the network connection from the control panel, but this seems to have only renamed the connection as it is seen by this computer. I also run a work laptop and I want to be sure I'm on my network & not someone elses.

I renamed the wireless network (ESSID) of my router from one of my Windows XP PC's, and then found that my Windows 7 PC could no longer see any networks at all (there are several from neighbours in addition to mine).

Nothing seemed to help - Rebooting, uninstalling drivers for the wireless card, etc. Eventually I got it to work by giving the network card a fixed IP address, and the it could see all the networks again. I could then change it back to DHCP and it was still okay.

A:Solved: No connections available after renaming network

Static ip address is always smart way to go.

PC boots slightly faster too, although that's very minimal difference.

How can you rename Network printer Icons? You can certainly do it in Windows95/98. We are running a Novell network and need to rename some of the network printer icons on WindowsXP computers.

Hi guys,

Just installed W7 Home Basic today and not had a problem so far but i have a little annoyance that i hope i can fix.

Please see the attachment image where you see in ipconfig it says Wireless Network Connection 2, but in Network & Sharing Center it clearly says Wireless Network Connection.

At first i tried going through registry and finding anything that said Wireless Network Connection 2, and changed it to just Wireless Network Connection which seems to of partly worked as its now displayed right in the Network & Sharing Center but the actual network adapter when using ipconfig still shows 2, can i fix this?

Thanks guys.

Are you able to connect to the internet when booted to Safe Mode with Networking (restart the computer, continue tapping F8 and select this option)?

i was wondering if there are any browsers out there or any apps that let me choose a different gateway than the one my computer is apparently forcing my pc to use perhaps i should elaborate i am logged into a corporate network using novell workstation client via my ethernet interface i also have a wireless network that i use to test an application i am developing for web use when i wish to test my app i must unplug the ethernet cable from my laptop open firefox IE Opera and connect to the test site when i want to come back onto the corporate network i must plug the network cable back in and things XP 2 windows in for interfaces using different network pro run a script that re-authenticates me onto the novell network here i feel more and more stupid each time i do this i have tried a few half-hearted attempts like changing the default gateway on my ethernet interface to be the ip using 2 network interfaces for different things in windows XP pro of the wireless router testing on a second pc i guess is an option but using 2 network interfaces for different things in windows XP pro i d like to be able to copy paste error codes and that kinda thing as well as it seeming a bit of a waste tying up pc s for this i am assuming that novell windows doesn t like me trying to use another interface on a totally different domain for my internet connection if a browser exists that i could specify which connection to use i e defining connection at the app level i guess i d be in luck i could do this on the unix without too much difficulty but the ways of the windows are unknown to me i was even toying with using VMWARE for this virtualising an OS and then tying up the wifi for my second instance but come on there must be another way i think i am not seeing the forest for the trees here thanks in advance for your help alex nbsp

Hi
I've just jumped to Win8.1 from 7 and am trying to work out how to unclutter my windows explorer navigation pane.

The bit in question is the "This PC" - it used to just have my c:drive and other network drives, but now it has all these other network devices (security cameras, and sonos amps etc) plus also Desktop, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos folders (which are sort of duplicated under favourites).

Is there a setting somewhere to not show all these extra items, and just go back to showing my C:drive and mapped network drives?

Thanks loads for any help,
Far

Hi. . .You mentioned a BSOD with bugcheck 0x76, but I don't see any mini kernel memory dump files in the attached zip. I would recommend that you start backing up your files in preparation for a Windows reinstall. A fresh install could end up breathing new life in your system &/or it may help figure out if hardware failure is in fact the cause of your BSODs.If a fresh Windows install BSODs before you've had a chance to install anything else, it is extremely likely that hardware failure is at fault.Regards. . .jcgriff2

I think i deleted a bunch of important things. oops! Also how do i put my settings back so it proves that i am the admistrater for my computer im pretty stupid

Guys,I am going to build a gaming pc which components will used items. Can u tell me which things should i recall in my mind while buying used HDD,GPU,PROCESSOR,MOTHERBOARD,RAM,DVD DRIVE,PSU etc
What i figure out what ever i buy it must have warranty.Any advice is very needed.Thanksssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

A:What things i should keep in mind when buying 2nd hand things???

1. Make sure they work and are compatible with the OS. You can check Windows Compatibility Center. (Win8)
2. Check to see if current drivers are available for the GPU.
3. See if updates are available for the Motherboard BIOS and chipset (INF files).
4. Make sure the memory modules are compatible with the Motherboard. (Speed, type, voltage, etc.)
5. Replace the Motherboard battery.
6. Verify that the PSU will support your hardware.

Good luck!

Suppose the answer changes based on who you are buying from. A lot of these things either work or they don't...

HDD - you could use something like Crystal Disk Info and hope everything shows up green. Or run a Long DST with Seatools (will take 5+ hours on large disks)
GPU - Visually inspect that it is clean, if possible have them run some benchmarks on it and monitor the temperature to make sure its reasonable and there is not artifacting or crashing happening.
Processor - If its less than 7 years old and hasn't been heavily overclocked it has an extremely high chance of being fine.
Motherboard - This is probably fine too if it is shown to work at all, check the caps to see none are bulging or leaking.
RAM - Nothing quick you can do here, ask them if it has passed multiple passes of memtest, you could have them show you, but it will take at least overnight before you get a real answer.
DVD Drive - if it burns disks and reads its fine. If it dies on you, not much you can do, things are like $16 new anyway, don't put a lot of thought into this.
PSU - just find out what one it is and google if it is any good. This really depends on how demanding your system is.

Basically you just have to have a little faith in who you are buying from and ask them if something doesn't work right away if you can return it.

Is there any way to get wizard101 working and pinnable?

The title pretty much says it all, just today my laptop has been acting really weird and I noticed someone tried to install a keylogger on my laptop but I can't delete the setup for it or even move it to a different folder. A box pops up telling me "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I even tried enabling my built in administrator account to delete it from that still wouldn't budge though. My anti virus doesn't seem too bothered by it but I don't want it there! lol please help -_- I am running Windows 7 home premium, pretty much brand new dell xps 15z.

Hello,And welcome to BleepingComputer.com, before we can assist you with your question of: Am I infected? You will need to perform the following tasks and post the logs of each if you can.Malwarebytes Anti-MalwareNOTEMalwarebytes is now offering a free trial of their program, if you want to accept it you will need to enter some billing information, so that at the end of the trial you would be charged the cost of the product. Please decline this offer, if you are unable to provide billing information. If you want to try it out, then provide the billing information. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated when you were able to do it to see if you may still be able to afterwards.

I have a user who uses a laptop at home to VPN into the network so he can work from home. Everything works fine until he tries to rename a file. His computer gives him the error basically saying he is using invalid characters. He has tried to rename it very simple names (1, test, etc.). He can create folders and copy files into them and delete them but he just can't rename them. As soon as he gets back into the office he is able to rename folders and files using the exact same username and password he is using from home. Any ideas why he can't rename files and folders over the VPN?

I would like to know of a program that would let me remove the current name of files in a folder and replace the original filename with a number that represents how many files there are (goes up by one for each file). What's an app I can use that'll do this and how do I do this using that app?

Thanks in advance,

Greetings, I'm looking for a way to rename files via windows right click shell, a hidden windows setting or power toy, that will allow me to rename two files that already have identical names, but different file extensions, to a new but still identical name, without windows adding in an incremental number in parenthesis to the second file. I know I can just manually remove the added tag by hand however I have about 18,000 files to rename and am trying to cut down the amount of time it takes to do this. For example if I have two files, one is named thisdamnsong.cdg and one is named thisdamnsong.mp3 and I want to change them to thissong.cdg and thissong.mp3 without windows causing thissong (1).mp3 to occur. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't unless you rename them individually. The Explorer will always append a number to your name when you rename several in one strike.

Can any one help me? I try to rename my files/folders and upon typing in the new name I hit enter and the new file name won't appear until after I either close the window and re-open it or I refresh the window. Same thing happens when I right click and create a new folder, the folder won't appear until I refresh and then I name it and have to refresh yet again. This is getting quite annoying.

I don't know if it's a program that I have, a registry key that's corrupt or what. I seem to remember this starting after my computer did it's Automatic Updates, but I don't want to remove the wrong updates/programs/registry keys and mess up my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I can't locate the cd (it worked fine before and shows up when I power up with the boot dosk "w/ cdrom support"....it doesn't appear in My Computer (or on Device Manager), and only one of the hard drive partitions appears......the only drives shown are "C" and "A"............there ought to at least be 2 HD drives.......and of course, the CD drive.........

also...."fdisk/status"..has 3 drives listed and "c" and "D" are the hard drive....
does this make sense?..

thanks!!

I was wondering if it's possible to rename a device from what the driver used to install provided. My monitor driver works for 4 models, so whenever it appears in "Devices and Printers" or "Device Manager," it's named a series of model numbers rather than just the one that it actually is. ie. I have a SyncMaster 931BW but it's called "SyncMaster 931BW/906BW/931CW , SyncMaster Magic CX931BW (Digital)"

I already managed to rename my printer with no trouble, but there are a few other things I wouldn't mind renaming as well.

A:Renaming devices

You can change the name text in the '[Strings]' section of the .INF file included with the driver (edit it with Notepad), then run the setup.exe. Windows will then display that name in "Devices and Printers" and "Device Manager".

Is it possible to change the drive name to get rid of the "Floppy" I accidently added during the initial setup? I can't seem to find a way.

.
You could try uninstalling the drive from the Device Manager. Then reboot the computer - Windows will re-detect it and may give it the default name/description.

I have a whole bunch of files (mp3 mostly) that I need to rename. I know you're probably already thinking a tagging software, but this is different. I'm not sure if there is software that does this, but I need to rename all the files to according to date or size or number... Example... I need it to look something like this:

"MP301.mp3
MP302.mp3
MP303.mp3"

And so on...
Is there any way I can do this without having to rename every single one? There are hundreds of them. And I need to do the same thing with jpeg files, but I assume it'd be the same way as the mp3s.

Thanks for reading.

I just bought a new Win7 computer. Had a heck of a time logging into it from my other computers.

Finally got on.

Found my username was DougsDell.......-PC\Doug's Dell.......580

Can I change both names DougsDell.......-PC and Doug's Dell.......580. Want to simplify things.

Also, do I have to have a password to log in to the computer itself? It's just my family here and don't want to go through logging a password in each time I turn on the computer.

And lastly, do I have to have a password for the first time each day I get on to one computers files through the other one. When I click on a folder on another networked computer it makes me log in with user name a password. I'd like to eliminate that.

How do I rename a .tar filt to a .tgz file. The file has been zipped via winzip when I unzip I get several folders full of files. I am trying to do a manual firmware update for my stupid literati ereader.

A:file renaming

You don't just rename a .tar (Tape ARchive) to a .tgz (Tape archive GZipped), they are different formats.
You can convert one to the other, but both are used, typically, in the UNIX world. There are Windows and Mac programs that can handle both formats. But neither format is popular in the Windows or Mac worlds.

As for unzipping, it really all depends upon what you have put into the .tar or .tgz file to begin with as to what it gets re-constituted as. If it is just one file, or a collection of files from one directory, then you should not get more than one folders result. If it was some construct of a combination of folders, then the result may be the same construct of folders when unzipped.

I say MAY BE because some unzipping programs give you an option to get all the files back into the original construct, or you can override that and get all the files back in just one folder (you just better have unique file names, otherwise some files may get overwritten).

If all you want to do is replace a file or two, within the single compressed (.tar, .tgz, .zip .whatever) then some compression programs may give you that ability as well. Look into the features of your compression program.

Here we go again, another issue that shouldn't even be possible. If you have multiple video or image files in a folder and they have different formats, i.e wmv mov mpg try to rename them all to one name. Guess what... a huge jumbled mess. A whole bunch of files with the same name. Why would windows rename like this it never use to before? Its either a bad setting or a horrible idea by Microsoft please help me fix this if possible. thanks

A:Renaming Shenanigans

Those file names are valid because they have different extensions (your extensions are hidden).

Search for "Folder Options" and under the "View" tab you can change the settings (uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types").

i have a bunch of directories, each one contains exactly 1 jpg file, What I would like to do is to rename all the files cover.jpg, but when I do search on *.jpg and try to rename, it renames every file to cover(1).jpg

Is there a way I can rename the files without tedious folder-by-folder renaming?

A:file renaming help?

Are the directories all in the same tree? If they all descend from the same folder open a command prompt in that folder. For example if they are all under C:\top open a command prompt in c:\top then enter this command
For /R %s in (*.jpg) do ren %s cover.jpg

and hit enter.

Edit: It should work as long as there is only one .jpg in each folder. (I hope.)

I just had to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I have two hard drives and two burners.

When I click on burners to rename, there is NO option to rename. I have never seen this before.

I have two hard drives and each is partitioned into 3 partitions.
The main drive (with OS) gives the option to rename but does NOT actually rename the drive.
The secondary hard drive does NOT even give the option to rename.

I have done this for years and have never had this come up. Does anyone have any ideas???

A:Rootkit that keeps on renaming itself.

Hello -

AVG is reacting to one of your DAEMON Tools drivers. Ignore it, and try to teach AVG to leave it alone. You may want to upload a sample to AVG.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Java(TM) 6 Update 7

This is outdated, and a security risk by having it installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall these older versions when you update, nor tell you that you should. Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this.

Leave Java(TM) 6 Update 11 alone, as it is the most recent.

Other than that, your logs appear clean.

Hello.

Here is an easy way to add "Rename" to the right click context menu of the XP recycle bin.

Open Notepad.
Paste in the code below---
[codebox]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=hex:70,10,00,20
"CallForAttributes"=dword:00000000[/codebox]

"Save As" say "recycler.reg".

Save to Desktop for easy access.
Right click it & choose "Merge".
Reboot.
Right click Recycle Bin & see "Rename" as an option.
Rename it to what you wish.

You can change the icon too.
That is simple.

Not worth going into.

Maybe someone else will expand on that subject.

I hope this helps someone.

Ok, so there are two options: You can either make windows show file extensions like file.exe, or you can have it hide known extensions, like file . What bothers me, is why isn't there an option that hides everything but click to rename it, the extension shows up?

Is this possible?

Thanks,
Alex.

Alex, I don't believe that I have ever seen that. I firmly believe that the default should be to show file extensions instead of hide them. Big mistake and a great opening for the virus and trojan creators..

I didn't have to right click every single file, click rename, type the name, press enter and then move on. This has become a huge problem for me in windows 7 and I cannot seem to find an answer of solution to this problem.

I open a folder that has 27 pictures; I want to rename those pictures in a consectutive order, but in the order I want them to be; for example: R2290-01 and I want that exact style to follow through until R2290-27. I am okay with renaming every file by hand, but I want to be able to "TAB" between them and not right click and rename everytime.

The old folder is visible, and it is also selectable, but I then get an error message (see other image) saying the location is not available.

Check your memory. Use the memory diagnostic test (type that in search) over night

Make sure your graphic card is working properly and updated.

Check for updated drivers.

Hi Anscombe. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista.

The "TrustedInstaller" is the owner of record for much of the Windows folder. You do not have "permission" by him/her to edit any files. You can "take ownership" of the Windows folder and accomplish what you wish.

You need to first "take ownership" file in question and set the appropriate file permissions for it alone. This can be accomplished tediously via a series of screens through Vista or in the following manner:

Bring up an Elevated command prompt via:
START | type cmd into the start search box | right-click on cmd (cmd.exe) | select "Run as Administrator" | next to the prompt type the following exactly as it appears in the command:

takeown /f c:\windows\system32\catroot2

icacls c:\windows\system32\catroot2

Now try to rename the file.

Regards. . .

Otherwise I might have to recatalog some 15,000 photos again. I'd rather not. Thanks so much to anyone who can help me. Thanks.

A:Help renaming a VolumeID

That's some awfully stupid software you have there...you should really tell the developer not to do something so stupid.

i was scanning my system that day using Bitdefender total security 2008. I had 3 folders locked and password protected using folder guard.

Now, after the scanning is done, those folders' files' extensions were all added with .bd.ren. For example, if a file was door.jpeg , it was renamed to door.jpeg.bd.ren !!!!!!

all my files almost 20,000 files in the 3 folders are with an extension of .bd.ren

HOw do i fix all those files ???????????????????

Hello Here s my problem Recently my computer busted and I had to get a new one My new motherboard only takes SATA and I have old IDE drives so I can to HD h: (from external Renaming d:) t use the drives on this computer but I have retrieved the data on it I have A LOT of music that I had moved On my Renaming external HD (from h: to d:) old computer I have spent countless hours at least dozens of hours organizing my music on winamp as I listened to Renaming external HD (from h: to d:) it I rated songs put songs in the library all that stuff When I moved winamp over fortunately all this information is saved however all the song locations have changed from D to H H is my external drive where I now keep the music So basically none of the songs work when I m using winamps library So I think this problem can simply be fixed if I can change the external drive from H to D so the locations match Or if somebody knows another way I can fix this I ll be glad to hear that too I ve tried changing the location listing on winamp manually but it doesn t seem to let you do it and even if I could unless I could do it for all the thousands of songs at once that wouldn t be feasible Thanks for any help

Hi Sandip,

Can you repost the image without the error message obscuring the folder path? It may give us a clue as to what the problem is.

I have two hard drives that my friend installed and labeled them f and g. I want to re-label the f drive back to c because I cannot install some types of software when the hard drive is not labeled c.

Please help me A.S.A.P!

A:renaming hard drive

You will probably need to reinstall everything, as renaming the boot drive will cause severe problems for all the programs already installed, the Registry knows they are on F:
If you rename it as C, then the registry will be looking for the drive that no longer exists. There will be hundreds of entries.

I have 10 or so files in a folder:

folder\file_01_01_01.swf
folder\file_01_01_02.swf
folder\file_01_01_03.swf
folder\file_01_01_04.swf
...

i would like to rename these files:

folder\newfilename_01_01_01.swf
folder\newfilename_01_01_02.swf
folder\newfilename_01_01_03.swf
folder\newfilename_01_01_04.swf
....
I have the code to change each file seperately,

' Sub Rename()
' Dim FileName As String
' Dim NewFileName As String
' On Error Resume Next

' FileName = "C:\folder\file_01_01_01.swf"
' NewFileName = "C:\folder\newfilename01_01_01.swf"
' Name FileName As NewFileName
' End Sub

but i was hoping for a slick way to do it all...
any help...

My document files seem to be named incorrectly and I cannot seem to rectify it. An example of my problem is: I save a file into Documents and the name comes up as
C:\User\Lis\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\File Name (Currently there are 13 Document folders, a similar number of photos and contact files).
I have tried deleting the empty files and lost them, then I tried to copy and paste the files into to the previous document folder with the same result.
Can you help me. Thanks Lis

A:Locating and renaming files

Your folders are too deep for windows to handle correctly. I saw the same problem that was created by an end user on my windows 2003 file server. How'd you pull off mucking up your folder hiearchy like that? I would like to know because I can't even duplicate what some of you users are doing. It's actually amusing and befuddling at the same time.

I have alot of music in a folder and only some of it has an album specified. Is there any way to delete all of the album specifys? So that every file has that field blank?

A:Help: Batch file renaming

Yes, do you have iTunes? Because you can edit the ID3 tags of multiple mp3 files at once in iTunes, so you could import all of the songs that you want to remove the album name and select them all and then set the album name to nothing.

If you need more detailed instructions on how you can do this, then just let me know and I would be happy to help you

hi,
i have a problem renaming files with long filenames. in fact, it won't even let me delete or copy or cut them.
i think this may be the problem: windows doesn't have a problem with letting me write long filenames. it does have a problem if i try to move these files into another directory (an error message comes up saying that the file name is too long to move). but i think the problem is that it DOES let me rename the folder that the long filename is in, rendering the file inside useless to me. (i don't actually know if this is the problem, i'm too scared to test my theory).

but anyway, i was wondering if there was any way of renaming my file. i've tried downloading a renaming program but that didn't work. is there something i can type into the 'run' thing?
zac.

A:problems renaming files

You can try doing it from a command prompt. If the file names are very long (>255), then you masy have better luck using the "command" console rather than the "cmd" one. Rename the files first with old 8.3 DOS names and then rename them from within Windows.

Start by going to Start > Run, and typing:
cmd <Enter>

Navigate to the folder where the files are and use the "ren" command to rename them.

If that doesn't work, try using "command" instead of "cmd" in the Run box.

A:Renaming folders trouble!!

Right click the folder, poperties
Uncheck READ ONLY - try it again

If that doesnt work, something within the folder is being used. If your trying to rename it when using explorer, that can happen

Check the processes, and look for anything suspicious

I set up some folders with subfolders inside them. When I went to rename the folders, all of the items in the subfolders was deleted. I have looked in the recycle bin and trash and cannot find the items there. What happened to the items that were in the subfolders when I renamed the folders?

A:Problem When Renaming Folders

Hello Michelle, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if renaming the folder back to it's original name may restore them. If not, then the programs Recuva or ShadowExplorer might be able to recover them.

Hope this helps,

I would like to rename scanned documents by using an Access form. The idea would be to link (not embed) the images (kept on the server) to an Access OLE form, view them one at a time and rename the actual document (not the link name in a table). Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Hi guys,

I have a bunch of mp3 files that I recovered off a bad drive but the file names are "File001, file 002" and so on.

The attributes of the file still show the file name, album, etc. Anyway to have all the files automatically renamed according to their titles?
