Preferred Solution: Just one last darn cookie!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Just one last darn cookie!!

Hi jrobin,

Glaswegian had given you a list of downloads. This one will take care of that cookie for you along with many others:

Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, and save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

hi, just info gathering here; anyone know about http cookie monter intrusion attacks. I have mozilla firefox-latest version 1-0-4, for awhile,.. but just recently my Norton's is detecting/halting quite a few 'http cookie monster' attack intrusion attempts while I browse with Firefox. It's determined to be a 'moderate' threat.... any input out there on this? [ps.I did some googling on this and went to Firefox site- just seeking members input here]

Alright, I'm trying to do a program for my intro to C++ class, the idea is to create a multiplication table. Problem is, teacher insists we use functions. I got it to work fine without them, but he insists we use them so I'm coming to you C++ experts for help.
I'm only getting one error:
error C2448: '<Unknown>' : function-style initializer appears to be a function definition

I'm attaching the code that I've wrote so far, also I'll comment where the error is indicated at in the compiler. Try not to be to judgemental on my code, I'm a newbie at this

I can't shut down my PC at nite for fear that the next day when I turn it on,I will have no connection and I get a blank screen. Is the light on the computer suppose to be yellow. Before it was,now its blue.Is the network adapter(Trendnet )card the problem?

A:My darn PC

The light on my screen at work is blue but goes to red when I lock it at night. The light on my home computer screen is green while I'm using it but yellow when I shut it down at night. I think that it all depends on the screen model that you use.
Are you saying that you're having a problem with your computer booting back up when you turn it on?

I had to replace the motherboard in my backup desktop I couldn't get the same Z motherboard it was discontinued but I did get a Z from another motherboard vendor I have a triple boot Win Win Win all on separate drives on that machine I thought Win would be a problem since its an OEM version but it was a breeze and just had to install the drivers for the different motherboard hardware It even activated without problems Win was a different story When I first booted to Win it came up with setting up hardware but never got 8 Darn Win any further after an hour I tried a couple of things including startup Darn Win 8 repair and it came back with a message that it couldn't repair it After several other attempts and about hours I decided to start over and do a clean install That worked however the Win Pro full license not an OEM required a call to Microsoft activation reading all the numbers and keying in new numbers to activate The update was installed this morning As there was nothing but the basic Win pre-release install I did a clean install on Win

I don't know how long ago it started but I have UAC popping up for programs that I know are safe that it never used to before. Like Firefox, Ad-aware, etc... Internet Explorer doesn't trigger it. Other than disabling UAC entirely, can I turn it off just for specific programs I use frequently and I know are safe?

Hello all,

New to the site and looking for assistance ;’)

Our PC has just been taken over by pop ups!  They are driving us crazy, every time you attempt to go to a different website or different area on a forum page Bam they are your face.

I am leery of downloading pop up blocker or pop up removal tools on the net.

We are running Windows 7 64 bit

I will admit I am very disappointed as we pay for Norton 360 and still have issues.

Looking forward to hearing back from you fellow forum members.

Cheers Trent

P.S. happy to post up screen shots of pop ups if required.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

If you have a highspeed connection please Run an online virus scan from TrendMicro Please select the ?autoclean? option when prompted to do so.

Open My Computer-->Tools-->Folder Options-->View-->Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files and click YES and then OK..

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft IIS] C:\WINNT\system32\syshost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Office] lserv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winrar] C:\WINNT\system32\winrar.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Services] C:\WINNT\symcapp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Office] lserv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [WMC_RebootCheck] C:\WINNT\inf\unregmp2.exe /FixUps
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Office] lserv.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [win update] wupfyny.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [MPlayer2_FixUp] C:\WINNT\inf\unregmp2.exe /Fixups

Delete the following Files/Folders in RED (delete folders if no filename is specified or they are RED) according to their directory (If you can't find them...do a search for them?make sure you have search hidden files, folders, sub directorys..ect enabled if it applys to your OS)

C:\WINNT\system32\syshost.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\winrar.exe
C:\WINNT\symcapp.exe
C:\WINNT\inf\unregmp2.exe
wupfyny.exe
lserv.exe <--locate and delete these 2.

Once done reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file to confirm what was removed and if it's clean or not.

Wow.. I haven't seen this infection for ages... that might have something to do with the fact that your OS is waaaaay behind on updates. I need a log from an updated version of HJT though. You can get it here: 'Hijack This!'.Post up a new log, and then we can get started.

ok here goes we know CRC error messages come from cd dvd NOT copying from one source location to the other namely pc rig i am NOT going thru a server box or another pc but i am trying to copy file mp wma from st H D to nd H D in on the SAME pc rig I copy SOME files mp s wma s but i get CRC error message which i am HOPING that someone here have an actual FREE prgm that will correct this problem I have sen jsut about ALL ads that say they fix CRC s amp REGISTRY this amp that but then end up saying download prgm amp will check amp let me know the errors amp what not Who out here knows a prgm that will check amp clear up all the so-called boo-boos in REGISTRY CRC s amp those IE has encountered a problem ga-ga BTW I would sureley hate to have CRC's Darn to copy all the songs x to notepad amp go out here to find another of the Darn CRC's same w hopes it is clean at a time nbsp

A:Darn CRC's

The "crc" message is always, as far as I know, due to a corruption of the file itself. In other words, the check value for the file after the copy or download does not match what is expected.

If you can copy the file from one location on the SAME drive to another location on the SAME drive and not get the error -- but the error occurs when copying to ANOTHER drive -- you may have bad blocks on that drive.

Run chkdsk on it.

Do Not Run Combofix without the supervision of a HJT team member---------------------------------------------------Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Hi, lainey58 Welcome.Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop. Double click GMER.exe. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..

Click the image to enlarge it
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ... Sections IAT/EAT Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\) Show All (don't miss this one) Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish. Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop and post its contents in your next reply.**Caution**Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I've been trying to figure out why my laptop is so slow - PC Usage goes between 4-29 percent up and down... Painstakingly I stopped process after process. When I stopped mpservic.exe, my usage went and stayed down to 2%, and my pc performed fast again.

I know mpservic.exe is for the Canon printer, but is it supposed to do this? My file is dated 1998 - is there an update or could it be corrupted? I can't keep it disabled as I have the Canon multi-pass printer - don't I need it for that?

Thanks in advance - JCorelis

Hello and welcome to Bleeping ComputerMy name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you. Please observe these rules while we work:I f you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to askPlease DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. There is no sign of an antivirus installed on your system. There are several reasons for it. Either you have disabled your antivirus or there's no antivirus installed. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it. If you have no antivirus installed, please get ONE antivirus and install it. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.avast! 4 Home EditionAntiVir Free Edition1 - Download and Run ComboFixDownload ComboFix from one of these locations:Link 1Link 2Link 3Here you can find a tutorial about Combofix: HOW TO USE COMBOFIXIMPORTANT: combofix.exe MUST be on your Desktop for us to proceed. Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.NOTE: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.2 - Run HijackthisClick on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad 3 - Status CheckPlease reply with 1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt) 2. a fresh HijackThis logThanks peku006

As a newbie to this site I hope I'm not placing this in a forum where it doesn't belong My difficulty is Darn That Mouse! not due to malware viruses or any such thing I've recently installed Win for the first time and after tweaking it's been doing fine However the wireless Logitech mouse that I used on my old XP system is now somewhat unstable Simply put it works but doesn't scroll side-to-side or up-and-down without occasionally hesitating then jumping forward I've searched high and low for a simple solution and have tried a couple of fixes folks suggested that made no difference i e changing the mouse scroll from to lines This is far from a major calamity to be sure but it IS exasperating Since I went ahead and ran DDS I'm posting the log per the instructions If there's something that can be adjusted to create a more cooperative mouse I'd be grateful if you'd identify it As well the log correctly notes that several Windows security updates failed to install Perhaps that can be addressed as well In any event I sincerely appreciate any efforts made on my behalf My thanks in advance Richard As there are no That Darn Mouse! malware or virus issues the DDS log has been removed so you can receive assistance in a more appropriate forum OB

A:That Darn Mouse!

How many lines do you scroll usually? Does it do it in all browsers? Adjust scroll wheel to 3 lines and turn vertical down to 1. I know browser have a mouse setting in tools and advanced to smooth out scrolling. You coudl try toggling those. Throw in some fresh batteries, maybe put the mouse dongle on a different usb port.

Welcome to TSF.

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\jfzzgbi.exe
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates1.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Web Rebates

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0000607D-D204-42C7-8E46-216055BF9918} - C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\jfzzgbi.exe
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\
C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll

Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it's clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section and use the tools provided.

Hmmmmm....odd infection. May take a few runs at it.......

=========

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

You should clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Download prefetch.bat and double click on it to run it.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

hello,
i work at a school and some of the students have gotten into my laptop its running XP.
the mouse works, but the double clicking of a desktop icon pops up the properties screen instead of running or opening the

icon.
click on a quick launch icon (bottom left) brings up the properties again.
the keyboard does NOT type in anything. instead the 'f' and 'h' key are either arrow left/right or arrow up/down.
as you can see, this is a mega problem and i can't figure it out at all, any ideas of what they did or how to get things

back? (would prefer to NOT do a system restore point)

i have just bought a WINFAST 760GXK8MC motherboard and a 2600 AMD Sempron Processor. I attached everything..i.e my 512MB DDR400 MEMORY AND MY HARD DRIVE...CPU, FAN, NVIDIA GEFORCE 2 MX100/200 GRAPHICS CARD AND AWAY I WENT...AND NOTHING.

by nothing i mean no signal to the monitor and the keyboard not being read...therefore i don`t know if the damn thing is booting up or not! I removed the card and attached the monitor to the AGP slot on the motherboard and still nothing.

A:I can't seem to fi this darn computer

Is this a new HD?? IS there an active partition on the drive? Does the bios see the hard drive? You should be able to set CDROM as your first boot device in the bios...boot to the XP CD and run the install process and format the drive for the OS. You can get bootdisks for most OS's over at www.bootdisk.com

Ok everytime i run my webroot spy sweeper i get a virus called "troj\virtum-gen" and an adware called "virtumonde". What should i do???? PLEASE HELP!!!

A:I Got A Darn Virus And I Need Help......

What OS (Win XP/2000, etc) are you using? What type of anti-virus are you using? Have you tried doing your scans in "SAFE MODE"? Are you doing scans while logged into the "Administrator Account" or an "account with administrator privileges"? Please follow the the instructions for using Vundofix in BC's self-help tutorial: "How To Remove Vundo/Winfixer Infection".Then download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware FreeDouble-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation. An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program. If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)Under "General and Startup", make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.Click the Scanning Control tab.Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):Close browsers before scanning.Scan for tracking cookies.Terminate memory threats before quarantining.Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.Do not run a scan just yet.Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer. On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive. On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally. To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.Click Close to exit the program.

Hi minnie, first I am moving this to our Am I Infected forum from XP.Now reboot into Safe Mode with Netwoking: How to enter safe mode(XP)Using the F8 MethodRestart your computer. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. Select the option for Safe Mode with Netwoking using the arrow keys. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode. >>>> Download this file and doubleclick on it to run it. Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next replyDo not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again. Or if rebooting is required run it again. Now run SAS:Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home UsersDouble-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation. An icon will be created on your desktop. Hi, ?Download AboutBuster. Unzip AboutBuster in an own folder such as C:\AboutBuster. Start AboutBuster.exe. Click OK, Update, Check For Update and download the updates if present. ? OS - Windows 7 x64 OEM
? The original OS that was installed on this system was Vista x84 (I did reformat the drive before installing 7 though, so I didnt use the update utility)
? The MotherBoard and RAM on this system are about 4 years old, the gfx card and the CPU are pretty new (less then a year old).

? CPU - Intel Q9400 Quad Core, I OC'ed it to 3.2GHz (I did try to revert the OC to see if thats the problem, but the BSOD was happening anyways)
? Video Card - Gigabyte, Nvidia 460GTX OC 1gb
? MotherBoard - Gigabyte S-Series EP43-DS3L
? Power Supply - SeaSonic SS-600ET 600W

I also attached the Error report by Windows as "BSOD Error".

Thanks in advance for any type of help, I would be glad to get rid of this nonsense as soon as possible :D

A:Darn BSODs!

Hello,

First I would like to start with a few troubleshooting steps to see if we can narrow down the problem.

Please Uninstall Daemon Tools Pro. Uninstallation of DAEMON Tools Pro | DAEMON Pro Help

Uninstall AVG using the removal tool. AVG | Download tools and utilities

Install Microsoft Security Essentials for testing

Make sure you are using the latest Chipset and network drivers from the motherboard manufacturer site. GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-EP43-DS3L (rev. 1.0)

Make sure that you are using the latest software for your Razer mouse. Razer Support

I have a Dell Dimension 200MMX, with 128MB of DRAM. I have an AT Port PS/2 MS Wheel Mouse, whic is installed with the Intellimouse 2.2 software, and periodically the mouse cursor disappears, and the computer freezes up.

It happens while I'm Browsing in MS IE 5.5, it did in 5.0, it happens in WordPerfect 2000, and in MS Word 2000. It isn't an everyday occurrance, perhaps it happens once or twice a week.

It happens with the system Tray empty, and with it full od programs.

I have struggled with this for a year. MS is no help!

Jim

A:Darn slow 'puter - HELP !!

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.sfx.exe and run it. Uncompress the file and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Go to Start->Run and type in cmd and hit OK. Then type in all the following (hit enter after each line):

sc stop netsvcs
sc delete netsvcs
sc stop secure32
sc delete secure32
sc stop spoolnt
sc delete spoolnt

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank

Okay, I'm an idiot. I've run SpyDoctor, AdAware, & SpyBlaster. Still getting 9 zillion pop ups whether I'm logged onto the I-net or not. Downloaded & Ran HiJack this (saw that was suggested on many other posts) but I have no idea how to get a copy of the log over here so you guys can tell me what I can and can't delete - Lord knows I'm not going to try that one myself. Please help. Oh, I've got Windows XP Home Ed. I've also got that Google toolbar active that's supposed to stop pop ups.....not working as well as I had hoped! Thanks

Have you checked the Mouse settings to make sure that the Double click speed hasn't gotten set to high somehow?

I followed Brink's tutorial to remove shortcut arrows with Win 7 64bit RC, and it worked great. Since RC expired, I loaded my new OEM version of Win 7 64bit Ultimate from New Egg and followed the tutorial and I'm having issues. What happens is, instead of removing the arrow, it places the default "no clue file" on top of the icon. What I mean by "no clue file" is, say you download a .pdf and dont have Adobe Reader, it gives a generic icon. The funny thing is it shows the real icon but with the generic one ontop. Just in case it matters, when I right click the blank icon it does not give me the block option. Please help. I despise the arrows!
Thanks,
Beebe

A:Darn Shortcut Arrows.

Hello Beebe,

Try the tutorial step by step again double checking to see if a mistake may have been made somewhere. It should work for you.

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. We start with the oldest logs first. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.

Hi, welcome to the BC Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to help you with your malware issues. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is cleanPlease do not run any scans or fixes without my direction. Finally, stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clear' post.1) exeHelperPlease download exeHelper to your desktop.Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)2) DDSPlease download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt Attach.txtSave both reports to your desktop.3) RRPlease download RootRepeal.zip. Save it to your Desktop. Alternate download links here or here. Please print these instructions, you will not have an Internet connection! If you have a 3rd party "unzipping" program...use it to open the zipped file...then skip to Step 5. Otherwise...Right click on RootRepeal.zip and select "Extract All"....Click Next on the "Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard."Click on the Browse...button, then click on Desktop, then click OK.Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish. Before running RootRepeal:Disconnect from the Internet as your system will be unprotected while using this tool.
Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.Open the RootRepeal folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it. When the program opens, click the Report tab at the bottom, then click the Scan button. In the Select Scan, dialog which asks What do you want to include in the scan?, check ALL the boxes.
Click OK.In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select all drives showing, then click OK.
The scan can take some time to finish. Do not use the computer while the scan is running.
When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window.Click on the Save Report button and save it as "rootrepeal.txt" to your desktop.Close and exit RootRepealDouble-click on the file rootrepeal.txt... Notepad will open... copy/paste the file contents in your next reply.Make sure to enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you disabled.Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "safe mode".4) What You Will Need To Post:exeHelper logDDS logsRR log

If you have vundofix, remove it and get the current version

Please download http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 to C:\
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please let Vundo finish its thing, sometimes it can take multiple passes
====================
Download Superantispyware (SAS)

http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
Click close and close again to exit the program.
Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

In my last series of posts I had asked a question about a particular file that did not go away when I was instructed to delete all temp files. That file is still there and after researching the net, I found out this is a trojan. The file is "Perfdata_548.dat". This is a nasty since it loads on start-up, changes its number(_641;_560;ect) then deletes itself on shut down so you cannot delete it in safe mode. I have tried all the methods prescribed here, in this group, to get rid of it and it won't go away. I have also searched the registry and found it there in several places but I am always terrified of deleting any registry entries until I get the word it is ok to do so from the experts. Please advise.

My PC keeps using the page file (like 250 megs of it) even when there is over 200 megs of "real ram" free. This sucks for games and really bums down your FPS.

So I went into properties and changed my page file smaller but it still showed up the same usage. So I turned it off alltogether... Still shows usage!!! THis is very annoying... Anyone?

-Tim

A:Darn Page File!!!

I would not turn off the page file. Some programs check to see that there is a page file and will not run if there is not one. As to the page file affecting fps, I do not think that is your problem. Post your system specs as to vid card, amount of ram, processor speed, mb used, etc.

Hello,

I just fixed my computer with HJT and some other programs to remove spyware, etc. Since then, I have noticed that the pages are down loading slooowly. *Yawn*

I suspect that it is my firewall causing it?? I use Zone Alarm. Could this be doing it? If so, how can I fix it?

Promising not to be a chronic complainer,
Joy

A:Pages Load So Darn Slowwwwww

It might be zone alarm but i dn wanna give u false hope. However, i advise u to remove zone alarm from add/remove program from the cntrl panel and reboot your system.

No harm doing that and after which check the boot up duration.

Here, i am not sure weather it is the bootup that u are saying slow or opening application browser etc....

For bootup, u can check your startup by going to START > RUN , type in msconfig and look at the startupp tab and see if your messenger or any other application that YOU KNOW has been chosen to start up while booting. You can deselect this by going to the APPLICATION options and uncheck the box in startup while booting. This will recover your bootup speed fast.

For opening up application browser, might wanna take a look at Ctrl Alt Del to check the process under CPU tab to see which application takes up the resources or is working behind the OS.

Try the first and 2nd step and if it dosen improves, get back here.........

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR

Every time I revisit this XP PC my fondness for WiN7 grows.

This time I cannot see any flash drives.

When I go into Disk Management etc you can see the usb flash drive sitting there without a letter assigned.
Allocating a letter doesn't make it appear in 'my computer' but it gives me the ability to right-click & open the flashdrive to add or copy a file/folder.

A:Darn System Clock >> Won't stay set..

Welcome to TSG....

Shut-down computer, remove enclosure and then remove the CMOS battery and take it to WalMart and purchase a new one of the same number and insert the new one back into the battery holder, re-assemble the computer turn it on then reset BIOS and the time and reboot and you should be done....

Just installed Opera6 on Win XP. It will not "automatically dial a connection" on startup as it does in Win98.

Anyone know how to get it to do so? Not the biggest deal, since I can independently establish a connection first, but just seems like it ought to be able to do this on its own in XP as in 98.

I installed the Preview on two computers and everything seemed to work well (very well in the case of my old laptop...) and was getting used to the new workflow when I discovered my printer won't print. It's a cheapie Samsung laser printer. I tried both computers, three different drivers (Windows, and two from Samsung) and everything looks great till I go to print. Even a Test Page generates an error. It's really a showstopper for me as I need a printer. I don't think I'm missing some setting, but anyone have any ideas? There must be a place to submit the issue to MS and maybe they can tweak the driver, if that's what it takes.

A:Darn, my printer doesn't work

It's Samsung who will update the drivers , not MS, are you using the Windows 7 drivers ? Check in Device Manager, your USB drivers are probably not install, you have to download the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer

A:Spiraling Into an Eventual Dooms Day: Darn those Trogans

I wont give you crap about using ComboFix - I think you understand it can toast the computer Let's start here:Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. -- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
