Should An Xp Boot Disk Be Created? And Can Workstation A's Boot Workstation B?

Q: Should An Xp Boot Disk Be Created? And Can Workstation A's Boot Workstation B?

Hi all,

In days of yore it was recommended to create a boot disk...just in case. I don't know whether this is still in practice with Windows XP. From what I can see online...it is. I am trying to help out a small law office who is planning to upgrade to xp. I'd planned to write instructions for them for creating their start-up disks. One question I was asked (and couldn't answer) was whether each workstation needed it's own, or if they could just create one boot disk on one workstation and keep it in the safe for all to use.

Does anyone know? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

if its the same win xp pro cd (same serial) then it should work with all of them. but it also wouldnt hurt to make discs for all of them.

So I rebooted the win7 workstation went to login to it normally with the users credentials and it acts like its a new user login everything is default all pst's, docs, favs, everything is gone . If you browse the windows explorer you can see there are other similar profiles that it looks like used to be . What would happen if I tried to rename a user in Active directory?

I have a P50 with i7-6820, M2000M, 16GB. If I have the laptop docked and restart or cold boot it will not boot, fans spin up very high and screen stays black. I can turn off or unplug monitors when its like this and it doesn't help, the caps lock or numlock key won't change, as if its not POSTing at all.If I dock when it's asleep, hibernating, or on, it works fine. The only thing that works is undocking, holding power button down, powering on, and redocking.I have a USB Hub (Dell P2715Q USB with Webcam/speakers plugged into it) and dual 4k monitors. One 4k monitor is on display port on the dock and other is on Thunderbolt 3 to DP adapter. Is anyone else having this issue, is it known or planned on being fixed?

My husband has a HP xw6400 Workstation running Windows 7 Home Premium. Last night, the when powering up the PC, it posted this error message:HP Ethernet boot agent v 8.3.9928 Non-fatal uncorrectable FBD error on DIMM in mother slot XMM2M13 Err non-retry on redundant retry FDD memory alert on redundant set timeoutM21 Err motherboard CRC error on FBD sync status (slightly #48)If you hit f1, the machine will continue to boot into Windows 7 & appears to work fine. The machine has 8GB RAM, a 250GB hard drive for the C drive, a 2TB hard drive I installed for storage, a PCI soundcard I install from my husband's old PC. This error message appeared AFTER I installed the sound card & 2nd hard drive.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong & how I can fix it?

Thanks!

A:Boot Problem HP xw6400 Workstation

I'd think it's a possible weakening CMOS battery.

When the CMOS battery begins to die...net affect on the system can vary...various error messages may appear, all relating to hardware...system clock may need resetting...BIOS can defautl to network boot whereby O/S was installed by manufacturer.

The CMOS battery is a $5 item, available just about anywhere selling electronic/computer batteries (Walmart, KMart, etc.).

I would try replacing the current one.

I'm going to install these two operating systems on a single hard drive and want to know the best way to go about doing it with the least amount of problems. I'll be using Red Hat Linux 7.0. Which one should I install first? Do you know of any problems that I should anticipate? Any help would be great. Thanks.

A:NT 4 Workstation and Linux dual boot help...

There are some good articles on dual booting on the net. I'd first look at Reuel's documentation on dual booting:

http://www.xperts.co.za/multiboot

Also take a search on MS Technet site:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet

Other considerations:

On my multi-boot system I created a c: partition and installed dos 6.22 on it. I made it big enough too act as the shared swap file for each OS. Then installed NT/2000 first then Linux.

Good Luck!

I ran spybot (in an effort to dump commonname) and the program asked me to re-boot.

When I did that, I got a LSASS error; (prior to the logon screen)

So I click OK

Then I get a WINNT\AUTHORITY error

So I cannot even log in.

I have a dead 6 gig drive on a IBM 300gl used to work in a machine shop hooked up to run a machine. The software will only run
on an nt workstation. How do I format a small hard disk to run on nt os on this computer?

A:replace nt workstation hard disk

As long as the computer supports booting from a CD, just insert your NT disk and restart [after you have installed the new hd] Setup starts and shows you the drive; choose what type of file system ie FAT or ntfs. If the system does not support booting from a cd, then you will have to use the four [I think] setup floppies. It has probably been at least 13yr since I have installed NT and this is from memory so it may or may not be completely accurate.

Finding a hard drive that will work with that old of a computer is going to be an issue. Most likely it is limited to 10gig or so and those are just not made any longer.

Here is a technet article that might help you;

I just reformatted a dell dimension L866R and changed the windows to xp pro. Since changing the boot order in the BIOS this message will appear. When you press any key the message just keeps repeating itself in a loop.

When you put the windows cd and don't boot from the disk windows will come up. I cannot access the BIOS to try and change the boot order which I think that it might be.

Previously the computer had windows 98SE but the video drivers would be recognized. Decided to upgrade to newer windows version.

A:Vista will not boot - Unmountable Boot Volume - Won't Boot from Disk Either

and I'm not talking about a good answer. ANY response at all would have been appreciated.

My original post, titled Vista will not boot - Unmountable Boot Volume - Won't Boot from Disk Either seemed like it would be the kind of posting that would have elicited some response - Can't boot normally, in safe mode, or last good configuration. AND, can't boot from a genuine Microsoft Vista Home Basic disk.

But nothing.....

So I inserted an old HP Windows XP OS CD into the machine, and booted to the recovery center, where I selected to install XP. I formatted the drive, and then ejected the disk. I then put the Vista disk in, and booted from it.

Presto, it worked. This time it actually took me to the Vista Repair / Install page.

I deleted the partition, entered the product key and re installed Vista.

It is now working beautifully.

Thanks for your help.

A friend of mine runs a preschool and has 3 old P3 computers that the kids use for simple games. He asked me to clean the hard drives and update the OS. Somehow, they have XP Pro installed - illegal copies that cannot be updated. He has disks for NT Workstation – legal copies (two have never been opened). I want to take the illegal OS off and put the legal OS on. So far, I haven’t figured how to do that and going backwards doesn’t seem to be covered when I did a Google search on how to do that. I tried “format c:” from XP and it does not want to do that, even from safemode and a prompt window. I tried booting from the CD drive and the install program for NT Workstation does not know how to do what I want either. Suggestions?

Offically Microsoft doesn't support USB ports on NT 4.

But you can use third party drivers, such as: http://www.bsquare.com/products/devtools/usbwin40/

i was just wondering what a workstation is. i'm kind of confused over the definition. i've seen dell advertising their Precision line of workstations with all the high end stuff (intel xeon, nvidia quadro, etc.) costing $$$, while i saw an ad at one of my local whitebox stores advertising what they call a workstation which is an intel celeron based system with el-cheapo parts selling for under $400 CDN. i aslo went to a local university library a couple weeks back and the terminals where the library catalogs are put are also call "workstations".

so what is a work station? i just want to know

A:what's a workstation?

In the modern day of marketing common words are stretched to mean anything, no point in getting exited over meanings..

A workstation may mean just about any computing device sitting on your desktop.

It may also mean a powerful personal computer (not only in PC sense) used for engineering and design.

The classical and most correct (IMHO) definition is a non-PC desktop machine, usually running UNIX. Workstations are made by Sun and SGI for example.

Howdy All things being equal or/vs. ?? Workstation PC the workstations that I ve worked on seem to be faster and more agile than PC s Is this my imagination or what My reason for asking is that I m looking at buying a workstation to fool around with and try and learn some stuff I m covered up with computers but who can have too many Right Besides I m old and need something to do---- What s the advantage in having on board CPUs let s say of Workstation or/vs. PC ?? mhz vs having mhz CPU Naturally we re talking about Slot s and I ve never fooled with a Slot Specifically I ve been offered this InterGraph TDZ- GL for It has one Pll mhz CPU and a slot for another one MB ram - GB HDD s CD-Rom Floppy Video keyboard and mouse It has the Tyan-Tiger mobo ver F which will support - mhz Plll s Should I get this thing and if so----what will I have and what can I do to make it better Also what is are Pentium Deschutes Basically my computer use is fixing them building small ones and giving them away I use a computer for surfing and keeping up Workstation or/vs. PC ?? with my investments I ain t making movies or designing spacecraft Any insight will be appreciated spaceman nbsp

A:Workstation or/vs. PC ??

Pentium Deschutes are pentium II chips that started at 300 mhz and ended at 450 mhz, basically obsolete now.

Slot 1 are actually easier to work with, all you have to do is fit them into the slot and put the cartridge retainers into the locked position. Slot 1 cpu's are obsolete and out of production now as well. Makers have gone back to the PPGA/FCPGA package.

Dual motherboards of equal size (say two 450's versus a 900) are a tad bit slower than the single chip version as far as I know.

Only reason I can think of that a workstation is faster is the limited software and applications that are run.

Well, having 2 Xeon E5s with a weak GPU and little RAM means the PC is aimed at computing tasks, not graphic design. Would you mind building your own machine? It allows for more customization is cheaper, and has a much wider range of options. I am also more familiar with building custom workstations rather than prebuilt (Dell, HP, etc.) workstations. A:CPU upgrade for workstation

It's not capable of utilizing more than 2GB of RAM, so not sure how you'd potentially need 64-bit to address what it can handle now.

I'd look at upgrading personally, compared with today's technology that motherboard is woefully inadequate and by the looks of things only supports very early LGA 775 processors anyway. You essentially be throwing money at obsolete technology.

Several months ago, I formatted and reinstalled XP Pro without any problem. Recently I noticed that when I press the Windows key & L to lock the workstation, I am sent to the main windows logon screen where the various account holders can select their icon and log in. Before I formatted, when I locked the work station a small window popped up saying "this workstation has been locked and can only be unlocked by an administrator or insert-user-name-here etc etc" My question is how do I get that window back instead of the main logon screen?

ODD: Lite-ON Super All Write DVD-RW (24x)

RAM: Corsair XMS3 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3-1333MHz

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB (Sata r3, 7200rpm, 64Mb Cache)

PSU: Corsair CX430 (80+ Bronze)

Case: Corsair Carbide 200r

Thanks in advance!

I would strongly recommend a 120 or 128GB SSD for the boot drive ($100) and a WD Caviar Black 64MB cache hard drive instead of the Caviar Blue. You could get the 500GB drive instead of the 1TB to save a few $, but it may not be much cheaper. I just built a neighbor a PC using a Gigabyte motherboard last Friday and I was very impressed with it's quality and performance! Good luck!

is the creative sound blaster x-fi mb sound card, in a dell studio, asio compatible?
is there a driver that would work for this hardware?

A:audio workstation

If you just have the Xfi "MB" option that is ONLY a software enhancement to the Integrated Audio in the PC, It's not a full SoundBlaster Xfi sound "card". I'm not sure what all the software enhancement does. I do a lot of support on the Dell users forum but it's primarily with Desktops, and very little with Laptops. The Xfi MB software is strictly an OEM product and Creative (SoundBlaster) does not offer any support or software updates.

That 1774, if it is the correct model number, must be a new model as it's not listed in the Dell downloads yet as I wanted to check on the actual sound module used (e.g. RealTek or IDT).

I have a Retail PCIe Xfi Fatal1ty on my Desktop and it is ASIO compliant and my Sonar 8.5.2 Recording program recognizes it (although I don't use it with Sonar).

I have a PC running XP in my shop that boots to the F8 menu. It will not complete booting using any of the choices. It goes partway, displays the XP loading screen with Safe, Last Known Good and Normal options.

Then it resets itself and goes back to the menu.

What version of XP? According to the COA on the case it's XP Professional.

I've tried a couple of recovery CDs but their utilities to force a System File Check during boot or to use System Restore won't work because they say the installed XP is "not XP" or is Windows NT Workstation.

So I'm fresh out of ideas! I've never seen anything like this with XP. I could use a recovery CD to copy files to an external drive then wipe it and reinstall, but that's the simple yet time consuming way to fix it.

A:XP identifying itself as NT Workstation.

If you have any service packs installed, then you don't have the same operating system any more. If you have SP3 installed, you need the XP SP3 CD to do a system file check. You should have made one when you changed to the new OS or you have no CD to repair with.

Hello,

We built one workstation and would like to image other workstations from it. The 3.5 diskette ghost disk I made loads the NIC driver, it binds, but then it hangs every single time on the loading. I used the same diskette on the GX-50 or GX-60 model and it works fine. Can anyone tell me why the loading is hanging? Is it because the SX280 is using the ATA instead of the IDE port for the hard drive?

Hi starcraftmasterVMware Workstation will indeed allow you to run an operating system within another. You say you want to run XP within ME. I am guessing that if you are running ME then perhaps your PC is fairly old and might not be up to running VMware. It would be best to vist their site and check out the system requirements for running it. http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/Note that you can trial VMware for 30 days before you have to part with your money. There are alternatives to VMwareMicrosoft's Virtual PC is free and can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en However it is not supported on ME.Sun's Virtual Box is also free and can be found here http://www.virtualbox.org/ Again you will need to check out the system requirements for running it.

My HP Workstation 8000 will not boot. I was downloading a torrent, and then opened the .avi file, and it told me to go to torrentm8.com to decrypt the file. I went to the site, didn't download anything, and the computer just froze. (could this be multiple trojans.avi?) I had no option but to turn it off. Now it will not boot, nothing on the monitor, though fans and drives are running. I would have made the HD a slave in another computer to save the data, but no one else seems to have internal SCSI. What can I do? I really don't care about the data anymore I just need the computer to work.

Malware wouldn't cause hardware failure. If the system won't even post, I'd say it's a very bizarre coincidence.

The IT guy here ordered a new workstation for me (without asking me what to get)

If it is not going to be considerably better, I will let that workstation go to someone else and wait another year for the "chance" to ask for what I want.

Everything else about the new workstation (Dell Dimension 3000) is an improvement. My only question is about the video card.

Existing: NVIDIA GeForce 256 AGP (Dell)

New: Integrated Intel® Extreme Graphics 2

Does anyone hve any opinion on the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 card? Is it any good? better/worse than my existing card?

I have a windows 2000 sever and workstations that are win 95 & 98. My bosses machine is windows 2000 professional. When I browse the network his machine is seen with the servers not the other workstations. How can I change his machine to be a workstation like the rest? I think this might be why he has the problem of right clicking on something in the server taking 20 seconds for the copy window to open. Can somebody help me?

I'm thinking about buying this to run on my second harddrive. First, Is this a good windows version? Is it comparable to 2000? Is it better than Me? And finally is it worth 15 bucks? Any help with these questions would be great!!!! Thanks for your input!

A:Windows NT Workstation

If you have windows 2000 running on your system, then I personally would not purchase and install windows NT 4.0 unless you want to take a look at it and learn something about it.

It is possible that if your hardware is too new, then you may have problems finding drivers for it. Also NT does not have USB support.

You cannot compare NT to ME they fit different purposes - business vs home.
The righ comparison would be win95 or NT...( but still fit different purposes)

If you would like to upgrade the OS and find something better then ME, then get XP Home.

Ok, so I have a computer running WindowsNT Workstation 4.0. I am trying to get it to see the DSL router on the network. I am on the right IP address and have the Gateway correct, as well as the DNS addresses. I can ping outside addresses but can't not hit any sites or ping the name.

Any ideas on what else might be holding back name resolution? The DNS addresses are correct and work fine on the other Win98 stations. Thanks!

A:Dns problems on NT Workstation 4.0

Greetings

Is the DNS server a local domain server or an external ISP DNS server?

Are you in a domain or a workgroup?

The only thing I can think of, is that the DNS is part of the local domain, but your machine is not logging onto the domain (or does not even have a computer account on the domain), and thus is not being given access to the DNS server.

However, if you are in a Workgroup configuration, and the DNS server is your ISP's DNS server, then I have no idea, excpet perhaps for a slight typing error like 169.1.2.3 instead of 196.1.2.3

Cheers

A:Problems with xp and my new Workstation

Did you format the drive before install?
Depending on the parameter of the install it may have been doing a repair install
and thus writing all of the old information to another are.
If that was the case and the drive was near full there would be limited space for the new data.

A fresh install on a freshly formatted drive is the best technique.

Here's my problem, I have 4 kids and 1 computer. I sent my computer out to be worked on and was wondering if it was possible to turn it into a workstation so, I can get more then 1 person on it at a time. I've been doing some research and have read about betwin 2000/xp and winconnect server xp. I am looking to see if anyone has ever used these programs and if turning 1 tower into a workstation using windows could be done. If so, how?

The workstation has a printer hooked up to it that other workstations print to but now they cannot see it. If I run ipconfig/release and then renew, it cannot get a new IP address, but if I reboot it, it will get one. IP addresses are dynamic. Does anyone know what is going on? Thanks.

A:Want to buy a workstation for video and 3d

I would not go for an Opteron processor as they are meant more for servers than desktops. For a build like this, you would either be looking at the AMD 8350 flagship or an Intel I7 4xxx.. The main difference is that Intel is faster on single-threaded tasks (that is the major difference), but AMD is ever so slightly faster on some multi-threaded tasks...

Would you be willing to build the computer yourself?

Stop: c000026c unable to load device driver \device\floppy 0\ ntfs.sys device driver could not be loaded
error status has 0xc 0000221

restart and set the recovery options in the system control panel or the /CRASHDEBUG system start option

when the above blue screen appears, the system freezes and i have to reset ( control-alternate-delete ) does not cooperate

kindly advise.........thanks with a star

p.s. maybe it has to do with partitioning with NTFS instead of FAT32

A:NT 4.0 Workstation Install

NT4 doesn't support FAT32 at all.

You will need to repartition if you have created a large FAT32 partition. Create the partitions from within the NT4 install and it will allow you to create the largest system partition it can support, which is about 8 Gb for NTFS, and 4 GB for FAT. You can then partition the rest of your HD as a data partition.

WD 320gb internal hdd sata 3gb/s

I'm baffled on what to do, no matter which disk drive I put it in, what order the bios boot menu is, I get the same error. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me! Thank you!

Hello NT Experts!!
I have an NT machine that is used by about 8 different users (each user has their own local logon). As I understand (and correct me if I'm wrong), each user will have an independant address book, because the address book is stored in each user's respective profile. Unfortunately they want to all share an address book regardless of who is logged in. Is there a way to have a central shared address book for multiple NT users??

Thanks,
Johnny

A:Address Book - NT Workstation

Just so you know I am not an expert at this.

I first need to know what Email you are using with these address books??

I am only familiar with Microsoft Outlook 98 / 2000.

The way to share an address book between users in Outlook is to create a folder under Public Folders / All Public Folders and add all the contacts they require or import the addresses if that is possible.

If it is located under Public Folders everyone should be able to access it. You may have to alter the permissions on that folder to allow everyone access.

Right click folder

Hope that helps!!

I use a specific GTX 960 and it works just fine in my Precision T3400.  I do have problems with ATI R Series like the R7 260X where they wont go into cmos setup complaining that they cannot do DOS VESA Mode 103.

Hi Recently had a computer 7 Z400 HP workstation Windows - get a blank screen on HP Z400 workstation - Windows 7 reboot it would loop in the Windows Professional bit startup repair utility I was unable to repair from an image so I had ordered the Reinstall Repair disks from HP While waiting I googled the error and found symptoms similar to others who had a rootkit virus and they mentioned getting to the desktop by choosing the boot option of not verifying signatures and then cleaned the virus with TDSSKiller from Kaspersky Those suggestions worked in our case and TDSSKiller found the infection in MBR Program said it was removed and I did an additional scan with MSSE MS security essentials and everything looked good Her computer shut down over the weekend for windows updates and on reboot the virus was back I followed the same procedures but I believe the malware virus is still residing in the master boot record I need some guidance on additional steps to clean it up thank you Gabe

Please be patient as this can take some time. When the scan completes, push Click , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScanClick Click and then use Security Check, saving it to your Desktop and:Double-click SecurityCheck.exeFollow the on screen instructions inside of the black boxsave checkup.txt to your desktopRember to re enable all the protections that you have disabled and include the contents of the reports in your reply.

I recently rebuilt a Windows XP Pro workstation one of my client's sites. They have a domain server running Windows 2003 SBS, and the workstation is connected via a Linksys wireless network.

After successfully logging on the domain, I can access everything just fine. I begin to browse shares on the server with no problem for about a minute, then get a popup saying "working offline" and can no longer browse.

After this happens, I still have connection to the internet thru the server, and I can successfully ping it, but no longer have access to the shares.

I've search the MS knowledge base and the web, but can find no answers.

Can anybody figure out what would cause this workstation to disconnect from the domain after about a minute?

Thanks in advance!

A:XP workstation disconnects from domain

Via a wireless router? have you checked the log in the router? find the log and select loggin only connections for a short time.
Next signal strength. If it dips down to two bars, sometimes they will disconnect. Attempt to move it and connect via cable and see if this doesn't occur. That will determine if it is wireless issue.
