Preferred Solution: HELP!Start menu and taskbar not showing up!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: HELP!Start menu and taskbar not showing up!

Have you tried going to My Computer > Control Panel > Taskbar Properties. And uncheck "autohide" and checking "always on top."

If that doesn't work, then try moving the cursor to the bottom of the screen and right clicking. If you get a different menu click "properties" and then click "always on top," and uncheck "autohide."

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

Hi, I am very limited to my knowledge of computers and how to fix the problems. If anyone can give me any advice about my computer I would very much appreciate it. I turned my computer on about a week ago, it froze up, I restarted it and was missing my taskbar and my files where opened in a separate window. Nothing simple works. The obvious things do not work. I have no start button. It will not do anything. If I go into control panel, cannot open it from there. Please help!

When I restart my computer the only "extra icons" by my clock are my APC, Internet Icon and the volume icon. How can I get the Zone Alarm, AVG and other icons which startup when I restart my computer to show in the bottom right corner of my computer again?

Also, if I click on ZA it will add it to my taskbar area, but this doesn't work for AVG. I would like them to have icons anytime I restart my computer.

Thanks again for any help:)

I have windows vista, quad-core processer, 3 g ram....not sure if you need to know anything else.

Can anyone offer advice. . .Taskbar is not showing up when I start the computer unless I manually go into taskmanager. When I start the computer everything appears to load fine, but theres no taskbar. I can move the cursor and highlight any icons on the desktop, just can't click on them. If I control/alt/del to start taskmanager, then evrything seems to work fine. This started after I picked up a trojan and got rid of it. Apparenently it also go rid of some system files too. I've done multiple system restores, sfc, and still no fix. Short of doing a non-destructive restore to fact. default is there anything else I can do?

I am trying to help a friend of mine get her new computer to her satisfaction.

We both have Windows 7 and on mine (a few months old), I have both the large buttons on the taskbar at the button in addition to smaller icons to the left of them. She does not have to have the small buttons (Big ones are easy to setup) however, when she clicks on her Internet Explorer (and other programs she has pinned like Word, Excel, etc.) button at the bottom, it won't open up multiple sessions. Whereas on mine, I can click on the small IE button to the left and get as many sessions as I want.

I am also attaching a screen shot of my computer. As you can see, I have both big buttons and small buttons to the left. How does one get those small buttons? Thank you all VERY much for your help!!!

'Taskbar & Start Menu' will not open although 'Display' & 'Folder Options' will.
I'm stuck here...suggestions on how to pin the 'Start' icon to the taskbar?

Ok I have found something else on the web and tried it but does not fix everything

I right-clicked the bottom of my screen and now I have desktop toolbar and the start menu. But I can find no option to show the running tasks or windows if you prefer.

Edit: I am logged in to a secondary account right now as this one I have minimal success. My primary account I can not bring up taskbar at all!

This is account I have to right click bottom of screen and check something and it appears although it does not show tasks that are running.

Also when I log into my primary account(with no start menu or taskbar) I can hit windows+L and when I select another account it brings me right back to account selection and only one I can select successfully is the primary one.

To access my secondary login I needed to restart my computer and go straight there!

The name showing up in the start menu is wrong. I changed the name in my hotmail/outlook/msn account quite awhile back, before I even got this computer. But the name showing up on the computer is the old one. How can I make it correct and show the changed name?

A:Wrong name showing in start menu

Hello pancake,

That would be correct then. The original user name will always be used in places like this.

The only true way to fully change your user name is to create a new account on the PC with the name you wanted instead.

I'm writing this for a friend.

"About 1:00 this morning, my Gateway Laptop starting acting strangely. I was surfing the web when suddenly my computer began running incredibly slowly. I decided to restart, but when my profile opened, my entire desktop was clear, start menu included, save for my wallpaper.

"The start menu and icons appear at first, but then clear away after a while. In that time, I can open up outside applications, but not My Explorer or anything windows related. I brought it into Best Buy this morning and they told me that it was a virus that hit explorer.exe and that I had to back up everything and nuke the hard drive with a reformat.

"Needless to say, I wanted a second opinion. What do you guys think? I'm running XP, btw."

I'm on XP x64. Whenever I start up my computer nowadays, the start menu doesn't even show up. I've been waiting for a long time for it to. The reason I'm able to post on these forums is because I went through Task Manager, and File -> New Task (Run...) and typed firefox to access this site. It's just the idiotic startbar. Halp?

EDIT: Oh yeah. Whenever I log in (i'm using the Welcome screen), and it says "applying your personal settings..." or whatever, I have to hit ctrl alt delete to ge ttask manager. The only time windows will load is if the start menu DOES show up which is rare.

A:The Windows start menu bar is not showing

Hi lwabbott and welcome to TSF !

I removed your mail since leaving it in plain text on an open forum will get you plenty of spam in your mail box in no time once bots will have found it. I can remove your phone number as well if you want.

Is it only the task bar or the task bar and icons ? In the first case have you tried dragging the mouse to the bottom of the screen to check that it was not unlocked and minimized ? What happens when you press the windows key ?

If all the icons are gone as well then can you access the task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+del ? If so what happens when you go to file => new task and type explorer.exe ? Go to file => new task and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer and your hard drive will be checked for errors. See how it goes.

Do you have the XP install CD and what service pack is on the CD ? If this is some brand computer that didn't come with a CD then what's the brand and model ?

I don't know why, but I've noticed that all the programs in the start menu with links to websites don't show the IE7 icon. Why is that. I've also noticed in the system32 folder that the shell32.dll shows up many times with numbers beside them. I have shel32(3).dll, 4,5,6 + the original shel32.dll. I don't think it's normal. How the hell did they duplicate like this? And how do I correct the situation with the icon association in the start menu?

Thank you

I have a strange problem and sadly none of the GREAT guides about the star menu on this forum helped.
The Problem is:

But it does not show any Icons from my user:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

I've got no clue how to fix that. Can someone help me?

I sure would appreciate if someone would help. Something I did a few days ago has caused my start menu and taskbar to disappear and for the the life of me I can't realize what I need to do. I am running Vista. Keep in mind I have NOTHING at the bottom of the screen, so I can not turncomputer off, I cannot click in an empty space. I did go into startup and task bar properties and "lock toolbar" is unchecked. I know I should be able to fix this but I think I am "brain dead"

A:Solved: start up menu and taskbar gone

here is a suggestion from another forum that worked for the poster ...

When you boot and see the black screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL. Select the Task

In the Task Manager, go to File/New. Type explorer.exe and click OK.

Does this cause the Desktop and TaskBar to appear?

I was wondering if there was a way too make the taskbar look like vista's bar and make the start menu a different color, maybe even a gradient (if possible)? I have attached an image of what I would like to accomplish.

A:Change Taskbar and start menu look

possible, using 3rd party themes with uxtheme patched and modified explorer.exe for the startmenu icon.

I'm experiencing some difficulties with clicking stuff in my Start Menu. I can click on my Start menu, and I can highlight and select things in there as well, but when I place my cursor over a sub-menu, such as All Programs, the next sub-menu will open, but I cannot highlight anything in there, and the entire taskbar freezes as well. I can click on the desktop or anywhere else to close the start menu though, but I cannot select anything inside the All Programs sub-menu.

Any ideas?

Normal booting

Hello. We have Windows Vista. No icons on the desktop. No taskbar. No Start menu. Can't right click. But I can ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager. This is in normal booting.

Safe mode w/ networking

I tried "safe mode with networking". Then choose a user. All the icons are on the desktop. Taskbar and Start menu is available.

I can right click.

I can surf the internet. I downloaded and installed malwarebytes and ran a full scan. No infection or anything.

I downloaded and installed ccleaner and then ran "cleaner" and "registry". I am now uninstalling a lot of games in "tools".

I also did "system restore". I chose "recommended restore".

Still no icons, taskbar, and start menu in normal booting.

Everyting is done in "safe mode with networking" since I cannot do anything in normal booting. Please help.

Welcome
To start lets try with clean boot. If you work with safe mode, maybe you will work with clean boot and then we can determine the cause
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
In addition to Malwarbytes run a full anti virus scan.

When i turn on my computer it completely skips over the start menu and immediately goes to where the desktop should be. Instead of my background though, the whole desktop is just black. Probably buried in the registry. Try opening regedit and searching for a word in one of the items you want to delete. Be sure to make a backup of your registry before changing anything.

A:Start Menu (Or Whatever It's Now Called) Gone From Taskbar

Welcome to EightForums, marylebone.

Are you talking about the mini Start Screen that appears on the bottom left corner? This is one of what is now called a hot corner.

You may go to the Start Screen by pushing the Windows key. Push again to return to previous screen.

Hi, this is my first time to use this site. I've been having problems with my computer for several days and haven't been able to fix it. I'm using Windows XP pro. The taskbar at the bottom and the start menu don't work and when i mouse over them it just shows the hour glass. I've tried ending and restarting explorer.exe and restarting the computer doesn't help. I've tried doing system restore and that doesn't help either. I don't know if I have a virus, or if I might have accidentally deleted something, but I don't remember deleting any files recently. If someone could help, I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Blake.

A:Taskbar/start menu not working

First check to see how much ram you have (one or some may have gone bad) you may have only enough to run your OS. If this is not the case then run your antivirus s/ware, see if that solves it. If not, whack yur Xp cd in to boot to, and repair yur current install, no data will be lost.

Good luck my friend!

1. Taskbar/Start menu freezes. Navigating through the start menu options eventually crashes/freezes it.

2. When taskbar frozen the Desktop icons are still active and I can open those. I can also open MyDocuments folder

3. Although I can open MyDocuments folder and navigate in there, once I try to open MyComputer folder it freezes.

4. Can't shutdown computer because Start menu frozen; Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work - only puts the task icon in the tray but can't open it. Alt-F4 doesn't close it either. have to hold the on/off switch to shut down.

I've tried:
1. sfc /scannow (no results)
2. changed hard drive (no change)
3. antivirus, spybot, adaware all good.

I'm going to update the PSU unless someone has a better idea.

Here's computer specs:

A:Taskbar/Start Menu Freezes

have you downloaded anything at all recently, particularly just before the problem occurred? Will the computer allow you to download anything now, if so try C Cleaner. Can you start in safe mode, if so do the same problems occur. Also do you have a copy of Hijack This? If you are able to run a HJT scan paste it in to the relevant forum on this site just to be sure you have no malware problems, in fact check that forum first because they prefer you to do HJT and other scans and post the results all together.

Hello kleopat, Since you are badly infected, please run the following scans. Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee. When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post the log. ***********************Download SUPERantispywareLoad SUPERantispyware and click the check for updates button. Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button. Check Perform Complete Scan and then next. Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found. Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next. Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface. Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear. Copy and paste the log to this thread.Submit the SUPERantispyware log, the BitDefender log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

I have a PC running XP Professional. I wanted to delete some files to free up space but accidentally deleted a group of files that should have been compressed.

Since that time, I can not see my desktop icons but can see the background picture. I can not see the start menu or taskbar and right click does not work.

At first internet explorer did not work - I used netscape to access the internet - finally I was able to reinstall internet explorer and it works now. I have tried operating in safe mode but get a black screen only.

Appreciate your comments. I am new to the site, joined today - hope I'm doing this right because I am totally lost when it comes to computers.

A:No Desktop or Start Menu or Taskbar

Hello!
What I can do is give you some suggestions.

Try rebooting. What I mean is shutting down the comp, then turning the power button on, then clicking f8, and choosing the simple reboot.

Try to start the system from the last...how do you say it...the last "autosaved" mode. Because hopefully you did not delete the documents permanently. Computer is a machine, after all.

Bad case...but good luck, anyway.

Do you just have the normal Windows 7 installation, or are you using other programs,( third party applications), as well?

Some Malware programs can cause various strange behaviour. Download this;

Malwarebytes

And run it. Tell us what it says.

Hi,

Recently I was experiencing a bit of slowness when playing a MMO, and I figured that perhaps this was a Windows update that wanted to install so I tried restarting the computer. At that time, I got a message (disappeared too quickly to remember) telling me that something was "dirty" and it performed so sort of cleaning on all my files. Afterwards, the taskbar and the start menu did not boot with windows. I attempted to restart it again but still the same. The boots take a longer than usual time and the icons on my desktop show up quite slowly. As well, every 5-10 I lose my active window as if a program is about to open, but nothing ever does.

You could remove the hard drive and install it in another computer as a slave and get the files off of itYou could also try a rescue disk:Vipre rescue diskhttp://live.sunbeltsoftware.com/If you cannot bootup normally, cannot transfer required tools to the infected machine and cannot download anything while in safe mode, then your options are limited to what security tools you have on your computer. If those tools do not work, then your options become even more limited.Have you tried using System Restore from a command prompt in Safe Mode to return to a previous state before your problems began? If that doesn't work. these are links to Anti-virus vendors that offer free LiveCD or Rescue CD utilities that are used to boot from for repair of unbootable and damaged systems, rescue data, scan the system for virus infections. Hi,
I recently upgraded my desktop to Windows 10, but have encountered a few problems that I hope you could help me out with.
The taskbar is not working as intended - I can use it to switch between open programs and launch any pinned programs, but right-clicking them does not work. Left-clicking does not work on the running services? located in the bottom right corner, however right-clicking here does.
The start menu does not work either, clicking the windows key results in absolutely nothing. Manually clicking the windows key in the bottom left corner likewise results in nothing.
Finally the Start-up tab in the Task Manager is blank, and lists BIOS-time to be 0 seconds.
Hope you can help me out!

Running Windows XP Pro. I have no icons, no start menu and no taskbar. The only way I can run any program is to ctrl-alt-del and start a new task and I can run Iexlporer and get on the internet. However, I try and run Regedit, it comes up for a second and closes. I've ran Housecall, Virus Scan, and Regedit in Safe Mode but have found nothing. I've been getting "Project1, It's Time" popup and sometimes I get the RPC 55 second countdown to shutdown as well. I figure this must be something new or these virus programs are not finding my problem.
Any Ideas?

Hi,
Just tried to set-up AutoCAD 2008 Keygen.exe on my pc. It said that the application is incompatible so I just removed the file. The next day when I opened my computer, after logging on, the taskbar & start menu didn't show. With only one window opened, I tried to fix it through control panel but still it didn't work. Also tried Ctrl-Esc and safe-mode but to no avail.
Not sure if said file is not really compatible with Vista as what I have read on forums or it is a virus.
Can somebody help me fix this? The following might be of help:
File Description: Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor

Hi all,

I have a computer here with Windows XP Professional installed. The taskbar has hidden itself and seems to be corrupted in some way. I arrows appear to stretch it up from the bottom but you can't. Also pressing the windows key will not open the Start Menu. The taskbar is unlocked. It is not a matter of running explorer.exe either. There is no spyware on the PC but when I try to run some programs I get runtime errors. I have done several chkdsks and also done a repair install of Windows. Can't think where to go next. Urgent help needed please.

I have a Compaq Presario 3000 with Windows XP Home Edition.

Tonight my Start menu task bar with all my icons did not load and when I ran my mouse over the "blank" blue line the hour glass keeps running. A program is apparently trying to "load" and none of my other shortcut icons on my desktop open their programs either.

I am hardware illiterate and don't know if this is a Compaq problem or a Windows problem or another software problem.

ctrl-alt-del to task manager shows no programs running.

Please help with as little technical detail as possible.

The problem All the shortcuts from C Documents and Settings All Users Start Menu Programs have disappeared from my start menu The ones from C Documents and Settings lt menu showing in "All Shortcuts the from not Users" start current user gt Start Menu Programs are still shown I have spent Shortcuts from "All Users" not showing in the start menu the weekend trying to fix this to no avail so hopefully someone can give me some new ideas I m running XP SP on a Toshiba laptop I can t be sure exactly when this happened but I noticed it on Friday and I am certain this problem did not exist the previous weekend In that period of time the only software installs were an update for Keepass and an update for Mathcad It is possible that something else notified me an update was available and I just installed it without thinking about it but if so it would only be something like Java or Adobe flash If I go to C Documents and Settings All Users Start Menu Programs the shortcuts are all there and they are not hidden they just don t appear on the start menu The obvious way to fix this was to just roll back to a recent restore point where the problem does not exist Unfortunately I could not get any restore point to work even when doing the restore entirely in safe mode i e start the restore in safe mode and finish it in safe mode After a lot of messing around I came to the conclusion that the restore point cache was corrupted I confirmed that by turning System Restore off and back on to clear the cache Sure enough I can now create a restore point and restore it with no problems even when not in safe mode with Norton AV running but of course it means I can t fix the start menu by restoring to an earlier date Neither Norton AV nor Malwarebytes turn up any sign of malware other than a few tracking cookies anyway I ran chkdsk and it shows no errors A possibly useful piece of information is that when I installed Tweaking com which unfortunately does not have a fix for this problem for all users I get the error Could not create uninstall shortcut Tweaking com Windows Repair All in One Uninstall Tweaking com - Windows Repair All in One If I look in C Documents and Settings All Users Start Menu Programs no new folder or shortcut was created I can create one manually though So maybe it s some sort of permissions problem I have checked that nothing messed with the account permissions and sure enough I still have full admin rights and I can make changes to the shortcuts I found a MS hotfix that looked lie it might be helpful http support microsoft com kb because I thought it might force a start menu fix However it just throws the error Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of the system is newer than the update you are applying There is no need to install this update So much for that idea I ran the System File Checker with sfc scannow from the command prompt It didn t turn up anything Based on this site http bcrawfordjr wordpress com programs-menu-for-all-users-profile-is-missing-from-the-start-menu-start-menu I launched the group policy editor and looked under User Configuration Administrative Templates There is no entry for Start Menu and Taskbar I thought that maybe I could force a fix using the information from this site though so I added the two suggested keys to the registry and double checked they were correct using regedit They didn t make any difference They are still there so perhaps since they were not a solution I should remove them That s everything I can think of Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

First off sorry if this is in wrong forum but I have searched for over an hour and have not found a specific solution.

The typical 32 bit programs are installing in the program files 86 folder. I understand this is where they are supposed to end and the computer sorts downloaded files depending on capability.

My problem is not all programs in program files and program files 86 are showing up in start menu. I have set my start menu customization to default and I am not experiencing the complete disappearance of all programs.

This is a brand new computer out of the box with 64 bit.
Thanks...

A:Laptop won't hibernate despite showing in start menu, help please

I also rely on the modern Hibernate function which normally works well. If it doesn't then the first suspect is the Display adapter. Run Windows Updates to see if there are newer under optional - install all Important and Optional as well and keep it set to Automatic Install.

If not import the latest display driver from the PC or Device's Support Downloads webpage. If latest, try the previous one. They are saved in Device manager>Driver>update>Browse>Let me Pick.

If this fails, look in Device Manager to make sure your Network adapter Power Options allow it to suspend for sleep. These Power Options may also be available on other drivers' tabs.

In Windows XP when you click on start you should be able to see the most active opened files show up on a list.

For some reason mine isn't working. Nothing shows up except for the pinned items like Internet Explorer and Outlook.

I checked the settings and it should show 6 of the most used programs. I also checked to make sure the prefetch directory was functioning and it is and I also made sure the dcom and support services were running which they were.

How cn I fix this because I find it handy having links of my most used files that I use. I would rather not pin them to the start menu if possible.

Any help would be greatful

When you say '..mine isn't working.', do you mean that 'My Recent Documents' doesn't show up on the Start Menu? Or that 'My Recent Documents' is displayed but doesn't show you anything.

In any case, I only can guide you to where the control for it is.

Right click on Start -> Properties -> Start Menu tab -> Customize -> Advanced tab -> check the Check Box under the Recent Documents section.

Hope that helps.

I was attacked by virus that started SECURITY 2011 pop ups. It hid all my documents and settings subdirectories and links. Originally I had to run fixmbr and fixboot from the command line in order to get my laptop to even boot. I have ran malware bytes several times and removed viruses. I ran unhide.exe and my subfolders and links are accessable but the start menu subfolder show nothing (blank). I have went back to a pre-virus restore point. The desktop folder and links are present but they do not shown on screen when I login. Task Manager is not available unless I login under an alternative administrator login on the computer. AVG is not running properly. Several items such as resident shield are inactive and will not start. I have ran ccleaner and rkill. How do I get my desktop to show and my start menu links back?

Is it possible to remove taskbar and start menu? If it is - HOW?

A:Fully remove TASKBAR and START MENU

This is not exactly what you asked for but should help.
I do it this way all the time.

Ok Kind of hard to explain so I' m supplying a screen shot. Recently I started having my task bar on the left and have started to like it. Then just now I found that nvidia can make it transparent which I tried and also like but now whenever I hit the start menu and click a program or click away, part of the start menu is ghosted into the task bar. The only way to get rid of it is to move the task bar or take a boxed window and rub it through underneath the task bar to make it disappear. Any suggestions?
