Buying new computer/OS for video editing

Q: Buying new computer/OS for video editing

I need a computer that can handle video editing, mainly Final Cut Pro and Adobe Suite. Right now I have a 5-year-old MacBook Pro that can't manage FCP let alone run any programs smoothly and quickly. I can't afford a MacPro, so I've been considering iMacs. What's my cheapest option that will get the job done? I've heard you can buy PCs and install Mac OS. Would that be my best option? (Having PC capabilities would be awesome, for light gaming). I want to save money but I don't want to buy anything that isn't equipped to handle video editing well (cause then I'm just wasting money). I want to stick with Mac OS, but I don't care about the design or whatever, so I'd happily get a PC and put Mac on it, but I don't know how I would go about doing that. So if you have any suggestions or advice, please let me know! Thanks!!

Preferred Solution: Buying new computer/OS for video editing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I need some advice about what to look for when buying a desktop. I will need the system to do video editing for a video narrative for a research project and to deal with digital images of art work. I would want something that can be expandable in the future. I would like to keep it under 2,000 if possible(this dosen't include cost of monitor). What should I look for in terms of RAM, CPU, graphics card, etc.

I am way out of date...the last desktop I bought was about 4-5 years ago.

Thanks,

Hello guys,

I'm scanning the market for a good pc for video editing. I need a pc that is built just perfect for video editing, and maybe even some software recommendations. I have purchased many computers that lag when I edit them, I want the computer to handle video smoothly, when fast forwarding and everything. Any recomendations on exact specs and models would be appreciated.
I'm currently checking out this pc, is this any good?

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Produc..._Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&topnav=
also I use magix 11 editing software, Is that any good? or is there something just as easy and similar and better?

thanks I appreciate your help ahead of time

A:Video Editing computer..

Well, I use a core 2duo, not quite as good as the one you're looking at. It renders like a bat out of hell compared to single core but its still disappointing when it comes to real time editing; it still lags and jumps and that's with a high end video card, plenty of memory and only DVD quality. So as far as I'm concerned, it's improved (at least it doesn't stall out) but there's still a ways to go.

That said, there are programs that are better at scrubbing speeds than others, it depends on the approach they take to the pre-rendering process I think, how they apply the edits before they are actually made. I use Premiere Elements and I'd grade that as poor and Pinnacle Studio which I'd grade as moderately acceptable.

Someday, maybe a quad or 8-core, and smooth hi-def editing?? Still dreaming!
I think the only way to know for sure is to actually try it out and see for yourself. Those are good specs on that loptop and it will probably outperform my desktop but one never knows for sure...

So I am asking anyone what would be a nice computer to purchase for video editing. I have $800.00 for the cpu . I already have several monitors, mice, keyboards and alot of other pc stuff laying around. I have been going thru tigerdirect and other online pc companies. I just need a tower with what ? I am not sure if I can get by with a 2.0Ghz or if I should try to find something like 3 or more GHz. Any help would be great.

A:video editing computer

Hi
1. Read reviews on the types of parts you're considering, taking note of stability and performance.
2. Apply what is learned from above to your budget.
3. Keep in mind that drive speed, ram amount, and processing power are the keys to vid editing. This means you can forego the latest vid cards, unless you want one to game. You might want to consider raid10 for your disk subsystem, at least for the apps. Store data on a raid5 array if you're concerned with data loss. Since you seem to be doing it as a hobby, you might as well just store data on a single large disk, or a jbod array; Just a Bunch of Disks.
Some thoughts for you.

What kind of computer hardware and features are important for video editing?

The reason I ask is because my computer that I use now is already being pushed to its' limit with just web browsing and media viewing and I'm considering either upgrading my machine or perhaps buying an entire new computer altogether. Does anyone know the kind of computers that video editors use? Any links to computers that I can buy from an online vendor is more than welcome so I can get a good idea of what sort of price range I'm looking at.

Thank you!

Just do a search for the video editor of your choice, and include the words "system requirements"

Like these;

These, I think, are minimum requirements.

Hi, I'm buying a quad-core processor for video editing, the AMD Phenom II X4 965, and here's the hard drive I'm considering right now. I'll be running Windows 7 64-bit. So my question is: What motherboard would you recommend? I admittedly know little about hardware, but I know I want one that's both compatible with these two and can hold up to 16 gigs of RAM.

Any suggestions?

So, we typically order between 2 laptop and 2 desktop models when we receive a request. Today we got a special request from a user wanting to build a video editing machine. Here is what the request read;

Intel Core 2 Quad Processor - 3.0 GHz 12 MB L2 cache
GeForce 9800 GT
Two 750 GB hard drives (7200 RPM)
EVGA 132-YW-E178-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI FTW ATX Intel mobo
8 GB RAM
Vista 64 bit version

Could somebody tell me if any of this is impractical? I don't know enough about processors or motherboards to have an opinion, but I know we use the 9800 GTs a lot. I don't even know if that mobo will handle 8 GB RAM, but from what I've read, I'm guessing not. Also, is Vista 64 bit really going to give a big advantage of XP?

I'm working on this guys computer he has a new HP computer no more than year old and it has windows 7 .It has 4 GB of RAM and AMD Athlon II 450 Triple-Core Processor.

It is a 20 minute video clip and size is 1.6 GB in size after trimming the 20 minute to 18 minute it took well over a hour to save it .Why so long ? Is the computer no good.

Does it need more RAM or faster CPU?

How can a 20 minute trimmed to a 18 minute take over a hour to save ? There is a other clip 6 minutes and timmed to well 5 minutes and well it took well 30 minutes to save it and size was 294 MB.

What is wrong here.

I compiled a video in CyberLink Power Director (video editing software). When I would preview the video in the edit it would run very choppy in some parts. I produced the video and now it still runs choppy when viewing it with any media player. I am now trying to edit the video in windows movie maker and it runs incredibly choopy, delaying any action I make. It basically takes 15 seconds just to cut a portion of the video, or any other action for that matter.

What's the problem?

Some searching through google, "alternativeto", YouTube, for video and audio editing or recording software, FREEWARE, showed BandiCam, Screencast-o-matic, Audacity, and I've been aware of Windows Movie Maker.

I would like to be able to make audio adjustments and audio changes to a few screencast videos.  I do not really undestand Audacity; but tried learning it many years ago.  I am absolutely not confident nor comfortable with learning Movie Maker; I am not sure how to handle Bandicam, having tried it briefly many many months ago.  I am comfortable with and have used Screencast-o-matic, the free downloadable version, a few times, and it was fairly easy to learn and to use.  I would just like to learn and use something a little bit more clever than Screen-cast-o-matic, and to edit or make changes to some video recordings.  FREE/FREEWARE wanted.

A:Video editing or including audio editing or recording

Hey, cafejose! I have used Movie Maker before. It is not that difficult in fact. And for freewares, then you can see some recommendations of ShowMore. This is a newly-built website that I am very fond of and I get quite a lot help from its application. I always take it to record Skype calls but I think it can also solve your problem here. For more alternatives, I advice you to take these free recording tools introductions for your reference.

A:Will the Computer that im building meet todays gaming & video editing needs?

It appears to be nice system. One thing I would recommend is getting a better power supply. The Thermaltake has only 14 and 15 amps respectively on the two +12v rails. By comparison an Antec 480W psu has 18 amps each on two rails. Anyway, a better brand would be good.

You might want to include a floppy drive. They are so incredibly inexpensive and you'll need it to facilitate the installation of the RAID/SATA drivers you'll need for your SATA hard drive.

Hello,

I need help finding Video editing software compatible with Vista/Win7 that can do the following:

- Remove watermarks from videos.
- Put your own created watermark on a video
- Blur out faces
- Cut parts of the video image
- Edit and draw on the video, replacing the cut piece with a still image, or even another piece of a video

So I guess basically I'm looking for all-out video editing.

I'd prefer freeware. But anything will do if that's all available.

It's no problem if I have to use different programs for each thing.

My current system is a Dell XPS 430 and can handle video editing pretty well.

Thanks!!

I don't think you will get any help here to remove someone elses watermark from a video that doesn't belong to you. The watermark is put there to discourage copying. Helping you I believe would be against forum rules.

Have AverMedia USB2 TV capture module, but may be better to be in notebook rather then having more things to plug in ...

Budget around $1500-2500 (maybe 3,000)

Battery life not a problem be using it mostly at home

I have a 1.8 P-4 older machine with an older ATI graphics card--I forget what model but not one of the higher end gaming models. When I edit videos, the video and the sound don't stay in sinc and the video freezes. I'm not sure if its the older processor or the video card or what. I'm looking to get a 3+ with 833 FSB, which should be plenty for video editing, but don't want it to bottle up with the video card. I also don't want an expensive gaming card if I don't need one, but obviously those things are built for really intensive graphics, but I don't think I need that just for video editing.

What do you recommend?

Hey Guys,

I`ve been playing with my new Xmas computer toys but could do with some help.

I now have an ATI All-in- Wonder Pro 32 meg graphics card and MGI VideoWave 4.

Together with my S-VHS anologue camera I have been trying to capture and edit my video footage.

I can capture my vidoe and save it to disk and play it back in the ATI VCR but the sound is low, (All settings in & out at max.).

I cannot however, open the files from VideoWave 4 to do any editing.

I could realy do with someone with a similar set up to advise me , but all help would be gratefully accepted.

Ps I`m from England
Thanks in advance, Oldpip

I don't know if this technique works in Vegas since I don't use that editor, but can you lay in both tracks of video and then shrink down the one on top and move it to the location of desired superimposition on the base track?

I don't know what version of Windows you're running, but newer versions include Windows Movie Maker in which you can edit video. Movie Maker is very basic and there's not a lot of help, even in the help file, but if it's on your system, try it and play with it. It should be in Programs, or in Accessories.
I have some software from InterVideo called WinDVD Creator, which has editing capabilities. There might even be some freeware or shareware at www.hotfiles.com. Go there and input "video editing" (without quotes).

1) Brightening
- The videos I took with my Nikon Coolpix turned out too dark. I converted them from .mov to .avi (with AVS Video Converter 6, non-activated), and then found and downloaded Virtualdub, with which I am supposed to be able to edit/brighten them. I was able to open the .avi video on virtualdub but don't understand how to proceed.

Is there another, easier way to lighten the video?

2) Rotating
- I took one of the videos "vertically" and need to rotate it by 90 degrees.
I tried to do that in the .mov mode but don't know how.

3) Audio is too fast.
I have integrated some videos (which I had converted from .mov to .avi), which didn't need editing, into DVD SlideshowGUI. They seem to have speeded up (which doesn't bother me so much) but the audio has become unintelligible.

Many thanks for any and all help.

If you typically have a lot of clips or have a video that needs a lot of segmentation so only the best clips can be picked out, Pinnacle Studio (or Avid) probably has the best scene detection software and is the only one that I've used where I can make global filter edits to more than one clip at a time.
Some of my video editors might be a little out of date but with the other ones I have to make the filter applications prior to breaking the video into clips or it becomes quite labor intensive to apply the filters to each clip over and over.

A:can not do video editing

fraps uses a codec (FPS1) that may not be compatible with other editors - transcoding (converting) the files may be a problem as not many converters handle the fraps codec.
In fraps do you get a choice of codecs when exporting your video? if so use fraps to re-export the video using a different codec, then bring the clip into Moviemkaer or Camtasia Studio.
Here is a solution that seems to have worked for this person.

Im curious as to what people recommend as a high end video editing program without breaking the bank? Here are a few suggestions that I have researched and was hoping someone has used one of these products or has a suggestion to one.

-Adobe Premier Pro 2.0 ( Bank Breaker)
-Video Edit Magic (I like this one because it says it can use many different video formats)
-Let's Edit
-Final Cut ( I have not done any research on this one, only know of it)

Thank you so much in advance!

Missy

A:Video Editing

Okay

1. Adobe Premiere---expensive and it has a steep learning curve-----very powerful
2. Video Edit Magic---forget about it---its not high end.
3. Lets Edit---forget about it----not high end.
4. Final Cut---there are two versions, express and Final Cut Pro--both are powerful but require a Mac ( a decent one at that) to run.
5. Vegas Video----the best in my mind---
There are a bunch of others. If you tell us how much you want to spend, then it would be easier to recommend one. Also, what machine are you going to run it on?

I'm confused by the wording of your question. I believe that you're noting that consumer cards are mainly reviewed in the context of gaming, but that you're looking for a good card for video editing. Is that correct?

I don't do video editing, so I can't offer advice there. It may not matter much, unless your software can use the GPU to accelerate some of its processing. If the software supports Cuda, you'd need an nVidia card. AMD is pushing OpenCL, but I have the impression that not much software currently for sale supports that yet.

Hi guys,
I am building a new computer from scratch and I have decided on all the parts except for the video card, which I keep hearing conflicting opinions about from all my friends, so I have come to you for help!!!!!!
I want to get a video card which will play all the new games for the next 2-3 years at medium settings. Right now, I am thinking about the Geforce 8600GT 512 GDDR3 that i found for $130 on newegg but I was told by someone that is currently won't even play some of the new games like Bioshock on low settings. What is your opinion on this card and is there any cards that you guys recommend for the ~150 to 250 price range (cheaper the better)
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

A:Buying a New Video Card

There is no card that will be on top for 2-3 years. Especially not any 8600GT.

The larger amount (512MB) of video memory is just bait for those who assume that bigger is better. All GeForce 8600GT GPU's have a 128-bit memory interface. This makes it quite useless to have 512MB of memory (imagine draining a big bucket of water through a tiny pin-sized hole).

For current-gen games, there is one DX9 card still hanging in there, and that is the Radeon x1950PRO. It's cheap, and will beat any variation of the GeForce 8600GT.

However, I'm guessing you want something DX10-capable and reasonably future-proof. If that's the case, I wouldn't bother with any product in the GeForce 8600 series. Push it up one level and go for the 8800GTS 320MB (slightly above your max. budget, I'm afraid).

I was looking at computers for a friend to buy and found a pretty cheap setup but he'd have to upgrade the video card. If you bought a pci express 2.0 card does the motherboard have to have "2.0" slots or do the cards just fit in the regular pci express slots?

A:Buying new video card, will it fit?

yes the video card will work express 2.0 card are backwards compatible

I need to toss away my crappy SIS Mirage graphics, I really hate it, so I visited Newegg and liked this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814125170

Itīs a 256Mb card, with an interface of 128 bits, and I can afford it. I can only afford 55 dlls, so this is the best. I donīt play very much on the PC, i prefer playing with mi PS2.
Any BUDGET suggestion would be very nice. Thanks.

A:Buying a new AGP video card. Help!

I'd recommend against it if you can wait another week or two and scrap up like $65-$70. The 9200/9500 series do not even have most DX9.0 features, so unless you're planning on playing older games, a smarter upgrade would be to a more DX9.0 compliant card.

You can find Saphire 9600 Pro's on NewEgg for like $68. These would be substantially better, while I'd still say it's not even worth the fuss or hassle of an upgrade until you can get to the 6600/X800GTO level or greater... a 9600 Pro would at least offer more DirectX 9.0 features and decent lower-end performance.

A:Help buying new video card

First, find which cards your motherboard will support and then start filtering them out from there. For example, do you want to use an ATI or NVIDIA based graphics card? Do you use you computer for games or is it a workstation? Obviously, you need to look at the power requirements for each card you look at but it's not a huge deal if you need to swap power supplies (worst case scenario). Also, make sure the card you choose has at least 512MB of onboard vRAM. 256MB is too little these days.

My system is 2.4GHz, 512Ram, GeForce 4 4200.

Question: My son and I do a lot of gaming. Would a newer video card improve game appearance/performance noticably enough to warrent buying one? (We'd be budgeting $200 or so.) We'd like to get reasonable performance out of HalfLife2, etc. Or. is it more sense to wait for next gen. cards?

Suggestions for any video cards?

Thanks!

I'm in the process of building a new computer and need a reccomendation on a video card. I'm looking at a 128mb Geforce mx440 NVidia AGP NR. However, I'm not sure what the "NR" means. My RAM is DDR, does that have anything to do with it? I'm also not entirley sure this is the best choice I can make. What is the difference between Geforce and ATI brands?

It is time for me to upgrade my video card. I just sold my old ti4600 for $103, so my budget is around $140. I really want an ATI card, because I know they perform much better when FSAA and AF are cranked all the way up. I am open to nvidia cards though, if there is a good deal. I am also open to ebay, as I buy pretty much everthing there. It would be nice to get something I could overclock or softmod, but it's not required as long as it plays all the games I like to play (NFSU2, Halo, Call of Duty).
Thanks,
