I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

New laptop May 2016, with Win 10 x 64  installed.  Ran all upgrades.  Since purchase, every time I restart, shut down etc, it 'resets' all of the personalized settings, especially annoying is the mouse/touch pad.  I have to open settings every single time and select the disable touch pad, and also select the have touchpad icon on task bar.  While I'm in this session, all is fine, but a soon as I shut down/restart it goes back to squre one, starting point ever time.  It's very annoying.  Especially that the icon won't stay on the task bar-I have to go to settings, advanced/more settings...etc.  I've updated everything, I've run 'fixes' have tried everything I can think of.  Thanks much!!

So my phone Lumia was hit with the restart bug I was left with no option but to do a factory reset I went through the proper procedures I somehow managed to verify that my phone had created a backup of my apps and settings I removed the SD card just in case Etc etc However after the reset upon attempting to download my backups I was met with several problems The first OneDrive apparently has no backup for me to access I've tried numerous times but there seems to be no backups to be had The second several apps I had had installed are seemingly no longer available on the Windows store So what am I to glean from all this Because of some poorly coded bull leading to an OS or firmware bug bug hard restart and after defaults. Issues to factory reset I've lost a hefty chunk of personal data and cherished applications despite using MS's 'backup' feature if this sounds hostile it's likely because it is I'm very agitated by this I still have the SD card unformatted However there seems to be no meaningful way for me to recover what Issues after restart bug and hard reset to factory defaults. is on it At least not in any way that my phone will recognize Any advice anyone can give besides dropping this piece of junk and getting an Android

The only way to reset the "memory" on the battery is to completely drain it.
Unfortunately, draining it once a week has probably worn it out.
Should only drain it when it shows signs of not fully charging.

A strange problem indeed.

Triple check your wiring is correct using your motherboard manual. Be sure the motherboard is mounted correctly on the standoffs and no grounds are occurring.

Faulty buttons on the case itself?

Reset bios to optimal defaults, clear cmos.

After that I would return the mobo.

Sorry I cant be more specific, Hope this helps.

When i try factory resetting it says 'preparing' shortly after it says 'there was a problem while resetting your PC' and under it says 'No changes were made' and under that it says 'check problem for solution' and i click it and it exits out itself and nothing happens. i need to restore my laptop to factory settings because it has gone so slow and wont let me go out applications but when it does it freezes and is very slow message edited by HarrisZaman

A:i try to factory reset/restore my laptop but it wont let me

Do you really need to use Factory Restore, which loses all your own files? Maybe it would be best to tackle the slowness. As often as not (but not always) this is due to malware. I would suggest running these three small freebies which are safe and well used on Malware forums. They often unearth what your anti-virus can miss:AdwCleaner: Download button near top - not anything else on the page).Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Cleaning" button.Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) Download button near top - not anything else on the page).Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run JRT. It might appear to have stopped at times or flash the screen but sit tight until it has finished.MalwareBytes: Download button top right - not anything else on the page)Install and Run the program but before doing its Scan go to "Settings > Detection and Protection" and put a checkmark in "Scan for rootkits". Quarantine anything it finds. Please copy/paste the logs on here. Even if the symptoms go away further checks might be necessary to ensure your computer is properly clean. Also let us know if there is any improvement afterwards.EDIT:If you can't run them Save the download files on another computer then transfer them over to the one giving trouble using a flash drive.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I used the media profile to download Windows 10 to a USB and everything worked fine but now there's another problem. My laptop was working after reinstalling Windows, but then I shut my laptop over and went away for ten minutes or so and I've came back to a black screen with no display at all. The white LED is on so my laptop is on. It has around 40% charge in it as of typing this. The screen is unresponsive. Please help again but thank you for helping me fix the first issue.

A:Re: I hard reset my laptop, error occurred and now my laptop...

Hi @kirsty_mcq17, Thanks for the update on your situation. I understand that you are now having issues with the display being blank and the system unresponsive. Have you tried doing a hard reset since the system stopped responding? If the system will not boot into Windows normally, let me know if you get any errors. You can also try using Safe mode. Once you are able to log back in, please make sure you download the latest HP drivers and Windows Updates. From what you described, it sounds like the system may have gone into sleep or hibernate mode. This document will take you through troubleshooting possible issues with those features. If you feel this post has answered your question, take a moment to click Accept as Solution. Thanks!

My laptop was running slow so I thought I would do a hard reset since I didn't have any important files on it. So I reset it and I got a blue screen error, then a listing screen with a popup box saying there was an error or my computer restarted and I should press OK to install. I found a solution online to get past the popup box, I don't remember what it was though, but now my laptop is stuck in a state of constant reboot. It goes like this:Blue HP Logo with loading circle,Black screen,Blue HP Logo,Installing and configuring Windows install screen that doesn't move past 64%,And then black screen. This process constantly repeats. Please help.

Hello,Basically my laptop starts, shows the lenovo screen, screen goed away and nothing else happens.Story: My laptop was being sluggish and I figured resetting it would solve allot of problems. So I did, it went to reset nothing unusual, but then, it said the reset had failed, and it gave me a couple of options, which I dont all recall, but i pressed continue. After that, blank screen nothingness.I can barely tell as my screen is semi broken, from when I was cleaning it, I guess some liquid got inside and ruined the screen somehow, but still did semi work. Conclusion: wont go past the lenovo screen when starting up because of reset that failed. I hope someone can help.Greetings, Me

A custom built laptop recently fell into my hands, and everything was working fine according to the previous owner. I wiped the system, installed a fresh copy of XP, and on the initial boot was able to access the device manager to find almost everything ( video card, ethernet controller, wireless adapter, etc) needed drivers. When trying to install the drivers for the first device, the laptop freezes, with a sort of blotchy block display across the screen. I turned the laptop off, tried to reboot, the cpu fan spun for a few moments, stopped, then nothing happened. The power light was on, but nothing was on the screen, and nothing was audibly running. I tried rebooting again after a few minutes, It booted to XP, and as soon as it loaded, it froze again. Any idea what could be causing this problem?

A:Laptop wont restart after suspending, it needs time to chill

Welcome to TSG mosquitoChris! Too bad your first post is this problem!

This is a hardware problem of some type, not likely to be electical discharge. Could be power supply. Sounds like something is getting hot and failing.

Right click on My Computer and go to manage. Go to the Event Viewer and look around at the Errors and Warnings especially around the times it shuts down. I would start with System log. Another thing that sometimes helps trouble shoot is: My Computer right click for "properties", Advanced (tab), Startup and Recovery button. Go there and turn off "restart automaticly" and leave the logging and alert options on.

I'm guessing the Video Card since you mentioned 'zig zag' lines in your description. The bad thing about laptops (opposed to towers) is you can't easily swap out components to troubleshoot.

I assume its no longer under warranty? Even if you do identify the culprit fixing the component is no easy task on the laptop....

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge which has Windows 7.

Last night I received notification to upgrade Norton 360 and I accepted. I was told to restart my computer at the end. I waited until today to do so. When I clicked 'restart' everything shut down and then suddenly switched to a terrible white screen with striations, no idea how else to describe.

Now when I restart I get the black screen with the Lenovo start up message. And then the screen goes all black and then it goes that gray color that lets you know your computer is on... but it won't go any further than that.

Twice I've received an error message stating an install has killed my windows and to put in my windows disc. I don't HAVE a windows disk as my computer came pre-installed.

Yesterday my laptop suddenly stopped responding. I followed the tutorial and removed the battery and tried booting up the laptop using the charger. It doesn't work. I can see the charger port going from white to orange and then blank in quick succession. Then I tried keeping the battery and the charger plugged in for a long time without turning on the laptop. The charger remains orange for more than an hour before turning white.   I tried running the laptop after couple of hours and it boots up fine. But on the other hand, charger starts to act up again cycling through nothing, orange and white. So when the battery charge falls below 15%, it goes through low battery and then showing a bit of charge then again warning.

Hello, I was hoping maybe somebody could help me with this laptop. The issue I'm having is most of the time when I walk away from it and leave it on, upon returning the screen is just black, the computer is running but there is no response on the keyboard or mouse, which requires a hard shutdown and a restart. It then says it was not shut down properly, I start it up, and it runs fine until the next time I walk away and it does this freeze thing. I also want to note that it does not always do this, sometimes it sleeps like it should, but the problem is increasing in frequency.

A:Laptop wil not turn on anymore. Hard reset is not working

If the power jack LED is not on we can figure it may be the power supply. It might not be putting out power. Just about any electronics shop can test its power output. How old is the unit? Still under warranty?

What do you mean will not "take" it? Is it showing up in the BIOS? If you are trying to install Windows 8 you are going to have to enable secure boot. The ahci/ide is not an adjustment you can make it is locked to native SATA i.e. ahci. What model of hard drive are you trying to install?

I have a Windows 8 tablet Acer Iconia W700(I5 Core) and i am trying to factory reset to the default settings again because of the stupid problems i am having on the tablet.
Here is the problem i am trying to get into the BIOS which is the 1 step on the Acer website but for some bizarre reason when it is completely off i press the Windows button and the power button to get in to the BIOS as it says on the Acer Website but it keeps going to the start menu/desktop now instead of going to the BIOS. :/
I have factory reset/hard reset on my Acer Iconia W700 a couple times and i never had this problem before, i gone in to the BIOS no problem!!!
Can someone help me please?? Thanks!!!

Boot the computer and press F8 in the Advanced Boot menu choose Last Known Good Configuration.
What is the make and model# of the computer? Go to the manufactures support/download drivers site and download the Chipset and the Video driver for the computer.

I,ve taken in a Lenovo Thinkpad T60. After powering it up, Windows XP attempted to start then went to blue screen.

I popped in an XP disc to boot from and pressed Repair. the machine told me that no Hard disks could be found. I then ran a HD diagnostic program in the bios which found errors on the HD

So I replaced it with another Sata HD ran XP set up and again it told me no hard disks could be found?

So far I have:

Have checked HD is fitted correctly

I can see the hard disk in the bios.

When I ran diagnostic program from the bios on the new hard disk it passed OK.

Can anyone offer any further advice.

I was thinking that perhaps the bios could have become corrupted. I believe updates are available.

Or could the new Sata require a driver??

Installing XP on this laptop can be somewhat tricky; follow the advice by Lenovo to install and post if you have any problems. You need to change the BIOS options to "Sata"...

My new laptop XPS M1530 by DELL with Vista 64bit and a 500GB hard drive came with 4 partitions already in use. I shrank OS C: to give me 150GB's of unallocated space and tried to format and rename it F: so that I could install the Windows 7 Beta and the machine tells me I have to many partions already in use to make another. Apparantly you cant have more than four partitions on this machine. The question I have is can I use a partion manager or some other solution to have more than four partions on this laptop?

Did you initialize the hard drive in Disk Mgmt yet? Look now to see if it's there waiting to be initialized as an MBR or GPT disk. If only for data then I'd initialize it GPT to have as many partitions as you want. If it might be used for an OS at some future point, initialize it MBR but you'll be limited to four Primary partitions, or three Primary and unlimiited Logical (data) partitions.

When i try rebooting the computer, It will not detect the hard drive at all......and it just stays at a black screen and doesnt go any further......Im suspecting that maybe his hard drive is pretty mangled or his motherboard is starting to go.

Could someone give me a heads up on this matter.......Thanks for your time guys do great work here !!

Sometimes heat Generated from internal Dust (near CPU and Fan)
If you're really keen, you could dismantle it, and then use compressed air (comes in a can) and blow out all the internal dust)

Ofcourse it could be a dieing HardDrive too
You can run a Drive Diagnostics on it as well

It is part of a greater problem I describe here, that Vista "memorizes" my system volume setting when I shut down the PC.

Is there any way to disable this behavior and make Vista set my system volume to 100 % on each and every reboot, regardless of the status it had been in before shutdown?

Thanks for the help!

A:Reset Volume on Restart

Sure, I thought it was clear.

I want my Vista system volume to be at 100 % (meaning: not at the value which is saved when I shut down the OS) when I start my PC.

Even more detailed:
1. My system or master volume is now at 33 %.
2. I shut down the computer.
3. I start the computer.
4. My system or master volume is still at 33 %, because Vista saves this value on shutdown.

I want the volume to be 100 % at step 4. I do not know how to do that.

I have a pavilion dv9000 notebook running XP and every time I change the pointer speed for the touchpad to its fastest setting it will reset itself to the default setting after I shutdown and reboot. I define the toolbars in my taskbar to point to quicklaunch & My Computer, but whenever I restart/shutdown the definitions vanish and I need to redefine which is really annoying.

I downloaded Windows Manager which was recommended here for saving of positions, sizes , etc of folders. It's a great software but I can't seem to use it to save these toolbar definitions, maybe I can and I just don't know how?

Or is there another way maybe in the registry you can recommend upon?

Thanks in advance!

A:Cursor reset to default & scrolling goes away on restart

I'm just posting on here again because it's been so long and the issue has NOT been solved. I don't know how it works on here, but this might bring it to the top of the 'recent' list instead of buried under forgotten issues. I guess I still want to know about the cursor thing, if that's even possible, but I'm really, real tired of fixing the scroll bar going away every time I restart my computer.
I use the scroll bar on the side of my touch pad a lot. And the fact I have to update my synaptics settings every single time is getting on my nerves. I didn't have to in Windows 8, 8.1, or 7. So is there a way to fix this?
Is anyone else having this issue, even?

Yesterday we had a 3 second power failure and when my computer restarted, the desktop icons were taking foreverrrr to show up (usually my computer takes 30 secs to load up because I only have a few programs installed at the moment). So I forced shutdown using the button and then booted up again.

Now it won't get past the MOBO's post screen and I can't even use my keyboard to get into the startup or the bios. Every time I shut down my computer, when I go to turn it back on the same thing happens and the only way I can get it going again is to reset the jumpers.

I did research prior to asking for help, but it seemed that everyone had different issues. I've never heard of this one before. My only guess is the MOBO battery, but I highly doubt it. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks a lot!

A:Freezes at post screen. Need to reset jumpers EVERY restart

The cmos battery does not stop a post. You will get an error however the system will post.

I would put the system into a very basic state.
1 Open the case and pull the pw connector from ALL drives; hd and optical.
2 Disconnect any usb type device
3 Pull out any add-in cards such as sound, nic, etc. Leave in your video card
4 Remove all ram except one stick.

Now attempt a post. If it fails, shutdown and try a different ram chip.

If it still fails to post, you will need to swap parts with known good ones; ie power supply, motherboard, ram, etc to find the problem.

FWIW I just fixed a family member's system that suffered a power failure/surge. It was just the pw supply that went out [they were lucky]

Windows 7 x64 Professional. I have several issues. Most notable is the fact that I will tell the system to restart (shutdown menu) and it will eventually restart (sometimes hangs at "logging off...") then fails to post after shutting down on the restart. If I manually toggle my reset button, the system starts up fine with no errors. If I had to power off during a hang at shutdown, I get a prompt with startup options saying the system failed to shut down correctly.

Other issues which may be related: Windows update freezes after opening only displaying the loading mouse (think hourglass) and a white screen. I have to force quit from task manager. iTunes also fails to launch, but opens a process (visable in task manager).

I have tried a system settings/files restore, with no progress.

Any help!?

A:fail to post after restart, but fixed with reset button

Welcome to Seven forums LongN3ck.
Offhand this sounds like a bad motherboard. Power off and remove all USB devices, except keyboard, mouse, and try it. Take out all memory modules except one and try it.
Power off and reset CMOS. Pull the power cable out first.
*Method one, remove the coin battery and short the battery terminals for 10 seconds.
*Method two, The mother board may have CMOS reset jumpers, short them for 10 seconds.

If the issue persists I still think its a bad board. I've had much experience with bad ones.

Hello every one I've been having a long term problem that has basically plagued my computer since I've built it Yet the issue manifests itself in different ways through out the years The issue is At certain seemingly random points my computer screen freezes with no BSOD Computer is still running with Firefox freezing Random, Life. Hard in Second hard and reset required. fans going No error message Sound stops Mouse is not responsive on screen Nothing works Screen is frozen on the last picture A holding down of the power button for a hard reset is the only way to recover Through out the years since I've changed graphics cards and RAM chips in order to try and solve this Random, hard freezing in Firefox and Second Life. Hard reset required. problem I've found that the RAM had no effect on the issue but the graphics cards perhaps did Back in I had constant random freezing at random intervals during the days of the week whilst basically doing any thing An SLI set up of two Geforce s I finally discarded one of the graphics cards to only run one and that seemingly fixed most random freezing issues for some time Though it did happen on some rare occasion that I could not explain How ever In I upgraded my graphics card to a GeForce GTX OC and found that issues immediately arose again I could not activity render videos in Adobe Premiere Elements whilst working on the video editing software with out a hard freeze Basically unable to render videos in real-time whilst working on them any more More issues started occurring later with this same card When watching Youtube videos in Firefox browser Occasionally with increasing frequency watching videos in the browser were causing this problem Then I discovered the option to disable 'hardware acceleration' and the problem hasn't arisen in the browser since Come Using a program known as 'Second Life' that does tend to use a lot of resources When computer resources were being strained too hard this problem did return on a rare occasion when I was running dual clients of this program In this same program known as 'Second Life' had gone through some updates and now for some reason the freezing issue has reared its ugly head in a big way Some times I can't be on this program for even an hour and the hard freeze occurs To fix this issue from that point I've tried updating to the latest graphics drivers No success I've even upgraded my graphics card to a GeForce GTX Ti and again updated to the latest graphics drivers The issue still persists and renders use of them program unusable I am able to play games such as Guild Wars Grand Theft Auto Trove etc with out issue how ever I do not know what is causing the issue in order to know what I need to fix My current setup is ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report Operating System Windows Professional -bit Build Service Pack win sp gdr - Language English Regional Setting English System Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co Ltd System Model X A-UD BIOS Award Modular BIOS v PG Processor Intel R Core TM i CPU GHz CPUs GHz Memory MB RAM Available OS Memory MB RAM Page File MB used MB available Windows Dir C Windows DirectX Version DirectX DX Setup Parameters Not found User DPI Setting Using System DPI System DPI Setting DPI percent DWM DPI Scaling Disabled DxDiag Version bit Unicode ------------ DxDiag Notes ------------ Display Tab No problems found Sound Tab No problems found Sound Tab No problems found Sound Tab No problems found Input Tab No problems found -------------------- DirectX Debug Levels -------------------- Direct D retail DirectDraw retail DirectInput retail DirectMusic retail DirectPlay retail DirectSound retail DirectShow retail --------------- Display Devices --------------- Card name NVIDIA GeForce GTX Ti Manufacturer NVIDIA Chip type GeForce GTX Ti DAC type Integrated RAMDAC Device Key Enum PCI VEN DE amp DEV C amp SUBSYS amp REV A Display Memory MB Dedicated Memory MB Shared Memory MB Current Mode x bit H... after scrapping through my last issue (dud ram). i now have a couple more probs. first networks connections folder is empty. second my useless wireless usb thingy doesnt work nemore (i think is cause of prob one). and third there are no network connection icons in the system tray. i am currently using the dud comp right now to type this, cabled lan works fine, just the only way to get the status is with ipconfig. have tried the winsock repair tool thingy, didnt work. tried netsh reset catalog thingy spat out some dumb error about not being able to get the information it needed something to do with a class not bein registered, no specifics of course (dear god that would be smart for windows). and thats where im stuck. cant find neinfo on wat class is stuffed or how to fix it.

ne ideas peoples

Amd 64 [email protected] 1800Mhz
MSI NForce4 chipset MB
Nvidia 6600 256MB PCi-ex.
seagate barracude 80Gb

an overclocking utility which came along with MB used to show my system as 1800MHZ as 200 MHZ with a multiplier of 9. some tweaking made it 201Mhz and x 9 and hence my system ran to 1809 MHz. but now even after i have reset the overclock and system shows 200x9 yet the running sped of the machine is 1809 Mhz and somehow i feel the macine is very laggy, ie Windows media player /winamp takes a few secs to open up etc. . . n so on.

why could this be happening and any solutions?

I have followed the tutorial on this site to reset the reliability history - trash RAC files etc. The graph clears ok but a few hours later back comes all the old problem. I am thinking there must be another file hidden away that is being accessed for the data. I would not be bothered normally but I check components on this test bed machine and it would be easier to see whats happening with a clean graph when I switch bits around.

Welcome to the forum,

Have you cleared the problem reports, Problem Reports and Solutions - Clear History

Or erased them from the event viewer?

That was what I had to do to keep them from showing back up in a few hours.

Hi I had to do a factory reset on my friends Toshiba and now it wont update. My friend has a Toshiba Satellite Laptop which is a Windows 8.1 64 bit, 4 gig. The reason for a reset was do to constant freezing and video lagging. There were several things that were ocurring. I had done scans to make sure is was not a virus issue before doing a factory reset.

I have checked services to make sure it was turned on.

I tried to upload a snipit to show you the error but for some reason it wont let me download it Argh! It should have downloaded.

Here is the error code on the update page 8024A008

[YOU************//www.Fix Corrupted Icons and Shortcuts in Windows 7 8 or Vista - YouTube[/YOUTUBE]

All you have to do is go to your appdata>Local>IconCache.db (if you don't see it you'll have to enable hidden file in the Local folder "Properties when you right click the folder")
and then delete it.

Then you have to go on task manager>Processes tab and end task of "explorer.exe"
Then you have to go to the "Applications" tab and click new task button and restart explorer.exe by typing "explorer.exe"
Thats it!!! Hope it helped!!!

Hi all,

I really need some help, I bought a surface pro from a friend yesterday, it had been turned on before I got it so I thought I would reset to factory settings, all was fine until the reset was around 90%, then a box appeared saying "the computer has restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the installation".
But when it restarts the same message pops up.
Any help welcome as I really don't have a clue what to do now.

Many thanks

Mark B

A:Surface pro 2 wont boot after reset. PLEASE HELP

Hi there

I think you'll need to re-install Windows -- in the BIOS you can disable protected boot so you should be able to boot a new recovery USB for a Windows re-installation. There's tutorials on this site about making a recovery USB.

I am using Windows XP media center edition.

The folder called "Desktop" now has a picture set as its thumbnail and it displays whenever i play a video in windows media player.
I go to "properties" - "customize" and press "restore default" in the "folder pictures" section and then apply the new setting but it wont go away.
I tried to find this photo on the hard drive to delete it but i cant find it anywhere.

I've included some screens to show you what I mean:

Someone let me know how to sort this out please

A:Folder thumbnail wont Reset

drummerguy101, First go into Folder Options>View tab and choose "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files {Recommended}", click Apply/OK then open that Desktop folder and find the Thumbs.db file, right click it and delete it and reboot your computer. You can then go back into Folder Options>View tab and reverse the changes you made if you wish to.

A:Vista wont do a factory reset

Start by telling us why you want to do a reset. There may be an easier way to fix whatever the problem is. A reset should always be the final option, never the 1st. We also need to know the make/model of your computer or laptop.
