Icons and Taskbar missing in Windows XP

Q: Icons and Taskbar missing in Windows XP

Upon Windows XP start up only my wallpaper shows There are no icons no task bar no start menu nothing just a blank screen other than my wallpaper When use control alt delete I am able to pull up the task manager However when I start a new task called explorer exe this does not bring up my taskbar or icons although I do see the taskbar flash visibly for half a second then disappear I tried this solution Just to let everyone know While surfing through the internet I found someone who solved this problem and has a way to fix it There are registry keys in the registry that are causing the problem It affects the explorer exe and iexplorer exe files This is the key that needs to be deleted HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Image File Execution Options explorer exeHKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Image File Execution in missing XP Windows Icons Taskbar and Options Icons and Taskbar missing in Windows XP iexplorer exeOnce these keys are deleted the desktop and internet explorer should come back to life I have gone to the registry and looked for quot explorer Icons and Taskbar missing in Windows XP exe quot and quot iexplorer exe quot in the place specified and found Icons and Taskbar missing in Windows XP neither of those keys I also tried this fix Go to regedit and set HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Winlogon quot Shell quot quot explorer exe quot but the value of the shell already contained quot explorer exe quot I received a message earlier that some files that Windows needs to run were missing damaged so I ran the repair install from my windows xp home CD I have also downloaded and installed several virus programs and run them They did find a delete several viruses and trojans but I still have the same problem This virus is also blocking some of the major antivirus antispyware websites I have been visiting however I have been able to download them via download com since that website does not seem to be blocked When I do install several of the antivirus applications the virus does not allow me to download updated definition files I downloaded HijackThis but whenever I tried to open it and install it after download I'll click HJTInstall exe and it will come up asking me if I would like to run it When I click quot Run quot the window goes away and nothing happens I assume the trojan recognizes the name of this program After downloading HJTInstall exe I went into the Task Manager and started a new task then clicked Browse I went to the desktop where my HijackThis installer was located I then changed the name from HJTInstall exe to some nonsense word like hlep exe Then I was able to run the installer and start HijackThis As an extra precaution I also changed the name of the folder directory in which it installed Example C Program Files hlep instead of C Program Files Trend Micro HijackThisI was able to generate a logfile but could not figure out how to get it off this computer I tried Yahoo mail Gmail yahoo briefcase google docs blogs and my local network -- all different attempts to move the HijackThis log onto another computer but none of them worked I also tried the following solution Microsoft TechNet Forums - vundo trojanhttp social technet microsoft com forums - f f d Hello If you are experiencing the problems named in the topic thread you may be losing your patience and mind by now I picked up this trojan days ago and it has taken me one re-install and that long to fix it Forget the advice from symantec and microsoft - the vundo removers do not work The answer is to install and run 'superantispyware' - this spotted vundo varients immediately removed them and all if working fine I was able to download and install SuperAntiSpyware and manually update the definitions file but I still have the same problem I did delete a file called shmgrate exe from Windows System This file was listed on a Norton webpage as part of the Backdoor Gaster worm The Norton site also stated Adds the value quot Shmgrate exe quot quot Sysdir ibot exe quot to the registry key HKEY CURRENT USER SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Runbut I did not see this registry key when I ran regedit Finally I discovered this forum and it seems that it might allow me to post my logfile here Thank you in advance DDS Version - Preferred Solution: Icons and Taskbar missing in Windows XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't seem to be able to upload and attach the Attach.txt file, although I do have it available if necessary.

OH! I think it worked this time!

I'll start by saying that I am not computer literate.  When I click my start button I can no longer see any programs and the only item now on my taskbar is my file folder.  This first happened after the last Windows update 10/2/16.  I restored the computer to a prior date and all was fine until ? it updated again?  Virus?Edit: Moved topic from Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hello I am posting by using an friend s PC At startup my PC sometimes doesn t display any Icons and the taskbar is absent Desktop and Taskbar XP Windows Icons missing Also Right-Click doesn t work Usually by restarting my PC a few times it works Unfortunately today i restarted it around times Windows XP Desktop Icons and Taskbar missing and its still the same problem Don t worry I have enough brain to google my situation But unfortunately none of the solutions worked for me This is what I tried and none of them works Open up Task Manager- gt Process Tab- gt select explorer exe - gt End Process- gt File- gt New Task- gt explorer exe Enter Safe Mode and use the Windows System Restore to an older date Note The desktop Windows XP Desktop Icons and Taskbar missing here and Taskbar works fine in Safe Mode But since Safe Mode is limited I doesn t help me to use it Windows XP Desktop Icons and Taskbar missing as default duh Create a new User for the PC Note Desktop icons and Taskbar doesn t show up This doesn t work because it gets stuck at adding some preferences when starting It just gets stuck to an non responding state And if I end the application explorer exe shuts down too Also if I open up explorer exe this application comes and gets stuck again Copy and Paste explorer exe into the WINDOWS folder then rename it into explorer exe- gt new task on the Task Manager- gt regedit exe- gt after some paths edit the Shell thing from Explorer exe to Explorer exe quot option Note the explorer exe process is changed to explorer exe but it has the same effect Copy the explorer exe file from another PC and use it to the broken PC Additional Notes to my problem a I cannot open any folder using commands My Computer WINDOWS folder etc This will just bring another explorer exe next to the other one then nothing happens b I can open an browser but it says that I don t have internet for some reason c Control Panel doesn t open using the command Control exe but its features Add Remove Programs System Properties etc work fine by opening using commands d I repeat this is an old problem but restarting the PC a few times fixed it This is an urgent problem I need the PC fixed as soon as possible I would prefer to not format my PC So are there any other solutions beside this Thank you for your time reading OS I m using Windows XP Home Edition SP P S I am not an native English speaker so please excuse my bad grammar nbsp

A:Windows XP Desktop Icons and Taskbar missing

Try Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar.

Download the .vbs file and save it to your hard drive.

Double-click the .vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

Restart the computer.

Hope it helps.

Hi all
(I'm italian, excuse me for my bad english).
I have a pc with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I have a problem with some icons on taskbar: sometimes some applications are displaying the wrong icons, sometimes, as you can see (screenshot), I don't see some icons: sometimes a few are missing (this time I have 8 icons of about 20!).

If I restart my pc, some icons return, but many still missing or are wrong!

So I launched this tool from microsof (I think it rebuilt icon cache, but I'm not sure): In Windows le icone vengono modificate in modo non corretto
but it doesnt' fix the problem, see this screenshot after using this tool from microsoft:

now as you can see some applications are displaying the wrong icons and 2 icons are still missing ...is there any fix for this problem? thanks!!

Vittorio.

A:problem with icons on taskbar (wrong icons or missing icons)

perhaps the fixit from microsoft may help...

System icons do not appear in the notification area in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 until you restart the computer

I am plagued by disappearing icons from my Task Bar.
They vanished?. I don?t know why but recently I installed Nero 7 Essentials and they all re-appeared? But, have subsequently vanished again. I have placed a check box in the volume icon in the taskbar" check box in Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices. But no icon appears.
I would like to retrieve them all, but don?t know how.

A:MISSING TASKBAR ICONS

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner.Restore the Task Bar to Default Settings - #99 on the left.Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

why? how do I get them back?

A:missing taskbar icons

For volume try this: Right Click on Taskbar > Properties > Notification Area tab > under system icons, check Volume

Open Explorer, right click on the USB drive and click safely remove.

When I open up the "Customize" page the icons is there and I have it set to show Icon and Notifications. However it is not on the task bar, or in the list on the pop up when I cursor on the arrow. One is the power, battery icon.

Also, in the Icon list how do you delete old icons that you don't even have programs installed anymore.

Hi .http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm You can try #195, right side.As a matter of judgment...I would do several thorugh scans for malware before doing this. You can try a couple of these free online scanners to see if anything has slipped by your protection:(Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asphttp://housecall.trendmicro.comhttp://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.htmlhttp://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtmlhttp://onlinescan.avast.com/http://ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspxhttp://www.eset.com/onlinescan/http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Scan Only - no removalIf you find that you're infected (or the scan doesn't complete or closes unexpectedly), post in the Am I Infected forum located here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/I would also run Malwarebytes and/or SUPERAntispyware on the system, before executing the script in the first link.Malwarebytes.org - http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware! - http://www.superantispyware.com/ Louis

First, set MSCONFIG to start the system normally. It's because of problems like this that MSCONFIG should only be used to troubleshoot problems - then it should be reset to default. To remove startup items, use this free tool from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/Autoruns.mspxTo fix them all individually, it's going to require that you locate the appropriate executable file(s) that are required to run those items. This is (IMO) actually more work than just reinstalling those applications to fix the missing stuff.

Hello. A friend of mine is having a problem with his computer. He was on a porn site and had walked away and left it on for about 5 hours. When he came back there was a million porn pop ups and then when he shut them all down his icons on his desktop was missing and so was his task bar. The only thing he can do is CONTROL ALT DEL and shut down. He tried rebooting that way but it didn't work. Then he tried a hard reboot but that also didn't work.

How can I help him? what does he do now? I read some of the previous info on missing icons and such, but it was not helpful to me. We are both confused.

Please help

According to all I have read there should be a Properties Icon shown when you right click a blank area of the Taskbar in W10. There should also be a Task View icon to the right of the Start icon. I have neither of these. If I right click the Taskbar (blank area) I get 4 options: 1. Show app icons. 2. Show all notification icons. 3. Show touch keyboard button. 4. Show language switcher. That's it but no Properties. Any help offers?

I am plagued by disappearing icons from my Task Bar.
They vanished…. I don’t know why but recently I installed Nero 7 Essentials and they all re-appeared? But, have subsequently vanished again. I have placed a check box in the volume icon in the taskbar" check box in Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices. But no icon appears.
I would like to retrieve them all, but don’t know how.

Try running system restore from recovery console...If you have Windows XP CD... (if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)1. Boot from the CD.2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R:3. You'll find yourself at this screen:4. Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.NOTE: at this point your numbers to the right of your keyboard are turned off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers remember to hit the Numbers Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to wait through the previous steps to get back to the console. 5. You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the Enter key. 6. This will bring you to a prompt that says: C:\WINDOWS>7. Type: cd \ Press EnterNote: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work8. The prompt should now say:C:\>9. Type: cd system~1\_resto~1Press Enter.===============================================================================Note: If it gives an error "Access Denied" while accessing the folder, follow the method below Type: cd \ Press Enter Type: cd windows\system32\config Press Enter Type: ren system system.bak Press Enter (note the spaces between ren and system, and then between system and system.bak) Type: exit Press Enter now the computer should restart, then follow steps 1-9===============================================================================10. Type: dirPress EnterNOTE: When you hit enter it will list all the restore points folders like "rp1", "rp2" we have to see the last restore point to copy the file from a recent backup. If the restore points have more than one page then you have keep on hitting the key to view the last restore point folder.NOTE: It is a good rule of thumb to choose the files from the restore point folder which the second to the last one.11. Type: cd rp{with the second to the last restore point number } Press EnterExample: cd rp9. if rp10 is the last restore point12. Type: cd snapshotPress Enter.NOTICE: Now the command prompt will look like this:c:\system~1\resto~1\rp9\snapshotNote : restore point 9 assumed for clarity of the content.13. Type: copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\systemPress Enter14. Type:ExitPress Enter.Final note : If the above procedure won't solve the problem, repeat all steps, but in step 13 type:copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software Alternatively, select different restore point. If you don't have Windows CD... Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.isoDownload, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=downloadUsing Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.Boot to the CD...let it finish loading. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.Follow steps 3 - 14.

No app icons will appear on the taskbar. They show fine in the Start menu, but are missing on the taskbar. It only includes apps, no installed programs are having this issue. This includes calculator, Edge, Xbox, etc. I tried rebuilding the icon cache from this tutorial, but it still didn't work. I've included a screenshot for reference.

Hi,

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook S series that runs on XP professional. My taskbar has been doing some strange things lately, by making icons that i need disappear. some of which are my battery power icon, volume control icon and safety remove hardware. I have checked that these have been made to show on the taskbar, but they still aren't there. Also, my windows explorer takes a long time to load whenever I start my laptop. What should I do?

Hi -
Have you thought there may be something else that is causing odd items like that -
Can you first scan with your Antivirus , then scan with Malwarebytes or SUPERAntiSpyware -
Next run a check disk scan - Click on My computer >Right click on local Disk (usually :C) > Click on Properties > Tools -
The top item should be Error checking , Click Check Now and tick the 2 boxes that are in the panel > Click Start and reboot your computer to do a full check -

Thank You -

I am running Win XP, SP3. The question I have is, the other day the computer was being used in the same way, and it was noticed that the icons were not there by the clock (on the taskbar). The space is there for the icons, and if I go and tell it to show/hide the volume icon (for example) it changes the size of the blue space, but no icons show/hide.

The attached is a screen shot of the bottom line of the screen. As you can see, the clock is there, and there is space for the icons. I can click on the < arrow to expand the icons, but it is all blue.

Any ideas how to get the icons to show again, and not just the blue space??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not aware of any updates or changes to anything prior to this happening.

A:Solved: Icons missing on Taskbar

The following that I copied from Kelley's Korner should help you.
Icons - Notification Area

Windows XP provides a number of options for customizing what Microsoft has decided to call the "Notification Area" of your Taskbar (the area that displays the clock and a number of icons). By default, Windows XP hides any inactive icons here. But if you prefer, you can choose to hide (or show) individual icons all the time.

For example, suppose you want to keep the Volume and Synchronization Manager icons out of site, regardless of how often you use them. Right click a blank area of the Taskbar and select Properties. Under Notification area, click Customize. Alternatively, Right click a blank area of the Notifications Area and select Customize Notifications.

One at a time, select the Volume and Synchronization Manager icons, then Right click the down arrow next to it and select Always hide (in the same way, you could select any icon and choose the "Always show" option). Click OK twice, and now, an arrow appears on the edge of the Notifications Area. Click it to display the hidden icons.

Icons - Notification Area - Chevron Missing

For some users, setting the very first icon to Always Hide, restores the arrow.

Icons - Notification Area - Missing

Three methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account or...

Right click My Computer/Manage. Expand Services and Applications then Click on Services. A list of services appears in the right column. Scroll down to the SSDP and uPnP Service. Right click each, choose properties. Change the text next to "Startup type:" to Disabled.

Or if you are running XP SP1 uninstall UPnP from Add/Remove Windows Components.

Hide or Show Inactive Icons in the Notification Area (Line 53)

Remove Past Items From the Notification Area (Line 53)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Once done, Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe, and then click End Process. In Task Manager, click File, click New Task, type explorer, and then click OK.

After you have all icons in place, run this edit:

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)

When booting up, my friend's computer only shows the desktop wallpaper. I brought up the Task manager... and explorer.exe IS there... however, the icons/taskbar aren't visible. When i end the explorer process, then start it again with the new task feature... everything loads up fast and correct.
Why does this happen!?

Hello All I have gone through a number of posts on this problem and tried them but they did not work for me Here is my problem Yesterday a user complained that there laptop had slowed down in recent days I went ahead and ran and desktop taskbar Missing icons msconfig the I deleted most of the programs that were running on startup I also stopped some services The Missing desktop icons and taskbar PC speed improved Missing desktop icons and taskbar but when the user restarted the laptop there were no icons or taskbar I pressed ctrl-alt-del and started task manager I started explorer exe and my computer showed up with the drives on the machine I also ran sfc scannow and it did give any errors i created another profile and it has the same results When I right click on the desktop nothing shows up I booted into safe Missing desktop icons and taskbar mode and there are no restore points to recover to I suspect the problem is registry related and was caused by me deleting the startup programs I am not sure how I can restore the laptop without reinstalling it Any advice Noel

A:Missing desktop icons and taskbar

I would be more curious as to exactly what services you disabled. Nothing in startup should prevent proper boot.
Did you check their dependencies before deactivating them?
Sometimes even we more knowledgeable folks get in a rush and forget to do the simple things.

I have Windows XP.
I was watching a video on YouTube when Norton detected the "heuristic virus" Suspicious.Mystic 4 different times.
Files removed by Suspicious.Mystic: c:\windows\system32\temp.tmp
c:\windows\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe
c:\windows\temp.tmp
The first file mentioned was removed a second time according to Norton. Explorer.exe is nowhere to be found and I also can't find the DLL cache. My desktop icons and taskbar are missing as well. I've been searching for a way to fix this for hours and tried many things. Any ideas?

don't know how it's happened but 1 user account on the vista enabled pc has lost it's desktop icons & taskbar

vista reports missing dll files as

logeofln.dll
ctlgtaxm.dll
mlii.dll
fccba.dll

have done a system restore but that didn't cure it

other user accounts are not affected

A:Missing Taskbar & Desktop Icons

These files appear not shipped with vista.
they are located in the temp dir means they are created on the fly.
They may belong to 3rd party apps or generated by virus.

Hi,

I just turned my computer on today and my taskbar is magically gone. I can't right click where it is on the screen and I know it's not hidden etc (i'm not a moron). I can hit the windows key to bring upt he start menu but I cannot see the bar, clock, etc on my screen. I've tried a bunch of things and nothing has worked. I thought it was just that explorer.exe wasnt on, but my icons and such are working just fine, and when I control+alt+delete it shows explorer.exe as running.

please help, this is driving me nuts

I just installed the AVG free virus checker and a little message popped up where my taskbar should be with a little box but there was no task bar. I'm not a retard, but could someone help me? i think i have a virus or something

My Vista taskbar icons are set to large and the taskbar is not locked. I have just installed the latest Adobe Reader update (9.1.3) and several of the taskbar quick launch 'buttons' show and work but the icons themselves do not show. I have tried re-installing the shortcuts, also changing the icons to small but that makes no difference. Not sure where to go from here?

A:Solved: Some Taskbar Icons Missing

I have solved this eventually by re-installing the 'offending' programs. Not sure why this happened but have found the pragmatic solution!

I was asked to investigate a friends PC which had lost all Icons/Taskbar/Start Menu both in normal and safe mode. He reported a problem with IE launching spurious browser windows shortly before.

The PC was XP with SP3. I could launch Task Manager, the only obvious intruder was A.EXE which I killed, but any scans were terminated after a few seconds. I tried HijackThis and MalwareBytes. Attempts to run Explorer gave the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".
System Restore did not solve the problem.

I removed the HD and scanned it on a 2nd PC. AVG identified and removed several trojans (log attached). I reinstalled th HD and still no Icons etc, but could run Malwarebytes which found and fixed much more. (Log attached)

Still no Icons. How do I get them back?

'evening all
I'm currently running a Dell Inspiron 4150 Laptop (Intel P4, 1.6Ghz mobile, 256m ram), WinXP Pro (recent SP2 upgrade) and host of other odd goodies set to run at startup(Norton 2004, PeerGuardian, PGP, mozilla). The problem is, there's no telling what icons are going to show up on the taskbar at startup. Sometimes I've got nothing but the volume controll icon, other times everything shows up except the battery status monitor. Other times, I get nothing at all. All the programs set to boot on startup are running, their icons are just missing. Any hints? I can't seem to locate a microsoft bugfix for this, so it may just be me...

Thanks,

A:Missing desktop icons and taskbar, other problems

Well, I don't understand it, but everything seems better now...

I booted up in normal mode, and although the icons and taskbar didn't come up immediately, they came up after a minute or two. I restarted again a few times and now everything comes right up just as it should. Maybe ComboFix did its job, but I was just being a bit impatient.

Well anyway, if anyone can help me understand what happened or how to prevent this in the future, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster. NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.Security CheckDownload Security Check by screen317 from here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Run Combofix:You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal. You can download Combofix from one of these links.Link 1Link 2Link 31. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you. Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stallNote 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." A:Missing taskbar and desktop icons (explorer.exe?)

Hi twmrb, welcome to TSG. Your use of file sharing applications is just asking for trouble.

Download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe

Okay, now click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find System Startup Service (SvcProc). Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.
Then download and run this app:

http://www.mypctuneup.com/evaluate.php
Boot to safe mode. Instructions here:

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

While in safe mode open HJT and check the following entries:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe,C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dinst] C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qxwbede] c:\windows\system32\rqiboh.exe r
Click Fix Checked and close HJT.

Open Killbox. Now put a tick by Delete on Reboot. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file on next reboot. Click Yes. It will then ask if you want to reboot now. Click No.

C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
c:\windows\system32\rqiboh.exe
Reboot to normal mode and go here for a couple of online AV scans:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
When done, post a current HJT log, okay?

I had to do a total system install and used the usb that Dell sent me for my system and all seemed ok but then I noticed that the icons were gone. Except even thought the icons don't show the programs still run and but can't be accessed via the desktop by right clicking. and this can be seen in the picture attachment. Any help would be greatfully accepted and much thanks. notice also the lack of network icon is missing but space for it is there also. if a fix for this is also possible that would be good too.

A:Icons missing but space shown where they should be in taskbar

If I understand you correctly. You are trying to get the Icons in the little box down by the clock.
If that is correct just drag and drop them down by the clock.

Alrighty, i would post a Hijack this, but i don't know the process name to run it from the taskbar. But this is what happened.

Just yesterday my friend changed my taskbar text.
I told him to change it back, but all he did was rename the file.
He rebooted after he renamed the file
When my comp started back up, i'm where i am now, without anything on my screen but my wallpaper. Any idea how i could get it back?

A:Start menu & taskbar icons missing b/c of virus

Only thing is that the Start Menu is still missing the Programs/Folders on the right side - like where it usually says "Documents," "Control Panel," "Pictures," etc. The only one there is Computer.

What about the programs folders? Please expand it and let us know if you find icons and files under each startmenu folder.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract (unzip) the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Warning: Do not run Option #2 until you are instructed to do so. Running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Hello all The issue I am having is at startup After rebooting my pc I discovered that the screen was black shortly after the Welcome screen loads Pressing Ctrl Alt Del brings up the Task manager and shows me that explorer exe is running however my toolbar and desktop background aren't showing I cancelled the process and ran explorer exe as a new task and the toolbar reappears though without my AVG icon I then logged off and back on to my user profile My icons reappeared in the toolbar After doing some research on people with similar problems I attempted to correct not icons loading missing properly/taskbar Explorer.exe the problem by first checking the shell extension Explorer.exe not loading properly/taskbar icons missing of explorer exe to see if it was renamed or manipulated but it shows as quot Explorer exe quot I then attempted a system restore to an earlier date but that didn't fix the issue either I've run both AVG Antivirus and Malware Bytes from safe mode in an attempt to locate any infections but neither found anything I also ran sfc scannow but the problem persists Also due to the product being pre-installed so no installation dvd I could not find the option to run a startup repair The last Explorer.exe not loading properly/taskbar icons missing program I downloaded was Microsoft's Compatibility Toolkit v and used it to remove the UAC popup when running Ventrilo chat software I had recently downloaded Vista Home Premium sp as well but have since uninstalled it trying to troubleshoot this issue Any help would be greatly appreciated ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time Explorer.exe not loading properly/taskbar icons missing of this report Machine name BANGER Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium Build Service Pack vistasp gdr - Language English Regional Setting English System Manufacturer HP-Pavilion System Model GC AA-ABA a n BIOS Phoenix - AwardBIOS v PG Processor AMD Athlon X Dual Core Processor CPUs GHz Memory MB RAM Page File MB used MB available Windows Dir C Windows DirectX Version DirectX DX Setup Parameters Not found DxDiag Version bit Unicode Edit I tried startup repair and it didn't find any errors I'm stumped

I chose recently to run Spybot S&D. I can't verify whether or not it fixed the issue, but I haven't seen the error return. I have noticed, however, that IE is lagging a bit when loading initially.

Hi,

I know this problem is constantly reported, but I have tried literally every solution I can find online and nothing brings them back.

They are greyed out in the settings and so cannot be enabled that way. This occurred just after installing SP1.

Things I have tried

* Editing in Local Group Policy Editor, all values are set as disabled

* Looking for the same values in Regedit, not there, so should work.

* Deleting another registry (forgot name, from Classes\Local Settings directory)

* Random bat files and MS fix its that i presume do one of the above

Any other suggestions?

Hi everyone!

I joined this community to get a solution to my problem that came up yesterday. I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. In the course of my work, my taskbar buttons for my running programs suddenly disappeared. The quick launch icons all showed and expanded to the right with the dotted separator beside the start button visible but the second dotted separator after the last quick launch icon which you can drag also disappeared. System restore did not work and always resulted in errors. Now, I'm just using alt+tab to change windows but I'm not used to it and is uncomfortable for me.

Any suggestions Friends on what I should do? I hope you can help me with my problem.

All my usual startup icons have disappeared from the taskbar and no end of reboots have made any difference. I have checked the drive for errors and none were found. I have tried TaskbarRepairToolPlus! without success. Anybody any clues as to how to restore them? Oh, more seriously, I cannot access Task Manager. Maybe related, I don't know. A dialogue says it has been disabled by my administrator. This is my own PC, I don't even know how to log on as administrator! Any help much appreciated.

Hello, I'm just new here, I'm just asking for some help for my problem. You see, when I installed a Custom Icon Pack (with installer), after rebooting, my Shutdown Button just became bugged with the text written on the button dissappeared. Plus, my Taskbar icons suddenly dissappeared even though it is shown in the options that it has the "Show Icon and Notifications" option enabled. Please help me with my problem. It's really a hassle to uninstall the icon pack everytime just to get those thing back. Thanks for your help.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

For AVG antivirus and anti-spyware security software users only.

Due to recent changes in AVG and how it interacts with CF, AVG must be uninstalled to run ComboFix. You will get a message from CF stating such.

If AVG will not uninstall, it is first recommended to uninstall it with this AppRemover by Opswat. The AVG uninstaller can be downloaded from here > AppRemover.exe Go to their homepage and you will see they have support for removal of other AV's as well AVG appremover tool.

First off I just want to say thanks-in-advance and BLESS YOU to everybody in the forums who helps out What an incredible service That said here s my situation login: desktop from hang XP Sporadic Win on and icons on taskbar missing I think I could be infected It s Windows XP SP on a box that s configured to dual-boot with Fedora Default boot is XP SOMETIMES but not every time when I log into my account which has admin privs the desktop wallpaper appears but no program icons nor system tray appear Sometimes this stays this way forever sometimes after a long wait the icons do appear along with the toolbar While in this wallpaper-only quot hang quot state I noticed one time the hard drive light seeming to regularly flicker once every second Ctl-Alt-Del is able to bring up task manager From here I am able to launch Explorer via File - gt New Task Run When such an Explorer comes up however none of my standard services are loaded Which usually were Avast ThreatFire etc This situation also may involve issues with internet connectivity -- I can t be sure but it sometimes seemed that when my wireless connection establishes then the icons and tray DO appear I experimented a little bit with disabling the wireless via a hardware switch on the side Sporadic hang on login: missing icons and taskbar from desktop on Win XP and then re-enabling but no conclusions Mostly because of my concern about the possibility that malware could be messing with internet traffic I m really hoping for a solution that can be pursued while OFFLINE Would you please indicate in whatever procedures you suggest both which mode safe or regular and from which user Administrator or user acct I should run the tools Please know that any request to run in regular mode is because I may likely hang upon login I d personally prefer working from safe mode but that s your call Many many thanks

A lot of the tools need to run in normal mode to be 100% effective, some require safemode in order to operate properlyIf you are using a router, disconnect from the internet. Reset the router and give it a strong password. All tools can be run offline after downloading to your Desktop. In fact some require it.I would run as Administrator for everythingLet's start with Mbam:--------------------------------The process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Note 2:-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. You guys Rock!!! You helped me fix my work PC today and one of my coworkers asked me to post this for him regarding his home PC.

He has Win2000 and lost all his desktop icons, start menu and task bar. He has to do a ctrl-alt-delete to do anything.

All of the previous fixes here appear to be for XP machines.

Any advice I can pass along?

Thanks again for the help.

A:Missing Taskbar and Desktop Icons Evertime I click links on the internet

I'm not an expert and you might want to wait for expert advice. It seems to me that explorer.exe process stops responding in ur system. to bring the desktop back, just hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up Task Manager and select "New Task (Run...)" from the File menu and type in "explorer.exe".

i dont know the reason why this is happening (if you're using internet explorer, u can try using another browser like firefox and see if this still happens. further, viruses can also cause this, so scan ur system for them. or just wait for some expert here to advise you).

Hello jerald,

You missed the most important step.

As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help....

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

Please include the following in your next reply:

main.txt
an attached extra.txt

A:Missing Taskbar, Start Menu and Desktop Icons - Desperate Newbie Seeking Help

Hello and welcome to TSF.

As seen in Post #2 of our sticky topic 'NEW INSTRUCTIONS Read this Before Posting For Malware Removal Help'

Quote:

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, before posting for assistance. Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

A:Black Desktop, missing all icons, malware, start menu missing icons, programs all empty

I went through this same thing. The folders that say empty...are they light rather than normal? If so you didn't change the setting for files and folders correctly (I did the same thing at first) Open up windows explorer (my computer, etc) click on organize, then go down to folder and search options:

On the first tab (general) under navigation pane make sure "show all folders" is selected.

Then go to the next tab (view) and make sure those settings are correct, select the radio for "show hidden files, folders and drives" and make sure all your other settings are the way you want them.
I got mine from clicking on a link to a website I'd never gone to before and then what i thought was adobe told me that I needed to update my flash player to view the content on the page, I clicked ok and it took over my computer with the same exact things you're talking about.

Hi. I apologize if this has been asked before, but I've just gotten a new pc with Windows 7. Love it, but really do not like the taskbar icons that pop up when I hover over an item on the desktop. Is there a way to remove this feature? Also, sometimes, (for no apparent reason I can see, I get this "transparent" square on my desktop. It goes away, but what causes it?

Many thanks for your help.

For your first question, see here: Taskbar Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

Your second issue almost sounds like Aero Peek. It occurs when you hover your mouse over a certain button in your taskbar.

Usually, a right click at the icon > click "unpin from taskbar" will do the trick.

What icons are you referring to ? Please give names of the icons.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.alternate download linkNote: The file will be randomly named (i.e. 5mkuvc4z.exe).Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on the randomly named file to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current versionRead the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders). If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window. If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media. In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo. Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete. When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable. In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot. After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. This references showing Toolbar rows Icons Taskbar 3 2-line Taskbar Large small using Quick Launch Bar icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a quot bug quot with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom I for a while now have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary left monitor When I first set this up it showed lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to lines on the standard taskbar This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works With pinned applications no matter what position I drop the icon the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and Taskbar Toolbar showing 3 small rows using Large Icons 2-line Taskbar below with or without grouping enabled The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications see aforementioned topic because they group together and launched apps come after in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mode To the point After an update restart the toolbar reset and only showed lines despite there being more than enough room for rows of small icons I couldn't figure out what happened or what changed and then I read the aforementioned topic after some searching to find it actually worked Moving the taskbar to the left then back down resets the order so lines can be used on a line-unit height taskbar with large icons I would like to see several things fixed - Fix the chaotic organizing system of the horizontal taskbar to match the vertical display mode so pinned-apps are always on one side and use all lines while opened apps read like a book Other people will likely have a different opinion to this suggestion and I'd like to read them - Fix the toolbar icon organizational system so all space can be utilized without needing to move the taskbar each restart or update I have yet to restart since fixing the issue and I rarely restart as it is but others may not keep their pc running stressful on components to keep restarting Again I'd like to read others opinions on this but I'm sure most will agree on this point that unused space shouldn't be wasted Here we see all rows in my quick-launch toolbar Unfortunately without restarting or receiving a new update I can't reset the toolbar back to lines which is fantastic and I didn't take a screenshot prior to moving the taskbar to the left then back down but for simple effect imagine the top lines visibly the bottom invisible and an arrow on the right for extra icons and that is the default view You'll likely be able to repeat the effect if you don't have a toolbar and try it out

Hey everybody,

I've recently managed to recieve some stupid virus. And when I boot up I log in, then this box pops up:

There is no taskbar or any icons on the desktop and the only command that makes anything work is Task manager.

I've tried various steps such as searching through the Registry Editor, Searching my computer's drives trying to find it, Used 'Hijackthis' to scan my computer and see if it's hiding in my RAM or running in the background etc etc etc...

Also, I have performed system restores to around a week ago with no success.

I need to fix this ASAP. Within the next few hours prefferably.

Please, if you have any any ideas, post here or PM me.

Thanks in advance..

well hello there is a while now the taskbar icons are hidden and cannot be show i disabled the feature quot hide the inactive icons quot but still when i log in the taskbar gets frozen for minute or more i dont think its a registry cleaner issue since some icons appear i think its a program that its messing with my icons not a virus just a program that wants to load but cannot i are explorer the icons taskbar windows - shown not guess the task manager volume amp sound driver app icon appears plus the nvidia icon also and the microsoft security essentials i am missing some icons like the safely remove hardware etc in total i windows explorer - the taskbar icons are not shown used to have like or icons now including messenger and outlook windows explorer - the taskbar icons are not shown minimized to the taskbar icon i have when should be not less than any registry tweak to complete disable the hide inactive icons i remember before this issue occur i installed some update that every time i booted the ballon tip appeared alone in the taskbar warning me it was hidding my inactive icons that just like minute after logging in while the windows explorer was starting up i guess this created some nasty jam that now the ballon does not pop up and makes the icon permanently hidden as i said after i got them missing disabled the hide inactive icons also i used a utility from microsoft to see everything that loads up with the os drivers boot execute programs run once etc i disabled all the third party stuff i dont need sure i log in faster but still the same issue help nbsp

I have Windows Ultimate x I wrote this post on Techspot originally and decided I should also ask it here hopefully I Explorer to icons multiple Windows Taskbar Pin can get this solved it's driving me crazy Before anyone says this is impossible it's not I had it set up like this before and I reinstalled Windows now I can't get it back to the way it was I know it was a pain the first time around too though Ok basically I want a taskbar icon that when clicked opens up one of my harddrives When I click this icon I want the window to open using that icon not as a separate item in the taskbar For example see attached Pin multiple Windows Explorer icons to Taskbar images The first image is what Pin multiple Windows Explorer icons to Taskbar it should do when I click to Pin multiple Windows Explorer icons to Taskbar open it the second is what it should not do the little mp player icon is the E drive shortcut opening the window changes the icon to a harddrive Now if I change the target of the shortcut to this C Windows explorer exe e root E Then it works like it should however there's a problem I want more than one shortcut The other shortcut is to an FTP site I actually thought to save the original shortcut from before I reinstalled Windows and the target for it is this C Windows explorer exe e root ftp username password mysite com with the actual site and credentials obviously being changed here This also works as it should opening the window using the icon Here's the problem though both work when they're the only ones on the taskbar but if I put them both on the taskbar at the same time then whichever one I added first takes precedence By that I mean that if I add the shortcut to the E drive then add the shortcut to the FTP site clicking the E drive shortcut opens the window using the correct icon but clicking the FTP site shortcut opens the window using the E drive icon I know this may sound like a trivial little thing but it's possible I know it is and it's just how I want it set up Can anyone help me out please I read somewhere that I could make a copy of explorer exe rename it explorer exe and point one of the shortcuts to it and that would solve the problem Well I did that and it didn't fix it it just reversed it now clicking on the E shortcut opens a window using the FTP shortcut It doesn't make sense and I had it working before I just don't remember what I did

A:Pin multiple Windows Explorer icons to Taskbar

right click on the drive then select Create shortcut

a shortcut will appear on your desktop

drag the shortcut to your taskbar

right click the explorer icon on the taskbar, you will see the shortcut that you want there

you can then delete the shortcut from your desktop

A:XP taskbar icons flashing, can't switch windows

Do you have TweakUI for XP installed? Look under General, Focus and try different settings for applications and whether they are allowed to "steal focus". This may be a setting applied by some other "tweaker" or system customization tool, or it may be malware. Either way, this may give you control, and you can then scan for the bad guys.

Dear Sirs,
all my attempts have proved futile and you are my last hope.

Situation:
I have replaced the icons for 3 of my programs, browser, mail client & mp3 player with custom icons from the web (16x16 ico, 32x32 ico, 48x48 ico, 256x256 png). They show up correctly in the taskbar itself (small and large) BUT the preview windows title bar icon remains the original (See attachments).

Attempted solutions:
Clearing Icon Cache, Prefetch, MUICache, tried all icon color depths, removing Icon completely, re-installing programs

The aesthetic discrepancy is driving me
I believe that windows has somewhere stored a type of "favicon" upon 1st launch of the programs and I can't find it.

If anyone can help me thank you very much, I hope I simply overlooked something really straightforward

Greets,
Maxwax

Since I installed Windows 8 (on top of Vista x64 Ultimate) I have two Control Panel icons in the Taskbar.

If I right click and choose Delete to the one on the left, nothing happens.

If I right click and choose Delete to the one on the right, it deletes, but it reappears after a Reboot.

This is driving me nuts. I only want one icon.

How can I achieve this?

Thanks.

Several weeks ago, I accidently deleted the hidden icons on the taskbar (lower right corner). I have tried to work around them but it sure is a lot easier to have them there. Among those things that disappeared are the "remove hardware" button and that was a good one to have around.

I did a google search with no satisfactory answers except for one. It was supposed to show how to do this but after going through the process, it did not restore anything.

Anyone here done this a repaired it?

Thanks

Hello,

I am having the problem of windows booting to NO taskbar or desktop icons, I have run malware bytes and Avast5 and there os no reported problems.

Sadly I have run combofix before I saw all the warnings NOT to do that....WHY?

I have the log report is anyone willing to explain why one should not run combofix?

Any assistance would greatly be appreciated!!

A:Windows boots to NO taskbar or desktop icons

Hello,is anyone willing to explain why one should not run combofix?Sure. To quote Papakid:Running ComboFix by yourself is like performing open heart surgery on yourself--the scalpel and other surgical tools that is ComboFix is meant to be wielded by a highly trained surgeon only in emergencies or dire circumstances. When the surgeon is thru s/he leaves the room. So combofix should be removed from a system once it has accomplished its job, unlike an AV that is there to protect you from future infections.. . . CF does make some alterations to your system if you run it. Even if you had no malware removed and run the uninstall command, some things may be different now on your system. I can tell you that one thing is that all your restore points will be flushed out and a new one created. There is a good reason to do that when you have a severe infection--but if you aren't infected you might need those restore points. That said, please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Since you have run ComboFix, please include the ComboFix log in the new topic. Please be sure to include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to try to resolve them.If you cannot produce any of the other logs, then please create the new topic anyway, include the information that you were unable to produce the other logs and why and include the ComboFix log along with a description of your computer issues.Orange Blossom
