Deleting Users With Admin Privileges

Q: Deleting Users With Admin Privileges

When users with admin privileges have ownership of files and folders, do those files and folders remain, or are they deleted?

This question arises from having tried to copy my primary admin profile to that of a new (backup) admin user. During that tedious and unsuccessful process, I had to change ownership and privileges of a number of folders and files, and now some of my programs are having trouble finding needed files. So rather than wading through everything and changing the settings back, I'd prefer to delete the new admin user -- as long as I won't lose the files.

Does that even make sense? (It's way past my bedtime!)

Preferred Solution: Deleting Users With Admin Privileges

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Make copys of all the files you want to keep or use an admin account and pull the files onto the account you wish to keep then delete the old one. As long as you have a copy that you have privileges to on the account you are going to keep you should be fine, just make sure to keep a copy of all the files that you can get into.

As you can see from the screenshot, somehow I have acquired a partition of unallocated space of approx 195 GB...I want to delete this partition, adding the extra GB to my main, OS:C partition, but I cannot figure out how to do it...Can someone help? Thanks a lot,

A:Deleting Unallocated Space Partition

It is already deleted, that is why you can't.

What you can do is grow your C partition into that space (forget whether it is called merge or grow or expand).

Do you know how to increase my C drive without deleting some important data or programs? In fact, yesterday, when I attempted to install a newly download program, a message popped out and told me there was a low disk space problem. I had also checked my C drive space. There was really 597MB of free space left. So, I just want to increase this drive successfully. Do you how I can do that? Any advice could be greatly appreciated here. Thank you!

I made a 35Gb ::X drive and I do not need it/don't remember the password lol and I was wondering if I could delete that so I can get that space back?

I believe you can reformat that partition and lose the data on it but reclaim the space. I'm just going from memory here so I might be wrong.

Hi Friends ... I have this laptop that has been given to me by my company and the USB ports have been blocked in manner such that I can copy stuff from my USB drive on to the machine but cannot copy in the reverse direction, ie. from the hard drive to the USB. Obviously it is to safeguard against theft of data. However, I do not deal with any confidential data and like to back up things every few days. Please tell me a shortcut to unlock my USB entirely even though I do not have administrator rights on the machine.

Sorry, we will not assist in circumventing such security features, especially when the machine belongs to someone else.

I need the laptops at my office to have a static IP address for security purposes and identification. However, some employees take their laptops home in the evening. If I have the Wi-Fi configuration set to use a static IP address, how can they have a dynamic IP address at home?. All are using windows 7 . Nearly 10 - 15 person have laptop. Its for using in an office at qatar. Now all are getting internet with dynamic ip.

A:Want to make static IP for Wi-Fi users

Reserve the IPs by MAC address on your DHCP server. That way they can leave their machines set to DHCP managed IPs and still get the same one each time.

My PC says a shared drive is full and I spent a few hours yesterday deleting and zipping files; but this morning it still says it is full.

I attach screenshot from treesize ? not sure why bottom-left says H: has 21% free but pie-chart says 99%.

In Windows Explorer, right-clicking on the drive shows 321gb free and 1.18tb used (which I think are the same figures as before my mammoth file deletion exercise yesterday).

Windows Explorer shows recycle bin as empty.

Hi, Just installed new 500gig Seagate sata hdd on computer, everything good. connected old 250 gig Seagate, now on startup, xp goes to chkdsk on F: and starts deleting the the files I want to keep. How can I set up the 2nd hdd as storage only?

Thanks in advance.

A:XP deleting files from second SATA HDD on startup

here is what i think it might be but u might wanna post a screen shot of the process using ur camera or cellphone camera to be sure what we're dealing with,
it might be re arranging files. HDD sorts file differently than u might think "i put my games in a folder then they're together physically" not true ur games folder could be scattered around the HDD's media and linked so u see them in the same place during a sudden shutdown "power out shutdown or restart using ur power\reset buttons" some files might be orphaned "lost its link to the others" so u dont see it in its place in that case chkdsk seeks those orphan files and reconnects them to their proper places so u when u open ur games folder u see all ur games there or some files wasnt saved properly so they get lost if ur pc suddenly shuts down and they remain as pieces they case some issues so chkdsk has to get rid of them.

A:RAID issue - deleting RAID volume to restore non-RAID disks

sadly, there's no way to do what you want without an existing backup.

Look at it this way;
A disk has a container ~ the partition.
The partition as a structure ~ the filesystem (eg NTFS, FAT32, RAID).
We put our data into the structure.

When we create backups, we are getting only the data itself (unless you use an image program like Ghost or Acronis where you get all three).

Deleting the RAID will give back the two independent HDs, but also breaks the structure so that the data becomes in accessible.

We've recently removed 2 printers from our network (a Konica and a HP). Whenever any user EXCEPT 'Administrator' logs in now, they get the below "Connect to Printer" error dialog box. I've made sure to remove the printer from Printers and Faxes, and even the drivers in 'Server Properties' (under the File menu in Printers and Faxes). They're all Windows XP SP3 and rebooted after removal of the drivers.

I even tried Bruce Sanderson's cleanup suggestion. To no avail.

Here's how the error dialog box looks:

---------------------------
Connect to Printer
---------------------------
Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server. For more information, click Help.
---------------------------
OK Help
---------------------------

I took a look at the suggested registry fix at this techspot discussion but I don't think it applies to our problem.

Anything else to try?

My ISP(BSNL) allow me to use 2.5 GB/month for a fixed charge on day time and unlimited free usage between (2AM-8AM), after that it starts billing for each extra MB I use. My system is used by 3 users , and therefore, the internet usage normally goes above 2.5 GB. It is an ADSL Broadband 256kbps/2mbps connection. So I want to limit the down loadable data for each user at day time alone(excluding night 2AM-8AM). Is there any software available to do this job? If available please let me know the good one.

Thanks in advance.

A:Limiting broadband usage for some users in my machine.

Wouldn't be better if you just asked your ISP to funnel back or choke off the speed during the peak times so that you could set up the computer to download during the Off peak time instead of the On-peak times.
Sorry I don't have any other information regarding programs that could restrict user profiles within Windows platform at least with the restricting it would not affect the Email system.

I am running an Intel H55HC motherboard with an i5-650 processor, using the on-processor graphics I get a 4.8 Windows User Experience rating using the DVI-D video connection. When I was running an ATI 1950 Pro graphics card, I was hitting 5.9. Is 4.8 about the best you can get with the onboard graphics? I want to use the onboard or on-processor graphics for the HDMI connection. I have installed the latest driver.

A:Intel H55HC, i5-650, DVI-D, 4.8 Win. Users experience?

4.8, (Windows Aero), is the same number I pull from an i3-530 / H-55 Gigabyte combination. The gaming score is a bit higher @ 5.2. That said, the earlier Intel GMA-4500, (P41 chipset IGP), only made 3.5, Aero & Games). So, the "Core i" graphics are indeed quite an improvement, at least for HTPC work.

The "Core i" CPUs will run hi-def content successfully, and that was the design objective. The ability to run "Crysis", likely never came up as an outcome.

These new CPU integrated graphics were never intended to put ATI or Nvidia out of business, and without a doubt, they never will.

I thought that the "Windows Experience Rating", was independent of whichever digital connection you were using. You should receive the same rating, regardless of whether you're using HDMI, DVI, or even "Display Port". There's not much to any video bandwidth difference between DVI and HDMI, but HDMI collaterally carries 7 channel sound, as well as the picture. Incidentally, the sound co-driver is incorporated into the video graphics driver, for this very reason.

easy way is to use your router to see All Attached Devices; you get the IP, Mac address and sometimes the System Name.

A:Adaptec's 1205SA users, here's what I sent to Adaptec

I succefully updated the BIOS on my card(It boots faster now). Here's what I've done:

using UPDBIOS utility, I typed "Adaptec SATA Host Controller 1205SA" after selecting 2 lines title and changed subsystem vendor to 9005 and Subsystem Product Id to 0250, what seem to be the Adaptec IDs from the original driver INF file.

For the driver, I modified the INF files a bit.

To update your BIOS, you will need the latest driver. I still got no news from Adaptec(I post the mail 4 hours ago) letting me know that they'll post the new BIOS on their site, so flash it only if you're REALLY sure you want to because if they don't, you will ruin your warranty.

For the driver, download this :
http://12.24.47.40/display/2n/kb/article.asp?aid=10471 (In the right frame)
and extract the content of driver-custom over it. Also, you will have to copy si3112.sys and name the copy si3112.mpd for win9x/me. I haven't had time to correct this bug from the older version INF file, which isn't in the new one.

BIOS is in the ZIP file. Flash it from the control panel SiliconImage ATA Controllers.

A:HP Mini admin password unknown

You need to talk to HP, after changing the registered ownership, and may need a document about the fate of the previous owner. You may have to send it to a certified HP service center with a formal notice of change of ownership included.
As for TechSpot, there is a policy to not provide assistance with passwords.
What you want to do is usually very difficult in the best of circumstances.

I have Linksys wireless-G broadband router. When surfing the web, while being the only one online at home, internet pages will open almost instantaneous. The pc that i use is directly connected to the router. There is also another pc as well as 2 laptops that connect wirelessly. The internet signal strength is reduced drastically when multiple users are online at the same time. My router is keyed/pass protected and additional unauthorized users is not a problem. I have no idea what kind of signal the router is putting out. I have noticed when playing an online game my latency will go from <100ms and shoot as high as 1.2k-2k. Again ive noticed that latency is high when multiple people are online.

What can i do to troubleshoot this? Is there any way that i can get the signal to boost as more of it is utilized? thx

the short answer is no.

for a start see http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic141987.html#4

Bandwidth control is difficult with our cheap routers -- the professionals have features
that are seldomly available to home users. Look to see if QoS is supported in your router; if present you *may*
be able to configure it.

You currently have
Code:

modem ---- router#1 ---wired system(A)
|
+ - - - - WiFi (B + C systems)

With that layout, all systems will see all traffic ; system A will see but not process packets from system C.
Not all routers use Switch technology -- see if yours does. If not add a switch
Code:

modem ---- router#1 ---(switch*) --- wired system(A)
|
+ - - - - WiFi (B + C systems)

This will reduce traffic from the router to system(A). Everything attached to the
switch* side will only see its own traffic.

If I were using WiFi, this would be my layout
Code:

modem ---- router#1 ---(switch) --- A/P - - - WiFi (B + C systems) wired system(A)
|
+---- wired system(A)

Here, ALL systems only see their own traffic

In all cases, router#1 provides the initial NAT to allow multiple systems to share the single ISP connection.

A:HP 6730B bios admin password problem

hi,
I asked for the same problem in this forum but my threat was deleted with the suggestion to read the Forum FAQs.
I read them but I didn't find why they did it. So I want repeat the question adding it to the yours one:

HP CompaQ nx9005
hash code [ 15656]
I need the system password

I wrote and I just wrote again at the hp forum about it whitout any help, and the hp chat doesn't start because of a bag (I'm not the only one having this problem).

I read all messages of the reference topic about the same problem (as suggested) but I didn't find my needs.
I think I will have to ask about it a lot of time. Hope to find someone who can help me.
thanks

OK, my subject line might sound cryptic! Here is my set up: first router (main) is connected to the cable modem and provides std addresses as 192.168.1.2 (base is 192.168.1.1) etc. I have a second router (same brand) as a gateway connected to my main. This second router base address is 10.10.10.1 and all that are connected to this one have manually provided IP addresses (such as 10.10.0.2, etc). The main one provides WIFI access as for the second one do not.

Now my question: from my laptop who uses the WIFI network, how can I reach or connect to the other network (the one that is managed with the router with the 10.10.10.1 address? The purpose? I would like to access the computer connected to it as if they were part of the WIFIed network. And be able to access the router management page. Any clue?

A:Cascading routers - how to access admin features from one to the other?

first some basics;

examine the router (the box itself). everything attached to a LAN slot will default to
routing upwards using the WAN slot -- that's a big clue as to what the routing tables looks like.

second; to manage the configuration of a specific router:
a) WIRE a system directly to it
b) login to the router config page using the current router's ip-address

if your network is
modem---router#1----router#2---router#3

then a system attached to routerX will route upward to router(X-1) and NOT downward to router(X+1)

if you wish to have ALL systems (wired and wireless) see and share with each other, then you have too many distinct address.
Leave router#1 as is. disconnect router#2 from #1 and wire router#1 to a LAN port on router#2, leaving its WAN port empty. Log into router#2 and disable DHCP.

Now do the same for the wire from #2-->#3 and disable#3 DHCP.

All systems (wired or WiFi) will get ip-assignments from router#1 and will be able to
ping and share files.

A:How To Watch What Other Users On My Network Doing?

all you can really do is open up the router logs to see the traffic and what websites/IP addresses were visited etc.
At 4am i presume she is the only one using the net at that time, so its not hard to filter out.

A:Deleting an IRQ?

Hi

on boot up look for a message that says

"to enter BIOS press F2 or DEL" or "to enter setup press ...."

In BIOS look for something that says "plug and play OS" and see if its set to yes, if not change it to yes

Windows should and will sort out any IRQ faults by sharing IRQ's.

On my desktop computer I dragged my My Documents folder to my flash drive.
Then I wanted to delete a sensitive file from the folder in the flash drive only and did so.

But when I checked in the computer hard drive I found that the file had been deleted there also.

I went to the recycle bin and restored the deleted file.
But now my flash drive has lots of other files there that I did not put there.

I thought that deleting a file in the flash drive would delete it there only. How can I do this?

Why did so many files appear on the flash drive when I restored only one?

I am considering erasing the flash drive on my laptop which does not contain the sensitive file.

That's a new one

Sounds as though you must have created a shortcut to your My Documents folder files
Plus, due to synchronization, anything removed from the flash drive also removed the file in your local My Documents
Next time, only copy\paste the files you actually want to store on your flash drive within My Documents folder

Also restoring files, seems to have restored many files in My Documents, being on the Flash Drive too (or worse -> only)

My documents should not be dragged anywhere
The specific contents, possibly yes (but My Documents carries many other common default files as well, coming from All Users profile too  )

Hi all having successfully cleansed said laptop from various nasties thanks in part to Kimsland and Bobbye i have an issue with the admin login Ok when booting up xp is set to fast user switching and the welcome screen login screen with user accounts Administrator is not included in the list So i hit ctrl alt del twice which then brings up the secure login dialog box So i key in Administrator and the Pavilion DV1000 login? HP admin password that i set and it comes up with quot Unable to log you on HP Pavilion DV1000 admin login? because of an account restriction quot WTF is that The only way i can log in as admin is to reboot into safe mode when it presents itself as another user in the welcome screen list giving in total which quite frankly is ridiculous The main reason the lappy was infected was due to uneducated users installing all kinds of crap as their accounts had admin rights I need to restrict them to limited accounts whilst having full access to the admin account without the need to reboot into safe mode I ve google searched for answers but couldn t find any I m looking for a way to solve this issue so with respect please don t come back with workarounds like quot press shift right-click run as kind of suggestions because i m after full access to admin account without rebooting So any help you can offer would be most appreciated thanks nbsp

A:Exchange is deleting mail from ISP server

This is one of those areas where a bit of reading is necessary. An Exchange Server reference for Exchange 2000, 2003, or 2007 would be invaluable for you. This is not an area where a few notes will put you on the way to a quick fix. Like any server software, you have entered a new world that will require an investment in reading time... and not something that can easily be posted on TechSpot. Sorry.

Your working too hard at the objective. There's a Shared Documents fold that is intended to be shared by everyone.

Under the All Users, there's the \Shared Documents; everyone has read/write/delete

Cannot Login to Netgear DG834G router wirelessly from Dell Laptop

Hi heres hoping you can help me.

I have a wireless connection through a Netgear DG834G from a Dell M6300 running Windows XP which is working fine with respect to accessing the internet..

I also have a desktop (wired to the router) which is also running fine.

The problem is that I cannot log into the router wirelessly as Admin on 192.168.0.1
I can login to the router as Admin from the wired PC, but not the laptop !!
I get to the login screen to input password but when pressing enter the login box just re-appears with the password field blank again.
I know the password entered is correct and accurate as it works from the wired desktop

(note: I have changed my laptop recently from HP to Dell, I was able to access the router wirelessly as Admin to perform maintenance with the HP model)

Any ideas ?

A:Cannot connect to wireless router as admin wirelessly

Are all the settings correct for the wireless laptop.
encryption method WEP, WPA, WPA2
passwords

Does the router even see this new laptop?
Do you still have the older laptop?
Check to see if the DELL firewall is disabled under Windows, make sure it off.
Try opening up a session: ping 192.168.0.1
Does the laptop get IP by DHCP,

ipconfig /release wait.... ipconfig /renew wait... try it again does work then
try static IP then do ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns

If all still doesn't work try..
re-joining the wireless router
disconnect using the wireless in range method on the laptop
reconnect but remove the password then re-do it then click on connect see if the wireless laptop can connect.
If it does reboot the laptop and login with your login ID password
Now open the browser and see if you can get into your router
Make sure you do not have any spyware or popup blocker active..

So far no luck fixing this one or my Toshiba and have both been reduced to eeprom reset as only viable option.

A:Restrict Users/Computers on XP Pro Network

Yes this is real easy

You state you have Shared drives/folders
These are the only drives /folders that you must be concerned about

Either unshare them (right click on the shared folder and remove the share)
Or password protect them (right click on the shared folder and put a password in sharing)

This is done from the shared folders computer

Also if you have temp come in you might want them to use the guest account only (a lot safer) The guest account cannot change or edit any user settings

To do this - go to User Accounts (in Control Panel) and enable the guest Account
You can also password protect all accounts in there as well (this is will also affect sharing)

Log off the computers with the new Guest account, and log into the new guest account.

And write down every password you use. I always just use ONE, it's easier to remember - but never give it out!

"The read/write heads are detaching from the arm and plowing deep gouges into the magnetic platter," explained Retrodata Managing Director Duncan Clarke. "The damage is mostly on the inner tracks, but some scratches are on the outer track -- Track 0 -- and once that happens, the drive is normally beyond repair."

The problem is found on the Seagate 2.5-in. SATA drives that are made in China and are loaded with firmware Version 7.01. Model numbers affected include ST96812AS and ST98823AS.

Was wondering if anyone else has the M2N-SLI Deluxe, if so what is the highest processor I can install on this mobo with a bios version 0404. With ram prices at all time lows right now I'm thinking about upgrading my processor at the same time. I would like to get something like a X2 5000+ but I wanna know first if a M2N-SLI DLX can take that on a bios 0404.

A:Any M2N-SLI Deluxe users out there?

I have an M2N32-SLI-Deluxe Wireless Edition, which is no different to the M2N32-SLI-Deluxe, except with this antenna i can use to connect to other computers wire free. I also have a AMD AM2 X2 5000+ and it rocks

Are you talking about the M2N32-SLI, or just the M2N-SLI. Is it an 939 socket or AM2. If its an AM2, than you are pretty much future proof, you can even upgrade to Barcelona with the AM2 socket later this year. But if you on a 939, than I guess you can go anywhere from an X2 3600+ to a X2 6000+

I recently bought a dell inspiron 6400 N series computer from a fellow soldier who left to return to the states. I was planning on using this computer for movie watching and to save pictures on to send to family. I went to turn it on one day after using it for a week and the computer started up to a screen that asked me for an administrator password. I did not receive this password or do not have knowledge of one that was saved. I cannot use this laptop and I was just starting to enjoy it! This was my way to have some down time away from this place. Can someone try and help me please? I tried to email rustam_ but got no reply. I tried to go to different websites but found no help. Someone please help me! I would really appreciate it.

A:Lost Admin Password in IRAQ help Dell6400 Inspiron

I'm assuming this is a windows password we're talking about here, and that you're running XP. If it is asking you for a BIOS password (black screen, white text), then you're probably screwed, unless there is a BIOS reset jumper within easy reach. If not, have fun opening the entire laptop to find it.

If it gets to windows and wants a password, try this:

grab either active password changer (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/Active-Password-Changer.shtml)

or

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/)

Follow the instructions closely and there's a good chance one of the two will work.

I am looking for a little help. Here is what I am looking to do:

I am working on a Windows 2003 server. It is a Domain Controller so it holds a copy of the Active Directory. I have several security groups created - no distribution groups. I have another sever that serves as the file server. I want to know if there is a way to pick a security group and find every file or directory that they have access to.

If anyone knows of anything please land a hand.

Thanks,

A:WRNG: Dell users: Unmountable boot vol./Plz oh great mods, extend a "hand"

No need to feel like an *****.

First of all you can try using a windows 98 boot disk to boot to your CD. I'm not sure where that will get you, if you don't want to reinstall the OS (and lose everything).

Secondly, you shouldn't have a problem putting that HDD into an old computer and pulling the files off of it. Just make sure the jumper is set properly on the back of the drive (Master, Slave, or Cable Select). Plug it in and power it on, Windows should find the drive and allow you to transfer files.

As far as the error code goes and what can be done..... I don't have a great answer for you, but maybe someone else will. Just be patient and see what comes along.

I installed a new HDD today and when I went into the Windows setup to partition it, I accidentally deleted a partition on one of my other drives. This drive had ALL my pictures, music, movies and videos. EVERYTHING I had was on that disk.

Since I only deleted the partition, I would assume the information is still there. Is there anyway to recover this, or am I screwed?

TIA,

A:Is there anyway to recover data after deleting a partition?

You're in luck. As long as you haven't done anything else to the disk, you should be able to recover everything. Deleting the partition just deletes the partition table info, the original data is still there. Google some hard disk recovery tools. I used this once to recover from a similar problem.

You need software that can handle that, Windows can't naitively do that. An example would be Partition Magic, a Free example would be gparted.

Many of us get so anxious to charge into the arena, that the prompt for
agree / disagree on the End User License Agreement just gets the implicit agree
without reading or saving the information for later study.
this can lead to misunderstands and difficulty with your ISP.

The attachment is an excerpt from one ISP on the policy of personal servers from
a personal account. Professionally, this is what I've experienced here in S. California
from multiple ISPs, but that is not to say there are ISPs that might be more tolerant.

going to your ISPs website, the sitemap should give you a link to the Usage Policy
and the EULA.

the excerpt is in the attachment typical-EULA.txt

A:typical EULA for broadband users

Yes. That is pretty typical. Of course they're not going to provide support for anyone's network but their own, and they have to protect their services.

We recently got switched from Comcast to RoadRunner, and I was fairly surprised to see that RR only proscribes servers for what they call Enterprise - by which they mean any business purpose, whether for profit or not. They also prohibit providing member services to non-members. Most cable & dsl providers will sell their customers a home network solution, and provide limited support for it.

In practical enforcement, you will only attract the attention of the sysops if you use massive amounts of bandwidth.

But to answer your question, you could seriously screw the PC up if you just delete everything willy nilly, you need to use the add remove section of control panel.

You could just reinstall the OS , thats the definition of starting Over..lol

Last night since I was having slow/non-existent connection issues, I turned off the NAT option on my Belkin wireless G router. Immediately afterwards I lost internet connection as I expected but now can't connect to the config page @ 192.168.2.1 . I tried running the setup software again and it can't communicate with the router, either. Tried hitting the reset button several times, disconnecting the router, etc. but the config page still won't load. Is there anyway to manually revert the router back to factory settings?

A:Can't connect to admin page on Belkin Router

So this is with the pc connected directly to the router via an ethernet cable?
Go to My Network Places, and on the left theres a thing that says "show all UPnP devices" or similar. Click on it, then go to your LAN settings and set your IP address to auto, or 192.168.2.3 vice versa. Plug in/turn your router back on and it should come up as a network place. From that doubleclick it and enter admin etc..

The Samba Sever is for file sharing. You did not state the OS on the new PC, but if it's truley a
Samba Sever, it's likely to be some distro of Linux.
You can google for Linix domain controller and find a flock of articles like this

Ok firstly I should mention that one solution to this problem would be to plug the HD into my machine and use fsutil to reset the dirty flag However and pwd set unbootable to No dirty Need xp - flag admin I m a stubborn person and know that there must be a way of doing this easily without taking my machine to bits If I do it in what is for this occasion the hard way I will be able to save a little time in the future should the situation arise again I ve been asked to fix an unbootable computer I had intended to boot into the recovery console to issue chkdsk r fixboot and fixmbr commands Unfortunately I the admin password for the installation isn t available it s been forgotten rolleyes and so I can t log into it I used the offline NT password amp registry editor utility but because the drive is flagged dirty improper shutdown no doubt It won t change or blank the password So I got out my trusty NTFS DOS CD and booted into DOS taking a copy of FSUTIL with me which as expected doesn t work under DOS Hoping that the password was something simple ish I grabbed a copy of the SAM and Systemf files from system config and tried cracking the administrator password It seems that the password is at least characters and so will take an age to crack This leaves me with the option of resetting the dirty bit on the volume so that I can reset the admin password to blank boot into the recovery console and repair windows but I see no fsutil equivelant for DOS probably because NTFS was never meant Need to set dirty flag - No admin pwd and xp unbootable for DOS lol It occurs to me though that there must be some utility or other that ll do it or failing that various linux flavours Need to set dirty flag - No admin pwd and xp unbootable have NTFS support and should be able to do it - or possibly some sort of live recovery cd for windows Any ideas anybody All this for the sake of a single BIT of info on the hard drive A simple or It s outrageous lol nbsp Need to set dirty flag - No admin pwd and xp unbootable

I have a DLINK G604T wireless ADSL modem/router with 1 PC and 3 laptops hooked up to it.

Now, whenever any of the other network users are seeing a fair amount of internet traffic, whether downloading or uploading, this one particular laptop will experience very unstable internet. The other computers on the network have no problems whatsoever.

Basically, internet will start cutting out sporadically, eg. pages won't load/unavailable and MSN gets disconnected etc. Comes back on for a minute or two and cuts out again for a minute or so.

When the other computers on the network aren't doing much, this laptop doesn't experience any problems - internet is smooth as.

Bearing in mind that the wireless signal on the laptop shows up at EXCELLENT the whole time, what could be the problem? This is a brand new Asus M5 laptop with integrated WiFi.

Please help if you can, thanks.

Best regards,
Michael

A:Unstable internet when other network users are downloading

Maybe someone set the QoS on the router so that this laptop gets the lowest priority?

Of course the router has the latest firmware and your wireless adapter has the latest drivers? Right?

You should test whether you lose internet access or network connectivity. The difference is crucial. Next time you get disconnected, see if you can still access other loacal computers and/or the router.

Are you using DHCP? Try with static IP configuration.

My flatmate and I share an internet connection via a Linksys WRT54GS DSL router (wireless). Im connected directly to the router where as he is wirelessly connected.

The problem is if im on a game, and he decides to download somthing or visa versa then whoever is playing the game is interupted. I was wondering if theres a way of putting a speed cap on the internet of me and my friend but still keeping the network speed itself 54mbps (as we share music).

Many Thanks,

Alex

A:How do I restrict bandwidth usage of individual users on a DSL modem?

What generation WRT54 is it? Newer versions have bandwidth throttling builtin - just look around in the setup pages. And if you don't have the feature, then that's it - nothing you can do other than imposing limits in the downloading software itself.

I have been trying to solve a problem with my Audigy ZS PCI card If I record a sine wave at bit- k and set the recording level so that the peaks just reach full amplitude or VU then without changing the recording level if I change to bit- k and record the peaks are about lower Normally this wouldn t be much of an issue but if I try to increase the recording level the peaks clip at that level instead of the VU level one would expect As I understand it the Audigy initially digitizes at k If you want to record at a lower rate such as k the card has a recording sample rate converter SRC that resamples the k signal down to k In that process the audio level should remain constant and it has in many other SoundBlaster cards I have worked with But in my Audigy the level drops What I am seeing when I see clipping at of full scale at k is the actual VU digital clipping that had occurred at the initial k sampling The important thing to note is that this only happens with -bit recordings -bit is okay This becomes a problem because I SoundBlaster this users help Please simple test - me. to run cannot use the peak indicator on the VU meter to warn of clipping when recording at bit- k No matter the level the peak indicator will never light because the audio level never reaches VU I had tried other versions of Audigy ZS drivers and one version SoundBlaster users - Please run this simple test to help me. actually made the problem worse making k peaks clip at of full scale So this seems to be a driver issue related to the SRC process during recording I have been communicating with Creative s Advanced Support Group on this problem but they cannot duplicate it so they can t offer any help Here s how you can help There are about files involved in the Audigy driver set If you know the SoundBlaster users - Please run this simple test to help me. specific driver file s that affect recording SRC in the Audigy please let me know If I can isolate this to a file or two perhaps Creative can solve my problem It would be very helpful if you would run a simple test if you have an Audigy or any other SoundBlaster for that matter and report back here All you have to do is feed some audio in your line-in connector and begin recording at -bit K make sure of that setting Increase the audio level until it clips heavily Stop recording and look at your recorded waveform to verify that it is clipped at VU of the possible amplitude Now without changing the recording level change your recording setting to -bit k and record again Stop recording and look at the waveform Does it clip at the same level VU as the k recording or does it clip at a lower level about to lower than before I am using percentages because many recording software doesn t have a dB scale on the recorded waveform but it is very easy to estimate by eye if a waveform is or lower This proplem happens for me regardless of if I record from line-in or record a wave file being played back by Windows Media Player so it has nothing to do with the analog audio level at the line-in connector nbsp

A:SoundBlaster users - Please run this simple test to help me.

Summarized Request

So far a lot of readers, but no replies. If you don't want to read through all of the background information in the original post, just run the folowing test and report your results in a reply to this topic. I should only take you a few minutes. I would really appreciate your help.

2. It would be very helpful if you would run a simple test if you have an Audigy, or any other SoundBlaster for that matter, and report back here. All you have to do is feed some audio in your line-in connector and begin recording at 16-bit, 48K (make sure of that setting). Increase the audio level until it clips heavily. Stop recording and look at your recorded waveform to verify that it is clipped at 0VU (100% of the possible amplitude). Now, without changing the recording level, change your recording setting to 16-bit, 44.1k and record again. Stop recording and look at the waveform. Does it clip at the same level, 0VU, as the 48k recording, or does it clip at a lower level, about 5 to 10% lower than before?

I am using percentages because many recording software doesn't have a dB scale on the recorded waveform, but it is very easy to estimate by eye if a waveform is 5% or 10% lower.Click to expand...

I have a few programs (notably 3D Pinball, which irks me) that either load slowly, or do not function up to speed. I run AV and anti-spyware regularly, so I don't think those are the root cause.

On running SystemMechanic for duplicate files, I find many that were created before I even owned the computer. I know- some programs/systems were created some time ago, but?

My question is, how do I know which is a duplicate, and which should remain? There are scores of them, but here is an example:
C:\WINDOWS\ SERVICE PACK FILES\i386\wbemcore.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wbemcore(2)(2).dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wbemcore.dll

All were created on the same date, at the exact same time, and are the exact same size. As I said, there are many, many, similar files. Which to keep? Which to toss? How do I know?

Thanks for any and all insight--

A:Deleting duplicate (?) files

The ones with parenthesis are duplicates. Generally you want to keep the files in the service pack folder.

Different versions of the same libraries may cause you issues but that's another matter. Duplicate files do not affect the speed of your computer unless you are chronically low on disk space.

I would recommend some basic optimisations before going and messing with system files. Defragment, disable unneeded system services and background programs that hog your resources. Tune the pagefile, check that your hard drives are running at DMA speeds and haven't been downgraded to PIO. Make sure you have proper video card drivers installed.

Okay so I'm SUCH AN *****
And I deleted something called 'SoundMax' about a week ago...apparently I actually need that to have any sound on my laptop.
So if anyone knows how I can go about doing ANYTHING to get sound back on my laptop it would be sooo greatly appreciated because I miss my sound and don't know what to do

A:No more sound after deleting soundmax

have you tried reinstalling the soundmax and it's drivers.

this is the first thing you should have done.

Dear all:
I am trying to find a solution to make our warehouse process more efficiently. I figure that I need extra shipping servers (one more for UPS and one for FedEx). One way is to simply purchase two additional desktops and hook them up. Alternative choice would be get a software to host one computer for multi-users at same time.

I would like to know, if any of you ever have done this, is it worth doing? Any pro and con? Any recommanded software? I searched and found www.thinsoftinc.com has some cool stuff (although they charge you $99 per user license).

Thanks a bunch =)

A:Share one computer to multi-users simultaneously...Pro & Con?

Purely from a backup point of view, 2 separate units would be better. If UPS breaks down, you could ship your stuff using the FedEx PC (AND service) and vice versa.
Both on the same PC is asking for trouble if it should break down!

is it possible to see users who are using my wireless network? just to make sure no bastards are steeling off me lol

A:is it possible to see users who are using my wireless network?

It's easy enough to do. Browse over to your router, Under the setup screen, click on DHCP and there should be a button to "view DHCP clients" and that will tell you whos on, at least if you're on a linksys. Other routers normally all have some variation.

I have a new server running MS Win 2000 with 4 desktops running MS Win XP. The problem is when users are logged into the network they do not have any permissions to do anything! Can't write to the HDD, change date & time, create and save files!

I have given them every permission on the server I can think of, still no go. I also cannot make their logon ID's administrators (or power users) on their desktop. I have turned off the firewall on the desktops (router has a firewall).

I am at a loss on what to do next. This is critical for running the office!
Any help appreciated.

I have created a folder on a spare machine called users shared it.

In that folders i have put a folder for each user with there name as the
folder as their username.

And created the following script:

Dim objNet, strUserName

Set objNet = CreateObject("Wscript.Network")

strUserName =objNet.UserName

objNet.MapNetworkDrive "N:", "\\server\users\" & strUserName
WSCript.Quit

Saved as a vbs added to all the All Users/Startup so it runs and the drive
appears in My Computer. Perfect!

But i want the my document location to be set to that drive, how would i do
this rather than properties on each My Docs folder on every machine! Is
there a script or anyywhere in gpedit?

All machines including server run xp pro sp2.

TIA

A:Changing users' MyDocuments folder with a script (Is this possible?)

I think this is what you're trying to do: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=221837
If you are on a domain you can do folder redirection through GPO.

Hi,
I've got the platinum zs pro and the S750 speakers...just wondering if anyone has any tips on optimisation ? with regard to either system performance or just overall sound quality....the majority of use is listening to music...

this topic mite be a bit vague, but in case anyone out there has any rock solid tips they'd like to share, it could be useful

thanks!

A:Audigy2 ZS and GigaWorks S750 Users...

I don't own any of these audio products, but it might worth looking at TS's very own soundcard tweaking article here:

Hope this helps.
