Black screen & no log in/black screen in Safe Mode too

Q: Black screen & no log in/black screen in Safe Mode too

Hi there,

Am using a Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP. It'd been running ridiculously slowly recently so I started an AVG scan and AVG immediately threw up a file, which I then deleted, then I got a "fatal error" message flash up. Since then I havent been able to get to the log in screen, it merely goes to the black screen with cursor, and Safe Mode is just a black screen with Safe Mode in each corner. Ctrl Alt Del also doesnt work in Safe Mode for some reason, and I have no CD. Ho ho.

Anything I can do to fix this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Black Screen During WIN 7 POST , Black Screen Even In Safe Mode

What other graphics adapter choices are available in BIOS setup? If you choose Switchable is there software on the Lenovo site for your model that's needed? Are you using the Display adapter software from there?

Have you tested your HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a full Disk Check on a single disk partition you create?

Then work through the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums including trying an alternate install method (disk><flash stick) with new media. These steps overcome almost all install failures, so you'll be reasonably sure the problem is hardware or BIOS settings if nothing works. But don't skip any steps.

Try Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview to see if there's any difference with a more modern OS install. It's already a very polished OS and worth testing this.

Windows appears to load normally until reaching the logon screen at which point 2 quick cmd windows flash on the screen and i'm left with a cursor and a plain blue screen.

No access to task manager through ctrl+alt+del.

I was thinking it's a video card problem until i plugged in an external monitor and saw a windows error box pop up saying that the program running requires that you not be on battery power.

Pulled the drive and scanned with avast and malwarebytes which found nothing.

Inserted Vista DVD but the repair function is only able to find the HP Restore partition and is unable to locate any backups.

The system runs "mini XP" from Hirens Boot without a problem, but no diagnostics that i ran have been able to find any issues...

I received the following error message when I attempted to restart my computer:

C0000218 Unknown Hard Error

When I restarted after the blue screen it went into a check disk but would not finish the scan.

I have tried to start the computer in safe mode with internet connection and after a few minutes the screen goes black. I've tried to start it using last known configuration and the screen goes black. Everything I try ~ the screen goes black.

A:Blue screen & now won't start in safe mode, screen goes black

I'm writing from my husband's laptop because my desktop is completely dead.

We were out of town for several days and when we returned my desktop was running very slow so I attempted to restart it. It locked up, I pressed/held the power button and when it restarted it attempted to run a disk check. The disk check locked up and I had to press/hold the power button again. When it restarted I got a blue screen ~ stop: C0000218 unknown hard error.

Sometimes when I attempt to restart it I get: checking file system on C:
file system = NTFS

When I attempt to restart it in safe mode, safe mode with networking or starting in last known good configuration I get . . .

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ . . . (various items)

Now it won't start, not even in safe mode. Everything I try ~ I just get a black screen.

** I just tried to restart AGAIN and it ran disk scan, said it had completed disk scan and would restart, the screen went black when it attempted to restart and the screen is still black and it won't restart.

What can I do to get my computer back?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Just swapped out a Radeon 7000 for a GeForce tx 5200. Mid way through the auto detect hardware, the screen went black. Now it is always black unless I start in safe mode, in which case it is fine.

I have tried installing new drivers. Still black iscreen in normal xp and working correctly in safe mode.

Any ideas?

A:xp black screen unless in safe mode

When Windows will start in Safe Mode only, it's almost always because of a device or driver issue/compatibility. For some reason your system does not seem to like GeForce graphics hardware so you'll have to put the Radeon back. If you want to upgrade, in view of your problem it would be wise to stick with Radeon cards.

I am troubleshooting a problem long distance (I'm in the US, the laptop is in the Philippines). This problem just began after a normal shut down and restart a couple hours later.

The computer, on start up, goes past the splash page but then goes to a black screen with just the cursor. When I have them press f8 in order to get into safe mode the advance options page appears and worked once (I had them do a scan disk and repair) but now the cursor disappears and the arrows won't move the highlight bar so it won't go into Safe Mode. They do not have the installation discs.

So, Windows won't start and Safe Mode can't be accessed and there are no start up discs. Another laptop with Windows is available. Can that laptop create a repair disc that will work? Can Windows be reloaded that way, if necessary?

A:Black Screen/No Safe Mode

I would give this a try and hope for the best

If you create a recovery DVD, you may be able to boot to recovery options
Create Recovery DVD

The Vista recovery disk is used to boot Vista when it won't boot - to run Startup Repair, System Restore, access a Command Line, Recover using a Vista Backup Image, etc.
System Recovery Options

If Vista will not start now, boot the Recovery CD to run Startup Repair which automates System Restore as well as numerous other tests including System File Checker which can repair system files which are not corrupted beyond repair.

If Vista still will not start, try booting into Safe Mode to run sfc /scannow to repair System files.
Special Thanks Given to Seven Forums.

Below is a bulletin distributed by MS to explain the start up procedure when Windows will not boot.
Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair is located on the System Recovery Options menu, which is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If your computer has preinstalled recovery options, it might also be stored on your computer's hard disk. For more information, see Startup Repair: frequently asked questions and What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista? If your computer does not include Startup Repair, your computer manufacturer might have customized or replaced the tool. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.Change restart settings in safe mode. If your computer is stuck in a loop where Windows fails, attempts to restart, and then fails again repeatedly, restart your computer in safe mode and select the Disable automatic restart on system failure checkbox. For more information, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).Reinstall. If no other options have solved the problem, and you are sure that your computer's hardware is functioning normally, you might need to reinstall Windows. A custom (clean) installation of Windows will permanently delete all of the files on your computer and reinstall Windows, so only use this option if all other recovery options have been unsuccessful. After the installation, you will need to reinstall your programs and restore your files from backup copies. For more information, see Installing and reinstalling Windows**.

in msconfig I made the pc to boost in safe mode every time. But when i boost my pc, the monitor is completely black all the time. I hear the fan start running, but the monitor is black from the start. No motherboard logos, no bios, nothing.

I think it might be a problem with safe mode communicating with my monitor or graphics card. My friend suggested my motherboard somehow fried.

Appreciate any help, thanks!

p.s. I'm running on Windows 7, Nvidia GTX970 (or similar)

A:Black screen in safe mode

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Can you provide more information about the PC itself .. make and model for example?
If it is a self / customer build, what is the make and model of the motherboard, CPU, ram, graphics card, hard drives, power supply etc?

I assume everything was working OK until you made the change to the config file?

If you are not getting any display, not even seeing any boot / BIOS info then I would suspect a hardware issue as no drivers are loaded until Windows loads.

My old secondary machine is starting to show early signs of death.

It had restarted itself sometime during the night, and in the morning I've found it showing a black screen with only the windows cursor showing (WinXP pro. SP2 was applied).

I've restarted it and got the same result. Windows looks like it is loading fine, and everything goes smoothly until we get to the log in prompt. It just doesn't appear.

I've tried restarting it in safe mode to analyze the problem, but I can't. It restarts itself while loading the files.

I've tried last good known configuration, and failed. Got as far as I did with normal configuration, only instead of waiting for a non appearing box, I got an error message saying some files are missing, and an auto restart.

I'm really lost. Any helpful pointers would be appreciated.

Something has likely gone wrong with your display drivers. Try re-installing them in safe mode either from the website of your computer manufacturer or the disks that came with your computer.

Hello all
First time poster with problem after peforming sys restore on win7 pro 64bit.
Was troubleshooting a problem w/taskbar not staying hidden, tried to restore back 24hrs to when a java update occured. Restore seemed to proceed normally, but upon restart, it boots normally to just before the login screen would appear, then the screen goes black and all that is visible is the cursor , which I can still move.
But that's as far as it gets. Trying to boot in safe mode, or repair mode ends exact same way - can't boot in to try anything
Any ideas??

Hello CliffordJ. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, correct? Many MSE users running Vista (but not all) suffered black screen after login following installation of Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - (KB3140527), released about a month ago. In fact there is already a thread here: The posters there disabled MSE 4.9 in Safe Mode by unticking a brand-new setting in the UI (Administrator > Turn on this app). Another method of escaping this situation would be to restore your system to a point before the update was installed, then hide the update in Windows Update. That would allow you to resume using MSE 4.8 if you wish.
I am extremely curious why this happens to many but not all MSE users running Vista. If more advanced forum members ask you for further information, I hope you will cooperate. Yesterday my Vista computer ran its battery all the way down and experienced a forced shut-down because of it After I plugged it into the power line and turned it back on it seemed to load normally until I type in my password and hit 'enter' After that the quot welcome quot screen shows a quot loading of mode, death log-in after No black safe screen quot symbol for about seconds then everything is black There isn't even a cursor The dreaded Black Screen of Death without even the task manager or quot my computer quot showing up Nothing is on the screen I'm running Windows Vista version SP I have avast antivirus set to automatically scan update daily Computer HP Pavilion 'Entertainment PC' laptop I believe it has GB ram but it might be GB I have never had the bsod on this laptop before I purchased it almost exactly year ago Safe mode also has the BSOD I can run safe mode with command prompt I can't start task manager after hitting ctrl - alt No safe mode, black screen of death after log-in - delete I tried running system restore with the rstrui exe command in safe mode and nothing comes up I also tried the following chain of commands as detailed here http www computing net answers win in html type c Enter type cd Enter type copy C Windows explorer exe C Windows System dllcache Enter or type copy C Windows System dllcache explorer exe C Windows Enter I don't know what else to do and I don't want to make things worse I've searched the forums and can't find anyone else with such a severe case of bsod - I literally can't run anything except safe mode with command prompt and even that seems dicey Thanks for reading and helping

A:Black screen on startup, Can't go into safe mode because have SSD

The system should be able to boot to SafeMode even if it has an SSD.
You can't use the F8 method in W8/8.1/10 - it doesn't work
Rather restart the system while holding down the Shift key - that should get you to the diagnostics screen in Windows
From there you can try many different things.
You could also download install media for W10 and boot from that to see if you can repair the system.
If it doesn't work, then we also have to wonder about the hard drive.
Please run these free diagnostics:
If you can't get into Windows, then there's not much else to do short of a wipe and reinstall of Windows.
I've had black screen issues with other Asus systems (particularly the G20AJ) and the "fix" there is to delete the display adapters in Device Manager (while in Safe Mode)
That makes the system boot so you can see/use the Desktop in normal mode.

A:safe mode, black external screen

The advice is simple, get the laptop screen replaced. External monitor won't work in safe mode anyway because in safe mode Windows only loads a basic graphics driver (instead of the manufacturer's driver) which doesn't support two separate displays.message edited by phil22

I have run Combofix and Malwarebytes on the machine that the bad drive is attached to, but neither program found anything.  The KBSERVICE.SHUTDOWN file has a modified date very similar to the time that the computer first had the problem.

So I'm basically computer illiterate and I'm not sure where exactly this should go because it might not be a Vista issue but (lots of rambling short) I could use some help.

My eight year old laptop is still running Vista, and recently started having this issue. After going through all the normal boot up screens and sequences, but after the login screen it opens on a black screen, but my cursor is still active. There's nothing to click on, but ctrl alt del works, and when I start the task manager it works, but shows nothing is on. However, when I boot up in safe mode everything is there. All my icons and background and stuff.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated, even if it's just telling me where this should actually go.

When I try to start up, I get stuck on the black screen that says "windows cannot start up", and gives me the following options; start windows normally, last known good configuration, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt. I've tried all of these and it still comes back to the black screen.

This started when I was changing the startup list of programs and deleting some entries using CCleaner, then rebooted.

The first few times I got the black screen, I was able to go into safe mode and do a system restore. But then I would reboot and end up back at the black screen. After doing the restore three times, it's now just stuck on the black screen. I can't get into safe mode or boot up at all.

What do I do to boot up and fix whatever problems I created?

After a lot (I think it was loaded correctly) of .sys files my screen froze and after 3 seconds some weird blue dots appeared and (Left upper corner. Every dot was like 10x30 pixels) after some more seconds my screen turned black. No cursor, no login screen. How can I log in to the safe mode?!

Hello ericberard,

You?re having a problem with the computer going to a black screen.

First test the hardware.

Turn off the computer

As you power it back on, tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.

Once the screen loads run the startup test.

If this is windows 7 and the startup test pass.

Power back off the computer.

As you power it back on, tap the F8 key. This will load Advanced Boot Options.

Select Last Known Good Configuration.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

My dad has an E-machines desktop with Windows XP SP2... he mentioned he'd updated it with service pack 3. This morning I installed a game, but it said files were corrupted and to re-install. It wouldn't uninstall, so I rebooted.
It brought up the black screen with 5 options -- Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ Networking, etc.

"Safe Mode" starts, but stops at windows/system32/drivers/agpCPQ.sys and freezes forever.

Last Good Configuration Settings/Start Windows normally leads back to the black screen.
... with a quick flash of what appears to be the blue screen of death?
I saw on a few posts, it may be a BIOS problem? I'm unable to download anything straight to the computer, obviously, and it was suggested the hard-drive may be "kaput."
Thanks in advance for,

Try running chkdsk from the Recovery Console. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive, and then restart the computer. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.Type: chkdsk /rIt's important to have a space before the "/".To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Hello I am having a problem with my computer which it seems is relatively common but doesn't have any straightforward solution because it could stem from a variety of causes PROBLEM My Windows Asus laptop shows me the typical Load Black on Startup, Mode Can't Safe Screen startup sequence Win logo takes longer than normal then just gives me a black screen with a cursor on the login screen The cursor works fine and actually has my preferred non-default mouse sensitivity The problem is Black Screen on Startup, Can't Load Safe Mode the rest of the computer isn't working Things I've tried -ctrl alt delete on the black screen does nothing -booting in safe mode gives me a black screen with a working cursor as before -ditto for safe mode with command prompt Here I'm trying to run sfc scannow to see if it repairs something This is a solution I found via some Googling Other solutions I've Black Screen on Startup, Can't Load Safe Mode seen suggested which won't work for me -Asus has a system recovery function which was working fine but it wants to delete one or both of my HD partitions This is simply not an option likewise with restoring to factory settings I spent like hours Black Screen on Startup, Can't Load Safe Mode playing Skyrim in the past couple days and I would just be devastated without that save file -One internet tech whiz talks about how he just whipped out the HD and attached it to another computer from which he was able to scan save data or whatever This is a laptop that doesn't work -I don't have any recovery disks lying around and I don't have burnable CDs on hand -I do have a flash drive which I could use but the solutions I've seen involving flash drives are mainly based on virus removal I really am not sure if this is a virus I've had problems recently with deteriorating battery life which led to some accidental shutdowns due to power running out I think I may have hardware complications due to this but I don't know anything so feel free to tell me I'm wrong Relevant specs Asus G VW Intel Core i - QM Nvidia GeForce GTX M --- have had problems in the past with video driver repairing and then recovering That's what I thought this was at first but it didn't recover GB RAM IIRC HD is two partitions of GB each I believe The C drive is full almost to overflowing the D drive is nearly empty except for a couple folders of a TV show I would be willing to wipe Drive D The laptop has been carried around in a backpack used in a variety of places exposed to steam from being in the same room as a shower occasionally run out of power unexpectedly every once in a while due to battery deterioration I've had it for a year so it's seen some use I open it regularly to clean the fans although I don't do anything special just wipe down the filters which can get some dust on them I have noticed a loose piece of aluminum or something was bouncing around detached in there last time I opened it but it didn't come out easily so I let it stay rather than poking my important computer parts All help is REALLY appreciated here I would love to be able to get back to Skyrim ASAP Thanks

A:Black Screen on Startup, Can't Load Safe Mode

After some messing around, the computer has started a CHKDSK. Right now I'm getting a lot of lines saying "File record segment #### is unreadable." Is this a hardware issue or can it be fixed by the computer itself? If it's a hardware issue on the C drive, am I right to assume moving my files to the (relatively unused) D drive won't solve the problem because my OS is on C? Will System Restore/ restoring to factory settings on C solve the problem?
As a side note, it turns out Skyrim saves are on the Steam Cloud so it really doesn't matter if they get deleted. I'd still like to salvage my data if I can.

I have have screen/Safe - Mode Scandisk hanging Black been having issues with my dual boot Win Scandisk - Black screen/Safe Mode hanging amp XP SP SB ASUS P P Deluxe build system freezing black screen on cold boot failed OC Win restore points being deleted by XP and I made the following adjustments updated the BIOS to v and made the required registry adjustments in XP for the restore point issue which worked Now when I try to do a scandisk in Win it hangs after the reboot and I get a black screen Also when I try to go into Safe Mode with a command prompt I see that Windows is loading files then it hangs with the files listed on the screen At this point Win no longer boots and when I used the Repair Disk and the OS DVD to get into the Repair Console Win was not listed so I could not locate any of my restore points I restored a recent system image and it seems to working now with the restore points there again One other note I upgraded the BIOS before I read where I had to make that my currrent BIOS was in its quot failsafe default settings quot Is this going to be a problem going forward I would greatly appreciate for any help

A:Scandisk - Black screen/Safe Mode hanging

If your reimage boots and runs fine, then there should be no problem with BIOS settings at default. You would worry about the SATA controller mode if either OS wouldn't start up as a result.

When Win7 cannot be detected by WinRE try opening a Command Line to run bootrec.exe /fixmbr and bootrec.exe /fixboot to see if it will show the OS after a reboot. While these commands are automated along with all others in Startup Repair, it sometimes takes running them to jumpstart Win7 to appear in list.

A:black screen after login & safe mode also slow

Hello and welcome herschelle now if you can get safe mode at all I would run these at very least < use the /f option in Option 2 ifnecessary
It does however sound very much like the machine has malware on it so one thing you could do if you have access to another machine is to use this < this will run from power up and scan for malware without the need for Windows to be running - that is because it is a bootable program in it's own right. You can make a disk or USB stick to boot from - you will of course need to set the BIOS boot sequence to that particular device disk or stick.

Hello all my BSOD problems are thankfully a thing of the past mode Black screen with cursor, safe works now Black screen with cursor, safe mode works However I have a new issue that has been quite confusing to me When I log in to Windows normally I m presented with a black screen and Black screen with cursor, safe mode works a cursor Through findings of my own I ve found that it s because windows explorer is failing to launch Upon trying to start it by opening the task manager via CTRL SHIFT ESC and opening a new task I m presented with an error code that tells me windows explorer failed to launch I believe the code was something like x I m currently at work and don t remember it exactly off the top of my head So I attempted to restart in safe mode and that worked perfectly fine I ran my virus scanner Kaspersky Internet Security and found no threats I then attempted a system restore and that failed to complete for an unknown reason The next time I tried logging in to windows normally it gave me the black screen again After some frustration I gave up on trying to fix it for a while and shut the computer down After turning it on however I was able to open windows explorer manually through the same method I mentioned earlier and it actually opened this time I ran the sfc scan through the administrator s privilege command prompt and was told that there were files that were corrupted but could not be repaired I don t have a windows CD and am not sure where to go from here Should I start my computer on safe mode with networking and upload the CBS log file to this thread Thanks in advance for any and all help Edit I forgot to mention that when my computer successfully opened windows explorer any window that required internet access didn t open correctly For example Mozilla would open but the window wouldn t appear The same thing happened with the Battle net program nbsp

A:Black screen with cursor, safe mode works

Here is the CBS log I mentioned in the OP. Not sure which information is relevant, but I had to trim most of the document and left just the most recent stuff from the very bottom.

Another note is that upon starting in safe mode, I received a message saying that System Restore did not work, and that an unexpected error occurred while the computer was attempting the restore.

Hi TechGuys and Gals,

Everything was as normal with my Win7 PC yesterday. Late in the afternoon I walked away from it, screen saver came on, and when I returned, the screen was black. I did a system shut down with the power button for the night.

This morning, I turned it back on. I can get to the logon page, login, and then it goes black with NO cursor. I try to get to Task Manager but no go. I F8'd so I could open in safe mode, but that went to black just the same.

The only thing I did 2 days ago was run a short .exe that was a fix for a bug in the Neat company software I use. I can only think that the screensaver caused this.

Anyhow, does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thank you!

I decided to start a different topic because an earlier issue became something else. Earlier I was experiencing problems with thumbnails being mixed up and a system restore was suggested.
Before the system restore I also followed a guide which detailed specific Windows updates to uninstall (something to do with tracking software).
It's worth mentioning that I've been able to restart normally after uninstalling certain tracking-related things.
After attempting a system restore I got stuck on a black screen with an active cursor. I can't get into safe mode and nothing in the repair options seems to be helping. I don't have a Windows 7 CD.

Last week my laptop had trouble starting up, it had a problem with atidvag.dll if I recall. I wasn't sure what to do but I got lucky and after a few attempts in managed to boot. Now however it doesn't even get to the point where it could tell me what is wrong, no Windows logo. Just straight in black screen with a cursor in the top left. F2 will take me to BIOS (if I am quick), but no other keys work. Booted onto installation media to try startup repair, no joy, rollback also no joy, tried using command line following the instructions here to force a boot into safe mode but no joy.

I am out of ideas, so any assistance would be appreciated.

A:Black Screen and Cursor. No safe mode access.

I hope you can get it going...when you do here are some options to get to safe mode

I think because of the change in bios or the way it boots up you cannot hit F8 fast enough to get safe mode.
Here is an option for a dual mode and normal.
Safe Mode - Add to Windows Boot Manager in Windows 8

Also if you are already in windows get to msconfig then select boot and check safe mode startup.

Just a couple of ideas that might be of some use at some point.

My windows xp screen would turn black when i boot. It happens right before the blue welcome screen.
safe mode and safe mode with command prompt works. when i try safe mode with networking, it loads the system files but after that, there would be weird symbols and colors blinking.
i also replaced the hal.dll with the one on the windows xp cd when i got hal.dll is missing/corrupt message before. Maybe that could be the problem?

A:Windows XP black screen and safe mode error

Mine did this when the desktop resolution was higher than what my monitor would support. My LCD would go blank (black) and I would see nothing. The computer seemed to be running in the background however. Have you tried adjusting your video settings via Safe Mode and starting with something like 1024x768?

It may help if you let us know what type of Video Card you have, what type of monitor etc.. I notice you haven't filled out your system information in your profile.. this may be a good opportunity, as it would give a bit more information to use while we try to think of things to try.

Today, I wanted to test my PSU because it's making strange noises lately under load. So to exclude that my graphics card had anything to do with it, I went into safe mode but when I did that I discovered it ain't working anymore.. All I get is a black screen and if I move my mouse, I can see the pointer on the screen along with the "Safe Mode" text in the corners "Veilige Modus" in dutch. I tried CTRL + ALT +DEL but none of the combo's bring up something.

Can someone help me out?

Here are some pictures:

Thanks in advance

A:Safe mode gives black screen with mouse pointer

Possible the noise is either coming from PSU or Graphics card, possible fan. Anything done just before this happened, installed a driver update, windows update or hardware. Could be driver issue with Video card, conflict and or corrupted system files.

Have Windows 8.1 Pro disc or was it preinstalled or a USB Recovery drive or disc image backup ? Was the PSU being dead already would not of started, but still can have issue, leaning towards Video card hardware or drivers.

I seem to be having the very common problem of a black screen with just a moving cursor. I have tried Safe Mode, Last Good Configuration, and every other option in the F8 menu, but always just the black screen.
I have brought it to a computer shop, where they told me to re-install everything. This is not an option now. I want to make sure that I have tried everything to get my data back, before even thinking about re-installing.
I read about FRST64 and wondered how to continue, because obviously I do not understand anything about logs, and I don't know if this FRST64 can fix it on it's own, or just scans for problems. And if it just scans, then what do I do with that?
Some guidance would be very much appreciated.

A:Black screen - moving cursor - no safe mode

If you can't boot into Windows you can't run FRST64, so that is not an option. This problem is pretty common, unfortunately it could be caused by one of several reasons, hardware (ex. RAM), software (windows or driver/s), or an infection. Just to set your mind at ease, you can use a program like Ubuntu to recover your data.  To do this use the instructions below. Please download Ubuntu, you will need to burn this to a CD in order to make a bootable disc.   To burn a ISO file to a CD or DVD please downlaod ImgBurn and install it. Insert blank CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.  Click on the Browse for a file icon:  Locate the ISO file you want to burn, and click on the Open button. Click on the blue arrow to start burning the bootable CD.  Please note:  In order to boot from this disc you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS to make the CD/DVD-ROM the first device in the boot order, and the hdd the second device. At HowToGeek there is a good tutorial for using Ubuntu to recover data from a hdd. What is the Make and model of this computer? One thing which we can do is to do a repair installation of Windows 7.  ***Edit:  Please excuse the duplicated instructions for burning a disc.  Both set of instructions contain this information.*** Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation. A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc. If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.   Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.  Part A, Steps 1a - 6a The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc. 1a)  To burn a ISO file to a DVD please download ImgBurn and install it. 2a)  Insert a blank DVD into your CD/DVD drive tray, and then close the tray. 3a)  Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.  4a)  Click on the Browse for a file icon:  5a)  Locate the ISO file you want to burn, and click on the Open button. 6a)  Click on the blue arrow to start burning the bootable DVD.   Please note:  In order to boot from this DVD you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.  Part B, Steps 1b - 10b 1b)  Place the installation disc in the tray of the CD/DVD drive, close the tray and restart the computer. 2b)  You will be prompted to press any key to start the installation, I find the space bar handy. At this point the setup process will load files, this will take several minutes. 3b)  You will now need to choose the  Language, Time, currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use. After this is done click on Next.  4b)  Click on the Repair your computer link at the bottom-left of the Install Windows window. This link will begin the Windows 7 System Recovery Options.  5b)  System Recovery Options will now search your hard drive(s) for any Windows 7 installations.  This will take several minutes. No participation is required on your part at this time, wait till it has finished and the next window opens.  6b)  Choose the Windows 7 installation that you'd like to perform the Startup Repair on, then click on Next  7b)  Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.  ... A:Black screen on startup, Safe Mode doesn't help?

Really hard to say -- is it keeping the time and date correctly?

Once in normal mode -- is the screen resolution normal?

You may need to update the display drivers.

It's an old computer and it's possible the CMOS battery has died and the CMOS settings are corrupt.

I would change the batttery on the motherboard for starters.

You may also need to to ram and hard drive diagnostics.

Sometimes the event viewer can provide some clues on recent errors.

Run eventvwr.msc and look at the system log in particular.

I recently came home to my computer off and when I in mode regular Screen start-up Black on and safe went to turn it back on it started up with a black screen after the windows logo with just the cursor available Things like ctrl-alt-delete did nothing Black Screen on start-up in regular and safe mode so I tried booting up Black Screen on start-up in regular and safe mode in safe mode which ended up with same black screen and cursor I then went to search the internet for possible fixes and have done verified the following Used boot CD and ran Start-up Black Screen on start-up in regular and safe mode repair told me to remove any mp players or USB devices and try starting again didn't work nothing was connected in the first place The start-up repair log appears to identify no problems with the system It's not a hardware issue the drive itself has been checked on another computer and I've already used a new drive and installed a new copy of windows using the same computer Not a virus issue scanned the drive for viruses and did a chkdsk on it neither of which turned up anything Unfortunately there are no restore points saved so I can't just revert to an older profile Since I can access the drive on another computer is there any program I could run to try and fix the problem This seems to be the only thing that hasn't been covered in other topics similar to this one which I've found online This is my last resort so any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated Thanks

Did you take the cover off and make sure all cables are connected, make sure that your RAM is seated properly. Just anything that might be loose. From what you say, the HDD seems to be OK. It would seem that making sure everything is connected OK would be the next step. Let us know.

Ello folk's
I just wanna pick your brain's a bit as i have this issue that has pickled me for a while now. Since i switched from AMD to Nvidia i have had a 2 inch black border around the display while in the bios and safe mode. When no display driver is installed too.
While searching online i've not managed to find any solution to it and the only suggestions were update bios(done).
Someone else on the EVGA forums was adamant that it was due to the scaling options of my monitor.
I have checked the scaling options and none have any effect on the black border which i expected to be the case as it's only happend since i switched to Nvidia. When i had my HD6950 the screen was as it should be...
Any input is much appreciated as always

A:XP reboots in safe mode only; black screen all other times

Go into safe mode, go to device manager look for red or yellow flags.
The last thing you installed will probably have to be removed, thats
usually the case. Your pc didnt like something you installed, maybe the
wrong driver, or a issue with usb.

hi you should have a recovery partition this should help
Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager if Windows Vista is not accessible
If the PC cannot launch into Windows, it may still be possible to use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the computer to its original operating condition by first pressing the Power button to start the PC, and then pressing the F11 key to start the HP Recovery Manager. NOTE: Depending on the BIOS version, your computer may display multiple prompts during startup including F11 to start System Recovery. Pressing the F11 key on a computer with an HP factory image will start System Recovery even if the prompt is not displayed

Working on this one for a friend.

Vista home sp2

It will boot into safe mode and work fine. reboot to normal and we get the login screen once clicked it will start loading into windows but goes to a black screen with the pointer showing and would give an error on loading nvcpl.dll, I have used safe mode to turn off the Nvidia control panel on startup but now just get a black screen and pointer. I can Cnt Alt Del and get to the Lock, switch user, task manager, screen.

No signs of malware or virus.

Kind of stumped on this one.

A:Black Screen With pointer Boot to safe mode fine

First step would be to download and install the latest video driver from the nvidia website. If that doesn't work we'll try a clean boot using msconfig.

Hopefully I am in the right place and apologies if not as I am a newbie to any kind of forum posting I have researched my problem here and found similar situations but nothing that quite fits or has helped Here is Restore No 8.1 after Screen System Mode Black Safe Windows all the information that I have and the events that have led up to the black screen problem Lenovo S p Touch Laptop running Windows which was installed already on computer A few weeks ago I upgraded to Windows however it caused some issues with emails power options etc that I didn't have time to figure out so after about week I decided to go back to Windows thinking I would wait a few months and try Black Screen after System Restore No Safe Mode Windows 8.1 again Everything seemed to be running fine at that point except that my laptop would still not wake up when opening top I did install updates to drivers and Windows critical updates after moving back to with no obvious issues Until I received an email that my Outlook emails would not work properly in Windows Live in a couple weeks unless I installed a certain update so of course I installed the update After that every email I received was from an Unknown Sender even after I allowed them Because I couldn't find an easy fix for this I decided to restore my computer back to before this update was installed and that's where everything went wonky After initializing the system restore the computer said it was working and it may take awhile I got busy and after a couple hours looked at the computer and it was just a black screen Pushing any keys did not change a thing so I forced a shut down Upon restart the Lenovo name appears with the circle of spinning dots then nothing I can move the cursor and see it along with a small twirling blue circle but clicking anywhere on the screen does nothing I have tried unplugging the computer removing battery removing media in cd holder pressing Shift on restart F shift and F FN and F along with F I have forced shut down at least times hoping that a system recovery or something would pop up and CTRL ALT DEL does absolutely nothing I should also mention that I do not have any type of recovery or installation disk but I did back up my files on external hard drive before installing Windows so I'm not too concerned about losing files Any help is greatly appreciated as I am at a complete loss Please note that I am not too computer savvy but can follow directions as long as you use dummy language and not technical computer terms

A:Black Screen after System Restore No Safe Mode Windows 8.1

In Windows 8, 8.1, or 10, you have to hold down the shift key while clicking Restart to get to the Troubleshooting and then Advanced Startup options which includes System Restore.
If you are lucky enough to have the power icon on the Welcome screen its not too hard.  If it isn't there, its no fun at all.....
Running a normal system restore (not from the Advanced startup) gives malware the ability to reinfect you during the reboot process.  In the advanced startup, you are running a mini-Windows with none of the usual junk loaded.

I have an HP desktop e9200z with Windows 7 Home Premium. I was on the internet, when my computer rebooted itself and took me to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upperhand lefthand corner. It occurs before the welcome to windows screen. I can get into BIOS and the recovery manager, but I cannot get into safemode. I set the BIOS to the default settings by hitting f5. I also ran a repair, but it says it cannot successfully repair the system. Not sure if this matters, but I noticed this in the log

Problem Signature 07: NoOSInstalled

I tried doing a restore, but I keep getting the black screen with cursor. Is there anything I can do other than reinstalling to factory settings? I read that it could be a master boot record issue, but where in the recovery manager can i fix that? thanks!

This is my wife's laptop. The problem started recently, about a week ago When she starts the laptop, often (but not always) there is the hp logo, and then the screen goes black. It does not always happen, and sometimes it happens when the laptop has not been used for a few hours.

The screen seems to wrok okay in safe mode, bit has problems in regular mode. The laptop is about 4 years old, came with Vista, but now has Windows 7 premium home edition. I reinstalled windows 7, but the problem has not been resolved.

Grateful for your advice. Should this laptop be discarded? Repairs are quite expensive in Switzerland, and rather than spend good money on an old laptop, I would prefer getting a new one, if an easy solution can not be found. HP G60-235DX Windows 7 (32 bit), 3GB RAM, plenty of free HD space.

Many thanks.

I have been going crazy with these types of issues. Windows 7 boots to a black screen with a mouse cursor that I can move.  However I cannot boot into windows normally or in safe mode .  Things I have tried that have been unsuccessful are.

Sytem repair from OS disk
System restore (no restore points)
Virus scans from Hirems boot disk
Fix Boot Fix MBR
Last known Good Configuration
Command prompt from os disk and checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon  Shell value = Explorer.exe  and userinit value = C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe
Mawarebytes PE bootdisk
I'm sure I'm missing other things I have tried.   The only time I have been able to resolve these without reimaging is when there was a restore point.  I really need to figure out what I'm not doing before I end up losing it haha.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
