Preferred Solution: Server 2003 Terminal Server cannot access admin tools

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Users connecting to the terminal server report major performance issues when using MS office, Web browsing, outlook attachment downloads take forever, etc. Avast and MS security essentials scan clean but the current MBAM installation has become corrupt. Attempts to install new version of MBAM result in 'Access Denied' msg. I am logged in as local adminstrator so permissions should not be an issue. Really looking to avoid formatting this production server and re-installing all the apps. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi,

I am not able to connect to OPC server for non admin user in windows server 2003.

I get Runtime error '-536608665(e0040067)':
Failed to connect OPC server.
The system returned the following error message:
Access is denied

But i can connect non admin user to opc server in Windows xp

Is it possible for non admin user to connect OPC server in windows server 2003?

OPC server and client are on same system

Please give me your feedback

Thanks!
Santosh

A:Non Admin not able to connect OPC server in Windows Server 2003

From what I've read on this thread, you'll need to set computer-wide DCOM security permissions. You'll want to peruse that thread.

On another note, this isn't really the best spot for this question. An error message isn't a crash, hang or bsod, and the situation is more relevant to specifically the Windows Server section (even though OPC servers can and often do exist in many client versions of Windows). You'll be able to receive more help there, as it's pertinent to your needs.

Hopefully someone can assist I have a user who has been set up to access an application through a terminal server She is in the same group s as everyone else so the permissions are the same When she logs into the terminal server launches Won't Unless Server Terminal OCX Admin on Register the application and then attempts to enter data she receives the following error frmBOL GridSetup - Component Grid OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered a file is missing or invalid I attempted to register the OCX but the user wasn t an admin on the server I made her an admin logged off and back on and then properly registered the file Tested and it worked Logged out as user removed admin privileges for her OCX Won't Register Unless Admin on Terminal Server and logged her back in but then she received the same error - OCX not correctly registered Any thoughts The part that s puzzling to me is that her perms should be no different than anyone else I ve removed and readded her blown away the profile but no luck The only solution is to set her as an admin which to me is not truly a solution It s definitely not something I want to do Thanks in advance Mike nbsp

Hi guys,

We have recently upgraded all of our clients machines from XP to Win7 pro. and left all our servers on Win2003 st. edition. While on XP, users were able to connect and print on our terminal server which is running Win2003 but we have been having problems after the clients were upgraded to win7. User's printers are not being redirected now. Im not too sure if this is windows7 with win2003 issue or just HP drivers issue because all the printers are HP. I did try and find most of the HP win7 drivers to isolate the problem and I even downloaded HP univ. drivers but still the printer were not being redirected. What could be the issue here, I'm really confused.

Please help. Thanks

Recently while installing Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server I have been losing my administrator shares. I.E. c$, D$, ADMIN$, etc. I haven't noticed at what point this happens, but I think it might be the stage where I set system policies for terminal users. How can I get the shares back. Particularly the ADMIN$ share, as this one is reserved and does not allow me to recreate it. I really do not want to start over with this install for the third time!

A:Terminal Server 2003 BSOD

Outlook is named as the process calling for the stop, but that does not mean it was the cause. A rouge driver that overwrites it's address space into another drive/process's assigned space is usually the cause. Outlook would then call for the stop because it see's the data in that address as corrupt. Or in other words the Office apps are left holding the bag.
Driver verifier would be the next step unless you can isolate a recent driver/program/update install to around the time the stop orders started.

One other thing to mention is that we at TSF like most forums provide free support to home users not to business users.

The situation is this...

I have a client who wants to install a server PC where they can use remote desktop connection, needs to be Win2003 as they need to have simultanious logins - in itself this is no problem, they are behind a router but setting up NAPT is no problem also.

My problem is that they already have a leased server also running Win2003 that has GPS tracking facility and is only used for this purpose - they can't also use it as a file server, and they are currently running it as a Terminal Server with RDC.

My problem is that I want to have both servers behind the same router/firewall but also be able to use remote desktop through the web and have users able to log into either of the servers?

A:Windows 2003 Terminal Server RDC

I believe you can change the port that Terminal Services runs on. But this would require them to always enter that port in when they use the client.

Is there a way to limit what starts up when a person logs into terminal server on my server? I have services that startup when I initially log in, but everyone that logs in after me says that they are getting messages that these servises can't start because they are already running. Now keep in mind that these are not windows services, they are programs that I have installed for the software that we use.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

We have to setup terminal services for about 20 people. Only 10 people will be connected at any time.

Does this mean I only need 10 User CAL's or do I need 20 User CAL's 1 for each connection even though only 10 will be in use at any given time.

I don't want to use Per device because these users jump around.

A:Windows 2003 Terminal server CALs

I believe that "per user" is just how many people are connected... Not how many people do connect. That is the way that I always assumed. I know that 2000 didn't care... The licenses were just a piece of paper.

Device-based versus User-based Terminal Server CALs
Two types of Terminal Server Client Access Licenses are available: TS Device CAL or TS User CAL.

• A TS Device CAL permits one device (used by any user) to conduct Windows Sessions on any of your servers.

• A TS User CAL permits one user (using any device) to conduct Windows Sessions on any of your servers.
You may choose to use a combination of TS Device CALs and TS User CALs simultaneously with the server software.

Hello - I ve currently got a problem at work that is giving me a few sleepless nights Basically I support a specialised tax application that has been around for a number of years and is solid and of good quality However we Server Services 2003/Terminal Windows have one user who has developed a problem recently This is our only User who is running Windows Server and Terminal Services Basically the system had been working fine for a number of years but recently developed a problem The User has not Windows Server 2003/Terminal Services made any changes to the configuration other than the addition of Windows Server Service Pack I can replicate the problem by denying Write access to the key system folder but I ve got the User to check and he can write to files within the folder in question outside of the application I know that Windows Server 2003/Terminal Services Windows Server Service Pack did introduce a number of improvements to Security but have not found anything to explain the problem The application does make use of the Registry which may be relevant Any ideas pointers would be very gratefully received Many thanks Steve W nbsp

Update - I've made some progress on this. The problem is being caused by the implementation of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. I know this update made a number of changes to Security and I suspect the answer lies in this area.

Hello,

I am dealing with what looks to be the directrdr issue. The difference here is that it is on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. As all the other postings, I have run numerous scans of SuperAntispyware, MalwareBytes, and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise in both normal and safe modes. I can not get to the root of what is kicking it off after I think I've beat the thing. The difference from reading a lot of the postings is that some of the tools you need me to run do not work with Server 2003 such as DDS. Please advise as to what you would like to see from me. We have been working this problem at the clients location for a week including deep into the night(s) to no avail. Any help you can provide quickly will be much appreciated...

Thank you!

A:Directrdr on Windows 2003 Terminal Server

I see this has been moved due to lack of logs but as explained in my first post I am unable to run the logs requested. Will this be moved back to the original forum once I am told which specific logs (which run on server 2003) to post? Since the post was moved, should I have gotten an e-mail as I do have notification turned on? Thank you for your quick response.

Hello all I m a long time lurker but first time infection 2003 Zbot on server. terminal Windows poster I Zbot infection on Windows 2003 terminal server. used to consider myself fairly competent in exorcising malware demons from people s PCs I certainly have enough people bringing them to me for that purpose but my old tricks don t seem to be keeping pace with the new threats Recently we had a Zbot outbreak on our network that pointed out glaring security holes in our defenses that existed due Zbot infection on Windows 2003 terminal server. to Zbot infection on Windows 2003 terminal server. lack of administrative manpower and an ill-advised managerial directive to favor data accessibility and application communication over proper security practices After three of us losing an entire weekend to isolation cleanup and reimaging of servers where necessary we are changing our ways and have all servers running the latest McAfee Virusscan Enterprise with maximum protection have closed down shares of system volumes and have a renewed focus on proper security practices That being said we are still not completely rid of the Zbot infection The terminal server upon which we conduct our day to day activities not online banking for now for obvious reasons is still attempting to infect the executables of other servers on the network one in particular seems to be its primary target The McAfee on-access scanner on that server seems to be detecting and cleaning the infections but some evil is definitely still at work - in TCPview I can see connections being established with unknown IPs one of them in Russia which are definitely not legitimate traffic Not to mention the fraudulent charge that showed up on my corporate credit card I have tried to watch for suspicious activity in Process Explorer but don t really know what to look for The odd thing not odd for a virus I guess but perplexing and annoying is that nothing we ve tried can find a problem on the terminal server in question We have done in-depth scanning with McAfee and the command line scanner and various other tools GetSusp autoruns GMER under the direction of McAfee support and cannot find the source of the unauthorized activity I for my own part have tried a number of tools that have been helpful with PCs SuperAntiSpyware MBAM and Spybot and while the first scan with SAS cleaned up the usual web surfing crap subsequent scans with MBAM and Spybot came back clean I don t think it would be advisable to run ComboFix on a terminal server as its use even on a PC is recommended only under the guidance of a trained security professional I have looked in the most obvious places for rogue programs starting with Windows but I just cannot find it McAfee will not escalate the case until we can provide a malicious sample which is a huge catch since neither the software the first-level tech nor we can determine which is the malicious file I just don t know what else to try at this point so I am humbly submitting this request for assistance It seems that our Zbot variant is completely evading detection on the terminal server - I have read that even with a fully patched OS and up to date antivirus the detection rate for this virus is less than and likely closer to I would appreciate any input that might help us in isolating and removing the infection whether it be another program to try another place to look or a procedure to follow I will be somewhat limited in what I can do immediately by this being a production server but will attempt to perform any suggested procedures remotely after hours Thanks in advance for your help - I know someone out there must have the knowledge skills and tools to find this thing and kill it Bonus points and a beer to anyone who can ship me the head of the bastard who coded the Zbot construction kit in a box with a pretty Christmas bow on it I want the last three weeks of my life back

Hello,I would like to run 2 tools and see if there is improvement. Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply. Please perform a scan with Eset Online Antiivirus Scanner. This scan requires Internet Explorer to work. Vista/Windows 7 users need to run Internet Explorer as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run As Administrator from the context menu.Click the green button.Read the End User License Agreement and check the box: Check .Click the button.Accept any security warnings from your browser.Check Check Remove found threats and Scan potentially unwanted applications. (If given the option, choose "Quarantine" instead of delete.)Click the Start button.ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. If offered the option to get information or buy software at any point, just close the window. The scan will take a while so be patient and do NOT use the computer while the scan is running. Keep all other programs and windows closed. When the scan completes, push Push , and save the file to your desktop as ESETScan.txt. Push the button, then Finish.Copy and paste the contents of ESETScan.txt in your next reply.Note: A log.txt file will also be created and automatically saved in the C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\ folder. If you did not save the ESETScan log, click > Run..., then type or copy and paste everything in the code box below into the Open dialogue box:C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txtClick Ok and the scan results will open in Notepad.Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.-- Some online scanners will detect existing anti-virus software and refuse to cooperate. You may have to disable the real-time protection components of your existing anti-virus and try running the scan again. If you do this, remember to turn them back on after you are finished.NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

I manage AD and 30+ servers at a community college. I just got a new computer for my office and loaded Windows 7. I also loaded the Remote Server Admin Tools so that I may manage my servers. The old Windows XP Admin Tools had a tool called IP Address Management. This tool combined DNS, DHCP, and WINS management all in the same window and the DHCP would keep the server setups on exit. I can't find this tool in the RS Admin Tools for Windows 7. Does anyone know where I can get a tool like this for Windows 7?

Thanks,

Trying to put Office 2010 on a machine running Windows Server 2003 R2 (SP2) with Terminal Services.

The machine will be set up so that anyone requiring the usage of Office 2010 can use RDP to log onto the server and use the programs there.

1) Do I need a specific version of Office 2010 to make this work?
2) Is this a violation of the license agreement for Office 2010? (Obviously I care about this less than the first part, but I'd like to know.)

The only reason I ask is because apparently my friend tried to install a version of Office 2010 we had lying around and it apparently gave him some weird error about Terminal Services... haven't seen the error myself but I thought I'd ask before I try this again.

Not sure about 2003, but with 2008 the Volume License Enterprise version of office is required.
Investigate that aspect. we tried installing office pro 2007 on our TS with Windows 2008 and it balked so i did some research and there are several posts that said it had to be VL Ent.

I have this application where I want a new hire to fill out an Access record for their application. I want the HR receptionist to be able to control that new hire's use of the computer. I thought I would have the NH (New Hire) go to a computer logged into the terminal server and enter their data. I would have the receptionist create the record and get them started and the rest would just be a fill in the blanks and click the next button. A former network administrator set me up so when I click on the Remote Control to a terminal server user, I can connect without them having to give me permission. I want to set the receptionist up the same way, but I don't neccesarily want to give her admin rights. is that possible?

I don't know if this is help for our server or Excel I am looking for. Here is the issue...

Whenever one lady is logged into a session on our server, she opens a word document that has an Excel worksheet embedded in it. The second she tries to click on the Excel worksheet, Dr. Watson makes a call and hits me with the following message...

Error in Excel.exe
Access Violation (0xC0000005), Address: 0x304632a3

When she tries to just open the Excel program, she gets this error:

Compile Error in Hidden Module: ThisWorkBook

This only happens to her, should I make a new profile on the server for her? Is there something in Excel I can do? I am so lost and MS Knowledge base has been of no help to me.

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

2. Also, I know that Windows XP has an RDP client, I've used before on many occasions, but what about all the Windows 2000 clients that I still have out there. What should I do for them to access the new Terminal Servers?

A:Terminal Server license server(s)? RDP client for Windows2K?

I'm not 100% sure on #1, but I believe that the TS licensing becomes integrated into the AD, so if one DC goes down, the other one will be able to check licensing. On another note, if you are using the TS for administration only, I don't believe you needs the TS Licensing to be installed.

For #2, you can download the latest version of the RDP client from MS's website. It should also be available through Windows Updates, although I think Win2K isn't supported any longer, other than Critical Updates.

Hello weeplelations! I'm having trouble using the SMS 2003 Admin console with Vista. The Admin console works perfectly for about a day or two. After that, when I click on 'Collections', nothing appears. I need to use Vista because we are going to be deploying and supporting it this summer, but if I can't see the computers in Collections to connect to them, I'll have to go back to XP. Any patches or fixes out there? Is it something that needs to be done on the server side? Ayudenme por favor!

Hi, A friend has installed Windows 2003 and when the computer boots he is prompted to hold down the Control+Alt+Delete as a security feature before entering The Log On password. I would like to know if a password was not set upon installation if the prompt would still appear ? Also I would like to know if this feature can be bypassed somewhere in the settings.

THANKS

I log in to Windows 2003 server R2 through a domain (but on the local machine). I need my log on to be the admin over this local machine. Since the user details are stored on the domain, my username doesn't show up in local users and groups. How do I make a remote user an admin?

Hi,

I have a set of 5 machines - 2 desktops (one being a thin client and the other to function as a 'server' ) and 3 notebooks. I was wondering what was the difference b/w the 2 versions Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003. Is it true one cannot use a thin client but need a regular cpu setup to use Small Business Server 2003 ?

There is a difference in costs and since i have windows 2000 on the desktops and xp on the notebooks wondered if i needed to shell out so much more $$ for the Windows Server 2003 . I plan to put in a wireless networking system to link all the 5 machines.

Thanks in advance for any and all advise.

A:Solved: Difference b/w Windows Server 2003 and Small Business Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server has the following restrictions:
- Only one computer in a domain can be running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server must be the root of the Active Directory® forest.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server cannot trust any other domains.
- A Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server domain cannot have any child domains.
- Each additional server must have a Windows Small Business Server 2003 client access license (CAL). You can use CALs for each user or for each device.
The standard edition of Windows Small Business Server 2003 includes Windows Server 2003 technologies, including fax service, firewall service, and remote-access service. Additionally, it includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, enhanced tools for server monitoring and administration, and an out-of-the-box solution for internal Web sites. The standard edition is ideal for customers who do not require the higher-level functionality included in the premium edition

The premium edition includes everything in the standard edition, plus Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, and Microsoft FrontPage® 2003. The premium edition is ideal for small businesses with more demanding IT needs, such as data-intensive line-of-business applications, or advanced firewall and Web-caching capabilities

The standard edition has most of the stuffs inside.

Running Win 2003 server, DHCP and DNS, with 180 computers logging into our domain. We primarily are using Win XP Pro, but want to replace some laptops but with Win 7 platform. I have received some ambiguous answers, but will Windows 7 allow me to log into the Win 2003 domain and receive DHCP and DNs? Many thanks!

A:Win 7 access to 2003 server

Yes, assuming you are talking about a version of 7 that has domain abilities. ANy issues you may come across are most likley related to IPV6 and your network configuration rather than the OS itself. I am typing this on a Win 7 Enterprise workstation ona 2003 domain getting my DNS and DHCP address just fine.

Using Home Premium connecting to Server 2003 - non domain. Workgroup is same for network pc's. Problem: User logs in with username and password which is the same on the server. however when server resource is accessed user is prompted to log in to server. When they provide their same credentials they work fine until they log off their pc. This means the pass-through authenication is not working. Is there a way to fix this or this by design? Any ideas would be great

A:Server 2003 Access

Hi,

Another way to rectify this.
Go to control pannel/user accounts click manage user accounts, tab advanced and click manage passwords, Now add the server ip address, store the credential for authendication.

Let me know the result

Greetings,

I have seen this at multiple workplaces. It goes like this:

1) Adobe Reader and Microsoft Office are included on dedicated VDIs and terminal servers/RDS

2) Everything works fine, users are able to open documents without any problems from local server drives as well as mapped network drives and e-mail attachments

3) After some time, the problem starts:

- Users are unable to open Microsoft Office-type files from network drives or e-mail attachments and receive an error that the computer may be out of memory or out of diskspace (even though it clearly isn't!)
- Users are unable to open PDF files getting an access denied message from Adobe Reader

Solution? Completely disable Protected Mode in MSO programs and also in Adobe Reader.

MSO:

Adobe Reader:

Can someone tell me why this spontaneously breaks and just happens? What solution did you apply?

I've seen the complaints about this problem but with no clear resolution. There are some hot fixes listed that may help, updating to Windows 7 SP1 is supposed to help in some cases but nothing seems for certain.

No way for me to recreate this problem but apparently others have the same problem.

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

A:Setting up Pix 515E in front of ISA Server 2004 and Exchange Server 2003

Here, I scrapped your config. NAT bad/static bad/conduit bad/access-list bad.

no fixup protocol smtp
nameif int xxx outside security 0
nameif int xxx inside security 100
nameif int xxx dmz security 80
icmp permit any outside echo-reply
icmp permit any outside unreachable
icmp permit any inside
icmp permit any dmz
global (outside) 1 int
nat (inside) 1 172.17.0.0 255.255.0.0 32768 16483
route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 65.77.78.1 1
static (inside,dmz) 172.17.0.0 172.17.0.0 255.255.0.0
static (dmz,outside) 172.18.0.2 65.77.78.48 netmask 255.255.255.255 << Can't have same IP as interface**
access-list internet permit tcp any host 65.77.78.48 eq 80
access-list internet permit tcp any host 65.77.78.48 eq 443
access-list internet permit tcp any host 65.77.78.48 eq 25
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq echo
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq echo-reply
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq unreachable
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq source-quench
access-group internet in interface outside
access-list dmz permit ip host 172.18.0.2 any << *Read note 1
access-group dmz in interface dmz
access-list inside permit ip any any
access-group inside in interface inside

The above config will nat 172.18.0.2 to 65.77.78.48. You can't static NAT an entire IP to the same as a global (your interface). You can only do this if you NAT specific ports.

The above config will allow internet to reach 65.77.78.48 via TCP 80/443/25. I can only assume you're using ISA for EFE server, and maybe proxy. (Not an ISA fan)

The above config allows your ISA server carte-blanche access. In essence, it's a DMZ by name only. Don't fool yourself.

Don't use conduits, they're deprecated.

Don't use a firewall to permit "any" to your ISA server, actually use it to block inbound ports.

Also, your ISA server shouldn't/can't have two NIC's in the same subnet. That's a bad idea on 10 different levels. IF you're using your ISA server (blech) as EFE / reverse proxy for OWA, and outbound proxy - you might as well keep it on the same subnet as your Exchange server (inside, I'm assuming.) Again, 10 different reasons why it's a flawed security plan.

If this is simply an EFE server or reverse proxy, make sure you don't keep the ISA server part of any AD domain, stick it in the DMZ, and restrict what hosts it's allowed to see on the network that you're trying to protect.

Regards.

I'm having issues finding the location of en expired certificate that one of my LDAP servers responds with during an LDAPS bind attempt.

I'm using Linux's ldapsearch to perform specific tasks during user creation but recently discovered the certificate expired. I have renewed said certificate and placed it in the personal store on that ldapserver but after debugging the SSL connection it still responds with the previously expired certificate.

Can anyone tell me where this certificate would be stored on Windows Server 2003. I've found multiple post regarding the store in 2008 but that does not exist in 2003. I've searched the whole store using certutil trying to match the serial on this certificate but can't find it anywhere.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

The computers are in a workgroup the users don't log on but are connected to the win 2000 box with shares to a program. If I take active directory off the win 2000 box and demote will that affect the computers that are In a workgroup connected to the shares? Strange problem, involving a DOS (command) prompt: We run a legacy clipper database on our 2003 web server, with no problems. I just added a new user, setting her up as an administor (using the wizard). If I log on as that user and open a command prompt, I can see the directory and file I want on the server... "dir xxx.dbf" shows the correct file. But, I cannot open that file! The clipper database can't open it, and I can't open it using dbase and a "use" command. If I log back on the same computer as another user, it all works just fine.

Any ideas as to why I can see a file, but can't open it??!!

We just added a new domain controller and moved the shared folders from the old dc to the new dc. The old dc was on server 2000 and the new one is on server 2003. I have given proper access to all folders so the security should be fine. However employees are unable to access the Shared drive. If I go under the Sharing properties from the share and add Everyone, they get access, but this also allows them access to read all folders in this shared drive.
Not sure what extra setting I'm missing. Any help would be great.

I have a client who has an existing Server 2000 domain. He is running two Windows 2000 servers in his domain. What he's looking to do is to replace the master domain controller,(the server which was first brought up and hence contains the master copy of the domain database).

I believe that since this is going to be a completely new server and running Server 2003 standard edtiion I believe, that I'll need to first take everyone out of the domain, demote the second domain controller to a stand-alone and then demote the master domain controller which effectively dissolves the domain. Then after bringing the brand new server up, recreate the domain and then the secondary domain controller and join everyone back into domain (new SID but same domain name).

Does this sound correct-could anyone confirm whether this is correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It can ping the servers though. They ping by hostname and by ip address. Other Windows 7 Pro Laptops don't have this same problem!

Additional Info:
They are all joined to the domain; servers, laptaps, etc.

We are moving our DHCP from one Windows 2003 Server (standard) to a new machine. Both servers are domain controllers. AD is set up and working on both servers. Everything is set up. I exported the dhcp database from the old server to the new one. All messages were successful.

I unauthorized the DHCP server on the old server.

Now when I try to Authorize the new DHCP server, I get an Access Denied message. Everything I have read is indicating that the I have to be a member of the Enterprise Admins group in order to Authorize a DHCP server.

We didn't have this group initially and I'm thinking we didn't because we are only running Server 2003 Standard. I created the group, but I'm not sure if I did it right and added Administrator. It still isn't working. Can someone please help me?

Hi all,
My task is to allow my accountant access to my MYOB files. He tells me his clients usually do it through Windows Terminal Services (which I guess is the Terminal Server software). A few questions to start: How do I find out if its been installed; how do I enable it? and how do I get into the configuration of it? I'm new to this one but Ive got Logmein and XPUnlimited to work in the (distant) past ....
The other totally newbie question I have is .... Once its setup, what does the person that wants to connect to my machine do to connect?
Thanks
T.

A:XP and Terminal Server

XP does not have Terminal Services; TS is available on Windows Server versions only. Instead, XP has a part of it called Remote Desktop. Certain versions of XP can act as a Remote Desktop server.

What are MYOB files, and what type of access does he need? (Meaning, what is he doing with them?)

BTW, which version of XP do you have?

When I run the application, it comes up saying that it can't be run on Windows Terminal Server.

Is there any options that I can adjust to enable this or will it simply not run?

Probably not.... it usually helps to mention the software name though.

If it expressly says it won't run on terminal server then I highly doubt it will.

Hi

Have a new 64bit server running Win2k3 enterprise edition SP1 64bit and loaded Office Pro 2003. Our web people use ASP to get the backend system working

All seems ok until we apply the new IP and then try to login through the webpage which denies access to the dbase and secure area. Our web people say that our 64 bit win2k3 and Access 2003 are wrong together!! MS tell me win2k3 64bit & Access 2003 are good together

Can someone help explain where the incompatibility comes in since multiple web searches cannot locate anyone with this problem and so I cannot find a fix for them. They want me to now buy the std 32 bit OS (lol)

Someone please help with a fix (please explain simply as I'm neither a web, ASP, Access etc person)

We upgraded our File Server Domain Controller from Windows 2000 Server to Server 2003.
Share access used to be really quick.
Now there are a couple of seconds between access to shares.
If you are moving a few levels throughout shares, this becomes problematic.
Does anyone know of any documents that explain the exact process the OS goes through to access a share?
Could it be the new security settings that Windows 2003 employs add a few seconds of overhead to accessing that share?
