Exchange Server Admin - Nervous

Q: Exchange Server Admin - Nervous

We currently have an email forwarding service to our Exchange Server. They handle the spam/virus et al protection before it hits our server. We're looking to consolidate all our connection services/web hosting etc.
My question: Is there anything we need to consider in terms of managing our email in-house via basic DNS forwarding vs a managed service? Is it a complicated process if we already have SBS 2003? Am I freaking out unnecessarily?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Setting up Pix 515E in front of ISA Server 2004 and Exchange Server 2003

Here, I scrapped your config. NAT bad/static bad/conduit bad/access-list bad.

no fixup protocol smtp
nameif int xxx outside security 0
nameif int xxx inside security 100
nameif int xxx dmz security 80
icmp permit any outside echo-reply
icmp permit any outside unreachable
icmp permit any inside
icmp permit any dmz
global (outside) 1 int
nat (inside) 1 32768 16483
route outside 1
static (inside,dmz)
static (dmz, outside) netmask << Can't have same IP as interface**
access-list internet permit tcp any host eq 80
access-list internet permit tcp any host eq 443
access-list internet permit tcp any host eq 25
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq echo
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq echo-reply
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq unreachable
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq source-quench
access-group internet in interface outside
access-list dmz permit ip host any << *Read note 1
access-group dmz in interface dmz
access-list inside permit ip any any
access-group inside in interface inside

The above config will nat to You can't static NAT an entire IP to the same as a global (your interface). You can only do this if you NAT specific ports.

The above config will allow internet to reach via TCP 80/443/25. I can only assume you're using ISA for EFE server, and maybe proxy. (Not an ISA fan)

The above config allows your ISA server carte-blanche access. In essence, it's a DMZ by name only. Don't fool yourself.

Don't use conduits, they're deprecated.

Don't use a firewall to permit "any" to your ISA server, actually use it to block inbound ports.

Also, your ISA server shouldn't/can't have two NIC's in the same subnet. That's a bad idea on 10 different levels. IF you're using your ISA server (blech) as EFE / reverse proxy for OWA, and outbound proxy - you might as well keep it on the same subnet as your Exchange server (inside, I'm assuming.) Again, 10 different reasons why it's a flawed security plan.

If this is simply an EFE server or reverse proxy, make sure you don't keep the ISA server part of any AD domain, stick it in the DMZ, and restrict what hosts it's allowed to see on the network that you're trying to protect.

Hello everyone:

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this or not but I thought I would try.

We have an Exchange server running Windows Server 2000 and we Blackberry Enterprise Server running on a seperate server. We are getting ready to upgrade our Exchange server to Windows Server 2003 and have run into a snag with a test user we created. We created the new account on our old server and then moved the users mailbox to the new exchange server. When we did that the BES recognizes that the user has moved servers but it doesn't send or recieve messages to the handheld.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

A:Non Admin not able to connect OPC server in Windows Server 2003

From what I've read on this thread, you'll need to set computer-wide DCOM security permissions. You'll want to peruse that thread.

On another note, this isn't really the best spot for this question. An error message isn't a crash, hang or bsod, and the situation is more relevant to specifically the Windows Server section (even though OPC servers can and often do exist in many client versions of Windows). You'll be able to receive more help there, as it's pertinent to your needs.

We are looking at bringing in a new server that will run windows NT 2000. The current server is running windows NT 4.0. Can we transfer the exchange server and information for Outlook over to the new server. What is the best option for the Exchange Server?

A recent cumulative update for Exchange 2016 was intended to add support for Windows Server 2016. But, after numerous reported issues, Microsoft has acknowledged a problem exists.

According to the release notes?

If you attempt to run Microsoft Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016, you will experience errors in the IIS host process W3WP.exe. There is no workaround at this time. You should postpone deployment of Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016 until a supported fix is available.

Once again, Microsoft?s testing of its own patches seems to have taken a backseat to accelerated release deadlines.

Now that we have NT and Exchange installed, we need to know how to move our calendars in Outlook to the Server computer. Any help would be great! Thank you!

Do you have the users now connected to Exchange? If so, you should be able to open the local PST files containing the local calendars then drag the local calendars to a public folder (which would be on the Exchange Server).

LoL Anyways I am thinking of building the server myself and have built my own server. I used SBS 2003 standard. They also want to implement Outlook business contacts manager. I think their business will quickly need more licenses for the server. Do you have any hardware suggestions and and pricing guildlines to quote them with? Do they need winxp pro on all the desktops? They mostly would like to use outlooks exchange and calendar features. I would want there to be a mirrored raid but am unsure how big the hard drives should be. I have done fine with two 80 gig hard drives. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Most obvious way would be to check what is running on the server, otherwise check your settings in outlook and see if you receive/send mail from pop3/smtp or if Exchange Server is listed.

A:Exchange server for home use: help?

First, go to Dell and download ALL the available drivers for that model Service Tag. They also have pretty decent setup instructions.
This system is not all that different from what you are used to... so do not be intimidated with it because it is "new" to you. Simply start out slowly, and become comfortable with how it works... add and remove as needed, but slowly. Don't add the second NIC until you know why it is needed.
The noise is caused by a high speed, rugged power supply that is designed to run 24 hours without interruption. You can replace that power supply with a quieter model that will work just as well, but may not have the 3-year long life of the current one. But yes, it is often useful to have another terminal at your desk IF you can control the dust and heat in the garage.
You will likely need more instruction than can be posted here, but there are plenty of good ideas available with a Google search.
Your thinking on this project is very good, however.
One thing I would do is call Dell support, and ask them to send you a copy of the install disk that came with that model. It will have the latest service packs. But all other drivers will only be available via download.

My company is running Exchange server 5.5 and it seems that whenever our employees try to email specific customers, the message either fails completely or they get partial messages. I talked with the Network admin at the customers company and they say that it is only with us that this issue occurs. We have only 3 customers that this happens to and the rest work fine. Our exchange server is pretty much all defaults and they seem to be universal values, nothing fancy. Any suggestions?

A:Exchange server issues!

What do the addresses that fail have in common? Are they web mail cusomers, do they use Lotus Notes or CC Mail? I would check you Internet Mail Connector and see if it is set up correctly and also find out if Exchange is using the least cost route to send mail. We had a problem where the mail was taking too many hops before it's final destination and the mail would never reach the intended mail server. If you are using DNS to route mail make sure the remote host is registered on the DNS server or it will not go out.

Not sure if I should post this here or in the XP forum, but here goes...

In attempting to fix an issue I had with OREANS32.SYS in my c:\windows\system32\drivers folder on a Win2K3 server, I renamed the file, then created a new 0-byte text file called OREANS32.SYS in the same directory.

Adjusted the pagefile to move it to the D: drive, (which is faster), and upon reboot, I can login to the server, map drives, view an internal website that is hosted on this server, but I can no longer RDP into the server, or open Outlook on my local machine (which connects to this server for Exchange mail).

I have gone back and undone my OREANS32.SYS changes, rebooted, but still getting the same issues.

Any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

A:Can't access exchange server or RDP

OREANS32.SYS on google comes back as an infection, could be one of many... I assume you've already followed this route? If you have an infection, renaming the file isn't going fix the problem...

I'm making the assumption that you're running 2003 SBS if you have everything in one. Are you running enterprise antivirus for your exchange or just a client covering the pc? What errors are in your logs? Can any machines connect to the exchange server?

Check your services, are all necessary exchange services running?

As far as I know, you install the Proxy Client on the Exchange server. Then, when your Internet Connector attempts to make a connection to the internet, it will go through the proxy server.

I'm hoping someone can answer or comment on this:

If I said our (Netgear) ADSL Router 'forwards' (IP Port Forwarding) our email to the Exchange Server's IP address, would that make sence?

What would happen if we then ditched the ADSL Router? We're moving into a new office which has the Internet already set up for us to use.

A:Exchange 2000 server

Are you using AD? Is there a trust between the two domains? Do both email servers live in the same domain? What prompted setting up a second email server strickly for one company's email?

Ultimately, what are you trying to do with your email? I don't think a second server is required for what you need (if my assumptions are correct)....

I'm moving an mailbox from a Microsoft 2000 server using Microsoft Exchange 5.5. to another server with the same versions. I moved almost everyone except for a few that are still on the old server. One problem I had was with this one user who is on our VPN and trying to set up his OUtlook. It says that the server is not accessible. This happened to th other users I set up before when Outlook was open while the mailbox was being moved. I would just update and refresh the Exchange Manager and Outlook on the client would be ok. For some reason, I think OUtlook is still looking for the old server instead of the new one that's why it can't connect. I'm trying to move it back to the old server now then back to the new one. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a customer who wants to go Mac based and use a Hosted Exchange platform for email. (Fasthosts)
I have set this up on PC based networks no bother but I gather there are some issue with doing this Mac based.
His current set up is all PC. MS Office etc.  I appreciate one is Apple and One is Microsoft but information as to the issues / pitfalls is patchy.
Just wondered if anyone had done it and what their experience was.
Thanks in advance.

A:Hosted Exchange Server and Mac

What kind of email client will they be using on the Mac? If the hosted Exchange offers Outlook Web Access, they can access their email from a browser and there shouldn't be any issues.
There are Mac versions of Outlook as well, which will probably work better with Exchange than the native Apple Mail application, although that should work as well.
If they're going to use some other client like Thunderbird, then make sure the hosted Exchange has IMAP and/or POP enabled -- on Exchange, those aren't by default. They'll also need to install an add-on if they want to use all the Exchange features that aren't available in IMAP or POP.

The office is running Windows 2000 server and MS Exchange server with approx. 6 machines connected. When anybody in the office e-mails, the recipient is getting a different looking e-mail address than the one it is coming from. For example, if [email protected] sends an e-mail the recipient sees the e-mail coming from [email protected]. When the recipient tries to reply to the e-mail they get a "non-deliverable" message. What could be the cause of this and why would it be happening to everybody in the office at the same time? Thanks.

It will eventually allow them to connect to the exchange server it is just cumbersome to have to open Outlook 3-5, sometimes 7 times before it will connect to exchange. The DHCP and DNS are working fine, there are no errors reported about them in the event log, but I can't seem to resolve this issue. This just started happening after the VPN server was setup. A:{Solved} - Exchange Server

Normally when you set up a new user on exchange and log onto a machine you will have two error messages

"Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft exchange server your system administrator if this condition persist"

and then

"the Action could not be completed"

If you go into the control panel and open "mail/Mail & fax" and then "properties"
and enter the correct name for the server & mailbox and then hit the "check name" box it should underline the user, you should then be able to access the mail.

I hope this is what you needed!

I have found 1 or 2 that can do it but if you could find some free versions or for a price what would be great.
It will be a big task to do it because they have over 16 GB of exchange and rising fast!!!

Any help would be great thanks Jason

A:Exchange Server Back-up

You really aren't going to find any that are FREE and do a good job of backing up individual mailboxes and databases while they are live. You need to ask yourself how much this email is worth to you and what would the effect be on you if they were suddenly gone and unrecoverable. If the answer is "they are worth nothing" then you can use the built in ntbackup utility to back it up. It the answer is "I would be devestated" you need to spend the money to get something like Veritas, BrightStor or other with Exchange connectors. 16GB is a lot of data to lose.

You will probably have to contact your domain host or ISP, whomever provides either the server space or bandwidth. If you own your own server, then you need to contact your ISP. Server hosts and ISPs all differ from one another on how mailer daemons and programs actually process the routing of email messages.

Sure wish I could help you farther, sorry

I suppose you have to start with reading up on spam protection and SMTP protocol in general.

Then set up:
Spam filtering software (bayesian filters)
SMTP sanity checks (address checks etc)
RBLs (block access from DSL accounts etc)
greylisting (temporarily block unknown senders)

If you're referring to Microsoft Exchange, that's a *very* expensive and complex package that runs only on server OS's like WS2008.

You're better off just setting Outlook to check for mail on a regular schedule.

Otherwise you're looking at setting up your own mail server. There are packages out there. Try looking up open source mail servers for Windows and it brings up quite a list.
