Windows was unable to connect to SSID

Q: Windows was unable to connect to SSID

This all started after I reset the router putting in new pass code I m using same name of the old SSID When you click to Windows SSID was to unable connect on the wireless network connection on the name of my SSID on connect it saying Getting information from SSID this sounds like Windows was unable to connect to SSID good thing that windows can see the router and talk to it Type in the network key same thing looks like windows can see the router and talk Windows was unable to connect to SSID to it I type in the network key and OK Than it is saying windows was unable to connect to SSID name I have set up other computers and it can connect but this one computer running windows cannot I have the pass code down on paper and other computers can connect So wrong pass code is not the case The only thing I can think of is is computers using the old profile or my network card may need to be reset When I open networking sharing center and click on manage wireless networks I removed the old profiles in the list But I m not sure if there is still some kind of conflict or the old setting still there some where Well because I m using the same SSID despite the router reset and new pass code I m not sure why I cannot connect unless Windows was unable to connect to SSID the windows thinks I m connecting to the old SSID I tried to restart the computer and no change nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows was unable to connect to SSID

Force the system to forget that SSD and then reboot.
Now look for it again and enter the passphrase.

Laptop or desktop?

Are there other SSIDs that you can connect to just as a test? Perhaps ask a neighbor.

I'm unable to connect to my friends wifi but the unprotected neibors wifi I can just find. The ip is set to automatic and I'm also not receiving any data packets. What could be causing this? Other people in the house connect just fine but not my laptop.

A:Unable to connect to SSID

Hi,

First off - can you 'see' this router if you click on the wi-fi icon in your task bar ?  If you can, then normally all you need to do to connect is click on the SSID, and on 'Connect'. If it is secured, like your friend's, then you will need to type in his access key - WEP, WPA-PSK or whatever - and you should connect.

As this key is a case-sensitive password, you need to type it in exactly correctly, otherwise it will not connect. Without his access key, you will not be able to connect. Once you have connected to it by correctly entering the access code, you will be asked if you want to connect automatically. If you now click on 'Yes', the next time you are at your friend's house, you will find yourself on-line without having to repeat this process.

If you can't see your friend's router, but he can connect, it may be that it is set not to transmit the SSID. In which case ask him if he can change this setting to 'Transmit SSID' so that your computer can 'see' it.

Can this be true? I have a wireless network that does not broadcast its SSID, as this is recommended for best security. All of the computers running XP and XP Pro have no trouble connecting to the network. We just acquired a new Acer notebook with Vista Home Pro and it connects to the network just fine as long as I allow broadcast of the SSID, but as soon as I hide the SSID, the Vista notebook can no longer connect. I find it really hard to believe that Microsoft could be this dumb, especially since it works on XP. Can someone suggest what I may be doing wrong?

Hi,

Do you have any idea on how to resolved this problem? I cant able to detect or see the SSID of my router at home but i can detect others. I tried upgrading my wireless lan drivers and removed also the all of the stored wireless network in the wireless network manager but still i cant detect the SSID at my house.

Hope you can help me guys.

Thanks.

A:Unable to detect wireless SSID at home but can detect other wireless SSID?

any other PCs working OK on your home wireless ?

can you run xirrus please and post a screen shot

its possible the router is on auto channel and may have changed to wireless channel 12 or 13 which is allowed across the world except for north america and if the equipment you have is set for the american market , you may not pickup that channel

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
( the site now appears to require a business email, and does not allow webbased emails like gmail, hotmail or yahoo etc )

Use the links below

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-Monitor-Download-99109.html

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here
http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/xirruswifiinspectorguide1-2-0

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)
Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

To post a screen shot of the active window.

Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-use-the-windows-snipping-tool/

Windows 8
you can use the snipping tool > Open Snipping Tool (From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type "snip" and press enter.
>Press the Esc. key.
>go back to your Windows 8 start screen - Swipe from left or press Window Button
>Press Ctrl+PrntScr button to use Snipping Tool

A:Solved: Not able to connect with ssid off

The simplest and best way is to enable SSID broadcast since there is no reason to disable it except for the myth that doing so is "security." The second best way is to disable the SSID broadcast after you have connected to the network once.

Was wondering about added security of using MAC filtering and WPA2 encryption, when saw this post here:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic59062.html
On typical private home network, if set router NOT to broadcast SSID, what are general steps to connect a wireless device (my case, laptop) to the network - since you don't see network names available?

Then what about each time you connect w/ that wireless device to network?
In this case, router is Linksys WRT54GL. Laptop uses Vista x32.

Thanks.

A:How to connect to wireless network if SSID not broadcast?

In my case, running three computers with Vista/XP and a D-Link DIR300 router, I stopped broadcasting the SSID, and the computers detected an "Unknown network". I then had to type in the exact SSID, and after that I was asked for the password. Later, Windows recognized the network automatically on those computers, and connected without asking any questions (I think I had to select "connect automatically" or something like that.)

We have a linksys Wireless Access point (WAP11 Version 2.8) on our network. I set it up with a static IP and enabled the MAC address filtering to allow only the MAC address of the laptop. The Broadcast SSID is currently enabled.

Everything works great and the laptop can connect to the network through wireless. (I am using the windows XP wireless software)

I want to disable the broadcast SSID for security reasons. I disable it through the linksys admin page and then created a manual wireless connection in XP with the correct SSID. However, it will not connect at all when broadcast SSID is disabled even though I set up a manual connection with the correct SSID in Windows XP.

As soon as I enable the broadcast SSID everything works again.

Any Ideas on how to do this so it will connect and the SSID is not broadcasted? Thanks!

A:how to connect to XP wireless network without broadcast SSID

I don't know the answer to your specific question. If you're interested in security of your network, use a good key or pass phrase with the highest level of encryption that your equipment handles. Probably this would be WPA - PSK. Even WEP will keep "honest" people out. Don't bother with MAC filtering or non-broadcasted SSID or static IP 'cause those won't deter the crooks, just put up roadblocks for people like you.

My wireless network was working fine as of last night. This morning I couldn't connect. For some reason my router isn't broadcasting a SSID anymore. Tried restarting computer, powering router off and on, and also resetting the router. None of that worked. I cannot connect to the router's default ip of 192.168.1.1 either.

My router is an Asus RT-AC66U. I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit.

Suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Today the laptop with 8 suddenly cant find my home network, not available in win8 or in the inssider program. I can see others, but not mine.

Tried deleting the profile, netsh wlan delete profile ?profile name? then add it again but no go.

So, i started another laptop with a fresh win 8 install. It finds the wireless at logon and works for 5 minutes before the network icon in the tray gets the white "star". Home ssid again not available over networks.

So, on to the third laptop with win8 and it find the network and so long its working after 30 minutes.
security is wpa2-personal, and alone using the channel number.
Router is dlink 615 with dd-wrt.

Any ideas why the home network suddenly has vanished?

Does the computer that connects, but loses it connection sooner, have an adequate signal compared with the other one that connects and stays connected longer--perhaps still working. I hope the title made a little sense We currently have - laptops on location depending on the day There are around signals in the area including our two from on wifi, working same 2nd LAN connect drops to Internet SSID will which isn't insane considering signals in an apt building isn't unusual and rarely causes conflict This is in a two story office building with ours on the top floor Directly below us is a restaurant which I assume some of their appliances mess with our signal Regardless of that we still have great signal strength We have two routers in Internet drops from working wifi, will connect to 2nd SSID on same LAN the office to help ensure signal strength and two SSIDs for the swapping mentioned below A random number laptops at random times of the day will lose connection to our signals Which laptop when how many laptops and which SSID is not consistent There is nothing wrong on the WiFi icon or an ipconfig all and others will still be working on the network just fine You can then swap to the other SSID which could at the current time have users working on Internet drops from working wifi, will connect to 2nd SSID on same LAN it and users with it broken and your internet works I've tried to find some sort of pattern behind this Time brand model laptop and WiFi card nothing leads to a pattern No where in our office is the signal weak Sometimes we do remote conferences Internet drops from working wifi, will connect to 2nd SSID on same LAN presentation from our location and it looks quite bad when the laptop presenting the remote session randomly drops in the middle of it so it's becoming quite an issue there It of course is a nuisance regardless of what people are using the internet for Any suggestions of something to try Edit I forgot to mention that both routers are simply APs connected to the main firewall which does dhcp etc

Just to clarify some terminology...

APs (i.e. "access points") are more often referred to "wireless access points", i.e. WAPs.

They are not in fact "routers". They are simply "wireless access points", which provide secondary wireless networks (i.e. SSID's) at remote distant locations away from the primary router, through a wired connection to the true primary wired router. This solution is commonly used when the wireless network available from the true primary router just can't reach the remote location dependably because of walls, distance or other radio frequency interference in the neighborhood.

Any device connecting (either wireless, or even wired if the WAP also provides some wired connectors as part of its "wired/wireless switch" technology) through these secondary wireless networks is actually passed on through by the AP to the primary router, where true network connected device management and DHCP occurs. Devices connecting to the WAP (either wired or wireless, doesn't matter) all appear as "wired connected devices" back on the primary router. This is because the WAP really is a "wired multi-port switch" from the perspective of the primary router, and any device connected through a wired switch will appear as a "wired connected device" on the primary router. It just happens that a WAP also provides a wireless way to connect to it, but this fact is hidden from the primary router and still looks like a "wired connected device".

Also, the primary main router (where DHCP management occurs) does normally also contain "firewall" technology to prevent intrusion from the outside. But the device itself is still referred to as a "router", not a "firewall".
Now, as to your actual issue, which I'd describe as random and occasional and unpredictable "fadeout" of wireless connectivity to assorted laptops, even while other laptops remain connected just fine to the same wireless network (i.e. SSID, from one of your two WAPs). The existing wireless connection is working fine from that laptop, until for no apparent reason it just is lost.

Well, I'm not sure there's an actual true solution here. I'd say it might be externally caused by the comings and goings of the other wireless networks also active in your building, potentially causing occasional RF interference on the very same wireless channel that happens to be in use for your own various wireless connected laptops which might then be affected. Remember that if your laptops vary by manufacturer and type, then the wireless adapters in them almost certainly also varies in their capability and sensitivity and reliability. Even when two laptops are side by side, their wireless reliability may vary depending on which wireless network they're currently connected to, as well as just their own inherent wireless hardware capability.
These types of situations can certainly be bothersome and annoying, as they are intermittent and seem to elude any genuine correction attempts, but are really "fatal" when they occur and that's harmful. But you can certainly try out other adaptations to improve the reliability and consistency.

(1) you can try WAP hardware from different manufacturers, to see if that provides superior performance. The WAP units from Ubiquiti (which come in assorted capabilities and prices depending on your need) are very highly regarded for commercial WiFi setup situations, and perhaps need to be installed professionally. But you presumably get what you pay for. I don't have any firsthand experience with these myself (other than to read the user reviews) but they're probably much more consistent and dependable than everyday inexpe... Read more

Try removing profiles after you remove the device with Device manager and letting windows detect it again.

I usually use the internet in 3 locations on my laptop and till a few days back the laptop would connect fine to all 3 wifi networks. However, out of the blue my laptop stopped connecting to the wifi at location A and B, and still connects fine at location C. Other laptops and phones still connect fine to the wifi at location A and B, there's been no change in the software on my laptop since before the problem and I've run a system restore too to back when it was working, with no luck. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter driver, also cleared my saved network locations and tried to connect again. Any other suggestions?

I am currently located in a serviced office building where the connection has always been great before Windows 7. the connection has always worked with DHCP. We have tried manually programming the IP address etc to see if it wil connect but nothing. Can anyone give me any advice for things to try as I am tearing my hair out now. Are there any particular settings that need to be changed for DHCP through Cat 5 cabling, etc

May be as simple as a driver. type device manger in search. Go to the network tab. Is you device listed? does it have a yellow triangle on it? are there any other "unknown" device with yellow on them?

If your device is not listed, or has a yellow triangle on it you need to install the driver. Go to the MFR website and download it.

Is this VPS located on a Windows Server? Are you running Windows 8 Pro version?

Are you running any type of third party anti virus software on this machine?

The directions for connecting to a VPN with Windows 8 may be helpful.

Windows 8 VPN Get Connected

If this is a Cisco VPN then it's not working with Windows 8 yet from what I have read.

Hi, I'm using a year-and-a-bit old Acer laptop, windows 7. I'm on a wireless network at home, but it keeps on disconnecting me. I always get this message:
It'll continue giving this message for a few minutes, and if I'm lucky it will connect me again. Restarting my computer/rebooting the router, turning everything off etc. doesn't work, and the windows diagnostic thingy doesn't come up with anything. None of the other computers in my house get this problem.
Please help? I'm stuck and it's really irritating

Hi -
I know many people have had this problem, but I need help. I had to reformat my hard drive, and after that, I haven't been able to connect to my home network, though I can connect to other networks. Every time I try to connect, it just says "Unable to connect" (I can't even enter in the password). When I click on troubleshoot, it just says that it can't find the problem. Any ideas??

A:Windows 7 unable to connect

Well, the normal recommendations are to unplug both your router and modem for 30-60 seconds. Plug the modem back in and wait until all the normal lights are lit with no blinking. Then plug your router back in. If that does not work you can reset your router to the factory defaults by pushing the rest button which should be on the back or bottom of the router.

A:Windows was unable to connect to... DD-WRT firmware

Focus on notebook bios, atheros drivers (some topic shows what sometimes helps to install older driver) and adapter settings. In my opinion changing of dd-wrt settings will not affect your problem, because it is in atheros, not in dd-wrt. I'm absolutely sure, if you buy wireless USB adapter for 20$, it will work perfectly

Also found one topic then user solved problem by disabling 802.11 Bluetooth High Speed in atheros adapter advanced properties in windows. In all other wireless adapters this option set to Auto, and don't cause any problems. Only atheros have it set to Enabled by default and this was a root cause.

Very common problem but with many possible solutions, some of which are covered in the link below. It seems that 3G connection and using a proxy can cause this problem. If you look to the right in the link below there are more links to the same problem.

I received an update yesterday morning from MS and then had trouble with the machine booting and connecting. Finally after 10 or 15 minutes of a black screen it booted and then I was able to connect to the internet. It connected all day yesterday and then last night I lost the connection again.

I rebooted this morning - and once again it takes 10 minutes for everything to load but then once loaded will not connect to the internet. I have another desktop running through the same router so I know the connection is good.

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Nic

That last update seems to have caused alot of problems.
Use System restore to a pint of time before you instaled the update, or

Hi, I realise that this problem has been asked many times over the Internet, however I am at my wits end over this problem.
I would like to have Windows 10, but I have downloaded it four times, and each time I am unable to connect to the Internet, either by WiFi or Ethernet cable. I have Windows 7 Home, Premium, 64bit. with a Generic Desktop. Each time I have upgraded to 10, I have had to revert back to Windows 7.
I have tried all the suggestions on Microsoft. and Google Search, without any success. I have purchased new Wireless adapter Cards, and USB wireless Adapters. I have no idea now, as to what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have searched and tried many suggestions over the last 3 - 4 months, without any success. When I revert back to Windows 7 Home Premium, all works fine again, without any problems.

A:Unable to Connect to Internet with Windows 10

Hello, you might have a basic low level driver incompatibility. Not all PCs work well with Win 10. I can't tell how old your PC is, and you'd be in the best position to assess that. For example, some laptops sold with Win 7 simply cannot be upgraded to '10.

Suggest you research the compatibility of your MBO and see if there's a record of anyone else with experience of it.

A:Unable to connect to the modem with windows 7 x64

Your desktop IP configuration is
IP: 169.254.125.148
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: none

Your notebook's IP configuration is
IP: 84.194.227.6
Subnet mask: 255.255.254.0
Default Gateway: 84.194.224.1
DHCP server: 195.130.132.102

You have not given the IPCONFIG/ALL of your file server which could be your Gateway, DHCP server and DNS server.

Your notebook is getting the IP configuration from the wireless Access Point which is fine. These values may not be applicable to your desktop as it is directly connected to the switch.

If your file server is configured as DHCP server, and your desktop's IP configuration is set to automatically obtain IP address and DNS server addresses, then your desktop will get these values from your server.

Otherwise you have to manually set the values for IP address, Default Gateway, DNS server to get internet on your desktop.

As I can see the default gateway entry for the desktop is empty.

So please open the network adapter's properties on your desktop and check the above values.

If they are set manually you have to obtain the default gateway IP and DNS server IP from your fileserver and enter in the network card IP configuration.

Or you can make the IP configuration to get these values automatically from DHCP server on your LAN.

If you have a system admin check these with him. He should be able to help you out.

If the wireless is integrated get the latest driver from the motherboard manufacturer's web site; else get the latest from Realtec's site.

Disable encryption and MAC Address filtering on the router and try to connect. If successful you can probably re-enable encryption and reconnect.

Hello, I'm having some wifi issues. In the past few weeks I've only been able to use the internet on my laptop when connected via ethernet, despite having used the same wireless, router, laptop, etc perfectly fine for years!

When I first start up my laptop, I can see the list of my available connections. I press connect for my usual home router and then it will say "Windows was unable to connect to blahblahblah". And then the list will have a red cross and claim no connections are available.

If I press troubleshoot problem, Windows Network Diagnostics says to "investigate router or access point issues", which involves turning the device off (done this several times). When I select "check to see if problem is fixed", it thinks for a bit then says "Windows cannot resolve your wireless connectivity issue".

Please can you help?

A:Windows unable to connect to Wifi

Welcome to BC. !

Have you Reset the router ?....this usually involves inserting the end of a paperclip into a tiny hole located on the router itself......google the name of the router and it will show you where that hole is.
The word Reset should be written directly above/beside the hole.

To do this, press and hold the Reset button for 10 seconds. NOTE: Resetting your router to its default factory settings will also reset your router's password. The router's default password is “admin” as for the username, just leave the field blank.

The Setup: 2.4 = bank2.4, 5.0 = bank50. These are the wireless names I've given to my routers SSID. However, remember I said "WIRELESS". Then how come when I'm hard wired into my router, it shows me bank50? I just wonder sometimes if I'm connected to my router wireless or hard wire. How can I get this to show me bank (when I'm hard wired into the router), bank2.4 when I'm on my wireless or bank 50?

Next question:

I love windows 7 pro. One of the many features I love about it is the fact that I can click on Network and Sharing, then click on a little tab on the right side called "See Full Map" and see everything that is on my network. Lately tho my Netgear wifi extender is failing me which is causing this feature to start giving me errors. Now does windows 8, 8.1, 9 and 10 have this feature or did they S*** can it?

Thanks

A:SSID/Windows 8, 8.1, 9 and 10

Go to Network and sharing and disable the wireless adapter temporarily and check the wired connection.

Yes, the network Map is no longer available in Windows 8, 8.1 or 10. There is no Windows 9.

Hi there,

I recently rebooted an older laptop that has a wireless B & G card. When I tried to log on to the wireless connection (2wire model#:2701HG-B) I received an error message: "Windows is unable to connect to selected network..." I have other computers connected to the gateway but cannot figure out how to connect this one. I have used both windows and my wireless adapter's connection utility to try but with no luck. (I have a Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card.)

I have also tried switching the connection between shared and open as well as the password between WEP and WPA encryption. I am not sure what else to do.

Please help. Thanks - Ryan

A:Windows is unable to connect to selected network...

You look at the settings of a working connection and then set this laptop up accordingly.

You should not be playing/guessing at the wireless encryption method. It is either wep or wpa but you need to know that and the correct key or you are not going anywhere.

work on getting a wireless connection to the router then the rest should follow.

Try connecting with the passwords off. Also try with firewall and AV off.

"... The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks and try again."

I was given an old pc (Dell Optiplex 320) which had been used where I work. I did not reformat, but reinstalled XP Pro from the supplied Dell reinstallation disc. I have installed drivers for the graphics card and for the wireless adapter. I am unable to connect wirelessly at home or at work. I do have the network key for the workplace router, but can't get to the point where I need to enter it. I tried to connect to my smartphone's wifi hotspot, to no avail. I'm sure this is a simple fix, however my skills are spotty at best.

A:"Windows is unable to connect to the wireless network."

If these are the specs for the computer you have :-  http://www.northwoodcomputer.com/Flyers/opti_320techspecs.pdf

Then, as built by Dell, it doesn't contain a wireless card !  It is of course always possible that one was fitted later. If you are certain you (1) have a wireless card, (2) have identified it correctly, and (3) have managed to find and install the drivers for it, the possibility remains that the card may be faulty. Experience shows that wireless cards can fail, and in some very non-obvious ways !

It might be worth your while trying a USB wi-fi dongle if only to check that the problem is or is not with your card. I have used one in my own computer since the day we went wireless - see picture - and is mounted in a magnetic mounted clip as far forward on the casing as it will go with a short extension cable to the back panel.

http://imageshack.com/a/img577/9316/v3k4.jpg

If you cannot borrow one, they are not expensive. That is why I bought one in the first place, it was cheaper than an internal card. But it will tell you if a wi-fi signal is reaching your computer and whether or not you can connect. If you can connect with a dongle, then your wireless card is probably deceased.

Try to Reset your WiFi : Settings>Network & Internet>Network Reset. You will lose all the Passwords and Config. Windows will reboot ,but it waits 5 min. to do it.
Try to Reset Firewall: Control Panel>Firewall>Restore Defaults . There is also an Option "Troubleshoot my Network"
Try the Troubleshooter: Control Panel>Troubleshooting>View All>Internet Connection

Hello, I'm posting this here, because I now think a problem, that may have been a bug, could now be a winsock problem. What is happening, is I cannot connect to windows update. It is only anything having to do with and url dealing with windows update. When I get the screen, "unable to connect" and select to have I.E. run diagnostics, it doesn't come up with anything. I've run serveral virus/malware scans and nothing comes up. I have XP, a legal copy, but it does not have the diagnostics software. I have downloaded some sort of winsock "fix" software, but do not want to run this, in fear of totally messing something up. Can somebody please assist me here? Thank you.

I reinstalled Windows 7. First, the computer did not find the network adapter. I looked up my computer's serial number online and was able to get the drivers installed in order to connect to the network. Now, however, I am unable to connect from the network to the Internet.

I have a Westell 6100 modem and Belkin router. I tried resetting the modem and router numerous times, to no avail. I am able to access the Internet by plugging the phone cord directly to the computer, so my Internet is working, but not wireless. The device driver shows an exclamation point next to the Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect Modem.

The error is that there is a disconnect between the access point and the router...something like that. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cables, shutting down and powering back up...

Can you please help? Thank you!!!

I recently moved from an XP machine to Windows 7 Home premium and I am now unable to connect to network shares, printers, etc at work. This is a laptop that I use both at home and at work and it's not in the domain (neither was the XP machine). On the XP machine I just mapped network drives and printers using the server name and then used my network credentials (\domain\username and password). The Windows 7 machine is in the network (it's wired through ethernet) and I can access the internet through our proxy server. When I look under "Network", I see all of the servers and clients on the network, but when I try to connect to one of them, I am prompted for login/password- once I enter these, it says "Logon failure: unknown username or bad password".

Why does this work under XP and not Windows 7?

Thanks,
Geoff

Looks like nobody has any ideas on this one. I guess I'll just dual-boot XP - this is the kind of thing that makes it tough for me to defend Microsoft.

Thats what I get when I try connecting to my wireless connection via my laptop. It works fine on my other computer. Any way I can solve this? Thanks!

A:Windows is unable to connect to the selected network

has the router got secruity set and have you set that up on the PC
are you using windows wireless and the utility that came with the network adapter - sometimes these can cause problems

I assume the other PC is using wireless

make model of Pc and adapter would help

do you see the wireless network OK in the list - if so does it say anything about secruity

Hoping someone out there can help....I'm having trouble connecting wirelessly with my hp pavilion laptop, running on Windows 7. I just moved and am using a new modem and linksys router. I know the router works fine because my pc (also windows 7) connects just fine.

Also, when I take my laptop to a different wireless network, (i.e. coffee shop, library, etc.) it works fine.

I am able to get an ethernet connection, just not wirelessly. Windows diagnostics gets me nowhere. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

After a week of using Windows Vista, Internet Explorer stopped connecting to the internet. I use FireFox as an alternative and I have a wireless ethernet card installed. Is there a way to repair IE that works? Logged on as Administrator, I followed the instructions to disable all add-ins, closed and open IE again and under Tools/Advanced, clicking RESET just pops up the message to close all open windows and programs. I closed the sidebar, started task manager and proceeded to stop tasks when it said "Access is denied".

Starting up the DID for WV Home Premium 32-bit only presented the Install option, so I did not want to begin that.

A:Internet Explorer Unable to Connect in Windows Vista

As a follow up to this post, I learned that when logging on to a different account, which displays icons that I had under Windows XP, I can connect to the internet with Internet Explorer.
In the new account were IE will not connect, when I click IE Tools/Internet Options/Conections/Setup, it says I am already connected to the Internet after I click Add, but when I click Browse the Internet Now, it says 'Navigation to the webpage was canceled'. Typing a different web page does not work. Going through diaognistics at that point found no problems with my internet connection.

I am using Windows 7 Home and Premium and I am unable to connect to Linux machine. I am getting the pop up for providing the username and password to connect to Linux Machine but it rejects the same. I had the same issue with Windows 7 Professional and I resolved it through chaging the policy as below.

Control panel - administrative tools-Local Security policy-local policies- Security options- network security: "LAN Manager authentication level" Changed to "Send LM & NTLM responses"

I came to know that there is no "Local Security policy " on Windows 7 Home and Premium version. Please help me to solve this issue. Thanks in advance.

Disable encryption on the router and try to connect that way. What encryption are you using? Does the adapter support that? Do you have service pack 3?

Hi,

I am trying to connect to the internet using an external wireless device (Netgear model:MA101), I have managed to install the drivers and my wireless network is coming up as an option! For some bizarre reason when I try and connect the following messages appears:-

"Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try again"

I then refresh and try to connect but the message constantly appears I have rebooted my computer in case it needs to reset after installing the driver for the wireless device. No joy!

I know it's not a problem with the internet or the wirelss network because I currently have my laptop connected and working perfect. Any ideas?

A:Solved: Windows is unable to connect to the selected network

Did some checking via Google.

The Netgear model:MA101 is a very old 802.11b adapter that uses only WEP encryption. Netgear doesn't even list it on their site anymore.

Did find some old posts that say it doesn't work with routers using b/g mixed mode, but only with those using b mode.

the pcie family controller is the wired network, not the wifi. you need to download the wofi drivers, install them and you should be good. the easiest way to do this is to hook up to the router with a cable, then download it. there are four available on the download page that said wifi, try them all to see which one works. i found them here: http://www.samsung.com/ph/support/model/NP-N102S-B04PH

A:unable to connect to online games, msn, windows update etc..

If you reformatted and it still does that, then you've got a network problem.
It could be on your end, or it could be on the isp's end.

The first thing I would do is call them up and get a tech on the phone, who will among other things, be able to remotely reset your modem/router. It's a free call, and it could save you needless troubleshooting if the problem is not on your end.

nuwanju...I'm not an expert on network cards, but, when the internet connection shuts down, does the network card still show up in Device Manager? Is there a yellow question mark or a red x there?

I have a Windows 7 machine sending shares across the network. Other Windows 7 machines have no problems connecting, but XP machines cannot connect. (Win7 can connect to XP shares).

I have adjust every setting that I have seen to no avail. This includes turning off HomeGroups, turning off password. Removing my password from my user account. Adding "Everyone" to each of the shares. I have even messed with the Local Group Policy Editor to send unencrypted passwords to third party SMB's.

Any help would be appreciated. I have searched everywhere and found no luck.

A while ago, after accidentally opening the Store app, Windows forced me to restart to install Windows 8.1, which I was unable to weeks before because of driver issues. I didn't need Windows 8.1 yet, so I didn't download it before then.

However, during the installation, it failed (again) due to either my antivirus or the aforementioned driver issues. Upon logging back in, my computer was unable to find any WiFi networks. Seeing as I live in the middle of a densely populated city, this isn't possible. Plugging in an ethernet cord still works, so no issues with that adapter or my home internet. I checked all the drivers for my WiFi adapter, and my Ethernet adapter, and both are up to date and display as working properly. Restarting several times didn't seem to fix this issue, and using system restore didn't seem to work either. I used the Troubleshooting tool, and that didn't give my any helpful advice or answers, so I got nothing.

What can I do to fix this issue?

For reference, I have a Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter, Driver Version 6.30.95.14, and a Qualcomm Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller, Driver Version 2.1.0.7.

Hi,

My first post on this site, so I hope someone can help.

I am trying to clean a Dell Latitude C640 running XP SP3 for my niece, which has become very slow, so must be infected with something.

I have tried the following (not necessarily in this order):
1. Ran Sybot
2. Ran Adaware
3. Ran Housecall
4. Ran Wise Registry cleaner
5. Ran Malwarebytes
6. Ran Hijackthis

Now the browsers (have also loaded Chrome) are redirecting at random to page. I also can't get access to windows update.

I have attached a copy of the HijackThis log.

All help is very gratefully received.

Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone knew how Windows handles the following situation:

1) You have SSID "bob" in your Windows preferred WiFi network list.
a) This SSID will join to you your home network

2) You are then in a new geographical location, in range of a DIFFERENT network, with an access point broadcasting the same SSID "bob"
What does Windows do here?
Does it see the same SSID and assume it's the same network and automatically try to connect you to it, or is it smarter and realizes that this is a different AP, and waits for your intervention?

Also, what is the behavior for Vista and 7?

A:2 different networks - Same SSID, how does Windows handle this?

We have WinXP in the situation you mentioned (with different channel configured), it will just connect to the SSID as if it was the same network automatically.

Hi,

I recently restored the whole system on my sister's HP because of a virus that I was unable to remove manually.
The system restore went fine until it reached the point where it was going to reinstall Windows. The computer just turned itself off and the software install was not complete. Nor am I able to reinstall it again. Therefore I have to hold down ctrl+alt+del, go to task manager, click on audit.exe and end the process to turn the computer on. But I can't do anything with it in safemode. The main problem is: I can't connect to the internet! It won't find my wireless network even though Network Discovery is on. What can I do about the internet? And is there any way to install Windows again without a CD?
Thanks in advance!

A:Unable to connect to the internet after system restore and Windows install

whats the model of the HP by tapping F10 or F11 as it boots you may get into the recovery manager

i confused is the software now installed on the PC ?

is this a restore going back to a previous date - or a re-install

when you re-install the software you may need to download drivers - lets see a device manager

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Device Manager
Post back the results in device manager
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >
windows 7
start > control panel> System and Security> Device Manager

network adaptors, click on the + > post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X
post a screen shot of the device manager - network adapters

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here

I have been using a Sprint mobile broadband USB data modem for over a year now.

I had a home network of 3 client PCs connected to a router via Ethernet cables.

I had the modem plugged into my computer. (XP Pro) The other PCs running XP home.

I had multiple users accounts on my computer. 1. Admin, 2. Mine (I use to keep from having admin security issues) and others for my children.

As long as my computer was turned on (no user had to be logged in), all the other network computers could access internet.

Everything was great until I bought a new system for myself this spring.

It is not a brand name computer. (None of my computers are) I had it put together at a computer shop.

Reluctantly I let the tech talk me into purchasing Windows 7 Pro instead of XP Pro. I went with the 32-bit for compatibility with my older programs.

I was able to set up (with some minor frustration) a new home group network using the same setup as I had before.

I managed to get all 4 networked computers connected to the internet as long as my new computer (with the modem) is turned on, logged in to my user, and connected. (Not the admin)
My issue is with my win7 computer. Only 1 of my user accounts on my computer will connect to the internet.

I have 3 windows user accounts on my computer.

1. Admin

2. My user (I use to keep from having admin security issues)

3. A dummy user for others to connect to the internet. Because I do not wish to have other people able to access my user.

When I first set up the internet network connection (from my admin account) I was able to connect with both the admin user and my user. Each time I switched users though it would log off the internet.

To avoid others on my user login I set up a dummy user for the other computers on the network to be able to connect to the internet. But when you log in to that user and try to connect to the 3G network it won't connect and gives me the 678 error.

And now the admin user is giving me the same error. (Which really sucks because I can't get on to update programs)
When I try to go in and change settings for the network properties I start to get the same error on my user login and then I can't get onto the net at all.

I've had to restore now many times to get access back on even my user.

All I know is I've been using windows since it first came out and I think Windows 7 is the least user friendly version I have ever used.

I am very frustrated. Please help!

I hope I explained my problem with enough detail.
PS.
I have run all of the trouble shooting scans and it keeps coming up with no problems could be found.

The error message when I try to connect is: error 678

Thank you

MS Windows 7 Pro 32-bit
Intel Core i5 CPU 661 @ 3.33GHz, 4.0GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 graphics card

Not going to be much help but error 678 is specific to XP and has description here error 678 - Google Search.

Re networking. Homegroup is for win 7 machines. Mixed environments should use workgroup (and IPv4).

Workgroup may resolve the connectivity issues
