Can't find Local Settings file in Windows Explorer

Q: Can't find Local Settings file in Windows Explorer

Hi
Using Windows XP Home.
I am logged on as the administrator, as usual.
Recently, I can't find the "Local Settings" folder in its usual place, that is, in C:\Documents and Settings\my name\ (where I could always see it before now).
However, I can find it by using Search in Windows Explorer, and can then open the folder, and sub-folders and files from there.
Can anyone explain why the folder doesn't show in the normal Explorer view, and how I can get it back?
Thank you

Preferred Solution: Can't find Local Settings file in Windows Explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Maybe the folder was accidentally moved. When you search for the folder using Explorer's Search function what path does it give?

I realize there are many posts on this issue When I click a Word document in Windows Explorer find name from path\file Windows cannot Windows opening when Explorer file I get the message quot Windows cannot open the file path name make sure etc quot Word opens but file does not With Word open clicking brings up another instance of Word without file and same error Same Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer as other posts on this Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer issue Issue does not occur with any other files Excel PowerPoint Access Acrobat etc Happens with only Word extensions docx etc If I open Word and open the file from inside Word all is fine I tried saving documents in different Word extensions saving to different locations but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop I have repaired Office Ultimate Version uninstalled Word reinstalled Word tried the registry fix posted here and MS site removing Data reg entry under Word Used tool posted here to unassociate reassociate docs with Word I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago but apparently it started before that because I still get the same error I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried but these are the ones that come to mind It is a three-week-old Dell laptop -bit Vista Not impossible to live with but has me stumped According to all the posts in networld and here fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution If anyone knows of new tips I'd sure appreciate it

A:Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer

Error is "cannot find (path\name)...before someone yells. Also, thorough scan for malicious software, trojans, etc. Do not have BSPlayer, whatever that is. Also, if I search for the document in the menu, I can't open it from there either.

Lately, I have been getting a Windows Internet Explorer message at computer start up...
"Cannot find 'file:///'. Make sure the path or internet address is correct".
This is not causing any problems that I can see so far after I close the message window but it is annoying to me to see this at every start up of my computer.
I have Windows XP Professional, SP3 on my PC. Could somebody help me to get rid of this message? Thank you.

A:Owner/Local Settings/Temp Folder - Unknown File

Some files are locked by the operating system or locked by running programs during use for protection, so scanners cannot access them. Files that are located in password-protected archives may also be locked or denied access. When the scanner finds such a file, it makes a note and then just skips to the next one. That explains why it shows as "skipped" or "Access Denied" in some anti-virus or anti-malware log scan reports. Similarly, when attempting to delete such a file manually, you may receive a message indicating it is in use or a warning that it is a protected. For more information about this, please refer to How to Delete/Rename a Stubborn File. Several utilities are suggested for dealing with stubborn files to include Unlocker. Please download Unlocker and save to your desktop.Choose the default installation folder C:\Programs Files\Unlocker, click "Next" then click "Install" and reboot when finished.Navigate to the file or folder you want to delete.Right-click on it and select "Unlocker" from the menu.If the folder or file is locked, a window listing of lockers will open.Click to highlight the file path and choose "Unlock all". (make sure "no action" is chosen in the program)After you unlock it, right-click on the file and choose delete.Note: When you are unsure about a suspicious or unknown file, you can rename it by adding .vir after the file's extension (i.e. badfile.dll.vir). If you receive an alert from Windows about renaming, just ignore it. I prefer renaming instead of deleting as deletion leaves you with no option to restore if the file is later found to be legitimate. Taking no action exposes you to risk if the file is not legitimate.

The last 4 or 5 days I've been getting the attached message from NOD32. Finally got round to looking at it this morning. When I try to delete the file, NOD32 comes up "Error when deleting".

I did a search for the fie on my hard drive and I found it, but again when trying to delete straight from the source folder it it said "file not found".

I should have thought to have done a screen print of the properties box but I didn't. However, looking at the location - appdata/local/...8EE38d01 it appears this is a Firefox profile file.

Ever since it's shown up I seem to be having problems with the wifi on the laptop, I don't know if this is causing it or whether that's a new problem entirely!

Thought I'd drop a post here in case anyone's come across this before.

A:NOD32 finds threat in file I cannot find - Appdata/Local

wittykitty,

You can get rid of it by using Windows Defender Offline.
Windows Defender Offline runs without Win 7 running.

Follow this procedure:
HOW TO USE WINDOWS DEFENDER OFFLINE ON A USB STICK
Windows Defender Offline
? is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.
? performs an offline scan of an infected PC to remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware.

Download Windows Defender Offline (about 764 kB)

You will have the choice of downloading the 32bit version (x86) or the 64 bit version (x64).
The link will help you determine whether you are running a 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Windows

NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 32 bit version using a 64 bit version of Windows
NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 64 bit version using a 32bit version of Windows.

You run the 32 bit version on a 32 bit version of Windows.
You run the 64 bit version on a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 32 bit download file name is: mssstool32.exe
The 64 bit download file name is: mssstool64.exe

For the curious, this program was originally name Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

INSTALLATION:
You will need an Internet Connection.
Insert 512 mB (Microsoft?s 256 mB is no longer accurate) or larger USB stick into a usb port.
Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
NEXT button
Choose the option On a USB flash drive that is not password protected
NEXT button
NEXT button
.
The install program will format the usb stick using the NTFS format.
The install program will download about 210 mB.
The install program will name the USB stick WDO_Media32 or WDO_Media64
The WDO_Media32 usb stick will have used space of 255 mB (268,140,544 bytes)
The WDO_Media64 usb stick will have used space of 282 mB (296,165,376 bytes)
You can expect the number of mB to increase as more malware appears.

UPDATE Windows Defender Offline USB stick:
? reinsert the usb stick
? run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.
? the update will download about 66 mB (mssstool32.exe) and 68 mB (mssstool64.exe).

Since the malware database is sometimes updated several times in a day, always update before running.

PERFORM AN OFFLINE SCAN
Bootup your computer from the USB stick
Windows Defender Offline will automatically perform a quick scan.
After the quick scan finishes, Choose Full Scan
Select all of your drives

The initial, full scan can easily take several hours, but
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.

RESULTS OF THE SCAN
The results will be in 4 log files on your computer's disk in:
\Windows\Microsoft Antimalware\Support

===============================================

After running wdo and booting your computer up normally,
then carry out following which will put a .ZIP file on your desktop. Upload that .ZIP file please.

Hi all,
Using XP home edition, I'm trying to tweak my Chrome browser so I went looking for the installation folder. The properties dialogue in the shortcut tells me it's in "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe".

The problem is that I cannot find this folder. When I go to my D&S folder and open my "Owner" folder, there is no "Local Settings" folder. I have my system set up to show all folders, including hidden and system folders, so I know that isn't the problem.

I'm flummoxed. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello I'm currently in the process of testing deploying IE in setup XML - file File Local Enterprise Local List Network, IE11 Manager or HTTP, Site our environment and I've begun testing on the IE Enterprise Site List manager I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO IE11 Enterprise Site List Manager XML file setup - HTTP, Local Network, or Local File per the article below nbsp HTTP Local Network Local File https technet microsoft com en-us library Dn aspx In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file and I was curious what the best options are and why nbsp Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits downsides to each Here's the options that I can see using HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file Local Network UNC - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package application when updates to the list are required Could anyone please point me towards some articles etc explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other nbsp I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option because it doesn't require us to maintain an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method or benefits to going with another method Thanks

Had a horrible problem with malware which bleepingcomputer helped me with. (thank you) At that time, several profiles were "lost." Got everything back and it worked well for several weeks. Then got the message again that the local profile could not be found/located; loading temporary profile. I used system recovery and went back to the good date I had following the major clean up. All is restored, until a few weeks later. Been playing this game and I'm tired of it. (I'm at home again, so I can work on problem.) What causes this to happen and how can I stop it? Also, using winPatrol and keep getting messages about QuickTime wanting to install something at startup. Been check no, but it gets very aggravating for son and husband as it pops up more than it does on my profile.

Thanks!

Tami Greene

A:"Windows cannot find local profile. . . "

IME...anytime a temporary profile is used...that's an indication that the standard profile is damaged.

In such cases, I would create a new profile and move the settings/files from the damaged profile...to the newly created one and then delete the old one.

As to why a profile becomes damaged...any file can become damaged at any time, IMO.

Re Quicktime...I suggest uninstalling it (it's one of my least favorite programs). If you must install/use it...then I suggest that you pay attention to all the options that you enable by default when installing it. Due to lack of info provided, I can't suggest more than that.

You may want to become a member of the QT forum, http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=122 .

I have never had a problem logging on before yesterday. The problem is still there,I am still being logged on with a temporary profile, which seems to be the same as starting all over again.I have lost most of my desktop icons ,all my documents and pictures are gone and I need to search out them from somewhere. Then the folders are still there but the documents were lost. There isn't any net connection in my computer and don't connect any external devices like pendrive. Why this happened? How can get my documents as previous in my desktop. Please give me suggestion.

A:Windows can't find the local profile.....

Your profile became corrupted. So, Windows created a temporary user profile for you. Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Create a new user profile with admin rights. Log out of the temp user you are in and log in as the new user. Now go to C:\Documents and Settings here you will have the user profile your in be branched out. You will also see the Administrator profile and your old user profile. Open your old user profile and copy the My Documents, Favorites and Desktop folders and paste them into your new profile overwriting the empty files that are in there now. You may need to Take Ownership of the Folder. Then just log in as the new user from now on.
As for your other issues like net connectivity, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, do you see any yellow marks next to devices? If so, you will need to install a driver for these devices from your computer manufacturers support/download drivers site.

Hi, my daughter has a laptop with Windows XP Professional, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express for emails. Yesterday it was fine and today it isn't! When we switch on the computer we get a pop-up window that says "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off".
Everything appears to be gone, the screen saver is just a generic green hills, All short cuts are gone, Outlook express is empty and other things she had like msn is gone.

Why would it not be about "find the local profile"? and is there anything we can do to get it back to normal?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hi Welcome to TSG!!

If you log on as administrator you should be able to delete everything in the C:\Documents and Settings\owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder.

If you sign in as "owner" you should be able to remove everything except index.dat if you close all of your browser windows.

I have a problem, when I save a file the program I used for saving can find those files, but when I try to access file through explorer or other program the file doesn't show up where it should. Please Help!

A:Why can't I find my file with explorer?

When saving the files, are you navigating to a folder to save to or are you allowing the application to save to wherever it wants? usually My Documents. Check the My Documents (Documents) folder. Some applications such as MS Word\Excel (2013 onwards) will show you the path of the documents. What applications are you using?I tend to save everything to desktop while I work on it, then file it away once im done. This way I can very quickly find the document as soon as I login to Windows.message edited by AlwaysWillingToLearn

Over the weekend did something to my computer!! Computer is an HP approx. 5 years old. When trying to access Internet Explorer it says: file:///C:/Program%20Files/AOL%20Toolbar/welcome.html Make sure path or Internet address is correct. If I click OK it'll bring up IE screen and show the same message again. I click OK again and then click on "home" picture. IE will then bring up the home page it's set to. Suggestions on what I did or need to do is appreciated. IE was working before just fine.

I've quite some Windows machines in my home network running XP Professional, Win7 Professional, Premium and Starter. Since about two weeks, EVERY system is complaining occasionally about local profiles that cannot be found after switching user (or on Starter, logging off and logging on to another user). The exact message is 'Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile'. Only by rebooting I'm able to get into my original profile.

Since I have seen this multiple times on XP, Win7 Starter and Win7 Professional, and only since about two weeks, this rather points to some 'fix' that I received with Windows Update. At least I can not imagine another reason. Does anyone have this problem too?

Hi I'm new to Vista and a few things view with Vista explorer settings Issues file are bothering me at the moment If I set my current folder to quot list quot view and then go and quot apply current settings to all folders quot in XP this would do just that put every single folder on all my disks in quot list view quot by default Unfortunately Vista still seems to try to display what it considers quot media folders quot as quot tile view quot until I manually change each one to quot list quot view Do Issues with Vista file explorer view settings I have any way to set them all to list as I intend When I turn on the quot status bar quot in flie explorer it does indeed show the Issues with Vista file explorer view settings status bar and if I click on a file it will show the size of that file in the status bar In XP however if no file was selected it would show the combined size of all the files in the folder and if I selected a specific group of files it would also show their combined filesize Neither of these seem to show up on the status bar in Vista Is there any way to prevent folders from quot lighting up quot as you move the mouse over them I would call this quot pre-select highlight quot after a similarly named and similarly disliked feature in a CAD program I use This one is kind of stupid but sometimes due to all my external drives I like to have a long tall but narrow vertical window where the folder names just fill up the width If I scroll down the list and either delete or rename something the whole list apparently disappears but it has actually just scrolled off the screen somehow even though there is no scrollbar present A simple F will fix things but this still sucks Thanks

Unfortunately, Vista still seems to try to display what it considers "media folders" as "tile view" until I manually change each one to "list" view. Do I have any way to set them all to list as I intend?

2) When I turn on the "status bar" in flie explorer, it does indeed show the status bar, and if I click on a file it will show the size of that file in the status bar. In XP however, if no file was selected it would show the combined size of all the files in the folder, and if I selected a specific group of files it would also show their combined filesize. Neither of these seem to show up on the status bar in Vista.

3) Is there any way to prevent folders from "lighting up" as you move the mouse over them? I would call this "pre-select highlight" after a similarly named (and similarly disliked) feature in a CAD program I use.

4) This one is kind of stupid, but sometimes due to all my external drives, I like to have a long (tall) but narrow vertical window, where the folder names just fill up the width. If I scroll down the list and either delete or rename something, the whole list apparently disappears, but it has actually just scrolled off the screen somehow, even though there is no scrollbar present. A simple F5 will fix things but this still sucks.

Hi The111,

Here is some info that should help:
Windows Explorer - Folder Type Templates
Windows Explorer Folder View settings

As for not getting the display for multiple file selection size, it is showing the size of a multiple selection, but not the size of all when none is selected. To get that I hit Ctrl+A to select all the files.

Hope this helps you out.

Hello raymanu and welcome to TSF,

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

*************************************************************

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

Install AVG Anti Spyware
Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
On the top of the main screen click Shield
Click the word active to change it to inactive
On the top of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64).

*************************************************************

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot into Normal Windows.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

A:Local disks on windows explorer

I'm guessing you have a Dell.
I just had almost the same thing happen. I have a clone of my main drive installed, and the diagnostics and recovery partitions on it suddenly were assigned drive letters (I don't have MediaDirect). But only on the Clone drive, not the main drive.

To get rid of them, close all windows, then:
Right click My Computer
Click Manage
Click Disk Management
Right click each of the "new" drives and click Change Drive Letter and Paths...
With the drive letter highlighted, click Remove.
Repeat for the other two "new" drives.

i ws installing adb foe windows and used following steps
There's two simple ways to get there:
1 way = click Start > Control Panel > System icon.
2nd way = click the Start button, right-click ?My Computer?(Computer for Vista/7) and select ?Properties?.
If your using XP, your there. If your using Vista/7, click on Advanced system settings on the left side.

You should now be in the System Properties window.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Click on the Evironment Variables... button
In the System variables(lower box), scroll through the list until you see Path under the Variable column.
Click on it to highlite it, click on the Edit... button.

We are going to add our path to adb, where we installed the SDK, in the Variable value: box.
Make sure your cursor is at the end of the last entry, and type this:

;C:\android\tools\
Now unable to access system files and othes.

I wish to turn off Autocorrect throughout my device, and I tried to follow Windows 10 tutorials to do so. They all indicate that you should go to Settings > Devices > Typing, but my Devices menu does not include a Typing option (it is otherwise identical to the menu shown in screenshots in those tutorials.) I can't find anything similar by searching Settings either. Any ideas what I could do? Thanks :)

I tried the recommendations for fixing this below:

Follow these steps to grant full permissions to the folder where the files are stored: 1. Right click on the folder on the external drive and click on
properties. 2. On the property window, click Security tab.
3. Now click on Edit and then click Add.
4. Now type everyone in the box and
click OK.

5. Then check Full control check box.

6. Click on Apply and then click OK.
You may also try the below mentioned steps:
1. Click on Start. 2. Go to Control Panel. 3. Select "SOUND". 4. Double click on speakers. 5. Click on advanced tab and then uncheck enable audio enhancements.

But then I received the error message that I don't have rights to edit and add.  Why would this be?  I am the administrator?

Thanks!

In Windows Explorer, there's an extra local hard disk (E:\) which doesn't appear in Disk Management. It's about 500MB in size and 3/4 full. If I look at the properties, the name of the phantom disk is the same as the real physical disk (C:\). However, I don't know how to get rid of it, or remove the drive letter. I've attached a picture to help explain.

Thank you,

HI All,
We have set up three users in a home network where one person holds all the files on their PC and that folder is shared for access to everyone.  It is a remote location so no need to have it too locked down.  I haven't created a homegroup but can
if that changes things.  the issue is that at the moment two people can open the same file at the same time without any message about the file already being in use - then the rule of "last person to save the file" wins.  Is there any way
- by settings on the PC, or by using homegroup instead, or by using a third party tool - to prevent this from happening?
Thanks,
JJ

Hi,

Looking for advice on how to find where the touch pad settings may be hidden on this laptop I'm working on? I've looked in the control panel and there is no icon for touch pad and I've looked in the mouse settings without finding any options to change the settings for the touch pad? The laptop is an acer Aspire 5520-5912 running Vista Home Premium Service pack 2. Any ideas?

A:Can't find touch pad settings in Control Panel/Mouse settings anywhere?

Hi loki2007 Usually, Windows install it's own Microsoft Legacy Drivers for a touchpad on a laptop, and these drivers doesn't enable the "Advanced" settings that allows you to control the touchpad. In order to do that, you have to install the laptop touchpad drivers which will add that tab in the Mouse options.Download and install these drivers:http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/TouchPad/Touchpad_Synaptics_9.1.16_Vistax86.zip?acerid=633639058794305220&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%205520&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_4Let me know if they install or not.

First off local the "Windows you then and is the profile." cannot cannot find logging "Windows load on... profile stored locally I d like to thank you very much for even opening this thread I greatly appreciate the help The following error message only occurs after someone has been logged onto the computer on their account for an extended period of time I think it s "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on... about or hours and over but I have no way of being sure A few months ago I "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on... got a pretty bad virus infection I cleaned it all "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on... up and the system ran but had some errors going on with windows I then bought an external hard drive So I re-formatted and re-installed windows XP Then I found this error message after logging off of my user and then having my brother try to log onto his user profile There are user profiles on this computer and only one of them has administrative rights at the moment Windows cannot load the locally stored profile Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile If the problem persists contact your network administrator Followed by Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off So it only occurs when someone has been logged on for over hours and then tries to log onto another person s profile it doesn t affect only one profle but usually affects all profiles but the one that was logged into for over hours I have tried running chkdsk it comes up with no problems I ve tried running SFC exe SCANNOW but it always around the end after fixing a few problems with the Dell re-installation DVD asks me to insert windows xp CD which I don t have I only have disc that has to do with windows XP the other discs are drivers and software I am pretty annoyed with this I have tried deleting and re-making the user profiles Over the past little while I ve done several re-formatting and re-installations to see if it was just a bad windows XP installation No luck I m starting to form theories - the virus damaged some hardware and my system is having trouble maintaining windows XP- The virus is still here even after the re-format and re-installations and is causing problems But I never had this problem after removing the viruses only after reinstalling - My Re-installation disc is damaged or had some corrupted files It is from afterall right Please this is the biggest annoyance I ve had to date Is there anything I can do I ve run so many virus scans that I ve been driving myself insane over the past few months Please BC community I really need you guys Thanks so much in advance Edit I forgot to add that the problem is fixed simply by restarting the computer The only reason this is a problem is because when it logs you into the temporary account none of your files are there none of your bookmarks etc And restarting the computer takes much longer than simply logging off and logging into another side

A:"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on...

This problem is more serious than you think...since eventually user access could be denied.

Damaged profiles occur routinely...they beoome showstoppers only because users ignore the warnings that are provided...by permitting access via temporary profiles.

Users need to create a new profile...and then transfer settings, etc. from the damaged to the new...in order to overcome a damaged profile.

I recently bought a new Dell Studio notebook with Windows Home Premium and transferred across several hundred documents from my old PC into the new My Documents folder As many others have found Windows Search has been completely useless It seems to have no problem finding files in the Music or Pictures folder yet anything in the Documents library is invisible to it - even if I search within a small subfolder for a filename I can see right in front of me Windows Search will announce that No items match your search I ve taken a number of steps so far to correct the problem none of which have worked I ve checked which locations are indexed for searching and ensured that the documents library is amongst been settings have fails after to files, even checked Windows 7 all Search find them along with the whole of my C drive I ve checked that the relevant file extensions doc docx pdf etc are all selected in the list of File Types within the Indexing options although I notice that Filter Description for pdf reads Registered IFilert is not found - no such problem with the Word docs I ve deleted and rebuilt the search index I ve run the Windows Search troubleshooter which reports that it can t find any problems I ve read that some problems with Windows Search can be fixed by editing a registry key http www intowindows com how-to-fix-windows- -search-problems but when I navigate to the relevant folder in my registry only the following three keys are there not the one mentioned in the fix - HKEY CURRENT USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer FolderTypes B BAAEB- - DCA-AA D- EE D E - HKEY CURRENT USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer FolderTypes -DCCC- FE-AA D- EA - Windows 7 Search fails to find files, even after all settings have been checked HKEY CURRENT USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer FolderTypes BD DD - CEC- D E- AD -ECC D A couple of things I ve noted - if I create a new word doc and save it Windows Search seems to instantly pick up on it and is able to find it I also noted that initially when I opened one of the word docs that were transferred over from the old PC and then closed it again Windows Search picked up on it and could find it So I went about trying to open and then close all my documents a laborious task but about halfway through Windows Search stopped being able to find them All the Word Docs are using Microsoft Word in either doc or docx format although the problem also applies to Excel PDF and image files so I don t think the issue is with Word itself I ve tried everything I can think of so far including all the solutions I could see suggested in previous threads I really need the search function working to use my laptop efficiently so any help would be gratefully received Thanks Jack nbsp

No matter how many times I reset file explorer in Windows 10, browsing through folder will open multiple windows and not keep the same windows at all. WTF? Is it this hard to get a basic god damn app to behave normally? Browsing through my D$ drive will spawn multiple windows. Or browsing through C$ will open the same window for the first folder then pop open a new window for anything else.

Anyone else having this issue? Any fix? Restoring defaults does nothing. I just want to keep the same window open for everything. I don't want to have multiple instances of file explorer windows while browsing. There used to be a target shortcut you could place in the shortcut of file explorer that would help out with this. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

tried ProcMon, the events captured are enormous even after I filtered out those I am sure do not matter.  It was hard to spot what went wrong if I don't know what to look for.

Which is why I made the suggestion to filter coarsely and wait for a divergence in your two nearly equivalent traces.   <eg>
Otherwise, if you are only looking at one trace but think that there is a possibility that some diagnostics may have been written, filtering with
Operation Is WriteFile  is often very handy.  With that filter you can also use the Count occurrences... tool for the number of distinct  Path  values which were involved.
In fact, now that I have reviewed the symptom description, filtering coarsely might also mean using only the File Access events and filtering with  Path Contains Fav   Do that with each of your traces and see where there is a divergence.
Then turn the filter off at that point or perhaps just add Registry events at that point (e.g. use the button but leave your filter for  Path in place).  Etc.

Good luck

Many years ago my husband's window explorer display was set up so that all the contents of a root folder were displayed. Now he wants to go back to a display where only the most frequently used programs from those folders are displayed but I've forgotten how to do that.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

When I use internet explorer, 125% zoom is the best choise for me

When I open IE8, the zoom is 100%. I then change it to 125%. Next page I open is often 100% and sometimes 125%. This is randomly.

Ive also tried to change it in regedit, but it doesnt help.

Ive read other threads about this issue, but these threads were started a while ago. Maybe there is some new solutions.

I just installed service pack 2, and I guess the issue appeared after the installation

Someone knows how to get the zoom to stay at 125% permanently?

First let me describe the problem All of my Windows Explorer settings changed settings be Explorer Windows can't appear to be stuck at the defaults If I go to Tools Windows Explorer settings can't be changed gt Folder options and change them the change does not take effect and if I open the menu again the check boxes are back to the same state as before When I right-click in empty space my New menu is empty Also if I try to drag a shortcut to the taskbar or pin an item to the start menu nothing happens Now this all started after removing a piece of beta software Windows Explorer settings can't be changed being developed at my employer using the add remove programs list Windows Explorer settings can't be changed my mistake It apparently corrupted the registry causing a bluescreen at boot I let the system do the auto repair which got me able to boot again but with the problems noted above My next action was to try System Restore to bring me back to a state a few days back Unfortunately the restore failed and upon going back into System Restore I found all of my restore points had disappeared I next exited Windows and replaced after making backups DEFAULT SAM SECURITY SOFTWARE and SYSTEM in Windows System config with the copies in RegBack After rebooting this did not seem to change anything Any ideas about how I might still get my old settings back or at least be able to change them again I was hoping to avoid reinstalling Windows

A:Windows Explorer settings can't be changed

One important question: If I have resized my disk partitions since I made a System Image with the backup utility in Windows, will I still be able to use the image?

The native image creation tool was Microsoft's first stab at such a facility. The good news is that it's free. The bad news is that it is temperamental, unreliable and that it lacks the functionality that we take for granted with similar but mature products.
Example: it will not restore partitions where the target is smaller than the original partition. But give it a try anyway - I might be wrong.

Hello, all...

I'm having a strange problem...
My windows settings, such as my taskbar position, toolbars....etc. aren't being saved...

I have all the latest updates, for everything, I run winXP (home), Graphics: Intel 8485G/GL/GE/PE/GV.

I've also run a virus scan (Avast!), and adware/spyware scans ( Both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware), returned no results.

I am also an administrator, incidentally, this problem is only on my user account... as the other 2 user accounts register changes just fine.

Any and all help, or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

A:Windows Explorer Settings not being saved....

delete these registry keys (they will be recreated on rebooting) and your settings should stay put for you.

HKCU_ software\microsoft\windows\shellnoroam\bagmru

and the one next to it
HKCU _software\microsoft\windows\shellnoroam\bags
delete both and reboot, test your settings.

These are where all your personal touches are saved but are notorious for failing in their duty, deleting them forces a recreate next boot with default values, now changes you make will stick thereafter.

Is there any way to prevent the 'view' setting in Win 7 from being global and changing every folder in the computer. I have three win 7 machines and they all do it. And why did 'thumbnails' become 'icons'??

A:windows explorer view settings

Hello Ridgerunner,

Are you by chance in a library instead of an actual folder location?

All included folders in a library will share the same folder view.

Only while in the actual folder location will they have separate folder views.

For example, Music library versus "C:\Users\(user-name)\My Music" folder.

Could you give more details about what you mean for thumbnails becoming icons? A screenshot showing this would be best.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Hello,

I want to change the settings of Windows explorer to open in a specific folder. I can do this for the shortcut under Programs>Accessories> Windows Explorer.

But doing so does not affect the settings of Windows Explorer when I invoke it with the keyboard shortcut : "Windows-Key + E"

Amit.

A:Change settings for Windows Explorer

no it wont because the keyboard shortcut opens explorer directly it doesnt go through the shortcut route you have edited. Im assuming windows has its own macro for this combination i have no idea how you would edit it , maybe somebody else could help

i think you will be able to do it with third party software like auto hotkey and then write your own macro , although i think you'll probably have to map it to a differant key combination

I don't know if this has been asked before but I searched and couldn't find anything. After performing some Windows XP updates recently I've discovered that Windows Explorer won't remember the settings from a previous session. The window opens up minimized, the folders sometimes have the large icons rather than the Details that I prefer. I've gone through the various view settings and tried different things and nothing seems to work. I'm sure there is some simple thing that I am overlooking but I've gone through the settings again and again. Any help is greatly appreciated.

So every time I log into any other machine on our network it stores a local copy of my Roaming user Profile on the machine. This is OK for most users, but i Have to log into multiple machines every day, and every once and a while I'll log into a machine with old settings, and it will override my account. This becomes a pain when i log back into my regular machine, and all of my settings have been changed. What I need is to stop it from saving a cached copy of my profile every time I log into another machine. How would I go about doing that?

Hi Tarkuz,as mentioned in the chat, I'm taking a look at the log. c:\users\tarkus\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\startup\09eb99c455680f440c477dff1bede754.exeLet's see what that weird file is, can you please upload it to www.virustotal.com and give me the link for the results.regardsmyrti

A:.tmp file at USER/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Windows/System32 (passwords, chats)

Hi,given the resutls from virustotal, I would recommend running Malwarebytes next:Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Important!! When you save the mbam-setup file, rename it to something random (such as 123abc.exe) before beginning the download.Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the renamed file to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue. If you cannot update Malwarebytes or use the Internet to download any files to the infected computer, manually update the database by following the instructions in FAQ Section A: 4. Issues.Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.Click on the Scan button. When the scan is complete, click OK, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.Exit Malwarebytes when done.Note: If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.-- Some types of malware will target Malwarebytes and other security tools to keep them from running properly. If that's the case, use Malwarebytes Chameleon and follow the onscreen instructions. The Chameleon folder can be accessed by opening the program folder for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (normally C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware).regradsmyrti

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

I don't care how many times I set my Windows Explorer viewing settings to Name, Ascending I have files that move around in the window. I'm getting real sick of having to either use F5 or back out of the folder and come back in. Just because I open a file doesn't mean it should move to the end of the list. That's what is happening though. Every single one of these files was created exactly the same way but not all of them do it. And not all of the files moving are the same ones every time. It's only occasion files that move and not always the same files, it seems to be random.

I just know this is getting to be extremely irritating. So if anyone can tell me how to lock in my viewing preferences and keep them that way I would greatly appreciate it.

A:Windows Explorer Notification is not remembering settings

If it is no longer plugged into a USB port and you are still getting that notification, you may be able to get rid of it by going into device manager and deleting the hidden profile. So, to view profiles that are not active, you must select View then select Hidden profiles. Once done, you will see many devices displayed that are greyed-out which indicates they are not active. Find the one you think may be causing the issue and delete it. No guarantees but this was the first thing that came to my mind. Good luck.

Hi

I'm trying to manage my bandwidth allowance from my (mobile wireless broadband) ISP.

I want to use Adobe Flash Player but need to guard against unwanted bandwidth use through peer-assisted-networking.

I note the following on the Flash Player Help page: 'Beginning with Flash Player 10.3, the "Local Settings Manager" supersedes th(e) Online Settings Manager for managing global settings on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. "The Local Settings Manager" can be accessed in the Control Panel on Windows ...'

I can't find anything called a "Local Settings Manager" by searching Win 7/Control panel.

Anyone know the Win 7 title for this (obviously generic) term used on the Adobe page?

Cheers

ausgumbie

A:A Win 7 'Local Settings Manager'

Hello ausgumbie.

I believe the Flash Player (32 or 64 bit depending on your Flash installation) entry (in your Windows Control Panel) is what they're referring to by "Local Settings Manager"; the context being that the settings are accessible from your computer locally now holds precedence over the ones they had you set on their online website sometime ago on the older versions of Flash.

Tried to change my administrative settings because all of the sudden I can't install or uninstall programs. Any idea why this is happening? When I try to install I get this message: "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." I am 100% sure that I the system administrator. I've checked the processes running on my computer and there's nothing suspicious there, and my computer seems the same speed as always. Any input would be great, thank you.

A:Local Security Settings not there

Let's do this real quick, create a new user account with admin privs, and see if that account suffers the same problem.
I'm just curious as to whether this is a policy issue or an account issue.

A:Windows cannot find Internet Explorer

hi Nodracol,

have you tried:
start>run and type in:
iexplore.exe
click ok or enter.

update MBAM and scan in normal mode then post the log;

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
*** Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.***
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

please post the MBAM log in reply
