BSOD on Dell XPS 8000

Q: BSOD on Dell XPS 8000

Hello everyone I just purchased a new Dell XPS I have been experiencing BSOD very frequently usually couple times a day I called their customer support however they only ask me to run the diagnostic program which scans the hardware and concludes everything is fine He also remote debugged my mini dumps and concludes it is a driver problem However updating to the newest driver does not solve the problem I used sfc scannow to scan the system there is no integrity violation So is my problem caused by hardware or software I have included the specs and two mini dumps I have Specs - Preferred Solution: BSOD on Dell XPS 8000

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The USB ports on my dell studio xps 8000 keep dying. the light on the mouse stops working, unplug it and plugging it back in usually fixes it. there's also the sound its makes when you unplug from usb then plug in. sometimes I only get the sound which freezes the cursor then it working again. other time mouse is completely dead (no light) passes dell full tests says nothing wrong

You have to purchase compatible RAM. Go to, and allow it to scan your system to determine what options are available.

You can install Windows XP. I doubt it would run Vista well.

i have a friend who has a Dell Inspiron 8000. I can't figure out where to put a wireless card. I do not see any slots for it. Does anyone know if a wireless card can be used with this model? I don't think it had built in wireless. Seemed to old for that.

Thanks for your help

A:Dell Inspiron 8000 Can it be wireless?

According to the specs of that Inspiron, it has two PC card slots on the side of the case....somewhere usually on the right side toward the back of the computer. And no, it's not wireless built in.

It could use a PCMCIA wireless card.

Thank goodness you people are around!!

I'd like to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 8000.
Currently has 256mb RAM - I know it can only go up to 512mb RAM.
Which brand of Memory is best??

Alos, I'd like to upgrade the hard drive also.
Currently has 10GB.
Does anyone know the maximum GB's for this computer hard drive?
Which brand of hrad drive should I buy?

If I get max RAm (512mb) and max hard drive (GB's) would it be
possible to then install Windows XP on to this computer?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Someone I know just recently gave me an Inspiron 8000 but he says the hard drive is messed up. I try to turn it on and it has the Dell loading screen, then the screen goes black, but then it just going back to the loading screen. It does that process over and over. The hard drive does make a suspicious clicking sound every time the screen goes black. The original OS was Windows ME but I'm not sure what it is now. Should I risk $60 (on newegg) and buy a new hard drive? What should I do?

A:Dell Inspiron 8000 problems

if it si merely the hard drive that is bad. ( and it definitely sounds like the HD is toast) you should get a boot up message about no boot device found etc.

try accessing the bios during boot up, if you can then replacing the hard drive should give you are workable laptop. if he didnt give you the dell xp disk your goiing to need a copy of windows.

Hey Nelly,

i'm on my way out for today, but i can tell you this, check out for the inspiron 8000 specifications maybe on the manual if you have it or else, in the internet. I guess 8000s use 3com network cards(not completely sure), so what you need for get that card running is the driver software. If it is a common 3com you can find it here or else, if it is not a 3com card check out the list at for the right card brand you have.

Seems like a BSoD happened, but I didn't see any blue screen.
Every Dell's diagnostics utility say everything is working alright.
After a Windows clean install, it seemed to stop happening for some days.

I did a google search on this error, and it seems related to the GPU, I did better testing on it.
I tried different nvidia drivers (266.58 and 263.11), but nothing resolved.
Sometimes it happens when I'm booting up my PC, but it mostly happens while I'm actively using it.
GPU is not overclocked and the freeze happens even when its temperature is really low. It didn't happen during the furmark benchmark.

The following details are not confirmed, since I'm currently testing them:
It doesn't seem to happen while I use the PC without video driver, or when I link the PC to the screen using a VGA cable.
It only seems to happen when I link my monitor (Samsung SyncMaster T220HD) with an HDMI cable.

The system is still in warranty, so I if I bring it back to the shop I will have it repaired for free, but I'd like to try solving the problem without having to wait several weeks...

Thanks in advance for any input!

You have 5 different Bug Check codes and that is usually hardware. Since 2-3 of them are video related I share your suspicion that is it video driver, or card.

I would re-install the driver this way

When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

I would also run a system file check to verify and repair system files. Neither should void your warranty.

If these both come back clean there are a few other things we can try

This is first post, so please excuse any display of ignorance from me.

I know that the hard drive is bad. It will not let me boot up to try and recover data. Last resort is to send to a data recovery specialist.

If the drive is cool, it will try to boot, but it is looking for a corrupted file, "ntoskrnl.exe" in the \System32 dir (Win 2000 Pro). Is there a way I can transfer this file onto the drive?

I have tried to Repair with the Dell reinstall CD, it does not work. It hangs up during the checking C:\ drive portion. I tried it under the Console Recovery and same thing. Also tried the "fixboot"; it did not do anything for me.

Any Suggestions?

Your help is appreciated.

View Solution.

A:what is the maximum ram for the zd 8000

zd8000 is more like 2009 or so. Here is the Service Manual: Manual The series started out as a Socket 775 Pentium 4 machine but I believe by the end of the run, with a BIOS update you could actually use Core2 Duo processors in it and it could take up to 4 gigs of RAM and run 64 bit Windows. The model numbers ran up into the zd8400 range, if I recall. They are enormous machines which are essentially desktop computers in a laptop case but lots of room in there so easy to disassemble and work on.  There should be a tag on the bottom with the full model number. The Manual does not really describe the later versions very well. It is a pretty rare beast, you do not see very many of them.

My HP Workstation 8000 will not boot. I was downloading a torrent, and then opened the .avi file, and it told me to go to to decrypt the file. I went to the site, didn't download anything, and the computer just froze. (could this be multiple trojans.avi?) I had no option but to turn it off. Now it will not boot, nothing on the monitor, though fans and drives are running. I would have made the HD a slave in another computer to save the data, but no one else seems to have internal SCSI. What can I do? I really don't care about the data anymore I just need the computer to work.

The Tecra 8000 is an oldie and therefore it needs RAM modules which are not more used in most notebook models.
As far as I know you need the 144-Pin PC100 SODIMM module.

I read this forum and searched Google, but nothing helps.

I think the HDD on Tecra 8000 ( Pentium II , 266 Mhz ) is "dead".
I tried to replace it with one from another laptop to see if that would work.

The laptop doesn't recognize it, although I put everything back as the original.
Is there a special way or do I have to change something in the Bios?

A:Tecra 8000 does not recognize new HDD

The BIOS settings don?t need to be changed?

As long as you use the compatible HDD, the BIOS should recognize the HDD automatically without any big troubles?
What HDD did you use? What size, interface, etc?

The Tecra 8000 is a oldie? and I think you could use only the 4GB; 6GB; 9GB; 10GB; 14GB IDE HDDs.

Bigger HDDs would be not recognized by BIOS.

If you can find the jumper on the mobo to reset the bios - try that.

Or else remove the cmos battery for 20 or so minutes & replace.

A:Inspiron 8000 display dim

Hi mmann

It could be that the cable connecting the LCD to the laptop has gone bad and is opening up in certain positions. You could also try reseating the connector between the system board and the display. It could be making a bad contact. The same with the other connectors in the LCD display itself.

Sorry if this is an obvious question - but did you remove the flash/removeable drive and attempt to reboot? Have you tried bringing your PC up in Safe Mode (Press/Hold F8 BEFORE Windows starts to boot and pick "Safe Mode" from the menu).

With the flash drive(s) removed, boot, press/hold F8 and try "Last known good configuration".

Let me know.

I would also try elevating the back of the Notebook with something to see if it can better breathe and avoid this.

I screwed up some things in the registry and lost my CD drive.
Prior to that, it was running fine, with win 98.

A tech worked on it and installed Win 98 SE.
Then, it started running very slowly.
He got rid of my IR and Parallel port, to free up some IRQ's, installed my Xircom Ethernet card and got the CD working again. I'm not sure which CD controller it should need but this one has the EIDE controller configured now.

I'm looking for a source for Toshiba Tecra 8000 software and manual that came with the Tecra.
I'm also seeking ideas to speed it up.

I'd just like to have the same speed I had to begin with.

A:Toshiba Tecra 8000 PII 266 Problems

tecra PII 8000

There is a guy on ebay that sells a recovery disk for the tecra 8000 PII 266.
My neighbor gave me the very same model and I ,needed to dump the system my regular kill disk would not work on it for some reason. Anyway go to ebay type in toshiba tecra 8000. The guy I got the disk from is called Mr. Canada. It worked for me the only thing is that it loads windows 95. I did put XP on mine after the drivers were in place. It does have all the factory drivers. Hope this helped.

I want to install an SSD as well as my original HD to keep my OS. I think the empty bay is below the DVD RW as there is a conector labelled p5 or p6 with different colour wires. I want to get a 120 or 250 GB 2.5. I belive my hd  and connections are SATA 2 Am I right in thinking that a SATA 3 SSD will be compatable and the correct place to instal it is under the dvd? Also what other leads will I need? The  one thats there is on the one from the HD to the DVD, is this the power cable?

A:Installing SSD 8000 elite compaq

I made the installation of a 120gb and for anyone that's interested it wasn't the wildest experience or even come close to what I was expecting. First I had to reinstal the os onto the ssd. Then I lost all my apps. Office, u torrent, abode, autoCAD, iTunes everything was inaccessible from my old hd when connected to the 3rd socket. I had to change the speed in bios from 1.5 gbs to the max only 3 gbs. Then I has to change the settings so everything I downloaded or saved would go on my hd which is drive D now. I also seem to get a lot more of 'Firefox not respondimg' and other screen freezes or not responding. I don't know if this is a ssd the net connection but it seems to happen more than it did before. Has anyone else had this or care to share their experience with SSDS?

Anyone here know if/where Toshiba sell harddrives for this aging notebook (PIII/500 from 1999), or if not, what maximum size drive can it take, and if it needs some converter.

It currently has a 6GB disk in it. Its not my laptop, BTW, its a friends with an aversion to spending money

A:Toshiba Tekra 8000 harddrives

Toshibas Detail Specs Guide shows the Tecra 8000 hard drive interface as ATA-4, with the option to purchase up to a 14Gb harddrive stock. So I think its a fairly safe bet your friend can upgrade to any ATA-4 hard drive. has ATA-4 drives up to 60GB in size, for a hefty premium of course.

Press and hold the Wireless button for three seconds.

If that doesn't work, you may have to reprogram it.

It's running so slow, that I can't use it effectively.
It is a 266 Mhz, with 192 Mb ram.
Bios is 9.30
It was upgraded to Win 98 SE, after I boobooed the registry and the bios was flashed to 9.30.
Since I got it back, it is so slow that I really can't use it.
It takes about 10 minutes to boot up.
I have the factory configuration CD that installs Win 95 and all of the Toshiba drivers and defaults.

What do I need to do, before trying to run the configuration CD?

A:Toshiba Tecra 8000-Too Slow

I think it's time for you to get yourself a new PC, my brother uses a PII 350 with 64mb RAM for his work and I often hear him yelling through his wall that it's too slow or has buggered up/crashed for some reason. Look on Ebay for a good cheap one, it sounds like you use yours for work. ANything with 256mb RAM and a processor of at least 1ghz (for value for money) will be more than capable. It could be that loads of crap has been left behind by WIn95 in the install of 98. Did you format the hard drive before you installed it?

What I want to do is to create an image of the current OS partition with the Ghost 2003 DOS utility loaded onto a CD instead of a floppy.

I have borrowed an old Tecra 8000 from my gal friend. It has Win2k Pro installed.
After d/l'ing a pdf of the manual, It seems that it originally came with Win98 installed.
The manual says to use the "Companion Diskette" to enter DOS.
The only diskette d/l I can find is for Win 98/Win98se.

So, my questions:
1. Will the Win98 diskette work with Win2k?
2. Preferably, how can I open a CD with DOS before the OS starts up?
I can get into startup. But, that doesn't seem to allow me to access the CD Rom drive.

Hopefully it is an easy process that I'm just too blind to see.

A:Tecra 8000 with Win2k - How to start up in DOS?

I don't know that ghost tool exactly, but first of all that disk should work with Win2k too. To access that CD, DOS cd-driver must be on that disk and normally they are, if it is an official ghost tool disk.
Try this and if this won't help, you may make your CD bootable. Check google how to do so. There are several instructions for this procedure.

Hello, I have a Tecra 8000 laptop 400Mhz, 128MB Ram, Win 2k pro. I was given a 128 MB RAM chip and I installed it and I had no boot up. I took out the chip and restarted the computer and I still don't have boot up also no display. I pushed the reset button and yes, you guessed it, no boot up. Is there any other tricks I can try?

A:Tecra 8000 No Boot after Ram upgrade

Hi there -

By "no boot up", do you mean it hangs, or do you not even have power? If you have power, have you double checked your original RAM to make sure it is seated properly?

Hope that helps.

Hello, what kind of device do I need in order to connect an old Tecra 8000 hard drive to a notebook from an other manufacture?

I just want to transfer some data but the ac connector on the Tecra no longer works.

A:Tecra 8000 - How to connect HDD to an other notebook?

You can use an external HDD case with USB port for this.
The external HDD case should be for 2.5? HDD?s and with IDE interface. That?s all.

Contact your local computer dealer. I?m sure they will have such cases.

Hi all,

I have recently been asked to look at a friends' Tecra 8000 (PII 233) and to give it a bit of an update.....Not sure why as the most I have ever done is to add a few small components to my home PC!!

My question is is it possible for a broadband connection to be established - I have looked all over the notebook, but cannot find anything that would suggest that it can be done.
Also what other upgrades should (can) we look at.

Sorry for the noobness, but any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Tecra 8000 and broadband connection

Wow? this is really an oldie?
By broadband do you mean the LAN port?

As far as I know the Tecra 8000 was not equipped with LAN port.
It?s really unbelievable but this is a fact?

However, if you would like to use LAN then I recommend buying a PCMCIA LAN card (Cardbus 32-Bit) which would allows you to connect the Tecra 8000 to LAN.

What can I do?
Hope someone maybe had the same problem

A:How to start recovery CD on Tecra 8000?

This with C at start up should work. I just hope you use right CD.
Do you have CD1 and CD2? Be sure you use CD1 at first.

You can enter BIOS and set optical disc drive as first bootable device.

I purchased on of these as reconditioned and it works fine.Recently I noticed that there is no CPU fan, or even a bracket to hold a cpu fan.I have look at others of this type online, and noticed that same thing.Doesn't this CPU need a cooler?

View Solution.

A:HP Compaq 8000 Elite PC cpu cooling

Hi: If you have the SFF model, the processor is cooled by the chassis fan. The air from the fan flows through the heat sink and provides adequate cooling for the processor. I can't remember if the fan blows the air into the heat sink or draws it away (exhausts it) from the heat sink. Just hold your hand near the fan outlet to feel which way the air is blowing. There should be a plastic shroud (fan baffle) over the fan and heat sink. You can see the parts list below... The 8000 Elite CMT has a separate processor fan atop the heat sink.

I have a Hewlett Packard computer and it came with a HP CD-Writer+ 8000 model CD-RW drive. It USED to work perfectly, now apparently it isn't spinning fast enough to keep up with the data being sent. I get an error saying something like "Data transfer too fast" or something and it closes, ruining the CD and leaving me frustrated. PLEASE help me out here. Music is my life.

A:HP CD-Writer+ 8000 not functioning properly

The writer has to spin at a designated speed or the CD will be screwed up. You would get a different message if the recorder wasnít spinning fast enough.

You arenít giving much in the way of details of how you are recording or what. Or with what software.

Ctrl+Alt+Del and remove everything except Explore, Systray and the burning software.

If your major use for the burner is music, go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall DirectCD. If you have the original version that came with the burner it can cause problems.

If you donít already have it, get the latest version of the freeware version of AdAware and run it. Spyware can take enough CPU cycles to cause burning problems:

Also run an online virus check if you donít have up to date anti-virus software: There are several available, this is one:

Hi: I put a Sandisk 240 GB SSD in my 8000 Elite CMT and it works just fine. Didn't want to spend the extra $$$ for a 480 GB one. I see no reason why you couldn't install a 500 GB SSD. Bear in mind that it will only run at the SATA II (3.0 GB/S) speed. The first PC in that class that can run a SATA III HDD or SSD at the SATA III (6.0 GB/S speed) is the 8200 Elite model series. Also you should be able to install up to a 2 TB mechanical hard drive in the machine.

so you have some sound and it cuts in and out ? or now you have no sound ? please describe issue again ?
check Device Manager for yellow or red flags in the sound and audio section.
when you re-install drivers you should first uninstall old drivers.
have you installed software recently that uses audio (maybe something from Pandora). try uninstalling.
try external speakers to see if problem is with internal speakers.
