I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:How to Create a button on Toolbar in Windows 7?

Yes i really want the answer to this question as well. why arent more people asking about it? it seems so obvious! and why did microsoft not provide support for it! i mean duh!

there are several sites which talk about how to do this. but as you can see its bulky when you have to have the full word "navigation pane" spelled out.

please someone figure this out and post back. thanks

When several programs are running with multiple browser windows open, the task bar is not accessible. Mouse over results in the hourglass appearing. I can minimize open windows and open a program off the desktop.

I suspect it is a memory issue. Suggestions?

A:Solved: Excel toolbar button for the Windows Calculator

Actually... I'm running Office 2003 Pro and it has the Windows Calculator as a button called "custom". Under Toolbars> Customize> Commands Tab, clicked on Tools in the left window and scrolled about 2/3 of the way down in the right window. I've got two "Custom" buttons listed after "Camera" and before "Select Names"; one with a deck of cards icon and the other with a calulator icon. Drug it up to my tool bar, saved the settings, and the Windows calculator opens from it. Solitare opens with the deck of cards icon

I didn't even know they were there.... cool.

Microsoft has decided to bring back the "Start button" in Windows 8.1, that's why they have included start button windows 8.1 preview. But that button is not actually a start button. The classic multi-step applicaton launcher is that we have seen in windows 7 and earlier versions of microsoft windows is still missing. Windows 8.1 Start Button is just a shortcut to the windows 8's start menu.

A:Windows 8.1 preview Start button isn't actually a Start button

Yeah..its really not what we are looking for. Best bet is to still use one of the start menu replacements.

sometimes, actually, more and more often, when i go to start the computer the toolbar at the bottom, with the start button, time, windows running, and any small programs that are displayed on the right side with the time. what happens is i go to left or right click anywhere on the toolbar and nothing happens, its like its not even there, no response or anyting . its annoying....i usually have to restart the computer a couple of time before it works normal. i'm not sure if its a virus or anything, i just need help stopping this error from happening.

I am using WLM 2011 installed on Win 7. Please can someone explain if its possible to set the quick access toolbar at the top to just send and receive frome e mail accounts only without syncronising feeds and newsgroups? I know I can do this going to the Home tab & Clicking the little arrow under send and receive and selecting this option from the drop down list but it would be much easier if this could be done from the quick access tookbar. I found using WLM on XP had a more user friendly interface.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris

A:Windows Live Mail Quick Access Toolbar Send Receive Button

Ah, I just found a reply to my own post here in case anyone finds it useful.

Windows Live Mail 2011: How to Customize the Quick Access Toolbar | Microsoft Windows 7 | Tech-Recipes

Using the option under the Home tab & Clicking the little arrow under send and receive and selecting the option "send and receive all e mail accounts then /right click/ add to quick access toolbar. Now I have a new button that does just what I want. I can always right click the unwanted button from the quick access toolbar and select remove if I wish.

Hi I have an HP Pavilion p - a installed with Windows no disc came with the computer The night before I was impatient and forced shutdown and went to sleep The next day I booted the computer to find a message at the beginning aboutrunning a disc check I skipped it and proceeded with the normal booting The desktop had changed to a default format and the bubble at the right hand corner stated that I was in a temporary login I Googled how to return to my usual desktop and majority of the advice was to restart or log off I only have one user So after logging off restarting the computer a few times my original desktop and files returned The next morning when I booted my computer the quot disc check on startup quot message appeared again but I was too late to skip it or windows start up left repair constantly normally Windows startup won't 7 start with options. and it started Windows 7 won't start up constantly left with startup repair or start windows normally options. the checkup I needed my computer so I forced shutdown and restarted the computer and I was again logged in to the temporary profile I came back home around after uni and booted the computer and ran the disc checkup The computer restarted afterwards and then gave me the options startup repair or start windows normally I selected start normally but it returned to the HP screen then gave me the two options again I ve tried to do startup repair but it just stops at the blue background with the mouse only moveable None of the advanced options seem to work either such as safe mode etc I ve tried starting the HP recovery system but that doesn t work too In short Stupid design student was not thinking forced shutdown lead to temporary login disc check on startup and now an infinite loop of start windows and startup repairs that don t work The HP pavilion came installed with Windows so I have no idea how to boot from a disc or usb Please help I have five projects due before end of semester which is in two weeks p s I really really do not know much about computers please keep instructions as precise and simple as possible thank you

A:Windows 7 won't start up constantly left with startup repair or start windows normally options.

The next day, I booted the computer to find a message at the beginning about running a disc check. I skipped it and proceeded with the normal booting.Hello and Welcome -Have you ever let the diskcheck run the full range ?? It runs 5 stages, takes about 1 hour, and will not harm your system. If you wish to run the check, it may cancel the restart problems - Please follow these directions >>Start your computer in Normal Mode -Run a Disk Check on your C: drive in Windows :•Click Start and open Computer•Right-click on C: (or your Hard drive letter) and select Properties•Click on the Tools tab•Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button•Mark the 2 boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors•Click on the Start button•When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and >> Restart your computer•Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys so that it is allowed to do soAllow about 1 hour (on average) for the check to complete and it will Reboot itself back to Normal Mode -Next -Go - Start > Programs > Accessories > Find Command Prompt > Right click and select Run as Administrator > Then type sfc /scannow > Press Enter - Note the space between c and / > Allow about 15 to 20 minutes (on average) -This will Check System Files against original installation -Try these 2 simple procedures first to rule out any basic problems - They will not remove or alter any data that you have completed -Thank You -Edit for Spelling -

I have a Lennovo 580 laptop with windows 8.1. Months ago I installed the Windows 7 desktop. The START button has suddenly stop working - i.e., nothing happens when I click on it. I have shut down and restarted the computer but that hasn't helped.

Any suggestions out there?

Hello SevenForums, long time lurker here.
I've had a issue with my windows 7 explorer's toolbar not displaying icons of all applications (.exe files).
I've tried to depict the issue in the images (a,b) below

(a)

(b)
The only instance wherein I see icons are when I click a file associated with the software,
For example, a .mp4 video associated with VLC media player shows the VLC icon in the toolbar properly

I've googled to fix this for a few months now, but I haven't managed to yet.
So now I turn to your expertise, please help

A:Windows Explorer's Toolbar Fails to load application Icons

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
FWIW I get the same thing for .exe files I don't believe it's a real issue because .exe files execute and do their own thing meaning if the developer didn't make an icon for the operation it might show that icon instead of the actual icon it shows other places like in your image cpuz,
Rufus does this too for it's .exe that I just noticed.

Some startup items do not load on windows startup unless I logoff and then logon again.
This happens almost all the time whenever I startup my PC from a complete shutdown.
All startup items are properly checked in msconfig. These are the items:

Adobe CS6 Service Manager
Adobe Updater Startup Utility
Classic Shell
Delayed launcher
Desktop Coral
EagleGet Downloader
Google Chrome
Intel(R) USB 3.0 Monitor
Microsoft Security Client
Realtek HD Audio Manager

Hello

When i turn on my laptop, the Windows toolbar does not always open/show the speaker and wireless network icon, when explorer.exe is opening (only about 50% of the time). This means i cannot connect to the internet, when this happens. When i go to the network options, the wireless network adapter says it is "not connected", and it is not possible to make it connect. The only solution i have found, is to restart the laptop, and hope explorer.exe opens the wireless network icon this time.

I do not think it is a driver problem, as it seems like it is the Windows toolbar that is bugging. It is like it "forgets" to open half of the icons.. I have been searching different forums, but i can't seem to find a solution :/

I have embeddeda screenshot of the icons that do not open at startup:

A:The windows toolbar does not open my wireless network at startup

See how the icons are configured
Right click the taskbar
select properties
on the taskbar tab
in the notifications area section (middle of the dialog) - click the customize button
what are the Behaviors for Volume and Network?

If you want them to always show - set the behavior to "Show icon and notifications"

there are two other things you might want to try on this dialog
1 - always show all icons and notifications
2 - restore default icon behavior

If those suggestions fail - try searching SevenForums tutorial section.

good luck.

Are you talking about the button on the front panel of the computer? It might be a worn/broken springYou could try carefully spraying a small amount of WD-40 around the button perimeter The desired way would be to pop the front bezel off and clean/fix it from the inside

This thread will be geared towards how to get your start button back in Windows 8. It's a pain in the bleep but everybody stay vigilant and keep up the good fight with W8. I will post much more tomorrow as I'm in bed right now but if anybody is interested just google or bing start button for Windows 8. There are ways to set it in the actual OS settings or install a separate program to get it back but it is very possible. Will post more tomorrow!!

Needs Button Start in Who quite a few new folks lately so I thought I'd point them to the easy way Especially since everyone misses the old Start Menu Also there's a quot rep quot button you can choose if you want to add something nice for the author s of these toolbars Note that I have Windows installed and Microsoft's excuse for a start menu is first in line that's OK better than the Windows way to get there After that there's Programs and then Quick Launch To install the Programs Toolbar first unlock the Taskbar then follow the instructions Who Needs a Start Button in Windows 8.1? in this link Start Menu Toolbar - Create on Windows Taskbar to create your Programs Toolbar I didn't go all the way to quot startmenu quot I stopped at Programs Programs is all the way over to the right it was in mine anyway Grab the handle triple line of vertical dots and pull it all the way over to the left right next to Microsoft's link to Metro Go to the other side and push everything all the way over to the left until only Programs and gt gt are showing You can now lock the Taskbar or if you want to keep going To install Quick Launch unlock the Taskbar then follow the instructions in this link Quick Launch - Add to Taskbar in Windows Instructions are given to move Quick Launch to where you want it With a little effort these two toolbars along with Microsoft's excuse for a Start Button will be all you need All my installed programs are on the Programs bar and those I use most are kept on Quick Launch which is even faster but not by much than the Programs bar

A:Who Needs a Start Button in Windows 8.1?

Sometimes Programs create a whole array of shortcuts that cannot be easily re-created on a jumplist or toolbar like that. Some of the professional programs I install and maintain are that way, there is no "exe" file, it's a shortcut to a file with command line arguments. It's easy enough to drag the created shortcuts to the desktop, but only if they can be found in the Start Menu.

If you don't have a bunch of programs that are like that, then what you suggest is fine.

Actually I already have 2 toolbars like that I made. The Problem with Toolbars, is that they take a while to populate when you click on them. If they are links to files, its faster, but links to shortcuts really take a long time to appear on my system.

Today I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (I think that's the version). I was pretty much forced to do the update. Now, my start button is completely gone and replaced with something that takes me to the Windows 8 screen, which I absolutely hate, because I can't control anything on it. I have installed a utility that let's me use the desktop, and it basically looks like Windows 7, which worked perfectly fine. It seems like all my apps are gone and this new button is linked only to the Windows 8 screen. How can I get my Windows 7 profile back???

Thanks everyone!!

Hello ryguy,

Reinstalling whatever app you originally installed that added the Start button should add it back.

I have an older pentuim 2 with a lot of junk on it. It was put together by somebody for me. I was deleting software that I didn't think I needed and next time I booted it up the control bar on the bottom disappeared. I am not sure if it is called the control bar but the gray bar where the "start" button is is gone and the only way I can do anything on it is to press control alt delete and run tasks that way. What happened? Most programs like aol and print shop work this way but I noticed that Internet Explorer will not boot up. I have tried re installing IE but it still will not run. the hard drive makes some noises than just stops and leaves me with the blank screen. If anybody has an idea of what I can do please help me.

If you run explorer.exe from the Task Manager -- does it appear?

Can you do a System Restore, following this method:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304449

Can you post a Hijackthis scanlog for the system if all else fails?

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

If the system had any programs that alter the Explorer shell (such as Stardock), and files for that program were deleted -- you might see the problem you described. Properly uninstalling the program might resolve it.

You might also want to try running chkdisk /f on the drive.

So that we don't need to click the invisible place in the taskbar And there would be a button on which we will click to go to the metro ui start menu. (This would help windows 8 to look great..)

If we will click on the start button
Then We can get The Start Screen.

Perhaps he's talking about the feature that lets you "Autohide" the task bar. Right click the Task Bar and select properties and the Auto-Hide the Taskbar box that you can check. Try that and see if you like it-some do, some don't.

Hi guys, I've just recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1564. Everything was working well for the past two weeks until yesterday night - Windows hanged and I was forced to restart the notebook.

Now this morning, everytime I bring up the Windows Start button, I can't click anything on the menu - and I can't even log off Windows from there. I tried and can't log off using Ctrl+Alt+Delete as well.

Can someone please help/advice what could be the cause to this problem? I left my notebook in Sleep mode most of the day yesterday while I run some errands but there was nothing running in it at that time and it definitely didn't overheat although I did left the power adapter plugged in (I forgot to turn it off)

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

Windows 8.1 start button changes to what exactly when clicked and nothing happens ? Any system restore points before this happened, if so go back to one see if it resolves it. How where you able to shutdown the laptop, from the Metro start screen ?

Added any software, drivers or hardware recently ?

Why don't you also try to run System File checker, go to the metro start screen, click all apps, right click the Command Prompt and copy paste this and press enter

sfc /scannow

Same command prompt copy and paste this and press enter

Is anyone aware of a way to add a Start Button to the desktop. To be specific what I want is just a button, essentially like the windows button on the keyboard or the button of the charms bar, except on the desktop.

I want the button to open the current windows 8 start menu, not the previous windows menu. I would love for this button to be on the taskbar/quick launch menu, where the traditional button was. I feel that the easiest way would be to rightclick the desktop and use the create a shortcut thing, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that.

Any ideas?? Or forums with this solution that I've missed? All I can find is how to get the traditional start menu back.

Hello all,

I have a question for those who are more experienced than me.

I use either a 16'' 16:9 aspect ratio monitor on my laptop, or an external 22'' 16:10, and i've found that i can make much better use of it if a put the Taskbar on one side(left). This was easy enough, just unlock it and then, drag and drop. But now the Start Button wound up in the upper left corner of my screen.

Does anyone know if I can "mirror" the sidebar, so that the Start button ends up in the lower left corned, where it usually is, and of course, keep the Taskbar vertical, on the left side of my desktop?

Also how one might go about doing that?

Many thanks in advance,

Paul

OK, so we didn't get the fully functional Start Button back but this free utility will help you make the most of it:

I am currently using it to modify my own 8.1 Start Button. Here is my work in progress:

A:My Windows 7 Start button has disappeared.

Has the entire Taskbar disappeared? What do you mean, you "scrolled down"? Are you using a smallhandheld device with a small screen? If so, that makes all thedifference in the nature of the problem and how to fix it. What kind of computer are you using? (Make and model) What kind of display? (Monitor make and model) What pixel dimensions is the video output set to? -- Jeff, in Minneapolis

Hey guys,

Well I absolutly hate that the start button is gone. Nothing is faster than pushing the windows key and then typing something to find it in your comp.

I saw some 3rd party programs that bring back the start button but the one that I installed (cant remember the name) was somewhat slow and too a while to load. What is the best start button replacement you guys have found?

A:Best Windows 8 Start Button Replacement?

"Best" is going to be a very personal selection -- based more on what each person wants, than features the replacement provides.

I've seen several ...

Stardock's Start8 uses the built-in Win8 feature to display a metro screen containing all the apps. While a start button replacement, it's not a Win7-like replacement.

Of these latter types, the one I like the most (so far) is ViStart for Win8. It gives me a Start panel that is very much like the one in Win7.

A similar one is StartMenu Win7 v4.22. From the screenshot I saw of this, it supported transparency quite well -- which my old Tablet PC doesn't support, which is why I like it less than ViStart.

But, like I said, these are going to be very subjective choices.

Start Button (is it still called that?) & Windows Key Not Working.

I've seen other posts about this (example), but there doesn't seem to be any reason given for the problem. I've got this issue on a clean Windows 10 install.

A:Start Button & Windows Key Not Working?

I checked Microsoft's drivers for your keyboard and there aren't any for Windows 10 or even 8 which may be the reason why your having this problem.

Sooner or later the manufacturer of <random> device stops producing updated drivers.

Hi
My client was on windows 8 with everything running perfectly and then the client upgraded to windows 8.1.
We then proceeeded to get pastel working over the network and we needed to uninstall the current Pervasive and Install the workgroup edition. Once we did that we noticed that the start button on the task bar was not responding so we restored the backup which was done after thae pervasive installation.
Even since the 8.1 upgrade AVG2014 was giving compatibility errors saying it needs to be reinstalled.
I then installed AVG2015 which installed successfully but the start button on the bottom left of the task bar doesn?t work anymore

Any help will be greatly appreciated

A:Windows XP Missing Start Menu Toolbar

You could try restarting the computer and start tapping F8 on boot up and choose Last Known Good to restore a copy of the registry. Or you could run a repair on XP by booting off of the XP CD and choosing “NOT” the first repair option, but the second repair option. This will install XP overtop of itself. You will not loose anything existing on your system. It will however replace any missing files and overwrite any corrupt files.

Go HERE to find out how.

Windows users have been customizing their desktops in a variety of ways for years. Whether by downloading themes and backgrounds, or using third party applications to change more obscure settings like the default logon screen, many people seem intent on personalizing every aspect of their operating system to something that fits their individual taste. And what better to alter than an icon that's always visible?

I know there is a novo button can do this, so I used a pin to push the novo button and started the system recovery. However, it stucked at the initiating stage and never progress. Does anybody know what I can do to make this laptop usuable? Thanks very much!

It adds exactly 2 features. There is a button to click on instead of just going to the corner and clicking on the small tile that appears. Right-click adds exactly one feature, an easy way to shutdown/reboot.

It does not provide the nice compact well organized Start Menu of Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows. Fortunately Classic Shell and others still provide full featured start buttons/menus.

I installed an Windows Pro 8 to 8.1 Pro x64 on a desktop computer. Both were clean installations, no other software was installed. With Window 8.1 Pro, the start button worked for a day after all the updates, then booted the computer. Now, if I try to right
click on the Start button with the mouse; nothing happens. Thinking it was a virus, I used Windows Defender to search to the for a virus and nothing found. No other Windows updates to fix the problem! To me it just another glitch in Windows!

I updated a laptop at the same time with Windows 8 to 8.1 X64, not the Pro version. The laptop was a OEM version of Windows 8. The laptop works fine with Windows 8.1 after upgrading it.

Hi,
Please try to copy WinX folder under C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows into C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows.
If it doesn't work, please run following command to repair system:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
If the issue persists, let's test the issue in New user account.
If all these steps doesn't fix your issue, please capture the actions during this process by using Process Monitor:

Does anyone know how to fix this? Yesterday when I went to change my windows theme, the start button automatically changed to some kind of default orb. Not the one that came with windows, but a custom one. One that I didn't even download. When I try changing it back it stays the same but it tells me that it changed it. I tried restarting and that didn't help. I tried manually changing it and got the same result. The only thing I know is that this happened after I installed a custom theme and then uninstalled it; and after I had used window blinds to change back my custom theme after uninstalling the one through control panel before.

Microsoft has decided to bring back the "Start button" in Windows 8.1, that's why they have included start button windows 8.1 preview. But that button is not actually a start button. The classic multi-step application launcher is that we have seen in windows 7 and earlier versions of Microsoft windows is still missing. Windows 8.1 Start Button is just a short-cut to the windows 8's start menu.

A:Windows 8.1 preview with fake Start button

True. IMO the button is good (I use the Windows Logo key, but that doesn't work if using a touch screen) but could have been named "[All] Programs."

Maybe in Windows 8.2 they'll add a "QA" button for the Quick Access menu.

I cannot find a fix for my 8.1 start button.
It works when I move the task bar to the top, right or left but not at the bottom. I ran all windows updates and there are no missing/unknown drivers in device manager. No errors in the event log. I've restarted multiple times and created a new local profile.
I've also tried:
Copy WinX folder under C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows into C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Any ideas? I would prefer not to do a clean install. Thanks in advance.

A:Windows 8.1 - Upgrade from 8, Start Button Does Not Work

Yes, when the taskbar is at the bottom of the screen, I cannot left click on the start button. The machine is also a
touch-screen, which does work when I touch the start button.

Sounds like my problem with right-click on that object with my pen. The only way I can make the pen do a right-click there is by filtering it through a Magnifier Lens (e.g. Win-+, Ctrl-Alt-L) moved there using the Touch Magnifier. My real mouse
has no trouble there, just my pen... WTH? Now it's working? Oh. Just remembered. I have Multi-touch driver disabled ATM. Leaves pen working but not touch. I didn't realize that as a result the pen was now working
better than it had. So no need to use Touch Magnifier any more. In fact, now it seems more difficult to use the Start button right-click menu with the Touch Magnifier overlaying it. YMMV. What would we do if an OS didn't have its quirks
to learn? <eg>

Hello,

Does anyone else occasionally have the windows start button not work? Sometimes ill try and click on it and it does not do anything, it doesn't highlight or respond to right and left clicks. I have to use the windows key on the keyboard and when this happens i also cant close applications by dragging from the top to bottom. No bar appears at the top with the minimize/maximize buttons and exit button, i have to go to desktop and right click the app on the taskbar and exit that way. Anyone got any ideas what would cause this?

A:change windows start button icon

You should be able to change it in the same way you'd change the icon manually in Windows 7 Home Premium+ [Sure you can't use programs because they weren't designed for basic and starter]. What you do is get Reshacker and go to your explorer.exe .... you know what I don't know if it would be in the same location so just send me a copy of your explorer and the start button you want and I'll see what I can do.

Yeah I read about that yesterday. There's also a rumor that there will be a setting that will allow you to go directly to the desktop. These are supposed to appear in Windows 8.1 which is rumored to be released as an update in the fall (possibly Sept.).
