Preferred Solution: Black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) Vista

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

A:Black screen of death with movable cursor after system restore

Pull out the hard drive and put it aside for now. Get a new drive and install it. Load Windows fresh. Apply all the drivers and Windows updates. Install the old drive as a second drive and recover your important files that way

Hi whapster,You should refrain from asking for help from others, while you are being instructed by another Malware removal team.It is a waste of both forums time and resources.Perhaps you should present your original helpers with your problem, because BC doesn't know what steps have been taken up to this point.I see you have a HJT log posted in the Misplaced HijackThis Logs forum. If you wish to have your HJT log analyzed, follow the instructions in the reply to your Misplaced HJT log Here.At this point, our HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. This topic will now be closed, since you have an open log posted. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM.

Any clues about the possible problem on the black screen - error message for instance?

If not, a fresh install seems the only answer (delete the existing partition & create new first though, to ensure it's totally empty (sometimes a format only won't be sufficient, so "nuke" that partition first to be sure).

Hello and pardon me if this error has already been solved I have been looking for hours and hours and haven't found a solution to my exact problem What happened is one day after booting up my computer it went to the login screen like normal then when I logged in it simply showed the black screen with a cursor I've had this problem before and I simply fixed it by opening task manager and running explorer exe manually and everything returned to normal Although this time explorer exe is already running on the processes list and if I terminate it and run it again or run multiple at once it does nothing Death Of blacK Screen (KSOD) and stays with the black screen and cursor This happens on both of the accounts on the computer When I run it in safe mode everything works perfectly fine although blacK Screen Of Death (KSOD) the internet doesn't work anymore I connect to the internet directly through a CAT cable plugged into the computer from the modem and I've never had a problem with it until this problem developed It did work one time but my power went out and turned off the blacK Screen Of Death (KSOD) computer and when I turned it back on the problem persisted I've run complete full scans on both Avast and Malwarebytes' Anti Malware and they've come up with nothing I've also restored the system and nothing has fixed it I would really appreciate any help thank you very much in advance I have a feeling I may end up being a registry error but I have no idea what to do with it so I feel it would be safe to get exact instructions before I mess it up completely

i hope your all backed up as this could end up in a clean install,,,, if you are then it could be quicker and easier to do a clean install anyway,,,,,

HI I have a compaq CQ60 laptop with windows vista basic I got it off a friend and unfortunately, after some googling!, I have discovered it has KSOD. It loads up fine, then I get the black screen and if I ctrl alt delete and start task explorer.exe everything runs fine until you turn it on again. I tried the F8 and start from last thing but that didn't work.
The other thing I've read involves booting with vista media and messing with some files. Problem being I have no disc for windows vista.
Please help!!
Also please note I'm not all that computer savvy so help in simple terms lol

Thanks xx

Hey there, I have a Dell 15r and it is currently running Windows 8.1. This morning it working just fine. I was on YouTube and a video wouldn't load, so I simply restarted my laptop. Thats when the trouble began. I wm now only able to log in, and once that happens, my screen is just black with a movable cursor. I've taken the battery out and that didn't work. I am however still able to CTRL ALT DEL and enter task manager, log out, lock, and switch user. How do I go about remedying this problem. Also, f8 and f11 dont take me to the Launch Last Healthy session or whatever and I'm extremely frustrated.

A:Black screen with movable cursor

Hi Everyone,I hope this will help you fix this specific issue you have on your Dell system. On your Desktop Screen Press "Ctrl + Shift + Escape" to bring up "Task Manager".Go to "File" choose "Run New Task" then "Create New Task" window will pop-up, Type in "msconfig" and put a Check Mark on Administrative Privileges in "Create New Task" window then hit "Okay"."System Configuration" window will pop-up, go to the "Boot" tab. Under Boot Options put a Check Mark on "Safe Boot" hit "Apply" "Okay" and "Restart". Your computer will restart and after you log-in you will notice that you are now in SAFE MODE.On SAFE MODE, go to Control Panel > Programs & Features > View Installed Updates.Look for the "Update for Microsoft Windows" & "Security Update for Microsoft Windows" that has the install date of August 2014 then Uninstall them ONE-BY-ONE. (Make sure to uninstall only the said update file name and addition, every time you uninstall one file it will prompt you to restart the computer. Just choose "Restart Later").After Uninstalling all those Updates from your computer, go back to the "Task Manager", refer to the instructions above but this time remove the Check Mark on Safe Boot, then hit Apply, Okay and Restart Later. Now, go back to "Control Panel", then open "Recovery" and choose Open System Restore. On System Restore window hit Next, choose a Restore Point (choose the date which has the last known good configuration) and hit Next. then FINISH.Heads Up!! The system restore process will take a while and after the System Restore process your computer will restart.... ..  . Log-in and it's back to normal. hope this steps will help you fix the issue.Cheers!!

Also try "System Repair" option in Recovery.

Hey everyone.

My mom has a BIG problem with her compture.

My brother was trying to update the PDF reader from adobe and it got to 98% and froze. He tried to hit the cancel and he rebooted into a black screen with a cursor that moves.

He tried to boot into safe mode, but every option leads back to the black screen with the cursor.

He tried to find a restore point, but he states that there were no restore points created.

The computer is Vista premium I believe and it is an HP desktop...about one year old.

Thanks

Let me know what other information you need..

A:Black screen, movable cursor

If you had an install disk, you could run the DISM commands, you may still be able to do it, if you can get Task Manager to pop open, try CTRL ALT DEL while that black screen is up, if you can get Task Manager open, we can open a command prompt. Most likely you will need an Admin Command Prompt, you can check the box that says "Run this as Administrator" while CMD is in the Run Box- In the Task Manager under "File>Run New Task"

DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8

Try to get into Safe Mode, Admin account. You'll have to run the DISM from there.

I've seen this Black Screen of Deth on systems where they used a KMS activator for Windows 8, the fix was to run an In Place Install and buy a new Key (and of course remove the KMS activator). I've had 2 systems like that, but no Valid systems. I know on the cracked systems, the crack caused it. On a valid licenced system I don't know the cause.

If you can get into Safe Mode or a Command Prompt from task Manager, try SLMGR.vbs /dlv and see if your system is still activated, if not, you can try the /a switch and reactivate it.

Hi
I have a computer that operates on windows vista.
I turn it on and it takes about 30 seconds for the monitor to come out of sleep, another 30 seconds for the mouse to appear and then that's it. Nothing else.
If i press ctrl-alt-del the blue circle (the timer?) comes up, flashes on and off then goes off again. Same with esc and f8.
I can move the cursor about but that's all I can do.
I've put my windows vista home premium disk in to see if I can just re install or repair but i get nothing. The blue circle appears for a moment, flashes then stops.
I've tried the disk in both drives but nothing happens with either. Any ideas?
It hasn't been working for a long time and I miss my beautiful pc with all my photos on it.

A:Yoga 2 13 Laptop black screen with movable cursor

Hi Skordy18 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As same issue when even on safe mode most likely indicate corrupted start up files.

You can use a recovery disc ( if you manage to create one before it happened ) or any similar versions of Windows to lauch repair . If all options of advance repair have been exhausted and the repair would not work , consider backing up your files (either removing the harddrive and placed on an external harddrive enclosure to be backed up on another pc or loading a rescue media to boot from).

One key recovery would always be the last option as it would delete everything and reimage the machine back considering if this is a software issue with Windows.
Running hardware diagnostics can also help.

Update us how things go.

Hello all I am in dire need of assistance and any help is most welcome I am running a Sony Vaio with Intel Core Duo GHz processor and Windows XP SP Media Center The computer boots with the Windows splash loading screen as normal afterwards when it would normally show the desktop I am left with a black screen with the cursor in the middle not blinking I have control of the cursor but can t do anything else Ctrl Alt Del does nothing black won't Windows movable screen start; XP cursor w/ and pressing Shift times does nothing I have attempted the normal system restore booting in Safe Mode Safe Mode with networking and Safe Mode with Command prompt All of these result in the same black screen with cursor control I am not aware of any viruses that might be on the machine I regularly run SuperAntispyware Malwarebytes and virus scans with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition None of them detected anything earlier in the day prior to the problem However Firefox had frozen up an unusual number of times yesterday When it froze I noticed that there was always an advertisement on the site that didn t load properly so I attributed it to that Also the night before I received a Cicerouiwndframe not responding error on shutdown but that is not particularly unusual as I have seen it before though not recently Windows XP won't start; black screen w/ movable cursor Further I noticed yesterday that my computer was having trouble recognizing my printer in one of the USB ports but when I switched to one of the other ports it worked fine In trying to resolve this issue I have disconnected all auxiliary hardware mouse wireless adapter printer but this produced little effect Once I get to the black screen with cursor the only way for me to turn the computer off is to disconnect the power cord the back of the computer and remove the laptop battery Pressing the power button does nothing I was working in Excel last night with a couple of Firefox windows open when the computer suddenly froze up Today I m left with the black screen and cursor There are some important files that I need to retrieve from the hard drive so at the very least some help in accomplishing that would be most appreciated I don t have an original Windows XP Media Center Edition disc since the computer never came with one Apparently Sony includes a recovery kit as a special partition on the hard drive but it s not clear what this recovery will do or if it would allow me to use the Windows XP Media Center repair function that would be found on an original Microsoft disc nbsp

A:Windows XP won't start; black screen w/ movable cursor

The only time I ever used that recovery option on a Vaio, it performed a destructive return to factory settings with no further warning so I recommend leaving that one alone for the time being. Tap F8 to bring the Safe Mode menu up and try the option for VGA settings, which might just let your graphics card show with reduced functions. If you can get in that way, try updating the drivers for the graphics in Device Manager.

As for getting the files out, you could Google for Hirens BootCD and download that, burn it to a disk and use MiniXP to gain access to your files and move them to memory sticks of an external hard drive. Using MiniXP would also tell you if the graphics are working but that your own system lacks some files or settings somewhere.

Laptop Acer Aspire with Vista Home Premium Before it all happened - Removed MB memory sticks and inserted a GB memory stick Did a restart It worked perfectly The specs showed that my laptop now has GB of RAM - Decided to clean up the hard drive a bit by uninstalling some programs applications that I no longer used media players toolbars etc I was using quot Total Uninstall quot to do this During the process I deleted some registry keys associated with a media player First sign of trouble - None of my shortcuts were working I went to start menu to open my disk defrag and disk cleaner as a finishing touch to cleaning my hard drive space but received errors stating that the shortcuts did not link to the programs Then I found out none of my shortcuts whether they were in the start menu start toolbar or on my desktop linked properly Decided to do a restart Problem - Restarted It gets pass the BIOS screen information and the windows loading screen However before it reaches the Welcome screen with the accounts files? Black save cursor, screen, movable the screen is just black I see the white cursor in the middle and I am able to move it Nothing else appears - I cannot open the task manager What I have tried so far - Pressed F and selected 'Repair Your Computer' Did the quot Startup Repair quot quot Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool quot Both detected no problems - Pressed F and tried quot Safe Mode quot quot Enable low-resolution video quot quot Last known good configuration quot None of Black screen, movable cursor, save files? these worked and led me to the same black screen with white cursor At this point what other options are available to me I don't believe I ever made Black screen, movable cursor, save files? a recovery disk I don't mind wiping the hard drive clean and reinstalling another OS However I would like to find some way to at least retrieve some pictures stored in the hard drive

A:Black screen, movable cursor, save files?

There are 4 basic causes of black screen events in Windows:
- dead/dying hard drive (doesn't usually have a cursor)
- bad video drivers.
- registry errors
- driver issues (beyond the video drivers)

Since you're not able to get into Safe Mode, it's probably either one of the boot/system start services or the registry entries associated with that (and I'd tend to rule out the video drivers since they'd be isolated out by the Safe Mode boot).

The most likely fix here is to use System Restore (from the Startup Repair menu) to restore your system to a date just prior to your "cleanup".

Beyond that, it's gonna be difficult to fix otherwise, as you'll have to replace registry keys and drivers while outside of Windows.

I haven't used Total Uninstall in a long time, but doesn't it have a save/restore function? Maybe that will contain necessary restore points if the System Restore doesn't work.

You can retrieve your files by slaving the hard drive to another system using a tool like this ($32 US): http://www.cooldrives.com/saandidehadr1.html
I've got one for my personal use, and we have them at work also.

A:Vista black screen of death/moving cursor

Hi aftermathsample, welcome to the board.

Was there anything wrong before the updating? Were you updating the BIOS or chipset drivers? What exact drivers are you updating? Can you boot into safe mode? if you can, go ahead and backup your data before doing anything. Have you been mass around the inside of the case before this happened? May be you have to reinstall after all.

It is helpful for diagnostic if you post your spec of your computer.

Hello I've been running Windows for a year now with no problems but a few days ago my laptop froze and the only way to turn it off with cursor extremely slowly/Black running movable Windows 7 screen was to hold down the power button When I turned it back on it began to run extremely slowly The Windows logo appears as normal but hangs around for a long time before it cuts to a black screen with nothing but the cursor Then if I wait about half an hour Windows 7 running extremely slowly/Black screen with movable cursor the login screen appears but again it takes a long time for the computer to process me typing in my password and pressing enter The screen then goes black for a second time again with the movable cursor for another half hour or so before arriving at my desktop Everything seems to be there Microsoft Office etc but it takes minutes for the laptop to process anything I do or open anything I click on The only notable difference to the desktop is the outdated looking Start button I understand this may be a hardware Windows 7 running extremely slowly/Black screen with movable cursor problem but the one thing that makes me think it is something to do with Windows is when it gets to the desktop a message appears in the bottom-right corner saying 'failed to connect to a Windows service' I have started it in safe mode and Windows 7 running extremely slowly/Black screen with movable cursor that made no difference I've had a look on the internet for solutions but can't find anything that is exactly the same problem as mine And as you can probably tell I am not very computer savvy and don't know what to do next If anybody knows what the problem might be then any help would be appreciated If you need any other details then just ask Thanks in advance JBwell

Hi,

I have a 4 year old Windows 7 laptop which has suddenly started playing up. Last night, I received a runtime error, which when I clicked OK shut down Explorer and removed the start bar from my screen. I was unable to get it back or to make my laptop restart via ctrl+alt+delete. When I forced a restart by removing the battery, I ended up with a black screen with a movable mouse cursor. The same happened when I tried to boot into safe mode, but with the standard 'Safe Mode' text in each screen corner, and Microsoft ® Windows ® (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) at the top edge of the screen.

Can anyone provide any help to revive my ailing laptop?

Thanks,

Steve

A:Laptop won't boot properly, persistent black screen with movable mouse cursor

An update on the situation as it's been a day.

I can't bring up standard desktop in safe mode, or by holding F8 and selecting the low resolution option. Weirdly, I can activate sticky keys, and can see the standard windows sticky keys dialogue box which pops up when you hit shift 5 times in a row.

There are plenty of 'try this' suggestions when I google the issue, but I'm holding off on trying anything at the moment, as I'm hoping the experts here will be awesome.

Cheers!

I had a black screen of death in win 7. That is where windows gets to the point I think where it tries to load the shell. I found a fix on the internet and when I rebooted it got to the same point so I left it alone and it finally came up a hour later, but everything was at a snails pace to open and somethings did not open. I ran the cmd line "sfc /scannow" and it said it fixed some issues, but nothing is better?
I also tried deleting the video card in safe mode and adding new video drivers.
Anyone know how to fix this without fresh install?
Thanks in advance!

If you have access to another Windows 7 computer, you can create a System Repair Disk and from that do a "Startup Repair" It may take up to three times before the repair is successful. Can  you retrieve the data from the hard drive using splashtop?

A:Black Screen of Death with Mouse Cursor

Zac;   You should be good if you got the task manager open.  You should see some tabs at the top of the page.  If not, look in the bottom left corner of task manager.  Click on more info,  and then click on the startup tab.  look at the programs that started.  you should be able to get into one that will help you restore to your last backup.  I found that ccleaner was working and allowed me to restore my system to an earlier date when my computer was running well.  You will likely have to reload programs that were loaded in after that restore point BUT you will not loose any personal data.

Hi Forum This is my first technical issue thread so I pray I recieve worthwhile help I own an Asus Vista HP laptop manufactured in ' and bought it second-hand in NOV ' I made the big mistake of taking this lp without any discs whatsoever and thought I could just buy some later on The problem started just after I had DL Spybot Search and Destroy followed by a trial Norton Anti-Virus After shutdown I experienced the black screen blinking cursor of death I am also not able to access anything but BIOS Black of Screen/ :( Blinking Death Cursor Syndrome F and Escape F F F does not seem to work after many tries I purchased a Recovery Disc Startup CD from an Ebay Vendor however the CD drive also fails to read the disk did setup DVD drive as boot priority The good news is this particular Asus lp is equipped with a secondary Linux based OS Black Screen/ Blinking Cursor of Death Syndrome :( for lightweight web browsing and media access called Express Gate I can view the hard drive and both play music Black Screen/ Blinking Cursor of Death Syndrome :( and view photos through Express Gate so I'm sure my problem isn't a hard-drive failure EG can also read contents of inserted CD If there is any other way to get into my system restore prompt or at least get the drive to recognize a disc I would appreciate the help and advice Thanks

A:Win7 Black screen of death with cursor on all boot modes

Please post exact sfc command you did. (I think it was correct btw). It took many minutes to complete? did it report "no integrity errors found" ?
It doesn't create a logfile because you ran it in recovery environment. To create a logfile:

Code:
set WINDOWS_TRACING_LOGFILE=C:\CBS.log
after that run the SFC command. When it has finished you have a file C:\CBS.LOG

Hi First sorry if this problem already has been adressed elsewhere I have googled for roughly hours and now im spent I have encountered a problem regarding the screen format of (with boot / Black after won't death cursor) Windows boot process of my computer ASUS N SV Laptop with Windows Premium bit installed Yesterday i formated a harddrive My computer has harddrives labelled C and D Windows is installed on the C drive and i formated the D drive using the designed windows tool Today Windows won't boot after format / Black screen of death (with cursor) my laptop has been unable to boot At first the computer appears to be booting however after the quot Windows is starting quot along with the Windows logo has been present for a while a screen similar to this one appears http cdn howtogeek Windows won't boot after format / Black screen of death (with cursor) com wp-content png Trying to start normally loops back around to the same screen trying to repair the computer results in the computer ending up with a black screen with the mouse cursor present and able to move around However the following problems are present - I cannot open task manager or anything else for that matter at the mouse cursor screen thus i can't use the quot restart explorer exe solution quot or anything software related for that matter - When trying to enter Safe Mode i end up with Windows won't boot after format / Black screen of death (with cursor) the same screen and limited options This goes for all variations of safe mode along with the quot Last good configuration quot and quot low resolution video quot options as well - When trying to boot from a Recovery disc created from another Win pc i end up in the same situation - I have tried to download a win ISO file as described elsewhere and boot from that with the same luck - I have tried to disable the harddrive entirely in the BIOS - no luck either - Removing all USB related plugins does nothing So to sum up - Normal startup Restart loop - Repair startup Black screen of death with mouse cursor present moveable but cant do anything - Safe mode variations same - Recovery disc same - Windows installation disc same - I can't seem to open a command promt As everything on the PC is backed up i do not have any problems in doing complete wipe of everything on the PC Factory reset thus if any solution exists where i can simply reinstall windows bear in mind i can't enter any sort of software or command prompt

A:Windows won't boot after format / Black screen of death (with cursor)

It sounds like you are not setting the machine to boot from disc first

Sorry i dont know your computer experience but are you sure you have entered bios and double checked the boot order ?
DVD first them HDD second
Also are you sure you have created your media correctly ie bootable
Be aware a recovery disc created on a 32 bit machine will only work if your machine is 32 bit and same for 64 bit
You could also try putting your downloaded iso onto a usb flash drive and boot from that if you are having optical drive issues

Tutorial here for reinstalling and the first part gives instructions for download and burn to usb if it helps

Windows appears to load normally until reaching the logon screen at which point 2 quick cmd windows flash on the screen and i'm left with a cursor and a plain blue screen.

No access to task manager through ctrl+alt+del.

I was thinking it's a video card problem until i plugged in an external monitor and saw a windows error box pop up saying that the program running requires that you not be on battery power.

Pulled the drive and scanned with avast and malwarebytes which found nothing.

Inserted Vista DVD but the repair function is only able to find the HP Restore partition and is unable to locate any backups.

The system runs "mini XP" from Hirens Boot without a problem, but no diagnostics that i ran have been able to find any issues...

Ideas?

Hey I had some problem yesterday when I was about to turn off my PC for the day and with adapter Ethernet Death cursor mouse - Screen Black of related I got a regular old blue screen and a memory dump which Black Screen of Death with mouse cursor - Ethernet adapter related was completed I restarted the PC just to see nothing was wrong and it loaded Black Screen of Death with mouse cursor - Ethernet adapter related just fine Turned it off without further issues Today when I started it up it took forever to get past the Welcome screen Windows very fast SSD and when it did there was just a black screen with a mouse cursor I could Black Screen of Death with mouse cursor - Ethernet adapter related move Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing I rebooted a couple of times same story Rebooted into safe mode with networking and it did the exact same thing black screen mouse cursor nothing else Rebooted into safe mode without network and it loaded up fine Did some googling on my phone and started with the regular reverting to an earlier configuration and uninstalled the most recent updates and programs nothing new was installed yesterday though Also checked regedit for the value to shell and something else and disabled a number of startup objects in msconfig No change Also ran the starup repair tool in F repair thingie and did a chkdsk on boot drive No change I then figured the network part of safe mode might be an indicator and tried to delete the Ethernet adapter in devices and rebooted into a regular startup And it worked I got in without any network obviously and Windows immediately installed a driver for my Ethernet adapter I rebooted again and the black screen was back So I went back and deleted the adapter again in safe mode and deleted the software driver along with it and tried to install another driver directly in safe mode I know for a fact of three different drivers that work for my network card Killer e The regular Killer e obv a windows default something and a Qualcomm Atheros AR driver same chip I tried all three since I had them on my local hard drive and have used all in the past successfully Black screen with all I got desperate so I went out and quickly bought a cheap Gigabit Ethernet PCI-E card and tried that and disabled the Killer e in BIOS and it booted fine installed right away and lets me reboot without any further issues Is it likely that somehow the onboard Killer e card actually has broken Seems to be a hardware issue with it now that all the different software drivers made no difference And everything works fine with it disabled There was quite a storm in my area yesterday but I live in an apartment building with Gigabit fiber cabling and there is a modem router in between my PC and wall socket Ethernet port which works fine still Also a NAS attached to the same modem still working fine Seems unlikely a power spike or such would make it to my PC that way with everything else working fine If it is a hardware failure I still have the guarantee on my motherboard but I'm not sure I want to send it in for this when a cheap PCI-E card works and should work just as fine in the long run right No mobo no PC for me and this kinda stuff always takes a week or two minimum

Without prompting, black screen on boot-up appeared today, windows 7 system fix does not fix problem.

Apparently I had no restore points saved, or if I did, they are now gone.  I frankly don't remember if I had any.

I came across a topic here handled by Marius, which showed how to run FRST64 (I run windows 7 64 bit professional).

When I ran it, no fixlist was generated.  the text file for the run results showed everything whitelisted so far as I could tell, with no system restore points.

Any suggestions?  Will post text file from frst64, if thought helpful.

hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR21M laptop with me that either gets stuck on an endless cycle on the vista loading screen, or if trying in safe mode it just reboots. If i tell it not to reboot it just stays at the vista loading screen. when selecting fix your computer option it gets the dreaded black screen with white cursor on (cursor does move). Odd thing is when booting off a vista disc it loads with the same issue as the repair partition mode, black screen and cursor.

any ideas

edit #1: (just a note i am currently seeing if will boot off xp cd and will try chkdsk /r)

edit #2: having asearch for sata driver to load into xp setup as the bios is rubbish and has next to no options!! if anyone has a quick link pop it in, cheers

Recently my brother in law tried to open up w/ Vista Black Screen Cursor a pdf which turned into a virus After that happened he was notified he was missing some drivers I told him to system restore and after doing that it just started up with the black screen This now happens on every boot including safe mode I cannot access anything via CTRL ALT Delete or the shift buttons The only thing I hear after hitting Shift times is a little sound like a blip so it may be coming up I just can't see it sticky keys Vista Black Screen w/ Cursor I have the Vista CDs and have tried every diagnostic option on there the startup diagnostic tells me there are no problems I have tried Vista Black Screen w/ Cursor to reinstall the video drivers from command line but I just get an Vista Black Screen w/ Cursor error I have also tried the Drivers and Utilities CD to run some kind of test and fix All the tests pass fine I think there is a problem with the video driver but I am not sure When I boot in safe mode it stops at crcdisk sys I don't know if this is the normal end point for safe mode but that's the last sys file loaded before the black screen I do not have a way to run an install without deleting everything and would prefer not to do that I cannot get to the device manager or control panel from where I am I have tried using devcon exe but its not that easy to use So just to recap no safe mode no regular startup no last good config no start diagnostic video driver won't install via cmd others do Any ideas I am almost out of them I am going to try and install SP for the heck of it but I doubt that would affect the boot up

Let see if this will get you to a point where we can use some of the regular repairs.
Try this

Take out the battery, (eliminate this step if desktop)
Remove main supply,
Hold power button down for 30 secs,
Put only power supply in, do not put battery in
Turn laptop on
Put the battery in.

I've been handed a Vista machine that will boot windows, but it only gets to a black screen where the cursor has loaded.

I am able to move the cursor around the black screen.

Nothing else happens. CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing. Nothing will load.

I cannot get into safe mode, it gets to the same point.

Loading last known good settings does nothing either.

I can load the hard drive as a slave on another computer.

I can't seem to do much with it.

Any ideas?

I am helping a friend with their Vista machine (I am XP myself) their Laptop boots into a black screen with the mouse only, same result with any mode (safe mode, last good configuration etc.)

The Ctrl/Alt/Del does not work while sitting at the black screen with only a mouse (which is not frozen)

I tried the F8 at boot up to chose the "Repair your computer" option but can not log in as Administrator it says account has been disabled.. so I log into the account my friend has on there (which I assume should have admin privileges?!?) I try to run Msconfig.exe but it says something about not having the correct privileges blah blah....

I was hoping to run msconfig.exe to fix the start up issue... but can not without the correct privileges set..

Any idea???

First and foremost, I am just frustrated because Dell computers are a piece of crap. Secondly, I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 which up until an hour or two ago was working. I now have a black screen of death staring at me with a white cursor that moves but nothing else happens. I don't even see a login screen. If anyone can help, that would be great. I had downloaded quicken 2009 from filestube and uninstalled it in its entirety. I also uninstalled Total Uninstall 2009. I had all sorts of weird errors and other pop-ups as well. If you guys can help, I would totally appreciate it.EDIT: Merged post from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic316319.html, same topic ~ Hamluis.

Hi Family_Man,

My name is Tapan. I am from Dell Social Media Team.

I read your message and I appreciate your effort. You can try releasing the flea power which might be causing this issue by following the below mentioned steps.
1. Shut down the system and unplug the power cord and remove the battery as well.
2. Press and hold the power button on the laptop for about 10 seconds.
3. Release the power button.
4. Please put the battery back in and plug in the ac adapter and power on the system.

You can also change the boot sequence in BIOS and make CD DVD ROM as first boot device.

The OS reinstallation not initiating or finishing might very well be caused by a damaged CD or DVD, you can try another Windows Vista Home premium CD and use the product key on the bar coded label of your system.
Let me know of the findings. Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks & Regards

A:Vista startup..cursor on black screen...nothing else?

Is service pack 1 installed?

some causes.

1. Recently installed software/drivers

2. Video card or video driver problems

3. Disconnect all USB devices during the boot process, see if this solves it

4. If you never installed SP1 in Vista see this article, it only applies to non SP1 Vista installations

I have an HP dv9500t Intel T7300 C2D w/ 2 GB memory and Vista Premium. This has just started in the last couple of days after installing Trend Micro Internet Security. After boot up and entering my password on the login screen, the login begins with the colored Vista screen and the spinning circle (hour glass) and then will fade to black with nothing but the cursor visible. It will stay this way from anywhere between 1-3 minutes and finally will finish the login and the main screen will come up. It's very frustrating.

I have even uninstalled Trend Micro and it is still doing the same thing. Any known fixes for this problem? Are there any Vista updates for this problem. If anyone has had this problem and has a solution, it would be greatly appreicated. This laptop is only a month old!!!

A drained battery led my laptop to shut down unexpectedly yesterday. Since then attempts to boot the computer result in a black screen, white cursor.

The problem replicates when I - [] attempt to boot the computer normally [] attempt to boot in safe mode (w/& w/o cmd prompt) [] attempt to boot to the last good configuration. During the course of this issue, I received a prompt to system restore (which replicated the issue) and I believe that there was a separate system recovery prompt which indicated that I would need to boot from a disk (which I do not have).

I was able to do a bit of research on another computer that I have access to, and from what I discovered, it appears that this issue happens to occur for a number of reasons. If any of you have helpful tips for an individual in my position, I would be highly appreciative.

Hola... Well, A Vista issue..

A perfectly working Vista machine, on startup after login we go to a black screen with a cursor in normal or safe mode, thought it might be busy, but ran all night and never completely booted up, if ctl-alt-del, you can log off normal, and shut down or restart.

Unfortunately I was a MS dummie and never made a sys restore point, but beyond that this should not happen, and I am probally not the only one.

Any others with this issue and any resolve other than re-installing windows.

Thank you in advance.

I just reformatted my hard drive and I am trying to run vista but I go through all the steps and it says copying files, expanding, installing features and then it says it has to reboot to contunue but when it reboots it just hangs on a black screen with a cursor. I am not sure what is going on. When vista goes through the setup and reboots does it reboot to the hard drive or does it still need to go back to the USB to continue?

A:Black screen with cursor after installation of vista

It should boot to the HDD. Boot into Setup (Bios) go to the Boot tab and change it to HDD first boot device. Save and Exit.

Hey everyone!

I've had an issue with my computer booting properly. I went from a 1:05 boot time to over a 2:00 boot because Vista go's to a black screen instead of loading my desktop.

I'm not sure where to start fixing this, I've always been good with computers and have tried all the text book fixes and I have no where left to go. I made a video which is uploading now and will be up incase this doesn't make as much sense as I'd hope.

I'm running an
Alienware Area 52
Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00 GHz
3 gigs of ram
ATI Radeon x1600

All my drivers are up to date.

Any help / input / advise is greatly appreciated!

Ive had my Medion computer for about just over two months now and it has been working perfectly fine. Only today, after my computer paused forcing me to restart it, did it begin to malfunction. Everything goes to pot. When i turn the computer on everything seems to work fine until you get the the log in screen. But thats the problem, i cant get to the log in screen. I am presented with a black screen and only a cursor. @.@ . I tried repairing my PC using the recovery disk you get with the PC, i also tried re-installing Vista and i tried starting the PC up in Safe Mode. None of those worked. Ive even been driven to the point where i am considering Factory reseting my PC, but i cant because i cant log in >.< .

Can any one help ?

Much appreciated -

A:Windows Vista - The Black Screen Of Death

When your computer boots, try to take into the recovery mode [Via F8 key].

there you can try startup repair which Vista tries to repair any issues by itself.

If that doesn't work... reboot and go back into the same menu and open up CMD {command prompt} and type sfc /scanow and let it look inside the main system files and try to figure out what's wrong.

Other than that....I have no other suggestions.

Good luck with it.

Hey guys. So this morning, I turned on my computer to find I had an error. There was an error box and I said ok. I forgot what it said (stupid of me). When I clicked ok, the entire desktop and icons disasppeared. Only the background was there. So I decided to push the power button and restart. When it went past the booting screen there was a black screen. They keyboard was still working. The mouse cursor wasn't there, however. Ctr+alt+delete resets the computer and I'm brought back to the booting screen. I googled many solutions but I'm unable to replicate their success. I am unable to run in safe mode, for my stick keys are disabled. I forgot where the installation disc was in the house. I got back after searching for the disc and I saw that the winload.exe is corrupt or missing. Whatever that is. Please help. It would be appreciated.

It sounds to me like the shell might not be loading. Check the registry entry at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

and make sure that the Shell entry is set to explorer.exe
I don't really know if this is your problem exactly, but it's worth a try.

Also, can you get into safe mode? If not, updates are probably the least of your problems.

So when I start my laptop, after the loading windows screen, it directly goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor/underscore in the top left corner.
I've tried the ctrl-alt-delete. That does nothing.
I've tried the shift 5 times. Nothing
I can't acess safe mode by doing F8. The only screen I can acess is when I press ESC, and that takes me to 1. System Info 2. System Diagnostics 3. Boot Device Options 4. BIOS Setup and 5. System Recovery
System Recovery takes me back to the black screen with the blinking cursor. It sucks.
I've look EVERYWHERE and nothing has worked so far! Help please!

I'm using Vista Home Premium. Last night I just got rid of a virus (Antivirus 2009) and installed a new antivirus program (avast). I restarted a couple times, then went into safe mode, then shut off the computer. This morning I couldn't get it to boot, not even in safe mode. Everytime, it would make it past the loading bars, and then the screen would turn black, and there would just be the cursor there, with the little loading circle flashing.

Can someone tell me what is wrong? Or at least, can someone tell me how to get around this and boot up my computer at least once so that I can try system restore?

I can not get into safe mode, I tried Vista recovery tools (System restore, Startup repair (shows no problems).

I am able to access my hard drive and back up small amounts of data through my backup software which is on disk.

Any help out there?

A:Vista not booting? Black screen/blinking cursor

Dare I ask If you have used a Registry Cleaner?/Messed with your BIOS at all?

Unplug ALL usb devices, and restart. If this doesnt work, boot into, and try System Restore from the Advanced recovery utility on the Vista DVD. If this fails try a repair/upgrade re-install from the Vista disk.

Failing all the above steps may indicate Hardware failure.

Here is a method to back up your files, I suggest doing this first, then move on to a possible repair.

Hi, I have an Acer laptop - Aspire 5315-2470 and when my son turned it on it goes to the Acer screen and then goes to black screen with cursor in the left hand corner.

I have tried to reboot in safemode but all I get is beeping noises. I also read in the manual on how to restore the computer back to day one we bought it, by holding ALT and F10 upon turning on . All I get is the same beeping noises.

This computer is only 1 year old , so if someone can give me any advice on how to fix this I would be very happy.

Thanks In Advance...

Look at your BIOS settings. The Acer screen may tell you how to access the BIOS (boot) settings with a function key - probably F2. Press that F2 or whatever it tells you when the Acer screen comes up. When the BIOS screen displays, make sure the "boot from" setting is your hard disk. If not, change it.

I ve been handed a Vista Home Premium laptop to mend and whilst I ve got it going I m posting this to share my discoveries for what seems to be a not uncommon problem I must say that having read lots of other posts on this subject my solution solved & Vista black cursor - login gives screen may not be the one relevant to anyone else I m not explaining all the details as I would Vista login gives black screen & cursor - solved do normally because if you need them explaining then perhaps this post is not for you The problem was that on boot up all looks well but having logged on the user is presented with a black screen and a cursor which can be moved There is also disk activity but it never gets any further Ctrl Alt Del won t even bring up its menu Booting into safe mode and logging in gives the safe mode screen safe more in the corners and a cursor but nothing else - no task bar etc This time Ctrl Alt Del will bring up a menu but selecting Task Manager apparently does nothing Having used Linux tools to make sure all was backed up I ran a chkdsk on the drive removed it and ran it on another computer but nothing showed up I then booted into safe mode with command prompt which worked - at least in part I was given a command prompt window so was able to try and run things rstrui and explorer appeared to do nothing though trying rstrui again gave the message that it was already running I was able to access a memory stick and also able to run Process Explorer which showed that rstrui and explorer were indeed running so I killed them I noticed that one instance of svchost exe was using CPU so I killed it and tried starting explorer from the command prompt and I got up the safe mode help screen and the task bar I was also able to run rstrui again but found there were no restore points I think the owner might have killed any that were there by her own initial attempts - it s certainly set to make them Occasionally the svchost exe started again but I m not sure exactly what was happening there While svchost was running I was able to get into event viewer and could get at most windows logs but it never completed finding system events so maybe there s a corruption there I set the Windows Event Log service to disabled and rebooted and the machine booted up OK and logged in I then changed svchost service to manual and started the service without any apparent problems although the event viewer just says quot Expand in progress quot and then shows Event Viewer local with a no entry sign Rebooting with the service set to manual gave the same original problem so back to safe mode command prompt to kill the svchost item Having killed the svchost process I restarted the windows event log service and was able to view the system log this time I took the opportunity to clear all windows logs and then try rebooting again and this time it started OK I had noticed that the system event log had entries in it and the application log wasn t too far behind It all seems to be working again now and my feeling is that it probably had something to do with the log event files maybe corrupt or too big nbsp

Hi,
I think your display driver or video card need to be checked.

A:Vista stuck on black screen with blinking cursor

Hello nicks145,
Can you boot into safe mode ?.
If you can, open a command prompt and type sfc/scannow press enter and let it scan, you may have to do this more than once if errors are found, until the system is clean.
Try this and post your results, good luck.

My sons computer will not boot Vista 32-bit. I get the black screen and blinking cursor. It will not start in safe mode. It appears to show up in the BIOS. I inserted a recovery disk, but when I click on repair, no OS shows in the box. I clicked install (and stopped there) used the SHFT F10 option and pulled up the Command Promt. From there did the earliest system restore I could find. Restore was successful, rebooted....and still the black screen. I've tried so many things, that I don't even know where to begin. Please help! Thank you. I know a little about computers, but I am not a guru, so please try to ABC as much as possible.

A:Vista not booting? Black screen/blinking cursor

Hi jipcie,

Let us try few steps to isolate the issue:
1. Disconnect any external devices connected to the computer.
2. Go to system set-up and ensure that Hard Drive is selected as the first boot device and followed by CD/DVD drive.
3. Save changes and exit.
4. If issue persists, run the built-in diagnostics provided by the manufacturer on the computer to check if the hardware is working fine.

Based on the system model F2 or DEL keys should let you enter the system BIOS. Kindly let me know the system model to assist you better

Please post the results.

Man this is the second time I ve come across this issue Both times they were top of the line Dell Studio and XPS laptops In the end I resolved the issue by installing Windows but for my own sanity I need to know why Vista won t install I tried installing times and it keeps bringing me to this damn white cursor I tried my trusty Dell OEM disk and even burned a fresh copy of Home Premium at x speed but to no avail The logic just doesn t add up The laptop boots fine from a BartPE disk and as I said with Windows I personally would never install Vista on any of my machines but when it s for a customer they re either going to have to spring for a license in days or not cough update cough if you know what I mean I m one of those people who has to know and THIS is what drives me nuts

A:Seriously, what the deal with the Black screen and the white cursor on Vista?

What came installed on these machines in the first place?

have you verified Driver Support for all the hardware in the computer?
