Preferred Solution: Error with Automatic Updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Error with Automatic Updates

The problem is every time I try to open anything that has to do with Automatic Updates, a window pops up saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application."Click to expand...

Try This link it will tell you what the problem is. this refers to the first error code.

I am getting an error installing an update for NetFramework 2.0. I already have 1.1 and the SP for 1.1 installed.

Is there a known problem with 2.0?

Since it is already downloaded on my PC, where can I find it to delete the update and then I'll run it again.

A:Error with Automatic Updates

Try uninstalling it and reinstalling it through win update.

If it's not listed in add or remove programs, then this suggestion is useless.

Whenever i have windows automatic updates turned on, svchost uses 50% CPU and loads of memory, to solve this, the only thing i have been able to figure out is to turn off auto updates, but im sure this is very unwise, especially since checking for updates manually doesnt seem to work. is there any way around this???
thanks

Hello everyone,

I apologize I am somewhat of a newbie to this troubleshooting. I am getting BSOD everytime I boot up the computer. It will say configuring windows then crash to BSOD and say dumping physical memory. Code error is 0x000000d1. It says that Ndis.sys is involved. Top of the BSOD it says Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or something. it just continues this cycle of trying to boot up followed by crashing.

I can boot up in safe mode, but not safe mode with networking. So I'm not sure how to download the latest drivers without an internet connection.

I am running Windows 7 service pack 1 on a Dell inspiron 546.
I have tried booting in safe mode and running msconfig to only boot up microsoft programs, and i've disabled Mcafee security and firewall.

Please help!

Welcome to SevenForums.

Please uninstall McAfee, it's a frequent cause of BSOD-s. Use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. (TO TEST)McAfee Removal Tool - McAfee Uninstaller
Recommended antivirus program for Windows 7 based on stability compared to others:-
Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows
Malwarebytes - The Free version
Good and Free system security combination.
Do not start the free trial of Malware Bytes; remember to deselect that option when prompted.

Run a full scan with both (separately) once downloaded, installed and updated.

A:Does disabling automatic Win Updates include automatic Device Driver?

Hello MM,

That will stop drivers from automatically being installed in Windows Update, but won't stop drivers from being available in Windows Update.

If you don't want drivers to be available in Windows Update, then you can disable this using the tutorial below. If disabled, you'll have to manually update (download and install) your drivers from the manufacturer.

Driver Updates in Windows Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 10driver-updates-windows-update-enable-disable-windows-10-a.html

The first tutorial below you posted will turn on/off automatic installation of drivers for devices. However, I would recommend to also disable automatic updates in the second tutorial below to be safe.

I was in the middle of something important tonight before I passed out on the couch. I woke up and my computer restarted without saving

A:Automatic Updates & Stopping Automatic Restarts

Just go into the Windows update control panel and turn off Automatic updates then set it so you control when the updates are installed which gives you the reboot option instead of doing it for you.

W=2000XP.IE6,, About 2 months ago, I { && many, many others } had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer. I am fairly computer experienced & don't know the best way to custom install a few updates, here & there, as are best for my system. What is the BEST way for me to keep the system safe , as far as updates go ??

I'm a system admin full of users that don't bother to install the windows patches and updates. Well I've setup the desktops to automatically check, download, and install the updates.

Does this only check at the time specified?

Does it only download critical updates? windows updates? drivers?

Does it prompt the user when it's downloading and installing? Does it force them to restart their machines?

A:windows automatic updates isn't so automatic

If you're talking about Auto Updates in XP, then you can specify an exact time for the updater to check and download and install the updates. RIGHT click My Computer/Auto Update Tab. Otherwise, depending on the internet connection, update looks only once a day I believe. ONLY critical updates are brought down, you must visit the site for driver and other updates.

Sorry if my post title is a little longwinded - but these three problems seem to be related. After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again - again. Thanks.

winXPsp2: I stopped seeing the windows automatic update icon appearing in my system tray even though anther system on my LAN has been getting updates.

I changed the automatic updates option from notify me to download but do not install and now when I shut down my computer it offers to install updates. Trouble is I don't want to install updates blindly - I want to pick and choose and that option is not available during shutdown.

Any idea what may be wrong or what to try? one possibility is that zonealarm or spysweeper may be getting in the way. what process should be running? Installing updates via the Windows update web page isn't an option since I refuse to install the Windows Genuine Advantage spyware.

I ignore the pop-up window from the notifications area telling me Windows updates are ready to install, I'm busy. Then I'm ready to do it, but there's no icon in the notification area to click to do the install.

I've even gone as far as to do a manual install, just to make sure I've got the latest update. I know I'm fully updated, and then the pop-up window comes up telling me it has that update ready to install again!

Is there a way to retrieve the updates Automatic Updates has ready to install? Reboot?!

Will manually updating confuse Automatic Updates?

I was having problems with Windows Update. The dialog box would just sit there and present no status as to how much was downloaded. Download progress would stay at 0%. I turned on automatic updates and I started getting old updates in the list, some of them years old. I'm sure I would have already installed these updates so I hid them from view. Just went to check for updates again and 2 other years old updates appear. I have since set updates back to notify me when available. Why are old updates showing up with recent updates? I never had this issue before. I never used automatic updates, I always did updates after notification only. Now, because I switched on automatic updates and then switched it off again, these old updates are showing up. Any suggestions?

A:Switching to automatic updates presents old updates?

MS doesn't usually offer updates if you have them already. Are you quite certain you have them? If you haven't then it is likely to offer them when you turn Auto Updates back on.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Does anyone have any clues as to what can cause this to happen? It NEVER USED TO HAPPEN and I don't knopw offhand what if anything has changed!!!

A:Automatic Updates

I have had problems with MS Updates when they were blocked by Norton's. You may want to try it with a disabled AV. Apart from that, as I recall there are two ways to find out the reason why an update failed to install.1) Using Internet Explorer, go to update.microsoft.com. On the left you should have an option for update history (or similar). Clicking on that will take you to a screen showing a list of updates. There should be a question mark for those that are failed, which you can click. This will give you a little more information.2) The longer, more involved (but more detailed) method is to go straight to the update log. Click Start, Run and type/paste %windir%\windowsupdate.log in the textbox. Its usually pretty hard to interpret unless you are used to it, but look for words like warning or error. For an official MS article on the issue, you can read it here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602Alot of this post is from memory, so if there are innacuracies my apologies.

Firstly, regarding my previous post, I seem to have resolved it by downloading and running a program called look2Me, not sure what it did but seems to have worked!

... Windows has just done its Automatic Updates thing and I now have a yellow shield in the system tray. I have tried a number of times now, to install the updates but it is unable to install them. the message just says:

Updates were unable to be successfully installed

The following updates were not installed:

Any help would be greatly appriciated,

I have windows XP. Every now and then, windows automatically updates itself; but I never gave it permission to do so. As a result of the updates, sometimes the computer must restart itself or even turn itself off. (It is the most annoying). These updates only take place when the computer is idle or on standby. I like to have my computer on at all times and I hate to find it "OFF" because of a silly update. I don't even know what is being updated. So, I guesss my questions are... Is there a way I can turn off the automatic updates? Is there a way to tell the computer to ask permission FIRST before restarting the computer and before updating? Also, how can I find out what windows is updating??? PLEASE HELP. THANX

Hello illtutmish

This is very often caused by an infection. Have your system checked for virus/trojans/worms

Please read ?HijackThis Log Help? follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum
Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.

A friend of mine called because his computer was freezing every few minutes. He was in the middle of an online exam, due the next day. He was tearing his hair out, ready to go purchase a new computer. Eventually I figured out that update 2823324 was the cause of his problem.

Seems to me this is completely unacceptable OS behavior. If MS can effectively destroy a computer through its own updates, how can we recommend that users leave the automatic update setting in place? Shouldn't the OS have the ability to recognize that it's creating the problem, and fix it internally?

was the auto update from WinUpdate?

and you can turn off certain updates by going to the winupdate site here
go there and you can opt for certain updates to be hidden the sites FAQ says:

Quote:

What happens if I select "Hide this update"?
Windows Update will no longer ask you to review or install that update. However, if you hide a high priority update, you might be reminded that you?re missing an update that is critical to the security of your computer.

If I hide an update, how do I get it back later?
On the Windows Update Web site, click Restore hidden updates, and then review and install the updates that you want.

I am trying to force the install of updates that have already been downloaded.

I updated some other software while windows was downloading it's updates. I have auto updates set to download only.
I am running XP pro SP2.

After updating the other software I had to restart. Windows had already notified me that the updates were ready before I restarted. After the restart, the update program did not start. I have tried restart the auto update service thinking that that would 'trick' the updates into starting. The only way I could make the updates start was by shutting down the computer and choosing the "install updates then shut down option". I know on my mac and my linux machines I can just start the update app but I haven't been able to find a similar option in XP.

It could be that the Windows Updates didn't install correctly.

Don't restart the computer, go to Start, click on run, and type services.msc, then click ok.

In th list, highlight Automatic Updates and click Stop the service. Minimize the services window.

Open My Computer, and go to C:\WINDOWS. Find the Software Distribution folder and delete it.

Bring the Services Window back up and click Start the service.

Reboot the PC, allow the updates to redownload/reinstall and see if that resolves the issue.

Hello.

Recently (a few weeks ago), a family member's computer that is used for work had svchost using up 100% of the CPU. Upon looking into svchost with Process Explorer, we found that it was Automatic Updates that was causing the problem. Disabling the service supressed the problem temporarily.

We later received an email for his company saying that many XP computers in the company were getting the same problem. They said to let the updates install, which resolved the problem.

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same problem. It's strange that it would be isolated to one company.

A:Automatic Updates Xp Pro Sp2

Here's what I'm thinking....

You have it set on Automatic updates, but there are no updates to download/install, so therefor it wouldn't do anything. The Automatic Updates are mainly files that are considered high priority for your system, which always get downloaded/installed if set to do so.

On the other hand, you can go to the web site and get downloads from there, but those aren't the critical files you need, just files/programs that you can use.

But, if you should go to MS web site and let it check your computer, it will list all of the files you need and it'll get them ready for you to download. If there are no critical files needed for your computer, then it'll say so, and at the same time, there will be nothing for your automatic updates to update.

That's my take on it. Maybe someone else can explain differently.

Also check to make sure that you don't have any firewalls or such blocking it from updating.

A:Automatic Updates

There are a couple of things you can do :

1. When an update is ready to be installed there is usually a "Yellow" sheild in the system tray. If you click on it a window will open giving you two options
One is the default setting labeled "Express" the other is labeled "Optional". If you put a tick in the optional radio button another window will open telling
you the name of the update and whether you want to install it or not.
2. You can change your security settings by clicking Start>Settings>Control Panel. Click on the Security Center Icon (Sheild). Click on Manage Automatic
Updates. You can change your settings there. Change it to "Notify me of updates" or something that you are comfortable with. That way you can decide
which ones you want to install and when you want to install them. You can also choose to turn them off all together but I don't recommend that unless you
are religious about checking for critical updates. (Really a moot point as I don't know if Microsoft is still writing critical updates to support XP).

Hi -I am not exactly sure of what you mean by The red shield in the bottom right. This can be an infection or updates are not turned on.This usually means that Updates are turned off. Change your settings to Download updates and let me choose when to install them.If this will not change anything then follow the Malware directions below. There may be something blocking them. Then try going to the Update site and Saving the update and installing them later. Also update and scan with your A/Virus and Firewall, or turn them off while you update, as this can block updates.Last resort is below -Thank You - Please repost in this area Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and follow the Directions Here Thank You -

Just recently I realized that my automatic updates for windows xp were turned off. I went to the security center to set it to automatic, and it said
"Were sorry. The security center could not change your automatic update settings." Then it said to go to control panel, systems, automatic updates tab and enable automatic updates. When I did that in control panel it showed up that I already have automatic updates enabled, before I even did anything. But even after I clicked apply it would not enable automatic updates. Is this some kind of virus?

Thanks for the help

Go to run and type in services.msc. Look for 'Automatic updates' and make sure the service is running

A:xp automatic updates

Are you not getting a little icon in the system tray after clicking OK? When you mouse over it the options are to pause or stop.
When it has finished the update is applied automatically, and if you want to check that it has gone through, look in add/remove programs to see what updates have been applied.

Are you not getting any of this happening?

every so often, my computer will pop up a box that has Automatic Updates in the title bar, and says something about updating my computer is almost complete, windows will restart in such amt of time, and will count down, to finish automatic updates with a status bar and has 2 buttons:
Restart Now
or
Restart later

how do i got about turning this off?...thanks!

A:automatic updates

You really should not turn off automatic updates, its keeps your computer protected.

If you have SP2 installed:
You can do this however, simply clic:
start
control panel
security center
You will see a title "Manage Security Settings For" and under it will be "Automatic updates" link, click that link
Choose any one of ther three buttons under "automatically update" and click apply.

If you turn them off, be sure to check periodically for updates by going to the windows update website.

okay, i was told some time ago that i shouldnt let microsoft tell me when when i should update my system, or let it do it automatically so ive never activated the automatic update...

now im wondering if i should turn it on and see whats available. im quite certain ive got SP2 on my xp pro set up. is there an SP 3?

A:automatic updates

Yes, there is an SP3 and IE7 and updates beyond those even. You do not need to turn on Automatic Updates if you don't want, you can simply install them manually when it is convenient for you. Go to: Start > All Programs > Windows Update (near the top of the list)Reboot after installing updates, and then revist the update site until told there are no more updates.EDIT: added last line to post.

I've been using MSE for the first time since only a few days ago, on a used computer that it came with. The biggest drawback that I see is that it needs manual definition updates. I see that it will check for new definitions before a scheduled scan, but other than that, it needs to be updated manually.

I've been used to Avast and AVG updating automatically, not just every day, but several times a day sometimes.

What's your experience with the adequacy of MSE?

A:MSE Updates not automatic

If you are careful, MSE will be fine for you. MSE ignores certain types of malware and MSE's heuristics are very poor. It could not stop or remove this small bit of malware documented here: MSE worries

You can set the scans to happen every day...
...thus getting updates every day.

You can create a scheduled task to have MSE check for updates as often as you would like.

When I boot up I get an error message from DEP.
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
Automatic Updates

When I close message it reappears. When I send an error report to Windows, the message reappears.
Shutting off Automatic Updates gets me two messages, the same DEP message and another telling me my computer may be at risk.
I can find no way to rid myself of this nuisance.

A:DEP - Automatic Updates

Method one: Open the System applet from Control Panel, and select the Advanced tab. Near the bottom, click the Error Reporting button. You can enable or disable Error Reporting, or when you leave it enabled, you can specify which programs you want to exclude from being reported. This method leaves error reporting running but selects what if anything it is allowed to report.

Method two: Run Msconfig. Choose the Services tab and remove the check from the Error Reporting Service check box. Starting with the next time you reboot your system, the error-reporting service will no longer load.

A:no automatic updates

Hi there catablanca,

To activate the automatic updates you have to have administrater rights, and if the administrator disabled them than you probably need to log on as the administrator to activate them again.

As to the other problem, check the computer systems log to see what errors show up. It might give you a better idea of what is missing from the registry. You can also run a check disk from dos with the windows xp disk to see if it can find and correct any errors.

My query is regarding an automatic update namely KB890830 which I have been notified about several times and despite "installing" it each time the reminder icon keeps popping up again. Obviously it is not getting installed so has anyone any suggestions
how to get it installed or stop the icon keep reappearing. It is getting very annoying!!
