I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If this happened to me, I'd restore from my last good full system backup.  If you don't have one, I'd consider this a learning experience.  Then save any data you don't want to lose, and try System Restore.  If that doesn't help,
restore your system to factory settings, and reload your software.
 Good luck.

All of a sudden my avi files will not open. Even highlighting them makes windows explorer close randomly. Does anyone have an idea whats wrong?

A:Avi files aren't working anymore

If I need anymore details or something let me know...I will try. Although honestly, I'm not sure what else to say. I can't think of anything specific I could have possibly done to screw it up. I didn't mess with any codecs or anything as far as I can remember. If you can help me, I would really appreciate it.

Hi There,

I have a PC. The computer is not operating like it used to. Wierd things are happening.

The following things (are wierd):

- sometimes (not always) it operates slowly,
- can't update Windows Updates (last time the computer was successfful was October 2010).
- opening files (like Word or Excel) by clicking attachments from e-mail files don't work (e-mail program is MS Outlook).
- I sometimes (again, not always) get a message about Tweeter Monkey not loading (not sure of the name but it is something "monkey").

There are at times other weird things too.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Hello, this can ne a few things, but many canbe malware related first so let's run a couple tools. You did not give your operating system so I will start with what we can run now.Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking How to enter safe mode(XP/Vista)Using the F8 MethodRestart your computer. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. The P2P programs you have installed expose you to risks because of the nature of the P2P file sharing process. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

I suggest you go to add/remove programs and remove all P2P programs!
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 3.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

I recently formatted my hard drive and was in the process of setting up my burner, wireless, and web cam when I got a message saying that they cannot be set up because I needed SP2 or higher.
I went to microsoft/windows and did the download and install. After restarted my PC I can only get 4 bit color and screen resolution can't be set any higher than 600x800.
I did a virus scan and avg found nothing.
Any suggestions?

What are your system specs? Are you running XP? If you are, and only running XP SP1, you are way behind the times... You will have to do a fresh Operating System install all the way to XP Service Pack 3

OK, I have looked for a bit now, and I just can't seem to figure out how to rename certain devices in my network map.

For instance, my Media Extender is named "unknown" and my switch is called "switch"...

Obviously my Computers are the PC names, and that part is fine...

This is a mere personal preference issue I realize, but I will be adding another swtch to my network soon, and another wireless access point this week, so I'd like to be able to easily distinguish all the devices...

My computers all run vista, so I'm not having the XP thing going on... everything is there.... I just want to rename.

I am sure I can rename these, but it just isn't coming to me on how to do it? Any ideas... I'm sure I'mm looking too deeply into this, its probably way too easy, so hopefully someone makes me feel stupid....

things like videos and games aren't going good...they are kinda choppy. i'm using beta 100.59 of the forceware for vista (i hate it, nothing to do.) games go half what they did in xp, idk if its the drivers or what, or if its dx10 thats making these problems. if it is, can i downgrade to dx9?

A:things aren't going good in vista...

how about useing the none beta vista video drivers? i know nvidia has some. and since you don't have a dx10 vid card, you aren't running dx10, but the hightest your card supports, which should be dx9c. i think setting the game settings lower than you have them at will improve proformance. remember, vista is more of a resorce hog than xp, and the games are not written for vista, but to run well in xp. and because of that, imho, your cpu and ram are alittle on the light side. but what is your vista experience rating (remember that 5.9 is the max. i bet its around 3)?

also, are you using the 32bit or 64bit version of vista? even with a 64bit cpu, the 32bit version is going to run alot better than the 64bit version.

To combat some missing icons (specifically, MSI Afterburner) I adjusted the system DPI to 125% then back to 100%. Most everything went back to normal, except two things:

1. Firefox's menu and toolbar font size
2. System message font size

Restarting does nothing. I tried changing to 150% then back to see if that'd work, but now it's even smaller! Programs seem fine, I tested Word and Skyrim. 1920x1080 res if it matters.

How do I fix those issues?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has been covered. I couldn't find any relevant threads, but I might be searching the wrong terms.

EDIT: Looks like the menus for Media Player Classic are tiny, too.

A:Adjusted system DPI, now certain things aren't scaling back right?

Ok, don't know why I didn't try this before, but the settings are tied to the current theme, so switching it fixes the problem.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a desktop PC. I download pictures, and rename them using the rename process in Windows Explorer. When I rename pictures in the folder, they'll have the name like pic (1) pic (2) pic (3) and so on. I can rename pictures until I reach pic (10001). At that point, Explorer no longer automatically increments them. The renaming status bar turns red, and an error message says: "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder". I am however, able to manually enter numbers higher than 10001, so I'm not sure what the error message is referencing.
Is there a registry entry, or environmental variable that I can increase the value to be greater than 10001?

In windows vista, when I wanted to rename files in a folder all I had to do was right click on one file, rename it and click tab to move to the next file to rename. I didn't have to right click every single file, click rename, type the name, press enter and then move on. This has become a huge problem for me in windows 7 and I cannot seem to find an answer of solution to this problem.

I open a folder that has 27 pictures; I want to rename those pictures in a consectutive order, but in the order I want them to be; for example: R2290-01 and I want that exact style to follow through until R2290-27. I am okay with renaming every file by hand, but I want to be able to "TAB" between them and not right click and rename everytime.

HELP ME PLEASE! This is driving me absolutely nuts.

You can't unless you rename them individually. The Explorer will always append a number to your name when you rename several in one strike.

When I rename a file in XP, right click - rename
the extension doesn't change.

i.e. renaming test.text to be .dat becomes test.dat.txt

How can I quickly change the entire name and extension ?
I have been going to DOS to rename it.

A:renaming files in XP

do you have on a right click the option to "open with"? If so...choose .dat association

If not... highlight & then hold down the shift key down & right click & choose "open with"

When I rename a file on my computer, I just have to type in the name only and the extension (file type) is maintained. However, another employee in our office has to actually type in the new name with the extension. I'm thinking they must have something set differently somewhere in Windows XP. Can anyone help?

I would like to know of a program that would let me remove the current name of files in a folder and replace the original filename with a number that represents how many files there are (goes up by one for each file). What's an app I can use that'll do this and how do I do this using that app?

Can any one help me? I try to rename my files/folders and upon typing in the new name I hit enter and the new file name won't appear until after I either close the window and re-open it or I refresh the window. Same thing happens when I right click and create a new folder, the folder won't appear until I refresh and then I name it and have to refresh yet again. This is getting quite annoying.

I don't know if it's a program that I have, a registry key that's corrupt or what. I seem to remember this starting after my computer did it's Automatic Updates, but I don't want to remove the wrong updates/programs/registry keys and mess up my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I have a user who uses a laptop at home to VPN into the network so he can work from home. Everything works fine until he tries to rename a file. His computer gives him the error basically saying he is using invalid characters. He has tried to rename it very simple names (1, test, etc.). He can create folders and copy files into them and delete them but he just can't rename them. As soon as he gets back into the office he is able to rename folders and files using the exact same username and password he is using from home. Any ideas why he can't rename files and folders over the VPN?

Ok, so there are two options: You can either make windows show file extensions like file.exe, or you can have it hide known extensions, like file . What bothers me, is why isn't there an option that hides everything but click to rename it, the extension shows up?

Is this possible?

Alex, I don't believe that I have ever seen that. I firmly believe that the default should be to show file extensions instead of hide them. Big mistake and a great opening for the virus and trojan creators..

Just my opinion..

Greetings, I'm looking for a way to rename files via windows right click shell, a hidden windows setting or power toy, that will allow me to rename two files that already have identical names, but different file extensions, to a new but still identical name, without windows adding in an incremental number in parenthesis to the second file. I know I can just manually remove the added tag by hand however I have about 18,000 files to rename and am trying to cut down the amount of time it takes to do this. For example if I have two files, one is named thisdamnsong.cdg and one is named thisdamnsong.mp3 and I want to change them to thissong.cdg and thissong.mp3 without windows causing thissong (1).mp3 to occur. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There can be many explanations for this, probably most commonly a virus of some sort. Or, there might be a problem within your computer, depending on how everything is connected. If it becomes necessary, you may need to bring it into a repair shop.

OK, so I'll try to keep this as brief as I can,

I have a L4VXA2 motherboard and operate on windows XP SP3. (if that info is needed at all)

Currently, my usb ports have not been recognizing anything I plug into them.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers twice, still nothing works.
When I try and fix it, it keeps telling me the INF is formatted for windows 95 or later (or something like that)

So now, I have downloaded a VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller, extracted the files, everything was going fine, but now the setup wont run! For the first few times I clicked on it, it kept saying "the setup has detected that unInstallShield is in use. Please close uninstall shield and restart setup Error 432". I rebooted the computer and tried again multiple times. Now the error message doesn't even show up.

I have NO idea what to do, please, PLEASE help :'(

They work perfectly in my other computer also running XP.

Why don't they work with this one?

A:DVD-R Disks Aren't Working

I'm using a store brand of DVDRW.Click to expand...

Always buy quality media. Store brands usually aren't. Also, DVDRW media, isn't very reliable. Use DVD-R as you listed in the title of the thread. You can try this, but I don't think it's gonna fix your problem. I think your problem is the media you used.

Go into your Device Manager, and find your drive. Right click on it, and choose "Uninstall". After it uninstalls, reboot, and let Windows detect new hardware, and install new a driver for you.

I have tried to tell people that this is what happens when you use Memorex, Khypermedia, and most store brands of media (mostly any media made in Taiwan. Verbatim is the exception). They record ok, and look ok the first time or two you watch them. But when you go back, to watch them again, they may be unwatchable. When buying blank dvds, look on the package for "Made In Japan". It's usually near the bar code. That's not saying you'll never have problems. But you'll have a lot less problems associated with bad media. Sony, Maxell, and Fuji, are good brands, if you get the ones "Made In Japan" (MIJ). MIJ Fuji discs are getting very hard to find though. Verbatim is the only Taiwan made (MIT) media, you should consider.

If the reinstall of the hardware, through the device manager works, I'd copy your discs over to better media, while you can. If it doesn't, I don't think there's much you can do to save what you've burned. I think most software used to encode and burn dvds, puts the files in a folder, on your hard drive. You may find the files for one burned dvd. If you used the same software to do all the dvds, it uses the same folder and overwrites what's in it, each time you do another dvd. That's why I say you might find files for one dvd you burned.
Good luck!

Does anybody know how to rename a bunch of files in Windows 7 while ignoring the filetypes at the same time? In Windows XP this wasn't a problem, no matter what format the file had, the numbering would continue anyway. In Windows 7 the numbering starts over again when a file has a different filetype format.

For example:

file (1).jpg
file (2).mov
file (3).wma

file (1).jpg
file (1).mov
file (1).wma
file (2).jpg
file (2).mov
file (3).jpg
file (4).jpg

I want the numbering to continue in Windows 7... (NOT have multiple number ones or two's)

A:Renaming folders and files.

After you have made the new folder, guess you have right clicked on it and checked that everything under Properties looks AOK?

Maybe clear the READ ONLY attribute and try again though you shouldn't have to do this really!

You could also try copying another old folder and pasting it onto the appropriate source (C) and try to rename it. Again this is kinda messy and should not be necessary.............

I have enabled everything so that when the song is renamed in the media
library it renames it in the folder as well. The problem is i want a very
subtle difference in the way it renames them and i've tried looking under the
rip music tab and the file name button, but it doesnt allow me to do what i
want to do. This is how it looks:

Artist-Song Name

and i want it to look like this

Artist - Song Name

just that extra space between and after the -
is there anyway to do this?

A:question about renaming files on WMP

I don't think you can do it with WMP but you could use a general file renamer like Rename Master or a tag editor like Mp3/Tag Studio (if they're mp3's).

i have a problem renaming files with long filenames. in fact, it won't even let me delete or copy or cut them.
i think this may be the problem: windows doesn't have a problem with letting me write long filenames. it does have a problem if i try to move these files into another directory (an error message comes up saying that the file name is too long to move). but i think the problem is that it DOES let me rename the folder that the long filename is in, rendering the file inside useless to me. (i don't actually know if this is the problem, i'm too scared to test my theory).

but anyway, i was wondering if there was any way of renaming my file. i've tried downloading a renaming program but that didn't work. is there something i can type into the 'run' thing?

A:problems renaming files

You can try doing it from a command prompt. If the file names are very long (>255), then you masy have better luck using the "command" console rather than the "cmd" one. Rename the files first with old 8.3 DOS names and then rename them from within Windows.

Start by going to Start > Run, and typing:
cmd <Enter>

Navigate to the folder where the files are and use the "ren" command to rename them.

If that doesn't work, try using "command" instead of "cmd" in the Run box.

I have an RCA Lyra MP3 player. When I download an audio file from a website I belong to (I am a paid member, it is not illegal and it's not music) it downloads by a certain name that the website has given it.

I then change the name on my computer and copy the file to my player. When I go to play the file the original name of the file is still there on the display. The name always begins with the name of the website and this player has a very small display so if I don't change the name I will never know what I am listening to.

If I open up the player contents on my computer it shows the filenames that I have given it....but when I play the files I see the original filenames.

This is very frustrating. Can anyone help? Thanks.

If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable.

I know you have to add the file extension at the end (txt, exe, zip, etc.), but my how do I make it so I don't have to add the extension at the end every time?

I've encountered a problem with files seeming to randomly rename themselves...

I have a "fileserver" (just a seperate box with a large sata HD) to store my music on, which I then access accross the network using winamp. The problem is that for some reason the files randomly rename themselves to their MS-DOS equivalent name, eg. Bloodhound Gang.mp3 becomes BLOODH~1.mp3. This obviously causes problems with my playlists as the files now have different names so the tracks get skipped.

Both machines are using XP Pro, and I've tried making all the files read only but this hasn't had much effect.

I'd appreciate any suggestions...

I am no expert, but when it renames files it is using the old file system instead of the Xp 32bit or Win NT file types.

you may need to find out your HD file type and change it. JMHO

Firefox 64 bit (Namoroka 64 bit) keeps renaming my files every time I download them. It adds a (x) suffix to my files, which is very annoying.

Here is how it goes: I download a file, it keeps the original file name. But watch this: I delete the file from the folder it was downloaded to, I download it to the same folder and it renames it to myFile(1). Same for the next times: myFile(2), myFile(3). Remember, the original file is no longer present, yet it renames it like there was some file name conflict, which there isn't. What's more: it does this for all my other files! Keeps adding (x) suffix like there was a conflict.

So why does it keep doing this and how do I fix it? Thanks

Your folders are too deep for windows to handle correctly. I saw the same problem that was created by an end user on my windows 2003 file server. I have several hundred pictures that I recieved from a professional photographer for our school. All of the files have odd extensions such as .56, .86, etc. These numbers are actually part of out 10 digit id numbers. Is there a way to rename the files and keep those numbers? Or change the association of the file? I have tried several different ideas and the only one that works is the assoc command.

assoc .56=jpegfile

But then to do another i have to change the extension

assoc .86=jpegfile

The only problem is that every picture has a different 2 digit extension. Is there a way to select all of the pictures without entering the exact extension?

I have W7 Home Premium and my desktop icons aren't working. I have to reboot to get them to work I use Microsoft Essentials for Virus Protection not Norton.

Any assistance in solving this problem appreciated thanks Dorothy

A:Desktop Icons Aren't Working :(

Did you just install Windows 7? Or, are these icons that have not been used for quite sometime? Try running this Fix It tool from Microsoft. It is used to fix problems with desktop icons, shortcuts, and Windows Update Errors - Common system maintenance tasks. Let us know what happens.

Hope this helps!

Hello all and and as a disclaimer please excuse any and all of my ignorance, I am not at all very good with computers, it even took me a minute to figure out my OS lol! but i have a serious problem: My USB drivers are no longer reading my phones and other devices the message i get is "USB Device Not Recognized", When i click the message and go through the troubleshoot it gets no where. It's like my computer doesn't even realize that the devices and drivers are malfunctioning, also i don't know if it is related but it seems like files, apps and folders are constantly being deleted without my consent and no one else has access to my pc. i suspect foul play hidden in my system. Any help would be very appreciated. thank you so much everyone!

Welcome to the forums!
Have you ran any malware/Virus scans?

I would suggest malwarebytes.

The free version.

I am running a legitimate copy of Windows 8.
After I rebooted my laptop 3 days ago, when I open a program, it would take 3-5 minutes to load or it loads right away and once I click on the program it freezes and stops responding.
I have already ran virus scans, used CCleaner, AdwCleaner, MalwareBytes StartUpLite, ran hardware diagnostics and nothing works.
I ran my computer in safemode and all my programs came up and loaded fast.
By loaded I mean to be able to visually see it(GUI).
When I open something it'll be active in task manager but take forever to show up on my desktop.
This has been happening for 3 days, please help.

A:Programs aren't working correctly.

I would post in malware/virus removal just to make sure.

Yesterday, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. All went good, and I'm fully satisfied with Windows 10, but when I called a friend on Skype, I couldn't hear him at all. Not in my headphones. I searched on Google and saw on a lot of forums that if I unninstal that "VIA HD Audio (Win 10) it will fix my problem, but it didn't.[/B] They're still not working, even after I updated the driver back. I also installed Realtek HD Audio driver, after seeing on other forum, but it still didn't work at all. When I click on the speaker icon, go to playback devices, it's not showing headphones, but only speakers. Do you guys know what I can do ? Do you got any idea? I don't want to go back to Windows 7 just because of this.

This is not your typical quot My modern apps don't work quot post Some of my apps are working fine for instance Edge and Mail Others do not such as the Windows Store Weather Photos etc I've tried all the various tricks to uninstall and re-install these apps but get the same thing The Event Log says that the apps can't be quot activated quot which indicates Universal Apps working aren't Certain some kind of licensing issue perhaps but I haven't found the solution yet This is Windows Enterprise build It's joined to a domain and I strongly suspect that my domain admins have a group policy that Certain Universal Apps aren't working is interfering but I can't be sure They had already disabled Microsoft Accounts and turned off Telemetry via group policy and registry settings which I have countered by forcing these back on and denying update access to those keys I suppose it's possible that this might be affecting the apps as well but it's strange that some apps work and some don't Any suggestions SFC and Dism cleanups report no issues or corruption App re-installs seem to complete fine but the apps still don't work UAC is of course ON

I have the Philips MMS205 which consists of 4 satellite speakers and a subwoofer. My sound card is a Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer. My satellites are properly hooked up to the subwoofer. The line IN on the subwoofer is connected to the line OUT on the computer, and the surround IN is connected to the Rear OUT on the computer. However, the problem is that only ONE of the satelites and the subwoofer are working, the other three satelites are not emitting any sounds. Please reply if you know what is wrong and/or what i can try. Thanks.

A:satellite speakers aren't working

1) Can you try the speakers on another computer? They may be bad.

2) Try the front out to the surround speakers and see if they both work.

This should pin the problem down.

I have Logitech Z506 surround sound speakers for my pc. They worked fine until I put together a new build. Now, only my rear speakers put out sound. I've tested them and configured them properly, but still no good. Anybody know a fix?
