Laptop keys not working

Q: Laptop keys not working

Okay, so yesterday I was dropped off for my first day at Uni and I went into my room to set up my laptop. Somehow (truly a mystery) a single tear fell onto my keyboard, right in the gap below the space bar. Obviously, I thought nothing of it... for about a minute. Then suddenly my keyboard went absolutely crazy. The space bar stopped working and when I tried to type with any other key, weird stuff happened. For example, I would type "B" and instead it would come up as "###O'xnF."

As you can imagine, very weird. I left it for a little bit while I unpacked and when I came back to it, it seemed to have settled down, but some of the keys had stopped working all together. These include the space bar, the z, the s, the shift key, the left alt key etc. Basically, several on the left side of the space bar. I am having to use a USB keyboard but obviously I would rather not have to.

Does anyone know how to fix it, or should I lug it over to the nearest computer repairs place?

Preferred Solution: Laptop keys not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been having problems keeping my touchpad and keyboard functioning after taking my laptop apart. In the first instance, my touchpad stopped working a couple weeks after the dissection. I took the computer back apart, and re-secured the touch pad jack in the motherboard connector, and it worked again.

The second instance, which I havent been able to solve, is the keyboard keys. Certain keys will stop working after some short time after taking apart the computer, usually a couple hours to a couple days.

I have tried readjusting the keyboard jack in the motherboard connector, also have tried turning off the computer and taking out the battery for a while.

Please help

A friend has a laptop (no idea what sort) and phoned me to say the three keys all in a diagonal line 3 e and d did not work. I have loaned him a separate keyboard and that works, but I wonder if anyone has any ideas as to why three keys have stopped working. I will pass on any avice to him that you may have. I have suggested turning the laptop upsidedown to try to dislodge anytng that might be stuck.

Some friend had suggested that it might be a circuit board problem. Do you think that is likely?

A:keys 3 E and D not working on laptop

Keyboard may have gotten wet, or the internal contacts dirty. He should replace the keyboard. I just did one for a HP, it was about $16.00 on E-bay.

can anyone help?

I spilled coffee on my laptop and i cannot log in to windows as the "b" key is in my password and cant get it to work.

i tried cleaning with mets and nothing.

Is there a way i can bypass the log in password in safe mode? to reset the password.

or is there anyhting i can do.

A:keys on laptop not working- help

Replace the keyboard or use a external keyboard.i tried cleaning with mets and nothing.I'm not sure what that (mets) means. Did you pour more liquid into that laptop? Liquids and laptops are a bad idea. Anything that gets into the keyboard will usually end up on the motherboard of the laptop. What make model and country. Here in the USA You can often find a laptop keyboard for $20 US or less. For temporary use or permanent if portability is not needed a USB external keyboard should work.Good LuckRoger

We are just fellow end Users. We can't send out an engineer. You do not give us the model number of your laptop but I sense you are not interested in self-repair. If the project is urgent in the short run I suggest you use an external usb keyboard to get your work done while you wait for HP to respond. Sorry I have no more control over the situation.

A:Some of my laptop keys are not working

hello raj, This is quite common in laptops well it was with mine.

I found out that the problem was cause by crumbs below the keys. but it is really easy to fix. It could also be caused by the key bracket.

place a flat head screwdriver or your finger nail, at the corner of the key, And apply a little upward pressure they key should pop offf.

Have a look for any crumbs ect, wobble the bracket to see if this helps.

To re-apply they key just place it on top of the bracket and push down until you hear a click.

Let me know if this helpde.

After install of RP 8, most of my fn key are not functioning properly or that when pressed they don't show on the screen as it did with 7.

A:fn keys not working on laptop

That is quite weird if assuming you already installed its native application. I found most of my laptops (ASUS, Fujitsu, and Toshiba) have their fn keys just work when the appropriate chipset driver were installed, even before its native fn application is installed, of course lacking the fn animations. Two of them are running Win 8.

Have you tried reinstalling drivers? Who knows it resolves the matter? Just my poor guess.

The Windows Vista section may not be the right place to post this but I don't think it is a hardware issue.

I am running Windows Vista Premium with service pack 1.

The keys 1, q, a and z will not work on the laptop keyboard. They work fine on a separate keyboard when I connect
via USB. They used to work fine - just suddenly stopped working one day.

Any ideas?

If it works with an attached keyboard, but not with the built in one - I'd have to suspect that there's a problem with the built in keyboard. I'd suggest replacing it, or taking it to a shop to have it replaced.;q;a;z-not-working-on-my-laptop/

Hi I noticed that gradually certain keys near each other are now not working on my Dell Inspiron 64OO, which is a couple of years old now....

the keys that arent working are the zero, minus symbol and equal sign on top line, letter p and bracket beside it, semicolon and apostrophe, slash with question mark. So they are related somehow I guess seeing that they are all in a line that runs downward.

I did pop off the letter p key and tried carefully cleaning it and it did work occasionally, but I gave up being patient and just copy and paste now, which is an absolute nuisance. please help if you can!

A:Some keys not working toshiba Laptop

By stopped working you mean some keys don't output anything at all or they give unexpected characters?
If the latter, you can check whether the language input method matches the keyboard layout: control panel → change input methods (for instance, if a french laptop is set to english keyboard layout some keys won't work as expected).

Otherwise, it could be a hardware problem. One way to troubleshoot it is to download and boot from a Linux Live CD and try the keyboard from there (for further assistance with this you can ask for help in the linux forum). If the Keyboard works there, that indicates wrong Windows settings. If the keys don't work there the keyboard might be damaged and needs to be replaced. An external keyboard can be used in the meantime.

So Recently I tried cleaning crumbs and stuff from under my keyboard. I removed it which was pretty simple, and used compressed air on it. When i put the keyboard back on some keys stopped working. Primarily my 2,w,s,x keys stopped working(All of these are diagonally from each other). I didnt know what it was. my sisters bf took a look at it and saw a small dent in the keyboard ribbon cable. So i ordered a new keyboard and was super careful with putting it back on. But the same keys dont work! I tried everything i could think of. The keys do not work at all. If it helps my laptop number or whatever u call it is 15-f337

When you upgraded to XP, the drivers for the keyboard might not have been compatible with the newer version of your OS. I suggest downloading any newer versions of drivers from the manufacturer's website and seeing if that doesn't solve the problem.

The other day some of the keys stopped working, I have not dropped it or spilled anything on it. I turned it and when I tried to go back in to it, it came up with the black BIOS screen. However as the keys were not working it would not let me select anything (i.e safe mode) it times down to open in the already highlighted section which was rum window as normal (or something like that) it then gave a blue screen and said it was doing a crash dump. After this it went back to the black BIOS screen and repeated the whole thing. Its stuck in some sort of loop. I don?t have any disks to reinstall what can I do???

Hello Robwan,

Usually, if just a few keys stop working... it's a bad keyboard. This happens a lot with Gaming Computers, due to the heavy use of certain keys.

If an external keyboard works, I'd consider replacing the onboard keyboard. You can also test using the on-screen keyboard, as well.

A new keyboard can be purchased on ebay or

Hello Sir,

I seem to be having a similar problem. Only the keys, Home, End, Right & Left direction keys arent responding. An external USB keyboard key is working. This led me to believe it could be a hardware issue (moisture etc.) however the new keyboard i order for my vostro 1014 (dell) laptop had the same issue, hence leading me to believe it is a software issue i.e. driver issue.

I have tried updating my driver it tells me its up to date. Have tried uninstalling it and on restart windows reinstalls my driver. I tried going on windows forum (Microsoft) and they were rambling about a possible Hotfix replacement. Please advise and let me know what do i do.

A:keyboard keys not working on HP Pavilion g6 notebook laptop

What system update, windows update, a driver update? This is pretty vague.Could the update be coincidence and the keys are broken? If you boot to safe mode with command prompt try them then.Maybe the keys themselves are damages in which case you need a new or new old stock keyboard. That's what I would do, test the keys in a command prompt window and if they don't work there get a new keyboard.Do you have access to a usb keyboard to see if it's the keys or some weird OS thing?

Hey @Sanjiv1?, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your Compaq Presario CQ57-200tu Notebook and keyboard keys not working correctly. You can resolve this issue by checking the keyboard language.  Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Here is a link to uninstall the keyboard. Restart the computer after uninstalling, it should reinstall automatically. This has helped others. Here is a link to keyboard troubleshooting. I hope something here helps. Thanks.

It could be a virus. But It also could just be your keyboard is bad. You may need to take it to your local repair shop if it. Is a laptop and have them check the keyboard out for you. I really do not think it is a virus.

A:Home Keys on laptop keyboard disabled/not working properly

firstly I would recommend downloading and installing all of the latest drivers for you laptop. especially any chipset and or ones directly related to the keyboard (most laptop keyboards use default windows ones so theres nothing to update, but laptops with hot keys and multimedia keys tend to use their own)

something else you can do is plug in a usb keyboard and test it, if the same keys on a usb keyboard dont work its not hardware related.
simply googling G7 keyboard throws up hundreds of user complaints so its not exactly a first time event theyve known to fail.

Hello ,
I have Dell Inspiron 3543. purchased on august 2015 . Its speaker and some keys of keyboard are not working . I updated all the drivers. I did Laptop's factory restore step. But none worked.
I had shown the issue to few hardware engineers for issue confirmation. They all said It has keyboard and speaker issues. Contact to dell support as one year is not completed.  But Dell support is saying the product is not under warranty and contact dealer.  I contacted dealer. Dealer said we have updated the warranty.
To whom should I contact now? How my issue will get resolved?

Hi Guys,

I am a member of the sevenforums and currently have a win8 laptop so thought I'd sign up here (seems to be the same people behind both forums).

I'm having a little trouble and would really appreciate some feedback.

My Lenovo ideapad z500 had 2 keys (K and I) that stopped working (they worked on the touchscreen) and then after that the delete, 8, and arrow keys topped working. Not sure why.

Before I get the keyboard replaced I'm wondering if it could be something else? There's no water damage and I haven't dropped it so I'm confused. I was told it has to be water damage but maybe 1 drop from the condensation on a glass of water is all I can think that may have affected it.

Would be great for some input on this issue.

A:Laptop Keys Stopped working - Lenovo Ideapad Z500 Win8

I was told it has to be water damage

Not true. In fact, water in the keyboard normally does not cause permanent damage. That is, once the water dries, all works again - most of the time. But that does depend on many variables - type of keyboard membrane, how much water, if just water (no sugars or cream, for example), and how much dust, dirt, oily hair/dander, cigarette smoke, cookie crumbs, etc. are under the keys when the water was spilled. The greater damage generally comes when the water works it way through the keyboard and into the computer's electronics.

I would try a regular PC keyboard first to see what happens. If all the keys work properly with a standard USB keyboard, then you can be pretty certain it is the notebook keyboard at fault, and not something more serious.

Hey Everyone

Started typing on my internal laptop keyboard today and reliased that mainly keys a b and n were not working.
So I decided to clean them by taking off the key and white holder, then used a cloth to clean all the dust etc.. both under the rubber button and around it. This still didn't work however, so I then decided to uninstall and reinstall the driver as well. However this didn't work either.

Its probably best to try and buy a new one off e-bay, but before I do this does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also interesting, a b and n seems to be a popular combination of keys for other toshiba laptops that don't seem to be working... (Using a USB keyboard atm to type which works fine)

Hello,Having a problem with my laptop keyboard where the hotkey function buttons have suddenly stopped working as they used to. Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Ive tried going into the BIOS and toggling the hotkey option on and off, and installing hp quick launch software but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance - C. I have a Commodore Laptop (Argentina) and all the keys that have a FN function attached to them do not work as their normal function any more - this happened after lending the laptop to my kids....

I think it may be FN lock, but can-t find any way to unlock it.

Any ideas please.

Many thanks.

A:Keys that have FN functions on them not working as normal keys

Check the Manual on the model's Support Downloads webpage for key combo to unlock:

Try updating or reinstalling the hotkeys driver from the model's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager

While there look also for any downloadable fixes for these key functions or related.

It may also be disabled in msconfig>Startup. You can google the listings there to see what they're for. Normally you only need your AV checked and the rest are freeloaders, but some models require hotkey software to be running at startup if it provides anciliiary functions like backlighting, function toggling, etc.

Ctrl + F8 works and Alt + F8 works.
F10 is not working properly, two presses give one response.
F11 and F12 sometimes work and sometimes not.
Since I have tried another keyboard and the problem is the same,
so this should not be a hardware problem.
The system is Windows 7.
I have tried restoring it to a few days before, but that didn't help.
I looked around, closed all other applications,
trying to find any software that might have a hot key.
But if it is a hot key conflict, then it shouldn't affect F10, F11 and F12.

Hi rafa_mota04 ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
Would you have the machine number? Check on the machine number from the sticker or check it from here ,just keep your serial number confidential.
Would onscreen keyboard and external USB keyboard work?
You can try setting the defaults in the BIOS (exit tab) then save and exit and recheck.
If still the same check the numbers 5 and 6 in the BIOS if working ( security password would allow you to type but do not save since it is just a test) .
Update us how it goes.

Wow, i've noticed that i have made alot of threads recently and im sorry to bother. This time it is about my HP. Some keys dosen't work on the computer(not related to any damage done). I've tried everything. I have tried reseating the keyboard which only made it worse. I couldn't type all the numbers expect 5 and 6. But reseating the keyboard solved a little of the number problem(not entirlely) The numbers that aren't working is 1, 5 and 6. The letters i can't type is Q, A, and Z. I've tried alot of tutorials, disabled numlock(via registry because numlock turned on automatic and i don't even have numlock on my keyboard). Please help me im desprete, i haven't used my HP for along time because of this problem.

P.S Sorry if i typed alot of things wrong, i have a very strong headache.

Sounds like you will need a new keyboard. Try the on screen keyboard and another keyboard. If laptop hook up an external keyboard do they work.

a few keys on my keyboard have stopped working. For no apparent reason the b n and ctrl keys do not work. There may be a few others. Any suggestions? My ex claims he didn't download or spill anything on it. I've run an antivirus and cleaned the keyboard without any luck. It's a Compaq laptop running on windows xp. I wet through the troubleshooting application under the control panel options ad that didn't help. I've taken her apart before so if that's what I need to do the I will. If anyone has dealt with this and can give me any leads I'd appreciate it. Searches are difficult I have to copy ad paste anytime I need to use those keys. Posting this so it was readable took for ever!! Please help me! Sorry if this is the wrong forum. It was the closest I could think of.

Try the keyboard in Safe Mode. If it doesn't work properly there, just get a new one. They're really cheap.

Hi, I'm here again

I've noticed that my Fn keys are not working on my Hp laptop.. I searched on hp page for any signs of drivers that could solve it and I found this..

I downloaded it and tried to install but the installation wasn't successful so it's still not working. Does anyone have some experience with it or know how to proceed?
Thank you

A:Fn keys not working

Until we diagnose the problem, try the following:

Do you know when the problem started? If you do, try to do a System Restore to before it began.
System Restore

Also try an SFC/SCANNOW command. If related system files are corrupt or have been deleted, it should be able to fix or replace them.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

A Repair Install will do much the same thing. This is normally for users who can't find a solution to their problem but don't want to do a clean install.
Repair Install

I also read that the Fn keys not working can be a malware problem. If it is, download and install both:
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET
avast! - Download Free Antivirus software or Internet Security
Avast Free Antivirus - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET
and do a full system scan on both.

Hi, It sound like you have the wrong keyboard layout set - ie Uk keyboard layout for a US keyboard. If you have more than one keyboard layout set in Windows 10, you can toggle between them by holding down the Ctrl Key and pressing the Shift key Alternatively, you can change the layout for your keyboard as described on the relevant link below. Change Keyboard Layout - Windows 8 & 10 Regards, DP-K

My Lenovo Y40-70 is having a problem with its keyboard. I have to use my virtual onscreen keyboard which is very frustrating. Some keys such as  P, 0, -, =, /, ., are not working. Do I need to change the entire keyboard or is there any possibility of fixing these keys?

This is really random. The keys are messing up. They either won't work or type double. I can only presume it's a virus. I've tried to gain access to my password protected user account via my guest account but I can't type the password in because of the way it's messing up. I want to use windows defender to try to sort it out.

What can I do to sort this?

A:Keys not working.

You might need to clean your keyboard. I recommend doing that first before checking for viruses.

Hi, I bought new laptop with DOS operating system.  I installed new Win7 64 bit, i got all driver from HP offcial site. All driver got successfully installed but, graphic dirver shows error in manager page. So that i can't able to access F2,F3,F5 key. I am sure could be driver issue & i tried all driver from AMD site as well as Hp site. Still same issue persist, so that i am not able to control brightness now. Note: Graphic dirver installed successfully but it's show error symbol in device manager page. Graphic card details:  AMD Radeon R5 Series M330 . Can you please help me to rectify this issue?. Regards,Mohan J

A:F2, F3,F5 keys not working.

Hey @mohanj2787, Welcome to the HP Forums! I read your post and wanted to reach out to help you! In your post, you had said that currently your HP 15-ac149tx Notebook will not install the AMD driver.  Here is a link to your product page. You system came with Intel 5500 HD graphics not AMD. So you need to uninstall the AMD from your Device Manager.  You could try: In the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Display Adapters to expand that category. Right-click on Graphics and select Update Driver Software. Choose the option to Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software. The Notebook should find and automatically install the updated driver. After the installation is complete, restart your Notebook. You could try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows. This is a download that will run a check on your system and usually repair it. Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed!  Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Please click the Accept as Solution, to the right of the Thumbs up icon, if your issues is resolved.  Thanks.
