I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
cmouli Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about activation problems since you reset your Win10 laptop and wanted to help. The Win10 Upgrade is know, in some cases, to corrupt the Recovery partition stored there by the OEM that built the original machine. This pretty much guarantees that no HP Recovery is going to work.Your original Win10 was activated through something known as Digital Entitlement -- which is what MS terms an in-place upgrade from a prior OS. Once that is done, information about your PC is stored on the MS Activation servers and after that, any Win10 reinstall will automatically reactivate -- unless you change the version from the one that was originally activated. The product key on Win8x machines is not printed on a sticker, instead, it is embedded in the UEFI firmware of the motherboard. You can retrieve that key using this tool: Download Windows OEM Product Key Tool - MajorGeeks Once you have that, you should be able to activate Win10 using that key. I sometimes wonder about techs using tools such as Seatools, HDD regenerator etc to diagnose/repair hard drives. Do any of these tools beat Chkdsk in any way?
(besides data recovery tools, I guess those have no match in Windows).
IMO, always use the tool provided by the vender. At the time you need this tool, you don't need a 3rd party screw-up to 'help you' really mess it up.
I've said time and time again that solid state drives are the future but the truth of the matter is, traditional spinning disks still have a place inside a modern PC as a storage / backup drive. The question then becomes,...
Well I'm glad I have never bought a Seagate HD. I usually buy Western Digital, except my SSD is Samsung.
I have an old Toshiba laptop and it is unusable and I was wondering if there was a way to factory reset it without a disk.
Model # - psk2cu-s5150
I believe there's a partition that contains the OEM setup, but you need a CD (any) and to recover from the Restore partition
Hi, My first post here
I really need some help I purchased a new WD My Book 4tb and have all my videos and pictures on this drive - I have always disconnected the drive properly but tonight when I connected to the laptop I get the following message;
I cant access the drive to see if any of the files are there or not
I have not done anything other than click on the drive yet as I don't want to do anything wrong I have so much on here I don't want to lose. Thanks
You've already messed up by keeping only 1 copy of important files :/
Is H the typical drive letter designation for that drive? I assume it is what you expected since you tried to open it. Can you take a screenshot of what Disk Management looks like with the drive on and connected?
Have you tried a different USB cable or tried it on a different computer?
Hello I have a Dell Inspiron laptop I have an image of the entire hard drive that I created when I first got the computer using Acronis TrueImage and I d like to restore that image returning the laptop back to that fresh clean original state I ve done this two or three times before and it worked great each time But now there s a problem Normally I would in boots as when drive external but laptop hard Primary recognized isn't drive used connect to the laptop a USB storage backup drive that has the disk image boot the laptop from a Rescue Media CD created by Acronis then restore that disk image from the back-up drive onto the laptop s HDD When I tried it this time round the laptop s HDD was not listed in TrueImage at all I created a new rescue media disk tried it again and got the same result I then took the HDD out of the laptop connected it to Primary hard drive boots in laptop but isn't recognized when used as external drive an adapter kit that let s you power up and plug in the drive via a USB port and external power supply and tried the same procedure using my desktop to run the operation Same result The drive was not detected by Acronis The drive does not seem to spin up at all Primary hard drive boots in laptop but isn't recognized when used as external drive when it is connected Keep in mind the drive still works when installed in the laptop -- it boots into Windows XP etc When I plug the drive into my desktop the drive does not show up in Disk Management Start Right-click My Computer Manage Disk Management It doesn t show up in either of the two right-side windows so there s no way I know of to format it or do any work on it in Windows When I go to Device Manager Disk Drives I see quot USB Device quot for that drive and under Properties it is listed as quot Disk Drives quot for quot Device Type quot and its status says it is working properly So what I don t get is it works fine when it is in the laptop boots into XP etc but when connected as an external drive or when the laptop is being run off of CD the drive can t be detected and not on just one computer but multiple Is it junk Any ideas nbsp
It's a power issue. Had the same issue taking a 2.5" laptop hdd and attempting to hook up w/ a passive usb sata hdd cable. my recommendation is to use a powered usb sata cable. like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119475 having proper power will allow the USB bus to detect and power the hdd correctly. Hope this helps, take care!
Today, my external hard drive has not appeared on my PC. It did work before I went to sleep yet when I began my PC in the next morning, it didn't show. Can you please help me how to fix this?
There are a lot of different reasons for an HDD to stop showing. A few things you can try are:
Try using a different USB cable, make sure it is as short as the original one, or even shorter. This is important it terms of providing enough power for the drive to function properly.
Try connecting it to different USB ports.
Try connecting it to a different PC.
Sometimes the drive can misbehave due to insufficient power even if it appears to be spinning make sure you connect the HDD directly to the USB port and not through a USB hub.
Check if you can see the HDD in Windows Device Manager and in Disk Management. Good luck.
I have been using my external hard disk(WD My Passport Essential SE) 1 Tb, since last 6 months, but after a recent virus scan, my laptop is not showing the external hard disk, i have tried using My computer, Manage and Disk management.
I am unable to find external hard disk even in Disk management i.e. it is not showing.
So please can anyone help me in this concern......
I would really appreciate and thanks in advance
First, try accessing it from another computer to be sure it can be accessed elsewhere. The Western Digital Passport Essential has had a pretty high failure rate as seen in our shop... so the unavailable external hard disk may not have anything to do with the virus scan may have nothing to do with the problem.
In other cases, I would attempt to reinstall the Passport drive. You do not usually cause any damage to the data on the drive when you do this.
Thanks for any help in advance..
I own a WD MyBook 4TB hard drive, which I've used on Windows for the past 2 years. I got a macbook last week and hooked the drive into it, some error message came up so I figured it wouldn't work, however when I went to plug it back into my windows machine I got the "USB device not recognised" message, the laptop is windows 8. I then tried it on my fathers windows xp computer and it seemed to think it was a completely new hard drive..
I've done some googling on it but I just wanted to ask here incase I went formatting it by mistake or anything..any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you made some procedural error, allowing the Mac to alter the partition - - bad choice.
Using Windows tools, examine the partition on that drive - - should show up as
somelabel (dl): size HTFS
Healthy (other qualifiers)
Try Control Panel ->Admin Tools->Computer Mgmt->Disk Mgmt
Hi I have a few questions about my external hard drive. I play games and I noticed that my internal hard drive was getting full so I bought a new external hard drive. I was wondering if I backed up my internal hard drive to my external one and then formatted my internal hard drive, would I have to re install everything or would I be able to access my games and such. Thanks for your time its much appreciated.
You would have to e-install all of your games, and applications, and windows updates
I have a three month old Dell Dimension GHZ P Gig Ram and a gig SATA Hard Drive When I got the computer I used the files and transfer PC Relocator utility And had in Error system drives did hard Message: disk find Setup not your installed any a bunch of unwanted extras that came with it I m having a Satellite Internet system installed and they wanted a clean install of windows XP So I opened the owner s manual and got out the reinstallation disk and the problems began By the way Dell tech support s only response has been to say gee that s not right and would send a tech sometime after Christmas Anyway heres step by step what I did I boot to the Dell reinstallation disk Error Message: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your system The windows setup screen appears and loads files The next screen says welcome to setup and offers three options -to setup XP press enters To repair XP press R to exit without installing XP press F I press enter and the following message comes up Setup did not find any hard disk installed in your computer Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected And any disk related configuration is correct ect Press F to quit It dose this if I try repair also Dell had me check the connections to the HD and Motherboard They re good And debug the hard drive No luck Everything worked fine until I put in the reinstallation disk Any help would be welcome nbsp
During Setup, it will ask you if you need any extra drivers such as SCSI (or SATA in your case). If so, press F6. Now you are in trouble, because SATA drivers come on a floppy and new(er) Dells don't have a floppy anymore. Borrow a floppy-drive from another PC and install that in your Dell.
Setting up with the Dell disks, I'm not sure if they are RESTORE-disks or full XP-disks.
That may cause another problem.

Hello I need to connect power/reset buttons to dell optiplex 620, but I just can't connect them anywhere on motherboard.
I need help as fast as possible
Hello I need urgent help with resolving this as I am trying to get the harddrive showing up or at least recover files by Hard Portable Drive External Slim detected Seagate PC not I was using it at school first and my computer froze so I shut down the Seagate Portable External Hard Drive Slim not detected by PC computer and restarted without safely removing Seagate Portable External Hard Drive Slim not detected by PC the hard drive at first the PC wouldnt reboot because I had it still plugged in after unplugging it and the PC loaded up it did not recognize the hard drive anymore I have tried it on several PCs including the one at home all using Windows and none of them recognize it I tried all USB ports on my PC and none of them work the light on the hard drive is ON so I know there is no connectivity issue I tried several free trial softwares even the ones by Seagate and none of them recognized the drive so I cannot use their tools for recovering files or detecting the hard drive When I check the Disk Management it does not show there When I check the Device Manager it does not show under USB controllers but it DOES show under Disk Drives I also checked and the drive is up to date The Model is BUP Slim BK In my quick launch the drive is recognized there and gives me the option to Eject it but it doesn t actually Eject it when I click on it it either stop responding or does nothing unless I manually unplug it EDIT After a really long time the Eject message says the device is already in use which is probably why it doesnt Safely eject nbsp
I am also having the same problem, as I need to get some stuff off my hard drive but it does not show up on any of it, was just wondering if you had found a way to fix this yet?
Look no further than a solid state drive for breakneck speed. If a large-capacity drive for storage is what you're after, however, traditional spinning hard drives are still the best bet in terms of price per GB. And if you...
On a more interesting note, Seagate is already shipping 8TB HDD-s to its select customers, with 10TB ones to follow.
Besides, nothing beats the current 6TB Enterprise offer from Seagate anyway, in terms of price+performance+capacity. Let Western Digital lag behind as it does
Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.
Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:
After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.
I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:
(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).
I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.
Hi there Sedhadi,
If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.
When booting up my computer, directly after auto-detecting SATA devices, my computer regularly gives me an error that alternately reads "Primary Hard Disk Failure, Press F1 to Resume..." or "Secondary Hard Disk Failure, Press F1 to Resume..." Sometimes the word "Slave" or "Master" are there after the words "Primary" or "Secondary" in there as well. While the content of the message varies, the result is usually the same: The startup process lags after auto-detecting the drives, then gives me this error.
I have three SATA hard drives and a DVD drive plugged in to my mb via SATA. When no HDD are detached, but I have boot media in the DVD drive, the computer starts up quickly and normally, with no errors. When any or all of the HDDs are plugged in, I receive the above error. I borrowed a HDD from my roommate, plugged it in, attempted to boot up and still received the error. None of the HDD are bad, and it would be a pretty big coincidence for all four I've tested to fail at once.
What could the problem be?
When I plug in just one or two of the HDD + the DVD drive, the computer boots fine. When I plug in three HDD + DVD drive, failure! Do I perhaps need to upgrade my power supply?
Hi, sometimes my children play on my phone Galaxy Note 3 but I have to worry about my phone since they have drown one spare battery I just purchased from mpj and wiped my phone twice already. My question is how can I protect my Note 3 and keep my children away from some bad websites?
Thanks in advanced.
Hmm; iPhones use iTunes and iCloud for backups. I am sure there are other SYNC programs which can be used for your Note3
Hey guys weird problem here The TB internal drive in my PC started slowly dying in December and my brother got me an SSD additional and connecting when laggy hard drives PC sluggish for Christmas I installed it and it works amazing flawlessly and I love it When I attempted to make my old dying drive a secondary hard drive Windows PC laggy and sluggish when connecting additional hard drives recognized it fine despite the SATA connection broken off and I was able to salvage what I wanted from it The speed of the transfer was blazing and I was pretty happy but I noticed Windows getting insanely laggy and sluggish The mouse would stop moving every few inches and the keyboard would stop responding Instead of normal lag such as me typing this sentence nothing happening and then it appearing in full a few seconds later when the lag would catch up it would be a jumble of letters For example if I typed quot wow my computer is going slow right now quot it would come out quot wom mpui gin sright n quot That s a new type of lag for me as my PC has never had issues I assumed this was due to the death of the drive and Windows having problems recognizing it or reading it Sure enough when I disconnected it everything ran smoothly I have an iOmega TB external drive LDHD-UP - don t judge it was on sale that I m not too fond of but I use regularly for storage and backup I usually have it plugged into the back of my PC and this presents a whole other issue which I need another thread for but I ve dealt with it fine and it normally works all right However I found out it s USB compatible and my PC has outlets on the top so I wanted to keep it plugged into there But when I do that I experience that exact same type of lag as before when the internal hard drive was plugged in It s persistent and near-constant but it stops the second I turn off the hard drive I ve disabled antivirus I ve ran disckchecks I ve formatted none of it makes a difference Does anyone know what would be causing this with separate hard drives connected in completely different ways Any help would be greatly appreciated nbsp
I don't know the answer but will comment about the issue of lag in typing. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and I know when the batteries need replacing because the keyboard behaves exactly like yours and the mouse stops moving the cursor properly. Maybe your issue's connected with the power being drawn when you have the two drives connected. Don't rush out and upgrade your psu though. I only switch on my usb external hard drive for the occasions I need it.
I am building a new system, only part used is the power supply. My motherboard can't detect my hard drive. I tried switching cables but it only detects my dvd drive. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
First make shure the data & power cables are plugged in securely, on both the MB and hard drive. and no there is not a power cable for the hard drive on the MB.
Is there any way of sharing hard drives/folder over the internet with the client side need to install anything.
I.e use add network location option in my computer
Or a client programme that is user friendly
The server side will need to run on my computer,
looked at FreeNas thats not an option,
Filezilla looks like it the best option server side of things but uses a client programe.
Im happy to run any programmes/OS's in a VM if that were needed.
Thanks in Advance
I had a new PC so I thought I would do a recovery disk on a separate partition of my parent's disk. Turns out windows wipes out everything regardless of partition when it does that. So now lifelong memories are gone and I'm freaking out! I used EaseUS to make different partitions which were deleted. After I found that the partition I chose stayed the same size but was renamed RECOVERY and it had the recovery data in it. However the rest was "unused" and so I dragged the RECOVERY to make full use of the disk and then I started scanning it deeply with hard drive recovery software. I am now through scanning with my 2nd program now (1st one didn't give me the files I needed) and I'm using RecoverMyFiles. The problem is I'm not really getting back any of the files I had deleted by windows, but I get some stupid windows files which were probably deleted in the recovery process!! PLEASE help me!!! I am desperate. Future hanging in balance thank you.
There are quite a few programs you could try, I have had most success with Recuva by Piriform, but recently this program was said to be excellent by a user,
Obviously it's worthwhile trying both of them.
I cloned my failing hard drive (a 160gb) to a new one (500gb). The installation seemed to go smoothly enough (it was my first time though) as it just required me to stay grounded and remove about 4-5 screws. When I loaded the PC up it wouldnt start the first time so I had to a Windows repair, which didn't seem to do anything except now it worked (it said it failed or something). I then had an issue with Windows 7 claiming to not be genuine although for one reason or another that stopped. Now my issue is that I am unable to access the additional memory of my new hard drive, I am able to access the cloned portion but not the rest (about 316gb). Any help would be appreciated, my PC is a Dell Latitude E6400 if that helps.
It is absolutely normal not to see the rest of the free space in the moment. When you clone a drive you create the exact same image of old drive on the new one. This includes the size of the original HDD. However if you go to Disk Management ( type diskmgmt.msc in the search in the start menu and hit enter) you will see that you have one partition of 160GB and the rest of the space will be listed as unallocated. To use it you have two options ? you can create a second partition or you can extend the original one to take all the available space.
To create a new second partition just right-click on the unallocated space and select ?New Simple Volume?. This will starts a wizard to guide you through the rest of the process. First it will ask about the size of the partition. To use all the remaining space just type in the same value you have for Maximum disk space. Click Next.
Then you will get to choose and available drive letter to assign to this partition. Choose one and click Next.
Then you get to the Format partition window. You should choose ?Format volume with the following settings: ?. For the file system is best to leave NTFS. Allocation unit size as default. You can also put a label for the volume here. Then tick the box for ?Perform a Quick Format. ? Click Next. Then Click Finish. And you're done.
If at any point Windows pops up with the following message ?The operation selected will convert the disk to dynamic... are you sure you want to continue? ? click NO as this will most probably make your Windows unbootable and you will have to reinstall it.
If you want to extend the existing partition right-click on 160GB partition and select ?Extend Volume?. It will start the wizard and will only ask about how much space to add. Just select the maximum available space here and click Next, then click Finish. Once done your existing partition will be bigger and you'll be able to use all the space on your new HDD.
Hope that helps.
My 320 GB Seagate external hard drive is detected but not showing up in my computer. What should I do?
In cmd> diskpart> list volume it does not show up. (screenshot attached)
In Device Manager it gets detected. (screenshot attached)
In disk management it shows up as 'unallocated'. If I initialize it, will I lose all data on the drive? It had 4 partitions. (screenshot attached)
In My Computer also it does not show up. (screenshot attached)
Even BIOS recognizes it.
What to do? I don't want to lose any data on the drive. If I initialize it in device manager will I lose data?
I was installing window XP on my computer, usually I remove the external drive but this time I did not. The external drive was shown as 4 drives in partition manager during installation. But the installation failed. The next time I was installing windows again, the external drive was shown as 1 single unknown or unrecognized drive. I'm not sure if it was unknown or unrecognized. I'm sure I didn't format it. So what I need to do now? I don't want to lose any data.
Yes, if you initialize it you will 'lose' everything. You will want to try something like [email protected] Recovery or maybe Easeus Partition Recovery.
My Buffalo HD which is actually a WD 500GB Hard drive. I opend it up and connected via SATA adapter but still the problem persists. I checked the drivers. Looked for clicking noise as in dead hard drive but none of those problems seems to be there. Also I tried formatting it but was unable to do so. Can anyone tell me whats the cause? It still may be the head problem but its not clicking as a dead hard drive does. It also seems to be spinning just fine but can't get to the root of the problem. Does anyone knows whats the problem?
Could be some issue on the PCB. Suppose if you were really dedicated to getting your data back you could buy the same drive off eBay or wherever and swap the boards. That may be more difficult to do since Buffalo may not have stuck to WD the whole time OR WD supplied a special series of drives to Buffalo. Check the model numbers to be sure before going that route.
My old hard drive was a sata drive but it failed so I had an old ide 80gb barracuda 7200rpm drive that I wanted to install windows on but when I load the windows installation and goto custom it wont show my drive. My bios detects it its just windows . I tried using diskpart and even formating the drive to ntfs witha complete whip but still no luck .
Perhaps the hard drive's jumper setting is incorrect. Are there any other IDE devices connected on the same cable as the HDD?
I have 2 new external hard discs do show on my computer .They are running but not showing in PC.What to do ? Thank you
I'm not completely certain that I understood your situation. I wonder if it's possible to clarify the question? Otherwise Disk Management is a good place to start looking for a missing HDD.
If the HDD is brand new you might need to initialize it. This is needed if below the disk it says ?Not Initialized?. Right-click on the Disk that says ?Not Initialized? and click ?Initialize Disk?. Then you will have the option to choose between MBR and GPT. If the drive is more than 2 TB you should use GPT, if not you could use MBR as well. Once the Disk is listed as Basic and online right click the unallocated space and click create a ?New Simple Volume?. For the file system choose ?NTFS? if you want to use the HDD on Windows.
Hope that helps.
So, when I built my PC I installed the OS on a HDD drive with the thoughts that I could later transfer it to SSD,
(did it before using hard drive cloning software to copy the OS drive to a new drive and then once working formatting the old drive.)
however when I started doing some reserch on cloneing software I noticed that windows 7 might not be cloneable (my past experiances are with XP) since there are mixed reviews on each bit of software out there both on Amazon and on the web. sevral report that windows 7 sees the clone as an unlicenced copy and refuses to boot. others say the clone drive misses it's boot file.
can some people advise me on if any of these facts are true or not?
Cloning should work fine if you do it properly with windows 7. It's possible that windows can throw up a licensing issue, but very unlikely. In the event that it does, call Microsoft and they should be able to get it sorted out for you.
As for the bootability of the drive, cloning the drive's data does not necessarily make it bootable, but if you look online you'll see some cloning tutorials that include a section for rewriting the MBR on your SSD to make it the primary bootable drive in case it ends up not booting properly. This isn't hard to do and usually isn't a necessary step.
Also just keep in mind that simply cloning the SSD will probably result in an unaligned drive, so make sure that you get it properly aligned. Some cloning software has an aligning option built into the cloning process that you'll want to select.
So go for it and come back if you're having any issues.
Sorry I must not have sent the last post correctly I am new to this site So I will try again I was getting ready to upgrade to bigger hard drive or drives Before doing that I needed to take the old hard drives out to obtain some information off the labels I did so and while they where out I cleaned the Mounting slots a little better than using just No drives to SATA Power hard air Having done that I re-installed them both When I turned on the power button the button lit up and the fans were running But No Power to SATA hard drives it No Power to SATA hard drives does not seem that the hard drives are getting any power as I can t hear or feel any thing Plus the computer is not booting No Power to SATA hard drives I don t recall unplugging anything other than the two hard drives But I also notice that I have a short cable bundle with two white plugs with three pins and one empty pin hole on the other end a black connection with with five connector slots with one middle on blank That makes me think that I unplugged the power to the hard drive someplace along the ling As I have a wire bundle that has two SATA power connectors that are plugged in But their are three white female plugs marked P P and P which are not connected to anything in that wire bundle I don t know at this point if the power comes through that bundle from the power source Of if I do not have the power plugged into the lope I hope that somebody can help me figure this out and let me know if I burnt out the hard drives and have to start over with my recover disk reloading windows and going from there nbsp
How would I close this post out. Dumb me had the monitor plugged into an unused VGA port. It only took me two and a half days to figure that out. I wanted to let others know to check and see if they have everything plugged in where it should be. Including the VGA or other monitor cables.
Hi, I have a Verbatim Store n' go ex hard drive which used to work perfectly with usb 3.0 and 2.0. A few weeks ago it stopped working with 2.0 and now not even with 3.0. When I plug it in the hard disk starts to rotate and lights up normally, but is never shown on the drive list. The computer doesn't even do the beep sound when a usb device is connected. I tried on 2 different pc's but they show no result.
Any kind of help is greatly appreciated
I hav a Toshiba 1 TB external HDD. It was working fyn till today. Now it is not showing in My Computer or Disk Management. It does make the sound when I connect or disconnect it from the laptop. and the HDD light remains on.
Please advise how to fix this
Go under the Device Manager and uninstall all the USB Controllers then reboot your PC don't connect the 1 TB just yet. Make sure nothing is connect to those ports like a keyboard or mouse otherwise they'll lockup. Once rebooted Windows will rebuild the table for USB Controllers. Now you should be all set. Unless you have some sort of conflict with IRQ or Registry setting. There is a free app called USBDVIEW what you would do is disconnect from all non-disconnected USB devices that are stored on the PC these settings can cause all sort of issues.
My bother had deleted my laptop partition files and folders when attempting to extend my C partition. All my stored partition movies were lost and could not be found in Recycle Bin. Do you know where these partition videos are? I really want to view these videos again. What can I do to rescue them? Thank you for any advice!
Sorry to hear you are experiencing such an issue.
Your data is stilll there somewhere as long as you don't overwrite it. If you save new data, it would rewrite your previous files.
I did some research for you and I found a threat that you might find helpful:
I really hope this works for you!
I recently bought a external hard disk of WD (My Passport Ultra) 1TB. It was working fine untill now. Now there is a problem going on. I have used only 656GB of space but it now show that I have only 4GB of storage left. Earlier it was showing 257 GB of space left from 913GB but now it shows the above. I can't understand what is the problem. If anybody could guide me it would an immense help. Thank you.

Maybe @jobeard could help here. What OS are you running? OS X or Windows?
Hi I have bought a laptop for my daughter its harddrive is 750gb but when I found it it is two hard drives.one initialled OS and the other data how is this supposed to work.regards Martin
I know some manufactures have different ways they produce their setups, but most of the time its a partition and not another hard drive. What it does is store the System Backup / Restore on one partition so that you can reset the laptop to factory settings and the main "hard drive" (usually C prompt) is the partition you use on a daily basis. Unless you physically looked inside the laptop and saw 2 different hard drives, it should be just one hard drive that is split partitions. What is the make and model of this laptop? We can determine what setup you have with that information.
I'm trying to partition my hard drive, when I click shrink, it takes me to the shrinking window and it says:
Total size before shrink: 704749 MB
Size available to shrink: 7185 MB
Enter the amount of space to shrink: 7185 MB
Total size after shrink: 697564 MB
I don't understand how I have so much space, but I can only shrink it 7185. It is an NTFS.
Here's some screenshots
Some files that are read only are preventing you from shrinking beyond a certain point while those files are open.
My suggestion would be to use partitioning software that is bootable. Boot to the disk and shrink your partition without windows running.
There are several freeware apps available to select from. The one I use is Partition Wizard Boot CD.
My hard doesn't show up anymore.when I plug it in I hear 2 beep sounds coming from it and then nothing.any one now what the problem might be.
Probably an internal hardware failure on the drive. Hope you had your data backed up from that drive.
Tried just about everything but I still can't seem to get my external hard drive to show up in my disk management or computer. It say it's installed and ready to use but I don't see it.. only in the device manager and in devices and printers I can see it.. but nowhere else.. I'm working with windows 7 upgraded from windows xp but has be downgraded which was originally windows vista I think.. A friend gave me a computer and I had it upgraded.. can any one help me get my computer and external hard drive straight. Thanks.

The Seagate Momentus 5400.6 hard drive I'm using is from my old laptop it has 4 disks.
After I put it in the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclosure, and connect it to my new laptop it does not show up in 'My Cumputer' and 'Disk Management', but displays in the 'device and printer' section of control pannel.
I also can't eject the hard drive, even when I'm not doing anything to it, the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclusre's blue signal light just keeps flashing for a while then goes off for a sec, then resume flashing again.
My laptop also keeps trying to install the hard drive.
I tried reinstall the hard drive's driver, but that did not solve the problem.
Have you tried using different drive enclosure other than the IT-CEO IT-700?
I have a Dell Precision T which I just purchased off of Ebay Recognized Possible Hard Formation, Second Not Drive Raid It came with gb of ram and gb hard drives installed In quot my computer quot it shows drive quot c quot but not the second drive This computer supports raid configurations but when I received it it had no operating system installed I installed windows ultimate bit This computer has quad core processors and I have been noticing a Possible Raid Formation, Second Hard Drive Not Recognized slower response time lately which leads me to believe it may be in one of the raid modes even though they are supposed to be faster most of the time Possible Raid Formation, Second Hard Drive Not Recognized I went into the bios and the setting it is on is to automatically detect raid configuration in the drives and if not detected the regular mode I read some information about raid setup and cannot find the software quot Intel Matrix Storage Console quot on the computer to help verify or change settings Could this be an extra program like drivers that are downloaded from the Dell website because they don t normally come with a regular windows install If someone is familiar with configuring raid formations could you please help me determine what my system is set on and how to set it properly I would be satisfied to not have raid active as I don t need that kind of constant backup My work is not that important I can back up important files in other ways nbsp
What shows up in the Disk Manager vs the Device manager?
My External hard drive wont open without format I try doing format it gets stuck I try opening computer > mange > disk management it wont open unless I take it out and gets stuck and gives me connecting to virtual disk service
please please help me! im freaking out I need this hard drive to work I need help
If you need this drive because there is data on it, formatting is the last thing you want to do.
Recently a hard drive named OS (X: ) (space inserted so it isn't posted as a smiley face) appeared in my computer. It seems to be identical in memory to my actual hard drive, but is actually empty. What exactly should be done about this?
Not sure off hand but I'd open up Disk Management to see what it says there.
Old Dell computer running Windows XP that was never backed up and I am trying to recover files and photos. I get NTLDR is missing when I boot. I've used Testdisk/Photorec to try to recover my data but when going through the recovered data it seems to be all system files that I know nothing about. I used Ubuntu on the Dell to run Testdisk. I also hooked up the hard disk to my laptop with a hard disk adapter and got the same results.I also ran a NTLDR boot disk but ended up with the same NTLDR is missing message. I dont have a XP recovery disk. Anybody that has had this issue please help!

If you have access to another PC or laptop then you can connect the hard drive in to that machine and get the files you wanted to recover from your hard drive in there.

I am a beginner of hardware. I find two series of SSD to compare, 840 EVO and M500, because the specifications and the prices of them are approximate.
Both of them use SATA 3, so you need to compare with the read speed and the write speed, if you prefer faster one. The sequential read speed of 840 is 540MB/s, and the sequential write speed is 410MB/s. M500 is slower, but the performance of M500 is great as well, its Shock-resistant design makes it more durable than 840. The most important thing of SSD is the controller, 840 uses 3-core Samsung MDX controller, M500 uses Marvell?s latest controller, maybe the second one is better.
This is my poor review, how to compare them with more details, give me your advice.
Read in-depth reviews such as this:
I have a Western Death Disk Hard After Click of Digital Gig Drive which experienced the Click Of Death Hard Disk After Click of Death while accessing the drive It took out the last gig of the drive The first half on Check Disk works perfectly But when check disk attempted to go through the section where the COD hit it jammed the program and stopped saying it wasn t able to repair the area The drive was used for music storage in an automation system I partitioned the damaged area off so it cannot be used or accessed When the drive was connected to the last system I had it in the system s SMART said to quot back up all data that failure was eminent quot After partitioning off the ripped up area of the platters is it possible to use this drive as a slave only I may be coming off sounding like a mad scientist with this thought But if it s possible at all to continue using this drive I d love to use it for storage only No OS and keep the partitioned area marked off so it s no longer accessed what so ever I m I barking up the wrong tree with this thing or is it still able to work All data which was on it before the damaged area was saved easily The good section still works and saves data without issue Just curious about this If it works I ll use it if not I ll replace it and use it for a paperweight nbsp

I partitioned the damaged area off so it cannot be used or accessed. When the drive was connected to the last system I had it in, the system's SMART said to "back up all data that failure was eminent".Click to expand...
My experience with drives has been exactly as the Smart warning. Once the drive starts to fail, it will not stop deteriorating. I would say the drive is history and should not be trusted further, not even as a slave.
Hello all!!!! My name is John. I am trying to find some help with an issue that arose after I installed a new hard drive in my computer. I started getting a message that stated:
C:\Users\Owner\App Data\Local\Conduit\API Support\API Support.dll
Anyone know how I can repair this? I saved an image of my system before installing the new hard drive and then just downloaded the image to the new hard drive. HELP!!! please!!
You might just need to run some registry cleaners to fix and remove those corrupt registry keys.
My computer recognizes that the hard drive is there as local disk E but wont actually load. I can get it to load on my tv but it wont play my movies. Please help it has a lot of important things on there,
You could try running chkdsk /f in command prompt to check and fix errors on your drive.
I have had a look round the posts but nothing I try stops the internal drive getting accessed.
I have unchecked the CD autorun using TweakUI (this worked for someone else)
I have temp disabled AVG along with BoostSpeed and Team Viewer
The only process running apart from sys idle is svchost.exe (1%)
I hope someone out there manages to work their magic as they did the last time I posted here!
Sounds like the System Index service is running.
When you find that happening, disconnect from the Internet to be sure MS Update is not running or something on your system is phoning home to be sure.
To see all Internet connections from your PC, grab a copy of CurrPorts - - runas admin and you will see everything. Click on the column heading Remote Host Name to get active connections at the top if the list. The menu Options is used to customize the display; here's my list
display Listen, Established, TCP, UDP, IPv6,
display port in The Address,
sort on refresh,
Ask Before Any Action
That last one is interesting; running as admin, you can Close a port or Kill the application with that port.
CurrPorts identifies all ports on the pc (mine number 112 as I write) and if I select all ports with a Remote Address, I see I have 20 connections.
btw: Remote Addresses shown as 127.0.0.1:nnn are local services (like a proxy or AV service), so out of the 20, only two are actually remote - - both HTTP browser connections.
I have to say I am a little worried about my hard drive. Often I bought it for the purpose to protect my game videos, and some program files. For a long time, it behaved rightly with my HP windows 7 desktop when directly used. Sometimes ago I decided to let this old PC alone and bought a Macbook pro. The latter has no such a SATA interface for me to input the data from this drive. For the convenience, I borrowed this SATA dock from my brother . ( I have to admit previously I once use another dock to exchange the data . )
My mac just could not recognize my drive as a normal one. I am not sure where the problem lies in. The key is that other drives have no similar issue with this dock. I wonder if anything happen before in the process I handle the data with another dock.
Grateful for any advice.
Yeah. At present I have no such another one to have a try. I will turn to my friend see if any gadget he has to test my drive.
Okay not really very good at this but my laptop stopped working so I took hd out and connected it to anotherlaptop through usb lead it appears in my disk management (although it shows up grey instead of black or blue if that makes sense to anyone) but it wont show in my computer I have a load od family photos on this drive and would really love some help and will send out good karma to all who try to help me many thanks in advance
Hi techmichellenot. When you say it stopped working,is there anything on the screen when you power up, or any indication that the system passed it's POST procedure (Power On Self Test), usually indicated by a beep before Windows itself tries to boot up?. Any error messages seen?. Sounds like you put the drive in an external case that can connect via USB. If there is indeed a problem with the disk drive and it's not a physical problem with the drive (maybe a corrupted Windows boot file, etc),your system may have a Recovery procedure that will reinstall your OS without erasing your data files (called a non destructive OS reinstall) as opposed to a destructive which erases everything and reinstalls the OS. I would check your documentation to see if your laptop has such a procedure.
I have WD 1 TB passport, and all its operations are very very slow.
I cant use it at all. I have all the important documents in it.
Please someone help me out here.
The only thing I can really recommend is to defragment the external HDD using a program such as Defraggler.
If that doesnt help, you may have a virus on the HDD, in that case, I would recommend posting in the malware forums.
Hey Guys. I would like to upgrade my computer. I've got a 40 GB HDD right now. Is it possible to add another 80 GB HDD to my computer? If so, how? Could I use both the HDDs?
Another question. I've got 512 MB RAM right now. And they are of PC2700 type. Is it possible to remove them and add PC3200 type RAM? And while inserting RAM, is it true that we should put it in sets of two? I mean if I want 1 GB RAM, could I put 2x 256 MB and one 512MB or should I put only 4x 256 MB?
A general rule of thumb but not an absolute is, you can put in better RAM. RAM will simply down-clock to the highest settings the motherboard supports. But like I said though, it is not an absolute, as you can still find incompatible RAM.

Before we can answer with a direct answer, we need to know if you are working with IDE and/or SATA ports. I'm certain your machine is IDE, but I'm not certain it has free IDE and/or SATA ports. Short answer is yes you can, it all depends on the availability of port and finding a drive that will connect.

Your machine likely doesn't support Dual Channel Mode. I'm almost positive DDR memory doesn't support Dual Channel, but I'm not going to swear to it. If that is the case then it wouldn't really matter as long as the RAM is compatible with your system. The best way is to stay with RAM you know is compatible or is recommended for your board. Dual Channel though is the main reason, you would want matched RAM modules. With all that said, I personally always like keeping the same speed modules regardless of whether they needed to be matched.
I have an ASUS MeMO Pad 7 inch non HD keep that in mind total different situation. But I cannot Factory Hard Reset it by using any normal button combinations or reset button. I have done a lot of research but have come up empty. The reasoning behind the need to perform factory reset is the number pin to log in was forgotten. Yea, yea I know I should not use it but it happened so non the less any ideas?
So you can't get to the factory reset menu? Holding the power button will turn the tablet off right?

Hi all I have custom built pc and in last month now and then it switches off I believed it to be a faulty psu but now ive notice blue screen couple of times I looked it up and it points to faulty hard drive .also on restart I get few chkdsk .so I thought ok I got spare harddrive ill clone main one on to that and use that but when I plug it in it shows up but making a weird noise, also secured by bit lock,, I put password in and then it dissapears with error something like cannot be specified ...does this mean both hard drives have failed or could it still be psu maybe not giving enough power..thanks in advance.. any more info please ask
A noise coming from the hard drive you replace is faulty,,, it's indicates mechanical failure..you better buy new one...
I have a 500gb external hard drive which, up until a few days ago, was working absolutely fine.
When I would plug it in to my laptop the device was found under 'my computer'.but would not open. Instead when I tried to open it my computer froze and the 'not responding' message was shown, resulting in a forced close of my computer. Now when I attach the hard drive and open 'my computer' the hard drive does not show at all, but 'my computer' still shows the message 'not responding', resulting in a forced close.
I've been on to a couple of forums already and tried the route of right clicking 'my computer', 'manage' and 'disk management'; but the hard drive does not appear there.
I'm at a total loss what to do and would massively appreciate your help as I have backed up company data on to this hard drive.
Thank you in advance!
Hey pcrquals. I would try the drive in another pc to narrow down where the problem is, a problem with the drive itself, or a problem with the pc recognizing the drive, which might be a problem with the USB port(s) or with the USB drivers. Does another USB device like a flashdrive work when plugged into the same port?
I have an external WD hard drive, I accidently removed the network file and folder sharing componet. Now when I go to access my hard drive it tells me that access is denied. I dont want to lose the data. Is there a way to restore this opion and gain access? PLease help. I oringially was trying to limit access to this hard drive.
Google How to Take Ownership for the instructions your version of Windows. Try taking ownership of files/folders on the drive
You saved an old hard drive (or three) from previous computers and now you?d like to get at the data on them. Is there an easy way to access the data without cracking open your current computer and mounting the hard drives inside?
very good. I was trying to explain this to someone. Now I think I will just send then the Web Page.
I've been having this problem for a few months now. I recently built my own computer, having been on a lap top for a couple of years, and found my old external hard drive. I plugged it in to the new computer, and it said something about needing to be formatted, which I promptly did due to nothing of importance being on it. I went to sleep, and woke up to see that it couldn't be formatted.
This is where my issue begins. It no longer appears in Computer, or Disk Management. Disk Management won't even load if I have the drive plugged in. There seems to be no way at all to format the drive, since Computer, and Disk Management both don't load when the drive is plugged in. Any help?
I have a similar problem. I have an old external hard drive and it wont showed up or open under my computer or disk management. I tried to open it under disk management but there is no way to be found. The files F, G, H, etc are empty. I really appreciate an extra help here since I am not a computer expert. Thank you!!!!
How serious is this? I'm running on a Dell laptop with a Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller.
It is saying that I should back up all of my important files because of possible hard drive failure.
PLEASE HELP? I don't know how to fix this because I don't know what it means.
It telling you your hard drive is on its way out. You can try running a check disk and see if that helps. But to be on the safe side you should back up your personal files.
I have a 2TB My Book Live that I and my housemates use to store media. Initially I was the primary contributor to the drive, and at that time there were no issues. Eventually, someone else began adding files to the server. Since then, any folder that someone else has added files to cannot be accessed by me unless I am logged in as a guest. If I log in as an administrator the folders show up but are greyed out. This only happened with one user. I am running a Mac, and they were using Windows, but other Windows users have added files without causing this issue. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if anyone knows of a workaround other than always logging out as administrator when I want to access those folders.
Thanks for any help
This appears to be an issue on how the drive was formatted and hard disk permissions. Before I go through a bunch of steps to fix, since this is an older post, is this still an issue or have you resolved it?!
Post back please.
I have an external hard disk of Samsung 650GB which got damaged when I was transferring some files to my pc through it. Now when I connect to any PC or Laptop it shows the safely remove icon but there is no letter assigned to it and also doesn't show up in My Computer though it can be seen in Disk Management.
I tried Mini Tool Partition Wizard but when I create a new partition it stops at 90%. I tried wiping out the partition but to no avail.
Is there any solution for it??? Please help.
I would check the manufacturers site for a windows utility to low level format it. If you cannot find a utility to do that on manufacturer's site, then try this: http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ to wipe the drive. WARNING!! this will destroy all data on the selected hard drive!! be very careful when selecting a drive to wipe that you don't inadvertently select the wrong disk. After a low level format, unplug the drive, plug back in, windows should detect as a new, virgin, drive and it'll prompt you to format it. Format it and hopefully everything will be fine from here on out for you.
Post back, Hope this helps!!

a 1000Watt shouldn't have any problem coping with the components that you have, i would recommend that u borrow a power supply from a friend and try it out on your computer, maybe the power supply is old and is not supplying proper voltages on all the rails....
Sir, my 500 GB Portable Seagate Hard drive is not being detected anymore in My Computer but it shows up id Disk Management. When I start disk management, it tries to initialize my portable drive but reports an I/O error. Also it shows my hard drive as an unallocated and unknown device. Is there any way I can get my disk back to use without losing my datas in it?
Not very likely, at least not easily. Try it with another computer before you do anything further. Also try a different USB cable.
If those both fail, you might have some luck breaking open the case and getting at the drive itself and then placing that in an external dock..

My laptop's hard drive has been getting worse and worse in the past 2 months, eg. freezing for up to an hour at a time, heating up to painful temperatures until it overheats and crashes. But today she finally died and is completely unable to start.
A systems diagnostic gave error 2000-146, which apparently means hard drive failure. But everything's already backed up and safe, so I'm quite happy to just replace it.
But... I don't know how on earth I would go about doing that, or what I should be looking for when buying a new laptop hard drive, ie. what the difference is between a desktop HD and a laptop one.
So... Any advice?
Hey Partian Shot. A desktop drive is bigger and will generally have greater capacity. What is the make and model number of your laptop?. Do you have the Windows OS on a disk?
I have 500GB hard drive, down to 220 atm. Anyways, I notice sometimes it will read 190GB, but when I go to download something or whatever, or if a day or two pass, it goes back to 220GB. Do my computer needs to take hard drive space to do something? anyway to fix this?
I am picking up a second hard drive soon 1tb , but was curious about this issue .
I bought a hard disk around 3 months ago. While watching a video today, it stopped working. It is not neing shown in My Computer or in Disk Management. But it appears in Devices and Printers.
Please help as there was some important stuff in it.

What book is your suggestion about computer networks/networking? I'm going to read the best book of that topic. I want to read one that is theoretical and also practical to prepare me to be able to go on real world's computer networks/networking.
I know nothing about that, but if I did want to learn, I'd start right here in TS by asking questions.
Sure, you can read a book on it, but what happens if you have a question? Are you going to contact the author?
Just my opinion. Good luck.
Hi all I have a 750gb seagate external hard drive , and the usb port bit broke on it so ive taken the hard drive out the casing . just wanted to know is this a 3.5" .as I bought new one so thinking of selling this one on ebay or using it for my pc. any more info needed please reply thanks
Anyone please ?
I can't get my hard drive to start. I did a complete format and now it will not boot up when I put my Windows 8 cd in.. I'm sure it was a bad move on my part. I just wanted to clean it out and start over. Do I need to find drivers for my hard drive? Any help please , thank you
Did this pc in question come with Win8 and with this disk ?
If you are familiar with accessing the BIOS, does it show that the drive is present ?
If it does show and the drive is working properly, if the drive is set as the first boot device in the Boot section of the BIOS, or maybe be set as the first boot device using an F key sequence on startup, it should recognize the drive at power up where you can start the reinstall of Win8.

Hey Allen. I would call Western Digital support and see what they say.Since you have data on it you need, I wouldn't play around with it, get some answers from the drive makers, and as is always said, have important data backed up in at least 2 different places, with at least one being to CD/DVD.
I have a western digital 1 tb hard disk. which was working fine few hours ago.
but now when I am connecting it it is not showing in my computer.
I am using a windows 7 X64 machine.
I have tried every thing.
when I uninstall the driver from device manager and connect it again, windows tries to

Why is it 47C? What are the SMART errors causing it to say 'caution'?
Good evening fellas The Problem This is an issue I have never run into before on numerous builds My computer wont reset from pressing the reset button or through software reset I was able Computer wont reset (Hard or Software) to get through windows installation by pressing the power button and powering back up This is when I noticed a second issue My computer wont boot to windows with the USB mouse and key board plugged Computer wont reset (Hard or Software) in Front panel or back panel its just a black screen It will post with the USB mouse and keyboard plugged in as I am able to press F to get into bios I tried rearranging the front panel connectors on the mobo running with only the power button hooked up running with the front pannel usb hooked up and looking around bios for any relevant settings cant find anything there related to boot Once in windows I test my hardware by playing about hours straight of AC and doing burn in tests with no errors I am at a loss The Background I recently bought Computer wont reset (Hard or Software) a replacement mobo and power supply to replace a pair that fried due to moisture I bought a new case because I fell out of favor with my old case that had a window pane and led lights and I upgraded my ram to gb x gb modules Essentially I only kept my TB HD DVD-RW Video Card and CPU I tested all of the hard ware I kept in a friends system he let me use for the purpose and those components all burned in well after about hours of benching and burn in testing with no errors The Hardware Mobo Asrock N C-GS http www asrock com mb NVIDIA N C-GS FX CPU Phenom X BE GPU Pallet GT Sonic Edition http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E RAM GB PC http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E PSU Raidmax Hybrid W Modular http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E nbsp
A strange problem indeed.
Triple check your wiring is correct using your motherboard manual. Be sure the motherboard is mounted correctly on the standoffs and no grounds are occurring.
Faulty buttons on the case itself?
Reset bios to optimal defaults, clear cmos.
After that I would return the mobo.
Sorry I cant be more specific, Hope this helps.
So I'm really stupid - why? For trusting my ***** brother. I lend him my external hard drive (Western Digital 2 TB - see amazon link for model) and he did not "eject" the hard drive safely. Now it does not exist period. It doesn't show up under my computer and it also doesn't show up under computer management as a drive (so no letter duplication).
The hard drive external power source lights up (see link below)
Been almost 10 days... any ideas guys?
I need to get a new computer and thinking about putting one together myself. I'm studying computer animation and just killed my laptop trying to put a new fan in it. I'm a lifelong mac user, but I'm thinking I may be able to put together a better machine than, say an iMac, for the same price. How hard would this be with no experience or knowledge of hardware (see above story about laptop fan) and not a ton of time? Is it plug-and-play, or is thre soldering and stuff involved? Where would I start?
Everything is plug-and-play, no soldering required. Look at youtube videos. Square peg goes in square hole. It shouldn't take longer than a day to research and put it all together (if you ordered the right parts).
Yes, iMacs are overpriced in regards to their specs.
But, how did you break your laptop replacing a fan?
I think this one's dead, but I'll take an opinion.
Windows doesn't detect it, the driver for it is installed. Windows detected it, has an error and can't install it's driver... yet the driver is already there.
It makes a cicada sound and then stops... Not sure if it's trying to read or what. It's an old WD Passport. 320 gig
Clanking sounds means it's duff (bad) replace it or if you want to try to see if you can get it work and to pull off files. The old freezer in the ziplock bag with a folded paper towel should do the trick. 3 hrs in a freezer then thaw it (but even while thawing the device) it can still work. What do you have to loose?
This happen to mine and it still works today! Good luck!
A few months ago my external hard drive stopped working. At first the power light would come on but the hard drive wouldn't boot up. I think I may have plugged the wrong wattage from another cord mistakenly into it and from that point on, the power light stopped coming on. I decided to get a new printed circuit board from a reputable data recovery company in Canada. In addition to purchasing the PCB from them, they advise that the old/dead PCB be sent to them so they can swap the BIOS info from the old one onto the new one for better compatibility. The company claims they never received my old PCB (I tracked it and it shows delivered).
Is there any way I would still be able to recover my data from my external hard drive since I no longer have the old PCB?"

Hi, I just want to know what the best mode is, IDE or AHCI, my board has defaulted to IDE so that's what I'm currently using.
If it's an SSD then you should change it to AHCI and reinstall Windows. If all of your drives are normal HDDs then it won't make any difference.
Need some help on these matter which my external hard disk is not detectable on My Computer. When I plug in, the LED shows its on and can hear disk spinning but slow.
It is a Samsung HDD 160GB.I have tried the drive management but there is no detection of the hard disk. Can help me on this??
Go to device manager and take a screenshot of it please. We need to find the device and uninstall the driver, but we will proceed with that shortly.
Good afternoon I am sure this has been mentioned on here many times but every time I search for my problem I always get the same results Third party this format this backup your data that Here is what is going on I have a TB external hard drive that is more than full backing up my data via third party software is not an option because to hard external Digital Western drive 2TB Raw NTFS I don t have room to store the data anywhere The copious amount of data on the drive is also why I can not just simply format the drive to change the file system I have also tried a couple of methods involving check disk commands and using disk management neither of these methods have worked out in my favor This problem has really shaken my confidence with computers and troubleshooting up until this point I thought I was pretty well educated on fixing stuff like this but I really can not figure this one out 2TB Western Digital external hard drive Raw to NTFS So here s the summary large hard drive no formatting no backing up the data RAW to NTFS Thank you nbsp
I'm still confused. What is it you want to do?
Try Recuva, if you think your files have been deleted!
So I have a inch mac mid Its a Mac OS X Lion So I bought this hard disk Samsung gb ST a year or two ago and then did the correct formatting so it could run on the mac This summer I took it off my mac for about a month and now I felt like listening to Wilko s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and realized it was on the hard disk so I put it back on and now its not showing up It was fine before I tried going in disk utilities and it shows up there so I verified it and although it didn t notify me for any repairments I still clicked on working on stopped Hard disk mac My repair and it didn t help Theres a lot more info there then just that album a whole lot of great movies tv shows and a big library of great music that I was looking forward to get back into as well as a couple programs also plug ins for my My Hard disk stopped working on mac ableton so now I cant open up my projects either So I really don t wanna format it Any help will be greatly appreciated theres a lot of info on this hard disk nbsp
In Disk Utility, does the disk show a partition? If so, highlight that partition, and then in the bottom left of that window there will be a blue clickable 'link'. Click that.
Hi I am wondering if anyone has Drill After using Error Hard Drive Disk had the same happening to them or even better if anyone knows how to save my hard drive The external HDD is an month old Western Digital hard drive TB was working perfectly fine before this incident I had some jpg files that I accidentally deleted from my ext HDD so I used disk drill in order to try to recover the files disk drill estimated the process to app hours and during this time I could hear the hard drive making some noises usually it is very quiet When the process was done I saved the recovered images to my mac hard drive and saved the session All seemed fine so I dismounted the WD HDD the image disappeared but when I unplugged the Hard Drive Error After using Disk Drill USB an error message showed up saying I hadn t disconnected it properly Now when I try to connect the WD HDD it makes heaps of noises and clicking sounds and it doesn t show up as a device on mac I tried to open the saved session when WD HDD was connected but a message that I needed to connect the device showed up in disk drill I restarted mac plugged in the HDD and opened disk drill once again and now I Hard Drive Error After using Disk Drill get this message quot Dead disk detected The disk quot WD My Passport Media quot seems to be non-responsive dead Unfortunately you won t be able to recover any data from it without hardware intrusion As a quick recommendation please try to reconnect it to your Mac quot I am devastated everything was working Hard Drive Error After using Disk Drill fine previously I just wanted to recover jpg images and instead I lost everything on my HDD that contained a lot of really important data Please please help me solve this nbsp
I only use WD drives here. WD Passports sometimes they don't work. What I do is this.
Place one in a ziplock bag and stick it into the freezer for 3 hrs or longer.
Thaw-it or use-it while it comes to life while you connect to a USB source like a PC
Most of the time the Passport will continue to work again. It all depends on the condition of it.
Clicking or clunking means the HDD is going bad.
In the pass others would say to use a screw driver handle and hit the drive.
But I always use the freezing method and it works enough to recover the data.
If the HDD is too far gone then nope not going to work.
So I use a hard drive tray which usually works fine drive/OS with files 'interact' BIOS hard but every couple of months I ll get no boot no Bios just a black screen and various led s You can see a previous post at http www techspot com community topics stumper-no-bios-or-video but Saturday I had my mouse BIOS 'interact' with hard drive/OS files freeze and couldn t get any control Re-boot attempt gave a DMI pool data error Surfing yields a dozen possible reasons for that error Ended up re-setting the Bios solved I use b XP and rarely Linux Mint all on different drives The guy who helped me says Bios interacts with data in the MBR on the different drives I BIOS 'interact' with hard drive/OS files have never read anything stating Bios can get mixed up due to which hard drive or OS as Bios passes control off to MBR and then OS regardless of which sata cable being used I agree the drive tray must be confusing the Bios but don t understand how Recently I haven t even had Mint installed so I don t think the grub is a culprit Anyone know how using a tray and different drives could change settings in Bios Goes against what I learned nbsp
The Boot sequence of a PC has this (legacy) sequence of events
Power On Self Test (POST) occurs
The video card is found
Secondary rom' are found and executed (eg IDE/ATA,...)
Bios vga display
System inventory of the devices occurs
PnP devices are found
Using the Boot sequence map in the BIOS, a device that is ready and bootable is found
the MBR is read if found
and the BOOT.ini processed to locate the kernel
So the list of ready devices are sampled to find a MBR.
For UEFI support, the BIOS looks for the /boot partition.
This could sound confusing but please bare with me So I had a TB HD Sata with win I took it out and used a new SSD which I put Win on Then I hooked up a TB HD Sata as Storage Simple so far right Well now I want to get my documents Bookmarks etc off the quot OLD quot drive I figured simple like with IDE HD s but no When I hook it up as the only drive I get this message EFI Shell Version Current get do How main off Hard Data My Drive? I "former" running mode Map Cannot find required map name Press Esc in seconds to skip startup nsh any other key to continue shell id gt When I hook it up as the second How do I get Data off My "former" main Hard Drive? drive After the SSD the drive doesn t show up I tried to put it in another PC by itself but it said something like it wasn t the disk for that PC Someone please tell me there is an easy way around this I googled a bunch of stuff and tried a few things with no luck I m hoping I m just frustrated and missing the obvious Thanks for any help nbsp

Hi. I use a 1tb external hard drive to store music, photos and movies. I use it on my Imac, also on my Asus e-book. I see that the external hard drive is partitioned into two. How or why I don't know. What I do know is that the first part is now full, and I cant see the second part when plugged into the USB on either computer. Could anyone help me by suggesting how I can access the second 500gig? Id appreciate answers in plain English, I really dont understand more than the basics, and the clearer ans simpler the answers the more I will learn, and thanks to all those about to read this !
Back-up all your data on the first partition.
Right click on "My computer" and click "manage".This should take you to the computer management screen.
Look at the left, you should see an option that says "Disk Management"; Click on it.
You should be able to see all the disc partitions, find your External HDD partitions.
Right-Click on the 2nd partition and delete it.
After that right click on your first partition and select the option to "Extend Partition"
If you are confused, or need confirmation for anything please don't hesitate to ask.
Issue I currently have hard drives installed on my desktop I m Hard Issue(s) Drive using them as separate Hard Drive Issue(s) drives One is a gig which has windows vista came with the computer for every day use and the other is terabyte with windows which is for music recording purposes only Whenever I boot my computer it gets to a blue HP screen that has several F key options F F F and then there is an ESC option for boot menu to select between the hard drives The gig always boots up regardless of which one I choose All the cables are hooked up properly I don t understand Could somebody please help Oops I forgot issue My gig hd freezes up It was doing this before I got the terabyte hd which is why I bought it in the first place Everything loads up and works fine for about a minute or and then everything freezes Even after letting it set for awhile nothing works Not even Ctrl Alt Delete works Nothing I did a factory restore on it after I got all the files moved from the to the tera Any ideas on this one as well nbsp
What are the make/models of the Hard drives? Have you tried going into your bios and set the 2 Terabyte hard drive as primary? In my opinion, I would eliminate Windows Vista (no point in running Dual Boot Windows Vista AND Windows 7). If you've already saved what you want from the 750 GB hard drive, then I would just format it and use it as extra storage until it no longer works, or just eliminate it totally from the system. You can setup profiles if you are worried about keeping information separate or you can give another operating system (Linux) a try.
Hello Everyone I have Hard Drive Failing a HP m desktop running Windows Vista Failing Hard Drive that we use for our small companies files Upon booting up displays a message that hard drive failure is imminent and I need to back it up and replace its asap After this message Windows tries to load and fails The system then goes into Windows system restore and recovery mode and is unable to solve the problem I turned the computer off and uninstalled the hard drive and realized that someone has messed with the hard drive before and messed up the SATA connections on the back and the plastic guiding tab was broken off One of the SATA pins was bent and I did my best to delicately straighten it I was able to find the plastic tab in the SATA cable and was able to reseat the cable I then installed the failing hard drive onto another desktop as the slave drive The backup desktop is running Windows XP and I was going to try and back up the failing hard drive onto a portable one After getting everything installed my computer executed chkdsk upon start up and has been running for the past hour My questions are as follows Roughly how long does chkdsk take and will chkdsk run on both the connected drives What problems will I most likely incur after chkdsk has finished Will I be able to back up the failed hard drive with it configured as a slave drive What other option do I have available to recover files and back up the failing hard drive nbsp
Hard drive is failing, you're running chkdsk, and have no backup of it yet? Dude, you're brave.
'Clone' the failing HDD, ASAP.
I have two 1.5TB WD ?My Book Essential? hard drives. My computer seems to think they are the same drive and won?t read them at the same time. I get no errors when they are both plugged in, the second one just won?t read.
They are both present in device manager but not in Disk Management...
I have tried assigning unique (unused) drive letters, but the computer still thinks it is the same drive (I.e. I plug one in, assign it ?X? and then unplug it. I plug the second one in, it shows up as ?X? so I assign it ?Q.? I unplug it, plug the first one in again and it shows up as ?Q?.)
Does any of that make sense? Am I going insane? Am I missing something really simple?
Can anyone help?
my book essential hard drive not workingothers seem to have issues too
