I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you tried a a system file check to see if Windows can sort this issue out?
sfc /scannow (in admin mode.)
Also if you just explore the DVD do you see the list of files on it? Or is the DVD-R not 'seen' by Windows at all?
Or is the error only with the autoplay part? (Windows trying to help you choose a media player from whatever you have installed?)

Hello all,

I need some help please a year or so ago, I burned some personal movies of me and my bf on to a DVD-R DVD disc successfully. Since that time, I have viewed those movies on my VAIO laptop by playing the DVD-R cd on my laptop.

But now all of a sudden, when I try to watch the movies on my laptop by putting the DVD-R cd in my dvd rom drive, it shows nothing is on the cd I don't know what's up, it won't load anything or show anything. Although it does show that most of the space of 4gb is occupied.

Please suggest what I can do, I will be ever so grateful!

A:Cannot read DVD-R cd on my VAIO DVD ROM drive

First thing would be to try and read this disk with another disk drive on another computer. If that works, then try another DVD in your laptop. If another computer can't read the disk either, it looks like somethings happened to your disk unfortuntately :S and disk data recovery can be tricky, but it's good that it's showing the space on the disk being occupied.

Sony Vaio pcg-fr285M running XP Pro.

This laptop's CD drive (CD burner/DVD reader) will read some CD's -- most music disks -- and not others, mainly data disks, and disks it burned itself (when it was working). The disks it wont read, play fine on other machines.

Can anyone suggest how to get it working again?

A:Disk read error in vaio e series need serious help

I believe your Vaio has a hidden partition with recovery/repair options. You should have an "Assist" button above the keyboard on the right side. With the computer off, click Assist. It should open Vaio Care Rescue. From here you should have access to several repair options as well as a Recovery Wizard that can restore your machine to factory specs.

Another possibility is to turn your computer on and immediately start clicking the F10 key (top row of keyboard.) Keep clicking until Edit Boot Options window appears. If Edit Boot Options appears, click Enter and then select Recovery Wizard. If you want to return your machine to factory specs select Tools and click Start Advanced Recovery Wizard.

A third possibility is to try to access the Advanced Boot Options in Windws 7. Turn the computer on and immediately start clicking the F8 key. Keep clicking until the Advanced Boot Options screen appears. From here you have an option to repair your computer, access safe mode, etc.

Hello, ive had this sony vaio fw560f since January and all of a sudden, when i turn it on, it goes past the vaio screen and stays at a black screen. Overnight, i try again, and it now gives me a "A disk read error occurred" i cant access safe mode or anything aside from bios settings, i cant insert a cd since the cd drive doesnt work (unrelated issue, i believe) and the only option is a usb bootable stick. I put ubuntu on a stick to try and remedy the disk, but it says i cant mount it, must run chkdsk in windows. but i cant get into windows. So if anybody has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated, if i just need to run chkdsk, is there a way i can do it with a usb stick? or anything else?

Thank you very much

My Vaio SVT1311W1ES is unable to start and says 'A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart' . The SSD works fine if removed and accessed on another machine and my data is backed up. Tried resetting the BIOS to defaults, but I get same message whether I hit F8 (select boot option) or F10 (starts up system recovery) or 'Assist' button. The SSD is recognised in the BIOS. Tried booting from a USB with windows 7 - clicked on 'Repair your computer' but there's no operating system to select in 'System Recovery Options'. The problem started after the laptop was dropped. No visible signs of damage to the motherboard, connectors or components that I can see. The SSD is held in place firmly to the connector on the motherboard with 3 screws. The RAM (4GB) is mounted directly on the motherboard and checks out OK with Memtest86. Any ideas gratefully received!

I am trying to do a complete system recovery on my Vaio laptop PCG-GRT ZG My system was so screwed up I had to do a wipe of the drive not a reformat but a true wipe probably not neccesary but I wanted to start with a perfectly clean drive When I was unable to get the recovery disks to work I installed a copy of Win Pro upgraded to SP so I could at least connect to the internet and try to SP4 Win2000 in drive Vaio combo laptop CD/DVD on read DVD built-in won't find Win2000 SP4 won't read DVD in built-in CD/DVD combo drive on Vaio laptop a solution to the problem When I first received my laptop I burned the recovery kit as instructed - one system bootable CD and dvds When they didn t work I ordered the recovery kit from Sony and it arrived with only dvds no bootable CD The laptop will boot from the bootable CD and tell me to quot insert recovery disk Win2000 SP4 won't read DVD in built-in CD/DVD combo drive on Vaio laptop quot which is a dvd and then it pops the dvd out and askes me to insert disk again This is what happens whether I Win2000 SP4 won't read DVD in built-in CD/DVD combo drive on Vaio laptop use the recovery kit I made or the one from Sony I have tried booting from the first DVD and that doesn t work either - it skips it and boots in Win as usual The BIOS is set to boot from the optical drive before the hard drive Even though I have a combo CD DVD drive when I insert a dvd any dvd the drive doesn t recognize it I can t even browse it When I click on the e drive my cd dvd drive it asks me to insert a disk even when a dvd is in there The drive was working perfectly the day before reading and writing CD s and DVD s I used a program called quot bbie quot to pull the boot sectors off of the bootable system recovery CD and browsed through it but I do not see any DVD drivers however if they aren t obviously named then I could easily have missed them I believe I am not able to complete this recovery process because the system CD doesn t include a way to read dvd s - but this is just a theory My plan is to reburn the system bootable CD but with the addition of the needed dvd drivers To sum up First I d like to know if my version of BIOS supports booting from an internal dvd but I don t know how to check that Second I d like to get my system fixed to be able to read dvd s and by doing this I will hopefully find the driver I need to include on a system bootable cd If I can get that bootable cd to include dvd support I can continue my total system recovery from dvd s Third my basic problem in a nutshell is that cd s read fine but dvd s aren t recognized Hope all that made sense I am desperate for help and appreciate any suggestions nbsp

I am receiving these two error messages when I start up my computer, saying that "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." (I have NOT been notified by Windows.)

Are these two programs important? What are they for/What do they do?

More importantly, what needs to be done to correct the problems? Is there an email address/help desk where Sony can be contacted about this?

I am a novice, so please keep any responses "user friendly".

A:VAIO's Vista disc on non-vaio pc?

Not legally, you can only install on one PC at a time. If you were to install it on another you'd be breaking the law and it would likely knock out both copies when you tried to activate it.

My son has a Sony VAIO laptop running Windows XP SP3 which originally had Windows/NT on it. There are several issues with this machine including how it slows down to a crawl and kills Firefox so that it must be rebooted. I want to know this: there are several folders in the C:\WINDOWS directory as follows:

C:\WINDOWS\$NTUninstallKB817778 and C:\WINDOWS\$NTUninstallKB820291....159 of them with different KB###### subdirectories with files in them hogging up space on the C:\ drive. There are also folders named C:\WINDOWS\$MS13Uninstallkb893803V2 (1 folder)
and C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstallIDNMitigationAPIs (1 folder)
and C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstallNLSDownlevelMapping (1 folder) with files hogging up space on the C:\ drive. Shouldn't these Windows/NTfolders have been eliminated when the Windows XP install completed. Is it okay for me to delete them now or should I backup my data and then perform a fresh install of Windows XP or Windows 7? Help!!!!! Thanks.

Hi and welcome.

Try Safe mode with command prompt.
Log on as administrator.

This should launch System Restore.
Choose a date prior to the problem.
If no luck
Click the Start button > Run > Type

Click on the Start up tab.
Untick all entries Except your Anti-virus program.

Apply > Ok > Reboot your Pc.

The System Configuration Utility box appear on retstart - saying changes have been made.
Tick the box on the lower left and then OK.

Looking for help with a Sony Vaio (SVT series).  Has been running fine since purchase in 2013.  Daughter turned it on and got an error "0xc0000185", saying that computer needs repairs and the tools can be found on recovery disks.  Don't have recovery disks.  Following other posts, I tried resetting the BIOS, get same message.  Tried ASSIST Button, then selected 'repair'; computer just freezes back up.  From all I read, seems there should be subsequent screens after the initial assist screen, but I can't seem to get there.
Don't care about retrieving files - nothing important stored on this machine.  Just want to get it runing again.  Any ideas?  Sony help agent said they can fix but charge $99 since out of warranty.  Thanks!

A:VAIO PC Freezing in Windows 7

When you say it is inaccessible, is when you try to do anything on the computer or just when you try to access files?

If the computer is unresponsive and your hard drive activity light is solid, that indicates to me that your computer is paging a lot of data. Something you can do is open up your task manager and watch how much physical memory is being utilized. Also take a look at how many processes you have running (click on the button that says "Show all processes") and which ones are using the most memory. Let us know what you find.

A:I got a SONY VAIO Windows 7 and I need help.

Hi Wii_zil,

And welcome to the wonderful world of Windows 7! ;)

All programs listed under "Programs and features" are OK to uninstall, as they are not a part of the Windows operating system. Just leave any Antivirus/Firewalls be, as they're there for a reason.

But all the programs you listed above, are definately OK to remove.

As for desktop gadgets and such, it's all about personal preference. Don't be afraid to play around with the settings, check out the different themes and such. Just right-click the Desktop and choose Personalize, as you will find most of the settings there.

Otherwise, let us know what specifically you want to configure.
Generally though, a new installed system should be all fine and dandy.

The only thing I remove when I buy a new preinstalled laptop, is all the trial applications, for instance the ones you've listed in your post. Other than that, you should be just fine.

I successfully installed the 32 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate on a Sony Vaio PCV-W30, my only problem is that the amount of screen space the computer is using is very small, and leads me to believe that i need to find the right video drivers for it. This Computer has an SIS 651 graphics card, an Intel Pentium 4 Processor, and it's running 512mb Ram. Does anyone have a solution??

If needed i can take a picture to show just what i'm talking about.

Hi, I have a Sony vaio vpcee2e1e

It's a couple of years old, I turned it on the other day and it says upon loading "setup is preparing your computer for first use" it then doesn't ask me to log in it just goes straight to welcome. When it loads a black screen appears with an error message which reads "windows could not complete the installation to install windows to this computer please restart the installation" it then just restarts and does the exact same thing again.

Thanks for reading any advice will be appreciated.

Hello Everyone,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-Z590 that has 2 x 64 GB SSD hard disks that are arranged in a RAID 0 config. When installing Windows 7, the files are copied and the computer reboots, but when it reaches 85% on the Completing Installation screen, the laptop will power off. I have checked to make sure that the power adapter is plugged into a working power source, checked the battery, and even opened up the laptop to make sure that the cooling fan is working, but it still shuts off at that point. I have also disabled the RAID and tried running the Windows 7 install off of a USB drive, but it still shuts down at the same point. Has anyone run into this problem with this model Sony, and if so, how did you resolve it? Thanks!

A:Windows 7 Install on a Sony Vaio

If you have not done the following you should, update drivers and check for BIOS updates, if you are doing a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade shut down any virus and malware protection then retry running the installation, if this is a clean installation skip the part about AV/Malware.

I have tried resetting BIOS to default values but did not help. I also don't have windows 7 disks.

This is a no-no.

What you need to do is a clean install. Back-up your data externally and boot from your windows 7 CD. Select Custom Install, format the drive and install.

Hopefully Win 7 will install drivers for your hardware and we can help you from there on even more.

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Go to BIOS and set your CD/DVD to boot first.

Or you can try F2 when you restart and the first screen comes up, it should list the F-key to use on that screen somewhere for the boot menu, Sony should be F2.

I have a sony vaio sve14a35cxh that I'm trying to install back to windows 8 as it was originally pre-installed with.

now when it asks where I want to install windows, theres a message saying

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

There is no enable/disable disk controller in my BIOS menu at all. I tried to convert the entire drive to GPT and that didn't work.

I have no IDEA what I'm doing. Do I convert my entire drive to MBR or GPT and after installing the OS, do I use UEFI instead of LEGACY?

I am installing windows 8 on a USB drive.

If the problem assists go to System\Administration\Disk Utility (Availble in windows 7 only) then go to the buttom and click "edit partition" then click "BOOTABLE" and it should be fixed.

Hi all,

I wanted to know if my laptop ( Vaio - FZ 260E) supports 64 bit windows 7 or not?
And if yes is it necessary to upgrade to windows 64 bit? Because I've bought 4GB Ram memory and it is said that my windows version only uses 3GB of it.

my laptop config is:
CPU: Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T7250
Mainboard: Intel PM965
Currently Ram: 2 1GB DDR2 Rams and I want to upgrade to 2 2GB rams. (my mainboard has 2 slots)

P.S. I run Windows 7 upgrade Advisor tool and it seems there is no problem with upgrading to windows 7 64 bit and all of my drivers are recognized by it. I wonder is it really possible to have a 64 bit OS in 32 bit CPU?

A:Vaio - FZ 260E compatible with windows 7 64-bit

To find out type Resource Monitor in Start Search box. Choose the Memory tab, see a chart of how your RAM is apportioned. Some will be reserved for hardware like video.

For 4gb I would stick with 32 bit, but it is a dividing line so you can certainly try 64 bit if you want to check its performance and how RAM is utilitized.

You can even shrink your C partition in Disk Mgmt to try a test install of 64 bit in a Dual Boot. Be sure to boot the 64 bit installer to Clean Install Windows 7. If you decide to keep 64 bit, we can help you remove 32 bit later.

Hey Johnny and welcome

Did you do a clean install or upgrade?

You cant use a vista recovery (or backup) to install apps in win 7. If you did an upgrade they should already be there.

Do you have a windows.old folder on you C: drive?
If so you can use the easy transfer wizard to import your settings, etc

What do you mean saying "After my computer recovered from a virus"? Did you work with a Malware Response Team member to remove all the malware from your infected PC? I have seen IE messed with like this a year or so ago and it was malware related. The malware set all pages to white. Being on a white background the pages disappeared. Malwarebytes is one of many tools used to check for and remove malware. One tool does not find and fix all infections. If you haven't already done so, my suggestion is to move this to the Am I infected, What Do I Do forum and let them have a go at it. You might still have something...

Hello People.

After some searches and test's with the windows 7 beta & RC on my vgn-fe890n, i finally installed all the features on it (including the FN functions and S1,S2).

Here are the step's I've taken (obviously after you installed the windows7):

1.Install NVidia driver (ver 195.39) from here.
2.Install Sony Shared Libraries from here.
3.Install Sony Utilities DLL from here.
4.Uninstall Vaio LAN Settings & another one similar with this (can't remember perfectly).
5.Install Firmware Extension Parser from here.
6.Install Memory Card / Touchpad / Camera with drivers from here.

And that's all. It's working perfect for me.

PS: before you install a driver, go to Properties and under COMPATIBILITY hit Vista SP2 and under PRIVILEGE activate As an Administrator
PS2: RESTART after each update!!!

I have 32 bit and 64bit can anybody suggest me which ll be better to load.

guys i need ur help and advice.

A:Windows 7 on my sony vaio without CD DRIVE!!

Without your system specs, its hard to say which is best, but the fact that it comes with the starter edition tells me that this is a bare bones system. Without a cd/dvd drive, you are pretty much stuck with a flash drive installation... Do you have the ISO for Windows 7 ???

A:Windows XP on Sony VAIO laptop won't run..

i personnaly run a sony vaio desktop pc and i think this might help

when you bought the computer did u make a recovery cd cause all vaio's have that option if you did i reccomend you do a system restore by pressing f2 or 12 i think it will recover your computer to an earlier date and then you insert the recovery disk and then you are all done--
-it sends you back to the day that you made the system disk

I have a Sony vaio pcg-k37, and windows will not boot. As soon as I turn the computer on it goes straight to a black screen and it says NTLDR is missing, ctrl alt del to restart. and when I do it goes right back to that black screen. Does anyone have any ideas, besides taking it to a repair shop?

UPDATE: I don't have any cds for this laptop.

A:Need help with booting Up windows on my SONY VAIO

I'm wondering about your statement 'goes straight to a black screen'. No POST? Is it possible that it no longer recognizes your hard drive? (Possibly drive has failed, possibly cables came loose, possibly BIOS got changed)

If not, try booting from your Windows CD & copy NTLDR back to the hard drive (probably root of C: drive).

I installed windows 7 on my sony VGN-SZ770N laptop; the motion eye webcam stopped working. I tried to download the dirvers for the camera from the SONY website, but it says it is for VISTA only. And when I ran the EXE file in vista compatibility mode, it still did not fix the problem. The system does not recognize my built-in webcam, nor does skype. Any help will be much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to TSf

Can you tell us the model of sony vaio laptop?

That way we can see what drivers are there and how we can access the camera of yours. So far, if the drivers are installed, then you should be able to access it via skype or any other program that uses a webcam.

Let us know the model for us to help you further.

Hello Giansky26 and welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you tried copying just one file at a time? Does that work? Are you trying to copy to Windows Media Player or something else? Is the external HDD being recognized? Perhaps if you show a screenshot of your expanded Disk Management window it will give a clue about how the Vaio sees the external HDD.

My Windows 8.1 crashes randomly (almost everyday), without BSOD or Black Sreen, and restarts as normal. There are no minidump files created.
Any help is welcome.

A:Windows 8.1 random BSOD on my Vaio fit 13

Only 44 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 60 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

I found network and video crashes from March and April in the WER section of MSINFO32
Nothing from May though.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).

Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Update the router's firmware or maybe just try reseting it first if you haven't yet.

Did you wipe out the recovery partition if any?
Boot from a Windows XP CD. Borrow one if you have to. Just have your 25 digit product key handy. Choose to reformat the drive then install Windows.
You can download the driver installation files from Sony's site using another computer.

1) You could try the full install file.

2) Not sure there. Perhaps download from a different mirror? Check file size too (right-click, properties)

3) not sure about antivirus, but i like clamwin. people on here say avast. for antispyware, any of these should work: spybot search and destroy, ad-aware, and windows defender for xp.

A:To Sony VAIO Users - Do Not Install Windows 10 Yet!

Sony announced this a couple of weeks ago to Sony users. I was grateful as I had considered upgrading my VAIO laptop first and this desktop later.

If anyone has upgraded their are patches I understand to counter the mistake made in upgrading. How do I know? Someone whom I advised not to upgrade did so. But a patch from the Sony web site sorted out his issues.

W7 Home should be compatible soon but other op. systems have a much longer wait it seems.
