Preferred Solution: Computer randomly shutting down. System restore messed up. Slow computer.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I performed system restore on my computer and immediatly after all my saved files such as word documents, mp3s, and pdfs take a very long time to long. When I open the programs that load this files by themself without the file there is no problem, but when I directly double click on the saved file to open them it takes a very long time. Even right clicking on the icon of my saved files takes a very long time as well. I tried undoing my restoration but that did not work. I did a reinstallation of windows xp using just the upgrade option because I do not want to have to delete my whole hard drive. I would really appreciate any help.

Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I recently did a system restore to factory settings and now my computer is running very slow. I have done all the windows updates and checked for any updates on the drivers. I also defraged it. I noticed that the physical memory is always very high between 85 and 100. The CPU is 10-50. I can not find a reason why it is this way. Are there any suggestions of things that I cam do to help this problem.

As a preface to slow even Curious New running - computer restore. very after case system my problem I'd like to tell you I've been working with HP for two weeks now my computer is a HP m desktop and I've Curious case - New computer running very slow even after system restore. yet to resolve the problem I don't consider myself computer savvy but I know a little and the symptoms of my computer really don't make any sense to me I've run every diagnostic available by hitting the quot F quot keys on startup those include processor ram hard drive and networking My computer passed every test even the extended tests but was still running very slow slow Curious case - New computer running very slow even after system restore. meaning it took minutes to start up or shut down and was extremely slow to process any action even clicking the start menu So as HP and I were troubleshooting they decided a system restore would fix everything so we did My computer was back to it's original factory condition but was still not running right Then randomly one day I tried to start it in safe mode and as it was starting up it randomly restarted itself in normal mode and ran perfectly for about days before suffering from the same problems it had I system restored it again to no avail and off and on it would work perfectly and then Curious case - New computer running very slow even after system restore. suddenly slow down to a grind There was no association as far as I could tell with any one program making it do this there were always different programs running it really seemed like a random thing In all honesty I didn't know where to post this problem because I don't know how it could be malware if I've done a complete system restore but I also don't know how it could be a hardware problem if it's passed multiple extended tests It can't hurt to include a few messages my computer has sent me over the weeks the ones I've talked with HP about quot A disk read error has occured press ctrl alt del to restart quot black screen with white letters Windows boot manager told me that quot Windows failed to start due to a recent hardware change quot and that I should get a windows disc and repair it also added quot File boot BCD Status cx Info Error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data I read the what-to-do before posting thread but I can't run the first program because my OS is not viable and I tried to upload the GMER report but it said there were no suitable nodes for it and it was a zip file There were only things showing on the scan anyway and also said the handle was invalid in an error message before I ran the scan The two showings were HKLM SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services BTHPORT Parameters Keys e b ff f HKLM SYSTEM ControlSet Services BTHPORT Parameters Keys e b ff f After reading my post I'd like to clarify that this problem is essentially stopping me from using my computer altogether and it seems pretty severe Just wanted to add that because my post didn't allude to the seriousness enough P -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other things you may want to know about what I do with the computer I play world of warcraft use an online chat program ventrilo run AVG for anti-virus and use mozilla firefox to browse My computer is about months old Windows Vista Home Premium -bit Intel R Core TM Quad CPU Q GHz GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GT GB Hard drive

A:Computer shutting down randomly

GO HERE http://forums.techguy.org/t110854.html

Make sure your computer is not filled with Spyware /Malware /virus

Download Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware SE SETUP UPDATE and do a scan with both of them getting rid of all they find

Do a scan with Housecall and Panda

Do ALL of the above first then ---

Download Hijackthis 1.98.2 and post a log here please

DO NOT "fix " anything in the log unless directed from here

Hi My computer keeps shutting down Shutting Down Randomly is Computer either during post or sometime after and I've already done most of the troubleshooting I can think of so now I'm looking for additional input I checked the beep codes I got a couple of times which sent me in the direction of my video cards I played around with them having them both plugged in and only one and Computer is Shutting Down Randomly i was able to get back on the desktop in all three scenarios but also experience plenty of failures I dusted out the PCI slots even started swapping the RAM around with it but all in all I just can't keep the desktop on Now it's worth noting for a little bit of time leading up to this I had issues installing my nvidia drivers and would blue screen to an exception not handled message I used an old GTX card which I didn't get a random shut down from Unfortunately I don't have an extra power supply to test this but I don't think it's the power supply I believe I'm looking at a mother board issue since I can't fathom both cards going faulty together Any thoughts

A:Computer is Shutting Down Randomly

I should add that the few times it seems to be fixed and acting normally I instantly get back to square one when trying to turn on sli, update the nvidia drivers, or something else with the software. Once it starts installing, uninstalling, updating, whatever, I will eventually hit a blue screen

My computer has been shutting down randomly at least 4x a day for about 2 weeks. Any advice?

A:Computer shutting down randomly

1) Open up the case and blow out the dust using compressed air. If that's not the cause,

2) It could be the power supply

3) It could be ram - To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

4) Or it could be something else.

A:My new computer is randomly shutting down

My guess is it's the power supply. Even though it says 700w it might not be netting enough power to all of the components. Did you get any paperwork with the system or just the info for the order? I'd like to see the power supply's ratings, specifically the +12v amperage rating, which is the most important factor in running high-end video cards etc.

If your CPU or GPU was overheating, the system may start to chug a bit but it wouldn't shut down and restart itself. You're not overclocking so you need not worry about the CPU unless the fan is running under spec. I would download and install RivaTuner from www.guru3d.com to monitor temps and adjust the fan speed on the graphics card, just to be safe.

To test the RAM, run a single module at a time to test the stability and then swap the others in one by one. Do you know which brand DDR3 they installed?

A:Computer randomly shutting off

Is this a laptop or a desktop? What your describing sure sounds like an overheating issue, especially since you say it only happens with intensive software like games and movies.

You only have 1% of free space on your hdd, you should have at least 10% on a drive of this size.  You need to free up about 36GB on that drive.

Do that and see if you are still getting BSODs.

Howdy Robslob24,No infection showing here, and you don't mention getting any indications of any so far. With Daemon drivers and Half Life loaded it is hard sometimes to uncover what might be at issue with random events, since these two are often involved in computer problems. As some time has passed post back an update on your situation, and let's get a different look at things as well.Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here.

For a while now, I have had issues with my computer randomly turning off. After it turns itself off, I often have to perform a hard reset before I can boot it back up. My first thought was that it might be overheating. But after monitoring the temperatures, everything seems ok in that department. The fact that my pc is requiring a hard reset after shutting down is throwing me off a bit. Does anybody have any ideas about what might be causing this particular issue?

First of all, no one knows what you are working on. Post your exact system specs; ie make and model of mb, exact ram installed, brand and wattage of pw supply, etc, etc. If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, then post the exact make and model#.

My desktop (well, my sister's desktop) is randomly shutting down. All the fans are working, she was able to keep it running long enough to do the WINDOWS updates on it. Then after she got done with them, it shut down. It's been doing this off and on for a month now. We just thought it was because of the heat, because its hot outside and in our house. I tried to get on today, to do a virus/anti-spyware scan, and the computer wouldn't stay on long enough. She said he might need to update her drivers - but neither one of us know really how to do that. Any help? Thanks!

A:My Computer is shutting down randomly HELP ME

My first knee-jerk reaction is cooling. Do you have anything overclocked? Good air flow? My second guess would be a failing psu perhaps. That is wierd how it just clicks off. Any beeps? When it boots back up does it try to go into safe mode or does it boot normally? Does it post okay, meaning it doesn't detect anything strange? Try booting in safe mode and see if a driver is causing the issue although this doesn't seem like a driver issue at all.

Really, it sounds like overheating, failing psu or bad mobo or bad memory. I guess you can discount the bad memory since you already swapped it. I wish I could help more. Good luck.

It started happening after I installed WinXp. But I figure it's the power supply, just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

I know it isnt heat related because sometimes I'll start up the comp, it will load Windows, background comes up, and it just shuts off. Sometimes it will be on for 14 hours, and it will just shut off. If I try to start it up again with button on front it will do nothing. It seems the only way to get it to work is to turn off the power supply with button on the back, then click button on front and it will start up.

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows XP. Now that I have reinstalled my games, whenever I go to play them my computer will shut down. It's not always the same time but I barely get a few minutes into the game before it powers down. Also I have tried changing the appearance settings to minimum and it has no effect. It also doesn't seem to matter if i have multiple applications running or not. I was able to run these games fine before, so I don't know whats wrong... Thank you in advance for the help.

I have ran virus checks, spyware checks and even ran a defrag with no help i dont know what else to do.

Can you guys please give me some tips or let me know what the problem is.

Hey, does anyone have an idea why a computer would randomly just shut off? It doesn't shut down properly, it just shuts off. I've opened it up and checked all the plugs, as well as the power supply and the hard drives, and everything is OK. The motherboard's circuits are clean and the CPU is firmly secured. I know the problem is not caused by an overheat since the fans are running fine and the computer is at room temperature when the problem happens. I run Windows 7 Ultimate on an HP a6230n computer.

Hi. . .

Please click on the Live SysInternals AutoRuns link below in my sig area (3rd row - 1st). Save it to desktop. Then download the attached zip file and extract the lone batch file to your desktop.

Go to your desktop, right-click on the batch file and select run as administrator. You will see the black "DOS" screen appear and scroll followed by the green status bar. It will take several minutes to run. It will copy any mini kernel dump files, dump the app and system logs, run AutoRuns, msinfo32 and dxdiag. Please not that you will see the AutoRuns screen appear - it is just scanning and will be anout a minute (check status on bottom-left) - then it will disappear indicating the batch job is finished.

The output will be in a new folder found within your documents folder named TSF_Vista_Support.

It is imperative that you download AutoRuns to your desktop 1st - or the job will fail.

Zip the contents of the new folder up and attach to your next post.

Any ? - please let me know.

Hello I m having a serious problem with my computer and I feel that shutting down, is randomly Computer I have to type this as fast as I can because it s been shutting down very randomly lately For the last three or four days my computer has been completely dysfunctional I suppose At first it just wouldn t turn on I left it for a bit and it actually would turn on but it would run so Computer is shutting down, randomly incredibly slowly I could barely open a program and when I could OPEN them they wouldn t run at all After letting it sit for about two days I turned it back on and it works pretty okay for the first hour The second hour it ll slow right back down and then spontaneously shut down I know this sounds like an over-heating problem so I bought a really intense heavy duty laptop cooling fan to put under it That doesn t help My laptop DOES get hot but nothing significant especially with the fan I figured it might Computer is shutting down, randomly be a virus so I installed Kaspersky Kaspersky runs fine until I get to about and it will continue running but it will never go past that I ve let it run for almost hours Computer is shutting down, randomly I tried Kaspersky in Safe Mode but my computer spontaneously shut off then too I have Word installed and it won t save any files It just says quot Word Cannot Save Due To A File Permission Error quot And just doesn t Playing video is useless because it just stops halfway through whatever media is playing I ve down two system restores to two different points further away and that hasn t stopped it either I m running on a three and a half year old HP Pavilion Dv Celeron Processor running Windows XP Profession SP I tried cleaning the fan but the plastic protecting the fan is welded together with the notebook AND Here s my hijackthis logfile If that helps at all Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v Scan saved at PM on Platform Windows XP SP WinNT MSIE Internet Explorer v SP Boot mode Normal Running processes C WINDOWS System smss exe C WINDOWS system winlogon exe C WINDOWS system services exe C WINDOWS system lsass exe C WINDOWS system svchost exe C WINDOWS System svchost exe C WINDOWS system spoolsv exe C WINDOWS Explorer EXE C WINDOWS system ctfmon exe C Program Files Synaptics SynTP SynTPLpr exe C Program Files Synaptics SynTP SynTPEnh exe C WINDOWS system igfxtray exe C WINDOWS system hkcmd exe C Program Files HPQ Quick Launch Buttons EabServr exe C Program Files Java jre bin jusched exe C Program Files Common Files Real Update OB realsched exe C WINDOWS system LVCOMSX EXE C Program Files Logitech Video LogiTray exe C Program Files QuickTime QTTask exe C Program Files iTunes iTunesHelper exe C Program Files Microsoft Office Office GrooveMonitor exe C Program Files Skype Phone Skype exe C Program Files Messenger msmsgs exe C Program Files DAEMON Tools Lite daemon exe C Program Files Logitech Video FxSvr exe C Program Files Common Files Apple Mobile Device Support bin AppleMobileDeviceService exe C Program Files Bonjour mDNSResponder exe C WINDOWS system HPZipm exe C WINDOWS system svchost exe C Program Files Viewpoint Common ViewpointService exe C Program Files iPod bin iPodService exe C PROGRA Mozilla Firefox firefox exe C Program Files Yahoo Messenger ymsgr tray exe C Documents and Settings DeamonBitch Desktop HiJackThis HijackThis exe R - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Start Page http www yahoo com R - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard ShellNext http www yahoo com R - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Window Title Hacked by Godzilla R - URLSearchHook Yahoo Toolbar - EF BD -C FB- D - F- D F - C PROGRA YAHOO Companion Installs cpn yt dll O - BHO amp Yahoo Toolbar Helper - D -C F - efb- B - ECA - C PROGRA YAHOO Companion Installs cpn yt dll O - BHO AcroIEHelperStub - DF C-E AD- -A -FA C EBDC - C Program Files Common Files Adobe Acrobat ActiveX AcroIEHelperShim dll O - BHO Skype add-on mastermind - BF B-C D - d - A -A F BA C - C Pro... i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. my computer is brand new, about 3 weeks old. it's a toshiba satellite running windows vista. every so often it will just randomly go black on me and nothing I do will make it come back on. I have to do a hard shut off and then restart. my father in law said he had this problem when he bought his laptop and that it is because of vista. has anyone else had this problem? he said once he downgraded to XP it quit doing it. let me know if you need any additional info, I've scanned the computer, it is virus free and spyware/adware ect free. no other problems, just this weird quirk. how much damage will this do to my computer if I keep having to restart it without properly closing windows?

A:Computer Randomly Shutting Off

Apparently there's a Release Candidate for Vista Service Pack 1 that you can
download. I'd read the stuff on microsoft web site about it and see if your
problem is in the fixes before installing.

I'm in the habit of never using hibernate or power saver features because
I've seen a lot of problems reported. But I only use desktops. If I had
a notebook I'd prolly look into it in more detail.

I don't see any thing malware related in the log. I think you would be better posting in the hardware forum. Give details on sounds, BSOD screens etc.

Hey all So I've shutting Computer down randomly had my PC for a couple years now but in the past - months maybe longer I can't remember but definitely past - months it's had this nasty habit of literally just turning itself off I could be playing a game watching YouTube browsing or even just idle on the desktop with nothing running apart from background processes It'll shut off It doesn't discriminate It doesn't happen all the time though Sometimes it won't do it sometimes it'll do it or times in a row about minutes in between shut downs But after a few shut downs it'll sort itself out and won't turn off on its own again So I thought initially that it might be something wrong with my OS or a virus or so I've just reformatted Computer randomly shutting down But as I was transferring my files back to my main drive boom it did it again I've pulled my computer tower away from any blockages it is under my desk but it has Computer randomly shutting down about quot at least on each side for air flow But that hasn't helped anything I'm now coming to the conclusion that it's either PSU related maybe the PSU is faulty and not supplying a steady voltage or it's heat related I don't have any software to monitor those readings though It's worth adding that when I reformatted I made an internal partition using Win s disk management system which I put my backups on I then reformatted C and reinstalled there I then copied my backups off of my temp partition and then expanded C back to its full size Any help would be greatly appreciated I think I've mentioned everything I think is relevant Specs Win Enterprise x AMD FX- octocore processor GHz gb DDR RAM DirectX NVidia GeForce GTX ti gb TB HDD SATA Standard in case fan cooling This was a prebuilt purchase from a website so they did the compatibility checks etc I've never had an issue with it until now

okay so this just started up recently where my laptop seems to get tired of being on and shuts off by itself I updated all of my virus protection and even tried to scan my harddrive in safe mode but what ends up happening is that my computer half-way through the scan gets tired and shuts off so i m not sure if there is a virus or not b c there s never enough time for it to scan my harddrive completely basically this happened after i updated my itunes and deleted massive amounts of programs and did a disk cleanup as well as a defrag i m pretty sure that my computer shouldn t get upset about computer off shutting randomly this but it does so does anyone have any suggestions b c i really need computer shutting off randomly to keep my computer on for a v long time when i write essays or have downloads and i really can t have it shutting down for no good reasons other than perhaps my fan isn t working properly therefore my processor is overheated help please nbsp

A:computer shutting off randomly

It does sound like either a Heat issue or a Power issue. Most other problems would result in a BSOD that would give some cryptic msg. I take it that you have auto-restart turned off, since you use the term "shuts off", rather than "restarts".

Try running the system with the case open, and if possible a fan blowing cool air into it. Also, do check to see that your fans are ALL working correctly:
1. Processor Chip Fan
2. Case Fan
3. PS Fan
4. Video GPU if any.

Since yesterday, my comp (Vaio laptop, Vista) has shut itself down without warning three times. After it did it twice yesterday, I installed Norton antivirus thinking it was a virus. I ran a full scan and everything came back okay, no viruses, but it did another random shut down today.

It does not restart itself, it shuts down completely. The first two times there was no error message, but today a window popped up saying "windows experienced an unexpected shutdown". It was one of the boxes that say to check for solution, do an error report etc, and I did all that but it didn't seem to really do anything.

This comp has had some issues in the past, and I'm really wondering if this is some kind of hardware issue. I'd really appreciate some advise on what the problem could be, things to check for, and how to fix it if possible.

A:Computer shutting down randomly, please help

The first thing to check would be heat. If the CPU gets too hot the system will shut down.

FYI, the fact that Norton didn't find anything doesn't really mean much. But it's certainly possible your system is clean. The point is I wouldn't trust a single application to say your system is clean.

My computer will be running fine and then it will cut off. It has done this over and over. Do you think that this an issue with the power supply? The error reads: Shut down due to environmental Temperature and Have PC Serviced immediately.

A:My computer is randomly shutting down

You are over heating. Your best bet would be to open the case if this is a desktop and get a can of air and blow the dust from your fans and cpu and see if this helps. You may even need to replace the cpu thermal paste.

for the past couple of weeks my computer has been shutting down randomly.

I'm running XP and right before the computer shuts down, the tower will make a small clicking sound, the screen screen/mouse freezes and the taskbar reverts to a windows 98 format (yellow squares for the different windows, different font).

It will then boot as normal.

one funny thing that I've noticed is that even though I am running firefox, in the task manager processes internet explorer will be in the top 2/3 processes taking up the most memory.
I've run adaware, spybot search and destroy and hijackthis.

any help/ideas are appreciated.

A:computer randomly shutting down

Mine has just being doing that and then i started getting missing .dll messages upon boot up. Which to me said the Hard Drive.

Personally i would say its your hard drive on its way out, but if anyone else has any more ideas on what it could be listen tothem before me, as a new HD is money where Adaware programs are free, well trils of them anyway

Right i wasn t sure if i should reply to another persons post as it seems a few people are having this issue with their system so i just thought i would post my own My Computer has been Computer down! randomly shutting running Computer randomly shutting down! fine since it was put together by a friend of mine around months ago For the last month or so it has been randomly shutting down it looses all power and just goes off I can still see the lights on the motherboard indicating that it has power going to it but i cant switch it on for a while unless i unplug the power so it looses all power going to the system then i plug it all back in This first happened when playing Warcraft with nothing else running I then found out that it was impossible to run Warcraft and doing anything else at the same time like listening to music watching a movie browsing the net or running a scan The system wouldn t have any of it and would shut down I then decide to stop playing this game and for some reason the issue went away One day whilst playing World of warcraft it started happening again I m sure it was the only thing running but as I m a bit of a gamer i do intend to play a lot so its ironic This fault could happen once an hour it could happen once a day it could even happen once a week it s completely random But for the last week or so its happens on a regular basis to the point that i can only play my games World of Warcraft from minutes to an hour or so I have tested my system in many ways to try and work this out but i don t really have the knowledge that some others do so i thought i would post here and pick someone else s brain First of all my spec Case - CM II OS - Windows -bit Processor - AMD phenom II x T Overclocked at GHz Motherboard - M A TD-V EVO USB RAM - x GB Kingston Hyper DDR - GPU - ATI Radeon HD series double slot PSU - Powercool W Quad Rail CPU Cooling - Antec kuhler h o SSD - OCZ Vertex series GB Sata II HDD amp - Barracuda SATA Gb s -TB Hard Drive RAID Things i have tried In the last days of using my system First of all i tried to work out if it was software so i loaded up World of Warcraft and started playing It was playing fine for minutes or so so i decided to run Itunes and play some music whilst playing Apparently that was a bad idea and the PC shut down I then decided to Load my game back up and continue playing whilst browsing the net using Opera It didn t do anything after an hour or so so i decided to watch a TV program using VLC After watching - episodes it then shuts down I then turn it all back on and decide to watch some episodes again and run a scan on my system all goes well with both running at the same time and randomly later that night it turns off again whilst only watching something on VLC I have updated everything I m using i have even UN-installed my programs and re-installed them one by one but it still happens Ive even updated my drivers This fault strikes me at complete random doesn t seem to matter what I m running it just turns off when it wants to It has also shut down while using all of my programs listed above one at a time although to my knowledge i don t think it has shut down just browsing the net I have cleaned my case and components Can of air is always good and there is nothing wrong inside the system no dust at all All fans are working and the temperature looks fine CPU is sitting at around - I get these readings either from the BIOS or when using SpeedFan depending on what I m doing at the time Things i haven t tried yet that I m thinking of doing Re-installing Windows Lost my CD Changing components I don t have spare components or the money to buy them BIOS Tweaking I don t have the knowledge to start poking around in there tbh I have asked a few friends of mine what they think it might be and they tell me it could be absolutely anything the joys of computers eh I have been a huge fan of Forums like Techspot but never had the issues of actually needing to post on one so here is my... The first thing I would try is the overclocking on your CPU, this could be causing some instability so reset it to default and see how it goes.

Hi
My friend was experiencing a similar problem and it turned out to be the CPU fan not being firmly attached.

I think you're on the right lines as regards troubleshooting. Physically check ALL connections are seated correctly. Remove CMOS battery to reset settings.

Once battery back in and it reboots make sure it has lost the date and time to confirm reset.

Enter BIOS setup screen (if you can get this far) and look for Hardware Monitor or similar. Keep an eye on the CPU temp. It should remain fairly constant as not under load.

In my experience it is usually but not always related to either CPU temperature or the PSU being faulty. Over the years I have had more faulty PSUs than an other component.

I seen on some other forums that it may be a fan and cooling issue, but I have no idea if this picture I took shows if my computer is overheating or if it is not overheating. The issue usually happens when I am playing SWTOR, this issue is getting kinda bad and would like to fix it before some serious damage happens.

A:Computer shutting down randomly

If SpeedFan is giving you accurate readings, then I can safely say that none of these temperatures are anywhere close to being too high.

What does your system consist of? Did you build it, or is it a pre-built? It's good to know as much as possible about the hardware.

This started this past week sometime. My computer randomly shut itself down one night I was playing Americas Army 3 I think. I rebooted the computer and it came up with a blue screen but not the BSoD. I restarted the computer and it worked fine for the night. It happened a few nights ago to my brother while he was on the computer and wouldnt run properly for the rest of the night. It just started happening tonight and it happened twice. Any suggestions?

A:Computer Shutting Down Randomly

Have you considered the possibility of a cooling issue? Problems like this can arise if your computer's CPU gets too hot. It has an in-built safety mechanism that shuts the computer off if the temperature exceeds a certain amount.

Few things to do:
1.Download a CPU temperature monitoring program and see the CPU's temperature. A quick google search will yield many results, some of these programs are free too.
2.Open up the CPU case and check for dust buildup around the fans, etc. Make sure that when the computer is running, the fans are running smoothly, too.

Also, try using the computer once the case is open. If your problem goes away, then it's almost certainly a cooling problem.

Lately, my computer has been shutting down by itself randomly. When it starts back up, it shows me the "Your computer has not shut down properly." It might be from overheating, I'm not sure. My room is the hottest room in my house, and now that I've turned the heat on, it makes my room hot, so maybe that's why my computer is overheating? What should I do? I guess I could go get a can of compressed air but it might not be exactly overheating.

Any suggestions or help? Thanks.

Hey there,

First of all I'm not sure this is the place to be posting this but it's the best suited sub-forum I could think of.

As of recent the computer that my parents and siblings use has started randomly shutting off (or at least I think it does). What it does is it goes from working normally to the screen going black and then in the top right corner it's constantly switching between Analog and Digital. I'm not sure what this means but this is the best way I can describe it. I'm currently in the process of making sure the video card drivers are up to date, I have run scans with ccleaner etc and have even reformated the computer to original factory settings. I'm pretty lost with what to do so I feel the need to ask for help. Any input very appreciated!

Cheers,
Simon

A:Computer randomly shutting off

What is the make/model of the PC? If custom built post the specs.

When this happens does it work correctly after the restart?

So the fans and lights are still on but you just loose video? Has the inside of the PC been cleaned of dust/debris lately?

I built my own computer a month or so ago and it has been running perfectly fine till now.
I installed Limewire today and right after that my computer started to shut off randomly, sometimes before Vista even loads up!
I was able to get into Safemode to remove Limewire, thinking that was the problem... but it shut off again afterwards.
Its been doing this all day!
The system isnt dirty at all and the fans -seem- to work fine.

This is what I have.. for what I remember atleast lol.

Recently my computer started shutting down randomly. I've downloaded Bluescreenviewer which said that the driver causing the crash was totrec8.sys. I've since deleted the driver, but the computer still shuts down on its own. Two days ago it shut down at least 6 times.

Attachment 216157

Attachment 216159

The computer is x86 64 bit. Original installed version is Windows 7. Age 2 years. The age of OS is 2 years, haven't reinstalled it.

A:Computer shutting down randomly

Did you delete totrec8.sys - or did you uninstall Total Recorder? If you didn't uninstall Total Recorder please do so now.

The system is x64 (64 bit). x86 is 32 bit

Please ensure that Driver Verifier is turned off. Do this by opening the program and selecting "Delete existing settings'. Then click on Finish and reboot the system for the changes to take effect(?affect?).

Perfmon shows video card issues. Please:
- uninstall all ATI video driver stuff
- reinstall the DRIVERS ONLY using this procedure: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure

SP1 isn't installed, please do the following:

Quote:
Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1
1. Visit the PC manufacturer's website and update ALL drivers. DO NOT use Windows Update or the "Update drivers" function of Device Manager.
2. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)
3. Visit Windows Update and get all updates (may take repeated visits)
4. Visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates). Read these notes for installing SP1: Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center
5. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates. May take repeated visits, but keep it up until you get several "Windows is updated" results.
If you're having difficulties with installing a Service Pack, please use the SURTool from this link: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?
Also, check out this troubleshooting link from Microsoft: Troubleshoot problems installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

I have had limited success in installing updates/Service Packs when using a "clean boot". I suspect that I'm just bypassing the problem - and that it can come back to bite me in the butt later on.

Wasn't able to get much info on the memory dumps as most appear corrupted (and they crash my debugger). But here's what I got:

A:Computer Randomly Shutting Down

the way to make it not to shut down would be to up the voltage to the processor but with the questions u are asking I am going to say if u mess with it u will burn the computer up so turn things back like they were and leave things like they were.

I have a 4 year old Toshiba Satellite i5 that had predominantly been run almost as a desktop. We have it hooked up to a monitor and only use it as a lap top when travelling. Over the past few months it has been randomly shutting down. At first we thought it was because we were running it with the lid down so we starting running it with the lid cracked and that seemed to help initially. About two weeks ago it started doing it again. The events have absolutely no pattern any commonalities. I am fairly novice when it comes to fixing anything on computers, I know how to do a disk check, clear my cache, etc. I was able to run a system diagnotic, but I don't know what to do with any of the data. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Computer randomly shutting down, not due to overheating

Hello and welcome MrsA08 now first up some more system specs please and the PART NO on the back sticker (see pic) because it really pins the machine down for drivers etc etc

SYSTEM SPECS

mate can we have some system specs please as what you have postedgives us not that much to work with and given there are so many manufacturersof components and configurations that do influence what goes on within anygiven machine and OS.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

Now when you say it is not heating just how do you know that because you have not specified the temp of the machine parts CPU and motherboard etc If you have run something like Speccy then le t us know otherwise run it and post back the results https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

If you would please read this and ost back what you see in the part where I mention looking into the outlet air vent.

CLEANING A LAPTOP FAN & COOLER RAD

The thing you do is to turnover the laptop and shine a very bright light into the air intake aperture (youwill see the fan there) and then while doing that look at the outlet vent onthe end of the laptop you should see the light quite clearly shining throughthe cooling " radiator" if not - it is clogged and will need cleaningas will probably the fan opening.

You can do this by blowingit out using a compressed air can in short bursts.

BUT ONE WORD OF WARNING DO NOT blow the air into the fan opening withoutinserting say a plastic rod or large cable tie to stop the fan from spinning asthe air blast will spin the fan at a very high speed that it is not designed totake and may wreck the bearing!!

To clean the slots in the radiator use a pipecleaner or one of those craft covered wire sticks - they are referred to aschinelle sticks - see pic. But do be very careful not to be overly heavy handedyou will find it might take a second or two or a few minutes to clear theheavier build ups.

Could you also test the adaptor volts and use this for us to see what the battery condition is.
Run this and when you get to Sensors scroll down until you get to the battery cell conditions / capacities

Using HW Info

PART A:

You can test the volts onthe PSU with HW Info HWiNFO,HWiNFO32/64 - Download <download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensorsand scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts aredoing see my pic. In my pic the section (Nuvoton)with VBATT is a dead give away you are in the section for the rail voltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up often is ITE

Now the voltage on thedifferent rails have to be within 5% =+/- of what is required or the machinewill not work properly if at all.

See this for the railvoltage info

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-specifications-atx-reference,3061.html (Section 2.)

The original right handwindow shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at thecomponents in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel

FOR OTHER COMPONENTS

PART B:

Open each small squarewith + in it on the section the components are in and then click on theindividual component/s (it willhighlight in blue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of detailsincluding brands speeds and other essential info that particular device. Seepic for example.

The pic is of my Asus rigged much the same way as you do yours but I ma interested in the condition of that battery - the volts should all fall within that +/- 5% of the stated voltage

Hey,

Lately my computer has been randomly turning off the screens, along with USB.
The screens light turns orange, and the lights on all USB devices turn off.

Just yesterday I had a BSOD, but did not write down the error.

Even once I turn off the computer and try turning it back on, I can hear it starting up, but nothing happens as far as the screens go (The lights stay orange). After leaving it for a few hours, it start up fine again

I reset the BIOS to defaults, defragged the disk, ran CCleaner registry cleaner, scanned for viruses, yet it is still doing it.

Any idea what this could be?
It is a custom built PC using two screens. I will try to get specs when it allows me to start it up again.

My computer keeps randomly shutting of when I am using it.

It's usually at random times and I have to power it back on every single time. It doesn't say "shutting down" everything literally just turns off.
It happens every few minutes to every few hours.
What do I do to make it stop? It keeps happening when im doing important things. Causing me alot of stress.

A:[SOLVED] My computer keeps randomly shutting off?

Hello,

What is the make/model of the PC? If custom built post the specs.

If this is a laptop have the vents and fans been cleaned lately? Caring for your notebook computer.

If this is a desktop PC has the inside of the case been cleaned lately.

Random shutdowns can usually be attributed to overheating or power issues.

Download and install HWMonitor and post a screenshot of the program. How to Post a Screenshot | Tech Support Forum

A:Computer freezing and randomly shutting off

mind following the instructions here in their entirety so we can get a good solid report of everything going on? Thanks.

I will make initial notice that if your system is hanging during POST, than you must assuredly have a hardware problem. It's just a matter of what hardware is failing. The first thing you should do is open the chassis and ensure everything is connected good by doing a doublecheck and reconnecting them all. This means re-seating cards and reconnecting power and data cables.

No overclocks, only BIOS settings changed were the voltages on my ram (over a month ago)

edit: thinking it might be my PSU failing... should i just buy another one? if so what would be compatible>?

btw, eventviewer doesn't point to anything specific just says the shutdown was unexpected and i ran sfc scannow already.

A:Computer Randomly Shutting Down, No BSOD.

Hello magepker mate just what are the temps of the set up? Did you get teh temps off the BIOS or run some app like Speccy if not try this for the temps and run a scan with your security or an on call scanner and then look at the temps

http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

If it is the PSU then have you checked to volts yet? if not then check out this PSU - Jump Start < DO NOT open the PSU when you do this (in fact you can do this with the PSU in situ) just start the PSU as described then check the individual leads for volts. However this does not mean that if the volts are there the current will be but it is a start. The volts you are looking for are
YELLOW = 12v RED = 5v and ORANGE = 3v (+/- 0.5v) anything significantly below those volts means the PSU is suspect.

This has been happening on and off the past month or two but last night it seemed to have escalated. My computer randomly shuts off and when I powered it up this morning there was another user account created for the computer with admin powers. Not only this but when I signed into my account all of my startup programs were disabled, a lot of websites that I frequent daily will no longer load but they will load on my laptop, and sometimes when I log on my hard drive will have a few gb less than when I went to bed with. With all these factors I imagine that there is something in my computer causing trouble. I've tried scanning my computer with multiple software but they've always detected nothing. I've used NOD32, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Super AntiSpyware.

A:computer randomly shutting off and other problems.

Hi dotphil, and welcome to the forums!! My name is bloopie and I'll be assisting you for the time being.Computers randomly restarting can be caused by excessive heat and other things. Please list the make and model of your computer. Also, have you seen any blue screen's that flashed on screen before it shuts off? Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.
GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning. Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread. This is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications. If you cannot get on-line to publish the information, and wish to attach it as a text file to your post, then please edit it to ensure that you do not include your Windows Key.bloopie

I have an HP Elite t Windows bit The problem started as random computer shutdowns where the computer would completely randomly, now. down getting Computer shutting BSODs lose power for no reason It was like somebody pulled the cord At first there were no error messages or BSODs I simply had to restart and then it would work for a while It had been fine for the last two or three weeks then it crashed again this morning I could not get the computer to boot up Computer shutting down randomly, getting BSODs now. Then I started getting Computer shutting down randomly, getting BSODs now. BSOD c a HP told me I should do a complete system recovery I backed up my data and did the system recovery It completed the recovery but when it was booting after that I got the BSOD again It went away so quickly I couldn't see the error I tried doing system recovery two more times and both times it quit in the middle of it I don't lose power it just goes to a black screen I am completely frustrated at this point and don't know what to do

A:Computer shutting down randomly, getting BSODs now.

ill keep the nerdyness out of this as nobody normally cares about it ^_^
c000021a errors are normally caused when userlogin/security can't be verified. windows then switches to kernal mode and boom bsod.
HP were half way right in telling you what to do, however most recovery programs tend to skip parts of the process and this is one of the things it tends to keep the same.
one option is to do a fresh install of windows if you have a disc or the other option is to boot the pc and press f8 before windows start. then at the prompt screen select advanced options and then select last known good configuration.

I apologize if this is in the Shutting BSOD [HELP] - Randomly NO Computer Off . [HELP] . wrong forum as I do not have [HELP] . Computer Shutting Off Randomly - NO BSOD . [HELP] a BSOD However it's still a system crash which I need help diagnosing and I did not feel there was a more appropriate sub-forum Kindly state so if there is I have a basic stock HP Pavilion m n PC I moved about a month ago and out of no where it started randomly shutting off with NO BSOD most commonly when I'm watching a movie browsing the internet or doing any day-to-day tasks I'm fairly familiar with all things computer but not having any BSOD to work with inhibited me from easily diagnosing the problem I did a clean install of Windows but it kept crashing I assumed this meant it's the hardware My first thought was heat I checked the temperatures on all the sensors everything from a cold start to seconds before it crashed but all the temperatures were within range even under heavy load It doesn't seem to crash as frequently or at all when I leave the computer idle it only seems to crash when I'm doing something on it But assuming the sensor readouts are accurate I moved on The only way to successfully reproduce the crash is to plug in my D-LINK USB Wireless Network adapter I have no idea why this causes it to crash as it happens with or without software drivers installed but it does I figured this might mean it's the power supply I bought a new one plugged it in but the crashes still happened It wasn't the power supply This leaves me confused I've exhausted all knowledge I have about computers I don't have the finances to buy a new computer so I really need to diagnose this problem Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try next Anything helps Thank you very much

A:[HELP] . Computer Shutting Off Randomly - NO BSOD . [HELP]

Quote:
The only way to successfully reproduce the crash is to plug in my D-LINK USB Wireless Network adapter.

Win7 doesn't like these devices and will spit out BSOD's in a heartbeat with or without drivers installed (Vista drivers just make it worse!). Here's my rant about these devices:

Quote:
I do not recommend using wireless USB devices. Especially in Win7 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 - and using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

Please provide this information even though you're not experiencing BSOD's: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

My computer is shutting down at random. Just going black. But when I restart, it starts up again with no errors and no problems (until the next time).

We've checked all leads and connections. They all seem to be fine.

I can't understand why it's not causing problems on restart either. Also, if I've been working on something, I don't lose my work. I can go straight back in to where I left off (after the computer has restarted as it should).

I'm not well up on technical terms but I'm not quite a beginner and understand some terms.

Any help appreciated.

It's a windows issue as i ran Xenserver 6.1 on this machine and never had a single shut down.
running windows it might shut down as much as 6 times an hour. It may run for days without an issue. including the logs from the SF_Diagnostic tool and maybe someone else can find what I can't find. Must be a driver or Windows update.

A:BSOD Computer shutting down randomly

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Do some Disc checks.
Re-seat the sata and power.

Run chkdsk /f/r, following the option two of the tutorial Disk Check
Seatool for dos: SeaTools | Seagate download
Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.
Post screenshots of both your HDDs using CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World.

A:Brand new Computer shutting down randomly, help!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

The fact that your computer is new, means it will be under warranty.

I suggest you rma it, back to wherever you bought it.

If you try doing anything else to it, you may void the warranty.

A:Computer Screwing Up, Shutting Down Randomly

Hello Robslob24Sorry for the delayed response but the Hijackthis forum has been extremely busy as of late and we are all volunteers.Nothing of concern in your log. The symptoms you describe could be malware related or they could be due to hardware or overheating problems caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing power supply, underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty drivers, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware, etc. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to restart on a more regular basis. Some rootkits can trigger BSODs, shutdowns and error messages so lets do a couple scans for that. Please download AVG Anti-Rootkit and save to your desktopDouble click avgarkt-setup-1.1.0.42.exe to install. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-RootkitAccept the license and follow the prompts to install. You will be asked to reboot to finish the installation so click "Finish".After rebooting, double-click the icon for AVG Anti-Rootkit on your desktop. You will see a window with four buttons at the bottom. Click "Search For Rootkits" and the scan will begin. You will see the progress bar moving from left to right. The scan will take some so be patient and let it finish. When the scan has finished, a small window will open so you can view the results.Right click and select "Save Result To File".By default the file will be saved with a .csv extension. (You can use notepad to open the .cvs file)Copy and paste the results in your next reply. If anything was found, click "Remove selected items"If nothing was found, please click the "Perform in-depth Search" saving anything found to file as before.Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while scanning. If the scan is performed while the computer is in use, false positives may appear in the scan results. This is caused by files or registry entries being deleted automatically.Next, download rootchk.exe and save to your desktopImportant: Temporarily disable any real-time monitoring programs (see note below).Disconnect from the Internet.Double-click on rootchk.exe to run the program.A command prompt window will open as the scan begins and then close. When the scan is completed, a logfile named rootlog.txt will open and be saved to the root directory usually C:\. Copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply.Re-enable active protection on any program you temporarily disabled.Note: To avoid false positives, it is important that you temporarily disable ZoneAlarm Pro firewall or any other security program that protects your registry before running a rootchk scan. Click on this link to see a list of other programs that should be disabled. If your not finding any malware then its sounds like the latter problem.

So my computer monitor shuts off randomly while gpu stress testing and sometimes while watching videos or surfing web. I sent my gpu in and they send there were no problems but the problem still persists, when the monitor shuts off my computer mostly shuts off then It takes about 5-10 tries to get the computer to boot. I think it may have to do with over heating since I only have 2 fans and I am getting an nzxt source 210 with 4-5 fans

Specs:
intel pentium g2030-stock cooler
gigabyte r9 270x 2gb
evga 430w psu
1tb wd hard drive
8gb crucial ballistix sport ram
diy pc case (brand name) with 2 fans (pre installed)

My computer keeps turning off and rebooting at random intervals. The error I see in the logs is:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 041212-94177-01.

Every once in a while it gives a BSOD with the error:

DRIVER.IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The Memory Dump is below for debugging.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit.
