Taskbar not showing up unless I start taskmanager

Q: Taskbar not showing up unless I start taskmanager

Can anyone offer advice. . .Taskbar is not showing up when I start the computer unless I manually go into taskmanager. When I start the computer everything appears to load fine, but theres no taskbar. I can move the cursor and highlight any icons on the desktop, just can't click on them. If I control/alt/del to start taskmanager, then evrything seems to work fine. This started after I picked up a trojan and got rid of it. Apparenently it also go rid of some system files too. I've done multiple system restores, sfc, and still no fix. Short of doing a non-destructive restore to fact. default is there anything else I can do?

Preferred Solution: Taskbar not showing up unless I start taskmanager

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can anyone help? I had some malware on my computer and fixed it. Now, the computer takes longer to boot up and the taskbar does not show up. I can open a program on the desktop, but once its open I am not able to click on anything. The only way I can get the taskbar to show up is by opening up taskmanager. Then it mysteriously shows up. Can anyone help? Am I missing some start-up files that got deleted when I "fixed" my computer.

Hello Dianas, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I would say that the damage has been done, and it's time to format the hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Vista. Be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose first though.

When I restart my computer the only "extra icons" by my clock are my APC, Internet Icon and the volume icon. How can I get the Zone Alarm, AVG and other icons which startup when I restart my computer to show in the bottom right corner of my computer again?

Also, if I click on ZA it will add it to my taskbar area, but this doesn't work for AVG. I would like them to have icons anytime I restart my computer.

Thanks again for any help:)

I have windows vista, quad-core processer, 3 g ram....not sure if you need to know anything else.

A:ZA, AVG and other start up not showing on taskbar

Go to the program options and tell it to start up at start up or go to MSCONFIG and tell it to start up in the start up (get to it by start>RUN>type msconfig)this is for windows xp but may work for you : other one :

A:HELP!Start menu and taskbar not showing up!

Have you tried going to My Computer > Control Panel > Taskbar Properties. And uncheck "autohide" and checking "always on top."

If that doesn't work, then try moving the cursor to the bottom of the screen and right clicking. If you get a different menu click "properties" and then click "always on top," and uncheck "autohide."

I have windows XP home edition and would like to know if there is a way to put task manager on the taskbar so that it comes on with the computer starts. Would like to keep an eye on the percentage of usage my programs use on the cpu? I know it goes there if you click it on, and then minimize it.

Hi -

What is it that you are protecting your system from?

Your RAM is undoubtedly being eaten by numerous firewalls, anti-virus apps, other. . .

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Lavasoft Ad-Aware
Zone Labs ZoneAlarm
Dell DataSafe Online
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Plus you have Office 12 (2007) - a heavy resource app in itself, Google Talk and 7 Google Chrome Screens open.

You must get rid of ALL of the security related apps, then reset the Windows Firewall and choose one anti-virus app.

Use the induvidual product's removal tool -
Zone Alarm -->

Lavasoft As-Aware -->

AVG - you have both v7.5 & 9 installed -->

Run each removal tool; re-boot in between each

Reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply, OK

Use AVG 9 for anti-virus -

Please DO NOT post any further HJT logs.

Ok my sister is using compaq armada m700 window 2000 professional. The problem in that desktop is showing up but there are no icons no taskbar no start menu. only wallpaper. pressing alt ctrl del shows up taskmanager but there are no adware or other such processes running up only system processes, i can run programs through it and other things like softwares. i have gone through 20 to 30 forums trying various tips but nothing worked. Please help urgently. last thing she did was paste cliparts from cd to harddrive. thanks.

A:desktop shows up but no icons or taskbar or startmenu. Only taskmanager.

Open Task Manager, go to File > New Task (Run), and type: explorer.exe then hit return. If your desktop and icons appear then we know your problem is that explorer.exe doesn't auto run (and we need to find out why). If no desktop, then explorer.exe is probably missing or corrupted.

This references showing Toolbar rows Icons Taskbar 3 2-line Taskbar Large small using Quick Launch Bar icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a quot bug quot with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom I for a while now have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary left monitor When I first set this up it showed lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to lines on the standard taskbar This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works With pinned applications no matter what position I drop the icon the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and Taskbar Toolbar showing 3 small rows using Large Icons 2-line Taskbar below with or without grouping enabled The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications see aforementioned topic because they group together and launched apps come after in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mode To the point After an update restart the toolbar reset and only showed lines despite there being more than enough room for rows of small icons I couldn't figure out what happened or what changed and then I read the aforementioned topic after some searching to find it actually worked Moving the taskbar to the left then back down resets the order so lines can be used on a line-unit height taskbar with large icons I would like to see several things fixed - Fix the chaotic organizing system of the horizontal taskbar to match the vertical display mode so pinned-apps are always on one side and use all lines while opened apps read like a book Other people will likely have a different opinion to this suggestion and I'd like to read them - Fix the toolbar icon organizational system so all space can be utilized without needing to move the taskbar each restart or update I have yet to restart since fixing the issue and I rarely restart as it is but others may not keep their pc running stressful on components to keep restarting Again I'd like to read others opinions on this but I'm sure most will agree on this point that unused space shouldn't be wasted Here we see all rows in my quick-launch toolbar Unfortunately without restarting or receiving a new update I can't reset the toolbar back to lines which is fantastic and I didn't take a screenshot prior to moving the taskbar to the left then back down but for simple effect imagine the top lines visibly the bottom invisible and an arrow on the right for extra icons and that is the default view You'll likely be able to repeat the effect if you don't have a toolbar and try it out

I have a toolbar on my taskbar titled "Programs". It has about eight folders in it. I made another toolbar, and placed it directly adjacent to the Programs toolbar, to obscure the eight folders and force it to be a dropdown menu.

Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Here's what I mean in graphic form:

It's bugging me to no end. Anyone else had this problem/resolved it?

A:Toolbar on taskbar should only be showing an arrow but is showing icon

Hello thewonkits, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I notice this happens when using small icons for a toolbar. If you like, you could unlock the taskbar, right click on the dotted separator line to the left of the two top far left toolbars (one at a time) click on View and Large Icons, then lock the taskbar to see if that may look ok to you. It will make the top row a bit bigger though.

Hopefully someone may know a better way to hide that bit of icon poking out when locked.

Hey guys, I was wondering how I could have the "auto-hide the taskbar" option on but the taskbar still being displayed. Because I have my taskbar to where it's transparent and I would like the extra space from the auto-hide. This is what I want it to ultimately look like.

Hum don't know about that andos but it can be made small and personally I don't mind it being there and just to have them floating there would I think annoy me.

A:XP start up log, and taskmanager process?

SpyBot S&D only checks for spyware entries in Run section of the Registry and Startup menu. It does NOT list Services that MAY be critical to Windows or programs you do want (example, Norton AntiVirus).

Remediation: Suggest you download and use Process Explorer, which is a MS SystemInternals utility.

Just look at the screenshot and description on the MS page and you can see it's a much better Task Manager. Note that it does not replace Window task manager, just provides enhanced features like showing exactly which task is loading your system.

Note, the biggest gain is Process Explorer's search. You know, those error dialogs that popup saying "such-&-such DLL has caused an error and ...." Well using search in Process Explorer it will show you what task called that DLL so you have useful information.

Now using PE you have a better method of seeing exactly what is hogging your system. Especially if you enable the following:OptionsHide When Minimized
Allow Only One Instance
Confirm Kill[/B] (default)
CPU History Tray Icon

View, Select columns, Process Performance tab, select...CPU Usage
CPU History
Handle Count

I cannot run the error checking feature on my harddrives. I get a message that there are exclusive files being used by Windows and I can only run scandisk when it restarts. However, when I restart it, scandisk does not run by itself.

somebody told me I should run this to change the programs that at startup, but msconfig won't work.

Thanks in advance for any help, it is appreciated.

make sure you run a current virus check, heres a free online one.. then download, update, and run SpyBot (choose a different download mirror, the first one is usally lagged) then after thats all done.. go ahead and download, run, scan, save the log and paste the log of HJT. All of this will help us determine your problem..

In Win8.1 I managed to have at boot a txt files and also minimized, but I can't do the same with Taskmanager.
I have both the shortcut in C:\Users\Utu\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
What I'm missing?

A:How to start Taskmanager on boot and minimized

Create a text file with Notepad.
Enter this line in it : start /min taskmgr
Save it or rename the file as StartTM.bat (or anything you want as long as the extension is .bat)

You can either place this file directly in the startup directory you wrote above. Or create a shortcut linking to the .bat file.

It starts the TaskManager (taskmgr) and minimizes it just like you asked.

I've attached the batch file if you can't be bothered creating it by yourself.

After changing my keyboard settings, something happened with my taskbar so that it only shows two pinned icons, and I have to use these up and down arrow keys to scroll through the rest. This is incredibly annoying, as I can't figure out how to make it show all the icons again. My ThinkCentre button is hogging up the whole task bar, and any right clicks in the giant empty spaces right next to it will bring up options for the ThinkCentre.

Right click the left-very down corner (where it is the taskbar again under the start button) and uncheck 'Lock taskbar'.
Now u should be able to reduce the size of that toolbar.
If you can't right click again > toolbars then uncheck the specific toolbars.

There are some programs that when it is in full/maximized window, it hides everything from the desktop.
The program that i am using is Zbrush 4R7, and the windows 10 taskbar shows when the program is maximized, which it is very annoying, and because of that, many options of Zbrush that is at the bottom becomes unaccesible unless I go in windowed mode.
So, is there a way to fix this issue with windows 10, because I was a windows 7 user and everything works fine, except in windows 10. Thanks.

So yes.. let me explain my problem here.

Yesterday,I created a guest account and logged off to another, after that,my screen

went black and does not respond to whatever I pressed. Even after restarting my

computer,the problem persists.

Now,I had disabled the guest account through safe mode.

But in normal mode, icons, taskbars were gone, but mouse cursors and background

remains. I was wondering if this might have something related to graphic or something.

Also,I am not able to go to task manager,it goes black screen after I did crt + alt + del.

I am using windows vista x64bit

Please guys,I need help );

I've been using Windows Seven and Microsoft Security Essentials since November and have been fairly happy with it. But today is the second time now that I've started my computer and the Icon for MSE is not appearing on the system tray on the task bar. If I go and click it on the desk top and run the program it says the real time protection is enabled and it looks like everything else is fine, but I guess I'm just a little paranoid that it's not appearing on the system tray. The strange thing, I'll restart the computer, and then its there upon start up on the second time. I checked the thing in the task bar properties where it says "show notifications" and that such and it doesn't look like its been changed or anything. Just thought that it was kind of odd that it'll work if I restart it on the second time.

A:MSE not showing up on taskbar first time

The real test to see whether MSE is protecting you, despite the missing icon, is if the services are running.

MsMpEng.exe is the security engine, used by Windows Defender and MSE.

msseces.exe is MSE itself.

First, thanks to all for all the previous help; appreciate it very much.

Re the bar on the bottom, which I guess is called the Taskbar:

Have several icons on it, which is fine.

But it won't accept any more new ones if I try to drag some onto it.

I right clicked on the bar and pulled up the Taskbar Tab under properties.
I have the Lock The Taskbar box un-checked, and have also selected
Never Combine next to the Taskbar Buttons: line.

Seems like it's still trying to pin the icons to others, and Not show them visually as completely separate icons in the bar.

What might I be doing wrong ?

BTW: also, any way of having the icon names Permanently displayed next to the icon on top or below the particular icon ?

A:Showing Icons In Taskbar ?

Have you tried changing the size of the Taskbar Icons I have a pile of them in there and very little on the desktop now.
Relevancy 49.88%

After changing my keyboard settings, something happened with my taskbar so that it only shows two pinned icons, and I have to use these up and down arrow keys to scroll through the rest. This is incredibly annoying, as I can't figure out how to make it show all the icons again. My ThinkCentre button is hogging up the whole task bar, and any right clicks in the giant empty spaces right next to it will bring up options for the ThinkCentre.

Hello Yihwan,

It looks like you need to unlock your taskbar, drag the dotted lines separator just to the left of the blue circle icon (far right one) over to the left to decompress the other icons until the arrows to the right of the Chrome icon go away. After you get the icons dragged into the position you want, you can lock the taskbar again.

Hope this helps,

Im wondering if my computer is set to turn off the hd or something when the computer isn't touched for 30 min. would that have anythin to do with this?

A:taskbar not showing after waking from screensaver?

As far as it goes, there is a known issue with letting your computer sit for a period of time, and when the screen wakes, the mouse being able to move but the computer being unresponsive for a minute or so.

Try waiting a couple minutes and see if the computer become responsive, if so, this may be the same issue.

I've sought help, but no one seems to fix it. Really tired of the seeing double stuff. Could I have malware stuck somewhere? Is Conduit a culprit? My PC also likes to connect to an old network ID that has been deleted from my profiles. I had renamed the ID an my PC wants to keep that name. It's like it's mad at me or something. I have to manually reconnect to the new ID name. My PC is running Win7, and it's about 5 yrs old. My fan runs hot a lot though, and the computer shuts down sometimes. I really need help here. I recently converted to Windows 8(.1) from 7. When I had seven I'd play games in windowed (borderless) mode and tab out to my other monitor. It left behind a taskbar at the bottom overlaying the game I was previously on. I found this actually kinda helpful. Now in Windows 8 it only shows if I tab to a program on the same monitor as the game, and not if I tab to a program on my other monitor. Is there any way to change this?

It's rather full (2.2gb left from 74.4) but he's now deleting some files. Would you like a HijackThis report to ensure it's not a virus? Did a scan on McAfee and it's clean, checked CMOS/BIOS settings and it's not hot or overclocked. Any help'd be appreciated, if you need to know anything else about the computer ask away, it'd be great if you could help. :)

A:XP not showing explorer.exe taskbar, My Computer/My Documents

I had this problem before, and it was a virus. In fact, it was a trojan.
Every time I would reboot or start my computer it wouldn't show the desktop at all. So I would have to open task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL),
close explorer.exe ,and run explorer.exe, which usually does the trick.

There's always system recover, that is, if you have the disk.
And if you're worried about your data I would suggest buying a storage device or blank CD's or Dvd-R's and saving them there. But only save valuable data, like irreplaceable things such as photos, and so on. Music can be downloaded later, and programs too. Take as many as screenshots too. But that's what I'd do.

A:MalwareBytes icon not showing in taskbar Windows 7

Hi Jemi200,

If you right click on Malwarebytes and select 'Properties', then under the 'Shortcut' tab click on 'Change Icon' at the bottom. You should see the Malwarebytes icon there. Select it and hit OK, Apply and OK.

See if that helps.

Yesterday my Windows 10 was running fine until I came back from a shower.
I started up my computer logged into Windows and when I logged in the desktop was black and all I had was a mouse cursor. I opened task manager and I restarted "explorer.exe" but still nothing. I loaded up Google Chrome through the "Run New Task" option in the task manager to start looking up solutions. I've tried so many things, I've scanned for viruses and tried a few things I've seen on other posts.
For everyone else the solutions offered seemed to have worked but not for me.
One post suggested that it might be a virus that is inside windows files.
I don't remember downloading anything that day so I don't know if it can be a virus.
I need help.

I recently had to reinstall XP SP3.
I've swtiched everything to Classic view.
Now theres a section of my taskbar, to the immediate left of the system tray,
with a little icon and "Add Hardwar" and ">>".
When I click the ">>", up pop all the icon links to everything in Control Panel.
How do I remove all this?

On windows 8.1, my taskbar, one day, suddenly stopped displaying the audio icon on the taskbar. When I right click it, go to the properties, and click customize, it doesn't show the audio icon as an option. When I click, "turn system icons on or off," I can see the audio icon, but it is locked to off. I don't know where to look from here.

A:[SOLVED] Not Showing Audio Icon On Taskbar

Method 1:
There is no option available in control panel volume settings to show volume icon like earlier operating system. In Windows 8 and 8.1 you can enable volume icon by modifying ?Turn system icons on or off? option.
Right click on or near time clock in notification area and select Properties.

Make sure Volume icon is set ?On? as shown below, if it were off, make it on to show volume icon.

If the above step hasn?t help, ?Restore default icon behaviors? which may bring back the missing icon.

This is the normal procedure to get back the volume icon. In case the Volume icon option ( on/off) grayed out and you can?t change it, then follow the method 2.

Method 2: If volume icon is missing and you can?t enable it from ?Turn system icons on or off? area, then that could be an issue with explorer process. The following two methods can solve the issue.
a) Kill the explorer.exe from Processes or Details tab under task manager. Find out all explorer.exe and kill them, make sure no explorer.exe is running in the task manager. After that, on the file menu select new process or Run (or new tasks), type ?explorer? and press OK. It will start the new explorer process. That should bring back the volume icon, if it hasn?t, redo the method 1

This method has brought back missing volume icon on my Windows 8.1 computer.
b) Registry modification- Its recommended to take a backup before modifying registry.
Open registry editor in Windows and find out;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

After modifying registry keys, you need to kill and restart the explorer.exe process to take effect.

I had to do a clean install on a new hard drive and since then have not been able to get my task bar balloons to show. For example, when using the Safely Remove Hardware icon, I don't get the Now Safe To Remove balloon. I only get a popping sound. When running a Mcafee virus scans, I can't view the scan progress when resting the cursor over the icon. I do get the identifying pop up and that is all. I've tried the log off and on tip but it didn't work. Can anyone help me?

I'm a new windows 10 latptop owner, previously used windows 7 with the classic theme. In both win 7 aero and in win 10, I dislike how the use of alt-tab and hovering over taskbar icons shows a series of miniatures images of windows. This is a terrible user interface --- all my windows are dense with text and could be scrolled to any point, so they can't be identified from the image. What I need to see are window titles. Or in the case of alt-tab, icons. Win 10 does show the titles but not stacked vertically, making them difficult to scan by eye. Same with icons---they are tiny little things in a sea of useless image.

So can I change the win 10 theme to show a vertical stack of window titles when hovering over the taskbar, and to show icons when doing alt-tab switching?

It's been couple of days since I upgraded my system to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Everything is working fine except this nasty error. If I pin apps to taskbar or run apps , the app icons on the taskbar are shown as white square. And I am seeing the same thing on Apps & Feature settings list. The icons are there but as the backgrounds are shown as grey-white chequered pattern (for the transparency ), it looks like white squares. Rebuilt the icon cache but to no avail. And on the start menu everything looks fine.

This morning, my icons on the taskbar have suddenly turned into icons with names of open apps and tabs. I didn't change anything, but did recently have an update. After installing a new theme, I noticed later on that all the icons on the taskbar, explorer, and the desktop were missing. The programs all work fine, with the title showing, but explorer is very laggy and it's incredibly hard to navigate through my picture folder without thumbnails.

And for some reason, I cannot open the start menu from the taskbar.

I tried multiple system restores, and that did not fix the problem.

Thanks for answering, it's very much appreciated.

Hello and welcome,

You've done multiple system restores and get the same theme? Or what happens?

Click on start, and on the search bar type in cmd, once it appears right-click it and select run as administrator, upon the prompt type in sfc /scannow, it will request to scan on restart, do so.

Give an update please.

Yep, right click on the Taskbar, Properties, and you should see Notification area. Click on Customize... It brings up the Control Panel and you should see blue text saying Turn system icons on or off. Click that. You should see the battery icon and be able to change that to on.

If I update the BIOS on my Intel motherboard to any one of the three most recent BIOS's, my add-in Intel network card (located in one of the pci slots) shows up as a removable device in the taskbar (Much like a USB device; for example a passport removable hard drive or flash drive). However, the motherboard's network controller does not exhibit this behavior.

Intel support is telling me that it can vary as to how the devices are detected by Windows and that this is normal. I have never ever seen a pci slot card being detected as a removable device in the 20 years that I have been using Windows, so I was wondering if what they are telling me is a valid statement? It seems kind of scary that this is happening.
