Cannot log in to W7 laptop – unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard

Q: Cannot log in to W7 laptop – unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard

Hi folks I've had success on this forum before and I'm hoping someone with more knowledge of IT than me can Cannot and in laptop to keyboard on-screen unresponsive keyboard ? W7 log no suggest Cannot log in to W7 laptop ? unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard a workaround solution Cannot log in to W7 laptop ? unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard to an issue I currently have with a Windows Home Premium laptop This is an old laptop that I only use from time to time but it still has a number of files and photos on it that I don't have saved elsewhere Last time I used the laptop it was acting as if the Ctrl key was being pressed every - seconds which made the keyboard difficult to use because it triggered shortcuts as I tried to type Ctrl O Ctrl S etc Because I don't use the laptop as my main machine I decided that I'd uninstall the keyboard driver from within the Control Panel and just use the on-screen keyboard going forward Following this I powered the machine on a couple of days ago and panicked when I discovered that I couldn't get the Ease of Access dialog box to display on the login screen to allow me to enable the on-screen keyboard It doesn't produce any kind of error it simply does nothing when the button located in the left-hand corner is clicked At this point I was still hopeful that I could get around the issue by connecting a standard USB keyboard but this is also completely unresponsive although it does appear to be getting power from the laptop because the Caps Lock indicator light is lit I've tried a few alternatives connecting the keyboard before powering up during the start up process and also at the log in screen Additionally in the hope that it would automatically install a driver in the background and eventually allow the keyboard to function I left the machine running for about minutes but still nothing So just to confirm the machine has only a single user account set up on it which is password protected I can't proceed past the log in screen at all the laptop's default keyboard is unresponsive Ease of Access OSK dialog box will not display and the standard USB keyboard I have here doesn't appear to be helping either I also considered trying the above in safe mode before realising that I couldn't even do that without a keyboard unless there's another way of accessing this that I'm not aware of Any ideas - Thanks

Preferred Solution: Cannot log in to W7 laptop – unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you are just interested in recovering your data to save elsewhere you could purchase an external enclosure for about $8.00 at Newegg, remove the HDD from the laptop and install it in the external enclosure.  You can then attach it to another computer via a USB cable (which comes with the enclosure) and access your data to recover what you want.

Yesterday I started having a severe issue with my Asus X L laptop keyboard They keyboard is almost unresponsive and types randomly by itself spamming Randomly Types Laptop and Unresponsive Keyboard random numbers letters and Laptop Keyboard Unresponsive and Types Randomly symbols The steps I have taken to try and resolve the problem are as follows Checked for any stuck keys Laptop Keyboard Unresponsive and Types Randomly Rebooted my laptop Ran a full system scan for any malware Checked for driver updates Performed a system restore - this worked initially for about ten minutes but after shutting down my laptop and going to bed the problem persisted in the morning I tried an earlier recovery afterward but it didn t fix the issue either Checked for any hardware changes in device manager As far as I know there has not been any physical damage or liquid spills onto the keyboard and a usb keyboard does work when plugged in however it is sometimes overridden by the laptop s keyboard issues I would really appreciate some help as I don t have a lot of money right now and the laptop is just out of warranty I ve had it for just over a year nbsp

I have a Dell XPS 420 desktop with Windows Vista. I shook the mouse and clicked a few times to wake the computer up, and was met with a black screen with nothing visible but the cursor. I could move the cursor, but the keyboard controls such as Ctrl+Alt+Delete and F8 were unresponsive. Following these attempts, I tried turning the computer off and on using the power button on the tower, but the computer would not shut down. The display settings buttons on the monitor worked, as well as the slideshow menu on the tower, but these provided no solutions. Help, please!

A:Solved: Black screen with cursor, unresponsive keyboard controls

To do a hard shutdown, you need to press and hold in the power button for about 5 seconds.

After it powers off, wait about 30 seconds, then press the power button and see if Windows loads.

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Hey guys!

I recently got a Casio keyboard, with a new MIDI cable.

I'm a music artist and I'm totally new with this 'keyboard-to-computer-via-MIDI' stuff.

I don't know how to connect my Casio Keyboard to my computer with a MIDI cable. I've mostly been using Mixcraft's music library, but I want to start something new with my new keyboard.

Can someone PLEASE tell me how I can connect my keyboard to my laptop via MIDI?

I've looked at other forum posts and contacted a few music artists..........they had nothing.

Please help!

Thanks!

I prefer the Comfort On Screen Keyboard Pro and have installed it. After every sleep or reboot I have to manually disable the standard Touch Keyboard from  Toolbar entry on the Taskbar.

A:XPS 12 - anyone know how to permanently disable the standard On Screen Keyboard (a.k.a. Touch Keyboard).

Hi johnwprice,
Go to Control Panel -> Ease of Access -> Ease of Access Center -> ?Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard? and uncheck the ?Use On-Screen Keyboard" option and click Ok.
Then, click on ?Change administrative settings" options and check the "Apply all settings to the logon desktop" and press Apply.

Hi, I do a lot of typing at night time and the click of my keyoard's keys can be quite noticeable when there is pure silence. I have a Logitech K520 which isn't so loud but I would really love a keyboard that has the same type of keys as my Samsung laptop which are practically silent. Most laptops I've tried have similar keyboards in that the key doesn't travel far at all and there is no 'clicky' sounds either.

I have no idea what I would search for as I don't know what the style of keyboard is called. There are various names on the market, 'soft touch', 'quiet touch', 'low profile' etc etc but nothing that specifically identifies a laptop style.

I would just like a wireless laptop keyboard basically, even if it's the same size as a laptop keyboard but preferrably full sized.

Thanks very much for any advice

A:laptop keyboard does not work but works fine with usb keyboard

The fact that a USB keyboard works fine when your built in one doesn't, proves that it is the keyboard itself (or connectors) that is damaged/defective, otherwise, if it were a software problem, the external keyboard would do the same.

I have a Dell XPS 400 desktop running Windows XP. Recently, my wireless keyboard became almost unresponsive. It will type, but the delay per keystroke is about a second. I changed batteries, checked the range with my wireless receiver, and nothing improved. So I assumed it was a bad keyboard and bought a wired USB keyboard. It's still doing the same thing. I checked the keyboard settings through control panel, and everything is set to its fastest setting. I reinstalled the driver, and the device status says it is working properly. What's even stranger, before Windows boots up the keyboard appears to work fine. I went into one of my setup menus before Windows booted and the keyboard was immediately responsive. I'm thinking it's a Windows thing, but I'm at a loss as to what it might be. Any suggestions?

I have just bought a new Dell Laptop with Vista OS. When I try to use the keyboard for online programmes such as Hotmail, the keyboard becomes very unresponsive and requires several strokes before a character appears on the screen. When I use offline programmes such as Microsoft Word there is not a problem .... yet.

A:Unresponsive Keyboard

If it were 10-12 years ago, I'd say it sounds like an IRQ conflict, but today's hardware and OSs should not have these problems any more.

Since it is brand new, it may pay to contact Dell's Tech Support and run it by them. It sounds like it would baffle their Tier 1 support and you'll be bumped up to someone that might actually be able to answer your question.

The keyboard on my emachine M5310 laptop is not responding. The touchpad works, but only to move the curser around (no tapping). Mouseclicks also fine. I have tried rebooting, uninstalling the keyboard, checking the keyboard status via device manager ("functioning properly" - ***?). Any other ideas? I'm limited in my troubleshooting to solutions that don't require using the keypad. Thanks.

A:Unresponsive keyboard

If Windows shows it working properly and hardware does not work then it maybe hardware problem, possibly a connector malfunction, nothing serious. You should take the laptop to nearest computer repair shop and have it checked.

A:unresponsive keyboard

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It could be a faulty keyboard, but I think I'd be inclined to suspect your Logitech keyboard is at the bottom of your problems.

I once tried to use a Microsoft Intellimouse (wired) along with a Logitech wireless keyboard and had to go back to my old Microsoft keyboard in the end.

You could try re-installing the driver for your Logitech keyboard, and then use Revo Uninstaller to remove it by doing a scan of your registry to make sure all installation remnants are removed then re-install your Microsoft keyboard.

If that doesn't do it then you should consider returning the keyboard as it could well be faulty (did you remember to press the wireless connection button on the bottom of the keyboard?).

I've noticed recently that when I'm typing, I've been getting alot of spelling errors in my words, in the form of letters missing from the words.

At first I thought I just wasn't pressing the keyboard hard enough, but even when I'm consciously typing quite aggressively to stop this, I still get missing letters in my writing.

Even as I type these words, I'm having to go back on myself every few sentences to add a space or missing letter.

The keyboard isn't unresponsive permanently, it just sometimes doesn't recognise any input for a split second.

A:Unresponsive Keyboard.

First thought is to clean the keyboard from debris. Turn it upside down and shake and watch the debris fall out...then take a can of compressed air and blow the keyboard keys throughly. Worst case scenario would be to disassemble the keyboard and see if there are any stuck keys or damaged keys or key mechanisms...then while your in there blow it out making absolutely sure there is nothing left to cause the keys to stick.

Hello! Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Well, if it was after a virus you cleaned out it may have affected your keyboard driver. Check your manufacturers site (Use the on screen keyboard if you need it)

Try Defragging the hard drive, some space may be marked as allocated when it is not.

After dwnload VMware (known for killing kboard function ) I followed reccommed solution (regedit) which wrked for others. Alas, not for me.

The board lights up on boot, infact, intrestingly, it wrks for BIOS settings . However, once Win loads, kboard lights die, it becomes utterly unresponsive. (Mouse wrks fine)

Not in any particular order...

1. tried other kboards
2. win xp rcovery console
3. uninstall/reinstall kboard and drivers
4. unistall/reinstall all usb root hubs (Kboard is usb mouse combo via adapter)
5. Virus, Spybot sys scan
6. google search
7. kboard tech sites

...all to no avail...

At this point, os re-install looms large, though I'm loath to follow that route (seems awfully ham-fisted) since symptom seems to suggests a software/driver issue, no?

Would appreciate anyone's take on this peculiarity.

I was thinking of just resetting the bios. Do you think that would work or is it something deeper? The computer is a Dell Desktop running XP Pro SP2.

Thanks for any help.

I do not know how to fix this, since I cannot even move the mouse to even get to the start button for it is frozen, can someone please help me please. Or tell me my options, is it the motherboard, please tell me it can be fixed. I am on a different computer awaiting your responses. Thanks very much.

Hi, I have a HPE Elite - 110f desktop and currently having some major problems with it.
I believe I hit some kind of virus or trojan that my AVG thing tried to force remove. AVG then restarted my computer.
After that, I cannot boot into windows at all. It has a completely black greyish screen even before the cursor appears (computer stays on like this forever).

I tried to go into safe mode, or make a system recovery but pressing f8 and f11 repeatedly to do it at start up does not give ANY response; as if I pressed nothing. I know its not because of the keyboard because I switched to a new one.
THe only thing that the computer responds to is f10, to the BIOS setup.

Don't know what to do at this point. ANY help at all would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

My tech guys at work are stumped by this problem, so I'm hoping you all can help me out. I use a Dell Latitude D630. I travel a lot. They keyboard on this laptop is unresponsive only when I try to use my laptop in flight. I have tried turning off or disabling anything that I thought might be using resources unnecessarily, but that did not help. Airplane time is valuable work time for me, and if my keyboard is dead then it is time wasted.
Any ideas?

A:selectively unresponsive keyboard

So it works OK on battery pw when not on an airplane? If so, there really are only two possibilities;
1 The keyboard has problems with the cabin pressure and or very low humidity that exists in an aircraft cabin in flight
2 Your laptop has a problem with electrical interference either from onboard aircraft systems or other portable devices being used inflight.

I'm going to lean towards an overheating video card. Check to see if it has a fan, and is spinning freely. If it doesn't, you can pick up a slot fan to mount just above it.

You may need to buy a new vid card if damage was done, but the slot cooler is cheap and worth a shot.

This is just started less than an hour ago. When I boot the computer, I cannot access the BIOS, or choose which OS I load. I was using Vista earlier, then shut down the computer and went to dinner. When I came back and booted the computer, I was unable to choose vista or windows 7 from the boot menu, so it took me straight into XP (not a bad thing, but I have some stuff installed only on vista). I can use the keyboard as soon as the login screen pops up. I tried moving the keyboard to another USB port, but that did not change anything. What do you guys think? I'm running a virus scan, but it would take quit a virus to do this.

A:Keyboard unresponsive during boot

You're probably going to need to plug a non-usb keyboard in if you have a port for it. Go into your BIOS and make sure you have USB Enabled for DOS, Enable Legacy USB, or something related to it. Save and restart, plug in your USB keyboard and see how it works. I've had Vista change BIOS settings on me before. I don't know how it did it, but it did.

Hi everyone,

Have a bit of an issue with Windows 10. Occasionally after an update something will go wrong and the PC will boot into the automatic repair. However when I get to the choose keyboard input screen, the keyboard and mouse are totally unresponsive.

Usually this goes a away after a couple of restarts, but it seems quite stuck now. The keyboard works fine to get me into Bios but after that goes back to the same unresponsive state.

If anyone had any idea of a possible fix I would be very grateful.

Many thanks,
Ricky

I could clear my computer of the infection and return some stuff back to normal but Ive been having a weird problem and that is that when ever I boot my computer I can access the bios settings and move up and down and ect, but if I press f8 to boot the computer in safe mode it enters the menu but after that the keyboard becomes unresponsive. The numlock key turns on and off when I ramdomly press the keys. I tried putting the windows xp cd and when the computer detects the cd on the boot up when it says "press the enter key to boot up from cd" the keyboard becomes unresponsive again. The thing is that when windows xp loads up everything is working alright. Thanks in advance ^_^

At seemingly random times, several keys  such as keys 6,7,Y,U,H,J,N,& M  had became completely unresponsive. Keys just stopped working for about 3 minutes, & working fine again after. Sometimes its for more than a few minutes and can be a nuisance. I performed several procedures such as Uninstalling the keyboard drivers, Changing the value from 2 to 0 of InitialKeyboardIndicators in Registry Editor, Turning On the filter Keys in Contorl Panel- ease of acces center, but non of these works. External USB keyboard & On Screen Keyboard Keys are working just fine.

Hi all. I run a computer lab (21 identical computers) in a small secondary school. Occasionally, the keyboard on a computer will cease to function. The issue is only resolved after reseating the USB cable, or restarting the machine. How can I further troubleshoot
to ascertain the problem?

Some more info:

* The issue mostly (always?) occurs after a local user has logged out.
* I am not running a Windows server environment.
* The computers are all on the same workgroup.
* Each computer has multiple local user accounts.
* All computers are running Windows 7 32 bit.
* All have all of their Windows updates
* All drivers are to date.

My grandmother was in the middle of typing an email. When she hit the shift key to make a capital letter, a box about sticky keys came up, and now neither keyboard will work. She has restarted the computer, unplugged/re-plugged in the auxilary keyboard, (before, even with the auxilary keyboard plugged in, she could still use the laptop keyboard), pressing the scroll lock key didn't do anyting either.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have an old Time laptop (so getting any drivers/chipsets will be a pain) that I'm using as a Home Theatre PC under my TV. I can wake up from standby with its power button, but not from its keyboard. Also, I can't do this using my Microsoft Wireless Desktop Keyboard, connected via USB (laptop doesn't have any PS2 ports).

I want to be albe to keep the laptop lid closed at all times and placed above my VCR, so having to open it every time I want to wake from standby is not ideal.

I've looked at all the APM properties for m/board and keyb but nothing. The BIOS says nothing about power management either.

Running Win XP SP2

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi,

Everything was working fine. Suddenly, when I typed on the usb keyboard, nothing happened. So I put it in a different usb port on the laptop, and it still didn't work. So I tried the laptop's own keyboard and still nothing. I'm not sure what is going on.

I tried deleting the keyboard driver from Device Manager but that did nothing. I tried searching for this problem but all the results seem to not apply to this specifically.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also... I'm a n00b that knows very little about computers so bear with me

When you deleted the keyboard driver for the laptop...did you reboot after doing so?

Does your BIOS call for USB  boot via USB device?

I have a HP vt6200 Omnibook laptop with German Keyboard. Recently my internal harddisk crashed and I replaced with a new IDE disk. I installed Windows XP (English US) afresh. Also installed the necessary drivers downloaded from HP site. Now the german keyboard is not working. It types multiple characters & behaves erratically. When I connect an external US English Keyboard, it works perfect. I tried changing the language/keyboard settings. It didn’t work.

I donot want to use German anymore on that laptop. All I want to use is only English. Now I am unable to use the laptop keyboard at all. Pls help !

I am currently running Windows Pro bit on my PC new computer I have found that in the last couple of months my keyboard has ceased working properly By this I mean most of my special characters no longer work properly Everything from quotes to question marks exclamation marks etc are no longer working or I get completely foreign characters AFter considerable investigation I have determined what is actually happening is that the OS is not recognizing my actual keyboard and is defaulting to the On Screen Keyboard OSK When looking at my device manager it shows an HID Keyboard device and an HID compliant Mouse I am actually using a Dell KM My keyboard and mouse are wireless I have tried uninstalling both working thru safe mode and recognize OS to Win keyboard, On Screen will Keyboard 7 not defaults uninstalling I have tried re-installing the correct drivers on several occasions and in several different ways but all to no avail The keyboard was even swapped out and tried on Win 7 OS will not recognize keyboard, defaults to On Screen Keyboard a nd computer it works on the nd computer I have also tried installing a completely different wired keyboard on the malfunctioning computer with the same negative results Existing restore points have the same issue and consequently none work I have tried searching for an updated driver but it tells me the best driver is already installed and I have searched the internet for other suggestions all to no avail It is clear to me that it simply will not accept any other keyboard or mouse driver I have also tried disabling the OSK but that too fails it still continues to go to the OSK even when configured not to Can anybody tell me or suggest something new for me to try I have even tried tech support for the computer manufacturer and their suggestion is to re-install windows This is NOT an option for me I feel my only recourse may be to go into the registry settings to try and fix which Im not afraid to do but I dont know where or what the correct settings would be Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated

Hello, I have a ThinkPad Yoga S1. The keyboard sometimes becomes unresponsive, while the external keyboard still works fine. The keyboard revives after going to sleep mode. I have had this issue since the beginning (2 month ago). The fact that it still works fine with the external keyboard incriminates the driver. But all drivers are up to date. (I made all the updates I could find.) And in the device manager, the status reads « This device is working properly ». Anyone else having the same issue, ... and its solution? Thanks,JC

Hi Jc-createlli,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with keyboard not working when system is on sleep mode on your ThinkPad Yoga S1.

Go to device manager and under keyboard adapter uninstall all the adapter and restart the system and check.

Run ThinkVantage system update utility and update all the drivers and application from that.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I have a problem that driving me mad.
When I press F2 or F12 from switch on the keyboard behave as it should,
however if try to load a self booting CD or Usb via F12 options the device is recognised
but any further key presses, the cursor just sits there flashing at me and the keyboard is unresponsive.
What makes it strange is that an external keyboard is recognised but the mirrors the internal one.
I have the latest bios update.

F2 into the bios - keyboard ok.
Boot into win7 - keyboard ok.
Insert bootable dos disc via F12 option- loads but keyboard none responsive.
I am thinking a partial corrupt bios,
Any one got any ideas as to problem or even a solution.

And what should happen on this step?

For me it sounds like problem with your bootable disc.
I have installed OS using different Microsoft discs or recovery USB medias and all you must do is to click most of times on NEXT button.

If keyboard works under BIOS and Windows I don't see any problem with keyboard there.

I am operating on Windows 7. When I turn it on, it will bring up the Toshiba logo then proceed to Advanced Options screen to: Repair your computer etc. It says to use the arrow keys to select, but the entire keyboard is unresponsive. Arrow keys, Enter keys, Esc. key, nothing works. In addition there is no count down clock that will automatically route you to the default selection. System is approx 3 to 4 years old.

Welcome!

Sounds like either a bad keyboard or corrupted install.

Disconnect the hard drive, and boot from the Installation disc. When you get to the language screen, plug the hard drive in again and select Rescan Disks.

Let us know if it works. That will help us diagnose the problem a bit more.

I'm not able to use the keyboard at all until Windows 98 starts loading. Once the Windows screen comes up, the lights go on and I can use it just fine. But before that, nothing. This is a problem I've been dealing with on-and-off for a while (the keyboard used to work properly at least half the time, but now isn't working at all prior to Windows starting). I'm pretty concerned about it. Especially considering that I need to be able to start the computer in safe mode since Norton Antivirus is causing a freeze at startup.

I don't know if there's anything at all that can be done, but here's hoping!

Ok so I regularly play video games and work on this laptop but for a while when ever I hold the w key and release it the key would still act as if it is being pushed down and would not stop holding itself down. This also happens when I switch tabs and when that happens the w key becomes unresponsive for a while then it is able to be used a couple seconds/minute later. I am not having luck with cleaning the keyboard since there is no space at all to stick a spray in to remove dust or a way I know of to remove the covers of the keyboard but all my other keys are good.

Hi peeps, I just bought an Alienware 17 R3 last week. I've installed Photoshop CC and SketchUp 2016. While using both programs my keyboard will randomly become unresponsive. I took it back to Best Buy last night and the service technician installed the latest BIOS upgrades (sorry - I really don't know much about computers so I am trying to repeat as much as he told me but I'm not terribly well-versed). Unfortunately the upgrades did not seem to help as it did it again twice today... I'm attaching a pic of my computer stats.

Also, I use an external 1Tb drive to store my projects and an Intuos Med Pro tablet to do my sketches.

Help?!?!?

I checked the BIOS and everything is as it should be. Keyboard works in BIOS and system utilities menus.

A:Satellite keyboard/touchpad unresponsive

BIOS provides USB support before Windows starts which is why it works in BIOS but not Windows.

I suggest the best place to start is recovering your files/folders. You can probably just skip to Step 2 for your case See How to recover your folders/files when Windows won?t boot

Then you can comfortably try fixing your computer (which might need a full reformat/reinstall)

Meat, On an older laptop, the backlights are most likely burning out. Here an install link
http://www.lcdpart.com/doc/ccflinstallation.html

If you replace the keyboard, and still has the problem, it a motherboard issue. Then you have to use an external.

I was reinstalling Windows 7 Professional, doing a clean install when it hit a hang up on the Completing Installation phase of the install. It was stuck there for 2 hours, so I forced the computer off and on...

It then did a lengthy disk check that I had admittedly ignored many times before, and fixed a bunch of errors by reverting them to their default destination. Then it did it again (to double check I'm guessing) and reset for the millionth time.

Well it gets back into what looks like is gonna be the install program again, and it gives me and error message telling me that there was an error and it needs to reset, which is virtually the only option.

Thats where the reset loop occurs. I can't do anything about it because my USB keyboard won't work during the bootup process...

What do?

I have changed the power settings to "Never" and now it does it after about 5 minutes if the computer is idle. As long as I am working on it, then it doesn't lockup.

Dell Inspiron 1545
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
P8700 @ 2.53 GHz
2.50 GHz , 3.46 GB of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 3

I have already done the following:

Changed the RAM with another Inspiron 1545.
Changed all Power Settings to "Never"
Run HiJackThis (Nothing pertinent)
Run Spybot, Ad-Aware, CCleaner, & AVG (nothing pertinent)
Not installed any new hardware (other than the RAM after this started happening)

Attempted to Defrag in Safe Mode and it will not get past 1% even after 48 hours!

Thanks for any and all help!

A:Keyboard and Mouse buttons unresponsive after being idle

Have you check device manager - properties - power management tab and allow the device to wake up this computer? Try reinstalling or look for the latest driver on Dell support site for the graphics chipset. Try removing currently used wallpaper and run a diagnostic test utility to check on your hard drive. You could also remove the recently RAM module to check on the difference.

Okay, So my Dvd drive quit being recognized by windows so even though it worked I couldnt use it. So I checked the internet for my problem and they said I needed to go into my registry and delete the Hkey upper and lower filters in a specific place and then the drive would work. I did this and now my drive works but the keyboard and mouse and other usb things dont work. Since I cant use a keyboard or mouse I cant restore the values and cant really do anything except to run diagnosis etc. after f2 or f12 in start up. They mouse and keyboard work fine in there. But I cant launch anything to restore function from these screens at least that i know. Any ideas out there?

This is the second time I've bought a new laptop in 2 weeks, because my old Dell's hard drive crashed.  The first replacement HP wouldn't connect to Wifi and Geek Squad couldn't help from the store, so just traded out for this new one, and that problem is solved.  I'm not sure if my Win 10 is 32 bit or 64 bit, BTW, and don't know if it matters for this issue.  I was on my laptop last night and the keyboard kept acting wonky--slow response and I'd have to hit a key a few times to get the letter/number to type at times.  Also, even though I hit the numlock key, it wouldn't stay locked.  Please tell me this is a quick driver reset.  I really don't want to go back to Best Buy again.

Hi ,Welcome back to the HP Support Forums! I understand you are having an issue with the keyboard not responding. I will be glad to help you. Please download and install Synaptics TouchPad Driver.  I know this is for the touch pad, but sometime the touchpad can slow down the keyboard. As both are input devices. Here is a document for Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting (Windows 10, 8). Please keep me informed of how things went. If you require further assistance, let me know and I will gladly do all I can to help you. Please let me know if this resolves the issue by marking this post as "Accept as Solution".To simply say thanks, click the Thumbs up below!  Thanks.

I got a new machine recently and it all works fine except the operating system seems to randomly freeze When it does the only way I have found to get & then randomly keyboard freezes. unresponsive. Windows Mouse out of it is to manually plug it out and restart On freeze the keyboard and mouse become entirely unresponsive the cursor does not move nor do either click buttons do anything if I'm typing somewhere the text Windows randomly freezes. Mouse & keyboard then unresponsive. does not appear Windows randomly freezes. Mouse & keyboard then unresponsive. and Ctrl Alt Del doesn't bring up the usual screen I'm running windows home premium on a bit machine I haven't found anything quite like this problem around so I thought it deserved a new topic by itself I can't think of what to do to determine the cause or any potential solution Everything's up to date I think all the drivers are too I put in different virus software 'cause I thought that might be it Any ideas anyone Edit The last time it happened I tried putting the keyboard and mouse into different USB ports but that didn't work Edit I just went to my device manager and manually checked for updates for all the drivers and it turned out my graphics card needed an update I updated it myself about three weeks ago so I discarded this as a potential problem So I installed the update If the problem persists I'll reply to this message

Hello -

My computer was suddenly not powering on. I replaced the power supply, and the computer booted up, albeit with 1 short beep followed by 3 short beeps at POST. I'm not sure what BIOS it is, but it is a 3-ish year old Asus motherboard.

The problem now is - it will boot to the Win XP login prompt, however it is completely unresponsive to my USB keyboard and mouse. Oddly, I believe it is providing USB power because I have another peripheral (USB MIDI synthesizer) hooked up that powers up just fine.

I tried pulling 3V CMOS battery, different USB mice/keyboards etc, no luck. Any ideas why the USB mouse/keyboard are not working after replacing PSU?

thanks!

Hi all I'm new to the forum and after reading through some of the topics I figured this is the best place get some help. So this is what happen, I just installed a new screen and hinges on a laptop, I booted it up to see if there was any other problems with the laptop and found out that half the keyboard went out and the WiFi won't work, I shut it down retraced my steps saw that everything was hooked up right turned back on now the mouse wont work on top of that. I don't know if it was problem before hand cause i was just asked to repair the screen and hinges. The computer is gateway NE56R series running windows 8. i heard updating the bios would help but i cant get in the system.

A:installed hinges and screen on laptop problems keyboard

I will as why the screen and hinge needed to be replaced ??
,most obvious is was dropped or some other physical accident ,so its possible that the laptop's motherboard/ connection were damaged
I always hook them to a regular computer monitor to check that everything works before I even order a replacement screen

Hey.

My Toshiba Laptop won't shut off. Whenever I press the off button it just puts it into Sleep/Hibernation/Power-save. Whenever I fold down the laptop it puts it into Power-save mode as well. There's no way of shutting it off! I leave it on so the battery will run out and it goes into power-save!

The keyboard and mouse-pad won't respond and it's stuck in the login screen! There's no way to turn it off or to fix this problem!

Someone please help!

I have a HP G62 notebook and running Windows 7 home premium. In the last few days, if I walk away from the computer for a few minutes, the screen goes blue (I assume into sleep or hibernate mode) and usually I can just move the mouse or press a key and the icons come back up but now, the keyboard and mouse do not work at that point and I have to do a hard reboot. Also, I noticed that when double clicking icons or webpages, the computer sometimes does not respond at all. Any ideas of what could be happening?

Hello - all of a sudden yesterday my keyboard became completely unresponsive. It would type random numbers as if it was held down ie" 55555555333333333336yyyyyy" and would continue non stop. Nothing on the keyboard was responsive. The only way I could delete anything was to highlight what was typed and since the keyboard was acting like numbers were held down it would just retype over it. I tried different ports/keyboards same thing.P

I cant even get into bios to boot from disk to reformat because the keyboard is unresponsive. I reformatted recently and dont really web browse on that computer so I think a virus/spyware would be rare but I dont know.

Any ideas, hoping that its not a burnt motherboard.. the mouse is fine.

Thank you

A:Keyboard unresponsive, types random number keys held down

1) Try a different keyboard
2) Maybe there's too much dust under the keys and it's interfering somehow. I seem to recall hearing something about that once.

A:Video turns black and grey, keyboard/mouse becomes unresponsive

May be overheating? Did you put thermal paste on the processor? Do you have an aftermarket CPU cooler?

Also check bios to see if there are any factory overclock settings or something. I would just reset the BIOS to defaults.

For the hell of it, and to reduce variables, unplug the DVD burner temporarily.
