I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have Norton installed? If so, try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it to see if it gets rid of the problem.

I believe these are "tracking cookies" that Spybot is referring to. While I don't use the "immunize" function in Spybot myself, since you are, you should probably configure it to "block all bad pages silently"

Hi,
Recently I bought a laptop for my girlfriend (used) HP Pavilion:
AMD Athlon 1.6ghz 64 Bit
1gig RAM (2gig available)
nVidia Graphics Card

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate x64, we both loved it, ran smooth for about a day and then things went wrong. You know the normal Vista problems: shutting down unexpectedly, BSOD, bogged down. Anyways, I tested I think it was the first release MS came out with of Windows 7 and loved it but it was too buggy.

What do you guys think about me installing Windows 7 on her laptop?

A:Wanting to install Windows 7

Hey, welcome to the forums. You can have a bit of reading and see for yourself, at least you will need the extra gb of ram. cheersA PC for testing that meets these minimum system requirements (specific to Windows 7 RC and subject to change in the final version of Windows 7):1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

Hi there. I recently received this gift (Thinkpad T420) with Windows 7 Pro 64. Although it is okay, I am much happier with my Windows 8.1 on my other laptop (which is dying). I've gone to the support/download drivers pages and found that there are only a few drivers available for Windows 8.1 (64bit). There are no audio drivers, no chipset drivers, no bluetooth drivers, etc. Would it be a HUGE mistake to install 8.1 on this box?

I have the following configuration on my HDD right now:
[Free space] [Data partition - NTFS (No system)] [Free space]

I want to install Windows 7 to the end of the HDD and get the following configuration:
[Free space] [Data partition - NTFS (No system)] [Less free space] [Reserved by system] [System partition - NTFS - 200GB]

I've tried different tricks but it just ends up creating the "reserved" partition at the very beginning of the drive.

How can I solve this problem?

A:Install Windows 7 to the end of HDD, keeping other partititions

I found out that the "reserved" partition is not necessary. So I filled all the unused empty space with "dummy" partitions, and the installation is now in progress. I will remove the unneeded partitions afterwards.

The thread may be removed if it isn't helpful for anyone... But I couldn't find such a function.

Hi,

I've recently had some pc problems with malware and at one point, I uninstalled some programs that I didn't think I needed. Suddenly, I've been getting a message upon booting up that says "Unload" and shows an installer window...when I X it out, it just keeps coming back (sometimes it says Windows Installer instead of Unload.) The only way to get rid of it is by doing "End Task." Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Gents,

I recently upgraded my PC and installed Windows 7 to an SSD. The old HD that Windows was on has 3 partitions and I want to recover the space that Windows 7 was on (was C:\ now G:\) but leave the other 2 partitions alone as the data can not be moved easily.

If I mark G:\ as Inactive in Disk Management can I simply format G:\ to wipe that partition without effecting the other 2 partitions on that drive?

A:Removing Old Windows Install while keeping partitions

Yes, but DM may not let you mark it inactive, if it doesn`t just use Partition Wizard.

You didn`t have the hard drive plugged in when you installed Windows on the ssd did you ?

If you did, do not proceed without posting a snip of Disk Management

Does the ssd boot on its own ? Without the hard drive plugged in ?

Okay I have Windows Vista 32 bit. I want to clean install Windows 7 64 bit.

I have a 640GB HDD running my vista now. I was thinking of buying a 1TB Internal HDD because I need more space. I want to transfer all my movies, pics, music, etc to my new HDD and have it all on a clean windows 7.

So if I;
-unplugged my old vista HDD
-hooked up blank new HDD as master
-installed windows 7 to the new blank HDD
-click my old vista HDD to slave
-plug in the old HDD
-copy all my files from old HDD(vista) to new HDD(windows 7)
-format the old HDD to be windows 7

Would this work? Or would there be a problem switching the vista one to be a slave? Would there be a probalem transfering files?

Any other way that would be better?

Hi

I had some issues with my existing hd, so bought a new one and installed it as a secondary internal drive. I want to use the new one as the primary drive for windows and applications and keep the old one attached for storage if I need it. I performed a clean install (booting from windows 7 disk) and selected the new hd. I now have 2 installations of windows 7 and the old drive is now called "OS(D" and it wont let me format it, so looks as though Ive messed up somewhere. When I try to boot up to new hd it doesn't work either, so Ive no idea whats gone on.

I want to start from scratch and clean install on new hd and format the old drive, so any advise on the best way to do this would be appreciated.

thanks

A:clean windows 7 install on new hd, keeping old drive for storage...

Do the new installation to the new drive again, but first disconnect the old hard drive so Windows CAN'T install anything on it.

I'd guess you installed to the new drive while the old one was still connected. When you do that, Windows may try to put some of the boot files for the new install onto the old drive.

The new drive can't now boot by itself because the boot files for the new install are on the old drive.

Boot up with just the new drive connected. It should be C. If all is well, shut down and reconnect the old drive. When you then restart, the old drive will be shown as D and you can do whatever you want to it--reformat, copy stuff, etc.

A:Install Windows 7 retail over OEM keeping System Recovery partition.

When installing win7 you select on which partition to install (or in unused space). Win7 comes there. The win7 bootmanager and bootmenu come in the partition where it always was.... or (if no partition was marked active) in the win7 partition itself. So ... it doesn't touch the recovery partition

I'm not sure whether or not I have a virus, but here goes.

I have been using windows 7 for a few monthes but recently, I have been getting a popup that asked to allow malware removal. I kept not allowing it.

Before that, I was using Windows Defender just fine, but since I got the popups, I couldn't update windows defender. Nor could I download anything from windows main site. it keeps telling me that the site is down or something. I couldn't even install any new virus software removal. I decided to just reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows 7.

After that, I had a clean install and I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM! Now I can't use windows update, I can't even install windows defender from another site because it tells me I don't need to install it because windows vista already has it. except I don't have vista.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Can't install windows updates and other bad stuff

and welcome to the Forum

Windows Defender is included in Windows 7 so that is why you get the error message when installing it.

It sounds like you need help with cleaning out malware, please follow the instructions here, and post the logs in a new thread in the malware removal section.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

A:Wanting To Install 2nd Os

It sounds like you're trying to circumvent the copy protections on the Vista Upgrade disk, which is definately against the rules here.

If that's not what you're asking, then please forgive me and clarify what, exactly you're trying to do.

Recently i had a windows error that prevented me from logging into my profile, so i ended up doing a restore and that fixed the problem. But now like half of my programs are working, all failing to load. So i was thinking of just doing a clean install of windows and starting over. But the deal is that i dual boot my machine with linux mint, so i was wondering if it would be possible to do a clean install of windows 7 without having to delete the mint partition. thanks for the help in advance.

A:clean install of win7 and keeping install of mint

Welcome to Seven Forums.
Shouldn't be a problem. You should be able to delete the partition that windows resides on, create a new partition, then load Windows 7 in the newly partitioned space.

I keep getting the usual quot updates are available quot shield on my taskbar and it s always windows itself! install 3.1 installer won't for the latest update of windows installer I ve downloaded it times now and told it to install itself times now and windows installer 3.1 won't install itself! it always seems to work right but never really does It always goes thru its paces and the progress bar goes all the way to the right but at the very end it ends with a message that says two things basically it didn t install properly and I need to restart for the updates to take effect Those both can t be right at the same time obviously It must not have installed because a day or so later the shield pops up again and it s deja vu all over again I read the MS description of the update and it sounds as if it isn t really worth worrying about Is that right If so how do I stop windows update from reminding me every other day or so that it s an available update I want to be reminded just not for THIS one nbsp

Hi

Ever since I upgraded to the XP Service Pack 2, I've had nothing but problems. The most annoying of which being Windows Installer/InstallShield won't install anything. It appears like it will install, then stops when it says 'Configuring Windows Installer', then I get this message '1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime'

I have checked out the support at the InstallShield website. They address the issue on the site, but none of the solutions help.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any possible solutions.

Thanks in advance.

Trying to install a Silverlight Update, a Java update or other software, I get this window:

What could be the problem ?

A:Windows Installer won't let me install

Go to Control Panel | Programs and Features and uninstall Silverlight entirely, then go to microsoft and download the silverlight package and install it. I have had to do this a few times already, and it is annoying.

The same goes for the Java 6 Update 18.

Any suggestions?

There is a workaround to uninstall it, then reinstall on M$ site. There is also a Windows Cleanup Utility to clean uninstall some M$ progs on site. (I'm away so can't give the url's).

So after I did a repair install of XP for a previous problem I went to Windows Update. It said I needed to install Windows Installer 3.1 to continue. Instead of saying it was done, it said it was unable to install. Then I downloaded the file manually and went to install. It said something about not having permissions, or access denied. I thought it was because my system restore was screwed up, but that's now fixed, so I don't know what the problem is now.

A:Windows Installer 3.1 Won't Install

Are you administrator? If the permissions are screwed up, go into the Control panel and make sure you're an admin.

So I'm pondering doing a Repair Install.

Will doing so Reinstall the Windows Installer Program ?

Yes it should seeing as its a windows file.

I recently purchased software that requires that various Microsoft components be installed, including Microsoft Installer (MSI) version 4.5. I have tried to download the MSI 4.5 (WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe file) from Microsoft website but it will not install and leaves me with my current MSI version 3.1. During install of MSI 4.5 I get an "access denied" error, then computer undoes the changes and restarts leaving me with the MSI 3.1.

What would cause my system to not allow for the MSI 4.5 version to replace the 3.1, This is leaving me unable to install my recent software purchase.

Try reinstalling the Office package, restart, un-install from add/remove, restart then open Internet Explorer.

I read up on not being able to run the windows install cleaner and tried to end one of the two msexec processes from the task manager. this was a bad idea as it caused me to have another message about spss 15 trying to install every couple of seconds in addition to the windows installer. This is really frustrating. Unfortunately, I have a dissertation to write. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

when i try to install/uninstall, i get a message service could not be accessed.

i followed a link from here and have checked the location of the msiexec.exe file and the path/value is correct in the registry.

but i have 2 msiexec.exe files, 1 in w\sys32, the 3.1 version and 1 in w\spf\i386.

could having 2 files be part of the problem?

Ok Ive had this problem for about 2 weeks now.
Hardly anything will install without crashing. Im downloading what should be the correct installers of many things like java, shockwave and a lot more applications and they all crash within the first few stages within the installer and I get the error report thing. Same with AIM... It messes up 90% of the time I open it but it managed to install. MSN wont install either.
BUT ironicly. Every single VST and VSTi (theyre just plugins for music creation software... .ddls) Ive installed work - same with all my music apps.

One thing I tried was reinstalling windows installer. No luck - it did install but everything still messes up.

Im running XP SP2 on this machine simply because everything should work on it. Its the Professional 2002 version. I have 2GB of ram and a Q6600 quad core(this may be causing the problem, I dunno)

Thanks

After booting up and loading the desktop, icons, etc., I get a window that says Windows Installer is installing something, then configuring something called "Photogallery". While this is going on, I get another window saying something about Norton not supporting the repair function and to uninstall and reinstall. If I go to Norton, though, there appears to be nothing wrong with it.

Does anyone know what the heck this is about? I've tried a couple different programs to get rid of junk and fix the registry, hoping that would get rid of whatever it was, but it hasn't.

Your statements are confusing. Are you trying to install software with the programs' setup.exe file? What matrerial do you need to reformat?

Whenever I try to open Microsoft word or excel, or even when I run disk cleanup This box comes up entitled Windows Installer and the message inside of it says "Preparingt to Install"....This goes away after about 30 -45 seconds and the the stuff opens up....But it's a pain in the butt....I think it also does this for some other stuff too.

I haven't made any changes to the computer that I can remeber except running some anti-virus database updates.

I'm not too swift with computers and I can live with this if I have but DO I HAVE TO????

I reinstalled windows XP home edition with SP2 on my laptop and since then, the automatic update promts me to install Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.
I hit install and after trying to install it, it says it was unsuccesfull....

Do I need to install this update? And if so, HOW?

If I don't, how do I stop it from showing up on the automatic update?

A:Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 Won't Install

Hello,That is an interesting error. If automatic updates refuses to instal the file, you should try instaling it manually. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en this is a link to the windows instaler page. Also, to stop an update showing in your update list, simply expand the update in question by clicking the plus sign and select the check box saying a variation of exclude from future searches.

Hi,

We have a W2k server SP4. running Windows install (msi.dll - 3.1.4000.2435)

Something has happened that now prevents us running MSI installs. Basically nothing happens, no errors or anything in the event log except this when I have to manually kill the msiexec.exe

"The Windows Installer service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action. "
We've installed the latest windows installer, we've tried reinstalling sp4 but not luck.

any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Try this :

Quote:

Delete all temporary files.

a. Restart the computer.
b. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer, or double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
c. Click anywhere in the Address bar to select it. (If you do not see the Address bar, then right-click the blank area to the right of Help. On the menu that appears, click Address bar.)
d. Type %temp% and then press Enter:
e. The Temp folder for the currently logged-on user displays.
f. In most cases, you can safely delete the contents. If you are not sure, then copy any files or folders to a different location. To delete the contents, click the Edit menu, and then click Select All.
g. Press Delete, and then click Yes if prompted to confirm.

See if it helps.

Hello,
(Win 7 64, IE9)
Installed the latest version of flash player (11.5.502.135) and all went well.
But when I go to some sites, I keep getting the install window anew.
I refuse the installation and have no problem on the sites.
But this is getting a real pain.
I removed Flash and installed again... got the "successful install" message.
And still, now and then, I get the install window popping up on my screen
What can I do ??????

A:Flash Player 11 keeps wanting to re-install !

Hi icacream,

Please follow the steps listed below:
- Open a 'flash video' (Youtube)
- Right-click and select 'Settings'
- Click 'Advanced'
- Click 'Global Notifications Settings' on the left
- Un-check the box for 'Notify me when an update to Adobe Flash Player is available'
- Close the window to save settings

You may also use the 'Global Notification Settings Panel' to configure the updates: Adobe - Flash Player : Settings Manager - Global Notifications Settings Panel

More useful information about 'Updating Flash Player': Adobe - Flash Player : Help - About Updating Adobe Flash Player

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions; would be glad to assist.

Hi there,

Whenever a guest logs onto my laptop, I get an installation error message that says it wants to install Vongo (I uninstalled it from my computer using my own login) and cannot find the Vongo.msi file. I cancel the message and it keeps reappearing.

How can I fix this please?

Thanks,
Lynne

Whenever I open up my outlook program Microsoft XP with FrontPage comes up trying to install. I have to hit cancel several times. It does this every time I want to send or receive email as well.

A:Microsoft XP with frontpage keeps wanting to install.

That means it could be missing a file/folder or have a currupt file/folder let it run, normally it will not ask for the disk but if it does just put the disk in.

This should only happen once.

Here is the situation. I was going to upgrade my wifes Gateway to w2000 as a surprise, kept getting NTDETECT failed error. Before I could work it out or find a solution, she caught me. Lesson learned, Dont mess with wifes computer when she is not here. replaced ME on her computer and reinstalled all of the backups I had made before I had this brilliant Idea. Problem, I have a $200 system that I am dying to install on something. I have a dual hd each 40g and I have nothing on the Drive D. I have XP home on C: drive. I would like to install this W2000 on the D Drive. can someone tell me Is there a way to reformat Just D: drive and install w2000 on it without messing up C: drive. and then being able to pick which OS I want to boot to? This is by the way a Full system CD.

A:Wanting to install Linux SUSE 10 thats out now, but have ?'s

The SuSE installer contains its own partitioning utility, no need for fdisk. SuSE 9.3 had the ability to resize Windows partitions, so I'd think SuSE 10 can do that too.
I always use a dedicated partitioning utility though - have had a couple of times when the Linux installer screwed up the partition table.

No need to make the CDs. The DVD is bootable.

If Toshiba has a driver for it for your OS and your model PC then you can be pretty confident that the adapter will work. If that is not that case there is no way of telling, at least for me, whether it will work fine, sorta work, not work at all, or even if the BIOS will let the laptop boot with the card installed.

Hi Guys I'm having a problem with I guess is the latest updates for XP update kb954430 from MS. It happends when I click the yellow shield it installs ansd a few moments later the shield reappears asking to reinstall it when I have just installed it. Also when I reboot it it is coming up New Hardware Found I don't know if this is to do with the same problem... I do know that nonew hardware has been put in for years so, why does this update keep wanting to be installed. I have installed it 7 times, it shows it was successful. I ran the malicious software tool and everything came out clean. How do I stop this update from installing over and over again? I have Windows XP. It is doing it on both my computers. I am ready to turn off automatic updates.

I still would like to have Outlook installed but I don't know how to do so.
Thanks.

A:How can I stop windows installer at start-up and install Windows Outlook on my comput

Hey, see if windows installer is in your startup entries:

- Open the start menu
- Type "msconfig.exe" in the search bar
- Press enter to open msconfig
- Goto the startup tab
- Look through these entries for "windows installer" or the path to windows installer
- If you find it:
> uncheck the box next to it
> click ok and restart to check
- If not:
> Post back and i'll do some reading into it

Cheers,
Jamey

A:Windows installer issue - Cannot install updates

I note that you have sought help, over the past couple of days, in five different locations about this problem. [ Vista installation & set up, software, general discussion, & Win updates. ] One area is sufficient.

Try a Google search initially on error 80070641

A:Windows Installer service CANNOT INSTALL JACK! x64

Since you have, as you played with the registery, who knows what is going to happen.

Are the things you want to install 64bit compatible ?

"Playing" in the registry is like playing in a mine field- you will loose something.

I believe someone playing with my PC erased an important file. System restore will not work, although all my restore points are there. Add\remove programs has disappeared from programs as well as a number of programs are not functioning. I can access the internet OK.

Windows update says Windows installer 3.1 needs to be installed. When I proceed with the install, I keep getting the following error message.
The file c:\windows\system32\msi.dll is open or in use by another application. I have tried to find out what is running or being used by this application and I can not find or figure it out.

When my friend goes to install any software, he generally sees a message saying it is starting the Windows Installer, then a popup appears (attached) from Windows Installer that offers on option other than OK. Clicking OK just makes the popup go away, the install does not continue. I tried the install as administrator, did not help. I tried the compatibility troubleshooter, but it errors out without giving any info.

I've tried running the Microsoft tool that they offer for repairing Windows Installer, it finds nothing. I've also tried unregistering and registering msiexec.exe, did not help. Also ran regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\msi.dll

Any ideas what I might try to fix this?

Thanks

A:Cannot install any software - Windows installer popup

Version 5, is that right?

I say it's time for an In-Place Install.

Also, check for Sirefef, it interferes with EXEs. It specifically disables EXEs so you cant install any AV programs so it may be interfering with the installer.

Do the programs that are there run? You can do a quick test for Sirefef- Rename your Windows Defender folder to Windows Defender Old. then try the installer again.

If that dont work, then dig out your Install disk, you gotta do an In-Place Install. But try an SFC /Scannow a few times, and then a DISM to rebuild the windows image, sorry, cant remember the command line - Its in the tutorials, I'll find it.

Here it is:

DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8

Logged on a Windows 2000 SP4 workstation as Administrator (either domain or local) I get the following error message when initiating setup of the MS Windows Installer 3.0 (or 3.1):

Setup Error:
You do not have permission to update Windows 2000. Pls contact your system administrator.

Downloaded from MS site: WindowsInstaller-KB884016-v2-x86.exe
MS documentation indicates that it is supported by Windows 2000 sp4.

Can anyone help?
Thanks in advanced.

A:Solved: Can't install Windows Installer 3.0 as Administrator

Logging in as Administrator in a domain does not necessarily mean that you have permissions to install software.

Hello,

I have a problem that windows trys to install a missing program named Vongo. How do i remove this auto install at startup. Vongo is not needed on my computer.

A:Windows Installer Problem...keeps Trying To Install Vongo

Do you happen to have an HP computer? Apparently Vongo is preloaded on to some HP laptops. (at least all the references I found mentioned laptops)According to Wikipedia "Vongo is a video on demand service, owned by Liberty Media's Starz Entertainment, parent company of the Starz network, that allows the user to download and view movies for a fixed price per month."A quick search for removal of Vongo took me to cnet.com forums where there are 65 posts about Vongo. Apparently there are a lot of people who are unhappy about this being included on their systems. It seems that it's a bear to get rid of, going through Add/Remove to uninstall doesn't work. Here is the link to the cnet forum, you might find something there that will work for you.http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7587_102-0.htm...78&start=60
