Media sharing option keeps shutting off by itself

Q: Media sharing option keeps shutting off by itself

I'm having an issue with my media sharing options in Network and Sharing on all my computers on my network. When I go to network & sharing to turn on media sharing for some reason by itself it gets turn off?? This is frustrating to have to continually reset it on all computers on my network. They all have the same Home Group password, but still it gets turn off somehow. Can anyone Please tell me what am I doing wrong or what the problem is causing this to happen???

Preferred Solution: Media sharing option keeps shutting off by itself

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My media sharing option constantly keeps turning off by itself even after I have reset it to share my media on all networked (4) computers and even while watching movies from another computer on my network, I have also enabled media sharing thru Windows media player and it still cuts itself off! can anyone help with this issue??

Which version of Windows do you have? Make sure services for media share are enabled.
You might have to

press start key + r at the same time then type: services.msc

Computer Browser (started/manual)

DHCP Client (started/auto)
DNS Client (started/auto)

Function Discovery Resource Publication (started/auto)

start/auto/enable Homegroup Listener
start/auto/enable Homegroup Provider

Network Connections (started/manual)
Network List Service (started/manual)

Peer Name Resolution Protocol (started/manual)
Peer Networking Grouping (started/manual)
Peer Networking Identity Manager (started/manual)

SSDP Discovery (started/manual)

Also check on your system for software that is disabling sharing just our right like cleaners all-in-one does it because in theory suppose to reduce over head.

Well, I'm not sure what to do here. Up until a few days ago I was sharing my media with all computers on my network on my wireless router.

Now when I log into windows and open WMP 11 it says that I am no longer sharing media, would you like to turn on sharing? So I say yes and confirm to share my media to all devices on my network, mainly my PS3.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it (well it actually just reverted back). I also checked to make sure that Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service is set to automatic in Admin tools. And also checked windows firewall that it allows the service.

So I am at a loss here, I don't know how to get my media sharing capabilites back. I know its not my PS3, as I am sharing media from my laptop right now. Any suggestions?

Thanks High

A:Solved: Windows Media Player 11 Media Sharing Problems

PS3 and Vista Sharing Sorted
Found it. Disabled IPSEC Services and rebooted my router and hey presto media sharing in vista with PS3. Although I had disabled this before and restarted my computer I had not rebooted the router (ie turned it off and on again). This was the important thing on my set up and I missed it.

Funny thing is IPSEC Services do not have to be disabled in XP.

Hope this helps someone.

This actually worked for my Windows XP, I am now able to share, but is this a safe thing to have turned off?

Hey everyone,

I am having troubles sharing my Windows Media Player 11 library on my Vista machine with my Windows XP computer.

Both players are sharing media the same way and automatically allowing new devices to connect.

My roommates computer see's both libraries as well as my Vista Computer. The XP machine does not see the shared library.

I have Trend Micro PC Cillin on my Vista machine. It is connected by cat5 to a Linksys Wireless router in gateway mode.

On my XP machine i have AVG antivirus with no firewall installed. It is connect to the Linksys wirelessly - bu so is my roomates laptop.

On both machines i have the latest .net framwork installed and on the xp machine i installed windows media connect.

I cant figure it out, i think it is a software problem and not a physical network problem.

any ideas?

From the help screens for the application, I noticed that Windows Media Sharing must be disabled, or the 360 will not see TVersity server at all. I have Windows Media Center (included with Vista Premium). I believe I have found the option to disable sharing in "Network and Sharing Center". However, the "CHANGE" button doesn't do anything! I can click it, but it doesn't do anything! Any ideas? This is pretty much a clean install of Vista. Thanks!

I'm new to the forum, so forgive me if this is in the wrong place. I recently reformatted my Toshiba Satellite A100 Laptop with the Windows XP cd, I reinstalled all the drivers (or what I think is all of them), and everything is working how its supposed to, except for one thing. In my network connection properties, under the advanced tab, before I reformatted my computer I had an option to share my internet connection. However, after the reformat, the option is not available to me. At first I was told to download service pack 2, however I had already downloaded service pack 3,thus it would not allow me to install service pack 2 on top of it. Is that my problem? If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all,

If I disable the windows firewall, I am able to turn on file sharing and network discovery. However, if I turn the firewall on, every time I try to enable file sharing and network discovery, they wont turn on..

I tried to go into the firewall settings and enable file sharing but it's not an option that's available?

Windows 7 has been one problem after another when trying to do anything that involves networking/sharing..

If network discovery isn't staying on then you have a bigger problem than just enabling sharing which is done through the Advanced Network Settings at the Network and Sharing Center.

This problem has come up many times and is typically fixable by repairing the base filtering engine which is the actual cause of the problem with network discovery not staying on.

The following link shows you how to fix this problem.

I'm trying to share my windows media player library that is on my win 7 pc with my xp laptop.

I can navigate from my laptop to folders on my win 7 pc and play files that way but I'm trying to get the library option working.

Both computers are in the same workgroup and are both visable in the same workgroup from my xp laptop. However if I go into network on my win7 pc I can see the laptop in the computer section but not in the media device section.

When i then go into the sharing options on the win7 windows media player i can not see the xp laptop so I can't allow sharing.

I guess the problem is that my xp laptop is only showing up as a computer and not a media device? anyone know why this is?

I have turned of my firewall to check that and it has no effect.

You can't share Library's with any computer other than Windows 7. Library sharing can only work if all the machines in the LAN are Windows 7. Although you should be able to stream and share your music using Workgroups.

You should be able to share the WMP files by making these adjustments. Click on more media options to allow for media sharing with your XP machine.

Hi everyone. I'm having a problem with my laptop, I used to be able to share my internet when I created a wireless ad-hoc network. (I used this network to connect my mobile phone via WIFI and use my laptop's internet on the phone) Unfortunately I've only manage to do that the first 2 days, after that when I try to create a ad-hoc wireless network, it doesn't show the option "Internet Sharing" any more.
I had to make it work again, so I've restored the PC to a previous date. And it worked, but only for the first 2 days again.
Does anybody have a clue why the "Internet Sharing" option disappears from the network creation manager, after a while????
Thanks in advance.

Any suggestions about how I should best create recovery media?  I am familiar with having the DVDs shipped with computers from Dell.  That's not the case now I guess. Try the fix at Kelly's Korner.Remove Media Player from Toolbars - Undo - #293 on the left.Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

went to play some videos yesterday and windows media player just opened and froze and i had to end task which made it dissapear but it was still active in task manager. tried the video in VLC, could hear it but the program hadn't loaded. ran itunes, it didn't appear but was in task manager. i go to shutdown and it stays on 'shutting down' screen all night.

anyone have the faintest of idea how i can sort this problem?

First if this is not in the correct category please move it I have a fairly extensive collection of movies TV series as well as personal pictures and Sharing Media home videos I would like to make these avaialbe to my kids one of which lives in another city as well as a couple of friends as well as myself being able to access them when I Media Sharing am either on holdiays or at someone else s home Of course security is a major issue and while I want to make the above available I don t want them to have access to my entire system or network In addition I want them to be able to view the media but not change delete or rename anything From my limited understanding of networking I believe there is choices The first would be to buy network drives hooked directly to the router and only have the shared media on these drives I would assume this would be the preferred way of doing it but the problem is that network drives are quite a bit more expensive and I would have to buy a second router as I would not have enough ports available on my existing router The second would be to have external USB drives attached to two of the computers in my netwrk but am unsure if these could be accessed through the interent Assuming they can be will having someone access these drives slow down the systems they are attached to How do I allow sharing of the media files only while still having shared access to other files and printers on my network only and not avaiable to people I want to give access to the media files only Would the speed be adequate to permit watching video over the itnernet without freezing The third would be to buy a router with a USB port The problem here is that I have only seen routers with one USB port Even with a TB drive I would not be able to have everything on that drive I was looking at the Belkin router which has a USB port but from reading one of the reivews of this router it was noted that access to the drive connected to the USB port was very slow They didn t go into detail as to what quot slow quot was so don t know whether it was simply slow in comparison to what the performance would be if connected direcdtly to a computer or if it was quot slow quot to the point that one could not really watch video as it would be freezing all the time The upside of this setup is that it allows a guest password and that you can set it so the guest only has access to the drive connected to the USB port on the router and nothing else on the network I also read a review on a D-Link with a USB port and one of the criticisms was that only one user could access the USB drive at a time This may also be the case with the Belkin however the review didn t mention it so don t if that is the case but if it is then that would not be the answer either I would appreciate knowing whether this can be done and what would be the best way to do it while maintaining security and not killing the performance on the network or computers the drives are connected to Thank you nbsp

I have a Denon AV receiver that has the capability to stream media from my PC.
Problem is that my Vista Ultimate x64 machine will detect the device when WMP is running, but the Denon device does not see the x64 machine.

I have another machine running Vista Ultimate x32 behing the exact same router, which also detects the Denon receiver and the Denon receiver will see this PC.

All firewall settings, etc appear to be the same on both machines.

Any advice/suggestions/ideas why this is not working for me on the x64 machine ?

PS3 Media Server is very good and does convert on the fly also. TVersity works with other hardware besides PS3.

Is there any technology that allows the sharing of media player?
Such as, I am watching a movie on DVD or VCD and my sister can use her computer to view what I am watching. I can send pics by e-mail, I can send streaming video, videos created by webcam, etc, so I wondered if media player sharing was possible. Or copy a DVD somehow on a file and send to my sister so she can open that file and view the same DVD on her media player.

You can copy DVD's only if you have a DVD-RW, or DVD-R. And, a burning program, such as Nero.

is she on the same network, or across the Web? Also, which version of WMP and Windows are you using?

I posted this a while back, but didn't really get an explaination, theories, or solutions.

I have a basic Home Network. 4 computers on the network. Mix of wireless and wired computers. I can send files between the PCs just fine.

For some reason the Playstation 3 does not show up under the network. I can seem to manage to get media sharing working ONLY if I have the PS3 hard wired to the modem, but not wireless, if the PC is wired. If the PC is wireless and the PS3 is wireless it works, but not wired.

For some reason I cannot get cross connection, for lack of a better work, media server working. Any insight? I have a crappy netgear Wireless Comcast router if that helps.

Edit: Apparently wireless to wired doesn't work regardless of PC or PS3.

I have four PC on my network, two XP (XP-1, XP-2) and Two Vista (Vista-1, Vista-2). All are up-to-date. All running Media Player 11.

I am trying to share (serve) media mainly from XP-2.

When I open the Library | Media Sharing dialog in Media Player on either of the Vista PCs it lists all three other PC in "Share my media to:" and sharing works fine.

When I open the dialog on either XP PC; I only see the Vista PCs and not the XP PCs. Since I am mainly trying to see the media on XP-1 served by XP-2 this is very frustrating.

On the Vista PCs you can show the Entire Network and it lists the Media Servers on both XP PCs.

I have tried all the obvious things like turning off firewalls etc.

However, when I activate media sharing on WMP11, and make it so any device should be able to get the media, there is no connection to the PS3.

I am not sure if there is a special setup for the PS3, or if I need a program. According to the F.A.Q. on several sites, I have done this correctly. Should the PS3 be showing up in my networks? It isn't showing up, and I am at a lose of what to do.

I am on a home network (wireless), and would like to share my media with my XBox 360 and other laptops. When I go into WMP, and click Media Sharing, a window pops up with an unchecked box which says "Share my media". I check the box and click OK, but then WMP freezes for a while, then comes back but with nothing changed. The box remains checked but I cant actually say ok. The only way I can get the window to go away is by clicking Cancel or the X. also, the OK button works fine if the box isn't checked.

What could possibly be causing this? Other computers share media on the same network without any problems.

Programs play on a computer. A media player is a program.

You can move a program to anothe rcomputer but not 'share' the execution of the program between computers.

You can share data files that contain music, video, etc. but they will need to be played on a single computer.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
PING <computer name>

<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
TCP/IP Netbios helper

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Now all the devices are gone and I cannot find a way to refresh the list and just see the devices actually on my network right now. Anyone know how to do this?

Media sharing ON seems like a convenient idea that would be beneficial in my home "workgroup". Does it work smoothly? Or does it lead to slowdowns, difficulties on the network?

Just a desktop and laptop for now. Later, a smart tv.

A:Downside to setting Media Sharing to ON?

Keep media sharing/streaming on if you need to use DLNA or Samba protocol for easy media streaming. There should be no downside to this (and to your internet connection) as long as the bandwidth is sufficient. On wired networks, you should have no issues streaming 1080p H.264 videos on LAN as long as the bandwidth is 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps. With WiFi, you run in to bandwidth/latency issues unless you're using 5 GHz 802.11n or 802.11ac which I highly recommend if you choose the WiFi route.

I have been streaming 1080p videos (from TV apps or DLNA server) with my smart TV while downloading/streaming from my 3 other devices without a single streaming lag from DLNA server to Smart TV over WiFi 5 GHz 802.11n.

I am trying to enable Media Sharing with my Xbox 360 and I have already read threads here with the same problem, but mine goes one step further. I will explain the problem in full and all of the steps I've currently taken.

I have Windows Media Player 11 and Windows XP, Zune also would not work.

I go to Library and Media Sharing, the window pops up, I click enable, and it freezes for about 10 seconds. I went to run and typed in services.msc. I try to enable Windows Media Network Sharing Service and click Automatic and start but get "error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start". I then set SSDP Discovery Service to Automatic and it is running. I then go to Universal Plug and Play Device host, and attempt to do the same, but when I click start I get "error 126: The specified module could not be found". l

A:Windows Media Sharing WILL NOT WORK!!!

Go to the Windows Media Network Sharing Service, right click and go to Properties. Go to the Dependencies tab and look at the services listed. Check and ensure all of these are running and set to automatic, which it sounds like you may have already done.

If you have, check out this link, see if you can make anything of it:

Let me know how it turns out.

I'm trying to share my music/video/pictures library over my wireless network, but the only thing that I can see on the remote units is whatever is in the recently added "playlist".

Everything seems normal when opening the library on the "server". If i look in the Network sharing center, the library can be seen from all remote computers. All music shared is mixed between external and internal hard drives

It seems like nothing else than recently added files under the Music folder can be shared.

Has anyone seen anything similar

I'm trying to use Windows Media Player 11 to stream video to my Xbox 360 console. However, wenever I try to enable media sharing (from [Tools] > [Options] > [Library] > [Configure Sharing]) by checking the "Share my Media" option and clicking OK - the OK buttons greys out as if it's doing something, then comes back again and nothing happens.

I'm pretty sure it's not a firewall nor network issue. It should display a window with other devices on the network, but it isn't.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Your help is much appreciated

I have an Xtreamer media player which is connected to the my home network. Previously, I share my folders in order to stream the media from my Win7 Ult PC to my Xtreamer.

Unfortunately this is not working anymore. I tried to do many tweaks in my network but with no use. What is confusing me is that I am able to access the shared folder in the PC using my Win7 Ult laptop. Moreover, I can access the shared folders in the laptop from Xtreamer. Also, i can access Xtreamer from my PC using FTP. So there must be a problem with the way my folders are shared, assuming Xtreamer is running Linux.

I tried to disable my firewall (Comodo and Win Firewall) and Avast antivirus but with no use. I have rested and restarted both my PC, Xtreamer, and even the router.

Anyone have suggestions?

Thanx all.

I'm having a problem trying to share media between my PC and xbox 360.

In Windows Media Player 11, when I go to [Tools] > [Options] > [Library] > [Configure Sharing], check "share my media" and click OK - the OK button greys out for a while then comes back, and nothing else happens.

I'm supposed to get a list of machines in my network, but it isn't showing anything. There aren't even any errors.

Any idea on how to solve this?

The biggest new thing to media heads which Mac users have been enjoying as a standard for a while is the ability to stream songs videos or control playlists and libraries over a localized network I've been waiting for this and I've been reluctant to buy alternatives like wireless speakers and whatnot because I think all the essential elements are in place and theres no need to spend any money on Solutions Media Alternatives Sharing & equipment I already have This scenario is very typical you're sitting at home in your flat or in your room you got - friends over and all or almost all of them have Media Sharing Alternatives & Solutions got some sort of computer beneath their fingertips They have music videos pictures Media Sharing Alternatives & Solutions even programs they want to exhibit for some reason I don't know about you but I'm sick of playing Media Sharing Alternatives & Solutions DJ to the wim of everyone i have visiting because my playlist is never enough So i want them to do it them selves without us having to change places on a frequent basis So I see a few solutions Using Windows 's built in Media Sharing which allows you to either stream media or play songs directly on a remote computer and it is compatible with Windows Media Player and even Foobar Beta You can use VLC to stream videos and music and you can also use playlists Foobar 's UPNP component which allows you to stream music from one computer to another or control whats playing on the other computer Foobar 's HTTPD component which allows you to control the playlist via a HTTPD interface Use Windows Network to play files from one computer to another BUT None of these solutions are what I want Consider Flash music videos Spotify Grooveshark and a ton of other media distribution applications that still makes me have to play DJ This will not do So I'm looking for something a little special not sure if it even exists but a network driver that allows sound output from the Windows mixer to be streamed from one computer to another or to a quot server quot This way I people could play whatever they wanted without me having to switch between my work laptop and my crappy stationary quot media center quot Sorry for the long post P and thanks for your thoughts

You might try setting up a Windows Home Server computer. That allows you to stream music from there I think, but I don't know how that would work for your suggestion.

A:Media Streaming and Sharing in Windows 8

The following link explains how sharing works in Windows 8, I would read the part about how to un-share folders since the Users folders are shared out by default so you would need to un-share or use the 'Share With' Nobody option for each folder. Basically the opposite of how it was with Windows 7.

shared by default??

Hi I recently purchased an Xbox I would like to use it to access my media on my wireless laptop using the media sharing function and also media Wireless Sharing Xbox Media with 360 center I have been able to connect to it with the Xbox only when the laptop is hardwired to the network The Xbox does not see the laptop when the laptop is wireless The strange thing is that I have a desktop with a wireless connection to Wireless Media Sharing with Xbox 360 the network and the Xbox sees it fine The Xbox is behind another router that connects to the main router I have made sure that the secondary router s DHCP server is off and that all devices receive DHCP via the main router I m not sure if this is a problem in the network or if this is a typical Vista problem I m leaning towards it being a problem with the laptop as I ve tested wireless connections to the Xbox with other devices and all seem to work fine For now I don t mind hardwiring the laptop to the network to access my media files via Xbox but it would be nice to be able to get the laptop to share its media wirelessly Thanks Here is a general map of my network if it helps http picasaweb google com lh photo dpgGELkezYNkKqY VnDFQ authkey r fz MbnmrE amp feat directlink nbsp

I was wondering if someone could help me with "Media sharing" between XP and
Vista. I can play media from the XP machine on the Vista machine, but not the other way around. I have tested to connect a another Vista and from that one I can play media and see the first Vista machine.
Is there a limitation here or have I done something wrong?

*in the vista WMP setting->Media Sharing dialog box-> icannot see my XP .

I have a Core 2 Duo PC running XP Home and Vista Ultimate on two separate bootable drives. In addition I have a laptop running XP Home. All systems have WM Player 11 installed. Vista and XP systems separately network well with the laptop.

When media sharing I can see the vista machine in laptop list but not the other way around. Media sharing with the PS3 works well with both XP machines. However, when running vista I am not able to share as the PS3 does not show in the media player sharing list. I am sure it has nothing to do with my netgear DG834gt router because the settings are the same for both XP & Vista. It seems to me that Vista has some quirky security feature that prevents the PS3 from connecting.

Anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it.
