scripting in Mozilla Firefox to get updates in Bookmarks?

Q: scripting in Mozilla Firefox to get updates in Bookmarks?

Hi,

I have many computers in my test network using Mozilla Firefox - some computers load Windows and others Linux varieties.

I have these computers using the same centralized Bookmarks file, v.g. Bookmarks.html, for which the most up-to-date version will always be deposited on a common public FTP site in the network.

Does Firefox offer any scripting facility for me to write a routine that will check for latest updates on the Bookmarks file (simply checking time stamp difference), and if found, make a call to the Bookmarks-Import routine in Firefox ?

Thnx

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Specifically for that, I'm not certain, but you could try foxmarks:

Though I am not certain that will server your purposes. You could also try looking on add ons> extensions, and maybe search "bookmarks"

A:Mozilla Firefox Bookmarks?

Hello,You will need to change your folder view to show hidden files and folders. This can be done by clicking My Computer-->Tools-->Folder Options-->View-->tick the option next to Show Hidden files and folders. Then, find this folder:C:\Documents and Settings\Account\ApplicationData\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9theoxlg.default\bookmarkbackupsWhere it says Account in the example, this will be the name of your user account. The path to your bookmarks may differ a bit, but it should be very close to the example above. You may need to be the administrator, or have administrators access to view this folder, as it contains important data related to your Firefox settings. Also, it is a good idea to Hide your files and folders when you are done. One more thing, if you look in All Programs under the Start menu, find the listing for Mozilla Firefox. There should be two options: Mozilla Firefox, and Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). The Safe Mode option is generally supposed to be Firefox without Custom settings, and if you have a shortcut that you launch Firefox from that was made from this Safe Mode option, then you very well could be launching Firefox without your settings.Hope this helps, nos

Hello,

I recently upgraded my computers hard drive. I put a fresh copy of XP Pro on the new hard drive and hooked up my old drive as a slave to copy my important files over. However, when I went to get my bookmarks from firefox I can't find them. They are very important to me but they aren't stored like IE. I need to import my bookmarks and links from the old copy of mozilla on my old hard drive. How do I do this?

Thanks for looking.

A:Mozilla Firefox 4 bookmarks disappear

If you are just referring to the bookmark bar under your address bar, you can right click right above your address bar in a blank spot and there is the option to choose the bookmark bar. Check it off and it should appear. Hope this helps

Edit: You can always try re-importing the bookmarks again from IE and see if that works.

Hi - How do I transfer Firefox over to Vista and keep my bookmarks? Thanks - TM

A:Mozilla Firefox bookmarks transfer to Vista?

Easiest way (There may be better) is to go to the Program Files - Mozilla Firefox - defaults - Profile.
Copy the file and paste the file "bookmarks html" over to Vista, to the same path, but also to Users - username - Appdata - Roaming - mozilla - Profiles, and the first folder under profiles
Another way is to click "Bookmarks" on the menu, then organise bookmarks. Then under "File" on the menu, you will find an import option. You can then select "From File" and follow the same path as above.

Hello all Since the latest update to Mozilla Firefox I've been having an issue with my bookmarks toolbar the bookmarks and separators keep rearranging themselves at seemingly random times The way they rearrange themselves however seems less random either the separators move themselves all the way to the left earlier this week or they and the bookmark icons rearrange themselves into a specific pattern that I had never chosen Even after I quot re-rearrange quot them back to where I want them manually they would just do the same after a few hours I tried everything I could think of up to and including deleting the localstore rdf file but nothing seemed to resolve the issue The issue happens on all five of our machines three of which Dell Latitude E Toshiba Satellite U and Toshiba Tecra R are running Windows Pro -bit one IBM ThinkPad T running Pro -bit and one Getac B running Vista Business -bit All Firefox browsers on these machines are synced to the same account What do you think TIA Shady

A:Mozilla Firefox - bookmarks toolbar rearranges itself!

Not a solution, just a comment: A quick search on mozillaZine indicates that this is known to be caused by sync. I only looked at a few pages turned up by using the search function, so it is possible that a solution may be found somewhere on mozillaZine.

Hi,if you are using Firefox3, it is no longer storing the bookmarks in the html file. This only remains for compatibility with previous versions. So it would have been empty even before you lost your bookmarks.Have a look at Bookmarks -> manage bookmarks ->import and backups->restore you should find backups from the last couple of days, that firefox made automatically. For further information please have a look at the article about lost bookmarks from mozilla: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarksregards _temp_

I constantly get notices to update my version of Firefox to 2.0.0.6 version but every time it tries to, it says it has failed because it could not change a certain file. Should I just uninstall the whole program and reinstall it? Should I CCleaner my system and see if that works? Has anyone else been having this problem?

A:Mozilla Firefox Updates: Not Working?

Do you remember what file it was that could not be changed?
I would uninstall and then reinstall Ff before I would even think of touching the registry, since a careless mistake in the registry could cause serious harm to your operating system, let alone Firefox.

Stops serving updates to newest versions while it looks into startup crash bug

Mozilla has stopped providing security updates to Firefox users as it investigates a bug that caused computers to crash last week. Computerworld blogger Michael Horowitz first reported on the problem last Sunday after he tried to update older editions of Firefox on several different machines.
When Horowitz asked Firefox 3.5.11, 3.6.3 and 3.6.8 if there was an update, the browsers told him no newer editions were available. Firefox's up-to-date versions are 3.5.12 and 3.6.9, which Mozilla released a week ago when it patched 15 vulnerabilities, 11 of them labeled "critical."

This year, all three major browsers – Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox -  were successfully exploited by security experts. As far as Firefox goes, security firm VUPEN managed to exploit the browser using a “user-after-free” memory flaw that it combined with an ASLR/DEP memory exploit. Both ASLR and DEP are part of the Windows operating system that help protect the system’s memory against exploits.

If you are a user of Firefox you may have noticed that a new version is available already, bringing the version of Firefox on the stable channel to 19.0.2 The patch is a direct result of the Pwn2own exploit that was used by Vupen to exploit the Firefox web browser on Windows.

Do you have the bookmarks in internet explorer or saved in a .html file? Try opening firefox then going to bookmarks -> organize bookmarks -> import. Then choose either Internet Explorer or "From File" depending on where the bookmarks are saved. Then when you're done you can either export them to a .html file or leave them in firefox.

The bookmarks file with the Firefox logo is the file you're looking for. It has the Firefox logo because html files are associated with your default browser, Firefox.

Instead of opening it, open Firefox and go to Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks. This will open the Library window. Click the Import & Backup button, select 'Import HTML' and navigate to the file on your old hard drive. This will import the bookmarks back into Firefox.

Your bookmarks and other preferences are stored in a separate and independent location/file on your disk, so you should be able to delete and reinstall Ff without needing to do a special save for them. See if the information linked to below does not, however, answer your question:http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing%20up%20and%20restoring%20bookmarks

I'm using mac OS 10.5. I am trying to reinstall a clean version of firefox which is not a problem but I can't figure out how to get my old bookmarks back in. The browser has a function to import bookmarks from Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera but not previous bookmarks from firefox. I've tried to replace the bookmarks.html file in the application support folder, but it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to doe this?

A:reinstalling firefox and importing previous firefox bookmarks

I don't know the differences between firefox for windows and mac, but in windows you would click on bookmarks - then click on organize bookmarks, you can import your html file there.

Firefox has been freezing up on me, and when I close it down, I get a bluescreen error. It also happens a lot of the time when I close Firefox down normally. This was happening before I updated to the latest version of FF. I am running Windows XP, and have recently started using ZoneAlarm and Avast on my system.

A:Firefox closes = bluescreen error? (Moved for the mozilla/Firefox Forum)

Hi,

Can you give us the error in full that you are getting. Also, I would check and make sure that ZoneAlarm and Avast are allowing FF to connect to the internet.

Cheers!

I don't know if my problem is Firefox or WordPress but I thought I'd try here first.
I use WordPress to publish articles and usually copy and paste from the finished article in the Articles forum to WordPress but since I reinstalled Win 7 this no longer works as paste is no longer an option when I right click in WordPress, or at least in the particular part that I need it to. I can, however, do it in Internet Explorer, but images aren't copied over, which they used to be. I've tried all the usual things like clearing the cache, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Is this Win 7 or Firefox at fault? Moved from Mozilla/Firefox browsers

Hi,
I am using Win-7 too but I haven't used IE. So my suggestion is to, try another browser for the same purpose and then see the effects (I feel firefox is well suited for the purpose). If you are getting same problems then, you are missing with some features of Win-7 otherwise, it is the website issue.

Hi Guys

I am new to this forum and have limited knowledge of computers.
I was using Firefox version 2 and was very happy until I was requested to download version 3. Now I seem to have endless crashes and keep getting told Firefox has a problem & needs to close. Up to 5 x a day.

This is very frustrating.
This happens with avg, facebook ,all internet functions.

I have spybot running and avg and says there are no problems.

We had a power failure earlier yesterday and when I switched back on Microsoft suggested I check the C drive as there was a problem -but that seems to have sorted itself out.-probably due to not closing down properly.

So can you help me with detailed instructions on how to fix forefox or totally remove it and install from the beginning or is there major problems with that version 3 .1 ?

Thanks
Carol

I build a new computer not too long ago and in doing so I forgot to save all of my book marks in firefox. I still have my old HD in my new computer with a new HD as well. I have not really touched the old drive except to move things from it to the new one( it is starting to go bad). Anyway, I have installed firefox on my new computer but I need some of the bookmarks from the older HD. Anyone know how I can go and get the old ones and save them to new HD? Thanks for the help.

A:Getting Bookmarks From Another Hd (firefox)

You can get the bookmarks from your old Firefox profile folder. This is a hidden file, so you'll have to set windows to show hidden files:How to see hidden files in Windows Then navigate to:C:\ Documents and Settings \ user name \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Firefox \ Profiles \ default.7dp \ Bookmark.htmlEither copy, or move that file, to the same location on your new harddrive, replacing the one that's there.

Firefox does not use a folder for bookmarks, it uses a SQLite database file places.sqlite.You should backup/restore from Firefox menu : Bookmarks -> Organize Boormarks ->Import/Export bookmarks. You can also use Mozilla Backup tool for creating backup of all Firefox settings.

I can not seem to add New Bookmarks to firefox. All my existing bookmarks are still there and work fine, however when I go to bookmark this page, I just get a blank edit this bookmark dialog box.

I've tried manually enter bookmarks by just pasting the url and giving it a name. This does add it, however when you click on it, nothing happens, and when I go to the properties, it opens a glitched properties window, where only the top of the window appears.

I see people on the firefox forums were directly to this link:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_..._places.sqlite

I'm not sure what steps I should try first so that I don't lose all my bookmarks. I can make a backup, but I guess it will just be glitched like how it is now, so I'm not sure what to do, to save my book marks.

Firefox did an update yesterday for me and now I notice when I hit 'Bookmarks' the first option is 'Show All Bookmarks' while the second is 'Bookmark this page'. Has anyone noticed this?? They've gone and swapped them around.. Why would anyone want 'Show All Bookmarks' as their first option?? Are some people out there having trouble locating a page they bookmarked only a week ago?? Also when I hit 'Tools' what shows up right down the bottom is a tab dedictaed to Adblock plus (an addon) instead of 'Options' which has now been pushed up one. Again... Why?? Too hard for some to find their addons and configure Adblock from there?? Stick it right where Options used to be so THEY-CANT-MISS-IT?! I dont mind Firefox updates addressing security issues (they have to for their own sake) but leave my tabs alone!!

What version of Firefox are you running? In version 11, there are several ways to access your bookmarks. Personally, I prefer to add a bookmarks toolbar to the toolbar area of Firefox and add folders for different bookmark categories:

Another way is to add a bookmarks button to your toolbar. This opens up your bookmarks in a sidebar:

And, finally, there is the keyboard shortcut, CTRL+SHIFT+B.

You can just copy the bookmarks.html file from the old install.

The default location is:

Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\[B][I]username[/I][/B]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[B][I]profilename[/I][/B]
where profilename is something cryptic like pzkq334e.default

On Windows they are stored on:
/Application Data/Mozilla/firefox/Profiles/default.#*$!/bookmarks.html
It also has a backup on the same folder as bookmarks.bak

If you have a bookmarks.bak file, copy it, rename the copy to bookmarks.html and you're set. Don't do that while FF is running.
I have not had such an experience, but I am backing up my bookmarks file once in a while. Seems like a good idea.

This has got me stumped. In xp I had a program set to regularly backup my firefox profiles folder. The most important file in this folder was (and still is) bookmarks.html.

Since I moved to windows 7 I've had the following small problem (to save anybody wasting time telling me things I already know, I am aware of exporting bookmarks from the bookmarks menu, and I also know about mozbackup, but I like the mozilla profile backup to run along with all my other automated backups).

I have googled all over the place about this, and I know that bookmarks.html is meant to be in

C:\Users\ME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\"random_numbered_folder".default, but it is not.

There is an out of date bookmarks html folder in there (the entries are not what I currently have in firefox bookmarks). It's obviously not where firefox is getting the bookmarks from, as I shut down firefox, moved the file to desktop so that there was no bookmarks.html in the profiles folder, and restarted firefox.

When I restarted firefox all my bookmarks were there exactly as they should be.

I've searched the C drive to death but I cannot find out where the current bookmarks.html is.

Can anyone shed some light on this.

Many thanks for any replies.

Bookmarks are stored in:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XXXXXXXX\places.sqlite

In the same folder, you will see a bookmarkbackups folder. Inside there, you will see backups of your bookmarks that can be imported back into firefox.

The .json file with the most recent date is your current bookmark backup file.

The bookmarks.html file doesn't store bookmarks itself and never has, so if you were backing that up, you weren't getting anything. The contents of bookmarks.html are shown below for reference:

A:Importing Firefox Bookmarks Into Ie

Yes, you can export your bookmarks in FF and then import them into IE. I assume you're using a recent edition of FF and IE. First you need to export them from Firefox. You do this by going to bookmarks>organize bookmarks. Then under the file menu select export, then choose the format (HTTP) and location for saving the file. In IE, click the add bookmark button and go to import and follow the directions. I'm using IE 7 with Vista so the proper buttons and location of the command may be a bit different.

A:My Firefox Bookmarks Poof Gone!

Downloading helper applications without thoroughly researching them first may have been the cause of your problem. Fortunately, Mozilla's Firefox stored your bookmarks in a file separate from the actual browser, so these may be retrievable. First, just to check, click on bookmarks and then manage bookmarks; make sure nothing shows.

Then try this:

File/Import/- - -this will bring up the import wizard. Choose "Netscape 6,7, or Mozilla 1x" as the option. Using the wizard to import pre-existing bookmarks may solve your problem quickly. If this does not work, then reply with your version of Windows so we can direct you to the appropriate file.

 Good luck.

I am running Vista and using Firefox. I had to reinstall Firefox because of hanging issues with webpages. When I got back up and running in Firefox I noticed all my bookmarks had disappeared. Fortunately I was able to import them from Internet Explorer but noticed that when it was completed all the bookmarks were in a long list. Previously I had them grouped in folders. How can I save bookmarks in the future where they stay in their correct folders so when I import or export they are where they should be?

Finally tried Firefox, LOVE it -

One question about bookmarks
(there's always SOMETHING isn't there ?

In Netscape I had been able to move bookmarks to a specific
location in the list, such as positioning frequently used bookmarks
near the top of the list.

In Netscape it was easy - just Manage Bookmarks,
click and hold and move - basically drag and drop

Is that possible in FireFox?
If so, how?

I can't seem to figure that one out.

FF doesn't seem to have this feature

Thanks for any info!!

A:Managing Bookmarks in Firefox

It`s very easy.

Just left click and hold down the mouse button and drag the entry to wherever you want it on the bookmarks list and let go of the mouse button.

A:importing firefox bookmarks to IE?

You'll first need to see where your firefox bookmark file is located - bookmark.html

Open up explorer/ click Folders at top.
In left side click on following once each time to open the folders successively;
Documents and Settings
Your profile name
Application Data
Mozilla
Firefox
Profiles
Default
Bookmarks

Make a note of this directory then open up Internet Explorer -
Click on 'File' at top of browser window in left top corner- and
select Import and Export at the bottom of list
Open up import wizard and click 'next'
Click on import favourites-follow the 'nexts' up to directory location.
Click on Browse and use the directory you went through above to point directly to the Firefox bookmark html file that you will click on. Select it and you import it like that.

I finally got tired of all of those JavaScript errors popping up in Firefox and started looking for solutions I installed the newest Java update and used JavaRa to get rid of the old versions After that Firefox would not start at all I assumed it had to do with the newest and Firefox profile bookmarks New update - there's a lot of quot Firefox not responsive quot and quot Firefox sucks quot stuff out there re the most recent update - and Safe Mode would not open either I uninstalled it and installed the previous version but now I guess it was a problem with my profile because that version wouldn't open either it appeared in the task manager processes but would not actually open I created a new default profile and was able to open it and surf the net but my bookmarks were gone since it was a new profile I copied my bookmarks html file into the new profile and the places file which has the live bookmarks but for some reason one entire large subfolder of bookmarks is missing When I opened the bookmarks file from the current profile in the browser the files are not there but New Firefox profile and bookmarks when I drag New Firefox profile and bookmarks and drop the file from the old profile and did a text search for some of the links that I could not see under quot organize bookmarks quot and they seem to still be there but for some reason the folder and its several subfolders - sometimes I use the quot bookmark all tabs quot function so it creates a subfolder with the bookmarks will not display Some of the stuff is unimportant - just what I happened to be looking at at the time and either didn't close a tab before I decided to exit or I thought I might want to read it again or more of it later - but there are also some links for project stuff I'm one of those people who might have like tabs open - some work some news facebook email maybe a YouTube window for something I'm listening to or a tab with a Netflix streaming thing playing so its all kind of mixed up I tried copying every file from my old profile and replacing the new profile files but Firefox would not open again so I guess it is some other thing got corrupted in the old profile so I did the whole Create New Profile and dropped my bookmarks and places files into the new profile Livebookmarks had to be copied from the quot Bookmarks Toolbar Folder quot to the quot Bookmarks Toolbar quot to display and the bookmarks were back but that large folder was still missing even though It is there in the old bookmarks html file but when I drop it into the new profile or use the import html function the folder disappears I'm thinking about downloading the newest Firefox if it is not the update that caused problems and I'm hoping that by some miracle importing the bookmarks from the old profile will magically result in all of my bookmarks being restored but before I do this I'm wondering if anyone here has any suggestions
