Viewing Windows 7 explorer history

Q: Viewing Windows 7 explorer history

Hi. Someone restored my ipod and deleted all the info on it. Is it possible to view Windows Explorer history to see when the itunes program was accessed similar to viewing history in a browser. If I can view the history I may be able to tell who was using the computer at the time by comparing it to the browser history where i can see who loged in to their email adresses, etc.
Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

And what are you going to do if you find out who had this mishap ? I know 'revenge is a dish best eaten cold' but also 'Vengeance is Mine, sayeth The Lord'
I don't think Explorer has such a history, it's purely for recent searches. I think you would be better just biting the bullet and re-installing your music, videos etc. to your iPod. Probably quicker as well !

Does anyone know how to view the internet explorer history folder on another computer (both XP and 98SE) across a LAN, I have access to the computer but when I browse there it shows the history on My Computer (XP) not the ones I am wanting to look at.

Can anyone help me on this one.

A:Viewing Internet Explorer History across a LAN

I would imagine that you would have to change the permissions on the host computer to make the History folder a shared folder.

A:Does anybody know any safe Firefox history viewing software for XP?

I am not sure what you are after. You can view your history inside of Firefox. If you cleared history or have the option checked to clear history on exit then no viewer will find your history.
Here is a utility to view Firefox history that works on XP and Vista and provides more info then Firefox's own History viewer.

I have a funny feeling that a supervisor has somehow silently gained remote access to my computer and was wondering how I might check against this notion. I notice that when I do a netstat, I get a ton of messages (with IP address preceding the that I think are tied to GoToMyPC or GoTo Meeting. I'll do it again shortly and all the connections will be gone. His office behavior has also made me wonder. Is there a log somewhere I might check or any utilities that can be used to reveal logging activity by user, service, etc.? I know, it's a bit paranoid but I just wonder.

A:checking history of remote viewing of my workstation

Just curious as to why you are suspicious. If it a place of employment and the appropriate authoritive figure has appointed your supervisor the responsibility of monitoring you while at work I sincerely doubt it is a good idea for you to go nosing around. You may find your self without a job.

I will say that there are certain processes running when a remote view is in progress BUT keep in mind that GTMPC is always actively in TCP with its host. If not (assuming you have a dynamic ip not a static) GTMPC would not be able to locate your machine over the www

Do a good job and you won't have to worry about someone watching over you.

How do i look at the actual images when i choose thumbnails in windows.

I used to be able to see the pictures when i chose the thumbnail options, but all i see now is the type of icon they are. for ex. the gif or jpeg icon.

I don't know if i did something or not.

I don't care how many times I set my Windows Explorer viewing settings to Name, Ascending I have files that move around in the window. I'm getting real sick of having to either use F5 or back out of the folder and come back in. Just because I open a file doesn't mean it should move to the end of the list. That's what is happening though. Every single one of these files was created exactly the same way but not all of them do it. And not all of the files moving are the same ones every time. It's only occasion files that move and not always the same files, it seems to be random.

I just know this is getting to be extremely irritating. So if anyone can tell me how to lock in my viewing preferences and keep them that way I would greatly appreciate it.

When I choose Thumbnails view in Windows Explorer I get a set of thumbnails as expected.

But when I click on a thumbnail the image opens in Internet Explorer. I'm sure it used to open in an image viewer that let me run a sort of slideshow.

How can I get things back the way they were? Hope you can help.

I remember reading sometime ago it was possible to view a clickable list of all my Windows 7 files through Internet Explorer.

Just wondered how to do it and if it was a good idea?

A lot of my files are also on 2 connected External Drives F Drive and G Drive.

A:Viewing windows files in Internet explorer?

I suspect you mean view all files on a computer using Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer.

Right click Computer and select Open. Expand the arrow in front of C.
Expand the arrow in front of Users.
If you click on your name (don't let the lock on your name scare you), you will see folders with your files in the right hand pane. Click on any of them to see what they contain.

For an external hard drive: be sure the drive is attached.
Click on computer and you should see the drives. Click on either drive to see the contents.

OK, so i put a whole load of pictures taken on the same night with different cameras into a folder, but the different cameras give the pictures different names and as such theyre all sorted in a silly order, just by name.
I know that by right-clicking and selecting 'arrange icons by> picture taken on' would sort out the problem...but for some reason when i right-click its not one of the options! Anyone know how to get that option back? The folder is customised as a photos folder...and only contains jpeg images, so i don't understand why i cant choose to arrange them by picture taken on, when i can do it in other similar folders!

Your iTunes account should hold all of the information that was on the iPod as long as you synced the device with it.

All you need to do is resync your iPod and iTunes should send your data and apps back.

I know that several people have asked how to delete the history from the Explorer Address Bar in Windows 7.

I have been having trouble in saving the history. No matter which folder / directory path I've used in the path, it never shows up. Originally, this was working fine.

The only thing that I did since my install was to turn off some of the windows features and services. I've tried to turn on the same but it hasn't helped.

Double check to make sure that you have Recent Items turned on.

If you do, then that means that you may have cleared the Jump lists or recent items history. If so, it should repopulate after a bit as you open items.

Cannot keep "thumbnails" as default viewing option throughout Windows Explorer programs & functions

All my folders are set to thumbnail in windows explorer, but when I go to send a picture on msn or open in another application the pictures are in list view.

Hi everyone. I have a laptop running XP that I got a year ago right before Vista came out. I used to have a really irritating problem, then it completely went away, and now it has resurfaced and was wondering if anyone on a tech forum might be able to help me out.

Whenever I open a folder than has video files (I'm not sure if it's just avi or others, but to be safe let's just say all video files), explorer closes for a second, and then reopens, with everything looking fine except for the folder which had the video files in it, which is now closed. It makes it pretty difficult to watch through my videos, let alone trying to browse around to see what I have. Does anyone know what's going on or a way to get rid of this? That would make things wonderfully easier and I wont have to go back and forth through a bunch of folders to find my file to email or upload. Thanks.

A:Viewing recent files in Explorer

Maybe a recent files list is what you're after?

If so, Right-Click the Task Bar and choose Properties
Choose the Start Menu tab and choose Customize
In the Window that opens, drill down to Recent Items and make sure that is Checked

Hope this is what you need!

Thanks for your help and time everyone.

Can someone provide me with a step by step in modifying the registry to show flv thumbnails just as I am able to see mpeg and avi and wmv files I have some instructions but I didn't quite understand it all on how what to modify I will include such info as I have need some experienced help for a newbie Thank you But here is how you can make your videos in extensions like flv and gp to show thumbnail preview in the Windows Explorer just like the avi and wmv files The following trick needs registry tweaking so you can either backup your registry thumbnails WinXp Viewing explorer in flv or delete the key that Viewing flv thumbnails in explorer WinXp you are just going to create Open a notepad and copy and paste the Viewing flv thumbnails in explorer WinXp following code as it is REGEDIT HKEY CLASSES ROOT flv Viewing flv thumbnails in explorer WinXp ShellEx BB E C- - d - A B- C FC D C c a -cd - ccf- cb-c da d Remember you need to copy the entire code and then save the file with any name but with reg extension say abc reg If this don t work then paste Windows Registry Editor Version before REGEDIT and try again Double click this newly created file and click on yes afterwards Congratulations flv video files will show a thumbnail preview in the explorer Note Similarly you can make the other video files like gp mp mov or vob to show thumbnail preview in the explorer For that you just need to replace flv with the extension you are making Example REGEDIT HKEY CLASSES ROOT mp ShellEx BB E C- - d - A B- C FC D C c a -cd - ccf- cb-c da d This will create a new registry key that will show the preview of the video file Let me know how did you like the post This may be simple for someone who is in the know but I really need to be baby stepped through it Anyone Thanks again stephen aka complearning

I remember my first time doing something like this. I asked the same question you have since I was afraid I'd brake my computer.

Click start, click run, type notepad and click ok.

Copy and paste the following text into the new window, just like you would with Word or any other text editing program:

Make sure there are no extra spaces before REGEDIT4 or after 590}"

Save the file to your Desktop as (something).reg and double click the new file that's been created. Windows should ask you if you'd like to import it into your registry. Click yes and reboot to finish.

Sometimes, the file will open in Notepad instead of being imported. This rarely happens but it's not hard to fix. Just post here again if it does and I'll walk you through fixing it.

So, here is my problem.

Whenever viewing folders in explorer that contain TIF image files, I receive a explorer.exe error, or a DEP error, and sometimes a DrWatson32.exe debugger error.

I've diabled DEP for explorer.exe, but that only cause the error to not show up, but the screen flashes and explorer closes.

I believe this error has something to do with TIF previews in explorer... but I can't find anything on that subject, so maybe the problem is elsewhere.

I've seen some related issues, but not what's happening on my fairly new Dell W7 Precision Laptop when trying to view videos from Internet Explorer 9, 64 bit or 32 bit.

The gist of the matter is that IE9 stops running when trying to view videos from Yahoo's portal. No problem watching videos from Google's site using IE9. Any suggestions to enable viewing videos from Yahoo?

I've attached a PDF doc with screen shots of the error dialog box that posp up when a video is opened with the progression of the error messages.

The PDF also includes the green line issue that was solved by another thread's suggestion to disable a video feature on Adobe Flash Player.

So should I ask questions about Explorer 11 on this forum or an Explorer 11 forum?

However the History tab always has nothing inside even if I browse.

Hello Foobartwo,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Take a look in internet options. On the general tab click on browsing history settings and make sure you have some number of days for IE to remember last visted sites (at the bottom). Also if you have delete browsing history on exit checked click on the delete button (it won't delete anything yet) and make sure history is unchecked.

Hope this helps. Please keep us posted.

Is there anyway of being able to track history after it's been deleted?

Or, being able to avoid it being deleted?

Or, being able to have the history saved to two seperate locations, so that when it does get deleted, IE only removes it from the original location, and keeps the other one, like a "backup" type process?

You could have a backup program backup the folder that IE uses for it's history.

I am new to W7 and have noticed my IE Explorer history contains quite a few odd entries that are usually bracketed as follows { }. Within the { } are a seemingly random set of numbers and letters divided by dashes. For example {1234-AB12-YZ456789AB etc.}. Any ideas on what these are ?

A:Unusual IE8 Explorer History Entries

Do you use any kind of third-party system cleaners, and did you ever clear your IE history this way before?

I would imagine that these are history entries that Windows/IE "forgot" about, meaning they're missing from the index.dat the history no longer knows how to display them with their actual date/time and the link.

That's just an educated guess, but it's probably a harmless anomaly. Try clearing your history (properly, from the Internet Options control panel) and then observing if this happens again later on.

Dear All

I need your help! For awhile now, every so often websites appear in my history on Internet Explorer which I have not accessed, (nor for that matter any1 else on my laptop). These websites are not exactly the decent type, and I have no idea how they appear.
They are not popups, but actual websites, some of them originating from a search in Google (which again I did not do!)
Now how is this possible?
Does anyone know whether it is possible that my computer can be accessed and the broadband internet connection used to access websites which then display in my history???? Is that what is going on, or could it be some type of adware/spyware?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dear Forum,

I am having trouble with internet explorer. I have downloaded from the email that I received to a folder that looked like it was created with capital letters - I have done a bit of research and I gather that it went to a IE5 folder. When I went looking for it - I could not find it.

I have tried everything to try and find it.

In future I know to save to a library or desktop - before I have to call Microsoft - I think that the technical advisor at the Microsoft website was that technically blessed. He only could give general advice - we all know that I guess you really have to see items - just words - well you miss the details.

I just want to know if I have the correct set up like everyone else.

You are probably deleting browsing history in tools. Go to tools internet options. Do not check the box to delete.

I have gone through all the steps in the following thread, but my file search history is not clearing or updating. Search terms clear, but the old search reappears with deleted files on it.

I was wondering if there is a setting that would get rid of my typing in an address in the IE Search the Web box and then not show all of the prior sites addresses that I had visited; which appear beneath the search box?

I did go to Tools, Internet Options, Content TAB, and then Clear Forms and that did not get rid of the prior sites addresses that I had been to appearing when I typed an address in the Search the Web box.

Any input/s would be appreciated.

Hi All,

Just a quickie, When I try and delete the browsing History (with IE8 or ccleaner) it still seems to be there. I open up IE8 and click the drop down arrow in the address bar and it still shows the History, along with Favorites etc.

Anyone having the same problem or am I doing something wrong? I have Build 7022 on a 32Bit system with IE8

A:Internet Explorer 8 & delete browsing History

I've seen this happening too, but only for a few URLs...A few of them remained in the drop-down list.

The new thing in IE8 is that when you hover over a URL in the drop-down list, an X icon appears at the right side. When you click on it, the URL is permanently deleted.

Ideally I'd like to view something from an explorer page from about 3 months ago. The page is now updated so I have no way to access the data again.

Is there any way to access this page via normal or undelete methods. I have a very good undelete program but I dont know what I should be searcing for.

Any help appreciated.

A:View Explorer History older than 3 weeks?

The pages you're looking for are probably lost forever. You can get IE to store pages for a longer time and increase the capacity for Temporary Internet files, but I wouldn't recommend it for Windows ME/IE6 due to total resources available.

I have "Internet Explorer history" checked on my indexing options screen.

When I search for a URL that's IN my internet history, nothing EVER comes up. Meaning, I can't search on anything and have it come from my internet history.

For example, I'm on OKCupid. If I search on "okcupid" nothing comes up at all.

Any suggestions as to how this works?

A:indexing options/search - Internet Explorer history

I can't help with IE, because I only touch it when forced to, but Opera has it's own set of panels to find it's history within it's own GUI.

Well I hope the title pretty much explains it. I would like to clear the search history that starts to autofill on explorer and when typing things into the search field of the computer.

Thank you,

A:clearing search history in Internet Explorer and on Computer

Hi In Internet Explorer go to tools...In this window look down and see button for it...above this you can also clear all your cookies and temp files too.

Then still in the main window click on the ...content tab... and click on autocomplete clear forms and passwords. Here you can choose what autocomplete's you want to use

Hope this helps

I've had this problem for years, since first upgrading to Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7.

After 2-3 weeks, Internet Explorer starts randomly choosing to disclude sites from its history, before reaching a point where it simply stops recording history. Yes, I HAVE all the settings properly adjusted so that it does not delete history upon exit, has an entire gigabyte of disk space reserved just for history, 400 days set to keep history, and it still ends up being a bi-monthly thing of me having to delete the history.

I've gone through countless sites and forums looking for answers,

History function not working in Internet Explorer 8 - Microsoft Answers

Why has history not been working in IE 9 for the last few days? - Microsoft Answers

IE 9 is not saving my browsing history. - Microsoft Answers

NOTHING works for me, not deleting index.dat and such.

A:Internet Explorer 9 does not save History past 2-3 weeks

This could be due to settings in internet properties.

Go to control panel, Network and Internet, Internet options.

Under browsing history click settings.

First under where it says (Check for newer versions of stored web pages) check Never.

Then underneath that where it sais History it should say Days to keep pages in history 20. change this to a number such as 365 (which would keep history for a year).

Alternatively upgrade to a better browser, Firefox and Google Chrome are good options being quicker than IE 9 and managing their own History usually not deleting history what so ever.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to know if anyone can tell me how I can prevent users from deleting the browsing history or accessing it all together. Even if it required password access to deleting history, that would be fine as long as only I can have access to deletion.

Reason is because I have users who are denying they visit porn sites yet mysteriously I have porn pop ups on my pc even after I had them removed several times.

I think they are deleting History so I can't see if they visit or not.

Thanks in advance,

I don't use Internet Explorer for browsing, but today accidentally open the browsing history in IE. I was shocked to see some file appeared on the history which I accessed using Explorer .
I have enabled recent file history on Explorer but I don't want IE to see those.
How to prevent IE from seeing what I accessed on Explorer?

For some reason I cannot find out how to have internet explorer 8 keep the history. I can see the history in the drop down address bar, but not in the favorites/history bar?? and suggestions?? I think the registry may be messed up because I had to fix it from a western digital sync path..

Here is what I changed in the registry. Ignore what is current. I changed it to the default path.

A:[SOLVED] Internet Explorer 8 won't keep history?? but drop down does work.

The key needed to be changed to the correct path. (I had it wrong orginally)
The path for history is %userprofile%\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\history

restart internet explorer

Somehow the paths got messed up from a western digital's backup software. (See screenshot)

The key is found under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, Explorer, User Shell Folders

All items are checked in CCleaner which is the latest version. Ran it numerous times without success.
I always delete IE junk from "Internet Options" first, then use CCleaner to mop up. I have never used IE on my system.
Any suggestions ?
