Preferred Solution: microsoft essentials and other important security updates not installing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is an inconvenient delay not anything serious Running Windows updates updates Microsoft Security blocking Essentials other windows if it makes a difference Issue Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished Description I have Microsoft Update or Windows Update whichever it s known as in set to automatically check for updates but not download or install Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates without my approval I do this so I can review what s being updated I m a little wary Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a quot critical quot update in the last year Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates or two Anyways when I boot up the computer it checks for updates and alerts me of them However Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background Which is all well and good except whenever that s happening it causes MU to quot fail quot updates until it s done updating Thus I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done then run the MU update Question MSE definition updates are included under quot Optional quot updates in MU is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance I don t see an option and I d rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft s hands completely nbsp

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

Hey All,

If you use Microsoft Security Essentials, (MSE) as your Anti-Virus protection, which I love for it's lightweight resource usage, and how it does not get in the way of other programs, you may be wondering how it gets it's updates and interacts with Windows Update. Please note that MSE applies to all current versions of Windows EXCEPT Windows 8, which has Windows Defender built in as its anti-virus:

I have windows xp Professional Version 2002 sp3. Seems I got a virus when I down loaded a movie(my bad). Was getting the BSOD, and alerts for Windows Automatic Updates to be turned on. Also I am running Microsoft security essentials which also won't update. Although Malwarebytes updates automatically. I downloaded Superantispyware and ran it 3 times in safe mode .Found and deleted malware. Rebooted and so far no BSOD ( fingers crossed). Still get the alerts for the updates.

Windows 7 Home edition PC.

I'm getting the 0x80073b01 Error Code when I install Security Essentials after it completes the installation but before it starts the program for the first time.  If I click on it from the start menu, it gives the same error as I try to start it.  I believe the same problem is preventing the Microsoft updates from happening as well....they show two new critical updates needed, but it is never able to install them.

Found the program titled "PC Speed Fix" installed on her computer.  I uninstalled it, and after reboot it shows up again (now it is not showing up in her installed programs list).

I have ran updated versions of Malwarebytes and SpyBot...both removed some items, but still unable to start/run Security Essentials.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  Thanks!!

Many of you(like me) don't like to have Microsoft automatically download and install updates, and prefer to have control over which updates get installed.

It was discovered that the install of Microsoft Security Essentials will change the setting back to Automatic without your knowledge. The end result is getting updates installed without your knowledge, unless you change the setting back to where you had it right after you install MSE.

You can read the full article here.

I have been having this problem for a couple of months now. I currently have 25 Important and 5 Optional Windows Updates downloaded onto my computer, but when I restart/shut-down, the updates fail. It usually ends with the message "Windows update failure; reverting (or reconfiguring) changes" or something like that. Then I can log in and use my computer like normal.

I have been ignoring the issue since everything was working until recently. I have started to notice things are slower (Internet Explorer, Chrome) and updates for Avast and other programs seem to get stopped before they can begin. For example, Avast is now telling me I have no internet connection, even though I am watching youtube videos while I try to update Avast.

Please let me know how to get these updates to install properly. I hope that fixing them will also resolve some of my other issues.

Thanks

I m unfortunately still using XP because of issues I with updates sec Microsoft XP essentials switched to Mozilla long ago but my Microsoft sec essentials updates with XP MSE anti virus was using IE to update because Microsoft website says to set IE as the default browser for updating and scanning MSE So I left IE as the default browser but used Mozilla for everything else on the web After the news yesterday that IE is unsafe I changed Mozillla to my default browser and MSE will not update today Or maybe I just have the latest definitions and they haven t been updated yet for today s date So since IE is unsafe would I be inviting disaster if I set IE back to default browser and only used it to update MSE Or should I delete MSE altogether and download another anti virus if I can find a free one I m not a total cheapskate It will just take a while for me to save up the cash to upgrade I m thinking about refurbs too Also When I do upgrade I don t want microsoft anymore Their frequent changes don t always translate into better operating systems I don t want google because I ve read that it doesn t have i tunes Apple is way too expensive for me What s left Does linux and or ubuntu come preinstalled on any newer laptops If I installed linux myself what website do I go to for safe downloads There seem to be a LOT of them I can t upgrade my current XP laptop to windows for example if it could be because for some reason the CD DVD drive stopped working a few years ago It won t play anything Thanks for any help u can provide nbsp

A:Microsoft sec essentials updates with XP

Hello Kattree

There are a lot of questions in your Post which refer to different areas of computing. You may receive more informed answers if you asked your questions in different Posts. - BUT don't duplicate your post - the TSG Moderators will not be happy if you do that

Q1. - MSE won't update. Update the Virus and Spyware definitions manually directly from the MSE interface. The lastest Virus and Spyware definitions are 1.173.1026.0 You shouldn't have any problems with the update if you use Firefox and make it your default browser

Q2 - Is IE8 safe to use with XP. Short answer - NO. Don't go back to using IE8 for anything

Q3. - Should I try a different Free AV - Short answer - Yes. There are plenty of very good products out there. Do a little research yourself. e.g. Avast, AVG, Avira.... all good, all free. But read the reviews and decide which is right for you.

Q4 - You don't want Microsoft anymore. - Hmmm.... there are a few million that feel that way..... but the truth is that moving from Windows to something else e.g. Linux is not like changing your car from a Toyota to a Honda. Moving to a different OS is a very big decision which requires extensive research. In the end (unless you are a big techie guru) you will probably stay with Windows, so make your plans to include the Windows option.

Hey there. Why does MSE update in both in two different ways? You can manually update it from it's opening screen of MSE! Then you can update it from Windows update.

I'm not a fan of this. I'd rather see all the updates come via MSE only and not through Windows update motor.

To those what's your take on this? Thanks everyone!

A:Microsoft Essentials updates??

Since it's a Microsoft program, they will of course have it be able to be updated through Windows Update as well as manually through the program. It doesn't really matter which option you use to update the program since it will only update from either or and not both for that specific update.

You could also set Windows Updates to not show updates for other Microsoft programs using step 8 in this tutorial below to not have them there.

Windows Update Settings - Change

Hope this helps,

I have Windows 7 and get automatic updates from Microsoft. The problem I am having is that there is one particular update that will not install and I cannot find any method of removing from the listing of important updates. The update is "Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419)". It is 156 Mb in size. When it attempts to install it produces a message something to the effect that I have a "different flavor" of Essentials and it stops installation. But, I cannot cancel the installation - it just sits there. Is there a method of removing this item from the listing, or is there some other method of not receiving it in the first place? I have turned off the automatic installation of updates so that I can unselect this one each time there are others to install.

A:Microsoft's Security Essentials isn't the best antivirus program, according to Microsoft

Despite seeing MSE at the bottom of 'that' list, I was quite amused at how many other big names were as mediocre.

MS bought a good AV company, one of the top in it's day, seems like, as many others before, they've let it slide. Shame.

On the fence myself, I really don't like Avast, will probable look for some alternative, when I have more time. May try out Bitdefender.

oh, well that was easy enough, done!

hey guys, i just heard about this recently after reading another thread and it sounds great.

main points:

- free
- low system use
- created by microsoft (good or bad i guess)
- updated regularly

what do you guys think? i heard it only uses 5 or 6mb of memory and isn't plagued with the bloat and slowdowns other AV software create.

i'm just worried about giving MS too much information on my PC.

right now i'm running avast and this has been pretty decent for me so far, but this MSE sounds like it has promise.

edit: i'll be formatting soon so i thought i'd try it out with a clean system. im considering trying it out soon though.

A:After successfully installing 9 important updates, have lost Internet

I think your best route of action at this point is to do a system restore back to before it installed the updates; as those updates may not necessairly be suitable for your system. Just because microsoft puts out updates via windows update; doesnt always mean they are compatible with your system. I would do a system restore to before you updated all 9 items; and if you can; upload or post what those 9 items are and we can go from there.

Thank you,

A:Intel NUC5i3RYH, Windows 7 Update not installing important updates

I regard Windows Update as a last resort for installing drivers, and suggest installing the drivers supplied by Intel for the board:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/83257/Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC5i3RYH

If you have had driver installs fail, it may be necessary to boot into Safe Mode and delete failed installations from Device Manager and install again if you continue to have installs fail.

I have recently installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on Windows 7. To my surprise, I discovered that updates are delivered not just when requested via MSE but also as an optional update via Windows update. I have downloaded some through Windows update but that seemed to cause a few problems - Windows update stopped working (error code 80244019), for example. That probem has now been sorted out, but I still wonder why these MSE updates appear in Windows update as optional updates. Should one simply ignore them and download using MSE instead?

A:Security Essentials updates

That is normal. Windows will automatically download and install MSE updates once a day for you.MSE (and Windows Defender) gets defintion updates via Windows Updates or by manually downloading the definitions. I have tried updating Security Essentials, and get "connection failed" - even though there is a good connection.
I tried downloading the update file (mpam) on a few other computers, and those never complete either.
I first noticed this yesterday (1-15-13) but the problem continues.
I'm trying to get the download file because that takes a lot less time that updating thru the program, and in this case the program can't even get the file.
Is there a problem with Essentials downloads?
It makes no difference what computer I use, I can't get past about 2% of the download. None of the computers are infected - all scans show clear.

How often does Windows Update check for and install MS Security Essentials (MSE) definition updates?

I noticed that for the last few weeks MS is updating MSE definations a lot more.
I use to get 2-3 updates per day and now i'm getting 5-10 updates per day.
I use a scheduled task to check for and install updates.
I'm just wondering how often these definitions get updated now for someone using "normal" WU for these.

A:MS Security Essentials (MSE) definition updates?

I don't know that their is a exact time or amount of updates available. Security updates come as fast and often as Microsoft creates them for MSE is my understanding. I do mine manual several times a day.

Is MSE free version suppose to update automatically or not I am running Windows Pro bit version I have been manually updating it every day or so and I have it set to check Solved: updates MS Security Essentials for updates before it runs a scan but I only scan my computers about once a week is that enough Also how often Solved: MS Security Essentials updates does Microsoft really create NEW definition updates Daily Weekly or what I Solved: MS Security Essentials updates had a problem last week with MSE not being able to update at all manually or through the Windows Update under Optional Updates I finally used my System Restore and went back several days and that problem went away I am not sure what caused the problem to start with since it was on one of the computers the kids play games on at free sites It could of also been caused by windows update since other people have had problems with not being able to manually update MSE too I seen it on several other post in other forums giving an error in connection failures Sorry to have been so long just thought maybe someone else may be still having this same problem with MSE not updating Thanks for any info nbsp

New definition files are pretty much updated and installed on a daily basis.

it was on one of the computers the kids play games on at free sitesClick to expand...

If you're relying solely on MSE to protect that computer, you need to make use of other security-related programs.

AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware (all free) are what I use on a weekly basis.

Does anyone know why Microsoft canceled support discontinued Microsoft Expression Web and why Windows Essentials Windows Live Web Microsoft + Updates Expression Live Essentials especially Windows Live Writer hasn't been updated in years Both are great products but Windows Live Writer is my heartbeat but I stopped using it as i realized that Wordpress' dashboard is easier to work with now as Windows Live Essentials Updates + Microsoft Expression Web it has been updated and I can upload my image galleries for a post flawlessly in WP's dashboard Windows Live Writer can't upload WordPress galleries to the WordPress site directly It can only work with Picasa and OneDrive and the files are stored on those accounts while only the thumbnails get publisher to my WordPress site I can't get the thumbnails to work in this manner anymore either as when i try to upload galleries using Windows Live Writer I get error messages saying it won't go through That's why I stopped using Live Writer Expression Web seems okay but Adobe Muse can do better effects but I don't use Muse right now as it is problematic If Muse and Expression Web were somehow fused not by a company merger but shared the same features I would be all up for buying software like that But my cousin who is a techie purchased Muse and Expression Web several years ago and was using them briefly and regretted using Expression Web as it is so basic and primitive Adobe Muse is too tricky and the items never stay where you place them I have seen people work with Muse at work and in tutorials but unfortunately all my web design friends are too busy and have no time to teach me So I'm stuck But right now I'll stick to WordPress I just wish Windows Live Writer could be updated with a more modern and impressive interface and set of features Is the going to happen in the near future If so what is Microsoft waiting for to do this upgrade Are they going to update Windows Essentials in the near future or are they waiting to do so when Windows is released or near to be released Or will Microsoft replace Windows Live Writer with a new product which they did with Frontpage when they changed it to Expression Web I just need an alternative to what we have now with Live Writer and Blogjet is a joke Plus Microsoft Word bit which I own and tried blogging with isn't good enough especially when you are working with images and I don't even think you can embed videos from YouTube Vimeo Dailymotion and other service even Facebook So what I am looking for is something new especially with Expression Web which needs to be an effective alternative to Adobe Muse so with its discontinuation we need something new to work with in terms of creating websites and it should also work with WordPress and be user friendly to those like me who don't know code and want drag and drop even if it comes in more than one version where one if more drag and drop friendly to non coders and one for those who want to work with code and do more powerful activities So with all this off my chest finally after many months what do you think or know is coming as factual Speak to me

A:Windows Live Essentials Updates + Microsoft Expression Web

Expression Web is still available, just has been made free with little or no support. Microsoft seems to do well in reducing costs when things don't sell well due to competition from third-party products. As with all software one has to consider the advantages and disadvantages for their needs. I had to drop FrontPage when I went with the 64-bit version of Office 2010 and Expression Web is fine for my need. As for WordPress that was recommended by my Domain Host, I just couldn't get around the blogging part so do not use it. Serif has a product called WebPlus [ WebPlus X7 - Easy to use and professional web design software from Serif ] that seems useful but since they've moved all their offices to the UK my MasterCard and Visa cards get blocked by the card company 'due to high card fraud from the UK' so I'll keep my eyes open for alternatives.

Personally I use MSE as on access, with MBAM and Hitman Pro for on demand.

Do you agree? If so, how do I do this.

With windows live one care all of my computers and printers could be shared, but with windows security essentials this is not possible.
Does anyone know how to get my different computers and printers to share on windows 7 with microsoft security essentials?

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

Put them in the safe workgroup if you are sharing with XP and use gigabit ethernet via Cat 5e cables for speed.

Hi guys,

First time poster, long time reader, just wondered what do ye think of microsoft security essentials as an Anti Virus?

A:microsoft security essentials

Welcome to BCMicrosoft Security Essentials Overview is basically a stripped-down version of OneCare aimed at users who either can?t or don't want to pay for antivirus/anti-malware software.Microsoft Security Essentials Review: Installing and Using Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: MSE Installing and UsingReview: Microsoft Security EssentialsMicrosoft Security Essentials download pageMicrosoft Security Essentials Support - (Videos for Install-Scan-Fix a threat, Help & How To, Submit a case file, Report a Threat)Note: Before installation, MSE checks for a validated copy of Windows and will disable Windows Defender. You need to uninstall all other "Memory Resident" antivirus applications before you install Microsoft Security Essentials.I tried it but still prefer avast as a free alternative.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials. Lately it has remained in the orange ( stays potential threat status). It says the computer hasn't been scanned lately when in fact, I just manually ordered full scan yesterday. I have it set to auto updates & scans.I am sure I have a malware invasion as my computer is running EXTREMELY slow (snail crawl), Every morning I find an error about Animalware executable not being able to run or something like that. My Outlook Express mail was the first thing to go - it just froze up totally (cannot perform any function there) this was about 3 weeks ago and I've tried EVERYTHING from Microsoft Fix it, PC Unleashed and everything in between to try and fix problem to no avail HELP!!! HELP!!!

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

As for the MSE staying in the "orange", if you are using CCleaner or any other 3rd party disk cleaner, make sure the boxes for "MS AntiMalware" and "MS Security Client" or anything else that looks like it has something to do with the antivirus, are NOT checked, as this will erase logs every time you run the cleaner and tell Windows that a scan hasn't been run. As for ("an error about Animalware executable not being able to run or something like that") - check in "services" that it is set to run "automatic" - Right click "my computer" - "manage" - "services & applications" - "services" - scroll to"Microsoft Antimalware" - right click it - click "properties" - under "startup type" click the down arrow to drop the menu & click "automatic" if it is not already set as so - click "apply" & exit.

As for malware itself, here are links to 3 great tools. There are lots of others out there, but, in my case, these 3 are the only ones that find anything. The Comodo CE is especially good for rootkits because it prompts you to restart during the process so it can access & scan "locked" files that can't otherwise be accessed while Windows is running. But feel free to try others if you think there are still problems. A few more are:

IOBit Malware Fighter (free)
Adaware (free)
Spybot Search & Destroy
(without "teatimer" function")
Norman Malware Cleaner

These 4 are pretty good, but kinda large, don't let that discourage you, after all if you're infected, you have nothing but time anyway. They just don't seem to help me anymore because I'm clean & have been managing to stay that way. GoodLuck

I've just completed a clean install of an Acer PC using its Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade DVD (thanks to this community too: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version).

Now it's time to add few useful programs systems will use for security.

I've asked for a suggest on an other community where an expert user (seems he wrote also many wiki articles) answered me to use "Microsoft Security Essentials" only.

Now, I'm not a windows user since many years ago, but a friend asked me if I could re-install Win-7 on its pc, by now slowed down due to many bad apps and so on...
So, I don't know if MS security is a good choice or just it "sucks" compared to other third parties alternatives.

I'd glad if you could give me a feedback for that product.
Thanks in advance!

I know very few technical details in comparison to what that expert likely knows, but I whole-heartedly agree. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) quite some time ago and have never looked back. There is no such software that is perfectly able to catch absolutely everything, and there is no better security on the internet than in having good-and-safe clicking habits for staying out of trouble -- no click = no trouble -- in the first place. But MSE does as well as any in an overall sense and it can do that without dragging your machine down.

That may be a bit of an over-generalization?

For Kaspersky products, as an example, it is in fact always strongly recommended that other AVs be cleanly and thoroughly uninstalled prior to installing, using the vendor's removal tool, if available.

If the user does not do so, KIS/KAV/PURE/KTS will automatically attempt to remove (rather than disable) MSE and a host of other incompatible applications during its installation, as listed here (certain others must be removed manually).
If the existing AV installation is corrupted or broken, then KIS/KAV/PURE/KTS may have trouble uninstalling it, and that could lead to a KIS/KAV/PURE/KTS install failure.
Even if the install succeeds, Kaspersky products, as well as many other security products, can be finicky about leftover drivers and other remnants of other security products.
Cheers,

I want to find a good security program/programs that I can recommend to my friends. I have been checking out a website in reference to "Microsoft Security Essentials". Is this a good program to use? Would I need to run any other adware removal tools long with it? I just watched a video at www.microsoft.com/security/essentials. The video advised to uninstall all other antivirus before using. Does this include spyware removal tools like Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware, or can these tools be used along side of Microsoft security Essential? Another question; is their any current tutorial on the removal tools given here on bleeping computer. The ones I see are all outdated. Thanks.

Id recommend Microsoft Security Essentials along side with Malwarebytes Antimalware, and Super Anti-Spyware.

<<However I am concerned that I have a Fake MSE in the registry somewhere. So I want to make sure before I do a Clean install.>>

If I understand correctly...this is a non-issue since a clean install of Windows...wipes out everything, by definition. Any previous Windows installation, including the registry, will be deleted if user does a clean install.

If your intent is NOT to do a clean install of Windows...please confirm exactly what you are talking about when you use the phrase "clean install."

I've used MSE on a few machines and found it surprisingly good . That and Avira Antivir both do very well in comparative tests, so I'd stick with it for a bit and see how it does for you .

On the older machines I've stuck it on (2.8Ghz P4, 1.3Ghz Pentium M) it runs much better than other choices that I've used in the past and it's done well so far.

The Diskeeper 7 file may be a false positive - so you could try running it through this and see what happens:

http://www.virustotal.com/

It checks any single file with all of the major AV scanners - quite clever

Hello All
My MSE is updating permanently is this right? , its been updating for 3 days, even when i shut down and then start up its still updating, is this right? or is there some reason for this?

Thanks
Allan

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

Allen
MSE is updating current defintions. When you first download it may take time, lets say 30 minutes or so to update. After that intitial update it should update once or twice a day. Each update should take about 2 or 3 minutes. Anything that deviates greatly from the parameters that I have set should be investigated.
MSE is working real time to catch virus, but this is more or less silent, I do not even know that it is happening. The only event that may be noticed is an active scan. Check the schedule and make sure that your active scan is set for quick and only about once a week.

With respect to all.

Microsoft has recently launched "MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS" a real time AV.
I wish to know whether it is worth installing or should wait for some time for now.

Further I have AVAST installed on my PC. Will it interfere with it? Is it advisable to
run both AVAST and "MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS"? If not, which one should
be given preference?

Thanks.

You should only run one Antivirus program at a time. You could run into conflicts and false alarms running more than one. Here is an article on Microsoft Security Essentials: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2353447,00.asp. It is definitely better than nothing, but still has a little ways to go.

So far I am extremely happy with MSSE. Just for an example it detected a trojan horse that got downloaded in a song file from Limewire from 2009 that none of the other antivirus programs that I used ever picked up. It detected it and cleaned it. The use of it is so much easier than any other program that I have used, and I have used them all, and I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the auto update and auto scan. It has never missed a scheduled scan and its real time protection has been outstanding. I am extremely happy thus far with MSSE and would recommend it to anyone. I have gone ahead and have removed any of the other third party programs from my computers and use MSSE exclusively. Both of my laptops are 5+ years old and run better than they did brand new. I run XP on both of them.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

What do you mean when you say it does not automatically update? Are you saying when you manually update MSE it still updates? If that's what you mean then the reason IIRC is that updates are released several times a day but the automatic update only updates once per day.

Hi all, what a great site this is. Hard to beleive the knowledge that is floating around in this forum. To my point, I installed Microsoft security essential recently and now I want to run a malware scan on my pc. To run the scan it is recommended to disable any and all live protection you have on your pc. I have poked around trying to see how to disable MS Security Essential but no luck, only option is to uninstall for the scan and then reinstall MS Security Essential. So, is there a way to disable this software or do I just uninstall it?

Thank for your help in advance!

Not sure why you'd want to disable it, but there are instructions on temporarily doing so here.

After a period of successful beta testing, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is final! MSE is independently certified by West Coast Labs and is backed by Microsoft's global security response team. Most importantly, MSE is built on the same core security technology used in Microsoft Forefront, the enterprise version for businesses.

MSE is free for personal use and can be downloaded directly from the dedicated Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/security essentials.

In the event you are replacing a security suite with Microsoft Security Essentials, it will be necessary to install a replacement software firewall or activate the Windows Vista or Windows 7 Firewall. Online Armor Free and Agnitum Outpost Firewall are free for personal use.

Then after that, at times pages will be a little slower to open at times and run smooth at times. For some reason mse doesn't want to play nice. did you put your CD key during setup? and did you go to Start---Control Panel--- System and at the very bottom it should say "windows is not activated"

30 days (or less) to activate windows.

This happens because even though you entered the key, microsoft still needs to activate your copy. by phone or online.

hey guys, i read some reviews from earlier this year about MSE and how it failed alot of tests, but recently i have read some new reviews that microsoft was working on that and making MSE better since then. whenever i fix some computers up for family members and friends i usually always install MSE with malwarebytes to give them an initial free wall of protection to work with, should i not be using MSE?? should i be using avast instead, since i have read good reviews about avast, but also some bad. do you guys recommend something different or better? any input is greatly appreciated. i personally like MSE, but if its protection is crap, then of course id switch.

A:is microsoft security essentials really that bad?

You hear good reviews and bad reviews on nearly everything. I personally use Avast on my laptop. I have AVG on my desktop, and it runs great as well. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials on another computer, and you hardly notice it's running. I've read reviews as Avast being the best free AV, but I like AVG more than Avast. Avast does tell you, like literally through the speakers, that it updated virus definitions which can be cool sometimes, but could easily be disabled if you want. I probably didn't help much, but any free AV will work decently. I haven't heard anything bad about MSE though.

Is anybody else here been using or had a look at Microsoft Security Essentials yet ?
I downloaded it and installed it on my other halfs laptop for her when I installed Windows 7 for her over the weekend. So fart I am really impressed. Very easy to setup. Easy to navigate your way around etc. Also there seems to be no lag on the laptop while running a full scan and still using the laptop. Before whe the computer had W7 RC on it and Kaspersky it was a nightmare to try and use while KIS was doing a scan. Scans also sem to fly by.
Anyway I will be having a good look around it voer the next week or so to see whats what in the pot and shall report back wiht anything I see that might be of interest..

I ditched my paid for KIS 2011 in favour of MSE, mainly because it was causing random BSOD.

Is it just me, or does MSE not do automatic virus updates?

Every now and then I will check for a Windows Update, only to find MSE definitions that need updating.

I have set MSE to do a daily scan. And to check for updates before running a scan.

I have set my Critical Updates and patches etc. to check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.

I have always set my system to do this, because I hate being in the middle of doing something and the popup window "restart now or later" comes up.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

I have MSE, it will update automatically
It will come via the windows live update, or through MSE itself.
Windows update checks for updates once a day. If there is a MSE update, it will be updated the next time that Update checks.

My license for Nod 32 has recently run out.

I'm looking for a new security solution. My laptop is a few years old at this stage but it's been running nod 32 excellently for years and it hasn't got terrible specs. Its a toshiba equium with 2 GB of RAM with 1.6Ghz Intel Centrino Duo with a 250GB HDD running Win xp SP3.

I've tried avast and removed it after a day. I found it slowed down my laptop an awful lot. I was onlt running itunes and firefox and the thing was hanging like crazy.

I've installed Microsoft Security Essentials and it appears to be running fine at the moment. So basically should I trust micrsoft security essentials as my antivirus software. Should I just go back to Nod 32.

Hi,

Neither MSE (nor McCrappee for that matter) are designed to detect BSOD's - they are designed to detect malware, which is something totally different.

McCrappe is crap, thats why it is a known cause of BSOD, certainly in the many thousands of cases we see here.

MSE is good enough for the average user. If you are diligent about your internet surfing habits, it will be good enough for you.

If you need more help with your BSOD, read this:

The first thing anyone needs to realize is that MSE is NOT an "all round package". MSE guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/It does NOT contain a firewall, which is an essential part of computer security. Over the years I've spent in BC and another forum, I've seen a lot of people saying "I need/want to get rid of (whatever) internet security and need recommendations for an antivirus." People respond with antivirus program names, but very few have mentioned firewalls to replace one included with a suite. I know this doesn't give you any feedback on the program itself, but I felt the need to point this out.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials?

Hello GodDhead and welcome to TSF,

Microsoft Security Essentials is the Anti-Virus program. It is important to have one installed on your computer. MSE did put out an updated MSE, but you are not required to uninstall, you should be able to update from the MSE User Interface. (Big Update button).

There are viruses that pose as MSE and attempt to get you to install/update and then procede to wreak havok on the computer.

Did you recieve any error messages that you can relay to us?

So I notice MSE v2 is released. I have v1.0.2498.0 installed, and when I press UPDATE only the definitions are renewed.

I don't know whether to uninstal old one and instal v2.0.657.

Thing is I've never had any problem with the old one, and if it ain't broke....

Anybody got any thoughts / experiences on this?

A:Microsoft Security Essentials v1 Vs. v2

Most people have gone to MS and downloaded the new version and manually installed it.

I don't think it comes via update, but I could be wrong.

Mine new version installed right over the top of the old one.

It has a few new menu choices. I don't know what is different under the hood, but I don't see any reason not to go with the new version.

There's at least one long thread on it.

MSE is pretty good. Just remember that no AV can really prevent infections. They are more of a band-aid than anything else. If you surf the Internet with a healthy sense of paranoia you can avoid most problems yourself.

I have loaded Microsoft Security Essentials onto my main Vista PC, I have removed (I think I have) all other AV programs.
When the PC boots up it hogs the processor (both cores) for some considerable time (can be up to 5 minutes)
I have run bot the quick and full scans from MSE and both have come up clean.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Running windows 7 Pro. Have had microsoft security essentials installed for about a yer. Starting today when the computer starts the green icon is there with a check mark. If I put my mouse on the icon it disappears. Uninstalled and reinstalled security essentials. Same thing. Anyone else having this problem or how to fix. Thanks

My check mark does not disappear, however.
