I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Somehow I've managed to do something that prevents me from entering the Local Area Connection Properties window. When I do I get a message, "The controls on this property sheet are disabled because one or more other property sheets are already open. To use these controls, close all these sheets and reopen this one."
Who ever hear of property sheets? At this moment I can't access the internet due to (I think) an impoperly set component in the Local Area Connections window. Thanks, I think, to McAfee putting a Firewall component in there.

Puzzled and Frustrated.

A:"Property Sheets" in Local Area Connection Properties

When you right-click on an object, i.e. Local Network Connection, and select Properties, it opens the Propertiy Sheet for that object. You may be correct that the firewall has controll of the properties for the NIC and therefore the system won't open the properties again until the first instance is closed. Try opening your services from the Computer Management MMC and stop the McAfee services relating to the firewall. See if you can then see the properties of the network connection. If so, you have found the culprit. What to do about it as it will probably take control again when the services are restarted, I don't know as I don't use McAfee's firewall. If you can remove it, Agnitum has a free firewall that works very well. I have satelite connection and have not had an issue with either doing what I want or getting hacked.

Hello all - I just purchased a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R motherboard, which replaced my ASUS P5Q that died.

After I loaded all of the drivers (using Vista x64), the first thing I noticed was my LAN connection speed was signifcantly slower than on the ASUS. So I started poking around in the Realtek "advanced configuration" properties. I changed one item:

1) Flow control - from "enabled" to "disabled"

After making the change my speed jumped significantly. However, that brought me to the question of if I need to change any of the other settings? Are there settings to be made for ultimate LAN performance?

A:Local Area Connection Advanced Properties...

First off, why not use a broadband router? They're cheap, and they do this job MUCH better than ICS. If you must use ICS, try this repair first.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Hi

How do I disable local area Connection properties for a standard use and for an administrator on a pc, users on my network keep changing the network adapter settings to allow them to have access to the internet. The users are a little tech savvy so by setting the adapter settings and just leaving out the default gateway and dns server address has not helped. I need to go deeper into windows network configuration to find a way to block them or find another way to prevent internet access. None of the users have email so they do not need access to mail either.

Thank you

Hello Have just installed Windows and is using it for a few weeks After installing and uninstalling various programs i have found out that whenever i view Local Disk Properties of any hard disk C for example the default tab in view is NOT the General Tab Normally whenever u bring up the Local Disk Properties you get the General tab as default meaning u see them first of all after opening the particular window however for my case it is this in default "General" Not Properties: default tab Local Disk view. as showing view instead http img imageshack us img menucr png General tab has gone to this position http img imageshack us img menu s png I know that this is kinda petty and does not affect functionality operation in any way but i hope that there is a registry edit fix to make the General tab the default view again I will not be reformatting at all since the hassle Local Disk Properties: Not showing "General" tab as default view. of reinstalling Local Disk Properties: Not showing "General" tab as default view. Windows and data is too great for this issue nbsp Regards nbsp

A:Local Disk Properties: Not showing "General" tab as default view.

Hi Johnson111,

Check if the registry key exists:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\ShellEx\PropertySheetHandlers\{5F5295E0-429F-1069-A2E2-08002B30309D}

If the above key does not exist, please perform the steps below to add the key:

1.     Click the "Start" button, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar, right click on the "regedit.exe" found in the list and then click "Run as administrator".
2.     Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\ShellEx\PropertySheetHandlers

3.     Right click the PropertySheetHandlers entry on the left pane, choose "Export", select "Desktop" in the "Save in" box and type "backup" (without quotation marks) in "File Name". Click "Save".

Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named "backup.reg". We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the "backup.reg" file.

4.     Highlight the above key, click Edit -> New -> Key, add this key:  {5F5295E0-429F-1069-A2E2-08002B30309D}
5.     Exit Registry Editor.

Please check if the issue can be resolved.

If the issue persists, please run System File Checker by the steps below:

1.     Insert the Windows 7 installation DVD into the DVD-ROM; Click Exit if the auto-menu pops up.
2.     Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

3.     At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Linda

Running XP on 2 computers. Have them connected by a router. I set the router IP to 192.168.3.1 Everything connects great! When I connect to a wireless network, it all connects, but doesn't work ("connection timed out" or "Page not found" errors. The wire connection shows an IP of 192.168.2.1. If I disable my Local Area Network, the internet connects perfectly. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I CAN USE MY LOCAL AREA NETWORK AND THE WIRELESS CONNECTION AT THE SAME TIME! Frustrating to the max! Any network specialists out there who can tell me how to fix this? Thanks!!!

You should know that x.x.2.1 is incorrect. For the router address shown, all devices that connect to it *must* be 192.168.3.x where x > 1 and < 255.

I would suspect that you have some static configuration data in the devices.

You want your router to offer DHCP in the range 2->32 (that's more than enough) and
you want all systems to use DHCP for the IP address and DNS settings.

Remove anything in the Alternative Configurations

You should first try resetting the router by holding down the reset button for 30 seconds, still holding down the button, unplug the router for 30 seconds, power back up while still holding down the button for 30 more seconds.

After that it's required that you go into the routers settings and make sure the wireless is set up correctly, you need to add SSID "name of network" set up a password to connect, then choose the security and encryption, WPA2 and AES encryption tends to work best with Windows 7 drivers.

After that check your wireless profile for this connection by going to the Network and Sharing center, look left for "Manage wireless connections" and use the same settings that you used for the router.

If you are still having problems please post the ipconfig/all from this machine and I'll have a look at it.

A:"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration" Error.

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

A:""Local Area Connection" Doesn't have a valid ip config

To start off I have to say two things.
Welcome to the forums,
Sorry about the length of time before a reply 23 hours.

In you Nic card setting is Tcp/Ip v6 enabled? If yes try to disable it, there are known issues with v6. If its not enabled enable it your router may be handing out Tcp/IP v6 address.
Have you tried to set a dynamic ip address on your machine yet?

If you dont know how to set one up I would be more than happy to help you with it.

what make and model of computer do you have do you have the user guide if so it will tell you if not need make model etc ie is it a laptop or desk top but this may help the cable you need is called a rj45 it looks like a large telephone plug and their is only one place it will fit so if you have a cable a little trial and error will help find it just do not force anything in anywhere

Hi. So I came back to my desktop after a weekend away, and all of a sudden my wired network has changed to "Unidentified Network" with no network access. I have never had a single problem with this before and I've tried several fixes that do not do a thing. I live in a dorm and am plugged directly into the wall. I also use a switch to use an Xbox One. I have tried plugging the PC directly into the wall instead of the switch to no avail. I've also turned everything off multiple times. Here is my ipconfig information
I'm not sure if this matters, but I feel I should mention that both my IPv4 and IPv6 Connectivity display "No network access"

Hey, so I have a problem and although i'm terrible at describing computer problems I'll give it my best shot. So one day I turn on my HP Pavilion dv6000 with Windows Vista x64 Ultimate and the internet would not work and it had been the previous day. The wireless connection switch is turned on and the light is blue, not orange, but my computer will not detect any networks. My little brother has an HP desktop with the same OS but he is not having problems connecting or finding the network so the problem is obviously internal to my computer. WHen i diagnose and repair it...i get the message: "plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection"." Again my connection is wireless and i have no idea how to fix this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone.
2 questions:

1) My windows 7 stuck at "shutting down". Doesn't matter if i'm restarting or shutting down. If i don't touch it, then i get a BSOD after about 10 minutes.

2) every once in a while i have no connection to the internet. If i troubleshoot, windows says there's a problem with my local area connection, but doesn't fix it. Only if i restart, and then troubleshoot, it resets my "local area connection" and everything's fine. I remember in windows xp i would just press "disable" on the local area connection, and the enter again, and it would restart it automatically. But i have no idea how to reset it manually.

Thanks!

can we see an ipconfig /all or the exact message you get when running

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

For Windows 8
To open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop. Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.
For windows version, XP, Vista, W7
Hold the Windows key and press R

Now type CMD

Now press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):
In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt
It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

Yes, I know there have been lots of people asking about this problem, and I've tried a few different things, but I just can't get the internet to work.

I'm pretty sure it's not the router, a computer with WXP works just fine, as well as Xbox Live. Ipconfig in command prompt came up with 169.254.187.196 as Autoconfig IPv4, if that makes a difference. My only active network is an unidentified, public network.

I've reset PC, modem, and router. Ping 127.0.0.1 was successful, so does that mean it isn't the NIC? The NIC is, I believe, a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet. I didn't have the option to rollback drivers so I guess that won't work =/.

Tried netsh int ip reset and netsh winsock reset.

Suggestions?
BTW I'm a total noob with computers and networking so I partially have no idea what I'm really talking about

The fact that ipconfig is showing the 169.254.187.196 indicates that the nic/wifi is not connecting with the router. You might want to re-boot the router and pc at the same time.

If that doesnt fix it you need to examine the advanced adapter settings.

Let us know so we can help you.

I'm running into an issue which is hindering the enjoyment I am getting out of my system. Quite frequently I am getting these issues where I lose connection to the internet at random times. I then "Trouble Shoot" problems with the connection and I get the fixed issue of: "Local Area Connection Doesn't have a valid IP configuration."

I've looked in several other posts, and nothing has quite worked out for me thus far. I have general medium level of understanding relating to computers. Hope to hear an answer soon.

Thanks in advanced.

Can you post a screenshot of your ipconfig /all output?

Or try this:

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click on the flush.bat file to run it as Administrator.

Your computer will reboot itself.

A:"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

I remember reading that many people had issues in the past with the Nvidia NICs and were disabling them in favor of PCI add-in NICs. If you don't have one to try, it shouldn't be hard finding a friend with plenty of them. It's worth a shot, if you have access to one.

Is your laptop running Windows 7? If not, it is possible (rare, but possible) that the router isn't compatible with Windows 7.

Hello, so I downloaded hamachi the other day to play with some friends on GMOD and I was finished with hamachi so I decided to un-install it, after doing so, I noticed Google Chrome, Mozilla, Steam and many more applications can't connect to the internet, but Internet Explorer 64 bit is able to connect... I don't know how to fix this and I've done a bunch of research on many ways to possibly fix it but none have worked so far... I use a wireless usb for my wireless connection, it works perfectly fine but my Local Area Connection keeps saying that one message and I just wanna fix it :/ please help?

A:Local Area Connection "Network cable unplugged"

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found, here's how

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type or copy and paste the following command:

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

and press enter.

Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus WiFi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here. For Vista and Windows 7, 8 you can use the Windows Snipping Tool

So a few days ago our D-Link router completely failed and the wireless doesn't work until the problem can a Connection" "Local doesn't configuration valid IP have Area be settled the only way "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration we can connect to the Internet is if we're hooked up to the modem with an Ethernet cable Of course only one person can use it at a time so if Person A needs the Internet but Person B is using it on a different computer then Person B has to unplug their Ethernet cable from the modem so that Person A can hook their cable and access the Internet on their computer However my Windows laptop seems to be the only computer in the house that cannot connect to the Internet even when hooked up with an Ethernet cable my sister's computer also a works fine and my Mum's Vista which I'm using right now in order to type this works fine My laptop is still able to connect to my work's wireless when I take it there so I don't think it's really a problem with the laptop itself The troubleshooter says quot quot Local Area Connection quot doesn't have a valid IP configuration quot and I tried looking up some solutions on Google to try and fix it but to no avail I tried following the steps from this video but that didn't work I tried the steps from this forum post by Tomken but that didn't work I did that quot unplug the router and wait a few seconds before plugging it back in quot trick but that didn't work I tried disabling the wireless on my laptop I can't connect to our wireless anyway since it doesn't work but that did nothing Tried unchecking the TCP IP under Properties for Local Area Connection but that did nothing I tried switching from the Ethernet cable I was using with my Mum's but that didn't fix it I'm completely stumped Any idea Also if I don't reply to your questions suggestions immediately it's because my sister is coming home from work soon and she'll want to use the Internet through her computer so until she's off the Internet I won't be able to get back to you straight away Really sorry

Hiya, I saw another thread with this title, but it wasn't much help.

I've had my Compaq PC with Windows 7 home for about 6 months, and I last connected to the internet through my Ethernet with no problems, as always, four days ago.

I made no changes then, or since, but now when I try to connect I get the above error message. I've checked the network driver and it says it's up to date.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Windows 7 "Local Area Connection invalid IP"

Hi,

Thanks for the post!

This issue is caused by an invalid IP. Let’s try to get new IP automatically.

Input cmd in search bar, run as administrator
Input ipconfig /release, then input ipconfig /renew

If it’s still fail, please input ipconfig /all
in cmd to check the result to see if the computer have a valid IP.

Does the computer connect to a network device? Such as router or switch. Please temporarily remove/replace it to check if it works.

In same sub net, other computers? Do they work?

Hey,

I'm having trouble maintaining a stable internet connection. The icon in the taskbar would randomly display a problem with the connection. When I go to click on the "X" on the network map to resolve it, it would go through a bunch of steps and eventually end up resetting "local area connection" adapter. Most of the time this would work but sometimes the computer would say it couldn't even find the problem.

Below are the current settings I've set for the adapter, but the problem still occurs sporadically.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

A:reset "local area connection" adapter

Then run in elevated cmd:

Code:
netsh winsock reset

So is it fully disconnected now ?
do you have another PC you can try on the powerline connections?

or can you move the PC next to the router and try with just the cable between the PC and Router ?

post an ipconfig /all
------------------------------------------------------------------------

ipconfig /all

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the information above those entries

For Windows 8 or Windows 10
To open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/open-an-elevated-command-prompt-in-windows-8/
Use Windows + X Keys together and choose Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.Or Right click on the windows icon - bottom left hand side - A menu appears - choose Command Prompt (Admin)[/indent]

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

do a tcp/ip reset
and also try in safemode with networking - see below

Safemode with networking
with a cable connected from PC to router
check the cable - see if there is a light on the router associated with the cable port used , also check if you have a green/yellow light on the PC LAN port (some PCs do not have any lights on the LAN port - so ignore)
- try safemode with networking (sometimes wireless does not work with safemode )
as the PC starts keep tapping F8 - a menu appears - choose
safemode with networking - see if that works

Windows 7 64bit desk top machine (not having any problems) just a question

In the Local Area Connections Properties dialog box there are quite a few items and all are checked (see image below), I know I can only "disable" them in Win. 7 as opposed to "deleting" them in XP, I am NOT on a "network" so I do not see why I need the following items "enabled"

Client for M$ networks
QoS packets Scheduler
File & print sharing
Link Layer topology discovery mapper
Link Layer topology discovery responder

Just looking for some input from this forum (if this is posted in the wrong area, let me know and I will move it)

Thanks

A:Local Area Connections Properties ?

To begin with, you're certainly part of some "network" right now, internet at the very least I suppose (correct me if I'm wrong). Internet connections are exactly the same as having other computers in your local network and many network components are needed in the same fashion. Others can be disabled or unistalled as aren't used for internet-only access.
Some of them can be completely deleted, others don't and only allows to disable.

As for the services you mention, "Client for Microsoft networks" and "File and print sharing" can be certainly disabled (you won't be connecting to other Windows computers anyway). "IPv6" protocol is also almost useless as of now, all internet websites use IPv4 with a handful of them accepting both.
No idea about the others.

I just moved to Peru for my study abroad. When I first connected to the wi-fi in my homestay I was successful. Suddenly, I cannot get internet access and it says it is an "unidentified network". I have tried manually inputting IP addresses, DNS, etc. I have tried forgetting the network and disabling my virus protection. I can't even get internet when I plug an ethernet cable into my computer, directly into the router. My laptop is the only thing that isn't working, other people's computers work and my iPod and smart phone work with the network. I have a Lenovo Win7 PC, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

A:Cannot get internet access on wireless nor local area, "unidentified"

Hello barooke Welcome to the Seven Forums!

The place to be is in the Control Panel>Network & Sharing Center. Note the image here.

Once you click on the link you will find the troubleshooting options for internet connection at the top as well as for network adapters. If you select the network adapters option select the "all adapters" option as well as the advanced which will see the automatically fix errors box already checked off.

You should be seeing a large red X right inbetween the network name on your laptop like unknown and internet when first opened. If the first attempt using the network adapters option works that will become a solid line as seen in the image there.. Clicking on the red X itself is the same as selecting the internet connections options which also sees the automatically fix errors box checked off under Advanced.

A:Dell Precision laptop showing message,"Local Area Connection Network cable unplugged"

If you don't have an ethernet cable connected then that message is normal. Since you apparently don't use it you can disable the connection in Network Connections to get rid of the nag.

It's impossible to guess what files might have been modified by the malware, the malware fighter, or the computer guy.

Does your wireless adapter appear under Network Adapter in Device Manager as OK? What, if any, warning or errors are there in Device Manager?

Assuming you are using an integrated wireless adapter is it switched on? Can you detect your network?

I have my internet connection saying it is connected but whenever I go onto firefox it tells me it couldnt connect.

ipconfig tells me it encountered an error, repairing connection tells me it can't get into tcp/ip settings. I have tried resetting winsock.

I'm currently not at my computer and I'm being forced to rush, so if you need more specific error messages just tell me and I will post with my phone.

Hello,

I started playing Xbox 360 again today, and i tried to go online, which apparently didn't work out anymore...
So i tried to fix things by checking my "Local Area Connection" on the pc, and it just disappeared?
I used to have it there before, now it's gone.
Probably because of reinstalling Windows 7 about a month ago?
I've looked up many threads, but nothing really applies to my exact situation, or i just end up not understanding them.
Anyone could help me out here?

Thanks already!

I have two HP Windows XP computers that are networked with a hub (NetGear-Fast Ethernet). The network (LAC) has been working fine until several days ago.

Both computers show that the "LAC-Local Area Connections" are indeed connected.

However, I cannot access web pages or shared folders on the second (guest or client) computer.

Thank you!

Dear All,

i have Dell desktop that's connected to a Sky router with an Ethernet cable.

I'm having problems connecting to the Internet. My Local Area Connection says "disabled" and when i click to enable it, it says "enabling" and then "enabled" but it still reads "disabled".

I can't connect to the Internet (I'm using my Laptop to write this).

can anyone help???

A:Local Area Connection "disabled"

can we see an ipconfig /all
anything else happening - maybe a virus
also try a tcp/ip reset

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

My computer illiterate uncle s computer is acting odd Well at least the display properties is Every time he tries to apply or even press ok the display properties window "OK" Properties pressing when "Apply" and/or Display freezing freezes no matter which tab he goes and what he changes The computer itself does not freeze and every thing else is perfectly able to run without any harm when the display properties window is frozen What I noticed and he didn t was that after a certain amount of Display Properties freezing when pressing "Apply" and/or "OK" minutes around or minutes the display properties becomes unfrozen and you are able to fully operate the window without any hassle When I end tasked the display properties it said that Rundll has ended or whatever the usual thing it says What I found odd is that when he would change his resolution the background would practically cut in half One part usually the top would stay the normal background picture and the other half of the picture would turn black I ve never really encountered this problem before For extra info he s using Windows XP Thanks nbsp

Hi, I need to find a fix for this issue I have with a change in Windows 8. I am running Windows 8 Pro and normally (in windows 7 and older) when I Right click on a folder, the default option for properties is "r". Nice and quick and next to my
left hand which rests on the left side of the keyboard. Now it has changed to "o" and not only that, there are 2 options for "o". Open and Properties. Very frustrating and not very easy to get around. Any way of getting around this whether
it be alternative software or reg hack or something... anything. Itsvery annoying.
Cheers

A:Right Click on folder and select "R" for Properties has changed to "O"

Well it looks like the US version oif the upgrade iso/cd is the version that has the r has properties. UK version is O which really doesnt make sense as open is O aswell so you have to press it twice then enter. I like my keyboard shortcuts so US version
is. Problem solved. language to install must read US (English) on the install screen.
Prolem solved

Hello,

To start off, I'm running W7 Home Premium from an Asus U47A. The issue I'm having began around the New Year's eve. If I remember correctly, the internet would suddenly disconnect whenever I was on Skype, which was annoying, but a quick reboot fixed it. However, it began to happen more and more frequently. Now, the issue has evolved into something worse. The internet stops working and it gives me the error messages I've attached below.

I've spent a lot of time looking around for answers, but I haven't found any that have helped. I've adjusted the settings on my N 2334, preformed a clean boot, ect, but I haven't been able to solve it as of yet.

Please help me!

Hello Everyone, its been awhile since i used revo uninstaller to
remove hotspot shield, but i did not realize it is still on the local
area connection properties, how can I get rid of it from there? Thanks

A:HotSpotShield Still In Local Connection Properties?

Right click the TaskBar and start the Task Manager. Go to the Processes tab. If you see any process for Hotspot shield, end the Process.
Use Hunter Mode in Revo to uninstall it.Uses of ? Hunter Mode? in Revo Uninstaller | Techdows
Now download Junkware Removal Tool. Run it, A DOS window appears. Press any key. It will start scanning automatically.
Now download ADWCleaner. Run it, Install it, Scan, leave everything checked. Clean. Both programs will show a text document when they are done showing you what it has removed.
Then download and run Temp File Cleaner Run it, it will shut down all programs and automatically restart.
If you still have problems,. Try this suggestion:

A:Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

When you are connected via ethernet cable and you get a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address, you have no connection to the network. Basically Windows will attempt to get an IP address from the network (the router assigns the IP addresses) and if it doesn't get one, it will make one up. Those made up addresses will always be 169.254.xxx.xxx.

There are some possible causes: the ethernet cable is broken (easy to check, just swap it out), the MAC address on your NIC has been blocked (this is something you'd have to ask your school's IT department about), your NIC card is failing (the card could be going out, one of the wires on the connector could be bent/mangled), Windows somehow got the NIC drivers screwed up (uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling the drivers may help).

Hi

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a Lenovo T510.

Every single time I do a Properties on My Computer, I get this pop up message that "Windows Control Panel has stopped working". Oddly, I just cancel that window and everything otherwise seems to work normally. But it happens every time and I can't figure out why.

Anyone else experience this?

Hi

This usually happens when you dont remove the software completely, some process are attached to the Windows Explorer ... thats causing this.

Try using Autoruns and look under Explorer... and look for file that highlighted in yellow.. usually should say "File not Found". Uncheck or delete these and restart you computer.

Try these and let me know.

Hello and thank you in advance for your help. I am a first time user and spent most of the night reading posting on this site. I was very helpful.

Enough said, I just ran into a problem with my display properties. It occurred after a virus attacked my computer and reset the desktop to a false "blue screen of death". I was able to remove it Ad-Aware SE, but once i was working with the computer again, I found that the tabs under "display properties" were missing. They included "Themes", "Desktop" and "Appearances". I already tried reinstalling XP and carefully reinstalling the ATI drivers, but i still only see the "screen saver" and "settings" tabs.

Thanks again!

Hi everyone -

Since the new year, I have observed in a few systems including the one I use most frequently, that a right-click on any program or file brought up in the start menu brings up only one selection - "Properties". And when selected, "Properties" brings up the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" screen - just as if I were clicking on the Quick Task bar itself and selecting Properties.

I haven't really gotten into this yet and before I do, I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced anything like this or knows what may be the underlying cause.

All virus and malware scans are clean; DSS incorporting HiJackThis are free and clear of debris.

Thank you. . .

A:Right-click Start menu programs only brings up "properties" option

Hello mate i had the exact same problem!

If you open the registry editor and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

There you should find a key called "NoChangeStartMenu".
Make sure the value of this is set to 0 and if not change it.

Also check here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You should find the same key "NoChangeStartMenu"
And make sure this is also set to 0.

Restart your computer and your problem should be solved.

Hello Speidy,

I'm not sure if that may be possible or not. However, standard users will not be able to change the computer name, so you could make everyone that you do not want to be able to change it into a standard user instead of administrator.

Hope this helps some,

Norton Ghost quot cannot read properties of the job error ec f f Cannot find external device My Passport quot We have visited this problem before but not come up with a solution Here s the history error "cannot ec8f1f62 properties" Norton read Ghost Years Norton Ghost "cannot read properties" error ec8f1f62 ago we set up a single Ghost backup job set to run at AM every day and had two identical external USB hard disks that were swapped each night The backup ran without incident for three or more years Finally one of the disks failed and we could not get that backup job to run on a non-identical USB replacement hard disk I thought it was because the replacement disk was not an identical disk Wrong Today I replaced both hard disks with identical new ones even the serial numbers are close together I gave both USB hard disks identical labels quot My Passport quot deleted the old backup job and created a new one The backup job recognizes only the disk that was in place when the backup job was created and fails with the error message above when the other identical disk is connected To be clear only one disk is connected at a time How can I overcome this problem nbsp

A:unable to open control panel or "properties" of My Computer

Can you get to the system properties if you go into Control Panel > System? (Classic View)

Also, you can try opening regedit (Start > run type "regedit" w/o quotes) and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Delete the keys:
NoPropertiesMyComputer
NoControlPanel

If the NoControlPanel key is not present you can find it most likely in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

As far as your log goes, please re-post it in the HijackThis forum section. Please click on the 5 Steps link below for instructions on posting a log. The HijackThis analysts will help you remove any additional spyware from your system.

PROBLEM: "unknown Users" are listed in Properties/Security of a folder.

I have Windows 7, 64-bit.

The Properties/Security box of my "C:\Users\[my name]" folder lists two Users called
"Account Unknown (S-1-5-21-879640176-2077098734-2292519611-1001)"
and, "Home Users", in addition to the legitimate Users "SYSTEM", "Administrators", and "[my name]".

After deleting the computer's Limited Acct, the 2 Users are still listed.

"S-1-5-21-879640176-2077098734-2292519611-1001" is not found by the Yahoo Search Engine. The Windows folder-specific search engine for "C:" and for "Users" searches essentially indefinitely. That for the folder named after myself finds nothing.

Especially regarding "S-...", is this caused by malware ? Would deleting either or both of these Users cause harm ?

Thanks.

A:"unknown Users" are listed in Properties/Security of a folder.

Account Unknown can come from a previous installation or from an account that previously existed but has since been deleted. And you will not find anything within the search engines about the long string of numbers because it is unique on most computers. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_Identifier

Howdy, folks.
I right click a link (.lnk), click Properties, then click "Find Target" and instead of folder with the target opening an Open With box opens. It has several programs suggested, but not explorer.exe. I have to browse for explorer.exe.

How do I fix this problem?

In Windows XP, is there any way to remove the list of "My Pictures" from the wallpaper (background) list in Display Properties? Every picture I've saved from the Internet and every picture I've saved from my digital camera appears in the list of background pictures that can be chosen from the "Desktop" tab in Display Properties. MOST of these pictures would be inappropriate as desktop wallpaper so I'd rather not have them as choices in the list (menu). In addition, there are hundreds of them! I don't want to delete them from "My Pictures" however. Thanks.

Try moving them from "My Pictures" to another folder...

Running Win XP Pro on a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 512MB of DDR 2700 RAM.

When I right-click on the desktop to make any changes (like wallpaper, or screensaver) all I get is the Display Properties box with no tabs.

The sheet displayed is Themes. The selected theme is Windows XP.

If I change the theme and click Apply, the tabs all appear. But if I close & re-open the Display Properties, I'm back to Themes with no tabs.

There is a similar post here already, but no one has posted any solutions.

Help!

Hey Fellow Techies,

I'm having an issue with a security flaw in Server 2008 R2, it should be a similar kernal as 7 so I'm hoping we can come up with an answer.

L.S.S. - When you right click on a shortcut and go to the properties box there is an option to "open file location" I want to either remove the button or disable it.

I have removed the "Open folder location" link from the context menu itself. I do not want to disable the properties tab completely due to users on occasion need file or shortcut information. This seems to be a big flaw in windows and the last way for users to easily access the C: drive, which I DO NOT want.

Thanks in advanced!!
