I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Close programs to prevent information loss popup?

Is this the machine in your specs? Post specs if not.

With 8GB of RAM you shouldn't get that warning. Maybe some program is leaking memory. It is a legit warning, not sure the reported program actually responsible.

Recently I was following a link and landed on a webpage and as soon as I hit it my Firefox download window appeared, some file got downloaded in the blink of an eye and the next thing I knew I was infected with a rootkit!!

I don't want anything like this to happen again so how do I prevent a website from performing a download without my first initiating it? BTW, I'm a software engineer - could someone please explain in technical terms how a website can even do this in the first place? I'm running XP Pro, SP3.

PS - I'm not wedded to Firefox - if it's easier to prevent automatic downloads in IE then please tell me how to do that.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

A:How to prevent automatic downloads in FF

This kind of exploit is what is termed a drive-by exploit. It can use a security hole in the browser or some other software to circumvent normal security.

If you have Java, Flash or something similar installed that is all it takes.

To better secure FF, make sure you're always running the latest version and use NoScript, FlashBlock and AdBlock. Always be sure any other software you use is up to date. This is especially true of Java, Flash, Adobe Reader, etc.

WIndows 10 is automatically downloading and installing to my networked computers. How can I prevent this on my network?

A:how do I prevent automatic installs

"WIndows 10 is automatically downloading and installing to my networked computers"Earlier this year, Microsoft made the upgrade to Win10 a recommended update rather than an optional one. If you have Windows Update configured to automatically download recommended items, the Win10 installer files will download in the background. Supposedly it will not install unless the user takes action to allow it but many sites claim that it's installing without the user's OK.https://www.theguardian.com/technol...http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/0...

I support a large community of seniors Typically I have them running Automatic Updates because they don't want to do their own maintenance The most common complaint they come in with is there computers are really slow It usually turns out that they have to updates pending on Windows Like the rest of the population many have abandoned the PC for a tablet for most of their computing because its faster and easier and they don't have to dink around with weekly updates and reboots I'm really worried about the changes coming early next year with Windows becoming an automatic update I think most of them could get along with Windows except the amount of internet usage Automatic Upgrade 10 to Windows Prevent required Most of my user's are getting by with Comcast's budget service of MBs If they are so slow with Windows security updates what is their internet going to be like with Windows still receiving such huge updates every week Anyway I'm looking for the easiest way to prevent Windows from downgrading to Windows if automatic updates are left on

This article (that I took from Karlsnooks of Seven Forums) will prevent that problem. The problem is caused by the conflict with many reboots from the many updates that come every month.

I have group policy set option 3 (detect updates) for my domain. I tried option 4 (download & install), but this also reboots the computers, including the servers, if no one is logged on. I don't mind if the workstations reboot, but I don't want the servers to reboot.

I don't see any way to accomplish this. Has anyone had success with this?

A:How do I prevent automatic downloads, I have limited data

Hi Roger, welcome to the Eight Forums.

There's quite a lot you can do. First of course is to change Windows Update settings. Best option for you would be to check for updates but letting you to decide which of them if any you want to download. Tutorial: Windows Update - Automatic Updating - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

Second setting to change is the Store App Auto Update. Open Windows Store, open Charms Bar > Settings, select App Updates and turn the automatic app updates off. Tutorial: Store - Enable or Disable Automatic Download of Updates in Windows 8

Next, set your WiFi connection as a metered connection. Open Charms Bar > Connections, right click your Wifi connection and set it metered. Tutorial: Wireless Network - Set or Unset as Metered Connection in Windows 8

Please notice that a wired connection cannot be set as metered. Read more: Metered Internet connections: Frequently asked questions - Microsoft Windows Help.

Even if not set as metered you can always monitor your WiFi bandwidth usage by right clicking the connection and selecting Show estimated data usage:
Now you can see how much data you have uploaded and downloaded since last reset:
I hope this helps you at least to get started.

Kari

I have followed all standard procedures. At least three Dell technicians have worked on this problem for about a total of 15 or so hours. They have updated both Windows 10 and the (Realtek) microphone driver. I am trying to use the speech function of a language teaching program. I can answer one or two question on my microphone, and then it mutes itself.

Can disabling Autorun in Windows, help to prevent any virus from automatically executing on the host (PC), or only the autorun viruses, while you just insert the usb into the port. For example can it prevent taquito.exe virus to copy itself into the main partition, while forging itself as a system application, which remains undetected from many AV's.

Now that microsoft has removed the ability to force windows 10 to ask to be scheduled and given that "active hours" is a broken concept that doesn't solve any problem, how can I prevent windows from automatically restarting again? Is the only option to turn off windows update entirely now?

A:How to Prevent automatic restart in Windows 10 Anniversary Update?

Hello tannim,

What is broken about active hours for you?

Active hours lets Windows know when you usually use this device. When a restart is necessary to finish installing an update, Windows won't automatically restart your device during active hours.

Are there other tools that I can use? I tried to run GMER to look for rootkits, but it will not complete. I get message from windows that software has stopped and it closes. Are there other rootkit detection programs to use?  I need help making sure this computer is safe. Anyone have suggestions?

When I start my Win7 system then automatically "Windows Defender" pops up a window telling me with a yellow bar that the"Service has stopped".

After a while (approx 2-3 minutes) without doing anything else and clicking NO button the bar turn into green color indicating that there is "no unwanted or harmful software detected".

Questions:

How do I suppress the Win Defender at all?

How do I suppress it in case that is yellow or green but allow it when viruses are found?

How do I disable WinDefender (=not only the window appearance but the full software) completely ?

A:How to prevent auto-popup of WinDefender at startup?

Use one of the best anti virus around; Microsoft Security Essentials. It will stop Defender, automatically. Its engine includes Defender plus a good anti virus.
All you need for protection is Microsoft Security Essentials, The Windows Firewall, which you just turn on, as you have it already. Then Download and scan once a week with malwarebytes. Your problems are over.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

I will not use internet explorer because, in my opinion, it's buggy, non-standards complaints, easily hacked, and just plain ugly. On my desktop computer, if I click on a link within a program for its help or support site, Firefox, my default browser, opens the page. On my laptop, which has the same set up, internet explorer opens. If I disable internet explorer the link goes dead. Is there a way to have on Firefox (or Opera, or Chrome) open these pages?

Hi,
I want to prevent a program from accessing the Internet , how could I do this in Windows XP SP2, the integrated firewall can not do this, and I don't want to install a 3rd firewall. Can anyone give me a suggestion?
Thanks

A:Prevent programs from accessing the Internet , how ?

Open the Group Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC); might be something in there which allows you to block internet access for certain programs.

As many of you know who have AIM and visit the chatrooms, 11 year old kids who have nothing better to do than to make other people miserable wait in chatrooms and boot/kick/punt etc. people out of the room, either by using bots, or weird text.

I can, most of the time, prevent from getting kicked becuase of bots.
(when he person makes like, 50 different screen names send you chat invites, direct connect request etc. All you do is in the preferences, select "do not alloy" for people not on buddy list.

So my questions is: Are there any programs that cant prevent people from crashing me?.. the AIM clone, GAIM, prevents people from booting or ccrashing you but i did not like the interface and it wasnt as user friendly as AIM was.

Hello all,

First things first, here are the specs:
OS: Windows 7 - CPU: Intel Core i3, 2330M, 2.2GHz - Memory: 4GB - HD: 500GB - Model: ASUS A54C

I've had this computer for 6 months. I initially had TrueCrypt encrypting the whole hard drive. The performance was incredibly slow, so 2 weeks ago, I decrypted the drive and completely restored (formatted) Windows, restoring the 2 original partitions. After the restoration, I re-installed Norton 360, Microsoft Office 2011, Google Chrome, Firefox and Spotify. I have not re-installed TrueCrypt.

The computer is still painfully slow. It often crashes when performing simple tasks like web browsing. I am constantly reciving the following error message:

Quote:
Close programs to prevent information loss.

Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs:

Spotify
Desktop Windows Manager
Asus Live Update

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Right now I am running Avira antivirus, SUPERantispyware, and Malwarebytes. I am hoping Avira can prevent me from getting malware in the first place, and Superantispyware and Malwarebytes to clean up after Avira if I do happen to get infected.
So it happens that I got infected yesterday, superantispyware removed it, but I don't know how I got infected in the first place. Should I replace any of these programs? I heard AVG is better than Avira, should I exchange them?
thanks for any input guys, hope I didn't put this in the wrong section, i'm a newbie.

I know programs to prevent any files from executing code from removable media are an integral part of high-security, high-$$$ sensitive airgapped systems, but are any available for the general user, preferably freeware or FOSS?

Seems like they would be extremely easy to write -- just permitting manual copying of files from these drives and preventing all other functions, autorun, etc.

Likewise, are there programs that do strenuous BIOS integrity checks?

Many thanks for any pointers here!

While running vista I had my pc taken over by a couple rogue anti-virus programs...so i finally made the jump to windows 7 and had been clean for a good 3 months. However yesterday i got hit with "anti-spyware soft." I cleaned it up today but I'm wondering whats the best way to prevent my pc from being hit with these rogue programs... I keep auto-update on, Adobe Reader & Java are both up-to-date (i think they seem to exploit Adobe somehow to infect pc's), I use AVG's free version & just added MalwareBytes too

In short, I was wondering if un-installing Internet Explorer would help since once the programs do find a way in they use IE to connect to the internet...

Any suggestions??????????? Thanks in advance.

Since Windows 95 I have a nicely arranged start menu where I keep my stuff in order: I created a few folders like "office", "games", "tools" and moved all the start menu entries into the appropriate folder. I think it's much easier this way to find a program you need, compared to an overcrowded start menu where all links are on the same level.

This worked well for more than 15 years. However, recently applications like Evernote, Google Music/Chrome/Drive, Wunderlist and others have come up, that include an auto-update functionality which always restores their links in the start menu - on the root level! They don't realize that the links are already in the start menu (in a subfolder), and re-create them on the root level. So I have to keep up and delete them all the time, which is very annoying.

Does anyone have the same problem and/or know about a solution?

A:Prevent programs from putting links in start menu

Uncheck the box for "place in startup menu" or similar when you install the software. There's usually several boxes for options during the install. If the options don't show up, select "Custom Install" if it's available. It's very important to read the screens presented by software installs. Don't just click on Next. Many may include crapware as a default.

Sorry, if this question was answered already, couldn't find it. Maybe somebody could give me a quick hint.

I don't really need a firewall (I use a router).

I'm looking just for something that alerts me if a program wants to access internet (and send out information) and where I have the chance to allow or prevent that (recurring/nonrecurring). is there a small (preferably freeware) program availabe for this?
is this possible and useful with Windows Firewall?
if not, what Firewall (especially to manage the outgoing traffic) would you prefer?
Thanks a lot!

Wolfgang

Hi,

I've been given a friends computer to have a look at (and in my opinion it is the crappiest install I have ever seen done by a PC company- custom bootloaders, moddified themes, bloatware all over the place).

When the computer starts up, a warning that this copy of windows is not genuine pops up. I suspect this may be the case- but what is confusing is that the popup is for Windows Vista Ultimate.

The copy of XP runs a (modified XP start bar, Vista Icons). I've checked that its not a themed copy of Vista (my computer -> properties, checked control panel and its style networking, dxdiag confirms xp). The version of XP is some 'Xp Ice'.

Why would the windows Vista "not genuine popup" in an XP operating system?? And how on earth can I fix it?

Cheers guys

A:windows not genuine popup - xp but popup is for vista :S

install a valid, genuine copy of XP.
XP ICE is a pirated copy someone has cobbled together using pieces of Vista, hence the Vista error.

Hi,

All of a sudden i'm having problems with programs in the task bar.

If i have three programs open (say for argument Outlook, Solitare and Firefox). If all three are maximised but firefox is in the foreground i would normally click on Outlook in the taskbar to bring it to the foreground. However, now when i click on the Outlook tab (or whatever it's called) it just flashes orange at me and doesn't come to the front. If i click on it again it minimizes and a third click will maximise it to the front. If i then try to switch to firefox by clicking on the tab it flashes orange at me, minimizes on the next click and maximises to the front on the third.

It's driving me up the wall.

Any advice?

Phil

This is the second time I've gotten this bug and it seems to occur roughly two weeks after a fresh install Long story short I pin all of my favorite applications to the taskbar and when I click on a running program I expect it to bring focus to that program bring it to the front Instead it flashes yellow and the window that I want stays behind every other window The only program that does not do this is Digsby for whatever reason Basically the only way to see an existing window is to minimize all of the windows in front of it and only clicking on the window itself will give it focus That's partly a lie because I've discovered that a series of clicks on doesn't bug, front. programs to bring Taskbar the taskbar icon will do it namely right click left click right click left click I don't want to have to do four clicks when one normally works I am running Windows Professional -bit acquired through the MSDN program for students Academic Alliance or something I do know that I never had these issues in the beta with Ultimate edition Thanks

I'm assuming antimalware bytes. Full version would be better? Which anti virus. AVG free? or Avast full version? Do I need to select anything to constantly monitor.

last time I had Spybot tea timer running protecting the registry and that did nothing to help.

A:What are the essential antivirus/malware programs needed to prevent infection

At a minimum you need to use a good anti-virus suite and a firewall. I use AVG Free and Zonealarm because... well...they are free.....and I have had very good success with protection on multiple computers using them. I do not run any real time malware\spyware scanners. I do use the immunize option on spybot but not the tea timer. I do an occasional scan with malwarebytes and\or Asquared as a preventive measure as well.

Hi,
I need some software for windows 7 (If it isn't already built in Windows) that would prevent anyone (Even administrators) from deleting any files I created (Even if they aren't in my Documents folder) and to prevent uninstalling programs

And something that would prevent a shutdown by any user If I activate it and require a password for instance to unlock it (I know the PC can be turned off in other ways, I just need something like this)

A:Software to prevent shutdown, uninstalling programs and deleting files?

Any attempt to restrict what someone with an admin account can do is doomed to fail. By design all administrators are equal. Any program you can install, any setting you make, can be reversed or circumvented by anyone with an admin account. This is by design.

I think this is an Office issue using Win bit I only notice it in Word and Powerpoint If I open a Word file for example by double clicking in Explorer when I have other Word files already open when I x-out to close the Word file in front - it brings leaves one of the other Word files to the front rather than Explorer which should be right quot behind quot it because I just opened the file from there This is maddening and wastes so much of my time as I frequently browse and open many files quickly in Explorer close them and then always have to tab back to Office to How front files closing? after programs bringing other stop Explorer when it should be right How stop Office programs bringing other files to front after closing? in front It does not happen with many PDF files open for example I hope that How stop Office programs bringing other files to front after closing? is clear This is an issue with how the files are quot layered quot i have searched and searched the web and found no one else complaining about this I know XP didn't do this Please help me I swear I am not making this up Word Tom

A:How stop Office programs bringing other files to front after closing?

I love how you ended it: "Word".

I am experiencing the same thing. I happen to have Word 2003 and yep, it's doing the same thing. I didn't know that it didn't do this in XP and that it does this in 7 because I've never done anything to make me notice. However, I can see how stupid this is. It's inconsistent. It's almost as if Windows 7 is programmed to do this with Microsoft Office, almost like it's saying, "I see that you have other files open in Word. Therefore, when you close this one I'll shift the focus to the last document you looked at instead of shifting focus back to me". It's like, "Uh, wait a minute. That's inconsistent, Windows. What's wrong with you?"

I'm beginning to wonder if there's something in the Registry that is making it behave this way.

A:programs automatic on start up

go to start , then run, type msconfig and hit run. then go to startup and make sure you read them the one that are check will come up when you boot the ones unchecked don't boot. after that right click on the start meun and go to properties then go to the start meun tab and click customize on the classical start meun and click clear. this will clear out the fact you type msconfig cause it isn't good to play around it there unless you know what your doing.

I keep a USB MultiCard reader plugged in the back USB port at all times. I'm trying out Vista ReadyBoost feature. It works. However when I have to reboot (for whatever reason) the post process hangs at checking memory (probably doesn't check memory on soft boot). The next post process would be to look for installed IDE drives. Nothing happens after the motherboard version is displayed. With the USB cardreader unplugged, the reboot/post process proceeds as normal. Almost normal anyway, there is a short lag before the ide drives are detected. Why would a USB device interfere with a soft boot post in the first place? Is there something specific to multicard readers? Is it a voltage detection problem? Thanks in advance for answering.

A:Automatic resizing for programs and videos

Hi chilibert,
You said "I don't know how I switched that option on, but somehow Vista was able to recognize the difference between the screen size and the resolution (it's running in 1920x1200) and adapted to it". This is by design. The adapter will run the highest res it can by default. Did you to go control panel > personalize > display settings and try to change the resolution there?

Hi for each program there should be an option to stop auto run on startup so first of all check the program setting for each application.

If that fails start>run type msconfig and click on the startup tab.

In here will be a list of application, just uncheck the ones you don't wish to run at startup.

Hope this helps

Beside the picture placeholder, in Windows Messenger, is a question mark that can be used to open a drop-down menu.
Scroll to the bottom to "Show the Menu Bar" and enable it - a tick symbol will appear beside the selected item
Your menus will appear at the top of the window
Go to Tools>Options>Under the Sign In Pane >General
Untick "Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log into Windows
If you ever need to re-enable it, just type messenger in the search pane under the start orb

A:How can I identify ALL programs on system using Automatic Updates?

I'm not aware of anything that checks for programs that update. You can check the usual locations:
Startup tab in msconfig
Services (under Control Panel | Administrative Tools). Disable services like Google Update, look through the list to see if any others are "updaters"
Java - Control Panel | Java, Update tab, disable updating.

The Event Viewer (under Control Panel | Administrative Tools) might have a log of updates. Windows Automatic Updates writes events here, but no guarantee that other programs will.

A:Keep Getting A Popup-have Ran Several Spyware Programs

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible. We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access. I do not recommend that you have more than one antivirus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other antivirus products to create "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause false alarms - when the antivirus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't. Also it can cause system performance problems; your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Therefore please go to Add/Remove in the Control Panel and remove either Avast! or AVG.Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep. Then select Safe Mode from the list. Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click runThis.bat to start the script.Type Y to begin the cleanup process. It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.Press any key and it will restart the PC.When the PC restarts the fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).Post this in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log. Thanks,Charles

Hello, I'd like to have a usb flash drive backed up automatically every day

The tricky part is that I don't have it plugged in every day.

I'd like the backups to be simple file copies if possible so they can be browsed in explorer and have each day's backup go into a folder called something like %date%flash_drive

If the drive is not plugged in, then the backup would be skipped obviously.

Is there anything out there that can do this?

A:Are there any good USB Flash drive automatic backup programs?

Create a scheduled task to run each day.
Have that task start a batch file.
Put a file named something like back-me-up.txt on each USB drive that you want to backup.

Use code like this in that batch file:

Code:
if exist "z:back-me-up.txt" xcopy z:\*.* %UserProfile%\desktop\USB-FOLDER\*.* /yesvmk
if exist "y:back-me-up.txt" xcopy y:\*.* %UserProfile%\desktop\USB-FOLDER\*.* /yesvmk
pause
You can also read thru what the xcopy switches do. You can remove the pause after you get it working as desired. And you can repeat the code for as many drive letters as you want. There are other ways to deal with each of the drive letters, but this will keep it simple.

I occasionally need to rename a number of files in Vista's Windows Explorer. Typically, these files have similar filenames with minor differences. Vista's Windows Explorer will refresh its list (and reposition the files) for every file renamed. This is very disturbing when I need to keep the files in place so I can see the results of those already renamed along with those to be renamed. When I used Win2K the files would stay in place until I clicked View>Refresh. Is there any way to prevent Vista's Windows Explorer from refreshing the list until I tell it to?

Hi,

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002 and have this occasional problem when inserting a (any!) USB storage device on the front panel slot of my CPU, sometimes Explorer crashes. This usually results in me having to manually reboot (proper shutdown is unresponsive). Other programs that might be on while inserting USB (browsers, etc) are not affected.

I wonder if this is a hardware issue?

Thank you.

Investigating a friends PC due to virus, trojans etc and noticed practically every file on his PC is corrupt or so it seems. Installed MWBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, SBSD and ran a few scans. Found approx. 300 threats with SuperAntiSpy and things appeared better. Installed SBSD and after it installed got the yellow triangle with the ! in the middle with SpybotSD: spybotsd.exe - corrupt file and then it shows the directory string and says please run the Chkdsk utility. This popup bubble shows up for numerous files and not sure what is causing it. All scans with the scanners listed above come up with minimal threats if any at all.

How do I disable this:

A:Hovering docked programs shows popup.

thats aero peek, it looks like it not functioning correctly, it should show the thumbnail of the open window.

to check you could type services in the start menu search box.
click the result with the cog, and in the services window scroll down to desktop window manager session manager,
click on it to highlight it then in the left pane click start this service, if it is already running then click stop this service then click start this service.
you should then see aero peek as it is intended,
then decide if you want to disable it.
try it with several windows open to get a better idea.

if you decide you want to turn off aero peek then here is a tutorial how to from brink

When I open a program, say Internet Explorer or Recycle Bin, I see a dos window popup and the laptop makes this very loud beep. It is so quick that I cannot read it but it looks as though there are symbols scattered around the dos screen. Is there any way to stop this? I have to leave my sound off or it blasts my ears even at a low level. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I recently had some kind of corruption so that I had to restore an image backup using Macrium Reflect. This has been mostly successful but when I right-click on a text file in Windows Explorer and then select a program from the popup menu to edit it nothing happens. I reinstalled the editor I was using but this did not help. I do not have hours to spend on this - should I try an alternative explorer or is there any possibility of a quick fix?

(using TrendMicro Internet Security Suite for destroying the trojans and Ccleaner for removing the System Alert Popup in the Add/Remove programs without even rebooting or following any steps,I may have been lucky this time) but im still worried if it still is there or it became invincible so if anyone can lend a hand doing so by giving any suggestions on how to detect this, pls reply, any help will be accepted!

I have several programs that I run at nite while I'm away from my computer. Is there any way to prevent these programs from "waking up" my monitor?

Thanks,
Harold

A:Solved: Prevent Programs from "Wake Up"?

I can't think of anything imediately, if you already have your monitor set to turn off under the Power Settings in your screensaver window, and it comes on when the programs start up. Have you thought about just switching off the monitor when you leave the computer, and switching on again when you return?

I have a laptop with Windows Home Premium -bit and it can not install or uninstall programs in any normal way When you try to do so it comes up with this error quot The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation quot Now I have googled it and most posts refer me to use the Local Security Policy editor snap-in which is NOT available in Windows Home Prem So most say you have to edit the registry to enable this support but I have Can't Install policies programs prevent to - Install/Uninstall not ran across a reg edit that will help me with this specific issue My account is an administrative account and I have even gone as far as creating a new account with admin privledges and still get the same error I even got that error in the middle of creating the new account too So Can't Install/Uninstall programs - policies to prevent Install is there anyone out there who might know what registry entry I need to add modify to get passed this issue I will add that you CAN install programs so long as you right click the installer and run it as administrator Thanks for your time

A:Can't Install/Uninstall programs - policies to prevent Install

Welcome to the Seven Forums, peauxrouge.

If you are unable to install/uninstall any programs then it means that your computer is as it was when you purchased it. Are you the Administrator or not?

Try and log-in as the Administrator and then run gpedit.msc to change the Group Policy to allow installation/unistallation of programs. I am certain that one can run gpedit.msc from W 7 Pro upwards but I am not sure if it is possible in W 7 Home Premium.

If not then either ask the vendor about how to change the Group Policy or just clean install W 7 Home Premium from scratch once again.

Hi,

So, a while ago I had a mess with this thing, constant popups, etc. I found advice on this site re how to remove it, and all the popups stopped!!! It was great. This was a few weeks ago.

However, I just noticed now that it is still in the "add revome programs" list (285 MB!), and when I click to remove it I get a message saying it might have already been removed, and asking me if I want to remove it from the list.

How do I know if it was really removed or not? There are certainly NO popups.

THANKS!!

Hi, I need help on this one: when I open the Windows Explorer (Windows 2000) and double-click on a document to open it, the program (e.g. MS Excel when I double-clicked on an Excel document) starts in the background, Windows Explorer stays automatically in front. Did anyone ever hear of this? How can I stop this and make the program with the selected file type start automatically in front?

Any suggestions welcomed! Thanks.

A:Accidently clicked popup while surfing. all programs are terminated before launched

Sounds to me like your files with the .exe extension are being terminated by a trojan. The popup as you speak of must have had an .exe in the script of the page.Try downloading MalwareBytes and see if you can get it to scan your computer.http://www.malwarebytes.org/Bleepingcomputer has one of the greatest teams of professionals whose primary purpose is help people who have computer problems like yourself. You've come to the right web site to get help. I default problem programs/major fail Vista programs/opening don't really know what happened or how to fix things so I would really appreciate your help I downloaded a exe file that I trust with Vista default programs/opening programs/major fail problem uTorrent while I was away from the computer Upon returning I Vista default programs/opening programs/major fail problem saw a message that Panda antivirus security had blocked some form of traffic but I can't recall the exact message When I tried to open the finished exe torrent the computer slowed down and uTorrent wasn't responding so I pressed ctrl alt delete to open the menu for the task manager When the blue task manager screen did not come up I can't remember if I tried to open the exe file again or if I opened Firefox via the quicklaunch shortcut on the bottom left taskbar At this point I believe Mozilla firefox would not open and an error messege came up saying quot firefox is an invalid torrent file quot All three program icons in the quicklaunch section had the uTorrent icon I tried one of them Yahoo IM and received the same error Since I thought yahoo and firefox were trying to open via uTorrent I changed firefox's opener program back to firefox by right clicking and selecting quot open with quot After this firefox would open properly but now every program that had uTorrent's icon then had firefox's icon Clicking yahoo IM's quicklaunch button caused yahoo IM to try to use firefox as the opener I have NO IDEA what is going on and this has never happened before I have uninstalled the IM and tried to reinstall but the exe file provided by the yahoo site displayed an error message the file could not be found and now I have completely given up I don't think this is a virus but I don't really know anything about computers in the first place Pleaaaaaase help This is the worst thing that has ever happened to this computer and I feel like it is all my fault Save the computer if not me
