I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello I get three popups without fail every time windows starts. Please see screenshot - http://g.imagehost.org/0164/MyDesktop.gif1. AVG popup - This shows up whenever the PC starts and periodically after 10-15 minutes of using the PC (no specific trigger noticed). However a full scan shows no infections or warnings.2. Cannot find script file... popup. This popup started showing after AVG detected VirusCleaner.vbe as a threat and moved it to the vault after I gave the go-ahead.3. Project1 Run time error x. You see 5 in the screenshot, the the error number varies randomly. All these started when I put my pendrive in a virus infested PC and then put it in my PC. I was careful to scan and clean it up, but it appears the virus still managed to leak in.

Hi cheenu,Try the following if you haven't already, as it may show if there's any malware AVG isn't picking up. Have you run any other scans?Step 1: AFT CleanerIf you're running XP, please run ATF cleaner according to the following instructions. If you're using Vista, please skip this step and continue with step 2.Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.Click the Empty Selected button. If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select AllClick the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select AllClick the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".Step 2: MalwareBytesPlease download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.MalwareBytesMBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable security programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.Step 3: Next I would like for you to run an online scan calledBitDefenderNote: You can only run this scan with Internet Explorer with Active X enabled. Please run a BitDefender Online ScanClick I Agree to agree to the EULA.Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.Click Click here to scan to begin the scan. Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan... Read more

A:Infected with "DriverCure" popup, "quick scan" popup, and advertisements

Hello Unislynntastic , Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Finally, please reply using the ADD REPLY button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.1.Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not an option, Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.2.Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFixThis tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. Link 1Link 2 Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.Close any open windows, including this one.Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. Hello to_the_sun I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.I need to get some reports to get a base to start from so I need you to run these programs first.-Download DDS-Please download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:Download DDS and save it to your desktopLink1Link2Link3Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. Because you are running 98, I need to ask you to download the latest version of HJT. I quick-scanned your log, and I think that we need the latest version to avoid problems.

You can download it over the top of the current version. Do that, and post another log.

(I wouldn't ask this if it wasn't important. I'm really not a "details" kinda guy).

Hi,

I've been given a friends computer to have a look at (and in my opinion it is the crappiest install I have ever seen done by a PC company- custom bootloaders, moddified themes, bloatware all over the place).

When the computer starts up, a warning that this copy of windows is not genuine pops up. I suspect this may be the case- but what is confusing is that the popup is for Windows Vista Ultimate.

The copy of XP runs a (modified XP start bar, Vista Icons). I've checked that its not a themed copy of Vista (my computer -> properties, checked control panel and its style networking, dxdiag confirms xp). The version of XP is some 'Xp Ice'.

Why would the windows Vista "not genuine popup" in an XP operating system?? And how on earth can I fix it?

Cheers guys

A:windows not genuine popup - xp but popup is for vista :S

install a valid, genuine copy of XP.
XP ICE is a pirated copy someone has cobbled together using pieces of Vista, hence the Vista error.

Welcome to BleepingComputer sknebel Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder on the hard drive such as C:\HJT. Hi, I'm visiting my dad and Earthlink Popup Blocker pop-up are popping up relentlessly even though he gave up trying to get Earthlink working a long time ago.

I tried looking for it in Add/Uninstall and in Program Files folder but I can't find it anywhere. I searched on the internet for similar problems, which I found plenty of, but no fixes!

Is there a fix for this? Thanks much for any help.

A:Earthlink Popup Blocerk is the Popup!! Help

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I am getting 2 popups when I start my PC that have never been here before:(  Just started happening a few weeks ago.

I did have a virus, which someone on the Forum helped me get rid of.  I thought that might get rid of the pop ups too but it did not.

I am attaching a screen image of the pop ups.  Please see if you can help me.

On the Outlook profile - I try each time to click the radio button - set as default - but it doesn't appear to be listening.

Frustrated!!

A:snap, crackle POPUP after POPUP!!!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download CWShredder and click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

Download LSPFix and run it. Click on calsp.dll on the left window and click on the arrow pointing to the right. Click Finish and follow the prompts.

Download WinsockFix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it. (Quick note: use this program if your connection becomes broken during any of this.)

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\prutcct.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\WinCtlAdAlt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\prutcct.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\macos\system\sys.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

New.Net
Windows ControlAd

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Getting the cookie bar on this website again. This time I followed the link to a UK web site...https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-pecr/cookies-and-similar-technologies/. While the site does use a secure connection it is placing cookies on my machine and not notifying me of the fact, or asking my permission, LOL. While I do not allow third party or session cookies as a normal course of action I do normally allow first party cookies. Hypocrites, do as we say, not as we do. Q: Cookie

I did my ActiveX just the way you told me and I am getting an error. I posted a question and no one, including the person that told me to set up my controls (YOU) have no clue. Because no one answered I reposted. So sue me! You are being very unprofessional and if you want to block me, that is your choice.

A:bad cookie

Just to see if it's a browser related issue, try this:
Make sure Firefox is closed. Press Win+R, type firefox.exe -profilemanager and press enter. Make yourself a new profile and try the site.
Other passwords are still saved?
Make sure to post back.

Hi,

Can't get rid of the '64.111.196' cookie that keeps showing up on Xoftspy and Malwarebytes scans.

It is hijacking my google search almost always.
Any help?

A:64.111.196 cookie won't go away

Hiya

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.

Click Close to exit the program.

I was scanning my system with Bitdefender and I got 3 cookies detected as viruses. (Cookie.Rub, Cookie.Mediaplex, and Cookie.Advertising.) What is the deal with Cookie.Rub?

A:Cookie.Rub

Rub is a cookie.Cookies are small text files stored in the browser on the user's computer, when visiting web pages.Cookies store information that can be used for several purposes: to personalize web browsing, to gather demographic information about how many users visit a page, to monitor which banners are displayed to the user, etc. These uses are not, in theory at least, malicious. However, keep in mind that the misuse of cookies could threaten an individual's privacy. Rub prevents access from programs to websites of several companies related with security tools (antivirus programs, firewalls, etc.).Rub redirects attempts to access web pages of certain banks to spoofed pages, with the aim of logging information entered by the user in these pages.Rub redirects attempts to access several web pages to a specific IP address.See PANDA

We use a feature of your browser called a "cookie" to assign a "User ID." Cookies, by themselves, cannot be used to find out your identity or the identities of any of our users. It only identifies your computer to our servers when you visit our site. The most noticeable benefit of this is not having to "log in" every time you visit. ( can any1 here explain how this works and are they allowed 2 get your pc id and is there a way 2 block these sites from getting your computers id )

I don't think it's cookies but you could put that site in his trusted zone and see if that helps. I believe you can also set it to always allow cookies for that particular site too.

A:Cookie Saver?

In addition to what you're already using, I'd suggest Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D.Please read this tutorial on Spybot S&D before using it. Spybot can do SERIOUS damage, if not used properly. We also have a tutorial on using Ad-Aware SE.Sorry, but I don't know of any good 3rd party cookie managers.I just use the one in Firefox, and it does all I need.

A:Just one last darn cookie!!

Hi jrobin,

Glaswegian had given you a list of downloads. This one will take care of that cookie for you along with many others:

Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, and save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
Scroll down to the download section

After installing the latest Microsoft patches that were released on Tues I noticed that all my cookies being installed after the update have weird file names such as ENV8RRRH. Prior to the updates the file names in the cookie folder were listed as user [email protected] with a file name you could recognize such as user [email protected] This was helpful in determining what cookies to manually delete. Now you have to open each individual cookie file in notepad to try to determine if I want to save it or delete it which is a real pain. I don't want to delete all the cookies because some I need such as accessing my bank account log on information. Anyone have an explanation on why this format was changed in IE9 and if there is a solution.

A:Cookie File Name

Welcome
I think that you are more interested in saving your important cookies, and deleting the uninportant ones. I feel the same and handle it this way.
Download ccleaner
Check the cookies category for deletion (there are two) untick system temporary files.
Use the computer for a while, go to your sites and make your bank deposits, buy your stocks etc. Then go to the cookie listing and right clikc both columns and then click intelligent scan. The garbage cookies will not be touched but the valid ones will be saved.
That being said, I would make a scan with malwarebytes and my anti virus, just to be sure that the cookies that appear constantly are not malware
Good luck

Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me about it.
When you post your reply, do not use the button but use the button instead.
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.Now let's get started ===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Please allow me some time to review the information you have provided both here and in your previous post. I will post back as soon as possible.

When I searched for only the first part, go.microsoft.com, I was taken to this http://search.microsoft.com/search/search....st=b&View=en-us.Which is the search page for Microsoft. Have you visited it lately? I do not know what the last part (serviceswirchung) means. While on the MS search page, I searched for the text using a few variations. Came up empty.

A:Cookie Fest Going On?

Hello sloopercat,What kinds of cookies are you getting? Tracking cookies, third party cookies? I encourage you to read the following about cookies.Tracking cookies are not a threat, but there are privacy concerns. Tracking cookies are a kind of third party cookie. You can read more about the kind of cookies and how to block unwanted cookies in IE in the in this post: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...st&p=702871The links he provides will tell you how to block third party cookies in IE.You can set up Firefox to block unwanted and unneeded cookies this way:Click on Tools --> Options --> PrivacyMake sure there is a check mark by "Accept Cookies from Sites." Then in the box just below, make sure the window says "Ask me every time."What this will do is that every time a site wants to put a cookie on your computer, a little window will pop up asking you if you want to accept it. The first time it shows up, click on "Show details". From then on, except when you reinstall Firefox or in some instances update it, the details will always be shown. There you can see who wants to put it on your computer and whether it is a session cookie or a permanent cookie. You can add the site to your black list or white list by putting a check mark Use my choice for all cookies from this site and clicking on Deny which adds it to the black list or Allow for session or Allow. The latter choice means that any permanent cookies will stay on your computer until they expire or you delete them. The former choice means that the cookies will always go away when you close your browser. Either way, the sites will be added to the white list. You can see what cookies are installed by clicking on the Show Cookies button on the privacy screen where you set the cookie options. When you click on Exceptions you will see the list of sites blocked from or permitted to set cookies. You can manually add sites to the block or allow list here, and you can also remove sites from the list.Security programs such as Spywareblaster - prevents spyware from being installed on your PC. - Tutorial: Using SpywareBlaster will add many sites to the block list to protect you from tracking cookies.Orange Blossom

A:I Think I Have A Infected Cookie Or Something.

Cookies are text string messages given to a Web browser by a Web server. Whenever you visit a web page or navigate different pages with your browser, the web site generates a unique ID number which your browser stores in a text (cookie) file that is sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from that server. Cookies allow third-party providers such as ad serving networks, spyware or adware providers to track personal information. The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and prepare customized Web pages for them. The type of cookie that is a cause for some concern are "tracking cookies" because they can be considered a privacy risk. These types of cookies are used to track your Web browsing habits (your movement from site to site). Ad companies use them to record your activity on all sites where they have placed ads. They can keep count of how many times you visited a web page, store your username and password so you don't have to log in and retain your custom settings. When you visit one of these sites, a cookie is placed on your computer. Each time you visit another site that hosts one of their ads, that same cookie is read, and soon they have assembled a list of which of their sites you have visited and which of their ads that you have clicked on. They are used all over the Internet and advertisement companies often plant them whenever your browser loads one of their banners. Cookies are NOT a "threat". As text files they cannot be executed to cause any damage. Cookies do not cause any pop ups nor do they install malware. As long as you surf the Internet, you are going to get cookies and some of your security programs will flag them for removal. However, you can minimize this by reading "Blocking & Managing Unwanted Cookies" and "Block Third-Party Cookies in IE7".

One of our Members, Jacee, posted in Seven Forums about this great software. It allows you to easily choose what cookes remain on your system. Spying has become very common. I send emails, about travel and trips and then get spam about Motels in that area. I suggest that everyone investigate the applicability of this software, for themselves, and then take the appropriate course of action.

A:tracking cookie

Most cookies are benign in nature and not a cause for concern. You will find that every session of browsing will ultimately lead to some cookies being placed on your computer.

However, if you wish to get rid of these there are many programs that will delete them for you. I personally use this:-

SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

Select the Free Edition, install and then run the program.

Alternatively, depending on your browser, you can select the option to delete all cookies when your internet session is over and you close the browser.

I usually have my internet settings to prompt me before saving any cookies. My husband was on the computer the other day and a whole lot of ads got on the computer and a kalvsys virus or something. I think I got everything off and the pop-ups have stopped, but it won't prompt me before saving cookies anymore, it just automatically saves everything. I'm assuming something in my registry is messed up and I don't know how to find it, or fix it. If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

A:Cookie Problems

Before you start tweaking your registry make sure in your Pop-up Blocker Settings you have checked both boxes in the "Notification and Filter Level" area. In case you have forgotten how to do this (with so many new features happening in XP SP2) click tools in IE >Internet Options>Privacy and at the bottom of the page you will see the Pop-up Blocker area click Settings.

I am using IE 7, having just installed a new XP on a new computer. I read in HELP that my cookie folder should be at C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Cookies. There's no folder labeled Cookies there. I assume I can sort my temp files and find them (I cleared out my cookies before I tried that), but am wondering why the folder isn't where it should be? Thanks for your help.

A:Where is my cookie folder?

Here's the thing about the cookies folder: it's a sham!
Here's why I say that: in old versions of IE (4 and 5, maybe 6 too I don't remember), the cookies are both in the Temporary Internet Files and Cookies folders. If you go to your cookies folder, and delete all the cookies by hand, they actually stay in the Temporary Internet Files folder!! You actually have to remove them from Temporary Internet Files to remove both instances. In later versions of IE, the cookies folder doesn't exist anymore, but you can still find your cookies in Temporary Internet Files.
It's normally in
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
You may need to enable viewing of hidden files and folders to access the Local Settings folder though. To spot the cookies, click on view, and pick details, then sort it by name. All the cookies will have names like cookie:[email protected] and be text files.
Another quicker way to get to Temporary Internet Files in IE7: Go to Tools, Internet Options, under Browsing History pick Settings, then click on View Files.

This is only if you want to delete select cookies by hand. If you want to delete all of them, go to Tools, Internet Options, under Browsing History pick Delete, then click on the Delete Cookies button.

I should mention there are third-party freeware utilities out there that allow you to manage cookies in IE (seems like a feature IE lacks - Firefox has it without any third-party plugins)

My work computer got upgraded from IE6.1 to IE7. I can't find where the cookies are kept now. Tried 3 things with no luck:
1. from IE 7 menu: tools-internet options-settings-view files and it goes to the same dir as IE6.1
2. from Windows Explorer: right clicked on the local settings directory, gone to properties-general-and unchecked hidden
3. wrote a cookie and then searched for it by name

I am sure cookie values are being used and that new ones are being made.

1. Where are they on IE7 ?
2. How do I get to them ?
3. Are they not being written to the disk and just in memory ?

IE on work computer was upgraded from 6.1 to 7. I can't find cookies anymore. Tried these things with no luck.

In IE7 Tried tools - internet options - settings - view files and although I get a display of the same dir as I did in IE6.1, there's nothing in it. "0 objects".

In Windows Explorer I right clicked on local settings-went to c:\documents and settings\...\local settings - properties and unchecked hidden.

In Windows Explorer I searched for a cookie by name and did not find it.

1. Where are the cookies ?
2. How can I get at them ?

You might want to ask your system administrator. It is possible they disabled them.

I have been using firefox for about a year now, gotta say i love it. but this problem happens for both firefox and IE. Im going to initally blame it on the norton trial i had, but ill leave that up to you to decide.
When i use my website or any other website i get really unstable cookies, they work temporarily, some of the time. This prevents me from: administating phpbb forums, listening to internet radio and many other things.

I had just uninstalled a norton trial when it started, i did find a temporary solution which is to clear all cookies, but the problem returns about a day later. Im thinking it has to do with the excess security of norton.

anyway, thank you for your assistance.

A:Big Cookie Problems

Since the problem exists with Fx and IE, it would seem not to be anything to do with them but more something affecting both. If it only started with removing Norton, then I'd agree that it has to be a suspect. As I understand it, Norton can be a bit of a job to remove entirely and maybe vestiges of it being left over could be causing the problem. Look up 'norton removal' on a search engine for suggestions. The 'Norton Removal Tool' and other methods are mentioned. I'm not a Norton user so I'm not sure if these removal methods rely on Norton being installed to work, or if they will act as a 'clean-up' tool after Norton is uninstalled. Perhaps others might advise on this.

Do you have a 'System Restore' point available from a time before Norton Trial was installed? If so, perhaps try going back to that. This could return your computer's behaviour back to how it used to be. What security measures are you using now? If they were installed after uninstalling Norton and you use a restore point that was created before it was installed, it could be necessary to re-install current security (and any other) programs.

I have a cookie being created approximately every 30 seconds.  The contents are:
proxyhttp://localhost:15710/proxy/0/localhost/{a seemingly random number with a length of 37}*
Example: proxyhttp://localhost:15710/proxy/0/localhost/0359387507230194743297903373030194743*
Would anyone happen to know what this is doing and if this is suspicious behavior?

A:Suspicious Cookie?

It seems these cookies are related with your proxy.
If you worry about it, use the Network Monitor to make a network trace see if you can find any clue.

Sadly I can't log on to "My Ebay" page and a couple of other sites which I log into, I can access the home pages it's just the log in sections I can't access.

I've tried deleting my cookies in the Internet Options area, but I still can't log in, does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do next or what the problem might be?

any help would be really appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

It will leave a cookie and it will download the images on that website. To prevent that, you can use something like this:

Try clearing your cache, and your cookies.
Also go into your cookie cache, and make sure all cookies for studiVZ are gone:
Tools / Options / Privacy tab / Cookies / Exceptions... button

Once everything is cleared, re-start Firefox, and try to get on studiVZ, again.
Also, try adding studiVZ to your exceptions list.

However I am unable to delete one in particular which is titled '[email protected]' Spybot will pick it up as a problem and says that it will be deleted but when the temporary files folder is checked it is still there. Try uninstalling IE7, then reinstalling it.

Try cleaning all previous cookies. Maybe there is some 'corrupted' cookie that is not being replaced but not being recognized.

Uninstall/reinstall Java as well, see if that helps. Using SunJava, of course.

Hi,

For the last few days my PC has been loosing the cookie for my ISPs homepage when re-starting or coming out of hibernation. This happens with both IE8 and Firefox. I have contacted Trend Micro support but so far none of their solutions have been effective. They have also analysed a Hijackthis log and concluded there was nothing sinister going on.

This only happens to the Optus (my ISP) cookie, but Optus are denying any problems.

I have originally posted in the XP Support forum, but one of your folks suggeted I post here.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Rob.

A:Cookie Problem

Hello -

I hate to give you a runaround, but I have my doubts about a cookie issue like that being malware related. I would ask back in Windows section, or in Internet Explorer subforum.

That said, you would need to post logs as indicated in the link provided by Speedster if you want help in this section of the forum. We work from logs as well as issue description.

HijackThis is woefully inadequate for many of today's infections. We don't use it as our initial analysis tool.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link I'll give you below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a
Quote:

Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? First Steps

link at the top of each page.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed. I currently have as many open topics as I can effectively handle; this will have you back in queue with the proper logs so an available helper would be able to assist.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

I have a tracking cookie that keeps re-appearig even after I remove it each time. The cookie is cgi_bin(1).txt. I have SpywareBlaster, but it doesn't seem to prevent this tracking cookie. But Ad-Aware detects it and removes it.

How can I prevent this cookie for good?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have been using cookie wall and I love it. It won't work with Firefox.

The only cookie manager I found for FF is cookie culler with an optional icon. It doesn't look like quite what I'm after.

What I like about cookie wall

Small pop up about every cookie
Able to "temporary" accept in order to log in.
I can then delete the cookie, block it or always accept.
It's easy and fast to change where I want the cookie.

I have to be able to delete a cookie , as I don't like being tracked.

Not even Ccleaner was able to find and delete yesterdays FF cookies.

So is there any other cookie managers for FF?

Do you use Cookie culler and, do you like it?

A:cookie culler

Firefox has a built in cookie manager. Simplistic, but it's there.

Click on "tools" > "options" > "privacy" and set those you want or don't...

I block most myself, except for sites I trust, and I dump all at the end of every day.
(I've a System Mechanic program that does that for me.)

I didn't add the cookie culler to Firefox myself as I didn't need it.
(It's not really an extention to Firefox but an enhanced add on.)

I am trying to understand the term quot cookie enabled quot and how to achieve this I do understand about cookies generally and the importance of deleting cookies occasionally but especially after banking etc I even know how to do this via Settings - Internet Options - General - Enabled Cookie Delete Cookies and I am quite attentive to doing this However I have looked at an on-line university course which requires that my PC be quot cookies enabled quot I suppose for interaction between Cookie Enabled my PC and the university's system but I cannot relate on the one hand to regularly deleting all my cookies and managing on the other hand to retain a specific one for a linkage to the university I have searched high up and low down but have not been able to learn how to create and maintain an individual cookie while regularly deleting others Does this make sense Can you help Thanks in advance PS I am such a neophyte that I'm really not even sure if I'm posting to the correct forum Apologies in advance if I've not done this correctly

A:Cookie Enabled

Not all cookies are evil, and not all should be deleted on a regular basis. Many cookies contain sign-on passords, or are used by the site to maintain valid information about your position on the site.
You should be able to enable cookies on whatever browser you are using, but have the browser ask for permission before allowing a cookie. Your browser should also allow you to view all cookies and make individual decisions about which to keep and which to delete.

I'm using a Mozilla browser and XP Home The last time I ran Lava Soft's Ad-Aware there were no malicious stuffs but a number of benign cookies it did not remove which I understand I have one for my bank etc etc The other day checking with Travelocity for an airplane ticket I noticed the price went up the second time I checked the flight I did Cookie Questions........ it again with a different flight and suspect Cookie Questions........ the price is higher if Cookie Questions........ they have the cookie Can anybody tell me if I'm right about this I have my Firefox set up to remove my private data everything on the checklist is checked but it leaves the benign cookies Is there a way to go into my system to determine what cookies are present and to select which if any to remove from there Also someone told me there was a free or a reasonably priced download that once installed would quot crunch quot every time a cookie attempt was made ask what to do with it and allow stuff like cookies from the bank or the bill pay service Thank you

A:Cookie Questions........

To view your cookies go into Tools/Options/Privacy/Show Cookies and then scroll down the list of cookies and remove the ones you don't want/need.A good extension to have is NoScript. This Guide on How to Allow/Block session Cookies in Firefox might be helpful.

Hi

I am new to this forum.
I have written a small code in ASP.Net using VS2008 for generating cookies. Everything working fine cookies are written and can be retrived by program. But I can't figure out where physically cookies are stored on my PC. I am using Win7 ultimate and IIS 7.
I searched it "C:\Users\cook1\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies" according to one thread in this forum.

But there I found only 1 file index.dat.

I tried on other location also but not successed. Plz help me to locate physical cookie.

hi deb081900, welcome seven forums

did you try to go into folder options and uncheck "hide protected system files" to make it show up.

Hope this helps.
