EEPROM, BIOS & firmware

Q: EEPROM, BIOS & firmware

Hi all,

EEPROM is a hardware piece that the BIOS (which is a code) is inside it. What about some piece named firmware? Is there any independent device named firmware in PC? If so, what does it do?

Preferred Solution: EEPROM, BIOS & firmware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A firmware is a structure code, embedded and instructed written languages that is designed by programmer to communicate with devices attached to the particular device. Most especially of our input devices has firmware inside talk of mouse, keyboard, flash drive e.t.c

Firmware is more generic name for the code within the EEPROM.

I have located the 24 C02 eeprom on my Inspiron 8100 MB and have used the paperclip method of shorting as described by many sources - no battery, power cord attached but power "off" until jumper attached to appropriate leads, then power "on" and F2 to get into setup when screen changes from boot screen but nothing has worked to clear the password. At this point I am ready to replace the eeprom but do not know enough about the chip to know what specifically to purchase and where. Can anyone help?
Thanks,

A:EEPROM BIOS Reset Using Jumper Method

with the modern provisions for password removal and BIOS resets, there is rarely a need to replace the BIOS chip. furthermore, few, if any, motherboards have a removable EEPROM unit.

when resetting the CMOS or clearing a password, always refer to the manual (available via support.dell.com) because there is not formal standard for how the BIOS must be reset, every manufacturer defines their own procedure.

dell units i have worked on in the past have required the cmos jumper to be moved to pins 2-3 and the system booted. upon power-on, the system displayed a menu that allowed me to reset the password. i cannot assure you that this is the correct procedure for your particular system, i am just using it as an example.

Greetings,

Computer- Dell Inspiron 8100
Problem- Admin Bios Password

I have tried numoerous things, and in the end seems eeprom is only way to reset this.

I looked and looked, it says under motherboard, yet I never found a "24OC" 4 legged chip on the board to reset.

This cpu is 7 yrs old.

So far no luck fixing this one or my Toshiba and have both been reduced to eeprom reset as only viable option.

I have a Dell Latitude D630. It has an admin password for the bios. Nothing is locked except for the settings. I can't change any of the settings in the bios. It lets me boot to windows just fine though. My question is, since I don't know that admin password for the bios, if I upgrade the bios firmware, will the admin password be deleted? Since I'm flashing the bios, I would think that all the settings will be lost. Is that the case?

A:Will upgrading the bios firmware on a Latitude D630 delete the bios admin password?

What?

Didn't you reply here, and say it worked (after the unusual 9th try ) http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic109612-109.html#post747024

Awfully strange!

A bios update can't remove passwords. As You Must Know

Oh and thanks for the extended long Title. I'm thinking this Topic of yours would be best removed? What do you think?

Hi There,

I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.

Any ideas? I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.

Thank you so much.

I upgraded the firmware of my Gateway M200ARC's Samsung SN-324F CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo, and the BIOS no longer can see the combo drive. My old firmware version was U200, and the Samsungood Web site had version U205 available (U205) which is what I upgraded to. Used the Samsung firmware update utility from their site. Any help to fix my problem is appreciated. Had sent an email for help to Samsung on this.

If I used the wrong firmware, if there a way to fix it or roll back to the old versoin? Thanks.

A:BIOS Cannot See CD-RW/DVD-ROM After Firmware Upgrade

If a BIOS flash goes bad (and unfortunately a significant % do) then it is often the end for the drive, (or motherboard when the PC BIOS is being flashed).

The golden rule is never to flash a BIOS unless you are correcting a known hardware compatability issue. It isn't a recreational activity.

The problem is that if the failed flash prevents the drive from appearing on the IDE BUS, then it cannot be accessed to reflash it back to the original version.

Hello Everyone Before I share my recent experiences I would like to say I am not a Bleeping Computer Specialist and do not recommend trying this unless you are fully capable I have had computers in my shop with rootkit activity detected by combofix This is after the hard drive was low level formatted with LLF from HDDGuru and a clean load of windows Some Infection Bios, Firmware windows updates might need Bios, Firmware Infection to be installed before the combofix detection The computers were Dell Dimension - http www bleepingcomputer com forums topic html Gigabyte motherboard- Intel P Award Bios Asus motherboard- AMD Athlon X Pheonix Bios On the first two I was able to clear the rootkit detection by -unplug the machine -Take out the CMOS Battery Push power button to clear capacitors -Remove harddrive -Install battery and plug machine in -Flash the bios with a floppy windows flash did not clear detection -LLF harddrive on other machine Remember to reboot after LLF I use the Apricorn DriveWire unplugged from usb on boot -Return harddrive to computer and Load windows from trusted disk The rootkit detection has not returned on these computers On the Asus after performing the above tasks Combofix still detects a rootkit and wants to reboot After clicking OK The combofix window and all icons disappear The mouse is still able to move but after minutes the computer still does not reboot I power it down and reboot Combofix runs but seems to detect nothing Could Combofix have a false Detection Any other experiences

A:Bios, Firmware Infection

Could Combofix have a false Detection?False detections are possible with any security tool to include ComboFix and that is one reason using it without proper supervision or guidance is not recommended. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, possible false detections, problems running ComboFix or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment. Further, using ComboFix is only one part of the disinfection process. Preliminary scans from other tools like DDS, RSIT and GMER should be used first because they provide comprehensive logs with specific details about files, folders and registry keys which may have been modified by malware infection. Analysis of those logs allows planning an strategy for effective disinfection and a determination if using ComboFix is necessary. Please read the pinned topic ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here.

1) can you reload the bios again correctly
2) There may be a jumper on the motherboard to reset the bios
3) Remove the motherboard cmos battery and wait a few minutes - then refit

A:Recover Corrupted BIOS Firmware

I wanted to add that I've downloaded the BIOS install file from Dell's website for the 660s.  The filename is named "Inspiron 660s Vostro 270s A11 BIOS.exe".
I've read online that I may need to extract the rom or header file from this executable file but I've been unsuccessful in doing that.  The example I've seen say to run the executable file from the command line with the /writeromfile or /writehdrfile flags.
When I try this nothing happens except that I receive an error message stating this is not a DELL computer (I'm running the executable file from my HP laptop).

I want to updgrade from Win 7 to Win 10.I'm advised it's prudent to upgrade the BIOS/Firmware before doing so.I tried using MEInfoWin but all I got were error codes. Further investigation in the bios shows ME Firmware Version and ME Management Mode as being Disabled. How do I re-enable them?I assume I need to move a jumper on the motherboard (PCB Rev 1:03)?Is it the one adjacent to CPU0-DIMM1 and what is the procedure?Any advice gratefully recieved.

A:Z820 ME Firmware & Management is Disabled in BIOS

Try this to upgrade the ME firmware on a Z820: As you noticed, there is a 3 pin header E1 located near the edge of the motherboard, between CPU0-DIMM1 and the power connector P3.    - Power down the Z820 first.  Then move the jumper on E1 to pins 1 and 2.  (pin 3 is closest to the CPU DIMM connector)  The jumper on pins 1-2 enables flashing the ME firmware.    - After moving the jumper, then power up the system.  Note:  The system only reads the position of this jumper on power up (maybe reset?), so don't move it while the system is running.    - Now try to flash the ME firmware.    - If the ME flash worked, then power down the system.  Move the jumper on E1 to pins 2 and 3.  This enables ME.  (Note:  ME is disabled with the jumper on pins 1-2)      - After powering up the system after flashing and moving the jumper, the system may power down and up and reboot a few times.  This is normal.  I am not an expert on ME firmware, but I am fairly certain this will help.  E1 is highlighted in yellow below, pin 1 is on the left.

A:Z820 Bricked Bios after Firmware update

Hi: If you run the BIOS file again (on another PC), the intruction page opens and you can try this...I'd burn the DOS based flash files on a CD, since the DVD drive may be looking for a CD to recover from, but according to the instructions below, you can use a USB flash drive (formatted in the FTA 32 files system, not NTFS). Just put the files inside the folder on the CD, not the folder. Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery ModeHP Workstations include 64 KB of write-protected boot block ROM that provides a way to recover from a failed update of the system BIOS ROM, for instance in the event of a power loss.  Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery Mode will detect that the BIOS is unusable and boot the workstation in a recovery mode and search the root folder of any FAT/FAT32 file system on any USB media source (hard drive, flash drive, etc.) for a compatible binary image. The binary (.bin) file in the DOS Flash folder should be copied to the root of the desired storage device, and the system powered on. Once the binary image is located, the BIOS recovery process will be attempted. The automatic recovery will continue until the BIOS is successfully updated or restored.

In my upgrading frenzy, I went ahead and updated my new work-provided laptop's BIOS (Dell E7240). Lo and behold Bitlocker is now asking for a recovery key.
As the IT Administrator won't be available till next week and I am in urgent need to access it.

My question is simple; does downgrading the BIOS back reverse the lock?

Thanks!

here's a zip file of the gmer file unless you can't use that for security purposes or don't want me to do that first. I have been trying to post the gmer log file with no success, it times out and I get nowhere. I also may have had an application running, didn't close the comodo consul but did turn off active protection.

Black screen with message "system BIOS firmware is being updated." Then after several minutes "clearing pending image" and not to disconnect, "block 156/156 progress 100%." I left it for hours and it never changed. I have completed the hard reset by removing battery and draining, but did not change. It does not respond to any resets or reboots I've tried. Completely inoperable.

Read the entire referenced webpage below. Apparently, the problem is in the BIOS or HDD firmware, and also affects Windows and Mac platforms (especially laptops) as well as Linux despite the problem being reported against Fiesty and Gutsy Ubuntu:

Article Explanation of Ubuntu Hard Drive Wear and Tear.

Ubuntu doesn't touch your hard drive power management settings by default. In almost all cases, it's more likely to be your BIOS or the firmware on your hard drive.

There are two fixes documented: choose wisely after reading the entire article as there is a trade-off between laptop battery life vs HDD life. I would choose in favor of the solution that extends the HDD life at the expense of battery life. Just my $0.02 worth of advice.

I'm looking for a Windows API call (or some other "programatic method) to reboot PC into the firmware (BIOS/UEFI) setup/configuration screen.
I'm writing an installer application (in c++), and as part of that application, I would like to reboot the PC firmware (BIOS/UEFI) setup/configuration screen.
Anyone know anything that might work, or any place I could look for this information???
NOTE: Windows 10 has a UI that does this, and I have seen it done from other installers, so I know it's possible.

I ran into an issue recently with Dell E with I U CPU and dedicated graphics card The entire system stops responding randomly and gets worse after some time The fix I found was to update the Bios firmware from dells drivers website Released Jan th When attempting to upgrade the bios of the processes will fail A second update to the bios firmware will complete one of the steps needed to update all areas of the bios So update the bios twice back to back After this attempt to boot into windows It will likely still E5570 Firmware Windows Booting issues, Bios Dell Crashes, not work What I found was to shut down unplug the power cord then wait seconds then plug back in This should restore the OS to working condition This happened to Dell E5570 Booting issues, Windows Crashes, Bios Firmware me on brand new machines I attached some pictures that will show the weird issues that were occurring If you have similar issues then its likely the bios You will need another machine to download the bios exe file onto Dell E5570 Booting issues, Windows Crashes, Bios Firmware a flash drive Insert flash drive then when you boot up the computer and see the dell logo push delete a few times until you see the text on the upper right then push f several times until you get in Then go to bios firmware update Select browse then click on the bios exe file you downloaded Takes a few minutes to install the firmware that will fail to complete the first time DO NOT SHUT OFF THE COMPUTER DURING BIOS UPDATE PROCESS Btw these machines were only a few hours old when this started Track pad would not respond properly random windows freezing SSD would not load OS random firmware update failure with no attempt to update Dell E5570 Booting issues, Windows Crashes, Bios Firmware the firmware screen turning purple flickering screen etc Good luck

Hello.I successfully updated the BIOS and BMC Firmware for our C6220 server. However now when boot, it keeps sitting at screen "Configuring Memory... Done" for at least 3-5 minutes before moving on to the boots detection, then there's a message states BMC version: FF.FF (instead of displaying the actual version)I could not able to access the server via IMPI and found BIOS settings menu does not see BMC (message... BMC: Not Found). I suspect the either the BMC version 2.53 or BIOS version 2.5.3 or both on the support site is corrupted.www.dell.com/.../drivers

I am trying to coble together two non-working Zen Xtras into a working one. I receive a message: "Firmware Problem," and am instructed to reload the firmware. When I attempt to do so, the firware does not recognize the device although the device shows up in My Computer as a Zen Xtra. I have reloaded the drivers. When I attempt to reinstall the firmware, it states that it cannot detect the device and please connect it now. How do I resolve this lack of recognition?

A:Dell WD15 Desktop Dock - Step-by-step driver/firmware/BIOS installation instructions for XPS, Latitude and Precision notebooks [UPDATED 04-22-16]

Hi Brian
Thanks for being active on this issue. (This thread was closed - so had to use the TB-15 Thunderbolt thread above this one). Thanks for opening this one for WD-15
I've been having  most of the problems mentioned in the other Thunderbolt dock  thread .. USB problems, fan noise, not recognising on startup,
I tried the driver list above (for 5510 win7 64) and some refused to install because they were for xps product not  precision. However I when on 5520 support page (for the nth time) and found a new USB driver. ie > Chipset_Driver_V2WY5_WN32_1.16.32.1_A01.EXE
I've installed that but NOPE ... still has USB problems eg stuff like usb (2) keyboard not working. BUT unplug/replug the dock at USB C connection at laptop and it works !! (but this is a PITA and probably will wreck the socket in the long run).
I guess my point is please sync the support page and this support forum if you can, we all love Dell but would appreciate some reciprocating :-)

A:Dell TB15 Desktop Dock - Step-by-step driver/firmware/BIOS installation instructions for XPS, Latitude and Precision notebooks [UPDATED 04-22-16]

Unfortunately I see no updates to firmware or drivers from what I already have for the TB15 and my XPS 15 9550. I have experienced issues with the Realtek USB GBE Ethernet Controller Driver (generating BSOD's) and the mini-Displayport connection from the TB15 to an external monitor (screen blanks out). Time is running out for me. I will be forced to return my TB15 this week.

If I run a Strong Magnet over a EEprom chip (NOT EPROM) will it erase it?? Or can it be only erased with a electrical field??

Any info would be wonderful

Thanx,

A:Can I Erase a EEPROM like this??

You can't erase EEPROMs with a magnet. I imagine a very powerful and rapidly changing electromagnetic field could fry the chip but it'd be easier to use a hammer in that case.

Anything yet with this stupid bug of Audigy ???

I hope they don't repeat the same bug under Audigy 2....

Found that EEPROM re-programmed under some Compaq models... (no compaq access for me)

Creative still persists that this happens only for Abit motherboards...
Mine is Soltek so i don't have this bug, although
ALL OTHER INDICATIONS ARE THE SAME

i hope that Creative would realise that there is something wrong with their Audigy than keep saying that is Motherboard's fault....

TIPS : install XP with DISABLE ACPI
(when install XP press F5 at the the very moment moment that blue screen comes up...press until new window shows. Then choose standard PC-no ACPI)
DO NO PLUG IN OLDER PCI CARD (like LAN) which are NON - ACPI

i hope that someone makes a flash programme so everyone can just flash EEPROM to programme it with the right values.

Im getting this error message on a new build and can't find anywhere in the BIOs to re-input the mac address.

Full spec is
ASUS A7S8X-MX
AMD Athlon XP 1800
Seagate 7200 80GB SATA
1gb Kingston 3200 memory
Phillips CD
Win XP Home
350 W PSU

The error message crops up when I reboot half way through the XP install so that the OS does not load.

I believe the mac address is on a label on the MOBO but I'm stuck on where to re-input the address within BIOS

Any clues would be very welcome

Hi all I have a dell latitude D800 with a bios password enabled. I'm not asking for the code based on my service tag number. All I want is to know if someone has successfully cleared the bios password using the paper clip method. I've spent a lot of time looking for a solution to this problem and it seems that dell is hiding these chips by hiding the under the hardware and by putting stickers on top of these chips. Although, I think I've found it. This is the only pic I?ve been able to find of the location that I think it?s the eeprom chip labeled 24c04. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope someone can help me with this cos its driving me nuts - I have an old compaq presario desktop with an Intel Pro 100 ethernet adapter. Started getting error message PXE-E05 -Lan adapter corrupted or cannot be initialised on booting up. I have trawled the internet for solutions - I updated the BIOS recently which didnt solve the problem, have tried removing the item in safe mode, I also tried PROBOOT recently using IBAUtil.exe and just when I thought I would be able to reflash I got the following error message in DOS when using IBAUtil - "Cannot read eeprom on NIC1" - have also tried changing boot order - have disabled network boot but don't know where to go next....can you suggest a solution.
Thanks

PS reloading XP doesn't solve the issue either.

My GF s Toshiba Laptop is having a very similiar problem She has had problems with it in the past with powering down so I believe this is why last night she got the BSOD with a x CA error I believe this is related to the PXE-E error This message is displayed if the NIC EEPROM contents have been corrupted This can happen if the system is reset or powered down when the NIC EEPROM is being reprogrammed If this message is displayed the PXE ROM will not boot Click to expand and the PXE-E error This message is displayed if any of the PCI BIOS calls made to read the PCI configuration space return an error code This should not happen with a production BIOS and properly operating hardware Click to expand that I received a couple of times Aswell as quot Operating system not found quot After disabling the LAN on the Boot Menu I managed to get XP to start I reboot enabled the LAN amp got XP back up again so I could find it in Device Manager have been contents NIC EEPROM corrupted Of course it had the yellow question mark but figured this was good as now maybe I could do something NIC EEPROM contents have been corrupted with it While playing around on my own computer searching for solutions I could clearly see the Device Manager on her Laptop refreshing every seconds or so amp losing the Intel R Pro PL Network Connection like it would just disappear then seconds later reappear Will this be hardware or software related I have downloaded another driver for the Intel Pro PL with no noticeable difference from the Toshiba website Unfortunately as NIC EEPROM contents have been corrupted she has no LAN adapter available she can not access the Net to download drivers directly so I am doing them via my PC I will try amp reinstall repair XP tonight when I get home to see if that makes any difference but does anyone else have any suggestions I should probably mention she still has the Net NIC EEPROM contents have been corrupted Adapter and the Wireless Driver available nbsp

Hello.

I have been reading the forums quite alot recently and discovered that if you short together two pins on the EEPROM chip you can reset the settings and clear passwords from the BIOS.

I have been trying this method for quite some time with all the combinations of pins i can find but none seem to work, I have found the right chip using this picture.

download.centre4service.com/Lat640540insp4150.jpg

So I hope this is the right chip. :S

Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly welcomed, I know that when I short the two pins and boot the PC the service tag on my 'dell', hiss boo, should be wiped but nothing changes.

I'am beginning to suspect there is another deeper chip that stores this info aswell, possibly called NVRAM as I have heard it bounced around the forums before.

Thanks in advance

hey out there , I have been reading this post for awhile to learn how to reset the bios password/fingerprint . I finaly figured out how to reset it on my TOSHIBA SATELLITE A205 S4639 . I have included to pictures to help illustrate my success. I would like some feedback from others out there to see if this trick works on your model. First, I removed the memory sticks ( both of them ) then I noticed there were two contacts in the upper left corner, they should have (XXX) next to them. I removed the battery and plugged in the power supply and shorted these two contacts together and turned on the laptop. I noticed it reset the passwords and let me get into the Wind0w$ [email protected] Goodluck on your ventures.

A:Forgot password stored on eeprom chip

It's your Dell and you spoke to Dell and they cant help? Something smells fishy here. How many come here and the first post is trying to crack a password. Replacing a password is not something done "By Accident". Sorry I sound harsh but most people looking to crack a password are doing it because most people protect their laptops with passwords so when it gets "misplaced" no one else can use it.

I am a tech working an many x230t 's under contract. Have sucessfully replaced motherboards and reset the System ID on several units with the maintanence Disk (ver 1.86) on USB. I just recieved a new batch of replacement system boards, and on this batch I am having dificuty. When I choose set system identification, get the EEPROM is write-protected warning. When I try rebooting with the escape key I get the same message. I saw on other posts that the BIOS has to be in diagnostic boot mode to unwrite-protect the EEPROM. I have tried this without success. Are there any other procedures with which I am not familar, that might help. Please let me know ASAP. I have many laptops to repair. Thanks in advance for your help

A:x320t EEPROM Write-protected when resetting ID

The only other thing is that I would make sure UEFI and rapid boot are not set in the BIOS.  (I don't have an x230t to look at right now, but I would guess you have those options.  Have the machine turned off. When you startup (cold boot), hit the ESC key a couple of times as soon as you see the Lenovo logo. If you did it at the right time, it will boot from the maintenance disk automatically, even if other devices are higher in priority (no need to hit F12).  Hit F9 to reload defaults when you are done.

Hi CodeB and welcome

This is a really stupid question, how do you expect anyone to send you a copy of an EEPROM and even if they did do you have the ability to write it to the chip.

Have you tried the DST software from my site.

Just download either the floppy or the CD and run the software, if that doesnt work post back and let us know what happened.

Details:

This is a Dell Vostro V13. I've sent this thing off to Dell twice, they reinstall Windows (which is mystifying.), it last a few weeks, crashes again. Now I'm, of course, out of the warranty window. What a coincidence.

The hard drive is not dead, and the monitor works. I can remove the HD, cable it to another computer, it spins up fine, all files intact, and the LCD appears perfectly normally in BIOS.

I don't know if this is in any way related, but in the interest of thoroughness, i'm always on the Net (firefox) when it crashes.

But then, I'm always on the Net...

A shiny new Porsche (matchbox :) for anyone who solves this mystery.

Thank you,

Hello all,

I am looking for Firmware for DI-614+ wireless router. When I use WEP encryption, no wireless client (laptop) can connect. I have also tried the latest firmware I can get from D-Link. I hoping to use this with my TFCko box or as my access point for my laptop.

If I cannot use it as wireless access point. Is there a firmware hack to make it a wireless client or a repeater?

Thanks for any ideas

Will this confuse the motherboard bios or Windows 7?

A:2 SSD's 2 Different firmware?

I don't think it will give any problems just because of firmwares. After all, it's entirely internal to each device. As long as each one has the proper drivers and the motherboard recognizes each one, they should work.

hi!

Can anyone tell me what is firmware?

A:what is a firmware?

Firmware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
In electronic systems and computing, firmware is a term often used to denote the fixed, usually rather small, programs and/or data structures that internally control various electronic devices. Typical examples of devices containing firmware range from end-user products such as remote controls or calculators, through computer parts and devices like hard disks, keyboards, TFT screens or memory cards, all the way to scientific instrumentation and industrial robotics. Also more complex consumer devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, synthesizers, etc., contain firmware to enable the device's basic operation as well as implementing higher-level functions.

I am fresh out of college, and seem to have found a job where I am in way over my head. My employer knows it though, and just expects me to try my best.... anyway heres the question, even though it seems dumb...
When using C, does a hexadecimal Number refer to the memory address (AKA a register or part of the the memory or a port), or does it simply refer to the number itself?

Eg:
ulData = ulMemPos + 0x20;
does this mean add the hexadecimal value of 20-- or to add twenty memory addressing to it?

A:Firmware?

Firmware is half software, half hardware. Usually it is software embedded permanently into a piece of hardware. Such as the software that runs a digital camera, or drives a USB networking cable.

Dvd disk drive won't run DVD's. Makes alot of clicking, spinning noises but wont read disks. Went to HKEY areas and changed some things recom by other forums. Didn't work. Told needed firmware upgrade. Unable to find firmware for Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A ATA Device because as near as I can find it's an OEM Device. Went back to Gateway(Notebook Manufacturer) and they don't have. Any suggestions? Ifu can't fix, I guess u install a new DVD Device or a new Notebook.
Was also told by Gateway I needed a Codec upgrade.

A:OEM DVD Firmware

The codec pack is easy enough- Techspot has what you need here http://www.techspot.com/downloads/775-klite-codec-pack-full.html
Install and then try running the discs.

How does the drive show up in the Device Manager ? No exclamation mark in a yellow triangle?
What DVD's won't it run-commercial (retail) movies, or discs you are attempting to burn ? If the latter, what brand of discs.

If it definitely requires a firmware update then it seem's you're out of luck as there are none as far as I can tell.

I went on to the Nero site which states they will not accept responsibility for any firmware updates.

Is there any way to do a firmware downgrade on a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Broadband router? Ever since I upgraded the firmware, I have been having all kinds of problems with my connections quitting. I have tried logging onto the router to downgrade to the original firmware but it fails every time. I am getting sick of unplugging the router and restarting the modem every time this happens. My connection to the internet won't even last a day before it quits! If it is not possible to downgrade is there ANY way to fix my problem without going out and buying a new router?

There should be a reset button on the back of the router. This will reset everything to default so you'll need to reconfigure everything.

After reading the thread by simonsiknasty about slower internet connection, I decided to upgrade the firmware on my TP-Link WR641G Router. I currently have v3 of the firmware and v4 was available on the official Site.

However, after several attempts I have been unsuccessful in upgrading it.
Here is the upgrade screen...

I click on the BROWSE button, select the latest firmware (wr641gv4-en-up.bin) and OKAY. It looks like it's trying to do something, but nothing ever happens! Tried this in both Firefox and IE8. In IE8 the progress bar moves slowly across to about a third of the way then stops.

Has anyone had any experience of this Router, as I'm stuck on this at the moment?

Any help would be appreciated.

THX.

A:TP-Link Firmware

My old router was a TP-Link. What a stupid choice I had made.
Well, this thing looks like it has the same firmware as my old router, only difference is I had no 11G, whatever that is. I updated its firmware only once. I didn't have this issue though... Try disabling any forwarded ports and turning off the wireless before the install. During the update does the router reset itself? Do the lights blink or anything? Does it show any indication of loading, processing etc. ?

I can get along without a manual, but since I don't see any firmware info on the model does that mean its firmware doesn't have to be updated?

Face it, CD/DVD/BLU-RAY all use firmware on their drives, digital cameras use it, USB uses it, video cards on computers use it; pretty much every different kind of hardware I can think of uses firmware.

Firmware is burned program code and data, so all hardware needs program code and data memory to execute.

Aside from programming for hardware directly, all hardware seems to have burned program code in one way or another.

Mice devices/point and click devices have firmware, keyboards, etc.

Is there any hardware that doesn't use firmware?

A:firmware upgrade?

I found this don't know if it will work:

RPC2 firmware where the number of "User Changes" and "Region Setting" snap back to the pre-flashing settings every time you cycle the power on the drive.

This effectively gives you an infinite number of region changes, without all the software BS required by an RPC1 firmware. For more info try Google, or a search on rpc1.org

Laptop is a Dell Vostro 1000 with XP Home SP3. Just installed a Crucial SSD. Works great. Tried to install a firmware update; not so great. Following the instructions from the Crucial site, I downloaded the update (it's an ISO file) and burned it to a CD. In the BIOS, changed boot order to CD drive first. Restarted the laptop. No joy - Windows still boots to the desktop. What could be wrong? I know almost nothing about using ISO files. TIA.

CD-image ISO files have to be written to CD in a special way, if you just copied the ISO file to a CD like a normal file, that won't work. There's a free app for creating a CD from an ISO file, it's called IMGBurn: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn/
