Preferred Solution: Windows Xp VPN server setup hanging

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I want to setup a secure VPN server on my windows xp box using the built in xp vpn server. When I go through the process of setting up the server, the only security feature I have control over seems to be which users can have access. There are no options for authentication, what type of encryption, ip filters, etc. The windows XP client seems to be where all of the security options can be set, which doesn't really make sense. I would think the server would have control over security... but my understanding is perhaps limited.

Can the VPN server security be tweaked by setting up IP Security Policies? Can anyone point me to a "how to" tutorial or offer me some guidance?

Your only option is to check the box "Require all users to secure their passwords and data"

ok guys I have a server just one question, how do I get it online? It has 4GB RAM 160GB Hard Drive and running windows server 2003 also this will be used to host images for our company I just have no idea how to get it online so I can access it from any internet connection. Can I access by just typing in the ip or do I need to register an domain name first and where do I go from there?

A:windows Server Setup

Make sure you have a static IP from your ISP. Next, register your domain at the hosting company of your choosing. Then, statically assign your IP addresses for the server on your private LAN. If you are using Windows Remote Desktop, make sure it is enabled in Control Panel --> System --> Remote and that you forward port 3389 for TCP and UDP on your router, pointing towards your server's IP address.
Once that is done, you have a few choices as to how you access the server via HTTP over the internet. You could use Windows included IIS (Internet Information Services) to configure and setup a website, or you could use Apache (http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.cgi). Read their tutorials on how to get started because past this point, my knowledge is limited. Nothing a few good Google searches could fix, however

A:Setup VPN on a windows 2003 server

From everything I have been reading, you either have to use your firewall to authenticate and then pass you on to the network, or you need to add another NIC to your server and connect it directly to the internet other wise there is no way for the outside people to get to it.

Hi all,
first off, let me say hello to all and hopefully this forum will to be more popular one..

I have an AMD Athlon
Its got a SOYO SY-K7V Dragon motherboard that i'm unable to flash for some strange reason.
Maxtor 30 Gb

When i try to install XP , it simply hangs at the blue screen of windows setup and says, "setup is starting windows"

I tried the jumper settings

I tried inserting the hd into a diff IDE slot on the motherboard

I tried using different IDE cable assignments..

new bios flash ?

what can do next ?

I got into all this trouble cuz i wanted to go to XP and at the same time install a 5 port USB 2.0 pci card into the pc..

thanks for any suggestions

A:XP "setup is starting windows" hanging

I would remove all cards not needed to load windows. Some cars have been known to hang up the Windows install.

After you get Windows installed, you can add these cards back and load drivers.

Let us know if this works.

A:{Advice Offered} - Windows NT Server Setup

Greetings

It sounds like the drive you have is formatted with FAT32.

Here's what you can do:
1) Get a boot disk, ( I have one available from www.xperts.co.za/multiboot ), and use it to delete the partition, and recreate it as either FAT16 or NTFS (most bootdisks have FDISK and FORMAT, which will only give you the choice of FAT16. My disk has Partition magic, which will give you both options).

2) Recreate the partition as FAT16 or NTFS

3) Try re-installing NT.
Also, make sure that the active partition (the partition that is bootable), is NOT more then 8 gigs away from the start of the drive, and that the size of your system partition does not exceed 8 gigs (this is a flaw in the installation program for NT4, which has been corrected with Win2K).

Cheers

Check the CD make sure it is cleaned off of any smudges, fingerprints. Look for scratches.
Press F12 at bootup and run the Dell Diagnostics. You can also download the ISO image for either Seatools, or Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the Image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. Boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and the Advanced tests on the HDD. If all these tests pass, then Download the DOS Boot ISO image for [email protected] and burn the image with their image burner or IMGBurn and boot off of that CD and do a low level Format on the HDD (this will take a very long time, so please be patient) when it is done, boot off of the XP CD again and try the reinstall again.

Hi Guys,

I'm new on the board and I've joined becase I could do with a hand.
Basically our work's tech guy has left to join the army (long story) and before he left he setup out 2000 Windows AS for me which was cool.

We are now opening another office and I need to replicate the same setup again. I'm ok when it comes to the hardware side of it... switches, routers etc.... But my problem is when I have to configure the Server setup.

Can you recommend any good sources on the internet that can talk me through it step by step... like I'm a 2 yeard old. But preferably not step by step and theres about 2351 steps in all.

Your words of wisdom would be a great help !

Cheers guys !

I have tried a couple of disk management software but it seems like it can't be done. If anyone knows of a way to do this that would help me out greatly!!

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to set up network using windows 2003 server.I don't have enough knowledge of networking except that I have a few computers at home that are on a network. So I'm trying to do the same thing for a friend's little business. The problem is that he bought a server with Windows 2003 server that I have never used before.I have been able to put all the computers on the network.I can access the server from any computer by logging in as Administrator. I believe that I need to make users on the server so that users can connect to the Server using their own password but I don't know how to do that .

Can someone please tell how to do that.Or give me a link for a basic tutorial for windows 2003 server that explains how to create user accounts on the network.

Thanks very much!!

A:Solved: windows 2003 server - setup issues

Why are you repairing the server? I ask because it's quite probable that this is a virus. The LSASS process manages user logins, and is often targeted for infections on PC's and servers running Windows.

Which ever User name you used when you set up your Windows 8 is the one you would use for the credentials on the Home server.

For instance if you used the name JSmith-PC then the User name to use is JSmith.

When ever I run "DCPROMO" and go through the active dirctory for domain wizard it locks up after is asks me for the domain name. It will just sit and and go into not responding. Ocasionaly when I flush the DNS in the command prompt it lets me by and doent lock but that does not work all the time. If anyone knows why this occurs and has a remedy for this issue please post. My elderly (2003) Mesh XP PC was accidentally shut down too soon yesterday.

Now it stops booting at a BSOD and when I try F8 options they all result in a reboot loop except the one that disables automatic reboot. This means I can't get into Safe Mode at all.

Going for Recovery Console, I have tried booting from both the supplier's XP recovery disk and a RC disk I've downloaded and burned myself, but in both cases setup hangs at 'Setup is starting Windows'.

So - I am stuffed but not exactly mounted... because I am unmountable (allegedly).

HELP!

Hi,

When I click on 'Start' - 'Settings' - 'control panel', a blank window opens and hangs for about 5 seconds before the contents appear. This is true for a lot of windows. Sometimes when I browse 'My documents', say I double click a folder it will open blank and take up to 10 seconds for the contents to appear.

Any suggestions?
Henry

A:Windows hanging hanging ghanging...

have you defragmented your harddrive recently ?? sounds like your system is having to find the data on your harddrive perhaps....might be helpful to get you a utility like system mechanic or one I like a lot ,,,Tuneup Utilities,,,,,it will check your Programs structure for errors, registry for errors, including check your harddrive for major Fragmentation ...and has a fix it button at the end after it scans for problems and corrects them. did it start happening after a hardware or software change? how much ram do you have and speed or your processor?

HI

I have just installed a W2k server and would like to make it a BDC on our NT 4.0 domain.

Is this possible? I do not want to upgrade our NT domain to W2K as this server will be located at a remote site with a slow WAN link and I do not want the heavy trafic that comes with Active Directory Replication.

Many thanks for your help

Pete

A:Setup a W2K server as a BDC

NO!!

You cannot have a win2k domain controller on an NT4 domain. If you want to upgrade to win2k, install a BDC as NT4 then promote it to win2k. Take the old NT4 DC offline and upgrade the new DC to win2k. If all goes well, rebuild the old DC to win2k as a DC in the new win2k domain.

My company is currently updating our property management system and required that we set up 2 new win 2003servers, one for the application/database, and one terminal server for our sister hotel, so that they may access the other server. We currently have win 2003Small Business Server running our file, dhcp, dns, ect.
I just need to confirm the proper way to set this up. So far.. the application server has NIC1 going to the switch that is tied in with the SBS, and NIC 2 going to the terminal server NIC 2. The terminal server NIC 1 would then be connected directly to our firewall/router, correct?
Here is where I get stuck. Which IP addresses do I need for the terminal server, and do I need other servers running on the terminal server to get access to the application server?
Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Server setup

The system won't work the way you suggest campusspecialist...

Are you running ISA on the SBS server? And what kind of router/firewall do you have in place?

If you're not running ISA, then i'd personally disable the second network card on the SBS and
link your server directly to the router. Same with the terminal server, direct connection to the
router, you definitely don't need the second nic on the terminal server.

I'm trying to setup a home web server using a D-Link router and a linux apache web server.

I succesfully set up the apache server and if I connect to the IP address I assigned that computer, I can see the test page for the server.

Any suggestions as to what isn't working or what I should look into?

Hi all,

My company are currently considering setting up 2 servers in the office. One acting as an apps/mail server & one being a web/ftp server.

What I'm wondering is the best way to set this up?

As far as I'm aware I can either run both servers through one router & assign both servers a static IP then use port forwarding to block port 80 on the apps server and open port 80 on the web server.

I believe another option is to have a dedicated ADSL line for the web server, so that there is no chance of any unautorised access to the apps server.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I was able to do it once before but now I cannot get it to work. As a server I use Bulletproof FTP server & SmartFTP as the client for testing, but when ever I try and connect to my No-IP name I get:

"A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond."

I setup BPFTP to use passive mode IP so I entered my No-IP name which resolves to my WAN IP. Next I went into my router CP and added 1024 - 65535 in both Virtual Servers & Application Gateways but I still cannot connect.

I've also tried connectin in my browser and other FTP clients.

A:Setup FTP server

You shouldn't need to open all those ports for your server. If your Bulletproof FTP server is running on a special port, you should only need to open that one. (default for standard FTP is 21).

You can also try using a second PC to connect to your FTP server from inside your subnet. This way you know your FTP is setup and accepting connections and you can be sure your router is at fault.

My question is:

1) how do i assign the ip address, wan address.... to give my pc a static address?

2) Is there any good and free ftp server program that is easy to configure? Pls link me to the site.

Hope someone can help mi on this. I am thinking of sharing my movies and software application. Thank you

A:setup ftp server

Go to NOIP and do some reading. This is a site that will assign an unchanging URL to your dynamic IP, which will allow you to have an FTP server. It has a client that regularly checks your connection and updates their DNS database with your current IP. There are other similar services, this is just the one I use.

I don't really have a recommendation for an free FTP server, but I'd be real careful what you expose to the net in any case. All you need is one security hole...

I am trying to setup an OpenVPN connection (from a Windows client) to a Windows Server.

I followed this tutorial, which is surprisingly the only start-to-finish tutorial that I've found.
I've replicated it step by step, but I am unable to get a connection ('connection to the client has failed').

I've generated the keys with easy-rsa for both Windows (which I have on the client) and Server (which I have on the server) and two config files - one on the client, one on server - which specify the server used port and server IP address, as well as pointing to the appropriate key files.

I have also consulted a friend, with a working OpenVPN solution and in his case, the keys files / certificates are located only on the server machine.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ? What am I doing wrong ?

The XP firewall option is unchecked and my 3rd party software, SYGATE, is set to allow all traffic. In GuildFTPd, I have 99 for the NIC. For the real IP address: I put the alias from "no-ip"(***.myftp.org). I can connect to the server if I use the 192.168.XX.XX address, but I can't if I use my WAN IP address, which is 68.93.***.***(got it from whatismyip.com), or my "no-ip" address. I have no idea why it is not working. Could someone please help me!

A:Help with GuildFTPd Server Setup on XP

You sound pretty computer literate so I'm assuming you know your ip address and just didn't want to post the whole thing here (which is understandable). The problem may be on the client software. Make sure it is connecting to the same port (if you use anything other than the standard FTP port - 21). Also do you have a dynamic or static IP? If your IP is dynamic you will need software to update your .no-ip.com URL, but if it is static you shouldn't have to worry about it.

Hello,

1) How to setup the server to regularly back up the websites and the database onto my computer.

2) Can this be done even though my computer runs XP.

3) Can I create a folder on my computer that the server thinks is the C:\ drive (or is that necessary)?

Thanks for your help.

Hello can anyone guide me on setting up a mail server on Suse 9.1. I am a complete noob to this, a simple instruction would be great.
Also do i need to spend money to get my domain name to something like [email protected] And where about do i start it from.
Please help me.

A:Need guide on setup mail server

SuSE uses Postfix by default AFAIK so just start with the basic setup from here: http://www.postfix.org/documentation.html

As for the domain name registration, looks like mephisto.com is taken and I doubt they would let you use their servers for relay
If you want to register your own domain name then your first stop should be your ISP - they may get you a good deal. Otherwise there are way too many companies offering domain registration for outrageous prices. Just make your pick

Reuel,
this problem has frustrated me to no end. I installed nt server for my home network (as you suggested a while back)but I cannot get one of the network cards to install. I have tried several different cards but I am not able to load the drivers. How do I get around this? Also, if you could kindly guide me the rest of the way through this I would appreciate it immensely!

I want to use this for home but if I use ntfs then win98 cannot recognize it but if I use fat16 then it defeats the purpose of using nt in the first place for security, no? How can I get around this obsticle and what settings should I use to (proxy etc..) connect the www. I am using dsl.

thank you

I need to set up a server to take the place of what is now a workstation doing double duty Down time at this location is not an option I plan on a single workstation-type computer with redundant hard disks and an automated backup system that images the hard disk every couple of days as well as backs up the mission-critical for with setup server Need recommendations redundancy. data every two hours to an external device This Need recommendations for server setup with redundancy. will be the primary Next to that computer will be another computer built with the exact hardware as the first It will not be connected to anything It will not even be plugged in It will be there in case of a serious hardware failure on the primary system In the event of a failure on the primary the hard drives in the primary will be physically moved to the secondary Cost is one of the least factors Does anyone see holes in this idea Is there a better way nbsp

Hi,
I have moved a file server and 2 PC's to a new premise and I have setup a new router to connect to the internet. I have managed to connect through BT business to internet using standard DHCP.
However, I need access to the file server from home. I was using a VPN at previous premises where the broadband was supplied.
Do I need to get an external static I.P. address or is there some other way I could access the server on a regular basis.?

Hello there!

So I currently have a Linux server all setup over the LAN, and it works as a storage device and, I currently have a LAN web page.

How can I broadcast my server over the internet? So that I can access it from the internet, as well as view the web pages that I have made?

Is there a guide on how to do this? I would love to host my own web site.

Also, how would I go about getting a domain name for my server?

is there a way to get around port 21 restriction from my isp
system is on a comcast cable setup modem to linksys router to 3layer switch
to ftp server
is it possible for clients to log on to port 21
on my router change it to another port to fool the ISP

listen port 21 to port 5353 like that
so inside of using ftp.m7l.com:5353/ they just need ftp.m7l.com/

A:need help with FTP server setup with UPnP forwarding

You could do anything you like with your router but the fact is that none of the packets headed for port 21 will never reach your cable modem or the router - they are blocked by Comcast gear long before that.

You could set up some sort of a proxy outside the blocks of your ISP of course.. Or maybe just call Comcast and ask for the port to be opened?

I would take a look at your router/access point/whatever it is that supplies your wireless. I'd be willing to bet it has some 'firewall' style functionality, and separates your wireless and hard lines into two separate networks.

Do i need to contact the Hosting company? ISP? or no-ip.com?

A:exchange server 2003 setup

You have to configure exchange to allow relaying for your domain, you have to forward port 25 on your router, you have to make sure your ISP isn't blocking port 25. That's all I can think of right now until I get some more information.

okey dokey. I have just set up a Windows 2003 server. I have a typical Linksys router currently maintaining DHCP. I have tried to implement the server DHCP by first turning off the routers function and then activiating the DHCP on the server. When I do this the network computers do indeed receive IP addresses but can no longer connect to the Internet. How do I alleviate this little nusiance.

Thanks...

A:Server 2003 DHCP setup

You need to add a default gateway to the DHCP on the server. This will more than likely jsut be the IP address of your router.

Yahoo doesn't have a POP server for free accounts.
To be able to send and receive mail you need at least a POP & an SMTP server. Usually your ISP will provide you with an email(s) address as part of your package, as well as access to usenet groups.
EG: pop.isp.com, smtp.isp.com, news.isp.com, etc

Since SuSE 8.1 the distro includes Cyrus imap, and it looks like you have it working enough that it answers you on the proper port. There are specific setup examples in the /usr/share/doc/packages/cyrus-sasl/doc and /usr/share/doc/packages/postfix directories. These should be able to get you well on your way. I'm sure we can help if you have specific issues later.

is gigabyte network worth it?

and for accessing the files away from the office, would you recommend setting up vpn for everyone to access? if so, which vpn service and how? if not, should i go with some sort of ftp server setup? any suggestions would be appreciated. its been awhile since i have done this. thanks.

I am playing on making one of the two a server. Here are the questions:

1. Will I have to remove the router from the setup since I will be using one as a server.

2. Should I get a static IP address?

3. Should I get a faster connection other than my current ADSL?

4. What would be the hook up configuration so that my other computer would still be able to access the internet.

A:Best practice for network setup on new Server 2008 R2

The dual NIC setup with 2 networks is generally set up if you are running an ISA server as well to port forward and manage internet traffic. If you already have a firewall just set it up with one port for LAN traffic. You can also use a second port as a fail over NIC or you can team them to combine the bandwidth with the NIC management software.
