Preferred Solution: System Restore not Working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Automatic Restore Points is not working in System Restore. Task Scheduler is empty during last 30 days.

A:Automatic restore points is not working in system restore

Hello Rocasan,

Double check to make sure that System Protection is turned on for your Windows drive.

Next, use the free program CCleaner to see what it shows for what restore points you may have like below.

Hope this helps for now,

Hi!
I recently noticed that when I do a Google search, the link redirects me to random ad sites, making it nearly impossible to get to the page that I want. I tried System Restore, only to realize it won't let me go past the last step. Also, my CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. You can watch movies and discs in the drive, but it will not recognize a blank disc for burning music or photos.
I have AVG, and it has only detected tracking cookies. I scan with Malwarebytes on a regular basis, and it never seems to find anything. I scanned with AdAware, and it detected tracking cookies as well. I clean out my Cookies and Temporary Internet Files folder quite frequently, but I can't seem to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help!

A:Google links redirect, CD/DVD drive not working, system restore not working.

Please download RootRepeal Rootkit Detector and save it to your Desktop. * Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. * Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them. * Create a new folder on your hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract (unzip) RootRepeal.zip. (click here if you're not sure how to do this. Vista users refer to this link.) * Open the folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator... * Click on the Files tab, then click the Scan button. * In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select all drives showing, then click OK. * When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window. * Click on the Save Report button and save it as rootrepeal.txt to your desktop or the same location where you ran the tool from. * Open rootrepeal.txt in Notepad and copy/paste its contents in your next reply. * Exit RootRepeal and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "Safe Mode".

I have windows 7 home premuim 64 bit
I went to create restore point on my new dell and after about an 1/2 hour of waiting for SR to open up I got this:

You have no Restore Points. Use System Protection to create restore point.
When I attempt to turn on System Protection, it doesn't show any drives available when it opens -- it just says that it's searching for available drives and it keeps searching and doesn't stop. Eventually, I'll receive the following Error Message:

"There was an unexpected error in the property page: System Restore encounter an error. Please try to run System Restore again (0x81000203)." also all button are greyed out. I wanted take an image to show you but that's not working either. Is there hope?

Thank you.

After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working My questions are if I completely reinstall windows and start from scratch will this definitely solve the problem I thought system refresh would have worked so I'm not sure Also are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch Thanks so much in advance -Aaron

A:System Restore and System Refresh not working completely!

Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

Clean Install - Windows 8

Good luck.

My laptop is currently running Windows 10 Anniversary Update and I have the Windows Disc from which I have installed this window but now I have installed bunch of Apps and installed Windows Updates. I want to backup all of my Apps, Settings and Updates. If I ever install Windows 10 again I just don't want to install all those updates and apps again (I might not even remember all of the apps I have now) so How can I create a backup now so in the future whenever I want I can just restore back to this point? Should I create a System Image or System Restore (Restore Point) or a Recovery Drive or Backup and Restore (Windows 7) ? I don't know which one is the right for me because I have never done any Backup, Restore or Recovery. Please Help.

The other day I was trying to figure out what coral paintshop pro meant by security key, so I googled it. Something popped up and asked me if I wanted to download, and I wanted to say no, but my laptop's mouse is too sensitive at times, so I accidentally clicked yes. My computer automatically shut down right after that. Every time I turn it on now, it goes straight into System Repair and it doesn't work, it says it cannot repair. I've tried System Restore, but since that doesn't get rid of the documents that have been downloaded, it isn't helping either. My computer won't even let me enter any form of Safe Mode, it just goes straight back to System Repair. Please help me. My Aunt got me this laptop for my High School graduation and I cannot afford to have someone fix my computer right now.

You could try this link. Just be aware that CNET tends to bundle other software with its downloads so choose 'Custom' or 'Manual' install. Whatever you do, don't use 'Easy', 'Quick' or 'Automatic' options and look at every screen carefully before you click 'Next' !

http://download.cnet.com/CyberLink-PowerDVD/3000-13632_4-10352449.html

Alternatively you could try the freeware VLC player, which you can get from here -

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en_GB.html

I use the VLC player as my default for all video and music and I have yet to find a format it can't play.

Once you start a System Restore it is irreversible, you get a warning to that effect before you actually click on the 'Restore now' button, which is why you cannot undo it.

Windows XP Pro SP3.  Although a number of problems with this PC have been corrected with the help of members on this site, there still remain a few. One of the present problems is that System Restore does not work, nor will regedit export its files. I'm using erunt so the latter is no hardship.
I ran rkill and FSS - the logs are below.
One of the members here stated that the System Restore problem was solved by by re-installing sr.inf from the c:\windows\inf folder. I tried this, but it led me to a BSOD and a memory dump. I booted back with "last known good configuration" and it's back now to where it was.
I'd be grateful for any help in correcting the remaining errors.

Post a HijackThis log and see what shows up...pluse your Uninstall list
Download HijackThis to your desktop

Double click on HijackThis on your Desktop
Then click on Unzip
It will install to Program files by default
Then Click Start>>>Run type C:\Program Files click OK
Look for a folder called HijackThis
Double click on it
On the right you will see a Icon of Dynamite with plunger
Double click on the Icon
Click on Icon and choose "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

It may help if you post your Uninstall list.
Open and Run HijackThis
Click on Open Misc Tools Section button
Then Click on Open Uninstall Manager
On the right hand choose Save List
Copy & Paste it in your next reply.

Welcome to System Restore screen permits 2 options:
(1) Create a restore point.
I can do that, but it does not appear on the calendar. I have set Windows to set a restore point once a week,
(2) Restore my computer to an earlier time.
Next screen "Select a restore point" does not display a calendar as it should. It displays a box reading "There are no restore points created for this day. To restore immediately, pick another day and restore point and
try again." But I do not see any previous restore points, no calendar.
I cannot "go back" or "next".
Question: How do I correct the problem? I do not want to use the registry.
Can I uninstall System Restore and then reinstall? I have done a google search, with no luck. Have gone to the microsoft web site, with no success.
I would appreciate help.

One quick possibility. Go to the services icon in administrative tools and check that system restore is set to automatic. If it's disabled or on manual reset it to automatic. Once you get your machine make a restore point and lebel it 'after cleanup' or something like that. Any time you install or remove something, even upgrade a driver or run checkdisk, make a system restore point. It can save you major headaches.

I have the Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium operating system. I want to do a system restore but I keep getting the error message that Windows was unable to restore my system because it could not access a file (Error 0 x 80070005). The error message suggested turning off any antivirus programs. I tried turning off Bitdefender, as well as my firewall, but that didn't help. I also tried doing the system restore in Safe mode, but that didn't work either (I got a different Error Code in safe mode: 0 x c0000022. I ran system scan from the command prompt to see if I am missing any system files or any system files are corrupted. Everything looks OK. Checkdisk did not find any problems either. I checked to make sure System Restore is turned on, and it is. Any ideas about what is preventing System Restore from doing a successful restore?

Not having the XP Install CD or and XP Upgrade CD makes repairing the SR programs harder. Have you tried running SFC /scannow to determine if there are corrupt files? If not you may want to try it. Also if you were not given the Install CD then the install Cab files should be on your system somewhere. Try doing a start\search\files and folders and type in *.*cab and look for any folders that have a designation of Win_XX.cab
XX being numbers.
If they exist then you have a place where you can extract new examples of any files found corrupt.
However if there is registry corruption the SFC command will not help us and a XP CD will have to be had. Do you know anyone who has one? If so it is perfectly legal to borrow this CD for the purpose of repairing your current legal installation. If you can locate one follow the Instuctions listed at the website.

Hello All,
I`ve tried 6 different system restore points but with the same result each time.Vista shuts down and restarts itself but does a normal boot sequence. I t doesnt appear to start the restore ! 5 minutes or so later a message comes up saying there may have been a power "cut" or a system error. I tried it with antivirus off but that didnt work either.
Any suggestions ?
Another problem Im having that may have some bearing on the above is that none of the windows updates are being installed despite many attempts
Im using Vista Home Premium

A:System Restore Not Working

it sounds like something is seriously corrupt there, tbh if i where you id be doing a clean install myself, i had a similar problem where the restore points would not work on my laptop so i just wiped and reinstalled and works no problem since with the restore function

When you are asked to push "R" for recovery, that will actually take you into the Recovery Console. (sometimes it takes a while for the Recovery Console to open, be patient ) Learn more about Recovery Console HERE. It does not sound like that is what you want to do. If you want to install Windows, when prompted you will need to delete the partition that the existing instance of Windows resides on, and then install the new instance to the unpartioned space. This is called a clean install that will include formatting of the harddrive. Learn more about it HERE. Another option is to do what is sometimes called an upgrade or dirty install. Learn about that HERE.

I need to restore my system to the state it was in yesterday morning (having foolishly downloaded a program which created a Z: drive). When I run System Restore it goes through the motions, reboots, etc., but finally tells me that "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore".

This is not a new problem. I have needed to use System Restore a number of times over the last year but always got the same message. I have tried different restore points without success.

I have tried to perform a system restore recently and whenever I do I am presented with this message

"the restore point selected was damaged or deleted during the restore"
I tried many restore points but I keep getting the same message.
I run SFC /SCANNOW and it doesn't detect any problems.
Startup repair also did not detect anything.
also I have tried chkdsk, turned system restore on and off and set Volume shadow copy to automatic but I still get "the restore point selected was damaged or deleted during the restore."

Why is this happening? and how can I fix this?

basically, my laptop is infected with spyware. I can't even get on the internet. The only real solution I know to this problem is to use system restore. Unfortunately the malware disabled it. I have checked around google and have gone to registry editor and have typed in the value of 0 in DisableSR. This should work and enable system restore again. However when i try to use system restore after doing this, it says the same thing. then i go back to the registry editor and the value isnt 0 as I put it. Anyways i need help. If it helps my laptop is a netbook with windows xp home edition and i doubt this matters but it is an Asus.

System Restore won't work on this machine - it keeps switching itself off.

If I go to the System Restore settings, I can switch it on and create a restore point. The restore point is then shown if I immediately check the list of available restore points.

After a short period of time, e.g. 20 minutes, checking the System Restore settings shows that it's switched off and my restore point has disappeared.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

The RP1... RPxx files may contain 565kb one minute, 2.78kb then next. I've had one of those RPx folders show 90megs, come back a couple minutes later, and the same folder is showing 2.8kb.

I've tried the SR.INF install routine, and RP1 showed 256kb and RP2 showed 47.6MB. Checked it out a short time later, and both folders were less than 20KB. Something seems to be eating the files.

Tried to create a restore point and the pop-up message reads, "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again." Each time I restart and try to create a restore point, I get the same message.

When I try to restore to an earlier date, the right side message reads, "There are currently no restore points available"

If any of the system restore files get corrupted, thats about what happens.

You are best to purge all restore files and let it create new ones, as the existing ones are unuseable anyway.

Purging just requires turning off system restore, rebooting and turning it back on.

A:System Restore Not Working

I had similar trouble and my appeal for help resulted in LOTS of advice but nothing worked for me. (A search would find my original posting).

What did work for me was my installing the software Super AntiSpyware Free Edition and discovering by chance that there is a Repair section and listed is a repair of Windows System Restore.

I clicked on this and miraculously (!) my problem was solved.

I now have Super AntiSpyware Professional installed but my problem was solved with the Free Edition. Maybe worth a try?

The other day i installed some buggy drivers for my sound card that left a redundant icon in the control panel, so I thought I'd do a system restore, the only point I could restore to was from about 2 months ago, it was better than nothing, so I tried to restore to it. After a long time i get some message about the shadow copy has timed out. I decided to try in safe mode, which worked. But still the same error message out of safe mode if I boot normal windows. I read on some site that I must make sure that the system restore service is running, I check in services, guess what... no system restore service. I'm not sure at all about what to do now...

A:System restore not working

Generally, you can just use the roll back functionality in Device Manager in Vista to restore a previous driver.

The service is not present in Vista. SR is handled by the volume shadow copy service (and others).

See if you can create a restore point. Go to Start > Search (or Run), and type:

systempropertiesprotection.exe

Hello. I am trying to use system restore, but it does not work. I select a previous system restore point to restore to everything works fine until the computer reboots. Then its says system reboot did not work, nothing was changed and try another restore point.

A:System Restore Not Working

Try this:

You will need to be able to view hidden files, so go to Start>> Control Panel>> Folder Options>> View tab.
Under Advanced settings, place a check mark in: "Show hidden files and folders".
Then uncheck: "Hide extensions for known file types".
Click Apply, then OK to exit.
Open Windows Explorer, then go to Windows>> inf folder.
Open the inf folder and find a file named:
sr.inf

I cannot get my system to perform a successful restore using the System Restore feature of Windows XP SP2. It goes through the steps, reboots and gives me a message that the system cannot be restored to the checkpoint I selected. This happens regardless of the checkpoint I select. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks ...

I think we had a discussion on this in the past where one of your restore points is bad and if one is bad, then all are bad. This may or may not be the case, but I am sure that a staff member in this area will be able to expound on it.

It is possible to run system restore from a command prompt. More info can be found HERE.Are you sure System Restore is turned on? Start > right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tabMake sure "Turn off System Restore on all drives" is UNcheckedIf that doesn't help, you have to ask yourself why it isn't working. Are you experiencing other buggy behavior from this computer? Does it run slower than it used to?

Hello.

Your disk looks fine to me . Method three was simply to check if you had enough space for System Restore. You have a few hundred times more than enough.

Proceed to method 4 and 5 and tell use if any of those work.

Hello

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.

In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.

I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

System Restore if is not working for a particular date then you can go back to earlier dates and try to do a system restore once again.

About "Invalid handle messages from my external modem braodband stick error 6."

Navigate to Device Manager and go to Network Adapters and uninstall the current driver for Network Adapter and restart the computer. Once the computer restart the computer will install the new drivers for Network Adapter.

Let me know if it works.

A:system restore not working

Hi Megan and welcome to TSF !

Do you have the XP install disk ? If so go to start => run and type sfc /scannow (mind the space after sfc). This will run the system file checker which will replace any missing or corrupt system file you could have with a good copy. It may ask you for the XP CD. Don't do anything while it's running.

Better to scan your hard drive for errors as well. Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /F /R (provided c is the volume letter of your system drive). Answer no when it asks to unmount the volume then yes to schedule the scan during next restart and reboot the computer. Report here if it found any error.

If that didn't help then go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. In the event viewer check the different sections on the left (security, system, application) and tell us about any error there could be there. Tell us about the source and the event number, double click the error and paste the text under description (right-click won't work so use ctrl+c ctrl+v to copy paste that text after you highlighted it).

My system restore application has recently stopped working within the last month. I have attempted to restart this application as instructed through Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Services & Applications/Services/System Restore Services.

I have tried to do a system restore to a previous date in July2009 in safe mode and when the system reboots itself, I get a message saying the system restore has not been done.

I have also checked to see if the system restored was disabled, which it was not.

If a file that is associated with this application has become somehow corrupted, how can I fix that?

Please help with your feedback. Thank you,
Cynthia

I have a HP ZE4430US laptop running XP, sp2. When trying to access Restore, either through Help & Support, or through the System Tools, I get nothing. Help won't even open. Under System Properties, Restore is not turned off. Somehow, somewhere I found the Restore file and clicked on it, and it wouldn't open.

In April, I installed a Maxtor Mini to use as a system backup. Could it have hijacked Restore? Not much info came with it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

A:System Restore Not Working

See if this helps at all. .

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD or an integrated SP3 CD if SP3 is installed).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2,(or SP3) you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

If this doesn't work, I would advise doing a repair install using your Windows XP install disc.

I am not sure this is the right forum, but I thought I would start here.

I attempted to restore to a point I created last night. I received a message that the system could not be restored to that point. I also received a warning that my Avast AV 2015 Background Service was not running. The computer was running slow. I ran system restore again to undo the restore point and after the shutdown and restart I received another error message that the system could not be restore to the point I started from. I also received the same Avast warning. It appears the desktop has some icons from last night, as well as some from today.

I suspect the Avast AV may be causing a problem with the system restore, but I am not sure.

I ran sfc /scannow and it did not find any code integrity violations.

I could use some help on how to proceed. Thanks.

Why don't you say what error message was displayed?
Shutdown AVAST or even better.... uninstall it, so it can't interfere in the process

This is a two part question It started a few days ago after Firefox did an update The next day I noticed working System restore not that when I entered a search request in the address bar System restore not working of Firexox it used Yahoo to run the search instead of Google which I had set as my default I hate Yahoo with a passion Anyway I tried for quite a while to find a way to change it back and couldn't so I finally decided to do a system restore to System restore not working get back to a point before the update When I ran system restore it didn't complete and I got the following message System restore did not complete successfully Your computer's system files and settings were not changed Details System restore failed to extract the file C from the restore point An unspecified error occurred during system restore x ffff You can try system restore again and choose a different restore point If you continue to see this error you can try an advanced recovery method For more information see What is Recovery I declined the idea of an advanced recovery method as it would lose a lot of the stuff I have on at worst and cause me a lot of work at best getting it back to the way I want it So I tried system restore again with a different date and got the same result I tried all the dates in system restore and they all produced this same message I then ran check disk which didn't find any problems but I tried another restore anyway and got the same message Am I right in assuming that my system restore has been corrupted in some way and if so can I restore system restore By the way I also ran a deep virus check and found nothing my system is clean Any idea how I can get system restore working again and as a bonus does anyone know how to reset Google as my search option in the address bar

Can you make a new System Restore point and then immediately restore to it?

There are a lot of posts here lately about SR not working or not working properly, but I haven't kept up with the solutions, if any.

To Add,

I've Also Realized That On The Bottom Taskbar (Windows 7) I Can't Move The Any Icons To The Very Left Unless The Program's Open If That Helps.
