I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

you need to set up your system to dual boot.

just google "dual booting vista and ubuntu" and you'll find lots of guides on how to get you set up.

Are you saying that...each of you is a user/has a profile on the same system...and you cannot use the keyboard properly but your wife can?

I have no idea what you are referring to as a "side".

I have primarily use a Dell Studio laptop I recently had a hard drive failure Luckily I cloned my entire hard drive to an external hard drive using Macrium Reflect I tried changing the boot order in the BIOS so that my laptop would boot from a USB device but this doesn t work I also tried using bootsect to make my external hard drive bootable but to no avail Can anyone give me any help with getting my laptop to run off the external hard drive The laptop in question no longer boots at all it crash dumps every time I try to turn it on and boot from the internal hard drive and it crashes when it automatically takes itself into Startup Repair Just thought I d add what I tried to do with bootsect Put bootsect exe into windows System quot Open cmd bcdboot c windows s c bootsect nt c mbr diskpart sel vol c act quot But the cmd said quot bootsect is not recognised as an internal or external command operable program or batch file quot nbsp

A:Trouble booting from an external hard drive

The BIOS in Dell laptop's doesn't usually give you a lot of options so it might not be possible to boot from USB. Presumably you'll be looking to replace the internal hard drive with a working one? If so, you could use a different system to clone the content of your external hard drive to the new internal one and then plug it into your Dell.

I want to install the hard drive from my broken 2008 HP tower (lightning strike) into my older 2002 Gateway. It was easy enough to plug in but it won't boot. I was able to finally get to a repair screen and it ran for 15 minutes then asked me to try starting again. The attempt failed.

You can't just switch the HD from one computer to another, that HD was set up for the HP components, you will have to format it and reinstall the operating system.

Let me start out by saying I know next to nothing about computers, but hopefully this is the right place for this.

I got a hard drive a while back, but when I wanted to put it in my computer I was told by someone I knew you needed some kind of plastic thing that slides the hard drive in, and that usually Dells have an extra one on the inside, but mine didn't. Does anyone know what these things are, or where I can get them? Everyone I've asked so far has had no idea what I was talking about.

A:Trouble putting a hard drive into my Dell Dimension E310

So how was the original hard drive held in place? It is customary to use the old rails on the new drive. What happened to the old hard drive?

You can go to a computer repair shop and ask then for the Dell rails. I even have a few here. Go back and take another look inside your computers case. The rails are in groups, located sometimes in the empty hard drive bays or attached to the inside of the case in various places. They are made of colored plastic usually green or blue

Hello SF!

Yesterday, i installed Windows 7 Home Premium on my sister's Dell Studio 1735, but there aren't W7 drivers for this model (Only Vista 32/64) and there are 2 devices i cant install cause WU can't find their drivers (Unknown Devices), i DO have the Recovery and OEM Partitions, to revert it to Win Vista, thing is i don't want to.. Win Vista STINKS!

So, there's any chance for me to actually install those 2 drivers? or should i revert it to Win Vista??

Thanks in advanced!

A:Dell Studio 1735

What devices are they? Look on the manufacturer's site for drivers. If you can't find any for 7, download the Vista ones. If they won't install, run them in compatibility mode for Vista.

So I was given a Dell Studio 1735. I decided just because I want too, that I wanna try and change the  i'm processor, and the motherboard. Particularly the motherboard with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. I'd like to assume that the processor can be upgraded as I could do that with a Inspiron E1505, but maybe i'm wrong. I was sure on the motherboard but I had a friend say that the motherboard would probably have different screw locations. So I figured I'd ask the community if this is possible. Thank you.

A:Upgrade my Dell Studio 1735

The only board that'll fit is a 1737 board - nothing else will fit.  It uses the same Core 2 CPU your system does, so there's not much of an upgrade there - yes,  you can fit 1066 MHz bus CPUs to the 1737 vs. the 1735, but the Core 2 is not exactly cutting edge.   Neither is the video chip much of an upgrade.
You're better off leaving the system as is and putting whatever you'd spend on such a modest upgrade toward a newer system - this one's a dead end technology-wise.

Hey everyone,

The display on my old Dell Studio 1735 died and I just got a refurbished one from Dell, same model. I'm wanting to add the HDD from the old computer to the new Dell in its second HDD bay. I have it removed but am not seeing anywhere to attach the connection. Is there a different caddy for the second drive bay? I thought I could just take the old computer's HDD and swap it into the new one's second bay since it has the caddy and connection already. I'm not seeing a connection anywhere hear the second bay,

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like you need a new caddy. As it says, this is only for the second bay so it must be different to the other one.

I have a 1535 Dell laptop - I want to get a new hard drive

I've logged onto the Dell website and have looked up my laptop's spec for the hard drive:

HARD DRIVE 320GB SATA (5400RPM)

Does this mean I *have* to get just SATA?
For example, I should NOT get SATA II?

SATA II hard drives have very good prices from what I can see
But no use buying if it's not compatible!

Thanks

I've got a 2.5" hdd from a broken laptop. Just ordered an enclosure off of newegg for it. Will I have any problems plugging it into my desktop? Like will it read right away or is there something I'll have to do first?

Only thing I'm worried about is this:
My desktop is running Windows XP SP3
The laptop hdd has Windows XP SP3 installed on it

Will it boot the desktop copy of XP? And will having XP installed on the laptop hdd make it difficult to access the files I need to backup?

I have a Dell Laptop with a 80 GB drive and I am running out of room. I went to the store and got a much larger drive (I think 320 GB), a USB transfer cable and Norton Ghost.

I have run Ghost 3 times and each time I replace the old drive with the new one the computer can't seem to see the new drive with the Ghosted data. Even when I have the old drive install and the new one connect via the SATA to USB adapter will not read the drive even though the Vista see the USB device and says that it is ready to use.

A:Hard drive upgrade for Dell laptop

Update the BIOS to the latest version.

DELL site reports this unit:

Single Drive:

5400 RPM hard drives up to 250GB or optional 7200 RPM Free Fall Sensor hard drive at 160GB56.

Dual Drive:
Up to 320GB configured with (2 x 160GB) 5400 RPM hard drives.

Okay so you can do the same thing with the 320GB or just leave it as a full partition. Download the latest BIOS for the unit. If not then you're might be stuck with 2 partition on 320GB new drive. Since a single can support 250GB you might get away with 320GB. Odd configuration. Even 500GB with 2x partitions of 250GB should also work. Just have to test it and see.

A:Dell latitude 800 laptop hard drive

tech support did not walk you through the removal of the drive? It is standard practice for techs to walk customers through how to remove the drive when determining to replace it. reseating the drive is one of the standard TS steps.
Anyway, is this a D800 or a C800? On the D800, locate the headphone jacks, you'll note that there is a cutout area around it and a screw just under the bottom edge of the system, remove that screw and pull the drive out. On the C800, the drive is located center of the right side, you'll notice a rectangle cutout with a single screw through it(if you have an IR port, it is located on the faceplate for the hdd) remove that screw, slide the plate up, grasp it firmly and pull the drive out.

Hey guys-

I'm pretty heartbroken on this one....My 20Giig HD for my Inspiron 8100 bit the dust.

I was fairly well backed up, but am missing my 3 YO daughter's birthday party and first day of school JPEGs. I tried jumping as a secondary on another PC- (this worked in a similar inceident few yrs back) and at first it recognized the drive and then made alot of wrilling and clicking noises and then it would not assign it a drive and allow me to get at it..... A few more re-boots and it will not recognize it.

Do any of you guys have any suggestions? OR would it be worth my while to get it to one of these "data recovery firms"? And hope they don't gouge to badly.....

Thanks in Advance,

A:Dead Dell Laptop Hard Drive

Try freezing it in the deep freeze for an hour (in a plastic bag) then accessing it before it warms up.

Its usually good for one try only, but has a measure of success depending on the nature of the failure.

Think many many hundreds of $ for professional recovery if the drive needs disassembly to extract the data.

The hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 700m died recently, and I've been meaning to replace it. When talking with my friends about it, they told me that they've "heard" that Dell laptop hard drives are custom-shaped for their laptops, so if I just go out and buy a generic hard drive, it might not fit. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Right now, I'm using a spare hard drive that one of my friends let me borrow (also from a Dell laptop--so we don't know if the aforementioned rumor is true or not), and it's working fine. Which leads me to my second question: after I buy a new hard drive, if I just directly transfer all the data from my friend's spare hard drive to the new one, will everything run properly?

Thanks in advance!

Here's what I am working on.

Dell: P-233 Latitude Laptop

Here's what I have done:

I got this computer used. I formatted the hard drive first, then I went into FDISK.
I noticed that when I hit Diplay info it shows this:

Partition: C:
Status: A
Type: Pri DOS
Mbytes: 2047
Usage: 66%

What Im concerned about is why does it show 66% usage? Does this mean it is only using 66% of the Hard drive? And if so how do I set it to get 100%?
When I set the percentage to l00 I notice it will still say only 66%...

Thanks......

Also: What WIN operating system in your opinion would work best with this computer being only a P233? I see it says it was built for WIN95/NT....

thanks again

A:Dell P-233 Laptop - Hard Drive Usage says only 66% - Need Help!

Sounds like you used an old version of FDISK or you did not enable large disk support when it asked in FDISK. Windows 95 at first only support a 2 Gig partition. Later versions support bigger partitions. What Windows are you using? If 95 you will have to just create an extended partition and format it. If Windows 98 you must use the windows 98 Fdisk to delete and create a new partition and don't forget to enable large disk support.

The goal would be to swap drives and keep going but if I have to purchase a new OS it may not be worth it.

A:Replacing Laptop Hard Drive - Dell Latitude

Toshiba makes a very good drive. We rate it among the top three, along with Seagate, Western Digital, and Fusjitsu. In our repair shop over the past 20 years, Toshiba has been our most reliable drive. A 5400 rpm drive will last longer than a 7200 rpm drive, and that speed will be noticeable...
Also look at www.directron.com, www.zipzoomfly.com, www.TigerDirect.com, and PCMall.com among others... prices vary almost daily.

Be sure you are getting the right type of drive... some are SATA, SATAII, EIDE, and ATA6...

It is difficult to return hard drives, so be sure you are getting what you need.

The 320 GB is a good choice, and will be almost as inexpensive as the 160... and most certainly less costly per gigabyte.

If the 'recovery disk' has the Windows OS install on it or if it is a Repair Disk used to boot and then reinstall using the
Windows in the Recovery partition, then all you need to do is pop in the disk and reinstall following prompts. No need to
format using any other program. The clean install will wipe out any malware on the hdd.

my old toshiba ATA 6 hard drive failed. so i purchased a seagate ata-100 hard drive from new egg. i installed the new hard drive and loaded the windows recovery cd. when in windows XP home edition setup it says,

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or set up program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3.

also in BIOS it says primary hard drive source: none

any ideas on how to get the hard drive working

A:Solved: Dell 600m laptop new hard drive not recognized

What were the symptoms of the previous drive failure?
Can you see this drive in the BIOS or the splash screen?
Can you hear the drive spin up?
Double check your installation.
It's possible some other component has failed.

Hello I posted about a month ago when my -month-old Dell Inspiron N was stuck in a startup repair loop It needed a new hard drive which I installed myself and everything worked great for a couple weeks Then the constant freezing started I thought it was Firefox since that was what I was using most often but it turned out that everything would eventually start hanging--Word Task Manager iTunes it even froze on shutdown a couple times I tried disabling and reinstalling all the plugins in Firefox I ran virus scans and diagnostics and troubleshooters and chkdsk and no issues were ever found--until I think I downloaded Microsoft NET framework when a Dell diagnostic tool asked me to And finally the constant freezing stopped But then Dell hard constantly hangs Replaced now laptop drive, it started again a couple days ago The computer starts up fine but within a few minutes it will start hanging regularly--like every seconds the cursor either won't move or clicking on something gives me a Not Responding Replaced hard drive, now Dell laptop constantly hangs message at the top of the window This lasts anywhere from seconds to a few minutes When I open Task Replaced hard drive, now Dell laptop constantly hangs Manager the CPU usage fluctuates wildly when Task Manager itself isn't frozen --it's usually at around - but will rise all the way to and then down to This is when I just have one or two programs running--Firefox and Word--and I don't have many startup programs nor a lot of programs or files on the computer in general Once again all the Windows Dell Malwarebytes and Avast scans find no problems and everything is apparently up to date I did just disable Flash Player in Firefox after noticing there were two Flash processes running in Task Manager that has actually made it a little better but it's still frozen a couple times while I've been writing this post Can anyone give me any ideas about what might be causing this and how I can fix it I'm not sure what other information you might need about the computer but here's what I know it's a Dell Inspiron N running a clean install of Windows -bit I just installed a new Western Digital hard drive GB RPM Thanks

A:Replaced hard drive, now Dell laptop constantly hangs

Can you boot into safe mode? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
Try running the computer for a while in safe mode and see if the problem continues. If it doesn't, it may be a problem with one or more of your drivers. When you installed the new hard drive, did you use the Dell install CD or just a generic Windows 7 CD? Dells use very specific drivers and it's best to install the OS using one of their install disks.
You may want to try a clean boot and performing some diagnostics. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
It's hard to say at this point what it could be -- this kind of behavior usually indicates an issue with driver and/or system files not loading properly and hogging all the processor bandwidth.

A:secondary hard disk drive 0 not found on a dell laptop what do I do?

The bios in your laptop was set up to use your old drive, the specs on your new drive will be different.

First off, have a look at the drive you took out to see if it was set to master, slave, or cable select. To do this, have a look at the back end of the drive near the connector for the jumper setting, then make sure your new drive is set the same.

Then you need to go into the bios and look for any options to scan for hard drives (this will scan for optical drives too). You need to make sure its set to your new drive and not your old one.

If you don't know how to do any of this the your manual will help, if you don't have it you can probably download one from dell.

If you still have problems then let me know and i will do my best to help further.

I Drive Dell 1150 - Laptop Overheating Vs Error Hard Inspiron have been asked to look into Laptop Dell Inspiron 1150 - Hard Drive Error Vs Overheating a problem with a Dell inspiron laptop concerning an intial BSOD error which is intermittent and has happened twice and only twice in the last week according to its owner I witnessed the error today but unfortunately did not note any particulars of the error What I did notice was that the error happened when the power was supplied by the AC adaptor The hard drive emitted a continuous clicking noise as if it were trying to boot after and at the BSOD On turning the laptop over to its underside with the BSOD on screen I noted that the fan was still On the BSOD on pressing the power on button with power supply in the BIOS reports that there is no bootable device and does not provide any access to a HDD menu in setup On removing the power supply jack and rebooting from the battery pack the laptop boots perfectly While writing this post the laptop has emitted two click type noises and the screen has frozen I am now of the humble opinion that there is an overheating problem here since the underside of the laptop is warm and the fan has stopped - - at present the laptop turns on then swiftly back off again regardless of where the power is sourced I have advised the owner to purchase a cool mat to alleviate the heat build up since there is a paltry sized fan supplying air flow to the components Is this a common problem with Dell inspiron laptops all laptops or is there a fundamental hard drive problem approaching I will be backing her data up this evening if I can get the laptop on again Many thanks for your help and opinions Darren

A:Laptop Dell Inspiron 1150 - Hard Drive Error Vs Overheating

In this case I would call Dell tech support they may be of some help and have them check the part number of the AC Adapter for the unit. It may be the wrong one. If the unit boots which apparently it does I suggest until you verify the proper power supply that you do not use the pwoer supply, if the polarity is wrong for the computer and I think it is there could be damage to the computer, the noise you hear from the hard drive is probably the hard drive running backwards or trying to.

As for the BSOD if you can get the error message for us and/or Dell tech support it would be most helpful

Hi all i have a dell sc420 and my specs are pentium 4 2.8 ht and 512mb ram. The problem is that when i boot up the computer it makes a loud siren noise maybe about 4-5 times. Also during that time the cooling fan gets a lot louder for some reason. I dont know if it is the power supply or cooling fan. The monitor screen stays black and doesnt work. Any help would be nice thank you.

A:dell having trouble with booting up making the siren noise

Well siren noises aren't my specialty but I'll give it a shot.
Can you smell anything burning?
Do you hear/see the fans turn on? If it doesn't POST, ie. screen blank, it's either dead CPU or dead 5Volt output on the power supply (assuming the graphics card and display is/was working).
Is the siren sound coming from the speakers or some part of the PC?
Do you hear any beeps during/before/after the siren noise?

Have you tried a Repair Install using your XP CD?

Doing A Repair Install In Windows XP!
Make sure you have your valid Windows XP key.
The whole process takes about half an hour depending on your computer.

If you are being prompted for the administrator's password, you need to choose the 2nd repair option, not the first.
1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD
2. At the second R=Repair option, press the R key
3. This will start the repair
4. Press F8 for I Agree at the Licensing Agreement
5. Press R when the directory where Windows XP is installed is shown. Typically this is C:\WINDOWS
6. It will then check the C: drive and start copying files
7. It will automatically reboot when needed. Keep the CD in the drive.
8. You will then see the graphic part of the repair that is like during a normal install of XP (Collecting Information,

Dynamic Update, Preparing Installation, Installing Windows, Finalizing Installation)
9. When prompted, click on the Next button
10. When prompted, enter your XP key
11. Normally you will want to keep the same Workgroup or Domain name
12. The computer will reboot
13. Then you will have the same screens as a normal XP Install
14. Activate if you want (usually a good idea)
15. Register if you want (but not necessary)
16. Finish
17. At this point you should be able to log in with any existing accounts.

If the intent is to retrieve files from the hard drive...remove it and attach it as a secondary drive to another system...and move the data files desired.

After that...you can attempt to troubleshoot system issues.

A:Trouble booting from CD on Acer laptop

There are two methods. The first is a virtual machine, which will let you test in a virtual environment whilst within Windows, but performance is not representative as you only use virtualised hardware. Fortunately, there's a way of installing Ubuntu on your hard drive from within Windows: Wubi.

http://wubi-installer.org/

Give that a try.

The best thing about it is that if you find you don't like Ubuntu and want to remove it, all you do is go to Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features and uninstall it through there. Have fun!

Hey guys,

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it.

I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.

I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times).

I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

I am all out of ideas; I'm currently taking apart the computer (touchsmarts are hard to pry open), but I have no clue about computers so I'm hoping one of you guys can help.

Thanks in advance!

I bought a new drive recently (1TB) to replace my older drive (250GB).

I started by installing it as a drive E:\ - I then used Norton Ghost to clone my original C:\ drive to the new drive.

Then I took out the old drive to try to boot from the new one.

Basically it went to the blue Windows booting graphic, but got stuck there.

When I used the Symantec Recovery Disk to see why, I saw that the new volume is still designated as Drive E:\... so no wonder it's not working properly.

Any ideas on how to force my computer to see the drive as C:?

Thanks,
WASSIM

Hello All Ok here is the problem I have a machine here where booting drive (vista) cloned Trouble the HD has a couple of pending sectors It still boots fine no data has been lost regular backups are being kept I am trying to clone the original HD to another HD using clonezilla all other cloning software choke and never complete Clonezilla does HOWEVER the new drive is not bootable When I try I am told that there was a problem and into insert my vista disk to fix the problem Well that is fine IF you have a vista disk This is a HP machine which as you probably know they only give you a quot recovery quot partition disk which wipes the drive and restores it back to when you bought the machine They don t give you any Microsoft start up tools other then reverting to a restore point The guy does not want to wipe and rebuild everything just clone it over to a new drive which I have done but it won t boot A Vista recovery disk would work but the only one I found is by Neosmart and they want for it While that is better than buying a copy of Vista it seems like I should be Trouble booting cloned (vista) drive able to do repair the startup data in another fashion Would a windows disk work I am assuming not and would cause more problems I have seen tools to create a recovery disk but again it requires having a Vista disk in the first place which if you already have a Vista disk why would you need to build a emergency recovery disk that does the same thing One other thing I thought of EasyBCD and using that to copy the boot manager info from the original drive to the clone Although it is strange that Clonezilla wouldn t have copied that in the first place Any thoughts nbsp

A:Trouble booting cloned (vista) drive

If the problem is really "only" that there is an issue with the boot then a Windows 7 Installation DVD or a Windows 7 System Repair Disk will likely fix the boot problem as well as a Vista Installation DVD would.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster. NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.I will try to help you get the computer back but these are the hardest to work on first I need to know if this is a 32bit or 64 bit systemgringo

Hi folks,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 lappy that will not boot into Windows XP.
The error message I get is:

hal.dll is missing or corrupt, replace or re-install file
<windows Root>/system32/hal.dll

This is where it all ends. If I go into DOS and look at the contents of C: everytime i try to go into a directory,e.g: cd windows - I get an Access Denied message.
I need to save the data on this drive so I cannot just re-install the OS over the top with the Dell disks.
Any ideas how I can get either into the sys32 folder or how i can copy the contents to another drive? (I did buy an IDE to 2.5HDD cable but the connection is different from the Dell HDD!)

Many thanks for any help!!!

Hi All!

I'm currently trying to get a Dell Inspiron 1505 Laptop working.

The problem is as follows.

The machine detects the hard drive, and begins to boot up into Windows Vista, however, just goes blank and does nothing

I tried using startup recovery, left it for 3 hours, still nothing

I've tried reinstalling using the Dell OS installation disc, which starts, says "please wait" and stays that way.

Has anyone got any ideas? I don't really want to jump straight into thinking the Hard Drive is knackered, I was thinking maybe the boot sector was being problematic???

I have run the ultimate boot CD and attempted to do a Hard Drive health check, however that just says "please wait" and does nothing

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions they would be most appreciated

Regards

Chris

OK, the answer to this was as follows:

I used the ultimatebootcd to format the drive (windows CD/DVD would not do it)

Used XP to then format in NTFS format, then installed Vista from there

A:Problem with Dell Inspiron Laptop Not Booting

Since this is a Windows XP machine.

How long ago do this problem start? If you think it's software related, you might want to try and reboot into safe mode.

Press the F8 key when the PC is booting up. This will get you into the Windows XP startup menu. Boot into safe mode, and start the System Restore program. Restore your OS to an earlier date. Keep restoring to earlier date past the time you last remember having any problems with the system. If the problem is indeed software related, Windows XP System Restore should take care of the problem.

My Dell Laptop was given to a technician to change the screen frame as it was broken.

The hard disk was removed to copy some urgently required files for office.

I connected the hard disk to hp laptop, copied the files, chose the Hide option of Pictures folder in hard disk inorder to hide the Pictures folder, and gave back the hard disk to the technician to fix it.

After fixing it, he told the Windows is corrupted. I got the laptop back to check it.

After booting, it goes to a black screen. I tried in safe mode also. It still goes to a black screen.

Startup repair runs for a while and it again goes to a black screen with cursor.

Kindly reply me, if you have any solution.

whenever I boot my laptop it shows that the function key F2 is on and the laptop straight way goes to Bios screen. After pressing the Esc key the bios screen goes, then the laptop boots to windows. I have formatted the c drive updated the drivers but the problem remained unsolved. I have taken out the battery and pressed the start switch for sometime to drain the static power but nothing happened. You are requested to help me out from this problem.

can anyone tell a trusted website where i might find the driver for a dell a960 all-in-one for my hp pavilion laptop? i tried the dell website and according to their info, the driver they provide is only compatible with dell computers. i did go ahead and installed it anyway and sure enough, the printer would not function...unless i am reading something wrong form them. thank you in advance.

A:Buying a Dell laptop? You are in for trouble

Same laptop, same problems. What a piece of junk this 3147 is.
It all started 14 months after I bought it with some of the keys not working or only working intermittently. I kind of found a temporary fix to that problem. It wasn't easy to implement but makes the keyboard usable for now.
Then after updating the BIOS to A09 the laptop started crashing after waking up from sleep. I had to install BIOS A07 back in order to get it working, going to sleep and waking up properly again. Well, almost properly.
The next problem I discovered was the excessive CPU use and touchscreen behaving really oddly after waking from sleep mode. That I could fix by changing the power plan from DELL power plan to Power Saver and also changing some of the settings in the power plan. That partially fixed the problem.
There are two more serious issues I haven't been able to find a workaround yet. The first is that if the display dims and turns off and then turns on again, the touchscreen starts its erratic behavior.  The second is that if I put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid, it wakes up with the touchscreen acting strangely. To make the laptop usable for now I changed the power plan settings to keep the display on all the time before it goes to sleep and I also put it to sleep and wake it by only using the power button.
There are a whole bunch of other issues I consider minor compared to the ones I mentioned.
I design electronic broadcasting equipment for living and I have seen a lot of good and not so good designs but I have never seen anything so incompetently designed as this laptop. I don't know what is going on with DELL. They use to be a decent name but nowadays that name is a symbol of overpriced junk.

After many attempts to load the OS on this Laptop (Dell Latitude, 1.2 Ghrz, 5k Mem) I've recieved the below error message.

"windows could not load the installer for battery, please call tech support"

Anybody have any idea how to resolve this problem?

Thanks

A:Trouble loading XP Pro on Dell Laptop

Try going to device manager and finding the battery, then uninstall it, then reboot the pc and windows should reinstall it. That may help.

Please advise,
I installed a HGST 500 gb hard drive on my Dell E6410 Latitude Laptop.
But it says:
No Boot device found! Can't go to BIOS either!
Re installed the original and it works fine!
Wish to know whether the HGST is compatible with Dell Latitude.
THank you.

A:HGST Laptop hard drivesvs Dell E6410 Hard drives.

It won't boot until you install an operating system (windows) on it. however you should be able to get to BIOS.

I see it can be done from an installed to an external, but can it be done in reverse, taking the external cased hard drive and cloning it to an internal? The old hard drive is from an xp laptop, and I can aquire another xp laptop if I can clone this way. Perhaps if I set the enclosure hard drive as master? All ideas are greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Hello,
Yesterday i added my mates hard drive in my PC via SATA, i then installed windows 7 on it for him.
So i had 2 hard drives with windows 7 on.
I then took out his hard drive and rebooted my PC, When i start to load, it says missing or corrupt files (It's looking for his hard drive) How do i make it look for mine instead of his?

It comes up with look a dual boot option saying
Windows 7
Windows 7, although the top one is corrupt as the hard drive isn't there.

Thankyou
Matt

I m having a problem with a laptop that will not boot up Lenovo C Windows XP Home After powering it it up it seems booting drive from hard Not like it does not recognize that the hard drive is there so XP does not boot No error message It brings up a Boot Device menu screen with the options to boot from Floppy does not have one HardDisk does not work CD-ROM Not booting from hard drive or PXE Choosing HardDisk does not work In the BIOS screen the hard disk has the status quot Disable quot and there does not seem to be a way to change that In the BIOS boot sequence the hard disk appears as it should I ve tried reordering the sequence but it makes no difference So it may sounds like the hard drive is bad BUT here is the big BUT Using a freeware bootable CD ROM BartPE I am actually able to see all my data is still on the hard drive I can navigate around the drive and things look fine This is very encouraging but I can t figure out what to do next The laptop came preloaded with Win XP and did not come with installation repair CDs so don t have one The user manual explains how to run the recovery program off the hard drive by pressing the LenovoCare button during startup but this does not work I would guess because the HD is not found I am wondering even if I decided to try to acquire disks to reinstall the OS if that would fix this problem Or is it something else like the hardware or BIOS etc Doesn t seem like hardware since I can see the hardrive with that boot CD what could be wrong nbsp

My computer yesterday was an XP machine with one hard drive I another hard to drive Booting wanted to test Windows but I was afraid I would screw something up with my XP drive Booting to another hard drive in the process We'll call this Drive A Booting to another hard drive Yesterday I bought a new hard drive Drive B I downloaded the Windows ISO got some drivers and turned off my computer I physically removed Drive A from the computer and put Drive B in I started the computer and put the DVD in Setup was fine I had some trouble with getting the onboard NIC to work but I was able to overcome Now I needed to get back into my XP install to get some stuff done play video games I shut my computer down pulled out Drive B put Drive A back in and booted up But I got a boot error message and it looks like it's a Windows Boot error message How can this be if I removed the hard drive xc e The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible It's almost as if my computer is trying to boot to Windows even though I removed the hard drive containing the operating system How do I get into my XP system The drive is fine I connected it as a slave and I can access the files on there I'm guess Windows makes some kind of change on the motherboard that forces it to boot to Thanks for any help

A:Booting to another hard drive

sounds in deed very strange, there is no way windows can write a boot loader in a bios-based machine.

are you really sure, that this was a win7 message? AFAIK this message is the same in XP, so it might be a misunderstanding.

Did you put the drive to the same connector? (e.g. sata1 or ata1) as before?

another thing came in my mind: was or is a memory stick connected to your machine?

If you have really a win7 message, there might be a rare chance, that the win installer had put something to the stick, what means your computer try to boot from this stick.

how do you boot from usb hard disk with windows xp

A:booting from usb hard drive

The system must support booting from a USB drive, not all systems can. If you have a boot menu you can access usually by press F10, F11, or F12 you should be able to select the USB drive if the system supports it. You can also check in the BIOS to see if it is an option.

Without knowing the make and model of the system it's difficult to give more specific direction.
