Q: Random lockups with new build

The problem is that it randomly locks up where i cant do anything besides power down by the case button. This problem has only come up in Battlefield bad company 2. I have played GTA IV, just cause 2 and tf2 for hours with out problems. was wondering what could be the problem.

Edit: system temps at time of lock up.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok, so I built a friend a Core i7 920 based system.

here are the specifics:

Core i7 920
ASUS P6T Motherboard
6GB OCZ DDR3 Memory
Corsair 750W PSU
300GB Velociraptor Wstern Digital HDD
PNY GTX 285 Video Card
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Sometimes, at random times, idle or in use, the PC will lockup, hard. Mouse/Keyboard unresponsive, nothing. Have to power off the machine and reboot.

Event Viewer isnt showing much... is there anything else I can check to see what might be causing this?

Also, havce tried a format and fresh install...no luck.

Testing shows stable (No overclocking at all!) Temps are fine (35-40Deg Celcius) and runs Prime95 without a hiccup, and does not fail. Ran last night for 30 mins straight, no lockup, then went to dinner, come back and its locked up hard.

Upload the minidump to Rapidshare and post it. I'll have a look. If I can't help, possibly others can. H2S04 seems good with this kind of thing.

For a couple weeks now my computer has been locking up on me. I'll be playing a game or surfing the web and my screen will lock up. and the backlighting on my keyboard/mouse will go out. None of the fans/lights inside my case change, and the only way to get it running again is to unplug it, wait about 10 minutes, then plug it in and boot up.

After the problem started happening, I put a new motherboard, cpu, ram, and a different video card in there, and it's still doing the same thing.

My guess is the PSU, but I want to get another opinion on it before I go drop the cash on a new one.

Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
Mobo: Jetway MA760TMHGV2
RAM: CORSAIR 4GB DDR3 1333
GPU: EVGA GTX 260
PSU: oczgsx700
Vista x64 (fresh install)

For some reason I can't edit my first post, but my OS is Win7 64bit Ultimate, not Vista, however the problem started when I had Vista installed.

Also, the lockups used to be hours apart, now they're happening as soon as windows starts to load. It wasn't having the problem when I started in Safe Mode.

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. I have a weird problem. Windows randomly freezes/locks.. The HDD led on my case stops with blinking and my screen freezes. What i find really weird is that when this happens, my mouse (razer deathadder) and my keyboard (logitech g15) stop working AND the light's in them go off. Like they dont get power anymore.. The same what happens when you put your pc to sleepmode. I really have no idea what it could be. The HDD returned positive on all test in hdtune pro.

It really happens random. Sometimes I can play games for hours (sc2 etc.) without freezing one time, than I'm gone for like 15 minutes and it freezes...

All help is welcome!

My system specs:
Intel Core i5 2500k
8GB corsair vengeance 1600mhz
MSI P67A-GD65
Samsung F3 1tb HDD (7200rpm)
Corsair AX850

That could be a sign of a failing PSU or a faulty motherboard. It may also possibly be related to the well-known issue with the chipset on your board. I haven't seen anyone actually complain about it yet, but since the issue is apparently quite serious, maybe they will start popping up. That being said, are you using the 6 GBps SATA ports on your motherboard? If so, you shouldn't have to worry.

You could also check your memory out, but that wouldn't explain the loss of power to peripherals. Is your BIOS up to date? Are you overclocking? You left out a lot of troubleshooting steps that you may have done already, so some of what I said may be redundant.

Hey, I started having a problem with my computer a few weeks ago in which my monitor would shut off, and it sounded like a fan was either being turned off or slowed down. I opened the tower and that is not the case. This literally happens every 15 minutes, and the ONLY way to shut the computer off is to pull the plug. No commands will work when the computer is locked up, and I can't even hold the power button down to shut it off. I really have NO clue what is going on. I'll post my specs, and if anyone can give any sort of advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi Guys nbsp Only week ago I purchased a Compaq Presario CQ - AX from a local electrical retailer However the minute I took the laptop out of the box and turned it on I had issues with random lockups etc I checked Random Lockups online for answers with very limited success So I checked the event viewer and the error message came up as nbsp Reset to device Device RaidPort was issued Source amdsataEvent ID nbsp There are multiple entries of this warning which all Random Lockups coincide with the laptop freezing up When it does lock up I can move the mouse and switch Random Lockups between windows but everything stops responding for about minutes nbsp nbsp The general answer I got from online seemed to be that changing the RAID controller in the BIOS from AHCI to IDE should solve it with very little in the way of performance loss However I see no option in the BIOS to do so nbsp Anyone got any ideas nbsp Solved View Solution

I was getting this error on an HP g62 435dx.  I tried a number of driver updates, updated to the new bios ... no luck. Finally, I changed the sata driver from the amdsata to the generic windows 7 ahci driver and it seems to have fixed the problem. If you want to try it, go to Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers->Sata Driver.  Choose "Update Driver"->"Browse my computer for Driver Software"->"Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" and then choose the "Standard AHCI 1.0" driver.   Note: I haven't done an A/B comparison on hard drive performance between the two drivers but there has been no noticeable change in performance (CrystalDiskMark gives me about 80 MB/s which, it seems to me, is fine for a 5400 rpm drive). Anyway, good luck.

My Problem:
For the last few weeks my computer suffers from Random Lock-ups.
I have made the following test:

Memtest-more than 3 passes.
HD Tests with the manufactor's diagnostic utilities: Data Lifeguard and Seatools.
I have tested the computer with only a single Memory chip at a time(3 Mem Chips), but the lockups still happen
I have made full formats on both hard drives and made a clean install of XP SP2
I have used Passmark BurnInTest, and couldn't finish the tests due to lockups.
I have opened the case in order to put a real Fan(big one) outside the case.

I am currently out of Ideas what can be the problem: Heat Related, PSU, CPU, Motherboard or something else.

Hi DND and welcome to TSF !

Please test your old memory sticks with memtest86+ and windiag to see if they're not faulty. Download, unzip and burn memtest86+'s bootable .iso image file using a burning software that can handle .iso files. Enter the BIOS at startup and set the boot priority to CD-rom first. Leave memtest run overnight or at least do 3 full passes on your memory. It's advised that you test one memory stick at a time, removing the others from their slot. Report if it finds any error and double-check memtest's results with windiag as it runs different tests.

IMHO that Ezycool power supply is crap. 500W PSU's don't sell at less than 30$. If you find that your older memory sticks are faulty the power supply may be what damaged them. See this thread for more information :
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f70/...on-107466.html

Download and install sensorsview pro (fully functional 21 days trial) and see what it says about your temperatures, fan speeds and voltages. Do the voltages seem to fluctuate somewhat ? Post a screenshot of those readings here. To take a screenshot press the print screen (or prt scr) key on your keyboard then go to start => all programs => accessories => paint, click edit => paste and save as a .jpg. Attach the image to your next post using the manage attachments button from advanced mode.

Go to the event viewer : start => run => eventvwr.msc. Search the different sections there for errors related to the times of your lockups. Double-click the error and use the third button on the right to copy the info in the clipboard then paste it here.

BUGCHECK_STR: 0x4E_99
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT (4e)
Probably caused by : memory_corruption

Possible solution: Download and run memtest from www.memtest.org for a minimum of 7 passes. Please note ther are several tests performed per pass.

It may be best to test the ram 1 stick at a time instead of all at once. After you have tested all the ram please post back and let us know the outcome.

Please note that faulty ram can sometimes pass memtest

baddew: Note for all; if memory problem shows up under bugcheck and the memtest does not show errors, run the test in safe mode. I did this and the errors that never showed up in normal mode popped up like minnows after food. http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic113909.html sourceClick to expand...

I initially had Vista x with SP and it would randomly lock up It started last Wednesday Knowing Tuesday was patch day I Lockups Random rolled back to Random Lockups a previous Restore Point Still got Random Lockups the lockups Did a little research and read that Random Lockups SP was causing this with certain hardware that they mistaken released it early for x folks So i reinstall vista x and with all the patches I'm still getting it My mobo is less then a month old evga i I did a memory check about a month ago and everything was fine I doubt it's the SB X-fi or the gtx because it was freezing and I didn't even have the drivers installed yet I think it's hardware and suspecting either my Coolermaster watt power supply which is a year old or maybe my new Mobo I also checked cpu temps and they tend to hover about - C with no load It freezes with load or no load Any thoughts at what i can try It's just random sometimes it woudl be hours before it locks up sometimes just minutes

Western Digital 80GB
Maxtor 160GB

I have an intermittent problem. I hate this kind of problem... I built my CPU myself 2 years ago. Sometimes, maybe once a month, maybe once a week, my computer will freeze. and I have no choice but to do a hard shutdown. This usually happens when I am not using it and there are no programs running. I'm having trouble pinpointing the source of the issue. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello, I am having a problem on Windows XP.

At any random time, the computer totally locks up. Can't move the mouse, CTRL ALT DEL or anything. No error messages at all, it just plain stops. It usually happens when an Explorer window is open (My Computer, Internet Explorer, any kind of folder), but it's also happened while just at the desktop.

This problem has only occurred since we last reformatted our Hard Drive. Before reformatting we were running XP as well.

My specs are as follows.

AMD Duron 850MHz
40Gig Western Digital Hard Drive
GeForce 4 MX/440
Hercules Fortissimo Gamesurround II
512 MB RAM (Two sticks of 256)

I would really appreciate any feedback. If its possible I want to try and solve this without reformatting... Because backing up lots and lots of MP3s and other stuff is a major pain. Otherwise I would do it.

Thanks again

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, but have been having quite serious hardware issues for the last couple of months. If I leave the system idle it usually locks up after anywhere between 5 and 60 minutes. Strangely the only way I've managed to keep the system from locking is by having a video playing in VLC media player. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem?

Ever since I installed the ATI xpert 128, I have been having lockups. I am almost certain that the card is causing the lockups because they only appeared after I installed the card, and they disappear if I set the 3D acceleration to none.

I am running the newest drivers, have checked for conflicts, and have even reinstalled Windows. Nothing seems to help.

I have a chance of running into a lockup if I run Internet Explorer, or play certain games. When running other games, the computer will lock up after a certain time period. (Along the lines of 5 seconds)

A:Random lockups

Hi,

This could well be software related, drivers or something to do with your OS setup.

No doubt, a lot of members will give you suggestions about that.

But I had a similar problem with random lockups on my system. That ended up being a 4-page post here.

Took 8 months of hard work to pin the problem down to the mainboard hard disk connector/controllor.

So if the lockups are happening when the hard drive is having to work hard (like with my system), that means the hdd controller might be the problem.

One more thing - it'll be easier for people to give you suggestions if you post a detailed description of you Hardware and software setup - CPU, mainboard manufacturer, chipset, ram, drives, etc...
Best Regards
Kit

Over the last two days I have had four system lockups not BSODs I have been using the system normally and then the screen goes a single solid colour seems to be related to what is open so went green one time when I had Freecell open although this was not the active window and the disk Random lockups system light comes on I am unable to access the system through the keyboard and I lose access to the drives etc from another machine So far I have left it for minutes before having to press the power button to close it down I've checked all the logs in eventvwr and there are no error messages relevant to the time of the lockup although on two of the four occassions there are error messages for the CDROM but they are at least half an hour in advance of the failure I've scanned for viruses with no result and checked the disks with no errors CPU and MB temperatures are slighly Random system lockups up but well within limits and consistent with the room being hot The system has not been updated recently and there have been no hardware changes for months and no dump is being produced as techically it is still running I'm running Windows IE and McAfee antivirus and firewall the graphics is an onboard Nvidia all are fully patched The machine is an AMD quad core with Gb Random system lockups memory The system is not overclocked I'm not sure what info to provide so if anybody has an idea what this might be or wants further info please let me know Thanks in advance

Been getting BSODs and lockups at random past few months, usually only once a day at max, though today I've locked up twice and figured time to try and get to the bottom of it. It seems like this happened after a driver update for my graphic card a few months ago (v320 or something like that, honestly can't remember for sure) and would just get black screens whenever tried to play Just Cause 2 and rolled driver back in order to be able to play the game. And ever since then have been getting the BSODs/lockups. Have tried different versions of nvidia drivers trying to fix this issue to no avail, clean installing every time. Not very tech savvy so figured this best place to go to get any help if possible.

A:BSODs and random lockups

Hi Neo42.

Seeing a lot of drivers as failing, I will want to see two things at first.

One, as it is not very likely to fail so many of drivers at once, test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.
If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Two, it becomes a must to see your system setup; but the MSINFO32.nfo file that you uploaded is corrupt. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file once again.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Then we will be able to proceed with the troubleshooting.

Hello,

I am working on a computer that keeps locking up. I have checked the event viewer and it seems that it has an issue with the nvstor and throws and error message. I think it maybe hardware related but want to be sure that there is not a virus/malware problem going on here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The log seems indicative of corrupt system files, namely the kernel (not a good thing).

Do you have a Windows 7 installation disk?

A:Problem with random lockups.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

My initial thoughts are a possible failing / failed graphics card or a problem with the motherboard. From what you describe I would lean toward the graphcs card initially. The problem with the mouse may have been pure coincidence!

Is this a 'big brand' PC like HP, Dell etc? If so, what is the exact make and model, include the 7 digit Dell Service Tag number if its a Dell.

If its a self / custom build could you also provide the make, model and wattage of the power supply, make and model of RAM, etc.

Have you ever changed / upgraded any hardware since you got it?
How old is the PC?

Can you run DXDiag (Start then type "dxdiag" (without the quotes) in the Run box (at the bottom) and hit return. When the window opens click the 'Save All Information' button on the bottom right corner and save the file to your desktop. Then copy and paste the contents of that file (will be quite big) into a reply here.

Hi all, hope you can help me on this...

My 6 months old PC started to have frequent lock ups since last week. I originally suspected a problem update with the Nividia video driver from Windows Update and did an uninstall and fresh install. The look ups become less frequent, but it still happens.

A check in the Event Viewer, I noticed this message has been appearing since Feb 2010, and everyday now:

"The system could not successfully load the crash dump driver.

Log Name: System
Source: volmgr
Event ID: 45"

I had experienced occasional lockups when using Lightroom 2 since I have this PC, but I am getting more disturbed as the series of lockups is getting frequent.

Is this lock up directly related to some problems with my primary hard disk?

Hope someone can help me here. Thanks !

Sgxsun Hi and welcome

Please run a chkdsk as outlined below.

Also run a system file check - to do so type cmd in search, then right click it and run as admin, then type SFC /SCANNOW.

Thanks

Jan

CHKDSK /R /F:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Win7) (winlogon for XP).
Copy/paste the results into your next post.

I've had this system working fine for a year or so bit it is causing problems for a while now and it is getting really on my nerves. So to jump right in these are my specs:

Windows 7 home permium 64bit updated from vista
Intel core i7 920 2.67Ghz
6MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 275
Gigabyte EX58-UD4P

I have formated it still no luck.
It freezes at startup or later on seems random to me, I have Chrome, Skype/teamspeak and League of Legends running most of the time. When it freezes all sounds will repeat for a short time and then continue for about 5 seconds.

Help would be appriciated!

A:Random freezes/lockups

If formatting didn't do the trick and it's still causing problems for you, then it's most certainly hardware issues. It's just a matter of figuring out exactly what hardware it is.

I am unable to read the syslogs because they're in a different language, but I can use the two crashdumps. One reported your video card drivers (or video card itself) timing out. Note that this doesn't exactly mean there's a problem with it, as something else could've been holding them up. The other crashdump is a bit more interesting. It shows what appears to be a shift of two bytes in one of your CPU's registers. I cannot ascertain how this happened without access to at least a full kernel dump of the scenario. However, it does kinda lead me to believe it's hardware-based.

Here's a battery of tests you can use to try and narrow down cause:
RAM: Memtest86+ - 7+ passes
CPU: Prime95 - Torture Test; Large FFTs; overnight (9+ hours)
GPU: MemtestCL - Run twice (if any of the tests work on your GPU)
Drives: Seatools - All basic tests aside from the Fix all or the advanced ones.

All of these (excluding MemtestCL) are included in the UBCD if you prefer a Live CD environment (which is the best environment to test hardware on). Note that Prime95 currently does not work on the UBCD. Also, please provide us temps/voltages using HWInfo with Sensors only option checked. Log two 30-minute instances: one for idle, and one for high load. Preferably if you can get system to crash in high load let it log until crash.

Been getting bluescreens and lockups again, I used to have the same issue in '14 with my screen glitching out (seen below) before crashing or freezing. Back then I was able to fix it by uninstalling the drivers for my card and updating them, the problem disappeared till a couple of days ago. I suspect the issue is with the software though it could be a hardware issue as well. If someone could help me and take a look through the driver information as well at the recent bluescreens. I've also had a couple other bluescreens but it didn't create a minidump.

So far the crashes occur at random, whenever I'm playing a game or not. I'm fairly certain it's not the heat of the system as it usually stays around a comfortable 50?C/122?F when active.

Hi everyone Okay here goes this is gonna be a long one but I read to post as much detail as possible so I apologize in advance First I have a pretty good working knowledge of computers For the Random And Lockups Freezes most part I can rip em apart and put them back together At work we have a contracted IT person so when it comes to computer problems folks call me first If I can t figure out how to fix it or simply don t have the time then we call the IT guy This has me absolutely stumped and I ve been that way for about a Random Freezes And Lockups year Normally I ll keep digging and figure it out eventually My computer a few months ago started experiencing random freezes which will eventually lead to a complete lockup Also after about fifteen minutes of powering on the CD DVD RW will vanish from the Device Manager and it will not open when the button is pressed Only a reboot will bring it back Okay onto specifics first the freezes are characterized by a rapid bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrr sound while the mouse freezes and any program I am using locks for a few seconds This is not an quot error quot sound as when a key is depressed for some length of time but the noise is coming through the soundcard I wear headphones a lot and the sound is not always the same most often very different in pitch and volume I ve also heard sounds similiar to this when watching TV and getting interference on a digital level The freeze usually does not result in a lockup only when I m playing a computer game will it eventually lead to a lockup The CD DVD RW disappearance does not seem to be related to this as in timing although I think these events are related as a whole The CD DVD RW dissappears a few minutes after I power on the computer it doesn t matter if the freeze happens or not If I m using it playing a game it will stay on If I leave the game and jump on the internet or go to another program it will vanish Of course I ve done the usual stuff First I checked for viruses - found some suspicious cookies but this didn t solve the problem Then I checked for spyware malware - found some suspicious programs gamespy for my online gaming but didn t solve the problem Then I ran my registry cleaner - cleaned up a few items but didn t solve the problem Then I checked if I needed to defrag - don t need to defrag The system still does it Okay let s check the drivers firmware updates I was able to update everything EXCEPT that pesky CD DVD it s a PHILLIPS note I have a second drive DVD player but haven t had a single problem with it I can only find the firmware upgrade on the HP website where it says to burn a copy of it to a CD and reboot with the CD in the drive and follow the instructions when it fires up on the reboot WRONG it doesn t do a damn thing even when I force the system to look at that drive when it s booting I tried the standard update drivers through the Device Manager but that doesn t work either Just out of curiosity I ISO-busted the stupid thing It s a BIN file not an executable or INF So that s why I can t do anything with it After updating all the drivers firmware except for the PHILLIPS the computer still has random freezes and lockups So I call HP Tech support they had me re-seating the PHILLIPS running this and running that having me copy the upgrade file to a diskette a problem there since it s mg and won t fit on one floppy - not to mention I don t have a floppy drive on this computer and have to use a computer on my home network I gave up talking to them because every time I try something I have to call back or go back to live chat and start all over again with a different person But I ve attempted to solve the problem through them at least times No luck there So I m still looking for answers when I discover a program called Process Explorer I LOVE this thing It s like the Task Manager on steriods It gives you tons more info and I highly recommend it - I found it through PC Mag These freezes and lockups are so sporadic I can t defin... Hi Kat,Your post was very thorough and descriptive. I wish everyone would post like that. But while I was still reading it, hints started coming out from your post, and when I was finished... I believe it hit me hard. The one, and most obvious thing we never look for as the culprit is... the hard drive. You have all the signs that your hard drive is going to fail you, and probably sooner than you think.... if that's the cause. But from what I've read, that is the main suspect at hand. I guess you know you should back up the hard drive while you can.If you do backup your hard drive, repartition it, reformat it, and reinstall your OS and see if the problem happens again... if it does, it's definitely your hard drive, if it doesn't, then you probably had something on your computer that was infected. And if that's the case, then you should run a scan on the backup data, (if backed up on another hard drive) and see what comes up before transferring it back to your new OS.At this point, the problems you're having , redoing your hard drive and all of that is the 100% guaranteed way to know where your problem is or isn't. Most other methods will still have you guessing, causing you to have to do the reformat anyway. It may be a pain in the rear, but think of it like this.... your data is irreplaceable.Hope that helps!

i recently built a new computer not a month ago. lately its been proned to completely lock up on me, both when its under load and when its doing next to nothing. it locks up, no mouse movement but winamp will finish the song its on. also, after i reboot it i lose all settings/cookies that i was doing.

i think its related to:
a: overheating? ive seen my proc run as hot as 55C

b: some sort of software confllict, specifically trillian i think? although i just got the new patch that fixes crashes..

c: something to do with my motherboard overclock AI?

d: i also noticed my power supply fan runs around 1500 rpms. kinda low,but the symptoms dont seem to denote a power failure

system specs:

asus p4p800E deluxe
3.06 ghz pentium 4 HT, 800 mhz fsb, 1 mb L2 cache
ATi fireGL Z1 128 mb
1 gig 2700 ddr ram from crucial. soon to be 2 gigs

I am currently being helped by Gingo with a PC infected but I have another PC acting odd so I want random lockups Windows 8 to make sure first the PC is not infected Gringo has been great and the help here has been amazing I have a custom built PC which I upgared to Windows several months ago Here are the specs System -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Manufacturer BIOSTAR Group Model A XA-A T Total amount of system memory GB RAM System type -bit operating system Number of processor cores Storage SATA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total size of hard disk s GB Disk partition C GB Free GB Total Disk partition D GB Free GB Total Disk partition E MB Free MB Total Media drive F CD DVD Graphics -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Display adapter type ATI Radeon HD Series Total available graphics memory MB Dedicated graphics memory MB Dedicated system memory MB Shared system memory MB Display adapter driver version Primary monitor resolution x DirectX version DirectX Network -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Network Adapter Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller I had upgraded from Windows XP if I recall Windows 8 random lockups correctly to Window with a promotion Microsoft offered From what I can remember the PC was working fine we just did not use it a lot I installed installed some programs included antivirus etc At some point I noticed it was freezing Screen would shut off the power button would illuminate but I could not restart or do anything except I had to perform a hard shutdown and turn it back on I never saw any error messages I performed a bunch of hardware checks virus checks updated driver modified BIOS etc Nothing helped I decided to reinstall Windows onto a new harddrive The first drive I used was a GB IDE drive I had a drive from a broken laptop which had WIndows I was not sure MS would let me install but it did Now I have Windows on a new harddrive installed over Windows Same problems random lockups I disconnected and uninstalled the video card updated the drivers took out two sticks of RAM since they were slightly different from the other two I could boot into safe mode and it seemed to not lockup in safemode But it eventually did have one occur Don't think it is temp related fan works fine and the lockups are so random it could be ten minutes after startup or mins I had trouble updating Windows but I was eventually able to get it updated to the most current level This was very suspicious I downloaded and installed AVG antivirus and Malware antimalware but I had such a hard time getting this done it would frequently lockup while downloading and installing this programs I had to install them during safemode I ran those programs in safemode and nothing was found The only conflict I noticed is under the device manager the Raid device is marked but I don't use a RAID configuration I was concerned about IRQ and resource conflicts I made some changes but it never seemed to help So before I spend too much more time I want to make sure the PC doesn't have an infection Thank you Ed

Hi.

I'm experiencing random lockups on my Vista PC (system specs attached), which happens every 5-15 minutes. When it happens, 95% of the time it gets back to normal after 30-60 seconds, and 5% of the time I get a "display driver stopped responding and was restarted" message.

I changed my RAM, ran the Microsoft bootable memtest, (automatically) installed all the latest Windows updates, my display driver is up-to-date, disabled Aero, and the problem persists.

Anyone has any idea before I reinstall everything from scratch?

Thanks for any help,
JF

Hey guys, I'm having an issue where my system just locks up and refuses to respond. It can happen randomly while the computer is idle or while I'm actively using it. Even happened once right after boot when I was going through Windows Explorer.

Dump files are attached.

I'm not really sure what else to say other than that, any additional info I'll edit in later.

- x64 Ultimate (SP1)
- Original installed OS
- Full Retail
- Hardware around 2 years 4 months old.
- OS 5 months old.

EDIT: Might want to mention that I don't actually get a BSOD. The screen just freezes.

EDIT2: Event Viewer logs available on post #5

EDIT3: More Event Viewer logs available on post #10. I've also updated my LAN driver

A:Random lockups and freezing

No DMP's inc.
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

We could also use some system information, which you can get easily by running msinfo32. To do that go to start>run>type msinfo32>enter

When it is finished running go to file>save>name it and upload to us here.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

I hope this is the right section couldn't find lockups and Random frequent a better place to post this thread The problem Frequently my computer locks up for a moment but not completely and my computer doesn't crash It happens on average of at least once every or minutes however it does seem that if I'm doing something less intensive like Random and frequent lockups reading simple text online it happens somewhat less often but it definitely still happens and is still relatively frequent If sound is playing it will continue to play normally If a video is streaming one of two things will happen In one case the visual will lock up for - seconds and then pick up playing later in the video and in this case the sound will continue normally OR both the sound and video will Random and frequent lockups lock up at the same time and pick up where it left off after the freeze is over XP and other applications will be slow also I never lose control of the mouse cursor but things will become unresponsive If I'm writing in Microsoft Word I can keep typing through a lockup but the words will not appear until it's over with Similarly I can click on things in Firefox for example but the commands will not be processed until the lockup is over What I've tried This problem started on April th The night before my computer did a Windows XP update after turning it off When I woke up and turned the computer back on this problem began The first thing I did was system restore to April th This did not help I also moved some very large files from my C drive to my F drive but I don't remember exactly when I tried doing a disk check on the C drive it took much longer than normal and also tried defragmenting the drive which never finished after hours it only got to These things have not helped I've also tried running Spybot S amp D and it removed many things but it did not fix this problem I've had this computer for more than a year and I've never had this problem before gigs of RAM and a dual core processor That's all I can think of right now Help

Hi I built a new PC just under a year ago from individual parts that I bought mostly new It has been running Random BSODs lockups and fine with the very occasional lock-up Random lockups and BSODs and restart in games such as WoW and LOTRO However these random lock-ups have started to become more and more frequent over the last month and I have started to get random BSODs I recently did a format of my hard drives and re-installed Win Office GPU and sound card drivers and LOTRO I've still been getting the random lock-ups and random BSODs They generally only occur in a game but I've had the odd one when just web surfing Generally the game will suddenly freeze and my monitor will display what looks like a scrambled image of random pixels and colours and the sound stutters This is sometimes then followed by a BSOD Generally when I restart Windows will boot as normal although sometimes I get a BSOD or an error in the bios saying quot overclocking has failed quot I'm not actually overlocking anything I've left everything as factory clocked The only thing I changed in the bios to try and help the problem was to put the memory into ganged mode which hasn't helped I've followed the BSOD instructions and attached the zip file Some more info - x -bit or x x - the original installed OS on the system win x - an OEM or full retail version OEM bought with the components that I then built myself - - What is the age of system hardware just under year I built it last December - What is the age of OS installation have you re-installed the OS Yes re-installed about days ago Thanks very much in advance for any help you can give I've tried to diagnose the cause myself over the last week or so taking the GPU out and the sound card out etc but I've still not managed to find any root cause I'm thinking it may be a RAM problem but I've run memtest not for very long though just one pass and the Win boot memory test and they displayed no errors

Hey there,

I just built a new computer and I have had 2 random lock ups (not a bsod, but I can't move the mouse or toggle num/caps lock).

I have read into examining the dump files but can't seem to get it to work.

If anyone would please help me examine this file to determine the cause of lock ups, I would really appreciate it!

Just in case here are my System Specs:

Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
Intel i7 875 @ 2.93ghz
ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 P55
GSkill Ripjaw Series 8GB (2x4) DDR3 1333
XFX Radeon HD 5870

Also I am not sure if this is the appropriate time or place to ask; I am having problems with Windows or the motherboard (I'm not sure which is having trouble) recognizing the SATA Ports that my external HDs are plugged into.

Appreciative,
C. Marrs

Love to, but which file? none attached.

BTW if not a BSOD, you shouldnt have Dump files.

Hello First time poster thought I'd start off with a fun little problem Synopsis) Lockups (Odd Random I cannot seem to find a way around Specs nothing is overclocked Dell XPS CPU Intel Core Quad Q Mhz RAM GB DDR -SDRAM Mhz MB Dell TP Chipset Intel X PSU w Video Geforce GT mb w Forceware v Soundcard Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Random Lockups (Odd Synopsis) XtremeGamer didn't Random Lockups (Odd Synopsis) come with the system but the lockups occurred before when I was using the onboard The system came with Vista originally I've talked with Dell support about the issue and they recommended different things that I've already tried I didn't immediately think of returning the system at first as the specs were good the price was good and I consider myself a semi-advanced user and can usually stumble upon the solution to most computer issues although that kind of thinking for me usually leads to more problems This problem occurs with both Vista Home Premium latest updates and Windows XP Professional SP w latest updates Obviously the above sentence would imply a hardware issue but keep reading if you're still with me What happens is the system will suddenly start to lock itself up almost gradually It's as if something just suddenly sapped all the resources of the CPU and decided to hold it hostage Programs become unresponsive Ctrl Alt Del doesn't work My mouse cursor still responds with the hourglass icon spinning away but nothing else What's odd is that after - min of this the system will suddenly return to life along with everything I was trying to do during the lockup ie million windows open etc Another thing say I'm watching a movie prior to the lockup the movie will sometimes continue to play fine whilst everything else is locking up Eventually tho the movie begins to stutter and eventually ceases playback The time duration of the film continued one time but the video was in a frozen state But like I said - min later everything returns to normal The obvious things I've done are - Checked to make sure my drivers were golden Updated the BIOS updated Windows and all that good stuff - I made sure nothing was overheating All my fans are on and functioning and my GPU is idle around C and C when gaming movies CPU s are - C on average HD is C My tower has good ventilation - I've run memtest and everything passed I defragged ran scandisk and had nothing but green smiley faces all around I recently installed an update to my Intel Chipset software and so far it's been good for most of the day locked up once this morning before updating the chipset software Although I'm not entirely confident that doing so solved the issue It seems like it probably requires more than that if my history with technology proves true i have the worst luck I'm thinking it might be a rogue program somewhere The only one that comes to mind is Firefox latest verison but I did import a previously saved profile through MozBackup - perhaps corruption occurred as it does tend to crash often when multiple windows are open I've scanned through Google search results so many times for problems similar to mine and I see the random lockup posts people have made but I haven't yet seen one where the user's system returns to normal minutes later Usually it's a complete hard lock and they're forced to hold down their power button I'll most likely try to find some more advanced help from Dell's support but I thought I would throw in a post on some tech forums to get some opinions in the meantime Thanks for reading p

A:Random Lockups (Odd Synopsis)

hello & welcome to TSF,

what i would like you to do is follow this link

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-29890.html

and download sensor veiw / then post the results for your temps & volts

also

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)

then get back to us

Hi,

Before tackling this problem, I would like to see you talk about the brand name, watts, and listed amps on each rail for your power supply.

Also, would love to see both at-rest and under-stress temperatures for your unit.

The last thing before we get started would be to know what the voltage outputs are on each rail when the computer is running.

That information should give us a better foundation to find what the problem might be.

Hi all,

I am having a slight problem and I am trying to narrow down possibilities.

I had this issue previously with my GPU overheating which was causing graphical crashes / lockups ingames. I have since installed an aftermarket GPU heatsink with 90mm fan (Thermalright HR-03GT) and all was fine for weeks afterwards and under stress testing my GPU maxed out at 50-51C and CPU core temps are around 5-10C lower under load.

However, Recently it has crashed a couple of times in exactly the same way as it did previously. It is not regular and I haven't been able to recreate it on demand.

My system setup is in my info page at the top of my posts.

Any thoughts on what I can do / test / try to attempt to identify the source of the issue?

Many thanks

My stationary bootup/POST lockups & Random computer AMD dualcore is becoming increasingly unstable after Random lockups & bootup/POST having served me well for about years I suspect either the motherboard or the graphicscard is dying About a month ago I replaced Random lockups & bootup/POST the powersupply Everything was fine after that until now the problems are slowly coming back The computer is pretty stable most of the day actually right now but my prediction is that it won t last long It freezes more and more often in WinXP for no good reason and I have to force a cold reboot Sometimes I can t even get pass POST This morning when I turned the computer on I couldn t get pass POST and I had to try times before Windows loaded up completely and I could move the mouse right now it works great I don t know what s your gut feeling about this could it be the graphicscard I rarely push my graphicscard to the limits at all but there has been a few times recently last year when the computer locked up when I tried to play a HD movie I ascribed that to power problems I don t have that problem now But I m on a low budget right now I haven t found any friends yet who will lend me their PCI-express card If the motherboard is failing then I guess I have to replace it and reinstall windows and all my software nbsp

A:Constant but random lockups and freezing

What I would do...

Remove all traces of existing GPU driver, run off the generic MS vga driver. Down load and install the latest HD7700 series driver, it's about two months old. Then I would install ATI's afterBurner GPU program. It allows the user to make a custom GPU fan speed profile. Set it for 100% fan at 60*C. DO NOT OVERCLOCK!

You can't really trouble shoot the system until you have a clean driver install with temps under control.

Avoid using registry cleaners unless you know exactly what you are deleting, often you do more harm than good. Removing a few hundred lines from the registry makes no difference in performance.

Now you can start reading the mini dumps and you may find the problem, if you still have one.

A:Random lockups/restarts on new system

I would start by making a determination on whether this is a hardware or software issue by formatting the drive and reinstalling the OS from scratch and then seeing if the problem persists. My bet is you'll begin to have problem even before you get it completely set up.

My guess is this is a hardware issue and it may have to go back to the manufacturer.

Move your mouse around the desktop really fast. Does the computer lock up?

Update your Motherboard drivers and your gfx card drivers.

Hiya.

My computer will randomly freeze for no reason. The mouse stops, the keyboard is unresponsive, and the sound just cuts out.

The Device Manager isn't showing any errors, even with "Show hidden devices" checked. Every time it freezes, a bunch of "disk" 11 and "atapi" 5 errors show up in the Event Viewer. Scanning software like Spybot S&D will constantly lock up the computer during a scan.

I can't determine what's causing these lockups. At first I thought it was the CPU overheating, but the lockups happen anytime-- idle and load times.

I'm stumped. Does anyone know what's going on with my computer?

This is a pretty new system I had it built by a long-standing local Lockups, Random BSODs, reboots PC shop with a very good rep mostly because I didn't want to hassle with the typical issues BSODs, Lockups, Random reboots of putting a new system together And here I am having trouble System BSODs, Lockups, Random reboots is Win Home Premium bit The OS is original was installed by the builder and everything is new - wks old I brought it back to them a couple weeks back They ran Memtest and apparently didn't find anything but decided to replace the mem anyway GB DDR They stress tested it for a day said it was good and a day after I get it home it BSODs, Lockups, Random reboots starts acting up again The only BSOD that I could see long enough to read said quot Memory management quot as the error source It sometimes just reboots w o BSOD or freezes totally Might happen twice in a day or go days just fine No real pattern to it other than a few times I was watching a clip on YouTube Sometimes it happens when I am not at the PC From reading a bit here it tends to be either memory or a driver conflict Since they replaced the memory I am guessing it's a driver but no clue which one or where to go from here I don't want to waste another week in the shop if it is just a driver install I need to do The requested files are attached in a zip Thanks for any help you folks can offer

System is Win 7 Home Premium, 64bit. The OS is original was installed by the builder, and everything is new (~3-4 wks old)

I brought it back to them a couple weeks back. They ran Memtest and apparently didn't find anything, but decided to replace the mem anyway (8GB DDR3). They stress tested it for a day said it was good, and a day after I get it home it starts acting up again. The only BSOD that I could see long enough to read said "Memory_management" as the error source. It sometimes just reboots w/o BSOD, or freezes totally. Might happen twice in a day, or go 2 days just fine. No real pattern to it other than a few times I was watching a clip on YouTube. Sometimes it happens when I am not at the PC.

From reading a bit here it tends to be either memory or a driver conflict. Since they replaced the memory, I am guessing it's a driver, but no clue which one or where to go from here. I don't want to waste another week in the shop if it is just a driver install I need to do.

The requested files are attached in a zip.

Thanks for any help you folks can offer!

Two things
1-ASACPI.sys (2005) almost always causes BSOD's

ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005

Quote:
The 2005 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- download_item_mkt
Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
Download and install it.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT 2005).

2-mssmbios.sys Microsoft management BIOS driver. If the above doesnt cure the problem you may need to update the BIOS.

Before you do make a restore point, a backup, and have a working win 7 dvd.

Hello Windows Dell Intel Duo Core GB RAM Ge Force Video Card I m having a problem with my Windows system I m not actually sure whether it s a software or a hardware problem My computer locks Lockups - or Random Software? Hardware up freezes at completely random times It doesn t seem to matter whether it is idle for long hours of if I m using a program The only way to shut it down is by turning the machine off and turning back on for a dirty reboot There are no error messages or a blue screen of death I ve actually went into Windows s event viewer and there is nothing on the log at the moment of the freeze This problem occurred Random Lockups - Hardware or Software? about months ago and the lock ups also happened randomly I did things to try to solve the problem I deleted all of my temporary files and I updated Windows with as much updating as possible The only thing I didn t do is add the Service Pack update because it was acting funny not downloading Then I had no problems for about months until this weekend I tried to fix the problem in the same way but this time deleting temporary files and updating Windows seems to have had no effect I also took open my computer case and tried to clean all the dust away I m embarrassed to admit that it was very dirty inside and some of the vents were clogged All the fans seemed to be working fine I have a hunch that it is a hardware problem Something happened yesterday that makes me feel like it has nothing to do with Windows It locked up so I shut it down and turned it back on The problem was that I started to even have problems in the bios screen or the screen asking me to open up in safe mode or normal mode It would just lock up again Then my video card seemed to not be sending video to the monitor It wouldn t lock up but I would get no output on the monitor as I heard the windows loading chime I also had downloaded a program to check the heat on the processor and it was at about - degrees celsius well below the degree maximum for my machine I left my machine off overnight I then booted it up in safe mode because I intended to go to work and leave it on idle I thought that might test the theory of it being a driver issue malware or some other software problem Sure enough it actually locked up in safe mode after - minutes This makes me think that it is not an overheating issue of any kind I do have a lot of peripherals I tried disconnecting everything from the USB but it had no effect Lockups still happened The frequency of the lockups actually seems to have increased I haven t really checked my RAM I plan on doing a memory test when I get a chance I m really at a loss as to what hardware component might be failing and it s a real bummer that there is no error code in the event viewer to help me I am beginning to think of the Blue Screen of Death as an ally rather than something to dread

A:Random Lockups - Hardware or Software?

First thing I would do is update your chipset drivers, as well as updating your BIOS if there is an update available. I know of the freezing you are talking about, the past couple times I've seen it it's been motherboard related. But, before we go there check for those driver updates.

Hello This issue was first discovered by me when I was playing World of Warcraft which made it even more frustrating The problem is that my system randomly locks itself up during gaming Sometimes I can play for hours straight and not a single problem at other times I am only able to play for about one hour before the system freezes then I am forced to reboot the entire system because the ENTIRE system is TOTALLY Random during lockups system gameplay! UNRESPONSIVE No error messages are displayed at all I checked Microsoft's homepage for error messages and I came across this article where people seemed to have the exact same problem as me But unfortunately no solutions on the page I went Random system lockups during gameplay! into the Windows Event Viewer and checked the error messages which had a small result namely an ERROR message at the exact time when the system locked up the last time The error message is as follows Event filter with query quot SELECT FROM InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN WHERE TargetInstance ISA quot Win Processor quot AND TargetInstance LoadPercentage gt quot could not be reactivated in namespace quot root CIMV quot because of error x Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected I have figured it has something to do with my quot system root quot It also says the following Source WMI What is this Log Name Application Event ID Level Error OP Code Info Logged PM Task Category None Keywords Classic Computer My-PC I had this issue before but never as often like it is now It started to occur more and more frequently until it reached a limit where I re-installed Windows Vista Home Premium completely thinking that this would solve the issue but it DID NOT

How To Find Drivers:

Quote:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

Security Software: ??? I recommend either of these two setups:Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Good and Free system security combination.
Download and install the security setup of your choice, update the software, and then run a full scan of your system for viruses and malware. If you only install MSE, I would also suggest installing and updating Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download, but do not start the free trial/full version of Malwarebytes. Run a full scan with Malwarebytes after updating it. Post back the results.

Recently, I've been having very random program freezes (Firefox will lock up, then maybe Steam), and I have to wait a couple minutes for everything to "settle down". If I'm on a Skype call, the call will usually disconnect and sometimes Skype will crash claiming a disk i/o error.

Sometimes I have to restart my computer my computer, either using the windows option or forcefully with the power button, and often a lot of error message will pop up before it restarts. And every so often when these freezes happen/restarts, I will BSOD.

I'm wondering if a full hard drive replacement and reinstalling windows will fix this issue (since I've been planning to do that anyways), but I'm also wondering if it isn't my hard drives but another issues?

Thanks for your help!

Also in some games like League of Legends and Counterstrike : GO, I will randomly crash to a black screen/stuttering on one frame and either the game will crash and require a restart or I will have to wait a little for it to recover from the crash.

Make sure Windows Firewall is turned on. Reboot and let's see if this solves the problem. Please update us and let us know. If you get another BSOD after uninstalling ZA, please upload the dump.

If so we could use the information at this link provided.

even if you haven't had a crash running and uploading perfmon report as detailed at the link would at least give us an indication of what your software environment is doing when it freezes.

A:Random Startup Lockups when Using Rapid Boot

Hi,

I have had to system restore 3 or 4 times in the last 6 hours as Windows 8 refuses to boot after installing the latest updates from the last 4 days or so. I also tried installing Serviio 1.3 as well during the same time frame.

I have unchecked all the current updates and have decided against installing them as they seem to be preventing Windows from booting.

Pattern - "Restart to install updates"
Restart locks on the start screen 3x
"Windows is automatically repairing..." - Fails
"Windows must restore settings to a previous time..." - Usually fails, sometimes succeeds
Then I can get back into Windows.
As soon as I install these updates, I won't get back into Windows until I system restore and my build won't remain stable unless I prevent Windows from installing these updates.

What could be going on?

They are quite big updates (totalling ~740mb and are all from within the last 4 days or so)

I can give you a list of what they are if that helps?

I have a brand new Dell Studio XP 9100

Core i7-980X Extreme(12MB L2 Cache, 3.33GHz)
24GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5
2x 1TB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 RPM
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium
Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit, English

I have been receiving random lockups. Most of the time the computer completely locks up with frozen video, cant move mouse or keyboard, and have to hard reset. Every now and then the failure is an IRQ LESS OR EQUAL BSOD, but that has only been once or twice compared to the hard locks. The hard lock is a Kernel_power failure, with not much info in the event log (all x0 codes).

I have disabled catalyst control, did a memory test (good), all drivers and bios are up to date - its killing me.

I have attached the memory dump from the latest blue screen. Most are hard locks, but this is the latest BSOD dump.

Hi folks,

I built this computer for work and it's been constantly locking up or bluescreening.

On a first windows install, it would randomly BSOD but I thought I solved that problem, only to have it then start freezing. This was very random, sometimes it would run for days then boom, multiple freezes. I re-installed windows and now I'm back to BSOD and freezes. To be honest, I'm almost ready to stomp the thing.

I've run memtest, prime95, various stress testing programs and found no errors.

Motherboard is P8H61-MX USB3 Rev X.0x running a 3.20 gigahertz Intel Core i5-3470

Please save my sanity, thanks all!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! I am D-FRED-BROWN and I will be helping you. Please print or save this topic. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.----------Step 1----------------I know you've already run TDSSKiller before, but please run it one more time so we have an up-to-date idea of what may be remaining on the computer. Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Skip is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: Do not choose Cure or Delete unless instructed.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.----------Step 2----------------Please download ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix***IMPORTANT: save ComboFix to your Desktop**** Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.Please go here to see a list of programs that should be disabled.**Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall** Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.----------Step 3----------------Please download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.----------Step 4----------------In your next reply, please include the following:TDSSKiller's logfileComboFix's report (C:\ComboFix.txt)Security Check checkup.txtAfter that, please let me know: How is your computer running now? A:BSOD and random system lockups - GPU related?

Hi TarBash45.

Uninstall Asus Charger Plus. It is the main issue here.

Also, Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Daemon Tools at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :
Double click to open it.
Click this button only:

If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
Uninstall Avast using Avast Uninstall Utility. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one; for a safety reason.

Let us know the results.

Hi guys, my computer has recently started randomly locking up lately, the problem is that it doesnt seem to be leaving any error messages so i cant find a log on what is happening. when i press my restart button my computer shutsdown and during post asks if i want to run in safemode or normal mode. Also when windows start no your system has recovered from a critical crash or anything like that

Any ideas? ive checked inside my computer and everything seems to be fine, no dust or anything in there.

A:Random lockups that seem to happen while playing games

That message is common, if you force it to shut down.

Lockup during gameplay may happen due to many reason.

Is the display driver not up to date? Update your ATI/AMD display driver.
You can get it from the link in our forum, Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7, or you may go to AMD Graphics Driver and Software and opt for Automatically Detect and Install the appropriate driver for your card.

During installation, you may opt for advanced installation, and install the display driver only, not the Catalyst Control Center.

Is the GPU failing to work at a certain point of time?
Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy.

Is the computer not blowing hot air properly? Dismantle it, clean the inside carefully. Specially clean the air vents and fan grills.

Is the RAM failing to perform? Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

Is the PSU supplying adequate power, specially during gameplay when the computer consumes more power than usual? Make it sure that the PSU is of sufficient wattage and it is performing good.

Moreover, if the GPU is comparatively old and not a high rend one, then it may miss some FPS during gameplay, specially for the latest and resource hungry games. Lowering the preferences in the games settings may make the situation a bit better.

If the games are online games, some other factors will also be added it the list. So let us know the situation after making the suggested changes.

Edit: if you dismantle, make it sure that the RAMs are at the most possible distance from the CPU.
