I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My HP Pavilion dv7-1014ca Entertainment Notebook is running incredibly hot. The fan is on pretty much all the time. The BIOS is fully updated and I've vaccumed the vents and the fan. I keep my laptop on hard, flat surfaces, and yet at times it's almost too hot to touch. the entire bottom section of the notebook will be remarkably hot. Any idea what the problem could be? I've also had moments when my notebook shuts down without any warning for seemingly no reason. Could it be overheating?

I have an ECS 848P-A7 motherboard and a P4 CPU, and when I boot up the computer, I get sometimes get a message that says:

"warning CMOS settings have been changed. Press F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup"

However, I only get the message occasionally. Most of the time I get a blank screen right when I press the power button and my moniter says: "RGB No Input Signal"

My power supply obviously works since power comes on, RAM is good since I tried it in a different computer, and the video card works since I also tried that in a different computer. I think this is a CMOS setting problem, rather than hardware related. There should be no problem if I clear CMOS by repositioning the jumper on the motherboard, right? Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

Clearing the CMOS should reset the BIOS to failsafe values, yes.

Hello. Long time no post
Never seen anything like this, maybe you have.
Soyo 7IWM with celeron 600, no frills basic pc with iomega
zip 100 internal that Shows as B drive floppy. It works fine, but
how did this happen? Also, the info on POST says Pentium III.
Someone else's settings??
Thirdly, the mobo stays ' On ' after shutdown meaning
a light shows on the board and keyboard remain on.

My question is .............could I have corrected all this by
clearing cmos jumper before Fdisk/Format ????

How about clearing it now?? Would that screw up anything
or is bios smart enough to figure it all out??

Uncharted waters again,
- M

A:Should I clear CMOS?

In the bios, make sure the cpu freq is set at 9 multiplier and 66mhz front side bus if you really have a 600 celeron.

Sounds like wake on lan is enabled

I have a PC that stays on a black screen when I switch it on and I have to switch it on and off several times before Windows will load. I am told that the CMOS may be corrupted and needs to be cleared and re-set.

Does anyone know of a less drastic alternative?

Does this mean that I will have to reinstall all of the software currently on the computer?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

A:Clear CMOS

no clearing the cmos isnt a drastic alternative. but this doesnt seem to be a cmos corruption problem. clearing the cmos is very easy, and the only consequence is that you may have to readjust your BIOS settings. and were here to help you with that too here. and welcome to tsg

Yesterday I was, foolishly, messing around in BIOS. I changed the Primary Video Adapter from PCI to onboard, don't ask me why. Next I found that my screen went black. No information from the computer is received through the cabel even though the computer is powered on. I have tried resetting CMOS and removing the battery on motherboard but no good.

What should I do? Please help!

Welcome to SF!

Try removing the PCI card and using the onboard ports until you get the BIOS switched back.

You might not even have to remove the video card. Just try the onboard ports for now.

Is there a utility that will clear the CMOS from Windows 7?

Please, no advice on how to do it by pressing a key on boot. It's gotta' be done from Windows or not at all.

I am just having an OCD moment. I know I can clear CMOS settings by taking out the battery. But, I am trying to learn how to clear it the "right" way using the MOBO jumpers. Here is the link to the exact Dell GX270 desktop mini-tower I am trying to clear. I believe I followed the instruction, at the bottom of the web page; but the CMOS password prompt requirement is still there. I grounded the MOBO by pushing the power button. I took the shunt off the password jumper and put it on the RTC jumper for about 1minute. I put the shunt back on the password jumper. Although it did reset the RTC, it didnt clear the CMOS password. What am I doing wrong?

A:How to clear CMOS using Mobo jumpers

The best way, if there is no Clipable jumper, is to remove the batter for an hour or longer. The press the power supply button and hold it in for 12 seconds or more, before you replace the CMOS batter.
Otherwise, the jumper method varies from computer to computer, and motherboard to motherboard. On manufacturered computers such as Dell, HP, and so on, the jumper technique is located on the service manual you will find online... Same with most motherboards: There will be a place in the manual for shorting plugs or CMOS jumpers, etc.
Some desktop motherboards, and most laptop motherboards, have actual wires that must be clipped or disconnected.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
If removing the CR2032 motherboard battery and pressing the power button for 15 seconds didn't clear the passwords then the BIOS retention scheme on the A310 is similiar to a laptop.  Unfortunately further discussion on ways to circumvent the BIOS password is prohibited by forum rules.  I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support to see what other options are available to you. You might also check with the re-seller and have them contact the previous owner for the required password.  I can't imagine that news of your password situation would be good for their future business.

My friend's computer stopped working, so I looked at it for him and noticed the fan on this PSU died. I replaced the PSU, and no luck. So I figured the motherboard must have been damaged when the fan died on the old PSU. I replaced the motherboard as well, and eureka! However, everytime you restart or shutdown, you will have to clear the CMOS to get the computer to see POST and boot successfully.

Any ideas?

A:Solved: Must clear CMOS every restart to see POST

I figured it out. So I guess I posted too soon. The RAM wasn't compatible or the settings in the BIOS weren't correct for the RAM. Once I replaced the RAM, it worked beautifully.

Before replacing, I tried to alter the settings in the BIOS for his RAM, but nothing seemed to work. But replacing it with some Corsair RAM fixed it. Hope this helps someone else out.

Hi all. I have a Maxtor 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive with Native Command Queuing running off a ABIT AA8XE Motherboard. Here's the problem:

For the past Week and a half the HD hasn't been detected or has been showing up in the BIOS leaving me locked out of Windows XP. Just this morning though I cleared the CMOS on my motherboard and the everything is fine. The HD shows up as Primary slave and Windows boots right up. But then I shutdown my PC and turn it back on and it back to the same old trouble with the HD not there.

Anybody know what i'm experiencing here? Thanks in advance.

A:Hard Drive showing up only after i clear CMOS

That doesn't sound right. A SATA drive shouldn't be showing as "Primary Slave". Do you have another drive in there? IDE or SATA?

When you say the HDD isn't "there", you're talking about just not booting off it? Or that the POST shows no HDDs installed? Or the CMOS doesn't show it?

A:Computer only starting with CMOS jumper set to 'clear'.

The procedure to clear the CMOS is a little more involved that you described and may be the source of your problems. Try this:

1. Unplug the PC from the wall and put on your ESD (static discharge) strap.
2. Remove the battery from the mobo. (should be right next to the jumper).
3. Now move the jumper to the "clear CMOS" pins.
4. Move the jumper back to the regular pins after a couple of minutes.
5. Replace battery.
6. Plug PC back in and boot up into BIOS.

If the above doesn't help, then remove everything form the motherboard but 1 stick of RAM, the video card and the CPU/HSF (unplug all drives iincluding the hard drive) and do the above procedure again and see if you can get into BIOS.

Good luck.

Ok, I see a problem here with your post. Since you "wrote down" the bios password, you should have it. Laptops are not like desktops in that you can clear cmos and remove a bios password; this is done for security.

So in short clearing cmos will not solve your problem.

I can't find anything about this in the manual. As a matter of fact, the term "CMOS" does not even appear in the owner's manual.

How do I clear the CMOS on this Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop?

There is no hard disk in the computer so doing if from a bootable disk isn't possible. The system is not at present bootable from the CD either so I can't do it from DOS mode.

First of all what you did was pull the jumper that is used to reset the BIOS password so it sounds like you have done the right thing.

Around the jump (little plastic piece) there should be printed on the board PASS RESET or BIOS RESET or something of the like. Alot of times you have to pull the jumper, cycle the power, then put the jumper back.

A tour through the ABIT manual, or a discussion with the ABIT tech support people should take you to a fix. I suspect you have a minor setup problem, and if you go back through the checklist when rested and not frustrated, you will come down to a solution. I doubt that it is anything serious.
Press the shutdown button for 12 seconds. When off, remove your CMOS battery for a few minutes. Now look for little, but obvious things.

My device is 3 months old and I recently updated the BIOS through the HP assistant and am now receiving an error message close to 'CMOS checksum value is invalid. System will reboot with default values. Please check BIOS to see if any changes have occured (as close as I can remember)' System then boots OK. I am wondering what is causing this. Is the battery already dying? This has now happened three times in a week and also the clock is reseting itself to 05:00 everytime.

A friend recently gave me an older dell lattitude c610. She said she couldn't get it to work anymore and didn't need it. I found that the year, mo. & date & time keep having to be set each time I try to get on. I went to the dell website but couldn't find the CMOS battery location on the schematic it showed. Does anyone know where it is and how to get to it to change it. That would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

I can't find a way to open the CMOS on my HP Pavilion model # 6573Z I've tried all the " F " keys and some other key combinations, but all I can pull up is the BIOS, not the CMOS.

A:Can't enter CMOS on HP Pavilion 6573Z

It's the BIOS, you get the message from.Under normal conditions, when the amount of RAM has been changed, you get the message, enter the BIOS, save the settings and reboot the computer. That's it.You are expecting our help, we are expecting your response !!!

I have this Presario 1810 that wasn't saving the time, so I opened it up and replaced the CMOS battery, it was one of those tiny 3V li jobs.

Well, the clock now stays, but the video is all messed up. Now when I start it up, it just rolls and rolls, slowly washing out to white.

What happened? I took battery back out, same thing no difference.

What the heck did I do? This thing has no battery, just runs off the power cord.

Just removing the battery and replacing the battery doesn't allow the accumulated charge in the board's capacitors to dissipate. Leaving the battery out of a few hours (or overnight) wil allow the charge to dissipate or the same result can be achieved by pressing and holding down the Power button (after turning off the power at the wall)

My usual procedure is:

Remove power from the system.
Hit the power button to discharge the capacitors.
Move the CCMOS jumper to the clear position. (or press the CMOS button)
Remove the battery from the motherboard.
Spend an hour doing stuff you wouldn't be neglecting if you didn't have a computer
Replace the battery.
Place the jumper back in the normal position.
Restore power and boot up immediately into BIOS.
Select "Load Optimized Defaults" and set the recommended voltage for your RAM
Save & exit.
On reboot, go directly into BIOS and set the recommended timings for your RAM and any other options you'd like to set (i.e. boot order, voltages, power saving etc.)

My stepson has an HP Pavilion dv1000 notebook. The power supply gets extremely hot and seems to be melting the tip to the plug where it connects to the notebook. Does this seem to be a problem with the notebook or only with the power supply. Any help would be appreciated.

A:HP Pavilion notebook

wow that is pretty hot... does it always run that hot, or does it only run that hot when he's gaming, or watching a movie? could just be a demanding laptop, but then again you could take it to a PC specialist (comp usa or local computer shop) and get the powersupply checked out. dang if it's melting the tip thats pretty hot... My dad's apple powerbook gets up to 75 degrees celcius when he's just surfing the web and stuff, so hot you have to take it off your legs if you don't want to burn yourself. so get it checked out, might just be a demanding laptop.

I have installed Windows 10, a clean copy of windows installation has been done with full format of c drive. So, after a successfull installation of win10 in my HP Pavilion dv6-7024tx, I ran windows updates to make sure it gets all driver for its hardware automatically, it did though and was absoultely fine expect one audio problem relating to micro (not working), I couldn't notice that time. I also installed HP support assistance for further assistance to make sure everything work just okay. Things to describe here, everything works absolutely fine without the built in Micro issue for Audio device. It is litterally not working to input audio anymore here. In my previous Win7 which was given in factory default setup, had BeatAudio driver and I saw that software and everything was Okay earlier.

A:Re: hp pavilion 15 notebook Usb 3

Hi, It is great to upgrade system to Windows 10, but in the same time, series of issues occur, like the USB device issue. After upgrading the system to Windows 10, you find that your USB device cannot connect to your PC. You may need to plug your external devices like MP3, pen drive, printer, etc. to your computer through the USB ports. So it is very inconvenient that the USB ports don?t work properly. Solutions below may help you fix the USB port issue. Since your USB device works properly before you upgrade the system, the problem most probably is not caused by the USB device. But you can also plug the USB device to another computer. If it unfortunately doesn?t work, you can consider replacing the device. Following are the solutions to figure out the problem. Solution 1: Check if the problem is caused by power supply issue 1. Unplug the power supply and charger plug from your PC.2. Restart your PC. Connect your USB device to the PC again. Then you can plug the power supply.Solution 2:The Power Management would also be the cause of the USB problems. Windows is set to shut down your USB controller to save power by default, sometimes it won?t be able to power it back up. So try following steps to prevent Windows from ?managing? power to your USB controller or the devices.1. Open Device Manager.2. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers branch.3. Double-click the USB Root Hub device, and click the Power Management tab. (if there?s more than one USB Root Hub device, repeat these steps for each one.)4. Turn off the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option, and clickOK button. Solution 3: Go to Device Manager to check for the driver statusThe problem most probably is caused by driver issues. Drivers may not be updated to work with Windows 10. If that?s the case, you can resolve the problem by updating the drivers. 1. In Device Manager, expand Other devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers.2. If you see drivers with yellow mark under these two categories. You need to update the drivers. You can update the drivers manually.Alternatively, you can use a driver update tool to help update drivers automatically. Driver Easy is one of driver update tools online. After you install Driver Easy, use it to scan your computer to detect all problem drivers. If there is problem with the USB driver, Driver Easy will detect it and recommend the new driver. With Driver Easy, the USB issue can be resolved easily. Driver Easy has Free version and Paid version. You can use the Free version to download new drivers, but you are required to use the downloaded driver files to install the drivers manually step by step. And the download speed is limited. To save more time, you can use the Paid version. With Paid version, all drivers will be updated automatically. More over, you can enjoy free technical support guarantee. If you use the Paid version to try resolving the problem but the problem persists, you can contact us for further assistance. Paid version offers 30-day money back guarantee. You can ask for a full refund if you want within the guarantee period. If the problem cannot be resolved, the USB ports might be damaged. You may need to replace the damaged ports. If the solutions above do not work for you, you can take your PC to the repair store to have it fixed, as the problem might be caused by hardware issues.

Can you try an external monitor? Disconnecting all extra hardware (drives) and replacing the memory are some things to try.

Nothing weird about CPU and chipset getting warm - BIOS is exactly that (Basic) and does not bother with power savings and such.

Hi,I have ongoing issues with my HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-P287SA, Windows 10.  Yesterday it would not boot, instead it flashed the caps-lock LED at me once which I beleive is a CPU issue. I did a hard reset on it (took the battery out ect.) and it booted and worked normally all day. This moring it again won't boot again but this time it beeps twice, waits a few seconds and then beeps twice again, five tinmes in total, and then it flashes the caps-lock LED twice, waits, and then twice again. It won't boot at all, even after a hard reset.  What does the beeping mean, what is the problem here?

I have been using my HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-p174na for casual use (a couple of times a week, nothing strenuous at all) since I purchased it a year and a half ago. Yesterday I completed a spreadsheet and checked/sent some emails and then turned it off and put it on charge overnight. This morning I unplugged it and put it away. Then on getting it out to use again this evening I cannot get it to start. I have checked a lot of support pages and searches for the problem and have tried all solutions I have come across (hard resets, attempting turn on with and without battery and/or AV power cord). Nothing seems to work. There are no flashing lights or noises coming from the notebook at all. There also seems to be no damage to any of the cables or power equipment. Please advise what course of action I should now take.

You dmps are showing code 116, and that can be a problem as small as a driver, but can be hardware, such as memory or worse
You can update the driver.
If it is anything else it is most likely hardware related. Since it is new, you may want to exercise the Warranty. I know from past experience, too many changes will void the warranty.

A:HP Pavilion Notebook Not Booting

Nice machine and configuration.
I would first try removing two memory modules, and attempting a boot with the third.. then if that doesn't work, change modules until you have tried all three.
It is difficult to trouble-shoot a machine like that... but we are seeing a LOT of ealy failures in the large laptops hard drives from 250 GB to 500 GB, so suspect that your hard drive might be bad. A good test would be to try any other known good hard drive from 80 GB on up to 500 GB... can you borrow one, then try to format and install it.
If still dead when you change memory and hard drive, it is time to get it back to HP for warranty work.
Anything you do that is not memory and not a hard drive will void your warranty.

Hi, The following link shows it specs: It has 2GB of dedicated video card and MAY (yes may) have up to over 3,000 MB of available system RAM (to make around 6GB). It can go up to 6GB when required, 4.1 is a snapshot number when you are looking at. Again, this number is not a fixed number. Regards.

My HP Pavilion Notebook  Product No:  P1A79UA#ABA  On Windows 10 keeps hibernating for no apparent reason.  This has happened since I bought the laptop new about 10 months ago.  Today it happened about 15 times (sometimes it will go weeks at a time without happening).  This occurs while I'm actively working on the computer (e.g. actively typing or browsing), not just when the computer is idle.I use the HP recommended power settings and have the advanced setting of Hibernate set to Never.Any help would be great.

Hello,I tried to search the cpu upgrade information by following the instructions the website gave me. And I got lost since there's no cpu upgrade information link. I tried to search my motherboard's specification for upgrading the cpu, but I'm totally out of idea how. So, here's the informations about my laptop. Is it possible for me to upgrade my cpu? If so, what kind of CPU would you recommend? thank you.Operating System : Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bitSystem model : HP pavilion dm1 Notebook PC (HP Pavilion dm1-3206au Entertainment )BIOS : InsydeH20 version CCB.03.60.43F.12Processor : AMD E-350 (2CPUs) 1.6 GhzRAM : 6GBSo, I wonder what kind of CPU match for my computer's specifications. If there's anything else you need, let me know. Thanks.

I want to upgrade the RAM from 4 to 8GB (16 if possible) and upgrade the OS to one with a longer support life - I'm thinking Windows 7 or 8.1. Is it best to do the upgrades serially and which should I do first? What RAM should I buy i.e. ordering info? Which OS do you recommend and where is the best place to buy it and the preferred media. Thanks to those forum members in advance for your advice.butchiepoo

A:Upgrade HP Pavilion Notebook - RAM and OS

Hi, Please use the following manual: RAM: page 2 gives you RAM specs and max RAM supported. Page 67 gives you part number, you can use part number to order from HP or online stores. Please note: this is an old machine and RAM could be a bit hard to find now.For OS: Windows 7 drivers are available on itshomepage: You are much better to upgrade to Windows 7 than others because HP supports it. For OS, you can buy from a computer shop or order from Microsoft. Please note again, this machine is 8 years old. Please do not waiste more money on it. Regards.

Trying to find out if the HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-ab247cl has an internal battery and what it would mean if and when the battery fails.  Or if it is a replacable battery without sending it in to replace. Thank You

A:HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-ab247cl

crabman198 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! All laptops have internal CMOS batteries as they are needed to retain the CMOS settings when the laptop is shut down. This is the link to the Maintenance and Service manual for your PC: On page 54, it shows the steps for accessing and removing the battery. If you remove the battery, that will reset the CMOS settings -- but you can easily change them once the battery is replaced and you restart the laptop.Good Luck

I'm having problem with my HP Pavilion laptop. When I first got it which is 3 days ago it was fine. But somehow it didn't boot up suddenly. Blank screen, no led indicators, nothing. The battery indicator did light up when I connect the charger suggesting that the battery is fine. When I press the power button it does nothing. The power button did lights up though. I did try leaving it just to see if it actually going to boot and it does, but only after 4 hours. But now it just won't boot. Please help. I can't send it for warranty until next week since I'm away. Thanks in advance.

Try performing a repair installation. This will preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.
Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation.
A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc.
If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed,  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.
Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.
Part A, Steps 1a - 6a
The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc.
1a)  To burn a ISO file to a DVD please download ImgBurn and install it.
2a)  Insert a blank DVD into your CD/DVD drive tray, and then close the tray.
3a)  Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.

4a)  Click on the Browse for a file icon:

5a)  Locate the ISO file you want to burn, and click on the Open button.
6a)  Click on the blue arrow to start burning the bootable DVD.

Please note:  In order to boot from this DVD you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.
Part B, Steps 1b - 10b
1b)  Place the installation disc in the tray of the CD/DVD drive, close the tray and restart the computer.
2b)  You will be prompted to press any key to start the installation, I find the space bar handy.
At this point the setup process will load files, this will take several minutes.
3b)  You will now need to choose the  Language, Time, currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use.
After this is done click on Next.

4b)  Click on the Repair your computer link at the bottom-left of the Install Windows window.
This link will begin the Windows 7 System Recovery Options.

5b)  System Recovery Options will now search your hard drive(s) for any Windows 7 installations.  This will take several minutes.
No participation is required on your part at this time, wait till it has finished and the next window opens.

6b)  Choose the Windows 7 installation that you'd like to perform the Startup Repair on, then click on Next

7b)  Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.

For a future reference, there are several other diagnostic and recovery tools available in the Windows 7 System Recovery Options including System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Command Prompt.
8b)  The Startup Repair tool will now search for problems in the system files.
If Startup Repair finds a problem with any system files the tool may suggest a solution which you will need to confirm, or may solve the problem automatically.

9b)  Startup Repair will now attempt to repair whatever problems it found with system files.
Note:  If Startup Repair did not find any problems with system files you won't see this step.

Important: Your computer may or may not restart several times during this repair process.  This is normal, you should allow it to continue until you see the Restart your computer to complete the repairs window.
10b)  Click on Finish, this will restart your computer.

It is possible that the Startup Repair will not be able to fix the problem.  If the Startup Repair tool determines ... Read more
