I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

About a month ago I found my computer tower was still on but the screen was black and the green power light on the tower had turned amber The light wasn t blinking it was steady I had to hold the power button down to get it to shut down and restart It happened yesterday again when I hadn t been near it for awhile and that time and the time before I had FF up with stuff to look at later so I thought it was going into standby mode or something except that it happened again about minutes ago while I was using it No odd noises before the light changes color either Although I have heard a couple odd noises that might be coming from the tower in the last little while It sort of sounds 'on' power tuns light Tower amber? but still like a phone set to ring on pulse but it is pretty quite and two quick rings of two pulses about minutes apart It seems to be fine after restarting Preliminary ideas as to what could be causing this I ve done some basic research and have read that it could be the power supply I will also say that each time it has happened the computer has been on for over hours before hand It is a dell can t mind model right now and is running Windows XP home nbsp

hi, I am going to upgrade my graphic card to ATI 5770 so I need a new power supply which has power about 550--600 watt. But the most frustrating problem is that I failed to find a proper power supply with the correct dimension.
I have an HP pavilion e9300 which uses a very wired power supply tower-150mm(W) 86(H) 140(D). But so far all the PSUs I found is the standard size --150mm(W) 86(H) 150(D) which cannot fit in my setup.

So could any PC God give me some suggestion, please??
Is any PSU with the size of my tower or can I just simply install a bigger PSU which can still successfully power up the comptuer?

Thx in adance.

A:Power supply bigger than the tower - frustrated by HP PSU tower

If the power supply will physically fit your case, it should work fine with your computer. Will the extra 10mm interfere internally with anything inside the PC?

Maybe the Blue LED is dead. Is your HP still covered by a warranty? You can take it to the repair shop and ask them to fix it.

So what can I do with it I m trying to free up space on it so that I can use it as a backup storage device for my laptop Can I delete all of the previous OS files off it It ran vista I am also not sure of where to find the files since I really never got a chance to explore Vista before I got a new computer with Also it s partitioned I ve got the primary which is GB and a GB quot Factory Image Drive quot which has recovery files in it from the old PC Can I clear that out I ve already put a backup of my new computer on the old hard drive so I m running out of space I ve got GB free I was thinking of getting rid of the last backup to make room for the new but I m not sure I want to clear out my only backup right before I do a new one So my main questions are what can I do with this external drive what can I delete how can I optimize the extra space I have with this thing Thanks in advance nbsp

A:Internal drive from tower turned external...

I'd copy all the data that you want to keep off the drive then delete all the partitions off it and reformat it as a single partition. You can delete the partitions using Disk Management, to open it right click on Computer and select Manager or type DISKMGMT.MSC in the search/run box. Then right click on the external drive and choose Delete Volume until all the partitions are gone then choose Create Volume. Once you create and format the new partition,m copy the data you want to backup onto the drive.

First, I must say that I dusted this particular tower with compressed air. I had a little trouble getting the side panel off, and jostled it a little bit.

Anyway, I tried to turn it on this morning and the top light indicator flashes green once, then starts slooowly flashing dark red. I can count to 3ish in between flashes. The bottom light indicator also flashes faintly red.

I should probably add that this has happened before... I just figured I didn't push the power button correctly. Flipping the power strip on and off and trying again resolved always resolved it.

I bought it second hand but it has a sticker with some numbers on the top:

HP compaq
D3|vm|p24|40|k|256cr us
product # DL324A#ABA
SIN: mxd31904pj

A:Flashing red light when trying to turn on tower?

The flashing LED is an error indicator. The error is identified by the number of flashes:

LED and beep condition Description Power button LED blinks
4 times with 4 beeps Power Supply Power button LED blinks
5 times with 5 beeps Memory Power button LED blinks
6 times with 6 beeps Video Card or Graphics Power button LED blinks
7 times with 7 beeps Motherboard or System Board failure Power button LED blinks
8 times with 8 beeps BIOS or CMOS problem (ROM)
Having said that, if removing/restoring power to the PC resolves the problem, that typically indicates a faulty power supply.

Hi.
My computer when I'd turn it on used to be a green light, but lately it's blinking very slowly and is a dull orange colour. Nothing is wrong with the computer itself though. I tried changing the PSU cable to see if that would do anything, but it didn't.
My motherboard is an AMD Asus F2A55-M LK2 and my processor is an AMD A4-5300 if that helps any.
I tried to Google the problem, but all I got up was info for a Dell PC and mine is custom built.
Does anyone have any ideas?

A:Windows XP, power light, hdd light for 1 sec, black screen

oh, also, i did try and search and most I found were a black screen after the self test or the windows logo, not right away.

also, dont think it matters, but when the lights go out, it is at the point where hitting the power button again, the computer instantly turns off.

also, just checked, and its nothing to do with the lcd. I just hooked up my monitor, and my monitor tells me when there is no signal, and it just stayed black, then when it was unplugged from the laptop that is when it said no signal.

Hi,
Got a strange problem. A few days ago I noticed that after powering down my desktop PC, the CPU fan and HD started running again after 15-30 seconds or so. Neither were running at full speed, more like half speed. The system power light was on (green) and the HD power light was also on, but flickering. When I powered the PC back up, everything worked normally. I've been running this PC for several years without this problem, now it happens every time I shut it down. The only way I can turn the HD and CPU fan off is by unplugging the PC. I suspect that either the Antec power supply or the mother board is going bad, but I don't have any extras to test with. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of problem.

Hardware Info:
Gigabyte 8I-RXP
Antec 350W power supply

Thanks!

A:PC Turned Off, but CPU fan and HD light On

Yes, I had a power supply that was going goofy, and the symptoms were very similar. In my case most of the PC seemed to shut down but the fans kept running and the hard drive light stayed lit with a little flickering and in my case, if I held the power button down until it was supposed to be a hard off, there was no change so I couldn't restart until fully unplugging first.

New PS solved it.

(also, every time when i turn on my computer, there are some small sizzling sound, i don't know if i has anything to do with it..)

A:PC Can't be turned on, motherboard light on

It could be that the power supply is on its way out or has died ... i had the same thing happen to me , i took the side case off and checked all the leads , i then took the power lead off the motherbard and found out that 3 prongs were burnt out and a few others were black , if this is the case its a new power supply and possably a new motherbard as well if the power connector looks burnt .

Please help. My on/off power button on the front of my tower is disconnected from my motherboard. Where exactley should I reconnect it too? So I can power up my computer. Thanks

A:no power to tower , power switch hookup

Not all motherboards are the same. To find the correct header pins you have to refer to the motherboard manual although sometimes the motherboard labels the pins clearly enough so you can figure it out. However, with the motherboard installed in the case, it could be difficult.

If you can't find your manual, try going to the motherboard's manufacturer site to download a copy of the manual (usually a pdf format). If you have a major manufacturer made PC (Dell, HP, Gateway, Emachines, etc.), you might have to try their websites. Good info from those sites might be hit or miss.

Usually, you can turn off numlock in the BIOS setup.
Watch the screen when the computer is starting for
a prompt to press a certain key to enter setup.
Press that key and enter the bios setup.
Find the setting and turn it off.
May need to check the toshiba website for instructions on how to
enter the bios setup.

I am having a problem with my Satellite A200.

When the screen is open the back-light is turned off. You can faintly see the screen it still switched on but it's too faint to read.
When you close the lid you can see the screen back-light comes on, it stays on for just under a second when you re-open the lid but then turns off again.

I guess that it has something to do with the lid switch being faulty.
Can anyone suggest any solutions.

Many Thanks
Anthony

A:Satellite A200 screen back-light is turned off

This part of the message is very interesting:
>You can faintly see the screen it still switched on but it's too faint to read.

According to your description you can see the screen and possibly the desktop too but the whole display is very faint like behind a thick fog.
Could it be right?

Well, I think this issue could be related to the FL inverter malfunction.
The FL inverter is a tiny part hidden behind the screen frame and it controls the screen?s backlight.

In my opinion this part should be checked by a notebook technician.

Hello,
I got myself an ADSL connection with an ADSL router/modem (UTStarcom's UT 300 R2U) 5 days ago. On the third day of using it suddenly its "Status" LED lamp stopped blinking which it normally does and turned itself off, while all other LEDs like Power, ADSL-Link/Act, Ethernet-Link/Act stayed on. My net stopped working and I couldn't open the router's GUI configuration page or ping it. It started working normally after restarting it physically.

It's working fine ever since (touchwood) but I wonder what could have been wrong with it that day. Any ideas please? The router/modem's firmware version is R100B02.7AS.D.

Thanks.

A:ADSL router/modem's status light turned off

I am unfamiliar with your product.

Is the status light on again? If not, the LED might have burned out. If it is on again, the LED might be defective. BUT, if you lost connectivity at the same time, that explanation is unlikely accurate.

On the high speed connections with which I have familiarity, the "status" light indicates whether or not the product is working. It might not work for any of the following reasons.
1. signal from ISP is off / out;
2. signal from ISP has been interrupted by cable outage; someone cut cable; tech working on cable;
3. cable connection within your facility has a problem; loose fitting, kink in cable has broken 1 of the wires inside the cable.

Note, the list is not intended to be complete.

If this were my problem, I would contact my ISP & the cable modem manufacture's tech support division.

I hope your system stays up.

Sincerely,
RF123

Hi,
I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

My Dell Inspiron 1545 has been sitting for a while, and when I went to plug it it and try to use it, it would not turn on. All I got is a pulsing power light like when it's in sleep.
I recently replaced the battery as well as the charger, because the original battery was shot and the charger was in horrible shape. I also replaced the power jack a while back because the pins inside were bent and the laptop got no power.
I had successfully used the laptop for a while after replacing these parts, but now it won't turn on. Whether I'm on battery, AC power, or both, it only flashes/pulses when I press the power button. If I hold the power button, it will shut off.
What's wrong here? I have checked and re-seated both memory modules, also testing both slots and nothing changed.

A:Inspiron 1545 Won't Power On, Pulsing Power Light Like When In Sleep Mode

Hi CARCRAZY98,
Thank you for the update.
Well, when you power on the system, if you hear the fan spinning and the HDD turning on, connect an external monitor and check if there is any display.
Reseat the cmos battery and check when possible. Since the system draws power from the adapter, at this point, I would not suspect the adapter. Also, remove the memory modules and disconnect the HDD and check if the system comes on and beeps - indicating a missing HDD / memory.
As advised in my previous post, if nothing works and the indications do not change, I would suspect the motherboard.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Im working on Compaq something tower. Doing a favor for the mother in law. This tower is her co-workers and asked if I could look at it.

At first glance, all the internal cables and wired are firmly attached. So I direct my attention to the power source, It is equipped with a green led light (to tell its getting power I assume). This little green light is not lighting up when plugged in. Its doing nothing. Power source model is a Bestec ATX-250-12z

Any ideas or suggestions?

A:Tower not getting power?

Hi garaboldi,

This might sound daft, but I've done it before. Have you made sure that you have plugged it in and switched on at the wall socket? Is there power to the wall socket? Try with another appliance that you know is working. Does the fuse need changing in the plug, and is the wiring secure?

I just got back from being out of town; went to check my email and my computer won't turn on. Everything else is getting power just fine: printer, scanner, router, modem, keyboard, screen. The light won't even come on on the tower. I have: unplugged and replugged from tower and the wall; tried a different and known-to-work power cord; used the toggle on the back of the tower to turn on and off; held the on button in for 5-10 seconds; opened up the case and made sure everything inside is seated firmly.

Any thoughts? I'm a pretty basic user but can follow directions!

Thanks.

battery is inside "sealed" and may be difficult to access.
ran fine yesterday, shut down with 20% battery life.

if the ac plug is unplugged then i can get the led to turn off but once pushed, it ony flashes. no results

warranty is expired.
unit manufactured april 23 2015

i currently have it plugged in but no flashing light as i have not pushed the power button. im hoping that it will take a charge or correct itself with time.

what do you suggest? thank you

A:i have a lenovo edge 15 model80k9. led power light is blinking but computer will not repond. no power up . the battery is "s

Try the following...

1. Take out (or take it off) the charger.
2. Next take out the battery
3. Now hold down power button for 20 seconds and then rinsert battery.
4. Now put it on the charger again

NOTE: Make sure charger is plugged into the main power supply (not an extension cord, surge protector, etc.)

Sometimes, when the device is not plugged in directly, it doesn't get the power it needs. Holding the power button, while you restart it, clears out the temporary ram (no it won't delete anything you have saved) and will give the device access to the ram it needs.

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

Hi everyone,

My pc just shut down this morning. I had a spare power pack- brand new and I fitted that.

Windows ran perfectly for 10 minutes then the same thing happened again!

I noticed on both occasions, that even after I had removed the extenal power lead, the green power 'on' light kept on flashing on/off.

I have never noticed that before when a power pack 'blew'.

Does anyone think I was unlucky with a 'duff' replacement power pack?

Is the flashing power light indicative of some oother fault?

Any and all help welcome. PLEASE!

Many thanks.

My computer was down when I came back from lunch and could not get it to come back on.  If I hold the power button down for about 7 seconds it blinks orange but there is not noise from the fan coming on or post beep.  Also the green light on the back is not on either. All of the other equipment sharing the same power strip come on but not the desktop so it is not the power strip.  I also tried to set it up in another office on a completely different circuit and still does the same thing. What should I try next?

A:OptiPlex 790 Wont power on power light blinks amber

Which form factor, desktop, mini-tower, small form, ultra-small form?
From the (desktop) manual: Blinking amber light indicates a problem with the system board.
Are any of the 4 diagnostic LEDs on when it won't boot? ,They're on the front of the PC next to the power button. Look up error codes in the manual.
Possible power supply failure if the green light is off on the back. Can you try a different power cord? What happens if you push the power supply diagnostic button on back of PC next to that (green) power light?

But When I go to shutdown it does its usual thing but then there is no quot it is now safe to shutdown quot screen and the hard drive light is red and hangs but whenever I boot up it doesn t try to scan for errors So the system thinks it is shutting down like normal I downloaded and installed the latest Via Hyperion in drivers which my motherboard works off of and it didn t help I have the latest update for McAfee and it doesn t find any viruses nbsp

Got a store-bought Gateway SX-2800 model which is a mini-tower. Upgrading the video card, and as a result I am also upgrading the power supply.

Being a mini-tower, will it definitely need a specialized power supply, or will a standard PSU work?

If it needs a specialized PSU where do you suggest getting them and how - would I take the dimensions of my PSU and then talk to a manufacturer? Or would buying a new case along with a standard PSU be cheaper?

I left for the weekend with the computer on, but screen saver running..blah blah....I come back to the power off in my room. It seemed that there was a surge or the breaker popped. But, now that the power is back on everything in my room is fine, except the computer tower. The monitor, speakers and everything else is fine, but the tower won't turn on. I even used the same power cord for a different tower in my room and that turns on, but my computer won't. Anyone have any suggestions, I'm kind of stumped and tapped out on ideas?

As you did not mention any message or display on the screen, I would use this tutorial for a step by step diagnostic.  It also helps to remove the side panel, and visually watch the CPU and rear case fan movement(s).  As you press the power button, pay attention to the fans. Also does the Power Supply LED stay ON? Or did it go OUT when you pressed the power button?

Daughter last used laptop on battery power and ran id down completely until computer shut off. She plugged in the power cord and it would not come on when pressing the power button.  Laptop was plugged in overnight and this morning same issue - the power light just blinks five times when you press the power button. This is the same behaviour whether plugged into power or not. I've tried holding down the power button. Tried with battery removed and A/C power, but then no light comes on at all.  I've tried removing the battery and A/C power, holding the power button down for 30 seconds, then install battery and plug in A/C power, but no difference.  I tried a different A/C power adapter and no difference. Any ideas?

Not sure if i'm in the right place or not so apologies in advance.
I've just bought a new tower with Windows 7 on it and tried installing it today, it's now 12 hours later and i cannot get monitor, keyboard, mouse to work. They were working last night with the old tower. The light comes on the monitor but turns to orange and says No signal.
The buttons on the front don't wnat to work at all i have to use the one at the back and i have no clue what to do next.
I thought it would be a good idea to buy exactly what i wanted but maybe i've made a mistake and should have bought one 'all in'.
Trouble is i'd bought the accessories not too long ago and i was loathe to buy new just for the sake of it.

A:My tower Power button will not work

You could have a defective power switch on the PC case. Test this by using the reset switch as a temporary power switch. The power switch and the reset switch are the same for practical purposes except, of course, the size of the button (on most cases). If the reset switch works and is able to start the PC, then you know the power switch is defective.

Also is the power supply universal?

A:M70e Tower-memory, graphics & power supply upgrade

If you don't wish to buy memory from Lenovo, both Kingston and Crucial have 'System Specific' memory for your system that are guarranteed to work. Memory timings must be match what the BIOS expects for the system to recognize it, and generic memory often doesn't work.

Use your Hardware Maintenance Manual for instructions on how to upgrade the memory. After making any memory change, run 2 passes of MemTest86 to ensure all is well.    A few older system types (eg. some models of M58), required a BIOS update to support 4 GB modules.   I'm not familiar with the M70, but it's probably similar to the other models.   If you take the cover off and measure the existing supply, then you'll know if it is a ATX or TFX standard. )

The Mini-Tower uses a standar ATX power supply, and the SFF a standard TFX pwer supply. A power connector adapter (ATX to Lenovo) is required for M92 and forward. For the SFF, the maximum aftermarket TFX is 400w, with 350w being more common -- not a huge increase over stock. For the Mini-tower, I have had an 650w aftermarket Corsair in mine (I recommend one that is semi-modular and shorter, as space is limited inside the case.

When turning the PC on the PC on light will ight up, but when i press the button to turn it on nothing happens... I'm sure this may have an effect on it, so let me give you the history of the computer. I was installing a USB card reader, and when i plugged it in the computer shut down and shorted out (i suppose) and then it actually smelt like something was burning.. Am i screwed? or is there an easy fix to this?

A:PC gets power light to light up, but nothing

Hello there. It's definately not good when you smell something burning.

I'm assuming all you did was plug the USB connector of the card reader into a USB port on the back, correct? Your case was not open or anything?

I am venturing a guess that either there was debris in the USB port when you plugged it in, or your computer was not properly grounded, or something happened to the power supply.

Your next step would be to determine what device has failed. Turn off your computer, remove the power cord to the power supply, and open the side of the case. Carefully take a look at your motherboard. Are there any visual signs of something that got fried? If you have a second computer, you may want to use that to test each part of the fried machine: the RAM, the power supply, etc.

Let us know what your situation is in better detail!

I'm fixing my cousin's HP desktop. It was working before. But one day this happened after he turned off his pc and met his problem on the next day.

Now, whenever the pc is turned on, psu is on, cpu fan and case fan spin but they will stop spinning in a few seconds. Then only those two fans stop spinning while the psu fan is still spinning and the power button on the case is still lit. When I turn on the pc, no beeps come out and nothing shows up on the monitor. It just remains black after the cpu fan stops. And the pc doesn't restart automatically like when cpu is over-temperature.

If anyone knows what the problem, please let me know. Thanks a lot!

A:Power Supply Is On But CPU fan turned off

Hello,

Has any cables been unseated?
Perhaps the PSU is at fault..if that is ok, then the Motherboard needs diagnosing.
If the lights come on, the PSU may still be at fault.. i.e not giving sufficient power for whatever reason.

A:EMachine Has No Power When Turned On

The gods do not favour this one
When the power supply went it may have taken out the motherboard as well
It may be time to give up on this machine.
With a bit of luck you should be able to hook up the drive as a slave in another machine and recover the data from it

you can turn your motherboard on manually by getting any slim metal and then touching both power pins with the slim metal, you touch one pin from the bottom and from the top something, but if you don't want to struggle you might need to solder

I'm using Windows XP and set the monitors to switch off after 10 minutes of inactivity. This works well for a while, maybe days, then the monitors will switch back on as soon as they are turned off. This can be returned to normal by restarting the computer, but sooner or later it will happen again. Your comments welcome.

Hi,

Just wondering, is there a way so that if for example, I have a video folder that is being shared on the network, to continue being shared, even if the computer is turned off? I want to be able to share my files 24/7 but I dont want to keep the computer running all the time. Is there a way to share while in a very low power state?

Thanks
Jitin

A:Sharing with computer turned off/low power?

No, you'd have to wake the computer on a LAN event to bring it out of the low power state. Or you could purchase a Network Attached Storage appliance on your network.

Hi,

I have a problem with Toshiba Satellite M100, that i was hoping someone else may have seen before.

Pushing the power button only lights up the power button itself, and the power indicator on the front.

Nothing else happens.

No other indicator lights light up (unless A/C is connected, then the battery and a/c indicators light up), no mechanical sounds of any sort from within, no POST no nothing.

Then after 5 seconds or so, the power indicator and button lights go out.
Am I right to assume that it's not likely to be the PSU??

not sure where to start

Any ideas?

Thx,
