I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Several things of note. First it is absolutely essential that you update to Service Pack 3 because come July 10th XP with Service Pack 2 will no longer be supported. You need some serious updating and it may be a central reason you are experiencing issues..
Second, before you do the above there is a very strong possibility you are still infected. Go to our Virus and Malware Removal forum and read the 8 Step sticky. Follow it step by step -- don't skip any of the steps. When you finish post on that forum with the required logs attached.
Third, since you can boot into Safe Mode there is a good chance your issue is driver related, but unless the above isn't attempted you won't be able to diagnose properly.
Fourth, as a side note, you might want to consider another gig of RAM if your motherboard is designed to do so. XP and two gigs is a good combination.
Fifth, you mention both Avira and Avast. Are both of these installed? Please tell us all the security software you have installed and running in real time protection.
Scroll down for the drivers.
Whenever I connect my external hard disk to my laptop, my computer freezes as soon as I My Computer to access it or click on 'Open to view files' in the autorun menu. I cannot do once this happens. Not even task manager can be opened. The computer unfreezes and starts working fine after I unplug my hard disk. But it works just fine on my friend's laptop.
This started happening a few days ago. Till then I could use the hard disk normally without any problems. Can anyone please help me out with this problem?
My operating system is windows 7 and I am using Avast Internet Security 7 antivirus
What type of external HDD is it? Of what Brand?
I am getting random CPU spikes whilst playing games, it lags a lot and Ive noticed a drop in fps when Firefox is running. Though I have a good system which should be able to handle this.
Can someone please advise and what the think the problem is?
Can you export the specs to this page?

Try disabling no script. That may be eating up all your resources and slowing down the loading of webpages. If that doesnt work, try another browser like Chrome. I would try completely clean installing windows rather than repairing it since just repairing will not clear anything such as viruses off of the PC. Malware could be another culprit and clean installation will allow you to wipe it out.
Please help me with my prob.my laptop seems fine when im using it without internet.but when I open my browsers after a few seconds it will freeze so I have to restart my laptop again.I dont know what seems to be the problem.
Does it happen to all browsers (e.g IE, Chrome, Firefox, Palemoon)?
Hey guys, I am going on holiday in early June and am looking for a way to listen to music while I'm in the pool as I plan to spend a lot of time doing so.
The way I can see it is that I have two options:
Buy a waterproof case and waterproof headphones
buy a waterproof MP3 player all-in-one.
Obviously each option has it's flaws - otherwise I wouldn't be there.
Even if I buy a waterproof case how can I be sure that even though there is a waterproof case, where it contacts with waterproof earphones will be waterproof as 'waterproof' to some sellers just means rain-proof.
The problem with the all in ones like the Sony Waterproof Walkman is that they are very expensive for very little space, the 4GB alone being £50 and 8GB is £80.
Does anyone have experience in the matter, anything they can recommend, preferably I'd like to use my phone in a case for my 32GB MicroSD card, but whatever works I guess.
:big grin: My wife JUST purchase a waterproofed iPad Shuffle from waterfi.com
website is very descriptive and the device is AS Advertised - - she's very happy with it
When I play windows media player or any other mp3 player my pc begins to slow down a lot and mouse stutters and my internet webpage closes :/ any help please?
I've posted my IRQ
What are your system specs?
Some possible solutions: Make sure Windows is up to date. Try updating your sound driver (post your system specs and I will show you how to).
I have this Hp Probook 4540s i3(windows 8, 64bit) for about a year and it was working fine but recently, I noticed that it had a problem. At times, the touchpad would freeze and I wouldnt be able to use it for a few seconds. At first this wasnt much of a problem due to the fact that I had an external mouse but now im travelling more often so this became a problem. I was jsut wondering if anybody knew what caused this problem and if they do, if there were any quick fixes towards it.
Go to the HP driver support for your model and get the latest drivers for the touch-pad.
You might have to find out who makes that touch-pad and get it from the manufacturer
Or see if there is Windows update for it.
Did you update to Windows 8.1 yet?
Also there are known issues with Windows 8 and some touch-pads know working correctly.
My laptop has been freezing up, even when I would boot in safe mode.
It has a history of hard drive problems, so I just replaced the hard-drive.
But it still freezes up when I try to boot and run Acronis.
Is there anyway to tell what is causing this?
Is it running hot?
I have a Western Digital drive and it keeps freezing the transfer process around 15 seconds remaining. I am trying to transfer my movie files to it. The files are around 750 megs to 2.5 gigs each. I am trying to do them one at a time. I have got it to transfer about 3 movies to the device. When the transfer locks I have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to get it to stop. Its I think a 110 gig external.
Some details you have left out.
Age of PC
Desktop or Laptop
How much RAM?
Single, Dual or Quad or high CPU.
Size of HDD
What source are you using to transfer file to the HDD?
Are you using a network LAN?
Speed of the LAN 10, 100, 10000?
When you do this type of work make sure the PC doesn't go to sleep and keep an eye on it.
Make sure the HDD doesn't have any bad blocks do a check disk (CHKDSK C: /F
Make sure the HDD is de-fragmented
Make sure the HDD has done quick or full optimized (use ULTRA DEFRAG FREE)
Make sure the system is cleaned using JetClean Free
The condition of the HDD is very important also the source your transferring from too it.
Hey guys, I need some help, I wanna play LoL but I'm having a problem because the game freezes, the screen goes black and all I can hear is the sound of it.
I play on a pc with Windows Vista Business 32bit/ 2GB RAM/Intel Core2 CPU T7200 @ 2.0GHZ/ NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400.
I can't seem to get the proper drivers though, because the nvidia website says there are none available for this graphic card.. Ideas anyone??
I would either get a new graphics card or try lowering the settings as soon as you appears in a game. Change your resolution all the way down and make sure shadows and everything else is on low or very low and sound off if you like.
I have a brand new computer which is much capable on computer new regardless Game OS of freezes brand of doing what I ask for Unfortunately it kept freezing very early in games I tried BF shogun and dead island The outcome is the same At first I thought it might be because I was using a win and it had some compatibility problems Then I installed win ultimate after deleting everything on C applied Game freezes on brand new computer regardless of OS all updates for windows and video card drivers then tried dead island again You know what it crashed on character selection screen Then it also crashed in the end of my first battle on shogun What I mean by crashed is that it is totally frozen and I can t even do ctrl-alt-del It leaves the only choice to me as reset So I guess it is not because of the OS so I would definitely appreciate if you can help me with this Here is my build G SKILL Ripjaws GB x GB DDR PC DIMM RAM Cooler Master Hyper EVO Cooler mm CPU Cooler AMD BullDozer Eight Core FX- GHz AM Processor CPU LG GH NS X SATA Internal SATA Game freezes on brand new computer regardless of OS DVD Writer Sapphire HD XT G GDDR PCI-E Dual Fan Video Card Graphics Card Cooler Master K Mid Tower Gaming Chassis quot Samsung LED Monitor LED FSP Aurum W ATX PSU Active PFC Black Asus M A EVO R Motherboard Socket AM AMD xDDR xPCIe- xPCIe- Firewire RAID ATX Any help you can provide is very much appreciated Thank you nbsp
There are many things that can be the cause of this. I first thought it was the GPU, but as I read on, I think it could be either a RAM, temperature, or HDD issue. It is most likely a RAM issue.
Another issue could be overheating, but since the games crash basically instantly, it doesnt seem to be an issue. Just to make sure, can you download RealTemp and tell me temperatures on the CPU? Also, download GPU-Z, and tell me the GPU temperatures (sensor tab of GPU-Z, under "GPU Temperature").
Most likely cause: It could also be bad RAM (this is the most likely reason). Download Memtest86, put it on a flash drive, and boot into it. Run Memtest about 5-10 times and tell me the results.
I m running the latest version of Firefox along Firefox The it Rolling Stones,"Paint Does Black"..Literally! with the extensions quot Video Download Helper quot amp quot NoScript quot This is on a G IGP Intel board w GBs of system RAM After perhaps tabs are open FF will black out when scrolling black out tabs or entire window sets and finally crash My other quot art collector machine quot P- GBs of DDR same browser but only quot NoScript quot Firefox Does The Rolling Stones,"Paint it Black"..Literally! will open literally hundreds without complaint Although at some point I suppose Firefox does simply get grossed out and exits Anyway the color value of pure black is So it seems to me that Firefox Does The Rolling Stones,"Paint it Black"..Literally! a some point the color management can no longer retain the color information necessary and the registers go to zero So my guess is it s acting like it s running out of Vram Yes there s a question in here somewhere Have any of you experienced this Or do any of you think a discreet graphics card might help Or perhaps more importantly do any of you agree or disagree with my diagnosis nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/firefox-does-the-rolling-stones-paint-it-black-literally.192696/

Hey guys, I've recently ordered a new PC and it should be here in a week. I'm a gamer and I like to write music and will finally be able to record with my new system. I'm just lacking a sound card. So basically I'm looking for a card that will be awesome for gaming and music. Any suggestions out there? I know I will need a PCI-E card. I'm looking to spend $150-200. Any help would be much appreciated
This is probably the best one out there: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132010
That is the best of both worlds. There is a better card for gaming, but the Essence above is much better for creating music and phenomenal for gaming.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ18E which is experience some major problems at the moment.
Firstly, I get 'nvlddmkm' problem about every 10mins or thereabouts which causes the screen to lock, go fuzzy, blank the screen and then revive and become functional again.
This can eventually, or straight away, lead to a total fuzzy screen lock-up where I simply have to hit the off button to restart the computer.
This is also interspersed by various other screens such as those below; mixed pages, blue screen, which seem to have come from the Matrix.
The computer is about four years old and the front left of it can get very hot.
Is it just knackered?
Would a re-format and re-install do the trick?
Any ideas or solutions?
The Nvidia graphics chip on the motherboard is probably over heating. The CPU/GPU cooling port may be clogged with dust or the thermal pads or paste need to be cleaned and replaced
Hi all got above named laptop but when I turn it on it freezes every time when it get to the black screen where it says start windows normally or other options such as safe mode etc is this hard drive failure thanks in advance

I have exactly the same issue. Brand new Naga 2012, the cursor freezes for 5-10 sec at random intervals.
I have an AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU,4GB DDR2 RAM,MSI 785GT-E63 mobo,ATI 6850 graphics card.
My OS is Windows 7 64bit.
The problem that I?ve been facing is my laptop just freezes, the screen freezes, the audio distorted, not able to move cursor, keyboard does not work. Had to force power off.
Here are the specs:

Next reply I will post problem history and details
Please request information if needed more, I am willing to provide.
My questions and doubts:
How can it be solved?
Can we call this ?overheating? since it freezes when temperature is not over 60 C? but it freezes more when the weather is hotter.
Is the temperature during safe mode normal or too high?
Am I abusing my laptop?
Please request information or pictures if needed more, I am willing to provide.
It works fine with Windows 7 since 2009, when I?ve been recovering from spine surgery, I?ve been using it more than usual since December 2011 where the problem occurs first time, then it occurs more often since March 2012.
Computer usage behavior:
I usually use Autodesk Inventor and Autocad software for 3D and 2D designing, along with web browsing, playing music with iTunes, watching some concerts and South Park by windows media classic. I play occasionally play games like Left 4 Dead 2, Elder Scrolls Skyrim (once-twice a week).
The laptop is placed on a 30 degree inclined stand, due to my surgery I need to only lie down to use the computer. It is turned on about 4-10 hours a day.
It?s been working fine since bought, when I play games, the temperature of CPU and GPU goes up to 75 C for about 1-2 hours, no problem, usually I don?t play longer than 3 hours.
Since March, it freezes randomly about 1 hour after startup when I?m using designing software along with web browsing. Temperature is about 48-53 C, I have screenshots of the temperature software before it freezes. This happens at least once a day.
Since March, it freezes about 5 minutes after start running left 4 dead or skyrim.
During safe mode, the temperature stays about 70 C and sometimes freezes.
After forced shut down and power on right away sometimes it freezes during boot, or even 5 seconds after power on.
It rarely freezes when watching videos and when turning the computer on all night for downloading.
I never finish a full system virus scan, it freezes about 20 minutes after scanning while temperature is about 50 C.
Weather condition: Thailand, hot and humid.
No air conditioning in room, temperature during of months Dec-Feb: 20-30 C, Mar 30-35 C, Apr 35-40 C (hottest of summer). My laptop in this temperature works fine in the past 2 years, other older laptops are also working fine.
Suspected causes and solutions tried:
Replace thermal paste at CPUs and GPU, dust removal at CPU fan, got a cooling pad underneath laptop: temperature slightly drops (3-5 C), no significant improvement in freezing.
Tried updating drivers to the latest possible for the right OS, reformatted partition to change OS to Win XP but problem still occurs.
Hello all!! I am a computer technician and recently my father just dropped the family laptop who then tried to turn it on which was a failure. A couple hours later I took a look at it and it turned back on for me and let me sign in, however 30 min. after the boot up it just froze and had to be manually rebooted. I already ran a check disk and everything seems to be fine with the hdd I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to fix the issue? The laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-NW240F running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Try removing the hard drive and memory and re-seating them... Is the LCD damaged?
Having dredged the internet, I came across this forum amongst the many with questions relating to cd drives working but dvd not etc, but my issue is slightly different, i think.
CDs seem to play ok, and so do DVDs, but I seem to have a problem with my laptop reading a disc with DS games on it that it used to read no problem. The discs can be used in my other half's laptop, so it is clearly a problem with my laptop.
I'd appreciate if anyone could advise where I can start to solve this problem
You need to have the CD/DVD drive replaced. Internal lasers fail in strange ways. The drives are not too expensive and they are easy to replace
Everytime I turn on my laptop the mouse freezes in the middle of the screen. The loading symbol will appear next to it but I cannot actually move it. I am still able to navigate using the tab and arrow buttons but I am forced to restart it before I can use the mouse.
Anybody have any ideas on what is causing this? I have searched for updates for the driver and have enabled it then disabled it.
Brand, model, age, and configuration of laptop?
As a part time DJ i spend a lot of time playing the same laptop a Recording music from music in the same order so i was thinking what if i Recording music from a laptop could just sit down and record the tracks that i play Recording music from a laptop directly into one Recording music from a laptop big MP and then it would save me having to load and cue each track I use a program called ClubDJ Pro its a twin deck system with a predefined playlist i can usually just load a playlist and tell it to cross fade during the last quot X quot seconds of the song X being a set time between and seconds However i find some songs have an extended silence at the end that can when i first played them mess up the auto cross fade facility and as anyone will tell you silence is deadly when your doing DJ ing So is there a program i can use to either record directly from my program or use another PC or laptop to record onto i assume i would use the earphone out on one to the Line In socket on the other PC Laptop and then record onto that It would be good as it then means i can use different mixes of my own nbsp
you might use WavePad Sound Editor to remove the trailing silence
My speakers are Logitech Surround Speaker Z506 and motherboard gigabyte z68x-ud5-b3.
I havent got a soundcard but I'm wondering why i cant use 5.1? and what sort of plugins/codecs i need for it? it used to work for my old machine using realtek HD and all 5 speakers work but for some reason my newer machine doesnt work, anyone can help or lead me to find a solution?
What media player are you using and does it support Dolby 5.1?
I can't connect to MSN, AIM,nor can I open the launchers for some MMOs I play (though I can get into them if I launch the .exe file). I can connect to Steam and talk to people but I can't use the browser aspect of it. Firefox says it's a proxy issue, but I'm not too software savvy and don't really know what to do with this. It seems to be anything browser-related. I haven't installed anything new and I ran a few scans for viruses, malware, etc, and did a few other things I usually do to remedy connection issues (disabling firewall, power cycling modem/router, etc) to no avail. Does anyone know how to fix this?
What are your computers complete specs? What version of Windows are you running? What kind of Internet service do you have? Cable? DSL?
i think there is something wrong with my hardware..i have noticed that when ever i move the screen or move the laptop then it either freezes or crashes..
do you have any idea which hardware may be faulty??
Looking for the best headphones for gaming and music... Noise canceling preferred so I can use them in a work environment also. Planning on spending no more than $100. Don't need a mic I can just use a separate one.
What do you guys think?
I'm considering using a few more dollars to get the Audio-Technica ATH-A700's, hmm what do you guys think.

hey guys, well for a few days now i have been trying to solve this problem, since i installed crysis and tried to play it my graphics driver makes my monitor loose connection randomly and causes my computer to freeze, i have uninstalled crysis, used system restore, and re installed my drivers, but this only seems to happen when i have drivers installed, and works just fine without them, i have also checked the motherboard and graphics card to see if they have overheated and been damaged, but nothing, my fans are working fine, it seems to be an issue with the driver software, oh and also with the drivers installed i get colour bars on the BIOS and the WinBoot screen, i have tried all i can to find how to fix it but nothing
Can you give us your computers complete specs? Take a look at my specs to give you an idea of what we need
DMA is enabled...
The sound is synced to the voices, but the music seems to be playing slowly. Like in slow motion.
Have tried playing with several different audio players... VLC (VLC default codecs) and k-lite codecs as well...
I am having this problem recently...whenever I am watching video in youtube
or talking in skype, my entire laptop screen becomes fuzzy and then it freezes....my cursor/keyboard...nothig works. I can only get rid off it by turning the power off.
I have the feeling it might have something to do with flash-player....so removed it...but
still it happened! I have dual-boot systems (Vista+ windows 7)..I hardly used
Windows 7 as my laptop does not support it 100%...so I checked if it also happens in Windows 7....it does not.
I do not know how can I get rid off THIS PROBLEM:
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Try updating the video driver. You should be able to find it on your laptop vendor's site.
Im having trouble with my newly built computer freezing at random points during my startup and if it does boot up all the way it always freezes on the "Shutting Down" screen. Im running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) and have reinstalled it two times.
Here is what I currently have in it:
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI
G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3
WD 1TB HDD
500W Power supply
Sounds like there could be an issue with your BIOS... either needs to be flashed to a newer version to fully support the X6 processor or the settings just need to be tweaked. Make sure your memory is running in accordance to factory spec and that your voltages for both CPU and RAM is within acceptable range.
My synaptics pointing device freezes after about 10 - 15 minutes of not using my computer. I tried making the computer wait longer before hybrinating, but it still does it. Any suggestions?
Is it a wireless mouse, if so check the batteries.
If it is chorded try another mouse and see if the problems persists.
Check these settings:
Go to the Control Panel and select Mouse. From the mouse properties screen click the Hardware tab. on the next screen under the Genral tab click on Change Settings. Then select the Power Management tab and make sure it is set to "Allow this device to wake the computer" and not "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
This is correct instruction for Windows 7, if you have a different OS (which you should have stated) there may be some minor differences.
After I formatted my HDD, re-installed the same Windows 7 I had before I've been getting brief and random picture-freezes. They appear to be more often and last longer when playing a game or so forth, although they even pop up while using a browser or MSN. I have no idea what might be causing this, as the PC itself is fast as usual. If anyone can help me...I'd be eternally grateful.
Short and facty:
1) Brief picture freezes, more often when PC working hard
2) Just did a format
3) NEED THIS FIXED FAST =)
What do you mean by "random picture freezes". What kind of picture or pop ups?
I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with vista and every time i try to play a song from my external hdd i get an error message that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set associations control panel.
This is the normal instruction for setting up a file association.
1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, typing "default programs" and then clicking Default Programs in the pop up list.
2. Click on Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
This opens a list of extensions.
3. Choose the extension of the files that you wish to open then click on change program button.

Sounds like the software is incompatible with your system. Have you got the correct version for your OS. Is the PC otherwise working without error?

Hi, I Have An Emachines E525 Laptop Which Has A Problem.

Kindest Regards Coreyy
Though Win7 is much more tolerant of enabled/disabled Networking, my experience has typically been that when a PC "freezes" for a couple of minutes, it's usually because it is attempting to access a Network resource that's not there, and it takes about two minutes for the system to "time out" and give up polling the network.
Whether you've ever had your notebook on a wired or wireless network, you didn't say. But when a Windows PC chokes for two minutes, that's almost always the cause.
Check your Home Network settings, and make sure your notebook isn't trying to access any remote drives/resources.

i was watching some videos online and i tried to mute sounds from all the other stuff i was using at the tim and now i go back to my spotify and its says it cant play music because there is a problem with the sound card what do i do?
Can you take a screen shot of the actual error message and post it? You might just have to re-install the sound card driver, but who knows you haven't given enough info yet to give you a good answer.
My computer is freezing up on me whenever i play StarCraft2 (and any other game for that matter). Once it freezes I turn it off and then back on. It then gets stuck at the windows XP loading screen.
If i let my computer sit for a few hours I will then be able to get back into xp(not all the time). Everything seems to work fine until i start playing a game(usually. sometimes it freezes even when im not playing anything but, for the most part, only when i'm in a game). I'm using a NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT. ASUS M2N-E motherboard.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

My Dell Latitude D630 freezes and has green vertical lines and also a wide line about 3-4 inches wide when i reboot. The laptop wont even load anymore. Safe Mode doesn't load, either?
Hello guys...having a freeze issue and it has started just a few days back.
My system freezes with the hard disk light glowing solid bright(no strobe effect at all). The only way to find a solution is to restart the system. CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work.
This usually happens while installing applications...and happened while installing Microsoft Flight Simulator X. I was able to move the mouse arrow around though. I am using nVidia's 195.62 WHQL certified drivers.
Antivirus is Norton Internet security 2010.
My laptop config:
HP PAVILION dv5t
Intel Core 2 Duo P7350(2.00GHz,3MB L2,1066MHz FSB)
3GB DDR2-800 RAM
[email protected] HDD...Fujitsu
nVidia Geforce 9600M GT 512MB DDR2(NO OC)
Vista Home Premium 32(SP1)
Load the system into safe mode without networking and leave it on for 1 hour then come back. Do you have the same issue? If not then it might be NIS10 causing the issue or registry errors. Download and install IOBIT Advance System Care (free) you can install that then run it under Safe Mode. See what it finds on your system that needs attention to fix.

Does this happen with particular games or just any game (or 3D app)?
When you say that the PC freezes, can you still see the image on the screen (ie, not a blue screen)?
Does the sound stutter?
How long have you tried leaving it to recover? Maybe the PC is doing something in the background?
Hi About a week ago my system froze while playing a game it had never done this before during the years I ve had it and when I freezes Random tried to reboot there was dots going in symmetrical lines all over the motherboard and windows bootscreen not in bios and not on post It managed to boot in safemode I checked temperatures Random freezes and everything seemed normal After a couple restarts the dots disappeared and I could boot normally This problem have since come back a couple times a day Sometimes I can play for hours before it crash sometimes it crash almost immediately It seems to almost only crash in games but that can be because when the computer is on I ll probably be playing a game When this problem occurs it can always boot into safe mode can t boot normally and it always works to boot normally if I uninstall my graphics drivers first When it fails to boot it comes to the windows loading screen and then it dissapears and seems to freeze leaving only these dots going in symmetrical lines on the screen I ve tried cleaning away dust increasing fan speeds to try and ensure that it s not a temperature issue and I don t think it is I ve ran prime for hours on occasions without graphics drivers without crash or error I ve ran a hd test without errors I ve disconnected everything that doesn t need to be connected like cd player extra hdd etc My parts are Gainward GTX Gigabyte GA-X -DQ Intel Core Duo E xOCZ DDR PC gb Corsair W Windows Vista -bit The dots on screen and the fact it works without drivers safemode and seems to be stable in prime leads me to believe the graphics card is broken But I would like to hear what you guys think before I order a new one and if you have any ideas on what else it could be Thanks in advance nbsp
After two years of operations, there is a good chance that your video graphics card has failed, or if the computer is older than two years, that your hard drive is starting to go...
Tell us more about age and configuration... memory, what programs are installed, etc.
Hey guys, got a problem for yall! Let me begin with my setup:
9800 GX2 GPU
ASUS Striker II extreme 790i
DDR3 OCZ 1gb 1333 platinum series (2 sticks)
900w akasa psu
Now here's the probelm: The pc locks up anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes. I've switched graphic cards, tried the ram individually and today replaced the motherboard - which made no difference whatsoever (probably should have tried tech-spot beforehand). I have also installed and reinstalled several different versions of windows on the system; the crashes take place as I'm installing and if i get it passed the installation it crashes soon after.
It just freezes completely, keyboard and mouse unresponsive, no blue screen or anything, just a freeze (mouse doesnt move etc).
Any help is much appreciated! Thnx
Are all settings on your system at stock?
Have you tried running on a different PSU?

If you have another computer available and are able to burn a CD .iso download this http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v416_b00.iso
Burn to CD, boot to disc and run test. This is Drive Fitness Test and will tell you if you have a bad hard drive or not. It is free and easy to use. Be sure to run advanced test instead of quick test.

I'm thinking that without gaming ambitions, the new Intel core i3 CPUs might meet your needs with their integrated graphics. These give pretty decent scores in
the Windows Experience Index, something like 4.9 for Areo, and 5.3 for business and gaming graphics. To the best of my knowledge, the matching H55/ H57 Intel chipset motherboards provide Fire Wire input.
You should first subscribe to Newegg's Email list, so you can grab your parts as they become available on sale.
Here is Intel's list of socket LGA1156 CPUs available at Newegg; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...=2010340343 50001157 1051749233&name=LGA 1156
And the matching integrated graphics H55/ H57 boards in the Gigabyte brand; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...01314 1070549182 107173338&name=Intel H55/H57 Be sure to pick one with 4 memory sockets. (4 out or 5 do). I have this one; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128421
Please pay no attention to the bad reviews for this product, they were all written by imbeciles claiming, "high technical ability". I don't know squat about computers, and I had one of these systems up and running perfectly, with Windows 7 installed, in about 3 hours.
In fact, I'm hoping Newegg will offer "don't know squat" as a technical ability claim option. That way, I'll be able to check, "don't know squat", and report, "it works perfectly for me, 5 stars"!
Here is a test report done on a few of these boards at Techspot; http://www.techspot.com/review/259-intel-h55-motherboard-shootout/

Failed hard drive...
Related to the problem that I posted about here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic141683.html, this is a little more urgent. The Compaq will frequently, sometimes regularly lock up: screen freezes, neither mousepad nor keyboard respond, and the harddisk parks the heads. Lately, it locks up when it's on the charger, and then is fine (at least, so it seems) when on battery-power. It's also sensitive to being touched--not bumped, it's that unpredictable. Sometimes, I can move it around without problem, other times, if I even touch it, it freezes.
The fans still run like normal, so I don't think that it's overheating. I'm afraid it's a motherboard issue, which I wouldn't be surprised at, considering that it's about 6 years old.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Hi, this is my first time. I have a gm5045e gateway dual core. i got it from a guy who said the mobo was fried. well, i hooked it up and it didnt post. then, i proceeded to take all ram out. after turning on, it beeped and i shut it down. after replacing the ram, the computer POSTed. after a few shutdowns, it wouldnt POST anymore. after trying multiple other things, such as taking the CMOS batt. out, it finally POSTed again. I then preceeded to format a harddrive and try to load Windows. The computer froze and wont POST anymore. Ive researched this to the best of my ability and am fed up. help PLEASE...
Remove the motherboard from the case and make sure it was not shorting to the case standoffs
So i seem to be having small 10-15 sec freezez during gameplay. (seems to happen on all games) Im running vista 64, asus p5n32 mother, nvidia 9800gt, and 6gig of ram. also including the fan on the graphics card im running 6 fans. Sor far i have defragged, checked all ram cards, cleaned regestry, and replaces graphics card. I do very little internat on this comp, mostly gaming and occasional e-mail. Hoping someone can give me some insight
Uninstall your graphic drivers and completely remove them from system using driver cleaner, then download and install the latest drivers from nvidia. Also check your GPU / CPU temps; with that many fans it shouldn't be a problem though.
Let me explain what I did and maybe you can help...
I got a bad sector error for my sata slave drive on a re-boot.
On my next boot-up windows xp froze right before the Welcome screen and it's been that way since.
I ran HDD Regenerator diagnostic and it corrected 422 bad sectors, windows still locks up.
I unplugged the drive and tried another sata drive and it worked fine, so it's not the plugs.
It is a bad drive.
Best luck is to buy a new drive, then put the exisiting defective drive in the other bay or in an external USB enclosure to drag and drop all your data. Once you have assured that everything has been saved, reformat and reinstall the SATa drive.

I have a strange experience with sounds lately I have no come background games of music sound How some different? idea why this happening or what is causing it but here it is How come some background music of games sound different? One day I was doing some light gaming on both my tower and laptop since both my computers meets the minimum requirements and while playing this game I heard some unusual sounds on both How come some background music of games sound different? my laptop and tower my laptop while playing the background music of the game seemed to be missing a couple or not few sound types in the game On my tower it sounded like it had an extra beat as if I could here that extra sound s with the background music playing I can t explain real good but to simplify this my laptop seemed to be lacking of some melody beats while my tower has it all and slightly deeper bass I turned my laptop speakers high yet no extra melody beat appeared I How come some background music of games sound different? did the same with the tower sounded the same as before but just louder I am sure I installed this game on both my computer successfully with no errors I reinstalled it again and same problem occurred I don t understand is the speakers more sensitive on the tower and giving it more variety of sounds or is the laptop speakers not so sensitive in outputting more variety of sounds Or both are wrong and it is just the matter of XP and VISTA or is it the software or drivers installed for the sounds Is something wrong with the speakers Do I need buy better ones Ones that s suppose to act normal nbsp
try updating your sound drivers first, then you might want to look into past problems others might have had with this games sound. Since this happened to both your computers at the same time it sounds like the problem is the game.
A simple test to see if your speakers are broke is just...play music on them. Does it sound fine? yes? then it's not your speakers
unfortunatly without knowing what game it is that you are talking about I can't really look into any problems others have had with it.
Hi I have this problem since past few weeks and i cant find a solution for it and was hoping if anyone could help me out.

One make sure the system CPU heat-sink fin are not clogged with dust same goes for the PSU and the rest of the system board. If there is dust remove it with a can of dust remover.
Try using AGP video card at 8x with 256MB and Video Sound Card instead of onboard. You might one to do this the easiest way is to buy the AGP card first then try it and see if the hicups go away. Remember to disable onboard video too.

Ok I think i might of found the problem...please help me verify if this is indeed what is causing my problem because I am pretty sure it is.
I downloaded SpeedFan.
I opened it up.
Read the voltages at the bottom...
My +12V was sitting an a constant 0.44V...
So does that mean its like dead or something?
Everything else was lower than it was supossed to be as well.
My +5V was at 3.5V which is low i think.. and ya... so i think this might be it.
I also went into the Monitor tab on Speed Fan or whatever, and monitored the +12V rail. It showed a realtime graph. And it was a flat line on 0.44V not doin a single thing..
Post your help on this please.
I've read somewhere that the problem could be the synaptics (?) drivers, but how can I do anything about them when I cannot move the mouse?
I tried a separate mouse in the USB key, but that didn't even appear to register.
Help?!? I'm a computer user of limited ability, and thoroughly frustrated!
Ok, what seems to me to be the problem is the system is having an issue with recognizing USB devices. This might be a problem either with your physical USB ports, or with Windows. Your USB ports might have been damaged, or Windows is having an issue recognizing USB devices once it loads up. Windows is weird in that it loads up all the device drivers and recognizes USB stuff as it starts up and sometimes a USB device that's plugged in before it books will make it go screwy. I've had a similar issue once before.
First of all, what I'd like you to do is unplug the mouse and any other unimportant USB device you have. USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB flash drive, USB external drive....whatever. If it doesn't need to be on there, take it out.
Start up the computer. Once it loads up Windows, try plugging the keyboard and mouse back in. What should happen is Windows, having already loaded the USB drivers and such, will see you plugging in the USB devices again and it will try to detect what they are and get the necessary drivers to make them work.
After you've tried this, let me know what's happening. If it isn't fixed, then there's something even worse that's wrong with Windows or your USB ports.
i am with family for an early christmas vacation and found a pc that's regularly crashing 3-5 times after a cold start, and i am told it works well after that. i have "only" experienced one crash yet, yesterday, and the machine is stable now and was again after a restart yesterday. os is win xp, it is protected by kaspersky and cleaned with crapcleaner. as far as i am told the pc itself has been vacuum cleaned and brushed some time ago because of this issue, and should be practically dust-free. any ideas on where to start looking for issues? i suspect it is a hardware-thing, just because of the stability i am told it displays when running for a while.
amd athlon xp 2400+, 1gb ram, radeon 9250, wd hdd
Some power supplies are affected by cold temperatures, as is thermal paste and the resulting detection. We see poorly made cables that create the same failures as there is apparently enough change to reduce full electrical contact.
Don't know of an easy fix, except to start replacing components and changing the thermal paste.
I ve tried this in three different I whenever a System freezes burn dvd programs and every time I m about percent into a dvd burn the program locks up explorer locks up and most programs can t launch Reading System freezes whenever I burn a dvd dvds doesn t seem to be a problem but burning causes some major problem The only thing that works is some programs that were opened prior to the lockup This is a clean install on an old system that has never had a problem like this before Additionally batch files don t work for whatever reason If I manually open the command prompt I can run quot chkdsk quot for example but if System freezes whenever I burn a dvd I try to run it from a batch file it doesn t execute most of the commands It just skips over everything but the most basic commands like quot echo quot I include this because I think it might be related Anyway anyone know what is going on here I m probably going to reinstall but it would be nice to know what the cause of this problem was Windows XP SP IDE plexor burner nbsp
The Plextor burner may be the cause of the lockups
Sorry for your time if this is a meaningless thread(this is my first thread)
when I play any 3D game game gets "frozen" after some time displaying the message
The instruction at "0x69639e81" referenced momory at "0x1a96bca4". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the Program
Why is this happening? What should I do? If this a hardware related problem what piece of hardware(RAM, GPU...etc) should I replace
Thank you very much for your valuable time and help (I cant give you anything in return except gratitude :blush
it would be helpful to list which OS you are using (i.e. Windows XP, Vista, 7 etc...) and which graphics card plus how much RAM you have installed in the system. make sure that you have the latest updates installed and that your drivers are up to date as well.
basically my laptop freezes shortly after starting up (even before I can get to safe mode),in the shop they said it could be overheating, I changed hardrive and it didnt make any difference (that was before I was told it could be overheating), After couple of days I managed to started up to the point where it displayed line that operating system not found (new hardrive installed), I was pressing F2 and DEL to get to Bios so I could begin install OS but then after few minutes there was a beeping sound coming out probably from fan? When I tried to reboot it again, it got frozen in the beginning again. its 2years old fujitsu siemens Amilo2515 laptop. It used to freeze in past but worked properly after i reinstall system until now.. Any idea whats wrong? thanks in advance
You need to press F6 (when prompted) during the Windows install, and then install your hard drive controller drivers

What is the make and model of your motherboard? What operating system are you running?
I am not sure this is the right forum or not I am not good at explaining stuff so I will do my best here I have had my laptop for almost one year It is a Toshiba with Vista The Hard Drive had to be replace just a little over a month after I got it I have had some minor freezing problems before A system repair startup repair or whatever Laptop freezes it is called seem to have no trouble Laptop freezes taking care of The other day my laptop started acting crazy and then just didn t want to startup right The Tobisha screen came on but after that the screen went black I decided to use the recovery disk and just return it back to factory form I had some problems but eventually I thought I got it straighten out During the final installations I get the msg saying do not interrupt After noticing the nothing was happening I check it out A msg popped up saying it couldn t find upgrade or patch After I clicked ok just to get things to advance everything else seem to have no trouble installing After all that finish everything seem normal Then for no reason the computer just froze on me No matter what I did it just froze I try to allow it enough time to get out of it but it just remain frozen I can go into safe mode and it seem to do just fine Although it did freeze up with me one time I am not sure if that is anything or not I was trying to see if I could install a virus protection Any idea on what this could be I hope I explain it I try doing a system repair scan and finishes in sec I never seen do that before I did another option on the recovery disk it showed nothing There was an error that did pop soon after the recovery part finish but I can t remember what it was called nbsp
It is a Toshiba with Vista.Click to expand...
There may be a patch update or something like a pre-install driver you need to do(?)
But Toshiba make a lot of different laptops, have a look HERE, and check out any updates that need to be done
Any further help please reply with your Make and Model number
Hello I ve been having an issue with a computer for some time now It s a custom built PC not something I ve bought from Dell or so Computer freezes games during forth Basically I ll be playing a Computer freezes during games game and the computer will just stop without warning - frozen completely The only thing the computer does is emit a loud screeching sound from the speakers - lowering the speakers turns it off I ve already run memtest to see if it could possibly be my memory Came back fine I have been speculating that it could have something to do with my processor or just the processor system temperature in general A while back I had installed a program called SpeedFan which I was using to test my computer s temperature It had given me ridiculous results - basically it said my computer and processor were past the boiling point Really really high temperatures Once I had SpeedFan installed my rear fan stopped working - it would no longer spin unless I restarted So I figured SpeedFan was busted and was screwing with my fans so I uninstalled it However the problems with my PC freezing occurred far before I had SpeedFan installed at all But I am beginning to wonder if there was some merit to SpeedFan as I am reading that the computer overheating could have something to do with the PC freezing during games But my concern is that I have fans plus a heatsink for the processor I have one fan in the back that s blowing air out one in the front blowing air in and another on the side situated below the CPU blowing air in not on the CPU directly as it wouldn t fit due to the heatsink I touch the computer and open the case and check inside and it does not feel hot at all - quite the contrary even When SpeedFan was saying my PC was at the boiling point the computer was not hot at all So I don t know anymore One thing I do notice with my fans is that the side-mounted fan collects an unusual amount of dust I have to use dust-off every few days to get rid of the dust collection on the outside of the fan It s usually quite a lot I do not think it s normal to collect that much dust in such a short period of time I ve been wondering if perhaps I ve set up my fans wrong and I need to re-arrange the way they take in and blow out air The only other thing I can mention is that the PC does not freeze all the time during games It s not a constant problem but it happens It usually happens more so during games that take up a lot of processing power - for instance it -might- happen in World of Warcraft when I alt-tab to check something on Firefox at the same time and it usually happens while I m playing a game called Hearts of Iron II which is a grand strategy game on a massive scale with tons of calculations going on at once I have never had a problem during say Call of Duty or Left Dead These are my system specs Windows Vista -bit Home Premium GB RAM Patriot Viper DDR - PC model PVS G LLK Intel Core Quad processor Q Ghz EVGA NVIDIA nForce i Ultra SLI motherboard NVIDIA GeForce GTX Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal ty Pro soundcard Logitech Z- surround sound speakers Thank you all for any help in advance Also note that nothing on my PC is overclocked - I haven t the slightest idea how to overclock and I don t want to destroy anything Plus all drivers are regularly updated - this problem has been on-going for a long time now and I make sure to keep my drivers updated nbsp
If you can't remove the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro soundcard and use on board sound, try installing another sound card. I had to remove mine for the "freezing in games" issue" and revert to my Abit IP35 Pro on-board HD audio. Game play and sound are perfect now
I am running XP/Win7 on my AMD 64 Athlon 3400+ powered Pavillion. I have an integrated Realtek AC'97 audio card and lately I've noticed that all music playback is choppy - whether it's iTunes, Windows Media Player, or Youtube. I've tried different speakers, headphones, etc., but reagrdless of the hardware I use, I still get the same problem. It sounds as if the music is being paused and then played very quickly throughout the song. I don't really notice it in Windows sound effects, but that may be because they are short in length. I notice this happening on both XP and Windows 7 and don't know why.
Try updating your audio and chipset driver. There could also be a program running in the background taking up to much memory or CPU cycles. If you listen to music alot you should get a dedicated sound card. You can get a really good Audigy on Ebay for under $15. Onboard audio is notoriously troublesome. Too many other things in the system can interfere with it.
Hi I have a Toshiba Satellite running Vista and whenever I press my FN key it scrambles the screen and freezes my laptop. It is not a major issue but it is rather annoying when I want to use some of the other shortcuts. Does anyone know why this happens or how to fix it? If not I will just stop trying to use it. Thanks.
Does this happen only while in Windows? If so, the reason for the crash could be due to the Toshiba software that manages the FN key functionalities.
Two things you can try:
1) Upgrading your current Toshiba software (usually through a built-in updater tool)
2) Removing the program that controls the FN keys within Windows, most likely it's set to open at startup.
Here's a thread that briefly describes how to remove a startup item by using msconfig:
You can also download and use this tool to do so (easier):

What is your computer, a laptop or desktop? Make and model number? Operating System, Vista or XP?
Hi all I have a toshiba m -s laptop with a freezing problem It has ghz pentium celeron m processor gb ram usb ports two of which do not function for some reason i think they could be part of the problem had been running win xp corporate edition sp I suppose that is enough description anyways I have never changed any internal hardware only semi-dissasembled the thing to clean in Mode Laptop unless Safe Freezes - Toshiba the dust out I may or may not have messed something up while doing that a few weeks ago though today I read a how-to on dissasembling it and did it the right way and I feel like everything went back together fine For a long time the thing would sometimes boot up with the screen not at full resolution and just sit at the first screen that shows when its turned on Toshiba Laptop - Freezes unless in Safe Mode until I restarted it Also for a while if I closed the lid the screen would shut off when I opened it the screen wouldn t come back on had to restart As if that wasn t enough to go wrong weeks ago I came home to the computer sitting there frozen so I reach to hold down the power button for the seconds necessary to do the restart and it immediately shuts off I format try and reinstall different versions of windows it keeps freezing during installation etc So I do some reading online think its a bad hard drive so I bought a new one that wasn t the problem I then ran memtest on it and got no errors Today I tried it with and without the battery connected no difference it freezes either way Curiously it worked for like minutes earlier it usually freezes within a minute or two and then I pick it up to sit it in my lap and it instantly freezes But it never freezes in safe mode I know that was an essay anyone have some ideas Thanks in advance nbsp
USB port and freezing problem could be caused by corrupt XP software. Try repairing the XP installation
I have a Vostro 1400 which runs with Vista Business.
It has stopped working properly all of a sudden. It starts up ok, I enter my password ok and it goes onto my desktop ok. But when I click on anything, whether it be an icon or the Start menu, it just freezes.
It's working fine in Safe mode. I've tried System Restore and CCleaner.
I have a feeling it might be when I tried to plug in a camera into the USB when it was shutting down (I didn't know it was shutting down). It might not be that, but that's when it started.
The hard drive may have bad sectors. It is going to be hard to check it using Checkdisk, because you can't get to where the check is. Are there any drive utilities available in the bios or right before boot up?
When I play my game Operation Flashpoint RES I get an error sometimes don't know why... it says
Fault address: 7C90E4F4 01:0000D4F4 C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntdll.dll
RPT file error in the main folder of the game. Also have my textures change to weird weird stuff... and then my whole screen just flickers and I cannot do anything but turn my computer off and restart... no errors come up after restart either. I install two old games today desert storm 2 and vietcong just 5mins during game play or something they both just crashed.... I have xpertvision 6.1 and I put my core clock memory clock and shader clock to full and not linked also. temp is about 55 in game 49 out. I installed the lastest driver for my GPU but my computer just kept crashing for some weird reason... so I am still on 220.127.116.1185.

Everytime I start my dell desktop it freezes for about 20minutes then it runs for a few minutes then freezes again it's really hard to do anything on it I don't know what the problem is before this happened a few days ago my friend went to start up and went to run and put msconfig then he changed around the startup and made some things not start up with the PC such as aim AOLLaunch, AOL, AOLDial, AppleSyncNotifier, LogiTray, XCleaner_free, Logitech Desktop M... and Logitech Harmony...
I have no clue what the problem is can anyone please help? (there are logins and one of the logins it takes a few more seconds to freeze) By going to all programs and looking at the programs it will just freeze and take about 20mins before it resumes for a few more seconds then freeze.
Model. Hard drive? OS?
It is a slow and frustrating process to track down and fix this problem.
I would start by replacing the memory, or in lieu of that, removing one module and running it on the other memory module to test. Then switch.
Then scanning with Avast or Avira antivirus, then SuperAntiSpyware, then MalwareBytes... to see if there is an infestation.
It may be worth it to save your data and reformat the hard drive, getting a restore disk from Dell if necessary.
If it is older, clean out dust, dirt, hair, and fiber from the CPU and every port.
We need to know the model, OS, memory, and hard drive for additional suggestions.

Well not freeze exactly. It's a HP DC 5000, desktop. 2.8 Intel processor. XP Pro SP2.
The problem is when it's running the cpu usage is quite high ( 15% - 35% ) average. but it seems to get stuck. The same time after time, the same sound from the HD each time. Accessing Task Manager brings it out of it for a little while, but it sticks again. Could this be because there are bad sectors on the HD.
any help most appreciated.
Yes this could be caused by bad hard drive sectors. Have you tried running a disk check under drive properties
I yesterday finally broke down and installed FF 3.51. Prior to this I had been using FF 2.0020.
I have configured the browser to open and run in privacy mode. Now the questions;
Is this "privacy mode" the equivalent of using a program such as "Anonymizer"?
I'm experiencing longer download times, and a situation where, with respect to Jpeg photo files, the image displays in the browser window, but the download is only the gif "placeholder". As a consequence, the image page must be reloaded and then re-downloaded.
Is this the result of privacy mode?
I have recently installed Firefox 3.51 (from V3) as well, and you're right, it is slow...
As I see it, it has nothing to do with the privacy mode, because I toggled between the 2 and there was no difference.
"Anonymizer" is something I am not familiar with, but it basically does not leave any tracks, your history is constantly erased. You'll notice that when 'privacy mode' is enabled, everything in regards to your browsing history is dimmed. I actually prefer the privacy mode off, keep my history for 2 days, and keep cookies until I close...
Hey! My comp can play music but when I play DVDs or run .avis I only get background music and the vocal audio is so low it's almost muted. I can't figure it out. I have DivX installed and AC3Filter as well but I use WMP and Cyberlink PowerDVD, no vocals from either. Do I need codecs? How do I find out which I need?
I've been able to boost sound with the AC3Filter and get DVD vocals now through WMP but I still am not getting any vocals from my DVDs when played through my Cyberlink PowerDVD. Any suggestions? I'm sure I'm missing a codec or something but I can't figure out what. The website I used to go to to download audio codecs for WMP11 looks down for the count so I'm at a loss.
Bought my wife a Sylvinia SMPK4068, 4gig MP3 player. My son has a zune and an account. He was able to download to an OPEL RCA MP3 player with no problems from the zune site. However when we try to down load to the Sylvinia it states it's a bad file type or can't download subscription. This is a plug and play device with an disc included for conversion of AVI files. Any suggestions? Like all the options of this unit for the price just the problems with downloads from the zune site.
I thought that site was strictly for zune users, as I own one myself, i know you cant go hooking an ipod up to it either.
i have an older acer travel mate 340 t i installed windows on it and now it just freezes on that screen any ideas what it could be
You have a hardware problem. Reseat the hard drive and memory to see if this helps the problem first
