Preferred Solution: Windows Installer: Preparing to Install error (at startup)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:"Windows Installer - Preparing to install" Error Message

Wow. This is one of the problems that i had when using anything involving windows office. I use a beta copy of MS Photdraw from '99 i believe. when you installed an office prog or another prog that used the windows installer there was an option to 'install on first use' I believe that is where the problem is. I reinstalled the program in question, with full install and Ive yet to see the problem again. I could be wrong on your situation, thought id throw in my $.02

"windows installer preparing to install..." message keeps popping up every few seconds on my dell desktop with xp media center edition sp3. I thought it might be malware so I ran malwarebytes antimalware and found nothing. I read somewhere that I should install and run the windows installer cleaner so I tried this but it won't let me install the cleaner. It gives a message saying that another program is installing and this needs to finish first. I read up on not being able to run the windows install cleaner and tried to end one of the two msexec processes from the task manager. this was a bad idea as it caused me to have another message about spss 15 trying to install every couple of seconds in addition to the windows installer. This is really frustrating. Unfortunately, I have a dissertation to write. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

OK guys....This is driving me nuts. It never used to happen but now it does. Whenever I try to open Microsoft word or excel, or even when I run disk cleanup This box comes up entitled Windows Installer and the message inside of it says "Preparingt to Install"....This goes away after about 30 -45 seconds and the the stuff opens up....But it's a pain in the butt....I think it also does this for some other stuff too.

I haven't made any changes to the computer that I can remeber except running some anti-virus database updates.

I'm not too swift with computers and I can live with this if I have but DO I HAVE TO????

-----------Help please.....Kaara Larson

I have this dialog box coming up all the time............
It just sits there ....doesn't do a thing.............unless I cancel it.

I think the problem came when I wanted to uninstall Microsoft Home & student 2010.
I finally did this & have gone back to a system restore point but still have this Installer box coming up.
It is getting annoying & time consuming.
I have googled it & found a multitude of answers....some i tried.....others seemd to complicated.
I am a novice at this.

Anyone with the patience to help me please?????

A:Windows Installer ...Preparing to Install.....

It seems as if you have done a poor un-installation of Office. Only ever un-install programs using the Add/Remove function in Control Panel.

Try reinstalling the Office package, restart, un-install from add/remove, restart then open Internet Explorer.

This should fix your problem.

If not post back.

After executing a system restore due to a problem with installing Adobe Creative Suite 3, I reinstalled said suite successfully. Since then "Windows Installer - Preparing to Install..." appears and seems to cycle itself at least two or three times , every time I launch "Control Panel", "My Computer", "Network Connections", "Printers and Faxes", "Internet Explorer", open any windows folder, in other words, anything that has anything to do with Microsoft apps and services.

This does not happen when I launch anything non-Microsoft, i.e., Open Office, any Adobe CS3 app, Skype, etc.

I do not run any Norton anything (never been installed), I do run AVG free anti-virus and Zone Alarm free edition.

Computer Specs:
AMD Athlon XP processor 1700+
1.47 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Windows Installer error and installation or startup

This Windows Installer error is quite common. It is usually trying to install something/program already on your system such as Office etc.

In your case it is trying to install "Scan". What on earth is that? Do you know what it is?

The way to fix the error is to run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
Read the instructions here before using it. There is a download link too
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301

When you run this you wll be presented with a list of everything installed by Windows Installer, and the solution is to remove ONLY the entry for whatever is in the error message.

Have a look at all the entries and see if you can associate any of them with this "Scan". Do not remove anything else as that application will not then work, so do not remove anything you are not sure about.

You could also look for an entry which does not make sense such as random letters or numbers and try removing that.

It is all caused by a corrupted install/uninstall by Windows Installer. Suspect the last thing you installed/uninstalled

I believe someone playing with my PC erased an important file. System restore will not work, although all my restore points are there. Add\remove programs has disappeared from programs as well as a number of programs are not functioning. I can access the internet OK.

Windows update says Windows installer 3.1 needs to be installed. When I proceed with the install, I keep getting the following error message.
The file c:\windows\system32\msi.dll is open or in use by another application. I have tried to find out what is running or being used by this application and I can not find or figure it out.

5) ran a registry edit to fix Windows Installer as found on MS website, still cannot install.
6) ran .NET cleanup tool from MSDN
7) reregistered msiexec for 64 bit, 4 commands.
8) tried reinstall using web installer
(all work done under administrative network login).
Also tried reinstall when logged in as local system administrator, same error.

I still get "Windows Installer Service cannot be accessed" error when trying to reinstall .NET Framework 4.5.2.

I do have the option to revert to restore point and get back to where this computer was before all this started.

Advice?

Thanks!
Lynn

I am running Windows XP professional version 2002.  It has the Service Pack 3.  I am trying to install a scanner from my bank but I receive the following error message:

'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.'

I worked with the tech support for the scanner.  He tried uninstalling and reloading the driver and each time he attempted an operation got this same error notice.  When he opened the program folder there were no files in it.  He concluded that the driver program was not properly loading and did not have a fix.

Is this error due to Microsoft ending support for XP?  Is it an error in my system?  Anyone have an idea how to handle this?

I operate Windows XP. My printer stopped working a week ago. I tried to reinstall the printer from the CD but it wouldn't download. Since then I get a recurring message that Windows is 'Preparing to Install' which stops everything whilst I wait for it to clear itself. This happens at random times whilst I am on line.
Please can anyone give me some advice?

So, I double click on the program then it says: Preparing to install windows with frontpage, then shows a loading bar thingy (those squares going back and forth to indicate it is doing something) To get the program to actully work I have to keep pressing Cancel a bunch of times.

A:Windows Explorer, preparing to install

Hi vnaff and welcome to TSF !

Have you added some hardware recently, plugged some new usb device, installed some new program ?

Repeatedly press F8 while the computer starts and choose safe mode in the menu that will appear. Tell us if it also happens in safe mode.

If it doesn't happen in safe mode then in normal mode go to start => run and type msconfig. Go to the startup tab and see if you can identify all the startup items there. Use this site : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/. Try unchecking the ones that are not needed, but don't touch the firewall and antivirus.

I reinstalled Office 2010 Pro Plus 2010. Now, if I attempt to launch the Word, I get "Preparing to install . . .", then "Please wait while Windows configures Office Pro Plus 2010". After it is done a message indicates rebooting is required. After rebooting, the same thing repeats. I did it in Safe mode as was suggested but to no avail. I did repair install but was no cure.
Any suggestion is appreciated.

A:Preparing to install then Please wait while Windows configure Office..

You installed Office 2010 along with Office 2010 pro? That wasn't a very good idea. You can only have a single office program of any specific type at one time installed on your computer. It is like installing firefox internet browser twice, but with more damage. Office integrates more completely into your computer and can cause more problems if not done right.

Your best bet is uninstalling all of it and attempting to install it again. Use Revo Uninstaller Free in advanced mode (it will be a pop up in Revo after you choose uninstall) and remove all traces (may need to delete extra files left over, which will be another popup). If you cannot uninstall it for any reason in Revo, try control panel uninstall programs (the normal method). If that doesn't work, download Ccleaner (you might do this in addition anyway) and run the registry scanner. Only delete registry items relating to Microsoft office. Any other registry items are fine to leave alone (this program has the potential to remove something you might not want removed if used incorrectly).

After that, Run this tool: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker multiple times if errors are found. Restart, and attempt a windows update (make sure everything is updated). Then try to install ONE (1) Office suite program. If it fails, run this: Repair Install and try again.

A:Preparing laptop for Windows 7 install - video drivers?

hi mate,

i was in the exact same position as you are are lol. I have a vaio though. It has 4 gig ram, the same card as yours. I had windows vista 32 bit too. So i ended up installing windows 7 64 bit on a separate partition and so far no problems!! I also used to use the mobility modder in vista but in windows 7 it hasnt worked for me yet. However in their forums some people report success with those drivers in win7 so i must be doing something wrong. But i dont think there is the need for modifiying the drivers just yet because the ones that install automatically when u install win7 are relitively new as well.

So i would suggest u go for win7 64 bit if u can, but make sure u have the other drivers available for your ACER, like motherboard, audio, etc.. Should be available on their website..

hope this helps

Hi Miechelle,

Welcome to Tech Support Forum!

I apologize for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, I will be glad to help.

OK, let?s do this first.

Did you, or anyone you know, install WinPCap (Windows Packet Capture) into your machine?

Please download ComboFix by sUBs:

NOTE: In the event you already have ComboFix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop.
Double-click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION:
Please do NOT mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Also, please do NOT adjust your time format while ComboFix is running.

NEXT:

Please reboot your computer normally into Windows, and then please post the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log.

A:BIG problem: "error applying transforms" & Windows Installer Util WON'T INSTALL

I installed both the software that came with my Palm Treo 650 and the latest Palm Desktop from Palm. Neither is 100% compatible with Vista. This is what I found works best for me. You account has to be an administrator and uac has to be enabled. Hotsync won't work if you disable uac for some reason. Uninstall whatever version you have installed now. Start Windows Explorer and make sure you can view hidden and system files. Navigate to the Palm folder in the virtual virtual store. On my computer it's here:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\palmOne

Delete the palmOne folder. Insert the CD that came with your Palm. Don't proceed with the autorun. Navigate to the folder where the language appropriate setup.exe is. Right click on it. On the Compatibility tab set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 and to Run as administrator. Double click the setup.exe to run it. The initial sync may fail fail during the install. If this happens just continue with the installation. Once the install is finished right click the Hotsync icon in the System Tray and pick Setup. Set Hotsync for manual start. In Windows Explorer navigate to the Palm folder in Program Files. Right click Hotsync.exe and set compatibility mode to XP SP2 and set to Run as administrator. Reboot. You will have to start Hotsync manually. If you try to start it automatically it will be blocked because of the Run as administrator setting. You should now be able to sync to the Palm Desktop. If you want to sync to Outlook the procedure is different. You will also get a uac prompt everytime you start the Hotsync.exe. You will also get many uac prompts during the setup.

Hello:

I have an annoying problem: each time windows (XP Home SP2, with latest updates to it and IE6) starts up, I have to wait a few minutes while the Windows Installer runs several times. Nothing happens and, after a few minutes, Windows is OK.

For the life of me, I can't figure this out. I know that I have occasionally seen questions about this issue in the forum, but I can't find any topic that fits my current situation.

I have run Hijack This and, as far as I can tell, nothing is untoward.

Any help would be very welcome,

A:windows installer at startup

It's probably just the exe. file left on your startup registry file and can be deleted. That should correct your problem.

A:Windows Installer at startup

Download this tool to remove that Windows Installer message.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad.

Before you do anything else, create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=61 ). Make sure to close any internet browsers that may still be open.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O16 - DPF: {062039B4-50E3-50EC-D57E-7AC26EB241C1} - http://85.255.113.214/1/gdnUS2296.exe

Restart your computer.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Hi I hope this is is in the right thread I already posted in software but was unable to find the solution I have also posted on the microsoft forum with no luck Basically I am unable to install anything with msi windows installer package I will get error messages like 'There is a problem with this windows installer package A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run installer .msi 1723 with to a anything Error - Unable install Contact your support personnel or package vendor' OR 'Installation directory must be on a local hard drive' Even though it is When it does give me an error code it is always Its not with any specific software I'm having trouble with For example I tried installing Acrobat Quicktime Rhinoceros d software and T-splines plugin for Rhinoceros all of which got an error and had msi installers so I think its safe to assume its not the software but Error 1723 - Unable to install anything with a .msi installer a problem with my computer I have checked all the installers on another computer and they work Things I've tried so far sfc scannow Microsoft fix it tool Checked the status of windows installer in Services It was running The only thing I have come Error 1723 - Unable to install anything with a .msi installer close to is using 'run as admin' with quicktime as it was the only program which allowed that option as an msi This actually worked and was able to override the DLL error somehow and install quicktime Any help is really appreciated

A:Error 1723 - Unable to install anything with a .msi installer

I am guessing that it is the problem of windows installer. For windows 7, it is the installer version 5, and that is not available to download. It is built in windows 7.

Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If it fails, try Repair Install.

A:WIndows Installer Always Runs on Startup

You should use the windows installer clean up utility.check this post with a detailed explanation

I have recently changed my setting under msconfig ( System Configuration Utility). I set it to normal start up. And after i rebooted, the windows installer dialog box always pops up every time i startup the computer. I press cancel and it will close but then after a few seconds, it will appear again. It appears around 3-4 times. I changed the settings to selective start up again and unchecked some of the services from the start up tab but i still have the problem. How do i resolve this?

A:Windows installer pops up at startup

Normal Startup vs Selective Startup:
If you use the msconfig utility to access the Startup menu and make changes on that menu, you will need to remain in Selective Startup. The nag message that comes up after the reboot following these changes, suggest that Selective Startup is only a diagnostic mode and you should return to Normal Mode.

This is not entirely accurate. Remaining in Selective Startup is the only way to keep the changes. Virtually every program installed on a PC comes with it on the Startup menu and very few programs are actually needed to start at boot. They are the antivirus program, firewall, touchpad for laptop and network processes if on network. The rest can be called up when needed.

Services vs Processes:
The msconfig utility Startup menu deals with processes. Services is an entirely different category. Services can also be customized for settings of Automatic, Manual or Disabled, with care taken to check the Dependency tab of each Service. Here is help with Services:
http://www.ss64.com/ntsyntax/services.html
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

When you have finished customizing the Startup menu using msconfig, click on Apply> OK> Reboot> Close the nag message after checking 'don't show this message again'.

IF you have checked a process to now start at boot and are now getting the installer message, it is possible that the program for that process has not been correctly or fully installed. If that is the case, a reinstall of that program is recommended.

Every time I boot my laptop, Windows Installer eventually starts up and asks me to insert a CD for Fax. I have to cancel this three times, and then it goes away. It isn't affecting performance but I have no idea why it is asking me to do this, does anyone know how I can make it stop?

Could it be something to do with RegCure, which I downloaded recently, I don't recall this happening before I ran that program?

Thanks

A:Windows Installer Dialog Box During Startup

Hi .

Adobe puts a few unwanted items on systems...I recall the update/download manager was an irritant for me.

It's possible that installing your program resulted in a startup item being placed on your system...and some part of Adobe install failed (for whatever reason). I see a reference to a "viewer" and that's essentially what Adobe Reader is.

Have you checked the Adobe forums?

Actually...if I used Adobe Reader, I would just uninstall it and reinstall it and see what happens. If that fails, I would try the Adobe forums.

This is happening each and every time and i want to remedy this problem

A number of new applications have recently been added and unused applications removed, so i think this may well be what the cause of this is

Please help me with this one

A:Windows Installer on xp pro Startup/Boot

Something is trying to install on boot, and failing.

MS publishes a tool called "Windows Installer Clean-up Utility" or similar, and I'm pretty sure it's purpose is to fix problems like this.

Check Event Viewer, it should say what it is that is trying to install on boot.

What's the last thing you tried to install ?

If it's in Add/Remove Programs, uninstall it, then reinstall after a reboot.

Hello:
Every time my system does a startup, Windows Installer opens up and attempts to install Microsoft Money Express. This is not a program I have ever used to my knowledge. The install fails so the installer continues to attempt the install. The only way I can stop the process is to control/alt/delete and end the task. Ths isn't a disaster--but its annoying. Anyone know a quick fix??

Thanks, Dave1846

Well hello everyone.. I'm a new member and signed up because of this problem..
Here it is:
At startup, Windows Installer pops up and it tries to install something into the computer. then, a security message pops up saying "An unidentified program wants access to your computer". The program is by "Unidentified Publisher". Everytime it asks for permission, I deny it access for fear of virus/malware.
The problem is:
I DON'T KNOW what it is, where it comes from or who published it. It pops up at EVERY startup. It's annoying but at the same time scary. What if it is a crucial update or something?? What if it's a virus??

Waiting for a solution. Still denying access.

Thx

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility can help with installers running at startup

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

It may help remove that installer from starting up however you would have to know the name of the installer you're looking for. When you install the CleanUp Utility it will show you a large list of installers and you'd want choose the one that's starting up with Windows.

Hope it helps you.

Hi all.

Running XP Media Centre Edition, SP2.

I get a Windows Installer dialog pop up 2-3 times during startup, "Preparing to install ..." (or something similar, it's too quick to read TBH).

I uninstalled .Net Framework 3 after reading that CardSpace was something to do with it, because I was also getting periodic CardSpace errors (the "Send/don't send report to MS" variety) so I guessed the two things might be related. But apparently not; the Windows Installer issue persists.

So, anyone know how I can identify what's causing the Windows Installer pop-up? It's an annoyance rather than a problem, but quite an annoying one all the same -- the comp ain't exactly super-fast to boot as it is.

TIA,
bomb

A:Windows Installer dialog during startup

I had a similar problem a while back and, at least on my system, two actions corrected it.

1. Ran chkdsk.

2. In command prompt, unregistered and reregistered msiexec.

msiexec /unregister

msiexec /regserver

You may not have the same problem I was having so it may not work for you. What the heck, may be worth a shot.

Is there a way I can prevent this from popping up? It started happening last reboot.

I've already tried system restoring. The last thing I did was uninstall a few programs. I googled this problem and it turns out it has something to do with my HP printer. I ended the HP task and the installer was gone too.

I recently had a problem detailed in this thread:

which was solved by running ComboFix. However, now every time I log in, Windows Installer tries to install drivers for my old Wingman joystick, and asks for a disk which I threw away ages ago, along with the joystick itself. How do I stop it from doing so?

For the last 3 weeks or so, everytime I boot up, the Windows Installer screen opens telling me it is trying to install a program that is already installed,(usually driver for HP 4110 printer drivers). If I don't cancel it immediately, eventually an error screen appears telling me the file I'm seeking is not available and to insert the installation CD. I've tried re-installing the drivers by inserting the CD, but then an error message appears saying the drivers are already installed. This is getting frustrating?
Any suggestions? I'm running Windows 2000 Pro.
Thanks, Roger

I've searched the threads and tried what others have tried without success, so started a new thread. Please re-direct if necessary. Some time ago I tried to get access to a 32gb stick that came back as "write protected" (without success) and in the process attempted to download some drivers for it from a "search for drivers" prompt. Since then Windows installer starts up every time I turn on my computer saying "the software you are installing for this hardware -Generic volume- has not passed windows logo testing" with an option to continue or stop installation. If I stop or continue, a dropbox appears saying the software couldn't be installed, click finish to close.
I'm using XP with SP3, 2 HDD's, 2gb ram on an Asus mb.

You do not need any drivers for USB devices.
Go to Start/run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. After the Windows Installer is cancelled or fails, in the Device Manager, do you see any devices with yellow flags? If so, for what device?

After a security patch was installed by Windows, the Windows Installer runs every startup, never completes...and is almost impossible to kill or cancel. I tried system restore but it won't accept the 1 restore point before the patch, so no help there. I don't see anything obvious in Task Manager to track down, but may be easily missing something in the long list of processes.

Suggestions most appreciated how to resolve this.

A:Windows Installer runs every startup and never completes

I encountered a similar issue when I first got Windows 8. A good first step would be to use Microsoft's 'FixIt' utility for Windows Update if you haven't already. What ended up working for me was a refresh of the system; not a complete restore.

Hello Cosmo313 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.ccCommon is part of Symantec's security products. It sounds like either the package is damaged or there is an update that is trying to install. You will either need to let it install, or, if it is damaged and cannot install, uninstall whatever Symantec products are currently installed and then reinstall them fresh or go to a different security application. If you need help with uninstalling/reinstalling the AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods forum can assist with that.Cheers.OT

Every now and again when i boot up my laptop and after entering my password. Rather than saying Welcome i get preparing desktop.
When this first happened i got the plain blue desktop with none of my icons. It was not long after a windows update so i system restored to before this update and it appeared to fix the problem.

Its done it again recently despite no updates. However now it seems to take ages to create a desktop.

Rebooting my laptop seems to solve the problem but this is rather inconvenient.

Any solution would be appreciated however i'm not that technically minded so keep it simple if possible. A step by step process would be great.

That situation is perfectly normal. Anytime modifications are made to key desktop components it prepares the desktop.

Unless it is an extraordinarily long delay its normal.

So after I did a repair install of XP for a previous problem I went to Windows Update. It said I needed to install Windows Installer 3.1 to continue. Instead of saying it was done, it said it was unable to install. Then I downloaded the file manually and went to install. It said something about not having permissions, or access denied. I thought it was because my system restore was screwed up, but that's now fixed, so I don't know what the problem is now.

A:Windows Installer 3.1 Won't Install

Are you administrator? If the permissions are screwed up, go into the Control panel and make sure you're an admin.

Hi

Ever since I upgraded to the XP Service Pack 2, I've had nothing but problems. The most annoying of which being Windows Installer/InstallShield won't install anything. It appears like it will install, then stops when it says 'Configuring Windows Installer', then I get this message '1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime'

I have checked out the support at the InstallShield website. They address the issue on the site, but none of the solutions help.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any possible solutions.

Thanks in advance.

Trying to install a Silverlight Update, a Java update or other software, I get this window:

What could be the problem ?

A:Windows Installer won't let me install

Go to Control Panel | Programs and Features and uninstall Silverlight entirely, then go to microsoft and download the silverlight package and install it. I have had to do this a few times already, and it is annoying.

The same goes for the Java 6 Update 18.

A:Windows installer kicks in on startup and causes Blue Screen Of Death, VPN Client

Try booting into Safe Mode again and do a START---ALL PROGRAMS---ACCESSORIES---System Tools---System Restore. Pick a date prior to the VPN client installs and restore via a reboot to that state hopefully. We use Shrewsoft's VPN Client at work and it is Windows 7 compliant.

I've been trying to sort out a problem that's developed recently whereby, during Windows Startup I get some instances of the Windows Installer dialog box being displayed.

The dialog box is labeled 'Windows Installer' in the box it says 'Preparing to Install' and there is a 'Cancel' button in the lower right of the box. This appears to be a standard Installer dialog except that no program is mentioned as the program being installed. They last only a few seconds and then disappear.

I have run all spy/mal/virus scans with various programs and my system appears to be clean.

It has been suggested to me to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, but, I don't know what program to cleanup after.

Any suggestions on where to proceed next?

Thanks, _corsair

Am I suppose to be Sorry I haven't downloaded SP2 ?

According to what I have found in the Information property above,(scrsht), and when directed to the MS web site regarding this the solution to starting the firewall which would not have started, if installeing SP2, I would have my hands full.
and be way over my head in technical jargon in fixing this.

Can anyone give me some insight concewrning the many problems I will encounter concerning updating my system to SP2.

I inserted an image (scrsht) but am not sure where it is, hope that it shows up in the post.

The main thing to be sure of, before updating to SP2, is that your computer is free of any type of spyware/malware/viruses.That will definitely screw up the installation of SP2.Other than that, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. How to take and share a screen shot in Windows

You can`t be connected to the net when installing a system, but have your network drivers ready, if windows doesn`t have the driver, beforehand so you can get to the net after the install.

Have you tried re-installing the OS? Did this problem occur with a fresh install?

OK, so I just reloaded XP SP2 onto my computer and know I'm doing windows updates and Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) will not install. It always fails. It tells me to restart, so I restart and still no luck.

I recently purchased software that requires that various Microsoft components be installed, including Microsoft Installer (MSI) version 4.5. I have tried to download the MSI 4.5 (WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe file) from Microsoft website but it will not install and leaves me with my current MSI version 3.1. During install of MSI 4.5 I get an "access denied" error, then computer undoes the changes and restarts leaving me with the MSI 3.1.

What would cause my system to not allow for the MSI 4.5 version to replace the 3.1, This is leaving me unable to install my recent software purchase.

I have Windows XP SP3/32 bit.
Thank you for your courtesies in helping me.

when i try to install/uninstall, i get a message service could not be accessed.

i followed a link from here and have checked the location of the msiexec.exe file and the path/value is correct in the registry.

but i have 2 msiexec.exe files, 1 in w\sys32, the 3.1 version and 1 in w\spf\i386.

could having 2 files be part of the problem?

I reinstalled windows XP home edition with SP2 on my laptop and since then, the automatic update promts me to install Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.
I hit install and after trying to install it, it says it was unsuccesfull....

Do I need to install this update? And if so, HOW?

If I don't, how do I stop it from showing up on the automatic update?

A:Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 Won't Install

Hello,That is an interesting error. If automatic updates refuses to instal the file, you should try instaling it manually. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en this is a link to the windows instaler page. Also, to stop an update showing in your update list, simply expand the update in question by clicking the plus sign and select the check box saying a variation of exclude from future searches.

I had an issue with the .MSI Windows Installer (imbedded in Windows 7).

I followed some bad advice and deleted via Regedit. Windows Installer 5.0 is NOT available for download as a stand alone program.

So I'm pondering doing a Repair Install.

Will doing so Reinstall the Windows Installer Program ?

A:Will a Repair Install Fix the Windows Installer 5.0 ??

Yes it should seeing as its a windows file.
Repair install replaces the Windows files from the disc.

I was having problems installing Adobe Reader 9.2 (had previous version[s]) so I downloaded the Windows Installer Clean Up Setup (was supposed to take care of the problem). I can't even it install it itself though! Any idears? Using 64-bit Home Vista if makes a difference.

P.S. I can't even quit the WICUS installer to boot.

Hi,

We have a W2k server SP4. running Windows install (msi.dll - 3.1.4000.2435)

Something has happened that now prevents us running MSI installs. Basically nothing happens, no errors or anything in the event log except this when I have to manually kill the msiexec.exe

"The Windows Installer service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action. "
We've installed the latest windows installer, we've tried reinstalling sp4 but not luck.

any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Ok Ive had this problem for about 2 weeks now.
Hardly anything will install without crashing. Im downloading what should be the correct installers of many things like java, shockwave and a lot more applications and they all crash within the first few stages within the installer and I get the error report thing. Same with AIM... It messes up 90% of the time I open it but it managed to install. MSN wont install either.
BUT ironicly. Every single VST and VSTi (theyre just plugins for music creation software... .ddls) Ive installed work - same with all my music apps.

One thing I tried was reinstalling windows installer. No luck - it did install but everything still messes up.

Im running XP SP2 on this machine simply because everything should work on it. Its the Professional 2002 version. I have 2GB of ram and a Q6600 quad core(this may be causing the problem, I dunno)

Thanks

Gingamo here again, and it seems that Win XP Pro SP2 Upgrade has gone a missing. I know it installed, as I saw the pop up on my desktop when it did; but I checked a few minutes ago, and its GONE, where did it go? Anyway, one less item to worry about, (knock on wood)! Now my Win Installer refuses to Install or Un Install ANYTHING, and this is really FRYING my ***.
The following error message appears: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. Contact Support Personnel" Contacted Micro BG Soft, and they are dumb founded ! No B.S.! They have no idea, whats wrong! Can anyone out there, offer any help in this area. It has something to do with my missing RPC Server, that much I was able to off the WEB.

I'm having trouble with the windows installer. Everything I have read says "easy to fix in 2 minutes" and the first thing you have to do is download the fix it program. Well, guess what? I can download it but I can't install it! Imagine that! Can anyone help me around this situation?

A:windows 7 installer, if I can't install I can't download the fix!

Try this :

Quote:

Delete all temporary files.

a. Restart the computer.
b. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer, or double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
c. Click anywhere in the Address bar to select it. (If you do not see the Address bar, then right-click the blank area to the right of Help. On the menu that appears, click Address bar.)
d. Type %temp% and then press Enter:
e. The Temp folder for the currently logged-on user displays.
f. In most cases, you can safely delete the contents. If you are not sure, then copy any files or folders to a different location. To delete the contents, click the Edit menu, and then click Select All.
g. Press Delete, and then click Yes if prompted to confirm.

See if it helps.

You don`t repair your windows installer, you either buy a new one, or you download the iso file of the version you need and burn it to dvd.

On my Windows 7 Home Premium Computer, I am unable to install anything that uses Windows installers.

I have already tried the following
-msiexec /unregister
-msiexec /register
-Replacing the windows installers files (msi.dll msihnd.dll, and msiexec.exe) with my Windows 7 Ultimate System Files.

Any suggestions?

A:Windows Installer Will not install programs.

Welcome to Seven Forums DevPump.

Your statements are confusing. Are you trying to install software with the programs' setup.exe file? What matrerial do you need to reformat?

Try running SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker.
Also System Restore

I cannot download any update due to the Windows Installer 3.1 for XP will not install. I get the 0x8ddd0007 Error stating the "Windows Installer was not installed." Then I am direct to restart my system to fix the problem. This does nothing and I am in a loop of restarting and still not getting Windows Installer to install. I can not get any updates until this problem is solved. I would rather someone help me to fix this problem without me having to Reformat my Hard Drive and do a complete new installation of WindowsXP. So, if anyone has a real answer to remedy this, I would appreciate your assistance. Thank you . . . HELP!!!

After booting up and loading the desktop, icons, etc., I get a window that says Windows Installer is installing something, then configuring something called "Photogallery". While this is going on, I get another window saying something about Norton not supporting the repair function and to uninstall and reinstall. If I go to Norton, though, there appears to be nothing wrong with it.

Does anyone know what the heck this is about? I've tried a couple different programs to get rid of junk and fix the registry, hoping that would get rid of whatever it was, but it hasn't.
