IE6 error with retaining password/cache/cookies for certain websites

Q: IE6 error with retaining password/cache/cookies for certain websites

One of our users has IE6 and is having a problem where some websites are retaining the saving of passwords, while others prompt him. He would like to have it save all his passwords, but unfortunately we cannot reset any of his security settings.

Anyone happen to know how we can do this without resetting his security settings?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I believe the enable saved passwords option is in the content tab, auto complete options. Unless this has been disabled by your IT department.

gang this one bugging me; IE10 on 64 bit Win 8, oem'd via HP.
Checking the Content tab of IE settings, it SHOULD be remembering logins/passwords, but in fact is hit/miss.
for instance: as long as I do not logout but merely close IE, the login will persist so that by hitting the link again I go straight to the inbox, not to the filled-in credentials login screen.
however with a couple of other accounts, no matter how I exit, once the browser is closed, the credential info seems to be lost, or unapplied. its as though I'm doing a first-time login.

anyone know what's going on here?

thx

So I don't know if it's A An issue with Firefox B An issue with Windows C An issue with my new laptop Out of computers I regularly use on a daily basis and on a weekly basis this is the only computer that has issues where I have to clear my cache and cookies ATLEAST once per day Otherwise certain websites don't fully load For example I went to Hotmail com just now and it loaded a white page until I cleared my cache and cookies and it clear to and Regularly have cache cookies finally loaded properly Other websites like Gamefaqs will load however everything will be a jumbled up mess and no images banners will have loaded properly Clearing my cache and cookies for the last hour always fixes it Regardless of whether I have been to that website in the last hour or any website in the last hour Sometimes I have to clear my cache and cookies every minutes sometimes I only have to do it once per hour However I have yet to go hours without having to clear my cache and cookies atleast once I can still return this computer if need be though they'll give me a hassle for it But this is something I would expect to be a software issue Only I have no idea how to fix it Also no I have not tried other browsers yet I keep meaning to but this is a laptop I use mostly at work so I haven't gotten around to it Firefox is the only browser I've used as of yet Thanks in advance guys

Many suggest that we should delete browser cache/temporary internet files to increase system/browser speed. They explain that browser cache causes fragmentation of system drive very fast. So deleting this on regular basis will enhance drive performance.
But I am afraid if this really increase browser performance. I guess browser cache/cookie helps to load webpage faster because the browser downloads this files when we visit them.
Also deleting browser cache after each browsing session will affect those who have limited download option. Because once i experimented that extensive browsing ~3 hrs will increase the browser cache size to ~80mb.
So, please help me out of this. Because if it really affects browsing speed in a negative way I would prefer to defrag system drive after each browsing session rather than deleting cache.

Hi have done a quick search to see if this has been raised before and it doesn't appear so so here goes The other day gmail started complaining that my cache was full so I cleared it and increased the size to MB This did not stop the error so I looked a little deeper and the issue appears to be that IE is not caching anything at all - at least the quot Temporary Internet Files quot folder is empty This leads me to consider a permissions problem more cookies not will or IE7 store pages cache so as I have moved the Temp Internet folder to another partition I have set the permissions on the drive and parent folder to give quot everyone quot full control This has not resolved the problem Some files have IE7 will not cache pages or store cookies appeared which I think have come from Windows Media Player but websites are not showing up not even cookies rss IE7 will not cache pages or store cookies xml files have also shown up after a reboot from sidebar news gadget even though it's not running Is there another user security principal that requires permission access to the drive folder These symptoms exist on both the bit and bit versions of IE I am viewing unencrypted pages even though caching of encrypted pages is enabled quot Check for newer versions of stored pages quot is set to automatic Thanks for any words of wisdom Marv p s also having trouble reaching this site on my vista machine having to use XP laptop I get a DNS error even though the name resolves fine with PING and it won't show this site when using IP address either is this issue related

I was typing a report on LiveJournal late at night and 'forgot' to save it. I am very frustrated as this took me a very long time and consists of information I don't think I could re-write again.

Since the page was left open and edited for hours, I am wondering if either my laptop or my FireFox privacy settings saved any of that information.

I would pay good money to get it back. I am fairly advanced at computer fiddling, so any advice about digging through my laptops organs is fine.

It just looks like AOL's frequent crummy service.

The link you posted the address for is just their regular password verification page.

Do you have a popup blocker working? Although if properly working it should not, It may be preventing the main AOL page from opening as they try to open a popup before their regular page opens.

A:Cookies on websites

Welcome
There are several methods. The one that I use is ccleaner. Download ccleaner. You should use your computer for a few days and then go to the cookie section and decide which ones you want to keep. I particularly suggest this method because you should use ccleaner once a week to remove temp files, cookies, etc. It will help keep your computer running the way it should.

Not really IF you have a firewall and antivirus and you dont go to bad web sites. You may also want to have a malware app to run weekly scans for them.

Hello and welcome to TSF

what firewall do you have?

Try this:

Open up Internet Explore, click Tools, Internet Options, click on the tab Security and underneath 'Security Level for this Zone' put it on Medium.
Then click on the tab Privacy and under 'settings' put it on Medium. Click Apply then Ok.

Third Party cookies which are ad and tracking cookies can be blocked from installing on your browsers. Otherwise those cookies will get installed
when you visit almost all popular sites and most other sites.
How To Disable Third-Party Cookies In All Major Browsers

Once you have blocked the third party cookies from installing, you will need to remove the ones presently installed in your browsers.
You can do that using CCleaner.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Check for and remove adware using these programs:

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

This is a net privacy question not sure what forum is best but the mods can move it if necessary I am interested in a particular aspect of browsing privacy Most articles I can find on the web and features like incognito mode seem to be aimed at keeping your own computer free from information that identifies where you've been identifying this to people who examine your compute What I would like to do is keep the website I'm visiting from identifying me on repeat visits I realize I may have to enable cookies to get on such websites and typically they won't allow connections from Tor so I realize they are going to know my IP address browser version etc as well as setting a cookie on websites stuff use protecting and that on cookies identity my system But I would like to know if it's possible to erase the cookies reconnect from a different IP address and basically obscure the fact that I've been to the website before so they at least can't track me across multiple visits

A:protecting identity on websites that use cookies and stuff

I don;'t know the ins and outs of it but check into VPN. Virtual Private Networking. Apparently there are servers that provide you with an anonymous IP address and you can even pay the fee with an anonymous gift card.

You may want to ask the Mod to move this to Networking subforum as those guys will know more than I about it.

Hi,

I would like to be able to put a password or no access on the temp, cookies and history folders, so no other person but me can delete them.
Or-
Is there some way to get back all the history after they deleted it, to review it?

Everyone in house hold uses the same user on this comp, so is it possible? I do have a password on the start up of the comp, but everywhere else is all access.

I don't want to have to make other accounts and keep switching back and forth between different users to see what my kids are looking at.
(sneaky kids, when I'm not home they play then delete everything.)
Thanks -n- hagd!

Although you haven't mentioned any BSOD's, the info will provide us with some details so we can try to figure this out.

In general, a machine check is related to an error that's recognized by your CPU and reported to Windows. There's not usually much information in the error reports so we have to fiddle around trying to figure it out.

Most often these are either hardware problems (something's busted) or compatibility issues (either software or hardware).

I am really lost here. Running Win 7 Ultimate x64 (legitamate copy) with all of the latest updates/patches.

For some reason, I am "loosing" cookies on some of the websites that I visit. They have "keep me logged in", and they are checkmarked. Sometimes I am there for 15 minutes before I need to re-login, and sometimes for 4-5 hours. But sooner or later, I have to manually re-login.

The only way this gets "fixed" if I reset all cookies and this seems to fix this for day or two and then back to same issue. The strange thing it is not happening on all websites, but on like 20% of 'em.

I really have no ideas what to do and I must stick with IE8 for compatiblity reasons with some of the JAVA applets that I am running.

Any advice?

A:Logging on to websites with a log in and password

Hi, welcome to TSF

Website login details are usually stored on your computer in small text files called cookies. Check your browser, firewall, security software and Internet Options to make sure cookies are not being blocked by any of them.

Hi all. I recently upgraded from xp home to xp pro, although I dont know if that matters, as I am not sure of exactly when this problem started. Anyway, some websites I go to for banking and such have password prompts or pages. When I click on the link to go to the members page to enter a password, it is as if I entered the wrong password and I am taken to a page that says invalid password entered, or whatever page the site has set up for passwords that do not work and deny entrance. IE wont even bring up the page that allows me to enter the password, it just skips right by it. It this a new bug or does this have to do with upgrading to xp. I have all the latest patches and stuff, and never had this happen before. Thanks! Norman.

Within the past couple of days I can not connect to any website that requires a password. I can access any other website fine.   I am running into this issue on both of my computers, one w/ Win 7 and one w/ Vista.  The Win 7 computer has facial recognition so I don't have to enter passwords  - I know it is not an issue of using incorrect PW.  On both computers I get message saying log in credentials could not be verified or something similar.  I am running ESET antivirus on both computers.  Could this be an issue with 10/14/14 Microsoft updates?

A:Registry Needs Repair / Cookies Cookies And More Cookies

Unless you know what you're doing I would stay away from the registry. Cleaning your registry is unlikely to improve your computer's performance in any noticeable way and you run the risk of really screwing up the operating system.

  Hi,
I used to be able to locate bits of files that were "temp" or not saved because they were written on a site (Like this question for example) or because the program/page failed in some way and lost my text... by searching for "~" tilda
or #, that doesn't work on Edge...
I can't find the Edge temp user cache, and the search function doesn't seem to search for text in a file only names of files, despite having search full text selected.

What can I do to locate something I lost due to site crash?\

Help.

Sorry for what may be a simple question but I cannot figure out how to reset my computer to allow certain websites that I frequently visit to allow
automatic entry of screen name and password.

Laptop was recently repaired after suffering a major virus, now when I choose a website and enter my information I am no longer asked if I want the information saved, so everytime I use the site I have to retype my information. I've tried allowing cookies, and changed a few other settings but I really don't have a clue what I am doing so I'm afraid to venture too far.

I use AOL and IE 7.0

I am running Microsoft XP.

My nephew was into some porn sites that really messed things up. I ran iS3 Stopzilla and it did remove 19 Infections.

Later in the day I went back to go onto the internet and things started to happen.

First I could not connect to the internet at all. Each time I tried, I received the "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage" i.e. yahoo.com

I ran the diagnose connection and indicated that I had to contact my ISP. I did that and thing worked ok for a little while. Then things just returned back to bad...

Bottom line is 1. I do not know how to do DNS Cache Cleaning, 2. I also have 2 error code's, Ox2afc and error code 80072ee7.

I have tried several time's to do a system restore and I keep having the same problem.

I hope that someone can help soon.

Thank you for your time.

I am in the process of deploying IE11 out to my network of Win 7 boxes. In my test office the person that does online ordering is having to reset all their passwords on all the sites that have secure checkout. Most cases don't require the page to be put in compatibility mode and a reset of the password fixes it. Is this to be expected or is there something I can do to prevent this going forward as I don't want a flood of calls when the rest of the people that do ordering in other offices go through the same issues.

My connectivity has never been Cache DNS error Resolver an issue at my house I ve lived here for about six months until very recently I ve always had two connections in the Network Connections folder one that was more or less useless but impossible to remove and another that was related DNS Resolver Cache error to my ethernet card and was the connection I would use About a week or two ago a third connection suddenly appeared there without warning named Internet Connection under the category Internet Gateway It has almost nothing under the Properties tab and describes itself as quot This connection allows you to connect to the Internet through a shared connection on another computer quot Since the day that appeared my connection has randomly gone out on me usually for the first time within a minute or two of my first attempt to use the internet after starting up At best it still runs slower than it did before When it goes out I try to repair it and always get the error quot Unable to purge DNS resolver cache quot The only way I can force it to work again is by disabling the connection I ve always used then re-enabling it and repairing Sometimes it works the first time sometimes it takes a few tries It never lasts for very long though The funny part is that it seems to impact random programs I play online games and if I m connected to a game when DNS Resolver Cache error the connection goes out the game connection isn t really impacted except for maybe a lag spike here and there However if I log out and then try to log back in it doesn t let me That struck me as kind of strange I have tried screwing around with this new quot Internet Gateway quot that randomly appeared disabling it enabling it checking properties and settings which led me to absolutely nothing one tab with no useful information When I try to check the entry by double-clicking it in Network Connections this is what pops up I have no idea where it came from or how to get rid of it I ve read on other sites that it can be eliminated by going to Add Remove Programs gt Windows Components gt Networking Services and killing it there However it s not even there all I have under that tab is RIP listener TCP IP services and Universal PnP So I m stuck with a lame connection until I can figure out how it got this way and how to fix it I think that this Internet Gateway is the center of the problem although I m not exactly sure how Couldn t just be a coincidence that it showed up the same time the problems started If you can help me out with this problem I could use any information you have Thanks a heap Cheers nbsp

A:Trojan.cache.cache Removal Problems... Please Help!

Please print out or save this page to your desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Notes
Update Ewido Security Suite, Do not run it yet

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Boot Into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

View Hidden Files and Folders
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Potential Uninstallations
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

I have the same error with google Chrome and use Ccleaner regularly but the problem remains. The problem has only occurred since I installed Windows 10. You may think "Well, just uninstall Windows 10..." and that's fair enough but, having done that once already, nothing worked at all (no updates, no security system, drivers were deemed outdated) so I re-installed Win 10 and have this to contend with every day.

Anyone got an idea what it could be, or how to solve it?

Help . . . .I have the blue screen . . . . I did the diagnostics test and it says Error code: 0700-0120 Msg. No cache detected. Cache might be disabled, defective or not present. . . . .How do I fix this? . . . . .

A:Error: 0700-0120 No cache detected

Make and Model of PC?

Some bios's have the ability to disable L2 cache, you might look in the bios, be sure it is enabled.

Most of the time it is a bad motherboard, look at the capacitors on the motherboard, if they are swollen or leaking, it is time for a new PC most likely.

Hi all!

Few weeks ago I built a PC and worked fine. So I built another for a friend with the only difference that I used a different GPU and RAM, but I don't think they are the reason behind my issue. I have come to a point where I don't know if it is a problem that I can fix here or if I should send back the CPU or Motherboard.
The sudden restarts get worse gradually since the OS installation. Memtest and Prime95 didn't crash or show any issues.
Please help me!
? OS: Windows 7 pro 64bit SPK1
? Original installed OS on system: Windows 7 pro 64bit

? CPU: AMD FX4300 quad core
? Video Card: Sapphire Radeon 4870 512mb

I just bought a Netbook a couple of days ago and it was doing Windows updates and I left to go somewhere. When I came back, when I started my computer, I couldn't start Windows normally. Instead, I got a blue screen error that said that there was something wrong with my cache_manager. How do I go about solving this problem?

A:Cache Manager Blue Screen Error

Please provide us with the system specs. Cache Manager related BSODs usually refer to an insufficient amount of memory or RAM installed on the machine, or failing RAM and/or hard drive, bad device drivers or something starting up in Windows that is causing this. Also remove any USB devices you have attached to your system and see if that does anything. If that resolves the issue, then install the latest driver for that device and run Windows Updates.

Are you able to get into Windows at all after restarting the machine by powering it down and then up using the power button, if you have not tried to get into Windows again? If you are able to, then I will need you to go to C:\windows\minidump in Windows and copy and paste the files of that folder to an empty folder on the desktop. Copy the contents of those files and include them in your next post. If you do not know how to read the contents of the dump files then go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263/en-us

We will be able to be better troubleshoot the issue once you provide us with the dump files.

According to that log, it looks like your processor is dying. That is very rare however. Usually hardware failings can be caused by extremely high temperatures.

There are 3 causes of laptops shutting off:

-High temps
-Bad power cable/battery
-bad processor/ram

Use speccy to see what your temps are and post a screenshot here of it:

Hi,

When I booted up my desktop computer today I could not get online or retrieve my email. Running Windows XP PRO, and using Firefox & Thunderbird. I have a wireless router setup, and I can access my email and get online. So, I took the router out of the system and plugged the cable modem directly into CPU. I can now get online except not on my ISP website or access my email via pop3 from same ISP server.

Under Network Connections in Control panel, I disabled connection, and then enabled connect. Then I right-clicked and clicked repair. Received error" Task could not be completed because the DNS Cache can not be cleared.

I called my ISP to see if they could help, and they said they could not.

I would appreciate any help.

I guess the question I have is pretty simple but if someone could go into detail about it I would greatly appreciate it.

When it comes to hard drives, other than the obvious cache size what is the difference between a HD with 16MB cache and one with 32MB cache, and will I be able to notice the difference during gaming or high load situations?

I am building a new machine so any info would be awesome.

Thanks.

A:16MB Cache and 32MB Cache??

as you probably know the bigger the cache the more data the HD can have ready for processing , there was a general feeling after tests i saw last year that anything over 8MB made very little differance in terms of hard drive performance

and as for gaming you certainly wont see any differance in performance unless you have a low end rig and very little memory and i dont suppose your gonna be building yourself one of those

that said my knowlage only really stretches to gaming as for other apps , video editing etc im thinking a larger cache may be an advantage , if its not too much more go for the 32 , if your building a glorified X Box get either

Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help me.

My girlfriends Dad deleted cookies and temporary internet files through internet explorer. Now there are a series of application errors being flashed on screen saying that the PC is running low on virtual memory.

As a secondary thought I downloaded and ran spybot on his system and uncovered a mass of nasty stuff that I'm gonna get rid of. I intend to download HiJack This and CWShredder to get rid of the spyware, cookies etc.

Could this be the reason the virtual memory error is now being displayed or could there be some other underlying cause.

Any help would be extremely gratefully received.

Thanks

Hi! I am using HP 15-ay007tx laptop. I have observed a curious charging behaviour with my laptop. I kept the laptop for charging overnight and in the morning it showed 100% charge. I switched off the laptop (shut down) and left it unused for the day. In the evening I again started it and checked the charging. I did this for 3 different days and it was showed 87%, 90% and 88% on each of these three days. Is this a common behaviour? Or is my laptop/battery faulty? I would really appreciate some advice with this. I purchased a laptop with vista pre installed, there is a product code sticker on the laptop itself. I am a XP fan and would like to install it. I would however like to retain an option of reverting back to vista. What is the best option for this?

1. If I could get hold of the Vista installation disk could I use the product code from the 'sticker'?
2. Could i use norton ghost to clone the operating system already set-up on the system?

A:Retaining Old Operating System.

Make and model of the computer?
Does it have the option to make recovery disks?
Does it have a recovery partition?

Yes, you can use a disk cloning program to do this - but I'd make sure that you have a set of recovery disks "just in case".

I've just installed an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe system, and having some issues. I have four SATA drives and a SATA DVD drive attached.

My boot drive is installed in SATA1.

For some reason, it sticks SATA1 as the last item in the HD order listing, so that when I boot, I get a failure message. Go into BIOS, stick SATA1 as the first HD, save and reboot, and all is well... until the next reboot.

Why is the BIOS not retaining the HD order?

Thanks for any help!

Last week I got the Sality virus. I have no idea how, but it gutted my computer by infecting just about every executable file on the hard drive. No great loss, since I can just reinstall all my apps after a virus scan, but I figure this is a good chance to start from scratch. Unfortunately, I don't have the means right now to back up the 80gb or so of files I have no intention of losing, and since I haven't done a fresh Windows install in a few years, I'm a bit uncertain about the procedure. What would be the best option for me to reinstall Windows, while retaining my important files which are on the same hard disk?

A:Reinstalling XP - retaining old files

You need to have a disk partitioning software (mine is Partition Magic). Make a new partition for your new OS...

Hi Guys

I know this is a vista question but i thought someone will be able to help. I am having problems with a few users laptops at work. They have been recently upgraded to vista. Everytime their laptops are rebooted they lose their printers and they cannot add any printers. I have to uninstall "client for microsoft networks" then reboot and then reinstall for the network printers to show up and work again???

Can anyone help me on this, i haven't seen this problem before and have tried everything and looked everywhere for an answer

cheers

are you on a domain or a workgroup? Using AD? Group Policy? Roaming Profiles? We need some more information to determine how the users are logging in since it seems therein lies the issue.

Something screwy is going on with my system. I installed Registry First Aid Agent and put in my registration code and it runs fine, however when i shut down my computer I have to reenter the registration code every time. I thought it was a flaw with the software but now I have installed two other programs and have exactly the same problem.
To add to this, I have found that no matter how I set my history settings in Explorer it will only retain Todays history.
I also tried changing my sound default settings via the control panel. The changes take effect but when I shut my computer down (the right way) and turn it back on the old settings were back.
Date and time is correct on my system so my cmos battery is still good,
Are these problems related? What could be the cause? Any suggestions?

I've been approached by a member of our admin staff who is trying to produce our monthly newsletter. She is using Publisher 2003 (on an XP client to win 2003 server).

Her problem is that every time she closes the letter (after saving obviously) and opens it later, the content is still there, but the formatting is all wrong, i.e. the images have become overlapped with text, and the formatting of the text has changed.

She came to me with this problem last month, and I looked for answers but couldn't find any by googling and hoped it was just a transition problem from office 2000 which she used previously. She redid the letter and saved it, but it still seems to have this problem.

Any ideas?

I'm having an annoying problem where I like to keep my "My Computer" folder set a certain way, with the View set to Tiles and Grouped by Type. This has been fine but now every time I change these settings in another folder the "My Computer" folder changes to that as well. Any ideas on making the settings stay the way I put them?

This is in Vista x64, Service Pack 2

A:Retaining folder preferences

Hi Phil,

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do this in Vista (well, there is, but it doesn't always "stick" - it tends to revert to the template defaults or change as you change other folders no matter what you do (though I seem be generally successful for the most part - it seems to typically work most of the time)). There's no "trick" or registry modification or anything like that I'm aware of that will solve this when it happens. It's a very common complaint.

Go to go Start / Control Panel/ Folder Options / View Tab and make sure the box Remember each folder's view settings is set. That's about all you can do on a folder-by-folder basis and generally works for me (as far as the View only itself goes). The rest can only be altered by changing the templates - and that pretty much does it for all folders of that type - not just the individual ones.

Here's some information I've put together on changing folders that may be of some help (though the above, as limited as it is, seems to be the best and only option on a folder-by-folder basis).

Here's how to change the default template for a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70819-windows-explorer-folder-view-settings.html. Default behavior is to select the template based on the first type of file placed in the folder (it has to choose something). Vista sets the Explorer window view settings and folder type template according to what folder types are in the window. This will show you how to reset the Windows Explorer folder view settings, turn off Automatic Folder Type Discovery and increase the folder view cache to have Vista remember the view settings, folder type template, size, or position of a specific window for when it was last closed at the specific path location.

This does not work with the sub Save As, Open With, Open in New Tab (Internet Explorer), etc.... type dialog windows through the File menu bar item though. These do not seem to be able to have their size or position remembered. For these, you can use the inexpensive ($8) program WinSizeMe http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2339650,00.asp to resize them and save those sizes and locations (I've changed the program from the one mentioned in the article because although it is a Vista article, the referenced 3rd party application there does not speciically speciify it is compatible with Vista whereas this one does).

Here's another article on how to change the Windows Explorer columns and sort order in Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/108665-column-customize.html. This will show you how to add, remove, move, change the width, and change the sort order of Windows Explorer columns to how you want them.

Here's another article on how to change the default folder view in Vista (but it claims it isn't a perfect solution and may revert to prior behavior so it's not as good as the prior links provided - but it may help if nothing else does so it may be worth a shot): http://news.cnet.com/8301-13880_3-10019957-68.html.

I hope this helps with your situation.

Good luck!

Hi folks new member here Been using XP happily for years never wanted to 'upgrade' hardware, xp Upgrading retaining many old software applications installed Recently disaster struck when the Mainboard or CPU died No problem I thought computer could do with a bit of a speed up anyway After some web searching discovered that my current cpu mainboard combo is no longer available anyway understandable so looked into new kit Upgrading hardware, retaining xp Found the mainboard that looked right regards to number of ports Upgrading hardware, retaining xp correct DIMM Upgrading hardware, retaining xp type USB etc This is an MSI board with FM socket so picked a modern CPU to go in it AMD When the gear arrived in the post I decided to check the mainboard CD to see what chipset drivers were supplied etc etc but discovered that the support was for Windows and upwards - no XP This started alarm bells ringing and after more web searching it seems that my new CPU AMD A K doesn't support XP either I guess my point is that if your old computer needs fixing or even replacing the new stuff won't ALLOW you to keep Windows XP Not only are Microsoft pushing you out and now Google Chrome but mainboard and CPU manufacturers seem to be doing the same thing by not providing XP drivers for their hardware You might even need to buy new software applications as well Any body got any similar experiences I am currently talking to my component vendor to see if there is any older kit still available that I can swap with them Not happy

A:Upgrading hardware, retaining xp

It's completely normal and inevitable. Manufacturers can't justify the time, effort and cost of developing and testing drivers for superseded operating systems. As MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 and 9.x fell off the radar, the same thing is occurring with XP.

This has been happening for a while and I really hope somebody here can help me. I use an Acer laptop (Aspire 3690) with Windows XP. Whenever I "change" anything in the desktop or taskbar (meaning move an icon, change the quick launch width or the shortcuts on it), it goes away at the next system restart. This got so annoying I actually downloaded a quicklaunch bar replacement program (freelauchbar, I think), but it doesn't help since, when I restart the system, the old bar is back, since it doesn't retain the settings.

Can somebody please help me solve this issue? It's starting to get ridiculous.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 2001 Toshiba Protégé with Windows 2000. Then on top of that I loaded XP pro. Then I deleted win 2000 from my start-up menu. My question is how can I find win 2000 in order to remove it from my computer entirely? I suspect the very shadow of win 2000 is causing me internet connection problems and I'd like to never see it again. Can someone out there help me? Thanks.

A:Removing win 2000; retaining XP

If you actually did an overlay installation of XP, the only solution is to reinstall XP clean.

When installing XP clean you would delete the C partition, then create a new C partition to clean install XP on, this is all done by booting from the XP CD.

I have installed a new harddrive put a booyable version of XP pro on it and then was going to do a user account transfer from the previous harddrive, then the problems started.

My original harddrive ( also has XP pro on it) started to blue screen. In addition a chkdsk on it failked done to unrecoverable errors.

Now I really do not want to reformat the original drive and loose my old emails etc, how can I proceed.

What I would like to do is reinstall XP on it but have that installation pick up and allow access to the old user accounts, and do all of this without loosing pers data files, is it possible??????

Other solutions to just getting access to the old drive would be nice.
Many thanks in advance, polspe.

first verify that a correct jumper is set (master/slave), second try booting the old one and if it boots successfully and that the new HD that is set as slave is detected, you can now copy your files....

I am working with one of our clients that our application is (which is a click to run) on an image that they created. We were experiencing some issues error performing certain functions on the machine. The UAC slider was at the very top, we changed the
UAC setting to the second from the bottom and restarted and the application started performing as designed. The problem is that now when we changed it back to the top the application is still performing as designed. If UAC settings is isolated as the problem
why wouldnt we be experiencing the issue again with the UAC slider at the top. I am a help desk technician with limited knowledge security policies and procedures. I was wondering if someone could shed some light on why this occuring and what the key differences
is between the different UAC levels.

Hi , I'm using windows XP and often i'm looking for files or copying things using 'my computer' icon. Each time i go into the 'my computer' thing to copy or look at files, i get the same horizontal layout (showing drives and files horozontal across the screen)
Each time i must click on view...>. explorer bar ..> folders and then i get the list of folders that make sense to me showing them vertically and with a + sign denoting that they have subfolders. Even though i have 'retain settings' when returning ticked in the 'tools' menu. I keep losing the 'folder' setting i entered last time i ventured into 'my computer'
It might'n sound much... but ive been doing this resetting this for zoncs.
Anybody know how to keep the folder style permanent? Regards ......jim t

I have the following COUNTIF that is working just how I want it to. Problems come when trying to copy the formula on down. The formula is:

=COUNTIF('Sheet1'!$B1:$B1048576,"=A1")

When I try to copy the formula down the column, I get this:

=COUNTIF('Sheet1'!#REF!,"=A1")

Two issues here that I put in bold. First, I'd like to retain the cells referenced on Sheet1 when copying and second, I'd like the cell A1 to change to A2, A3, and so on.

Any help is appreciated.

A:Copy COUNTIF while retaining reference

Welcome to the forum

If you want your range to be the whole of column B then you can type B:B (or $B:$B if you want it to be fixed). For your criteria, you currently have "=A1" but if you change it to simply A1 then when you drag the formula down the column it will change to A2, A3 etc.

So your formula will look like this:

=COUNTIF(Sheet1!B:B,A1)
