Windows Explorer crashes, restarts, then crashes again

Q: Windows Explorer crashes, restarts, then crashes again

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The computer is probably infected with a virus or other malware. Post this in the Virus and Malware Removal forum:

It usually happens when I download something, or when I try to play certain games such as CoD 4 but only when I try to connect to an online server. It also used to crash whenever I loged into windows and had nod32 running but I've uninstalled nod and that problems gone.

I think it has something to do with Korean Typewriter or something. Help is really appreciated. I currently am running with nothing but AVG in my system tray, but I want to run all my programs without it crashing if its possible.

I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

Hi,

I have Windows 8.1 running on my Acer Aspire V3-772G. Windows explorer crashes randomly, and restarts instantly. Various solutions on the internet are for problems where explorer crashes due to a specific task such as accessing some programs. In my case, it is just random and occurs once in a while. Help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did and does the same every - seconds I googled the problem and did following steps not in the same order as below which didn't resolve the issue - restarted few times and switched off PC completely - tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix - did SFC SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed - ran Malwerbytes with no malware found - did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found - did a clean boot all non-windows services were not used and it still crashed - did a diagnostic start up so only basic windows services were used and (and explorer crashes on Windows start-up. restarts) system it helped - I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores meaning I probably haven't started the service doesn't it make it automatically Other info - system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up thus eliminating issue with external applications - when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost exe disappears then and shortly after appears back it may or may not be relevant - I Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up. didn't do any major updates yesterday only updated Steam platform and installed one new game - I can't do perfmon report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the application before windows explorer crashes again - BSOD Dump amp System File Collection Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up. is done attached and I did it in normal mode so when system was crashing as it may include some extra info I will appreciate any help in that matter as I'm now left clueless to the issue and don't really want to reinstall the system My system Windows Home Premium SP x Intel i GHz GB RAM

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

Welcome!

How long has this been going on? You may want to try a system restore.

You may also want to do a repair install.

Links are for Windows 7, but works for Vista too.

the dump point to wininit.exe, the windows startup process, the crash was caused by the termination of a critical system thread or process which means that somehowwinint.exe was terminated and crashed your computer, all we have to do now is work out why and how the process was terminated, if it didn't happen untill you installed the graphics card it could be thaat it is doing something that is affecting wininit.exe

My explorer exe constantly crashes and restarts however when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem So I began to use the app DriverView to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank the three files were dump dumpata sysdump dumpfve sysdump msahci sysThey are said to be located at C Windows System Drivers but when I looked there i couldn t find them I tried scanning for viruses in restarts continously. explorer.exe crashes and normal and safe mode using AVG but explorer.exe crashes and restarts continously. I found nothing I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira I also scanned in normal and safe mode explorer.exe crashes and restarts continously. using Avira but I still found nothing The virus blockers i used also were updated For some reason I just can t findi them I shut down explorer exe and then i ran HijackThis don t know if that affected the log Anyways here it is Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v Scan saved at PM on Platform Windows WinNT MSIE Internet Explorer v Boot mode NormalRunning processes C Windows system Dwm exeC Windows system taskhost exeC Program Files Synaptics SynTP SynTPEnh exeC Program Files IDT WDM sttray exeC Program Files HP HP Software Update hpwuSchd exeC Program Files HP Digital Imaging bin HpqSRmon exeC Program Files Hewlett-Packard HP Wireless Assistant HPWAMain exeC Program Files iTunes iTunesHelper exeC Program Files Hewlett-Packard HP QuickTouch HPKBDAPP exeC Program Files HP QuickPlay QPService exeC Program Files Common Files Java Java Update jusched exeC Program Files Zune ZuneLauncher exeC Program Files Synaptics SynTP SynTPHelper exeC Program Files DivX DivX Update DivXUpdate exeC Program Files Nero Nero Nero BackItUp NBAgent exeC Program Files Avira AntiVir Desktop avgnt exeC Program Files Windows Sidebar sidebar exeC Program Files Hewlett-Packard Shared HpqToaster exeC Windows ehome ehmsas exeC Windows System rundll exeC Windows System rundll exeC Windows explorer exeC Users Marco Downloads HijackThis exeR - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Default Page URL http ie redirect hp com svs rdr TYPE a ion amp pf cnnbR - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Search Page http go microsoft com fwlink LinkId R - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Start Page http ie redirect hp com svs rdr TYPE a ion amp pf cnnbR - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Default Page URL http ie redirect hp com svs rdr TYPE a ion amp pf cnnbR - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Default Search URL http go microsoft com fwlink LinkId R - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Search Page http go microsoft com fwlink LinkId R - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Start Page http ie redirect hp com svs rdr TYPE a ion amp pf cnnbR - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Search SearchAssistant R - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Search CustomizeSearch R - HKCU Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Internet Settings ProxyOverride localR - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Toolbar LinksFolderName O - Hosts localhostO - BHO amp Yahoo Toolbar Helper - D -C F - efb- B - ECA - C Program Files Yahoo Companion Installs cpn yt dllO - BHO HP Print Enhancer - C E- - -BF - C - C Program Files HP Digital Imaging Smart Web Printing hpswp printenhancer dllO - BHO Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - E F-C D - D -B D- B D BE B - C Program Files Common Files Adobe Acrobat ActiveX AcroIEHelper dllO - BHO WormRadar com IESiteBlocker NavFilter - CA F - F E- B -A E- E E C C - C Program Files AVG AVG avgssie dll file missing O - BHO Java Plug-In SSV Helper - DBC -A - b-BC - C C C A - C Program Files Java jre bin jp ssv dllO - BHO HP Smart BHO Class - FFFFFFFF-CF E- F B-BDC - E E A - C Program Files HP Digital Imaging Smart Web Printing... Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A:Explorer.exe continuously crashes/restarts

After restarting in safemode and checking event-viewer, I saw the following:

"The shell stopped unexpectantly and explorer.exe was restarted"

I don't know what that means or how to fix it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Can you play the file on the camera? It looks like the files you copied over from the camera are corrupted. Delete the ones you have and try to save the files from the camera again. Make sure the file plays on your computer before deleting off of the camera, or uploading to YouTube.

I have recently had an issue with my computer...when I open my picture files, Explorer "cannot open, file corrupted" & "encountered a problem" and restarts. I have run spyware/malware programs and can find nothing wrong in the logs. What should I be looking for? Is my flash player needing an update, or a newer service pack for Microsoft needed? I am not I.T. savy and am looking for feedback.

Thanks very much!!

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do and Click when Properties Crashes restarts then Explorer Right on remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant However now the error is consistant Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties and I can replicate it On certain files when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself restart up At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege because it crashes every time I try to start it I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the results there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer So let's try it again anyone got a clue about this issue My system is an ACER that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello,
I am trying to run a few different repairs but they all require me to right click and then run as admin. My problem is that if I right click any Icon or desktop anything explorer crashes and restarts. I can not find any way to give myself admin access. I am the admin of the computer and logged in under my account but it does not matter what account I log in under it always crashes. Is there any other way to run the CMD sfc /scannow?
Thanks

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hello,

Explorer intermittently crashes for some reason and it gets annoying. This is not Windows Internet Explorer, it is Windows Explorer. I'll be copying or moving files typically, or dbl click on a movie or picture file to launch it. It pops up a dialog saying explorer needs to be restarted. When I clik on it it restarts the desktop. What could be causing this?

Thanks

Hello After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums I finally and specific times explorer.exe at crashes restarts have to submit a help topic because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows explorer exe crashes whenever I do explorer.exe crashes and restarts at specific times one of the following items - Right click on desktop to explorer.exe crashes and restarts at specific times see display properties the right-click menu never comes up explorer just crashes I can get to the display properties fine through control panel - Open up Start Programs and enter an application sub-menu Explorer doesn t crash until the sub menu opens sometimes instantly sometimes in a few seconds - Hovering over an icon on my desktop Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop - Trying to open My Computer A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily then explorer crashes which also closes the window - Trying to browse files via Start Run or through Task Manager Explorer crashes after several seconds regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one For Start Run the window closes for task manager sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse - Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel Other controal panel options work but this one always crashes explorer I have tried the following solutions - Scanned for malware and removed a vundo virus using Malwarebytes The virus was reported to cause a similar reaction to explorer but so far no forum post sounds exactly like my issue - Cleaned my registry using Spotmau PcMatic and RegTweaker My system is moving a tad faster but explorer still crashes - System Restored to a point before I started having the issue No luck - Renaming explorer exe and updating the shell value for the Winlogin key - Replacing explorer exe with another copy from another computer - sfc purge and scan several times after each other failed attempt The first time I had this issue was right after either Comodo or Avira picked up a virus or at least the behavior of one It was off the Red Lobster site I allowed the file to come in thinking it was a false positive Comodo has a lot of those but was to slow to block the second warning when it picked it up in the cache file I do not know if this is a related event but it is the last thing I remember that was unusual prior to this problem occuring The only other thing I can think of is that I uninstalled SQL Server and VSS logging off of my system because I couldn t ever get it to install correctly and I received an error everytime windows booted Other symptoms I am experiencing since this issue started again maybe related or not - Avira won t update anymore files download but will not install - Quicken will no longer open - Media Player was having issues locking up and would cause explorer to crash continuously That issue is resolved since I reinstalled it I should probably also mention that my HD is on its last legs I am trying to correct the explorer issue before I attempt a final backup which will be used to ghost my new HD If I can t do it oh well but fixing this issue first would save me a lot of time or would have at this point Please let me know if any other information may be helpful I am not too experienced pulling system logs but take direction very well - Thanks for your help Jeff

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

A:Explorer.exe Crashes, attempts restart, crashes again. Details Inside

Are you running both AVG and MSE? If so, remove one or the other. Having two security programs that accomplish essentially the same tasks can cause conflicts due to them accessing the same system files or system resources simultaneously. It is possible this is the behavior that is causing your explorer.exe issue.

Im confused, but I will describe this best I can:

explorer.exe crashes when viewing folders or anything built on explorer.exe (I guess) at exactly 11 seconds in on them. It also randomly crashes every couple hours. Im extremely confused by all this and wondering if anyone knows what is going on.

Thanks to anyone who helps or attempts to do so.

A:XP SP2: explorer.exe randomly crashes and always crashes when in folders

Have you done any recent updates or installed any new software to the computer?

Also, I would suggest downloading HiJackThis! and then including the log file in a post so that it can be looked at by one of the qualified agents here in order to help you out. Also you might try downloading and installing MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and running it. I have found that program to be quite helpful in identifying potential OS issues.

If you are getting explorer.exe crashes as often as you say, then there may be more serious damage to your operating system that will potentially result in a clean reinstall.

I have read many posts about Error code 00000050, and most posts say something about a kernel driver issue. I've updated all drivers and softwares on the servers and still receive the crashes/errors. Anybody have any insight on this or experience this problem?

If anyone wants to see the MEMORY.dmp file, let me know as I cannot upload it as it's around 250MB. I can setup something on FTP

Ever sence i downloaded a file i havnt been able to boot windows normally safe mode debug mode or any mode u can think of It just Windows drive offline? Hard restarts crashes and shows the welcome logo screen crashes and then restarts If I choose the option to 'not auto restart if system encounters a problem quot via th F boot menu same thing except that i get a BSOD I have tried system recovery the only option that works with out an error is command prompt Now to the real problem lol If what i had before wasnt a big problem What I need to know is how to Hard drive offline? Windows crashes and restarts put a hard drive back into read write mode and back online in command prompt Currently when I run the command quot Diskpart quot after i am in diskpart i run quot list disk quot it Hard drive offline? Windows crashes and restarts shows my hard drive along with another Disk quot disk quot Now i don't know what quot disk quot is I think it is part of the virus but it has an next to it when my main hard drive quot disk quot doesn't have the Also my big problem is that it shows the status of my main hard rive to be invalid and is currently dynamic So how do I make it not dynamic and put it back online in command prompt

A:Hard drive offline? Windows crashes and restarts

Oh also obviously when I tried to reinstall windows 7 with the disk it didn't notice any drives and asked me to load a driver. Which is beacuse it is currently invalid and is dynamic. So plz dont tell me to try recovery mode beacause it wont work, If am going to fix it it is going to be done in command prompt. Also lost data is not an issue here i dont care if I have to reformatt my hard Drive as long as i can get it validated so i can install windows 7 back on it.

This does not happen all the time, maybe one out of ten boots the computer gets to the 'Starting Windows' screen and crashes/restarts. This happens just before you see the animation of the colored dots beginning to form the Windows Logo, but the 'Starting Windows' writing is displayed...then it crashes/restarts. Windows knows this is happening because it wants to check out the operating system and after taking forever to do so finds nothing. I do not see any error reports in Event Viewer that seem to pertain to this problem and Windows does not show a BSOD either. Does anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot this problem?

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
Click Start Menu

Thanks for listening as my user name reflects I am now into stuff I'm ignorant about History Had this computer a little over a year I Browser windows memory crashes, crashes, BSOD complete, won't test with gb of memory windows ultimate etc About a month ago started seeing BSOD's The BSOD would normally reflect quot Memory Management quot as the cause Then the browsers started crashing tried Browser crashes, windows crashes, memory test won't complete, BSOD chrome firefox and IE Have removed and re installed all of them I continue to received quot windows has recovered quot screens Was reading this thread attempted the memory test via CD it ran for several hours actually alowed it to run all night Browser crashes, windows crashes, memory test won't complete, BSOD When I went to bed it was on test the errors were moving from to I got up this morning same numbers same test Seemed like it was stuck on that run even though the error numbers were still changing I have down loaded and ran who crashed It's conclusion is ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- crash dumps have been found and analyzed A Browser crashes, windows crashes, memory test won't complete, BSOD third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers shareduserdata sys If no updates for these drivers are available try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination the errors that have been reported for these drivers and include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query This often yields interesting results from discussions from users who have been experiencing similar problems ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attempted to install and run the quot SF diagnostic tool quot from the desk top I get an error message x I have a temperature monitor utility all temperatures are within range Recently I have run the Norman Malware cleaner Not sure where to go from here

A:Browser crashes, windows crashes, memory test won't complete, BSOD

If Memtest86+ is showing up errors, then there are hardware issues present. It's just discerning what hardware is bad. Initial suspect obviously is memory, but the unusual case makes it think it's some logic error like some CPU failure or something. It's also possible that when burning it to CD that the Memtest itself got corrupted somehow (i.e. bad burn).

16 GB is a lot of memory on a consumer motherboard. There is the possibility that while your motherboard can handle 16GB of memory, that 16GB of the actual memory model that you're using may not be supported. Certain configurations of memory can have problematic issues. So while the memory sticks themselves may not be bad, the actual 16GB setup of them may break things.

Have you tested system stability with reduced amount of RAM, like 1/2 sticks of RAM, as well as running Memtest on a couple passes for each separate stick?

We have started seeing this issue with our new deployments of Windows 8.1 - we have around 7 drive mappings pointing to a n EMC NAS (VNX7600) and although I can access all drive4s if I drop to the command prompt -windows explorer FAILS to display all mapped
drives. We see this issue over the VPN which would indicate this issue is somewhat related to network latency and Windows Explorer trying to enumerate and display all pertinent info such as free/used disk space.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi all,

I really hope someone can help me out here, as this is my work box, and it will take me about a week to get everything re-installed and configured if I have to format :-(

The problem is that if I try to open windows explorer or internet explorer, they immediately crash. I suspect that this is due to spyware / virus.

I have since upgraded from service pack 2 - 3 and run scans with McAfee, Avast and SpyHunter3. Can't find anything ...
All open / save dialog boxes work fine though ... which is luckily the only way i can work now ... through firefox

Hi Eric and welcome to the forum. You have some junk that needs to go, and I need to run a good scanner. Since you are having trouble downloading, I will use HJT first, then you should be able to download and run the scan. Follow these directions in the posted order.1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe View the links then I suggest you use Add Remove program to uninstall this junk.http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htmhttp://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/arch...4.php#viewpoint2) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\palstart.exe <<< this program is nasty, see this: http://www.superadblocker.com/definition/palstart/ If you see anything about in in Add Remove programs, uninstall it also.3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.htmlR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.comR3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing(items with (no file) are not working right if at all. My windows computer has crashed while using Windows Explorer - or most any file searches - since I bought it in late It has all the upgrades and modifications from Microsoft and Dell and continues to crash If I open Windows Explorer a Browser Crashes Windows Explorer or any other Windows Explorer Crashes program with a quot File open quot capability merely while scrolling down the directory listing it will crash - and worse it will often take all the other opened programs on my screen with it I have learned that re-trying two or three times somehow solves the program and I can get to what I'm looking for Also I have an old graphics program Paint Shop Pro which seems immune to this program I'm running it under full compatibility mode and I don't have this problem with it I have contacted Microsoft so many times - to no avail - that I finally dumped the computer and bought an Apple But we all know that Apple has it's own problems so I jump over to the Win machine occasionally So I have the two computer sitting here side-by-side Like any strangers they don't speak to each other and I'm the third party who needs the friendship of both individually I have pretty much decided however this Windows model will be my last PC unless someone totally brilliant comes up with a quot why this is happening quot saving grace Best to all

It is difficult to know how to proceed without more information. Please follow the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html even though you are not getting a blue screen crash. The Event Viewer logs may indicate what is causing the crashes.

In the meantime: Go through the steps for Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

   Warning
Some of the steps require that you open up your system, so before doing any of the re-seating and connection checking steps, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? If you are unsure of the answers to these questions, contact your system manufacturer. WARNING: Some steps in that tutorial involve removing the system case or system panels and can void your warranty!!!
The steps specifically related to the warning are steps 8, 10, and 11.

I have a problem with windows explorer crashing. I open it to access my folders and files then it crashes and I have to close it and open it again then it crashes after I click a file or folder. I get these weird icons on the side too. Sometimes it turns to a funky looking folder and sometimes my folder icons turn to trees. I also get an error message something about syntax error. Any thoughts?

A:Windows Explorer Crashes

Hello mcbain221,

Could you possibly try and copy the suspect folder to the desktop, or any location which is not on the external hard drive, and then check the newly created copy to see if it still has the same problem or not.

Hey

So I recently upgraded to Windows 8, and windows explorer keeps crashing. This did happen before the upgrade, but appears to have gotten more annoying now.

Some times I have noticed it happening: While watching a video and then returning to desktop, it has closed. While copying files (often!). And then every now and again inbetween.

Please let me know what other details you need, its really frustrating and help would be appreciated,

A:Windows Explorer crashes

One somewhat drastic option you have is to backup your personal data, installation files, & product keys to external storage, and reinstall Windows 8 using the "Custom" option, and let Windows 8 reformat the hard drive & reinstall onto a fresh partition. Opt to 'keep nothing' from the previous system. It sounds like a leftover from your troubled Windows 7 installation has migrated to your Windows 8 installation.
_______________

Otherwise, it's the usual troubleshooting steps.
1) Research your installed software's compatibility.
2) Run extensive malware scans. (a few from bootable media, if possible - such as Windows Defender Offline, AVG Rescue CD, Avira Rescue CD)
3) Check in Event Viewer for items listed just before & just after problem events.
4) Run diagnostics on your system hardware (especially hard drive & memory).
5) Make sure all available Windows Updates have installed successfully. (This does not include optional updates).
6) Check on your manufacturer's support website for any listed "known issues" with your PC. Especially watch for updates to the Bios, driver updates, and updates to any manufacturer-provided applets for power management, networking, etc.
7) Look the the Control Panel's Action Center for any listed issues.

Regarding software compatibility: if you have any third-party file utilities that concern compression, specialized file extension handling, etc -- temporarily uninstall these & see if the issues resolve. Research at the support website for your antivirus product, too -- as updates can often resolve incompatibilities that crop up.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Hello. most people will need to run the SFC program 4 or 5 times to see if it can repair files . Also. you should be on SP2 . You might really want to get those updates from Microsoft installed to ensure all your programs work as they should.

Hi,I don't see anything suspicious here..It seems to mostly happen when the folder contains video files.Well, I guess you are dealing with this bug in explorer related with shmedia.dll. This one is responsible to make a preview of the avi/video files and that may explain why your explorer crashes when you attempt to open a folder where a lot of videofiles are present. We can disable this, so do next.. Go to start > run and copy and paste next in the field:regsvr32 /u shmedia.dllHit enter. Then reboot your computer. After reboot, look if you're still having the same problem.

ok...my mum called me over bc i usually fix her basic computer problems, but this time im rather stumped...Every time i try to run any program to help, it says Windows Explorer is not responding, furthermore, i cannot access the internet. When i try to access the network connections, it says to make sure Network Connections is running.

Also, i just deleted a trojan, i cannot recall the name, but AVG couldnt delete it. I saw it was located in the temp internet files folder, so i just cleared it. It also said there was a change in kernel32, but i've been told thats rather common.

She has XP Home SP2, and i dont know what else would be helpful.

Thank you very much to anyone who responds.

Hi folks,
My windows Explorer crashes every time I try to open My Documents folder. the error message comes up and tell me: Data Execution Prevention-Microsoft Windows. To help protect your computer, windows has closed this program: Windows Explorer. Now this only seems to happen on one folder.
A lot of times, it shuts all my browser windows, but they do return. I have scanned it several times and it says there is no infection in the program, so I am stumped and am asking how we might fix this issue??
Thank you all,
BE

A:Windows Explorer crashes . . .

You probably have an invalid file in the folder, or you have a corrupted context menu entry for that folder.

Try Safe Mode to see if you get access to the folder.

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: xvid.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00042c42

I can play my multimedia files on the (music, video, etc.) through windows media player, etc. And I have no problem saving, copying, moving etc. files to the drive.

What other information do you need to help me resolve this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If nothing seems to be working even in safe mode, then please read and follow all instructions in the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". You may have performed some of these steps already. If you can't perform a step, then skip and continue with the next. In step #9 there are instructions for downloading HijackThis and creating a log. (This is a self-extracting version which will automatically install HJT in the proper location.) If HijackThis will not run, try renaming it. Open the HijackThis Folder, find the HijackThis.exe file, right-click on it and select rename. Type Scanner.exe and hit "Enter". Double-click on Scanner.exe (which is still HijackThis) and then run your scan. If needed, change the .exe to something else such as .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr. Example: Scanner.bat or Scanner.comWhen you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day. Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. Please include the top portion of the HijackThis log that lists version information. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".

If I open one or two instances of WE I get and error message 'the memory could not be read'. If I don't close the message explorer stays open but loses some functionality (like picture icons) and slows down, sometimes ot the point of not working at all. If I do close the error message explorer closes entirely.

Any ideas for me?

Thanks!

Hi all,

Needing some help diagnosing a problem. I have reviewed a couple of postings on here (obtained via google search) but they do not solve my problem.

3 days ago I updated my windows system (comprised of many updates) and I also installed MS Project 2007. Ever since then I have been experiencing problems with Windows Explorer crashing.

Things I have tried:-

I ran MSConfig and disabled all non-MS services - this didnt solve the problem.

I tried to run Memory Diagnostics (run on restart) - but my laptop doesnt restart properly, it just hangs and windows doesnt start up.

I've ran sfc /scannow and it tells me I've got file corruption, but that it is unable to fix.

It crashes when I look through 'My documents', haven't experienced the crash in any other scenario.....yet.

When win explorer crashes, I dont get the option to 'check for a solution', it just forces a restart.

Can anyone help

Thanks

A:Windows Explorer Crashes

Perform a system restore to a date prior to problems. And test if system is running fine then.
Install the windows updates one at a time and test again.
Finally install MS PROJECT 2007 again and test again.

Now you know what's causing the problem.
System Restore

SP1 is not the answer. I'm running Vista Ultimate, SP1, and am getting frequent Windows Explorer crashes. An example:
Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18164, time stamp 0x4907e242, faulting module MSVCR80.dll, version 8.0.50727.3053, time stamp 0x4889d619, exception code 0xc000000d, fault offset 0x00008aa0, process id 0x504, application start time 0x01c9a84ca786273a.

Another example, a few seconds later, after WE restarted:
Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18164, time stamp 0x4907e242, faulting module MSVCR80.dll, version 8.0.50727.3053, time stamp 0x4889d619, exception code 0xc000000d, fault offset 0x00008aa0, process id 0xf70, application start time 0x01c9a84cbff7a14a.

And yet another:
Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18164, time stamp 0x4907e242, faulting module NBHShx.dll, version 5.9.10.0, time stamp 0x48982f43, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000069c5, process id 0xeb0, application start time 0x01c9a84cd148c41a.

A:Windows explorer crashes as soon as I log in.

Looks like your pretty clean, there are a few things you can remove with hijack, the best thing to do is run a repair.

--The following was quoted from 'http://forum.msi.com.tw', I did not write this, nor will I take any kind of credit--
The following step by step procedure shows you how to do the repair. Note, that you will need the CD key that came with your Windows disk to complete this procedure.

1. Make sure boot order in BIOS is set to floppy (if you have one), cd/dvd, and then the HDD your original Windows was installed on.

2. Insert your original Windows CD into your cd/dvd drive (a slipstreamed cd with SP will also workif you have one). If the Windows Installion menu appears, select Install Windows.

3. If that menu does not appear, go to Start, Turn Off Computer, and then select Restart. After the POST, you will see a prompt, "Press any key to boot from cd..."
so press the space key (any other key will also work).

4. Let Windows setup continue.

5. After a short while you will see an option to repair your Windows using the Recovery Console. Do NOT select this option. Just continue.

6. Soon after this you will see a message "Searching for a previous Windows Installation".

7. When Setup finds your previous Windows installion you will be given an option to Repair that installation. Follow the prompt on the screen, i.e, press R to repair.

8. Now just let setup continue until it is complete and you see your desktop.

9. Then, go to Windows Update (Start, All Programs, Windows Update) and let it search for and install any available service packs, and/or other updates.

10. Lastly, if you have any drivers that are wish to use other than the ones in Windows, just install them in the normal fashion.

Now your Windows is repaired and fully updated, and hopefully the problems you saw previously have been fixed.

As far as your hijack this file, I'm sure someone here can help you with that better than I can.

I just got a new laptop a week or so ago. It's a ThinkPad Z60t. One problem I've already noticed several time is that Windows Explorer crashes randomly...so far it's been when I try to open a folder containing pictures, but I'm unsure if that really has anything to do with it since it's very random.

Once it crashes and I try again, it's fine.

This is on WinXP SP2 with all current updates, etc. All I've really installed since I bought the computer is security software such as AVG, AdAware, Security Task Manager, etc as well as a couple Adobe programs. Also Firefox and Thunderbird, but that's about it. However, I'm pretty sure that I had this happen at least once before the majority of that was even installed, so I don't think it should be related to any of it.

Any ideas?

do you have good CD?

If you have the cd I would run a system repair and see if that fixes the problem.

Help is much abliged, as I've been getting this message from time to time. It isn't every day, but somehow it just happens from time to time. Nothing when I'm doing in particular either, whether I am searching files, or just going on Firefox it pops up with that error. I replaced the file causing the problem (DLL) and it didn't work. I thought it did because it didn't pop up for about a week, but nope. What should I do?

Best regards,
Alex

Hello OneDarkLord and welcome to Seven Forums.

Run a full scan with your antimalware suite of choice to rule out any malware issues. Since no antimalware product is 100% effective 100% of the time, I'd follow up with a couple of free on-demand scanners just in case your primary scan missed something. Some of the recommended free products are Malwarebytes | Hitman Pro | ESET | HouseCall | Superantispyware.

If your computer is malware free I'd next run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) The SFC will attempt to repair damaged or corrupt system files. If problems are found, run the scan at least 3 times, rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If this doesn't fix Windows Explorer some folks might recommend a Repair Install. That's certainly an option but you may want to read through this Microsoft Answers forum thread. It's about 28 pages long but offers some additional things to try to repair Windows Explorer.

"Windows explorer has stopped working"/"windows is - Microsoft Answers

Repair Install

Please post back if any of this helped or not.

My storage drive which I hold my movies, music and shows for some reason always crashes since this morning. When I want to go look in Windows Explorer crashes (not Internet Explorer). "Windows Explorer has stopped working" "...trying to find a solution... restarting Explorer". It doesn't reset my computer which I am thankful for, it just closes the window. It is only with this hard drive and I seem to be able to run things FROM the hard drive (such as running videos already on stream through TVersity, music in iTunes), I just cant 'explore' the hard drive myself. It is really annoying because I need to be able to sort all the stuff out. Such as placing new torrents in my stream files and editing them and such. Please help and thanks so much.

Hi sonic and welcome

we need to do some digging to find the cause
can you type eventvwr in search? go to the windows logs>application tab.

You need to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column) that say app hang, app crash, etc.

when you find them use the built in snipping tool (type snipping in search) to make a screen shot of them and the attachment icon (shaped like a paper clip) in the reply form to upload them

Explorer.exe faults due to memory access issues in module atiumdag.dll

As such, I'd suggest the following steps:
1. Download the latest version of the ATI drivers (NOT the Catalyst Control Center) for your video card from http://www.ati.com
2. Uninstall (through Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program) all ATI stuff on your system.
3. Install the downloaded drivers and test to see if that's fixed things for you.

Also, sometimes the whole desktop background turns white and the programs have the white overlay too, and the taskbar crashes.

Additionally, my taskbar experiences lag too, (e.g. the glowing icons stays glowing even after when I hover it for a few seconds) and nothing is clickable at that point. These problems only started yesterday, and the whole startup process has also dragged for a minute longer than before.

This problem has been fairly annoying, as it wastes a lot of time, and most importantly the program Steam (for gaming) isn't working anymore as it gets stuck while logging in, and I'm sure it isn't because of my internet connection problems, as internet browsing works flawlessly.

I've tried configuring msconfig to start with only windows processes and nothing else, but the problem persists and I'm not sure if it is from some program or virus. I've ran a scan using Norton Internet Security, but nothing comes up as hostile. Might I add, Norton has been lagging severely too, and the anti-virus program becomes unresponsive sometimes. I have found that a process "svchost.exe" which takes up a lot of memory than usual, ranging from 100K to 250K memory, which wasn't the case a few days before. Ending the process results in Windows Explorer crashing and restarting with the basic scheme without transparent windows and taskbar, and it terminates my wireless connection as well. I have yet to try running in safe mode though.

My PC is still running other applications smoothly, such as games like Sleeping Dogs, but sometimes the entire windows freezes and nothing is operational for awhile. I am definitely sure it is not my hardware, as my computer runs i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz with 12 GB of RAM. I use Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, and it is a HP Pavilion desktop too. Please help, and thank you in advance!

Using Norton may be part of your problem. It is a known resource hog and has become unpopular with most computer geeks. So, I would suggest replacing it with a different AV program; Avira has a free version with a nag screen and a paid version which I use. There are several other well respected AV programs out there, both free and pay for use.

With that said, try Kaspersky Rescue Disk;
http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208282173

AND

MalwareBytes AntiMalware, aka MBAM;

(choose the Free version on the right side of the screen)

ever since I ran 'sysprep' win7 windows explorer crashes after 10 minutes every time I log on.  I think sysprep resurrected a virus like conduit from out of quarantine.  I ran malware bytes and it completes the scan about the same time windows explorer crashes  It shows up 33 bad objects many of them conduit.  I go to quarantine them all but it crashes when I do.

Hello -- I use an external hard drive to store pictures and videos. These are organized into various folders; when I try to open one particular folder, however, it causes Explorer to crash.

This folder is one of several other sub-folders that all work normally, i.e. the problem appears to be specifically related to this one. It was suggested that I change the "folder layout" settings to remove the navigation plane in the Exlporer window, which actually solved the problem for a few weeks; last night the folder again began crashing.

I've scanned the entire drive for viruses with current version of Kaspersky (no problems detected.) I've fiddled around with all of the options in the "properties" tab; in th past, one combination or another would make the folder/Explorer stable again for a while, but now it doesnt work.

Any advice / links about how to deal with this sort of thing? Thanks in advance

This started slowly a couple weeks ago The only changes I recall between when it worked and when it broke was maybe some Windows Updates I have no idea which ones And of course automatic database updates to my security suite software Windows Home Premium x Security is Kaspersky Internet Security version only reason I upgraded from v is that is not compatible with Win The basic problem is crashes Explorer x64 Windows that Windows Explorer ie the system shell and file manager will crash So far as I can tell no crash data is being sent x64 Windows Explorer crashes back to MS At least of the crash dialogs just say quot close and restart the program quot This can happen when trying to right-click on something to pull up the Properties or Rename dialog or any other context-menu command It can happen when pressing F to rename a file Depending on x64 Windows Explorer crashes exactly where I am in Windows seems to determine if it's just a file-manager explorer exe process that crashes or the entire GUI When it's the entire GUI most of it restarts but some items sometimes fail to re-show in the Taskbar and or system tray Over all it does not seem to matter how long Windows has been up but the longer it is up the more likely it is that it'll crash Possibly related to this is that I cannot use sleep hibernation Windows becomes unstable when resuming from sleep or hibernation I have contacted Microsoft about that and after several weeks of back-and-forth via email and telephone the problem has been archived as unresolved

I've encountered a serious problem concerning command prompt and a few .mp4 files...

Using a formula I found elsewhere, I attempted to combine some of my video files using command prompt. The formula being "copy /B ?C:\movie1.mpg? + ?C:\movie2.mpg? + ?C:\movie3.mpg? ?C:\completemovie.mpg?." I realized that I was fusing .mp4 files, not .mpg files, though I figured it shouldn't have mattered. After successfully completing the combining process, I tried opening the folder with the file inside it. I saw the file and thought "awesome, it worked!" but two seconds later a window appeared saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working"... and now every time I try to go to that folder, Windows Explorer crashes. I've tried deleting the file, and then deleting the entire folder, but the same thing happened... any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was instructed to start a thread in here in hopes of finding a solution to a situation. Windows 7 explorer seems to crash when navigating in folders. I am unsure why this issue started and I am still unable to correct it. Please see source thread :http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic444004.htmlSo far no luck in fixing at this point. Guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
