Storm surge on my HP mn1160 media center tower

Q: Storm surge on my HP mn1160 media center tower

It appears that during a storm, my tower was damaged, affected, whatever. The tower will not turn on. However, the green light on the back below the electrical plug flashes when plugged up. I have tried making sure that the on off swich is making contact, and I plan to unplug all the electrical plugs that could have been affected and then seeing if it works, and plugging them back in one by one to see if one of them were damaged. I have been told that there is a fuse that could have been blown but I cannot find a mention of one nor placement of one on the mother board. Is there a fuse?

I have also made sure that the surge protector has been reset, the outlet is fine, etc.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A good friend had this very same experience and we had to replace the PSU and all was just fine. Having suffered once, the user quickly added a UPS to the setup.

I left for the weekend with the computer on, but screen saver running..blah blah....I come back to the power off in my room. It seemed that there was a surge or the breaker popped. But, now that the power is back on everything in my room is fine, except the computer tower. The monitor, speakers and everything else is fine, but the tower won't turn on. I even used the same power cord for a different tower in my room and that turns on, but my computer won't. Anyone have any suggestions, I'm kind of stumped and tapped out on ideas?

A:Possible power surge, now tower won't come on

Top suspect would be the power supply, it's the first thing in the line of any surges.

I have Vista Home Premium and a Sony LCD large screen connected via HDMI to my HP Pavillion Laptop. Following varoius posted suggestions about getting no sound over the HDMI link (I got video - just not sound) when playing DVDs through Windows Media Player, I installed the Storm Codec package including its own Media Player.

Adding the Storm Codecs hasn't made any difference to the underlying issue, but as various posts recommended the Storm Media Player I thought I'd try that. It shows as two windows, a control window and separate window for the video output. I get sound - which is great. However, although the video image does show up in the video frame on the laptop screen, on the external LCD (via HDMI) it does not. I get everything else on my laptop screen, but just a black window with title and borders for the video frame.

Any suggestions?

Compared with some I've read, my issue may seem trivial, but, whenever I use Windows Media Center to play music, and click to activate the Visualizations, a gray box attaches itself to the bottom of the screen, with the album title inside.

There is no visualization playing. I can see the albums when looking at the library, and everything else seems to work ok, but this is annoying.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Windows 10 Recovery media won't work on 3020MT Tower

I'd say skip the Dell media and use the installer from Microsoft ...

No drivers, but those few that are likely to be installed are easy enough to install.
No Dell-specific tweaks - other than Dell branding (which I doubt there is anyone that would 'want' that specifically), I'm not sure what you are referring to.
Office trial is just the free version apps with the Click-to-Run app installed - when you "activate" Office through the Click-to-Run with an existing key, the files for the version you activate are downloaded from the web anyway, so there is really no reason to let that deter you.

Are you sure that ffdshow contains a decoder for Vorbis .ogg files. WMP by default only contains codecs for windows media files.

I would try K-lite codecs or Vobis codecs from here:

You might also try vlc media player from here: It has bult-in codecs for just about everything unlike WMP.

You can add Video folders on the micro SDXC to your Video's Library in Windows 8.

Then when you set up Media Center browse to the Library where the video files reside and you will then be able to play all of the video files which reside in your Video's Library from Media Center.

Shawn's tutorial on adding folders or drives to the Library's should be helpful.

I am a mature adult, have been messing with computers for about 10 years and I find Windows Media Player to be a complex pile of dookie. So it's no surprise that the preschooler is perplexed.

The freeware alternative I use Media Player Classic, which is much simpler and does a fine job of doing both video and audio.

Download here

Also, download & install the Klite Video Codec Pack, which will allow you to run DivX, Xvid and any other video format you might want.

Hey all,

I'm new to vista and i'm just wondering...just media center require media player to work? If not is it possible to remove wmp11? On that note, is it also possible to remove IE7? As I am a devoted Firefox user

A:Does Media Center need Media Player to work?

You do not need media player to use media centre as they are two slightly different applications, you do not have to use either and can in fact download any other player or only use media centre. You can remove wmp11 but once again you can just disable it.

You do not have to remove IE7, set Firefox as your default browser and forget about it.

Did you upgrade directly from a dual or single core?

Here's what it sounds like to me... I have experienced the same issue upgrading my dual core 5000+ to a Phenom 9650 recently. The main thing that is happening is that since you have upgraded from a dual core to a quad core, you've effectively added another processor to the system. Windows Media Center and Media Player both use certain codecs to de-code the video stream. By DEFAULT the codecs are designed to run basically very efficiently with 50% of the activity on each core, assuming you had a dual-core CPU. Now, swapping this to a Quad-Core confuses the application because it is still trying to allocate 50% of the activity to each core of the processor, but it cannot do so as there are now FOUR cores instead of TWO. So generally, I recommend you reinstall all of your codecs ( This solved the problem for me ) and download the latest Windows Updates. Now, since you also have more power going to your new Quad-Core, you may also want to do a capacitor reset. ( Unplug power-cable and press/hold power button down for 1 minute and 30 seconds ) and then reboot the system and let it power back up as normal. If this doesn't resolve your issue, unfortunatley the only thing left to do is to backup your data and do a Full Format/Reinstallation of Windows

-Good luck..

hi, I am going to upgrade my graphic card to ATI 5770 so I need a new power supply which has power about 550--600 watt. But the most frustrating problem is that I failed to find a proper power supply with the correct dimension.
I have an HP pavilion e9300 which uses a very wired power supply tower-150mm(W) 86(H) 140(D). But so far all the PSUs I found is the standard size --150mm(W) 86(H) 150(D) which cannot fit in my setup.

So could any PC God give me some suggestion, please??
Is any PSU with the size of my tower or can I just simply install a bigger PSU which can still successfully power up the comptuer?

Thx in adance.

A:Power supply bigger than the tower - frustrated by HP PSU tower

If the power supply will physically fit your case, it should work fine with your computer. Will the extra 10mm interfere internally with anything inside the PC?

I really like my Media Center program that I use in my entertainment center in the family room. I want to enable another computer in my network running XP to be able to record shows. I could always buy a MCE upgrade, but I don't know if it is worth the price. I have been researching other multi-media managers and came across Media Portal. It seems to have similar capabilities. It is also an open source software and it is free. Does anyone have opinions on this program. I have downloaded the program just to test-drive it a bit. I would still need to install a tv tuner card to accomplish what I want regardless of the software I choose. One interesting point with Media Portal is that they are close to releasing an update that would allow you to handle two tv signals with a single tuner. Very interesting I think.

Ok, I've been watching a lot of DVDs in my computer lately, and I when it pops up and says what program I want to use to run the disc, I always uncheck "always use this" and then select the program. Well, I accidentally hit enter right when the message popped up, so now it always runs my movies with the Windows Media Center. How do I cancel that, or at least change it? I run my movies in Windows Media Player instead of Center. How do I fix this?

A:XP Pro Over Media Center Ed.

If the Windows XP Pro is an upgrade there should be very little problem but the Vista business is it an upgrade or full installation disk? Vista has a whole new set of rules and they are a little bit confusing. I would suggest and this is a real strong suggestion. Backup all of your important data to another media like CD-R's, DVD or thumb drive(s) before doing any of this. This is to make sure you still have all of the data when you are finished either being successful or trashing the system.

In a normal 30 minute TV show, it will come up with a bar that says approx. 30 minutes, but only half of the bar is shown as recorded. Some shows do have the entire show recorded, but it is difficult to access.

When fast-forwarding or rewinding, it will skip around erratically. Sometimes when I pause, it will skip after I press play. One time, the show stopped playing, so I pressed play and then the episode was nearly over.

This is only a recent occurrence, and no big system changes were made, so I'm a little in the dark here...\

I have Windows Vista media center on my desktop that receives tv from satelite no problem at all.

My laptop Windows Vista also has media center.

The laptop is connected to my network.

How do I use the Laptop media center to connect to the Desktop Media Center so I can watch TV from it??

A:Media center to media center?

to BC, aussieoak.Okay, I understand what you're trying to do.You have access to your satellite's signal on your desktop and you can watch TV on it. I assume you have a TV tuner card of some kind installed. You have a laptop that is connected to the same network, and you want to be able to use the same satellite signal and watch TV, as well.Well, there are only two ways that can happen, that I know of.The first being that you install a TV tuner card on your laptop and hook up the satellite cable to it. This would obviously tether you to the length of the cable, but it does work.Your second option would be to do a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) from the laptop into the desktop, giving you control over the desktop whilst sitting at the laptop. Remote Desktop Connection : frequently asked questionsYou would be able to see what's on the desktop's screen (i.e. the TV show(s) playing in Windows Media Center, or whatever program you want to run). This, however, is a most inelegant option due to the fact that RDC has poor performance as far as graphics and such go.This may or may not work for you. I got an error message trying to watch a Netflix movie over an RDC. It shut Windows Media Center down. I don't know if it will do the same for live TV or not. You can try, but I make no guarantees.Personally, I would go with option 1. Or just watch Internet TV on the laptop instead of live TV.

If it is a DLP, or LCD projection tv, then the resolution is probaby 1280X720 (aka 720P) Progressive. You have NO Anti-Virus software installed on that computer???
Jeez!! You could be loaded up with all kinds of bad stuff.

Have you tried setting up the media center slide show again?

Hello, I am new to the site and I need help, I have windows7 and my computer did an update and ever since then I have been having problems with the media center taking control over everything. I tried the programs and features to cut off media center, but cannot open any programs in the control panel, when I do this the media center clicks on whenever I try to open or download anything . I cannot open any files at all.

I use WindowsXP Home Edition, but I just got an Xbox 360 and I found out if you get Media Center you can stream music, videos, images etc from your pc over to your xbox 360. But ive tryed for ages to get it working and its not. But im wondering can you just get a program to use on Windows XP, or would I need to install Windows Media Center edition?

And if so, then can I just get that and upgrade my OS and still keep all my files and settings without having to reformat??

A:Using Media Center On XP?

You can't buy MCE to the best of my recalection.... It only comes pre-installed on MCE machines so you'd more than likely have to buy an MCE system.

I'm trying to re-install Vista Business on my laptop, but before I do that, I want to try something else:

Is it possible to install XP Pro over XP Media Center Ed. without having to reformat? My reason for asking is that Vista Business can be installed over XP Pro without having to clean the hard drive, but Vista Business cannot be installed over Media Center Ed. without erasing the hard drive.

I believe the disk is the full install for XP Pro; I got it from one of my programming classes up at college through the Microsoft student program.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry to bump this thread up, but does anyone have any suggestions?

If anyone from Microsoft happens to read this, or someone can pass a message on, me (and a load of others) would very much appreciate if you could please FIX THE UK EPG which has now expired on the 02/04/2016 so we no longer now get any guide data at all.
This has been logged at least three times on the official Microsoft Connect site with no response from MS at all.
All recordings, series links etc for ANYONE in the UK is currently broken and will not work. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE resolve this issue.

Thank you

When Windows comes up with a Wiindows Media Center Edition logon screen asking for a password. Previously I was able to automatically log in with a password but I did something to creat this issue and don't know how to undo it.

Also another issue, my System Restore will not allow me to go back to the previous day or several days. What is the problem here?

I am not computer literate Only here because I have the same problem and search occasionally on Google for a solution I have had the problem on two HP Media Center computers over a four-year span I don Media Center HP t understand all the stuff you people are saying I just HP Media Center want to tell you that you can watch the TV again Please feel free to ignore me unless you want to use the TV again until you figure a true fix You can you just need to keep rebooting without the internet turned on and do nothing else on the computer until you get it back Usually it just takes one or two cold boots to get it back Open Media Center diminish to say OK to the error message bring it back up wait a second try the TV You only get the live TV back and make sure to deal with it asking for the guide to be uploaded if you get that far which means turning on the internet and will probably require rebooting afterwards after turning off the internet again but not always After a Windows update it can take from six to twelve reboots to get it back You just have to be patient and not ask the computer to do anything else in the meantime and don t turn on the internet Have lots of other things to do Don t try to open it until fully re-booted until the yellow light stops doing much of anything I know it is connected to Windows updates because I watch the yellow light Don t laugh I have Norton and sometimes the yellow light is just a bleep indicating it is trying to swim in the stream I have dammed But Windows updates are the only thing that seems to stop Norton from completing its updates and they come together Norton can t complete update and no TV back on two or three reboots happen together after a Windows update It just seems to take my computer many many reboots to fully integrate whatever Windows is requiring of it in these updates Anyway you many need to get past the Norton issue to get the TV back After a few reboots with no TV back turn on the Internet and let Norton be happy or try a few more times until Norton can update Then keep rebooting until the TV comes back It will Trust me You won t be able to set a recording but otherwise all is working Recording works because you can rewind the live TV you are watching for quite a bit of time Everything works you just can t access it as intended If I want to use the TV I just leave minutes or so ahead of time to get it up and running unless there has been a Windows update in which case it could take a lot longer Time to polish the silver or something As I said please laugh because I am illterate But really you can use the live TV again Now can someone literate explain to me in my broken language how to fix it in a way that I would find possible Oh I should mention that the first time it happened HP had me wipe everything and reload And I lost everything that wasn t backed up and it didn t fix the problem At one point they decided I needed a new tuner card But that didn t work either It isn t a hardware problem and reloading everything doesn t fix the software problem Lastly I am stupid enough to enter this post in the wrong place It isn t where I intended it to be I apologize

I am not sure if this is the right area for this..but...I hope someone can help me. I have a Hewlett Packard Pavillion Entertainment PC with Windows Media Center software. I can record TV programs and copy them to DVD to watch them on my tv set. Some of the programs that I record, for example from HBO,when I go to burn them to DVD, it tells me that I cannot due to the show being protected.

Is there anyway around this? I want to be able to watch the move on my regular TV set?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Since you know that the video you are attempting to record / copy is protected, this thread is closed. It is violates the forum rules.

There is Windows Media Center, in five different versions. What do you mean exactly by "stean video"
Everything that is potentially available will be listed at the Microsoft xbox site.

Hi, Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Have just installed upgrade windows 8 to windows 7, downloaded the media center (wondered where it had gone to), I want to record a tv show and it has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark that tells me that it will not record because there is not enough room on the disc. There is over 500gb! I have checked that the storage folder is right, what now?
I am gradually getting used to windows 8 but a lot of programs I need can't be installed.
